It’s a dog’s life in every good way Clarkson Veterinary Hospital is a key player in successful adoptions by Hamlin Dog Shelter by Doug Hickerson

“It’s a dog’s life” sheds its negative meaning if that dog has been rescued by Hamlin’s Craig A. Goodrich Dog Shelter and treated by the Clarkson Veterinary Hospital. Indeed, the shelter is a “nokill” shelter, insuring any rescued dog will live. And, the pet will very likely live well, as the shelter partners with the vet hospital and responsible new pet owners. Since the shelter opened at 80 Railroad Avenue in December 2012, over 300 dogs have experienced the transition from abandonment to loving homes. Dave Maynard is Hamlin’s dog control officer. As a volunteer, he developed and manages the shelter. The efficiency and care by Maynard and his volunteers were especially demonstrated in October 2014, when the shelter took in a pregnant Labrador mix “Dena” who nearly had been euthanized in Ohio. She had 13 puppies in the kennel, cared for by a well-trained team of volunteers who worked with them in quarantine. When they were ready, it took just two days for all the puppies to be adopted out through contacts on the shelter’s Facebook that has 7,128 followers. An integral part of the rescue operation is veterinarian Dr. William J. “Jess” Buttery who heads the Clarkson Veterinary Hospital. When the shelter was starting up, Maynard said Buttery was helpful with advice on the symptoms

in a rescue dog that might signal a need for medical attention. Also from the beginning, Buttery and his partner veterinarian, Dr. Sabrina Miller, have given a checkup and rabies shot to each dog taken in by the shelter at a major discount to the Town of Hamlin. Last year, it was 145 dogs, and this year, so far, nearly 100, according to Maynard. For any dog adopted from the shelter, Buttery provides new owners a free office visit for a complete physical exam and advice on health care. For puppies, in conjunction with Purina, a free bag of food is provided, plus a $5 coupon to purchase one, and a coupon for $25 off the next visit at any vet participating with Purina. For puppies under six months old, Buttery gives a free heartworm preventative and free flea control. For further vet services like neutering, fecal exam, or deworming, the owner may choose Buttery or any other veterinarian. “We want to get them started on the right path,” Buttery said, “whether or not they come back to us in the future. With this free visit, at least we know they heard about these important points for raising a healthy dog.” The volume of dogs rescued and adopted out is managed by Maynard’s caring and efficient methods. The process is greatly facilitated by the Clarkson Veterinary Hospital giving “same day” service for the first check up and rabies shot. “Dr. Buttery is just incredible,”

Ready for a good home - Dr. William J. Buttery has just given this puppy her first check up and rabies shot so she will be ready to be adopted. Caroline Thompson, Dave Maynard’s assistant at Hamlin’s Craig A. Goodrich Dog Shelter, is holding her. Photo by Dianne Hickerson. Maynard said. “Any time of day I can call and get a dog in that day. For example, recently I had adoptions on a Friday night. I had three dogs that needed shots; he took all three dogs on an hour’s notice.” The admiration is mutual, as Buttery observes that Maynard “is diligent, putting in a lot of time and effort into finding the right homes for the pets.” Many volunteers are needed to run the shelter 24/7. Right now, Maynard says he is in need of more

volunteers; the shelter’s Facebook page makes a convincing appeal. It also provides a stunning array of photos of dogs available for adoption and new dog owners telling their stories of happy endings. Go to: www.facebook.com/HamlinNY-DogControl.HamlinDogShelter. It was generous of Westside News Inc.’s owner and publisher Keith Ryan to offer me the title of editor emeritus and to add it to the masthead of the newspapers. I pondered the idea when he suggested it because my first thought about it was, “what do I have to do?” But I did some research and found out the answer to that question is, “not much.” I know it took a good amount of time for him to compile that list of articles I had written way back when and I appreciate very much his comments about three decades of community reflection via the newspaper pages (printed in SN & HCH July 5, 2015). It was, and still is, all about people – the ones you get to meet, the ones you get to work with.

Editorial Department email: editor@westsidenewsny.com

Many, many heartfelt thanks to so many people who have sent me emails, notes, reminiscences and cards of congratulations. A few people have sent me some tips about easing into my post-career efforts (stay up late, sleep in, don’t rush to return emails, binge watch PBS shows, garden more, read more, volunteer). Nearly 10 days into my “commencement” I can honestly say I have not one clue about what my “next” thing will be. That’s why it will be good for me to continue to be involved with Westside News on a very limited basis for a few months. I will continue to work with freelancers as a coordinator of their material for the newspapers. It’s a nice way to still be involved. I think I can handle it. It will continue to be an honor and a privilege. Evelyn Dow, Editor Emeritus Suburban News and Hamlin-Clarkson Herald evelyndow5@gmail.com

Need A New Tube?

You can pick one up at our office, 1776 Hilton-Parma Corners Road, Route 259, just north of Route 104 (Ridge Road). Look for the log cabin. Our hours are Monday-Thursday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Suggestion: If you are in a windy area, it would help if you put a piece of duct tape on the back of the tube to prevent the paper from blowing out.

Need Help? Consult The Hometown Community Directory for business and consumer information.

Firefighter receives recognition

Prepared by Westside News Inc. 585-352-3411

At the first annual Hamlin Morton Walker Fire District Banquet held at the Clarendon Recreation Hall, Robert Klafehn was recognized and honored for his 50 years of active volunteer fire service to the Walker Fire Department. Klafehn held several jobs over the years: secretary for 21 years, board member, fire police officer. Klafehn recalls the old days when he went on a call and rode on the back of the truck. Robert said when he joined, the Department had a chalk board in front of the fire hall. He was the first one there, and with no home pagers, only the fire whistle, he would write on the board where the fire was and what truck should go. Then he would go on the last truck out. At the banquet Robert Klafehn received a standing ovation and received a ring from the Walker Fire Department for 50 years of volunteer active service.

Ogden/Spencerport photos sought for new history book for Bicentennial You can be a part of the 2017 Ogden Bicentennial/Spencerport Sesquicentennial Celebration. Donate or loan your original photographs to be considered for use in the new book being compiled by your historians and a group of interested citizens. The publisher, Arcadia, prefers originals, but will consider digitally scanned photos or digital photos. All you need do is bring your photo(s) to the reception desk at Ogden Town Offices between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday before September 30. If you submit a digital photo, email it to receptionist@ogdenny.com. You will be given a physical receipt for the photo(s), or an email receipt if digital, that will designate whether or not you want to have them returned to you. It will also be a release by you to allow the photo to be used for the book and to be retained by the Ogden Historian for the town archives. Your photos

will be kept in archival quality envelopes, labeled and a copy of the receipt will be kept with them. We are also interested in having about 10 dedicated helpers to aid in developing the theme of the book (history shaping the future) and selecting the photos to carry it through. Since we have one Arcadia history book for Ogden/Spencerport, we hope to concentrate on our more modern history, from about WWII through the present day and any documented plans for the future that have been formulated by past experiences. A publication date of Fall 2016 is desirable in order to make the books available for the holiday season and to be in folks’ hands as the Bicentennial/Sesquicentennial celebration begins January 2017. For information call Sandy Mitchell, Village of Spencerport Historian at 352-6883 or Carol Coburn, Town of Ogden Historian at 733-4943.

Children’s games, a cake walk, food and refreshment, and tours of the historic home were all part of the day’s festivities sponsored by the Western Monroe Historical Society. Second Open House held regarding Brockport’s Active Transportation Plan Village plans future walking and bicycling infrastructure by Kristina Gabalski Brockport residents had the opportunity to see a detailed display of preliminary recommendations for the village’s Active Transportation Plan, currently being developed, during an open house at the Village Hall held Tuesday evening, June 30. Work on the Plan began last fall with an inventory of existing and planned conditions followed by needs assessment and now general study and plan content. A final report is expected to be ready this September. The June 30 open house was the second opportunity for the public to have input in the process. The first open house was held April 9. “Residents have done a great job of giving us inside information,” said project director Tom Robinson, RLA, of Barton and Loguidice (B&L). “People are getting a second round of input. We want to make sure we’re not missing anything,” he said. The Active Transportation plan will help the village plan future walking and bicycling infrastructure and support the continued development of safe, functional and attractive facilities for walking and bicycling in the Greater Brockport Community. The Federal Highway Administration through the Unified Planning Work Program of the Genesee Transportation Council (GTC) provides funding for the project. Rob-

Rochester area students honored at Skills USA Championships Students from technical education programs in Rochesterarea high schools and colleges won the nation’s highest awards at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference. Industry leaders representing more than 600 businesses, corporations, trade associations and unions recognized the students for demonstrating excellence in 100 hands-on occupational and leadership competitions, such as robotics, criminal justice, aviation maintenance and public speaking. All competitions are designed, run and judged by industry using industry standards. Skill Point Certificates were awarded in 86 occupational and leadership areas to students who achieved a high score defined by industry. Area students who are Skill Point Certificate recipients include: •Anthony Cangialosi, from Rochester and a student at Alfred State College-School of Applied Technology (Wellsville), was awarded a Skill Point Certificate in Electrical Construction Wiring. •Tyler Motzer, from Rochester and a student at WEMOCO Career and Education Center (Spencerport), was awarded a Skill Point Certificate in Welding Sculpture. •Team K (consisting of Zachary Behrens, Jessika Rodriguez, Kali Haskins), from WEMOCO Career and Education Center (Spencerport), was awarded a Skill Point Certificate in Chapter Display. Provided information

ert Torzynski of GTC, has facilitated the $50,000 grant. He attended the June open house. Preliminary recommendations for improving safety, mobility and connectivity for pedestrians and bicyclists include: Erie Canalway bridge improvements; priority intersection improvements (Route 19 and Route 104; Erie Canalway Trail and Main Street Bridge; Main Street/ Adams Street/Fair Street/Park Ave; Redman Road and New Campus Drive and Route 19 and Route 31); on-street bicycle facilities; priority sidewalk additions; Redman Road Road Diet (removal of some travel lanes for other uses and travel modes); Owens Road improvements; trail improvements (possible rails to trails loop with Canalway Trail and abandoned CSX line); school connectivity; and programs, policies, education and outreach. “We are delighted with the progress to date thanks to the leadership of Tom Robinson at B&L,” said Ray Duncan, steering committee member. “The public has been very receptive of what we are doing. Turnout has been good.” He noted the project has brought together village government, The College at Brockport, and the non-profit Walk! Bike! Brockport! group, of which he is chairman. “It’s amazing what a few people can get done in a small village if you pull together,” Duncan said. He noted the project has also inspired spin-off projects. The College at Brockport has purchased 40 new bicycles to improve its bike share program and is applying to become a bicycle friendly university. Additionally, a possible project with local mural artist Stacey Kirby would transform the old railroad bridge over Main Street into a “gateway” to the village. When the final report is finished in September, the village will have, “A set of recommendations and priorities for implementation of the plan including a list of feasible projects which are fundable and achievable,” Tom Robinson said. He added that the plan would also give the village a competitive edge in grant applications.

UPBEAT FUNERALS As increasing numbers of individuals make their preferences known that their funerals should include music, festive dinners, and other upbeat activities, it may be time to take another look at New Orleans jazz funerals. These curious mixes of solemnity and exuberance traditionally begin at the church or funeral home. After the service, the procession of mourners proceeds slowly through the neighborhood in a generally somber mood. At the cemetery, after the interment ceremony, the band leads the procession from the gravesite without playing. After reaching a respectful distance from the site, the lead trumpeter

sounds two preparatory notes to alert fellow musicians that drummers will begin to play the “second line beat.” Lively improvisational jazz then begins the celebration. A funeral is a time when respect, concern, and appreciation for a life that has been lived can be expressed in a sincere manner. A funeral can and should be as unique as the life that is being celebrated. For more information about the funeral services THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME offers, please call at 585-392-7100. Available seven days a week, 24 hours a day, we are located at 735 East Avenue. Family owned and trusted since 1976.
