It’s a dog’s life in every good way Clarkson Veterinary Hospital is a key player in successful adoptions by Hamlin Dog Shelter by Doug Hickerson

“It’s a dog’s life” sheds its negative meaning if that dog has been rescued by Hamlin’s Craig A. Goodrich Dog Shelter and treated by the Clarkson Veterinary Hospital. Indeed, the shelter is a “nokill” shelter, insuring any rescued dog will live. And, the pet will very likely live well, as the shelter partners with the vet hospital and responsible new pet owners. Since the shelter opened at 80 Railroad Avenue in December 2012, over 300 dogs have experienced the transition from abandonment to loving homes. Dave Maynard is Hamlin’s dog control officer. As a volunteer, he developed and manages the shelter. The efficiency and care by Maynard and his volunteers were especially demonstrated in October 2014, when the shelter took in a pregnant Labrador mix “Dena” who nearly had been euthanized in Ohio. She had 13 puppies in the kennel, cared for by a well-trained team of volunteers who worked with them in quarantine. When they were ready, it took just two days for all the puppies to be adopted out through contacts on the shelter’s Facebook that has 7,128 followers. An integral part of the rescue operation is veterinarian Dr. William J. “Jess” Buttery who heads the Clarkson Veterinary Hospital. When the shelter was starting up, Maynard said Buttery was helpful with advice on the symptoms

Also from the beginning, Buttery and his partner veterinarian, Dr. Sabrina Miller, have given a checkup and rabies shot to each dog taken in by the shelter at a major discount to the Town of Hamlin. Last year, it was 145 dogs, and this year, so far, nearly 100, according to Maynard. For any dog adopted from the shelter, Buttery provides new owners a free office visit for a complete physical exam and advice on health care. For puppies, in conjunction with Purina, a free bag of food is provided, plus a $5 coupon to purchase one, and a coupon for $25 off the next visit at any vet participating with Purina. For puppies under six months old, Buttery gives a free heartworm preventative and free flea control. For further vet services like neutering, fecal exam, or deworming, the owner may choose Buttery or any other veterinarian. “We want to get them started on the right path,” Buttery said, “whether or not they come back to us in the future. With this free visit, at least we know they heard about these important points for raising a healthy dog.” The volume of dogs rescued and adopted out is managed by Maynard’s caring and efficient methods. The process is greatly facilitated by the Clarkson Veterinary Hospital giving “same day” service for the first check up and rabies shot. “Dr. Buttery is just incredible,”

For example, recently I had adoptions on a Friday night. I had three dogs that needed shots; he took all three dogs on an hour’s notice.” The admiration is mutual, as Buttery observes that Maynard “is diligent, putting in a lot of time and effort into finding the right homes for the pets.” Many volunteers are needed to run the shelter 24/7. Right now, Maynard says he is in need of more

volunteers; the shelter’s Facebook page makes a convincing appeal. Resolution 7/2015 Introduced by: Mayor Penders Seconded by: Trustee Hopson Whereas, the Village of Spencerport previously established a capital reserve fund known as “Streets and Pavements Capital Reserve Fund” on April 7, 2004 pursuant to the provisions of Section 6-c of the General Municipal Law for the purpose of financing the cost of reconstruction or betterment of any Village owned assets and also to finance the cost of construction or acquisition of any buildings, equipment or other items deemed necessary by the Village Board and Whereas, the Village Board of Trustees of the Village of Spencerport deems it necessary to expend an amount not to exceed $120,000 for the purpose of Brockport Road Rebuild Phase I. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: That the Village Treasurer be and is hereby directed to remove from the Streets and Pavements Capital Reserve Fund an amount not to exceed $120,000 for payments of costs of such Brockport Road Rebuild Phase I. It was generous of Westside News Inc.’s owner and publisher Keith Ryan to offer me the title of editor emeritus and to add it to the masthead of the newspapers. I pondered the idea when he suggested it because my first thought about it was, “what do I have to do?” But I did some research and found out the answer to that question is, “not much.” I know it took a good amount of time for him to compile that list of articles I had written way back when and I appreciate very much his comments about three decades of community reflection via the newspaper pages (printed in SN & HCH July 5, 2015). It was, and still is, all about people – the ones you get to meet, the ones you get to work with.

Many, many heartfelt thanks to so many people who have sent me emails, notes, reminiscences and cards of congratulations. Nearly 10 days into my “commencement” I can honestly say I have not one clue about what my “next” thing will be. That’s why it will be good for me to continue to be involved with Westside News on a very limited basis for a few months. Bright Raven Gymnasts earn Gold, Silver and Bronze Bright Raven gymnasts competed in the USA Gymnastics Level 3 Upstate New York Championships in East Rochester June 6 and earned gold, silver and bronze medals in many divisions. 12-year-old McKenna Kiesel of Chili earned five gold medals in the Senior C Division. Kiesel took first all around (39.00) and first in every event: vault (9.70), uneven bars (9.775), balance beam (9.65) and floor exercise (9.875). Ogden/Spencerport photos sought for new history book for Bicentennial You can be a part of the 2017 Ogden Bicentennial/Spencerport Sesquicentennial Celebration. Donate or loan your original photographs to be considered for use in the new book being compiled by your historians and a group of interested citizens. The publisher, Arcadia, prefers originals, but will consider digitally scanned photos or digital photos. All you need do is bring your photo(s) to the reception desk at Ogden Town Offices between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday before September 30. If you submit a digital photo, email it to receptionist@ogdenny.com. You will be given a physical receipt for the photo(s), or an email receipt if digital, that will designate whether or not you want to have them returned to you. It will also be a release by you to allow the photo to be used for the book and to be retained by the Ogden Historian for the town archives. Your photos

will be kept in archival quality envelopes, labeled and a copy of the receipt will be kept with them. We are also interested in having about 10 dedicated helpers to aid in developing the theme of the book (history shaping the future) and selecting the photos to carry it through. Since we have one Arcadia history book for Ogden/Spencerport, we hope to concentrate on our more modern history, from about WWII through the present day and any documented plans for the future that have been formulated by past experiences. A publication date of Fall 2016 is desirable in order to make the books available for the holiday season and to be in folks’ hands as the Bicentennial/Sesquicentennial celebration begins January 2017. A patriotic participant in the Children’s Parade lines up in front of the Brockport’s MorganManning House. The parade was part of the “Old Fashion Fourth of July” celebration in its 34th year on the mansion’s lawn. A record crowd of several hundred also enjoyed the Brockport High School Choir (joined by many community members), the Brockport Community Concert Band, and the Brockport Big Band. Children’s games, a cake walk, food and refreshment, and tours of the historic home were all part of the day’s festivities sponsored by the Western Monroe Historical Society. Steven Brown earned his master’s degree in chemical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on June 5. He is remaining at MIT to pursue his PhD in Chemical Engineering. Steven is a 2009 graduate of the Churchville-Chili High School and a 2013 graduate of The University at Buffalo. He is the son of Michael and Donna Brown of Churchville.

Rebecca Adams of Hilton has been named to the Mansfield University president’s list for the spring 2015 semester. To be named to the president’s list, a student must attend the university full-time and attain a 4.0 GPA for the semester. Morrisville State College announced the students who were named to the dean’s list for the spring 2015 semester. To be named to the dean’s list a student much achieve an average of 3.0 to 3.99 for the semester and complete 12 credit hours. Erica Keeler, 2013 Spencerport graduate, was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences University. Erica is a pharmacy major. To be eligible for the dean’s list at MCPHS, a student must obtain at least a 3.5 grade-point average.

The State University of New York at Potsdam recently named 367 students who excelled academically in the spring 2015 semester to the college’s dean’s list. The students included: •Evelyn Bennett of Rochester, whose major is psychology. •Heather Lowry of Rochester, whose major is biology. To achieve the honor of being on the dean’s list, each student must have satisfactorily completed 12 numerically-graded semester hours, with a grade point average of between 3.25 and 3.49 in the given semester.

Andrew Heath from Holley was named to the Miami University spring 2015 dean’s list. Students who ranked in the top 20 percent of undergraduate students within each division for second semester 2014-2015 have been named to the dean’s list recognizing academic performance. Heath majors in interactive media studies.

Jeffrey Spring, a junior from Hamlin, was named to the dean’s list at Bentley University. To be named to the dean’s list, a full-time student must have a grade point average of 3.3 or higher with no course grade below 2.0 during the term.

Kyle Zaffuto of Brockport, son of Steve and Tammy Zaffuto, has been named to the spring 2015 dean’s list at St. John Fisher College. Zaffuto, a junior, is a business major concentrating in finance and marketing. To be eligible for the dean’s list at St. John Fisher College, a student must have attained at least a 3.5 GPA for the semester.

Kristen Poteat, a 2014 graduate of Churchville-Chili High School, is majoring in biology at St. John Fisher College. Poteat was named to the spring 2015 dean’s list with a GPA of 3.75 at St. John Fisher College. To be eligible for the dean’s list, a student must have attained at least a 3.5 GPA for the semester. Poteat was also inducted into the Beta Beta Beta honor society.

Kimberly Cenzi of Spencerport has been named to the dean’s list for the spring 2015 semester at Monroe Community College. Cenzi majors in liberal arts.

Mark Metzler of Rochester has been named to the spring 2015 dean’s list at Loyola University Maryland. To qualify for dean’s list, a student must achieve a minimum GPA of 3.5 and successfully completed courses totaling a minimum of 15 credits.

Matthew Tyler Bartock, D.O., son of David and Brenda Bartock of Spencerport, earned his medical degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) in Erie, Pennsylvania in May 2015. He is a graduate of Spencerport High School and Niagara University. He will begin an Internal Medicine residency at the Allegheny General Health System in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in July. SUNY Oswego recently recognized those who completed baccalaureate studies in spring 2015. Whereas, the Village of Spencerport previously established a capital reserve fund known as “General Fund Capital Reserve” on April 4, 1984 pursuant to the provisions of Section 6-c of the General Municipal Law for the purpose of financing the cost of reconstruction or betterment of any Village owned assets and also to finance the cost of construction or acquisition of any buildings, equipment or other items deemed necessary by the Village Board and Whereas, the Village Board of Trustees of the Village of Spencerport deems it necessary to expend an amount not to exceed $58,000 for the purpose of Trolley Depot Decking. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:

Section 3. That this Local Law shall take effect upon filing with the Secretary of State. Section 4. That this resolution shall take effect immediately.

This resolution is adopted subject to permissive referendum.
