Two area landmarks listed on Five to Revive 2014 by Kristina Gabalski The Erie Canal warehouse at 60 Clinton Street in Brockport and the Hillside Cemetery and Chapel in Clarendon, Orleans County, are both part of The Landmark Society of Western New York’s 2014 Five to Revive.

The list of historic sites was announced Tuesday, October 7 and also includes the Auditorium Theater in Rochester, designated buildings of historic value in Rochester, and the former Trinity Episcopal Church in Seneca Falls. “This is the second year we are announcing a Five to Revive list to call attention to

key properties in Western New York that are in need of investment,” Landmark Society Executive Director Wayne Goodman said. “We can’t stress enough that these are significant historic properties whose rehabilitations can become catalytic projects for the neighborhoods and communities that surround them.” Five to Revive Chair Tom Castelein, vice-president of preservation on The Landmark Society Board, said the initiative enhances the organization’s ongoing efforts to support revitalization in Western New York. “Our inaugural 2013 list of properties are moving closer to the goal of contributing to economic revitalization in their communities,” he said. The 60 Clinton Street Erie Canal Warehouse in Brockport is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the only surviving building related to the local reaper manufacturing industry, whose products were sold to an international clientele. “A highly visible anchor on the Erie Canal in the Village of Brockport, this historic industrial building is unique in Monroe County,” the Landmark Society says of why it was selected. “It’s exceptional historic and architectural significance make it an important candidate for revitalization after many years of vacancy.” “The Erie Canal Warehouse in Brockport has the potential to be a real catalyst for investment and revitalization in its immediate area,” said Caitlin Meives, a preservation planner with The Landmark Society. “With its location alongside the Canal, a rehabbed building would be a wonderful asset for visitors and residents alike. It’s also worth noting that, as a former industrial canalside building, it’s an extremely unique resource. A lot of these structures are no longer standing.” Brockport Mayor Margaret Blackman agrees. She told the Suburban News/ The Herald, “60 Clinton Street is an historical canal front property whose development has the potential to revitalize the entire street.” The Hillside Cemetery and Chapel at

the intersection of Route 237 and South Holley Road in Clarendon dates to 1866 and is a significant example of two periods of cemetery design. The 1894 Gothic Revival Chapel is a primary feature of the cemetery but is suffering from deferred maintenance and lack of funds. “The Hillside Cemetery and Chapel are important examples of historic landscape architecture and building architecture in Orleans County,” the Landmark Society said. “They are highly visible resources at the southern gateway into the Village of Holley. With such historic and architectural significance, the Hillside Cemetery and Chapel could, with proper funding and maintenance, serve as attractive assets in the Clarendon and Holley communities.” Caitlin Meives said Hillside Cemetery and Chapel “have had a dedicated group of local preservationists in the Town of Clarendon advocating on their behalf for a few years now and we hope to partner with them and the town to explore funding opportunities and plan for long-term stewardship of the designed landscape and the chapel.” Clarendon Historical Society member Erin Anheier said she and the Society are pleased The Landmark Society selected Hillside Cemetery and Chapel as part of the 2014 Five to Revive and explains that it will help in raising awareness of the need to restore the chapel before further deterioration occurs. “It is a beautiful and unique building that is very important to the streetscape of South Main Street, Holley,” Anheier said. “We really want to once again make it suitable for public use. The Town of Clarendon is proud to have such an historic treasure as Hillside Cemetery and its chapel within our borders. The Five to Revive designation should emphasize the importance of the building to the local population and hopefully encourage their support for the project. The Clarendon Historical Society and the Holley-Murray Historical Society are working together to raise funds for the restoration.

IN B U S I N E S S ! In a new series of articles which begin in this issue, Westside News Inc. will ask owners of small businesses in the readership about their experiences, how they have adapted their business plan to meet the needs of the marketplace and economy and what they have learned in the process. We’re starting it off with an interview with Mike and Beth Caputo of Butterfly Kisses Sweet Shoppe in Spencerport, first time business owners who opened their candy shop a little more than a year ago. In coming installments, we’ll interview new and veteran business owners from around the Westside News Inc. delivery area. Look for “In Business” this week and in weeks to come. Evelyn Dow Editor, Westside News Inc.

First year in business has huge learning curve by Kristina Gabalski Butterfly Kisses Sweet Shoppe, located at 12 Amity Street in the Village of Spencerport (across from the Post Office), may be one of the sweetest spots along the Erie Canal. The family run candy store features a wide selection - from the glass case full of 60 varieties of high quality chocolate, to retro-nostalgic favorites to candy from around the world and bulk candy. Husband and wife team Michael and Bethany Caputo opened the shop in September 2013. The two also moved their family to the village and they say they love living and running a business in Spencerport. Q: What have you learned during your first year in business? “It’s been a huge learning curve,” Bethany says. She and Michael have frequently made adjustments to their hours of business, in particular, they say. When they first opened, Michael says they thought hours that extended into the early evening would work well - giving restaurant patrons a chance to stop-in before heading home - but the evening traffic never materialized, so hours were shortened. “We decided to follow other merchants’ hours,” the couple says. They have also worked to try to find the “right mix” of candy for the shop and are always working to fine-tune offerings. “We’re trying to find a niche,” Bethany says. The two say advice of other business owners has been invaluable including the fact that the tastes of many local residents tend to be, “meat and potatoes,” nothing too fancy, just simple, familiar flavors. Q: So what has worked? “This business is seasonal,” the couple says. “If the weather is nice or its the holidays, we get foot traffic.” Christmas was busy as was Valentine’s and Easter. Bethany and Mike say gift baskets have been popular and they are offering a greater selection for customers. “We are always asking ourselves, ‘Would it appeal to us?’ ” Bethany says about new offerings. She adds that she can easily go beyond her own tastes, however, and see that various products would appeal to others. “It’s the trial and error method,” she says with a smile. Butterfly Kisses also offers high quality candy and chocolate at very competitive prices. People are always surprised by the reasonable prices, Michael notes.

Fire prevention reminder:

Michael and Bethany Caputo opened a shop in September 2013. About their first year in business, Bethany says: “It’s been a huge learning curve.” The best part of being a shopkeeper, she says, “is that we have been blessed with meeting some truly wonderful people.” K. Gabalski photo. Q: What’s your greatest frustration? Although Bethany and Michael love Spencerport and are committed to staying in the heart of the community - their location just off the main drag - Route 259/Union Street - makes it difficult for folks to find them. “Every week folks come in who say they didn’t realize we are here,” Bethany says, noting it has taken time even for village residents to find them. They have free-standing signs placed at the corner of Union and Amity as well as in the front of the store and also hang a flag, but in the Spencerport business district, stores and restaurants are almost exclusively along Union Street. The couple also say they wish there were more venues for promoting the village and all it has to offer diners and shoppers. “This could be a destination,” they say and emphasize the importance of shopping locally. Q: Why have you stuck with it through the challenges of the first year? “The best part of the store,” Bethany says, “is that we have been blessed with meeting some truly wonderful people. If it were not for the store, our paths would never have crossed, you can’t put a price on that. We have made wonderful friendships which make us love Spencerport more.” Bethany says she has also fallen in love with being a shopkeeper. Sometimes regulars will stop in just to say “hi” after a stop at the Post Office. Q: What are your plans for the business for the future? “We don’t really know what to expect the second year,” Bethany says. “We hope the business continues to increase.” Bethany and Michael say they are in Spencerport to stay and note it can take three years for a new business to really get on its feet. “We would love to have a bigger place,” they say, “we have lots of ideas. We want to be a positive for the community.” They welcome ideas from customers and see much unlocked potential in the village. “Spencerport is a hidden gem,” Bethany says. “It has so much to offer - it’s a truly great village.” The village is very walkable, they add, and has charming, quaint shops and restaurants. “We wish there was a way to promote Spencerport more,” they say. Butterfly Kisses Sweet Shoppe current hours: Monday Friday 11 a.m. - 6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., Sunday - Closed

Working smoke alarms save lives In observance of both National Fire Prevention Month and National Fire Prevention Week, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) is asking New Yorkers to remember and re-learn basic fire safety rules that can help save lives. This year’s theme, “Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives” is an effort to teach people how smoke detectors are potentially life-saving pieces of equipment. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), two-thirds of fire deaths happen in homes with no smoke alarms or alarms that did not function properly. Though many homeowners and businesses do install smoke alarms in their buildings, they do not conduct regular testing or maintenance. Proper distribution and use of smoke alarms is critical in preventing future fire-related deaths. “We frequently encounter homes without smoke detectors, or with non-working smoke detectors,” said FASNY President Robert McConville. “Installing smoke detectors in your house is the single most important thing you can do to protect not only yourself, but firefighters as well. Smoke detectors give people the warning they need to safely escape a burning building and firefighters are

able to operate more safely knowing all of the occupants have escaped.” Fast facts on smoke detectors •Three of every five home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or nonworking smoke alarms. •In one-quarter of home fire deaths, smoke alarms were present but did not sound. •Almost half of the smoke alarms that did not activate had missing or disconnected batteries. Smoke Detector Tips •Smoke detectors should be installed inside and outside every bedroom and sleeping area and on every level of the building. •Interconnected smoke detectors work best. When one detects smoke, they all alarm simultaneously. •Smoke detectors should be tested monthly Batteries should be replaced annually, or per manufacturer’s instructions. •Smoke detectors should be completely replaced every ten years. Couple organizes Southern Gospel music concerts by Kristina Gabalski They are a couple on a mission, and that mission is to bring Southern Gospel music to audiences around the west side. Joyce and Bob Spamer of Spencerport started organizing and promoting concerts through their Southern Gospel NY organization in 2011, Joyce says. At that time, two concerts were planned each year - one in April and another in October - at the Cultural Life Center at Roberts Wesleyan College. Then this past summer, four area churches opened their doors to host concerts, allowing additional performances to be held in July, August and September. The final two concerts for 2014 are planned in October and November. On October 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the Cultural Life Center at Roberts Wesleyan, the Dixie Melody Boys will perform, and November 7 at 7 p.m. at the Parkridge Free Methodist Church at 10 Straub Road, the 4One Quartet will perform. “God gave us a mission to bring this good music back,” Joyce says. “There’s a message in Southern Gospel music. People who have never been to a concert and then come have said, ‘Wow, this is what I needed to hear. I needed an evening to enjoy myself and just be blessed.’” Joyce is a former event planner and she says Bob got her into going to concerts. “It’s always been his dream to be a promoter,” she explains of her husband. The couple now strives to live that dream by giving people in the Rochester area a place to go out for the evening that “doesn’t cost an arm and a leg and that they can enjoy,” Joyce and Bob say. Tickets generally range from $12-$15 and some concerts are free with a love offering collected. The Spamers say they only charge for the cost of the building and the musical group’s fee. “We try to get groups while they are on the road, that way we can cluster and link (appearances) together. It makes travel less expensive,” Bob says. Many of the groups travel to the area from out of state and it helps with the cost if they are already touring and performing somewhere in the region.

Joyce and Bob have a DBA for Southern Gospel NY, but they don’t consider themselves a business, as they are not in it to make money; in fact, there’s times when it’s hard to break even, but “God’s been good. He’s taking care of it,” they say. Even though there are no financial rewards, there are rewards much more valuable and profound for the Spamers than money. “People come up (following a concert) and say, ‘This was fantastic. I had a need in my life ... I didn’t know you were doing this,’” Bob says. Southern Gospel NY is already busy planning concerts for 2015 which include two bus trips. One to Canada for Praise-fest in May and another in April to Bath, NY, to Family Life for a dinner and concert by the Triumphant Quartet. Bob and Joyce Spamer of The Spamers try to bring Spencerport say their misson is a variety of acts to the area. They are hoping to survey to make Southern Gospel music those who attend concerts to available to area resisdents. see what groups they would like to see perform at future concerts and how to make the events even better than they are. The two describe Southern Gospel as “quartet harmony” - most groups focus on vocals, but some also play instruments. The music is typically original to the group and groups/solo acts sometimes sing music “given” to them by another composer, Bob and Joyce say. “It’s not at all twangy,” Bob explains. Some groups consist of family members, like the Erwins from Texas. The young group consists of three brothers and their younger sister who are all in their teens and early twenties. “It’s good to see young kids getting into this music,” Joyce says. Tickets for the October 17 Dixie Melody Boys show at Roberts Wesleyan are $22, $18 and $16 and are available at www.roberts.edu/clc or by calling 585-574-6008. Tickets for the November 7 4One Quartet concert at Parkridge Free Methodist are $12 in advance or $15 at the door. For tickets, send check or money order and a return self-addressed envelope to: Southern Gospel NY, 3250 Big Ridge Road, Spencerport, NY 14559. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and on Wednesday, October 15, all seven campus locations of Genesee Community College are taking part in a one-day project to Shine the Light on domestic violence through a number of purple-themed initiatives. Much as pink has become identified with the fight against breast cancer, organizers are hoping the color purple draws attention to the plight of victims who suffer violence at the hands of loved ones. This is the third year for the College’s “think purple” campaign. Students from the Student Health Awareness Group, the Alpha Epsilon Gamma service organization, GCC Cheer and Dance Team and GCC Ambassadors will distribute neon purple glow bracelets. “When people put them on we ask that they snap the bracelet and take a moment to think about victims of domestic violence,” GCC counselor Jeannie Burdick said, who’s organizing the event. The Batavia campus will also be awash in the color purple with balloon bouquets imprinted with facts and

Frightening Tales come of life at GCVM Even with a century and more of exposure to movies, television and other new terrors, the horror tales and frightening characters of 19th-century writings still have a hold on us today. Some of these characters come to life in Genesee Country Village & Museum’s Spirits of the Past Theatrical Tour, October 17-18 and 22-25, chilling visitors as they once did in the 19th century. Using its historic village as a canvas, the 75-minute guided tour revisits scenes from the pens of Edgar Allan Poe, Washington Irving, the Brothers Grimm, Robert Louis Stevenson and others. Adaptations are acted out in

Chili Library taps into interest in musicals with Broadway Bags If you’re a fan of Broadway musicals, you’ll be excited to hear about new materials being circulated by the Chili Public Library. The library recently put together Broadway Bags - kits housed in heavy-duty clear-plastic bags which contain materials pertaining to various musicals. The “Fiddler on the Roof” bag, for example, contains the original motion picture DVD, the original Broadway cast soundtrack, a new Broadway cast recording (CD), the book, Tevye the Dairyman and The Railroad Stories by Sholem Aleichem, as well as the complete vocal score. Teen services librarian Cathy Kyle says the idea for the bags was sparked when she and co-worker Valerie Watson Scheg noticed a number of teens coming in to the library and asking for musicals. “There are many different opportunities in the Rochester area for teens to perform on stage,” Kyle explains. “Unfortunately, sometimes it is difficult to find all the information they need if they want to practice their skills. While helping one of our regular patrons, I had mentioned our idea. She thought it was great and gave us a generous donation to get started.” Currently, the library has about 20 kits out for circulation and more are planned. Kyle says she and Watson Scheg scoured the Internet to see what musicals different school districts were doing and also sent out messages on Facebook asking people their favorite musical before deciding which musicals to include. “We include as much material as we can fit in the bags,” Kyle says. “Vocal scores, CDs, DVDs, and of, course, the book the musical is based on.” Just as with books, the kits are checked out for three weeks. Chili is currently the only library offering the Broadway Bags and they can be checked-out there, but you can also ask for one to be sent to another library within the Monroe County Library System, Kyle says. “You can also return them to another library,” she notes, “but we hope you come here to visit. We may burst into song for you.”

Diversions

Each kit has a list of all included materials on the front of the bag. The library staff checks all contents before a bag is checked-out and again when it is returned. The library’s website, http://www.chililibrary.org/ has the continually growing list of kits. Go to the teen page for details. “We are creating musical kits of all types, from ‘Les Mis’ to ‘Cinderella.’ so we are hoping they will appeal to people of all ages,” Kyle says. Right now, Kyle and Watson Scheg are working on Disney kits of any musicals that have been put on stage. “We want these musicals to appeal to everyone and we’re hoping that these can bring families together and make them as passionate about musicals as we are,” Kyle explains. “We’ve had the musicals for a few months and they are very popular. They are always checked-out. It makes Valerie and me thrilled that people love musicals as much as we do.”

RPO to perform “Exotic Adventures” concert in Brockport From ancient Persia to a bicycle that flies past the full moon; from a ghostly Scandinavian harbor to sunny Spain; from a fantastical garden inspired by Mother Goose to the Wild, Wild West, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra will play a program at The College at Brockport that is appropriately titled “Exotic Adventures.” The concert takes place on Friday, October 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the Tower Fine Arts Center Mainstage, 180 Holley Street, on the Brockport campus. Tickets are $16/general, $11/seniors, alumni, faculty and staff, and $8.50/students. They are available online at fineartstix.brockport.edu, by phone at (585) 395-2787, or at the Tower Fine Arts Center Box Office, 180 Holley Street, Brockport. Under the baton of RPO trumpeter and guest conductor, Paul Shewan, the ensemble hopes that they will inspire the audience to take the journey with them. Flying themes bookend the program, which leads off with the “Overture to The Flying Dutchman,” Richard Wagner’s opera about a sea captain fated to spend eternity at the

helm of a spectral ship. Just as the stormy seas are etched into Wagner’s score, the concert’s finale, John Williams’ “Flying Theme from E.T. – The Extra-Terrestrial,” captures the whimsy and excitement of a boy and his alien taking wing on a bike that defies gravity. Also featured on the program are movements from two Rimsky-Korsakov works, “Scheherazade” and “Capriccio espagnol.” The latter, evoking the Iberian peninsula, was written by the composer not while sojourning to Madrid, Barcelona or Seville, but while sitting in a lakeside villa in the middle of Russia. A master orchestrator, the two disparate locales of these works come to life in each note the orchestra plays. A witches’ Sabbath is pretty exotic, no? That was the inspiration for Mussorgsky’s “A Night on Bald Mountain,” which may be better known as one of the more frightening sequences in the classic Disney film “Fantasia.” But this drives home the point of the concert’s program, according to Stuart Ira Soloway, the manager of the Fine Arts Series

at the College: “Music has the ability to transport you, if you listen to the musical cues.” Completing the program are a sequence from Aaron Copland’s ballet Rodeo, “Buckaroo Holiday,” and “The Magic Garden” section of Maurice Ravel’s “Mother Goose Suite.” Shewan returns to Brockport, where he has conducted the RPO several times in the past. When asked if he considered himself to be more of a conductor or a trumpet player, Shewan’s response was an unequivocal “ ‘Yes.’ They have both taken equal precedence in my career and I am equally attached and committed to both. It can be quite a juggling act, but it is worth the extra time that is required to make them work.” The RPO has had a long-standing relationship with Brockport. In addition to its annual concert, they have a presence on campus throughout the year, providing course instructors and guest lecturers. Provided information

A MORE COMFORTABLE DEATH Because medical care and treatment are so central to today’s terminally ill patients, most finish their lives in healthcare facilities. However, increasing numbers of people facing certain death are choosing to die in their own homes under the caring and experienced supervision of a hospice provider. Doing so provides the psychological comfort of being in familiar surroundings with family and friends. Choosing to remain at home during one’s final days also affords an environment in which the dying can maximize the quality of their remaining moments on earth, enabling them to achieve personal closure. In addition, the home provides a comfortable setting for saying good-bye to family and friends. If all this sounds natural and

reasonable, enquire about hospice care. A loved one has died. Gathering with friends and family gives everyone the opportunity to share memories, express emotions, and find comforting support. Whether you choose burial or cremation; whether you select a formal funeral or a more relaxed memorial service, the need for acknowledgment of the loss with family and friends is ever present. For more information about the funeral services we offer, please call THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME at 585-392-7100. Located at 735 East Avenue, we are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Family owned and trusted since 1976.

Saints tie #14 Hilton 0-0 in girls soccer by Warren Kozireski Missed opportunities and the goalkeepers were the story as Churchville-Chili and Hilton fought to a 0-0 tie in girls soccer. The Cadets entered the contest ranked 14th in Class AA in the New York State Sportswriters Association poll. Saints senior Ally Breon had an early scoring chance in the 14th minute as she skirted two defenders along the goal-line before her shot for the near post necessitated a diving stop by Hilton goalkeeper Vanessa L’Abbate. The Saints just missed again in the 22nd minute as Jessica Hyde’s indirect kick from 40 yards out was headed just wide of the right post by Mara Zimmerman. Kyndal Hetzel had her shot on goal off a cross stopped by C-C goalkeeper Lainy Ziegler in the 24th minute. Churchville-Chili opened the second half with Cortney Baird making a double-move on the left goal-line and

Roberts’ Redhawks soccer teams sweep by Warren Kozireski Roberts Wesleyan’s women’s and men’s soccer teams exploded offensively for a combine ten goals in a doubleheader sweep over St. Thomas Aquinas in East Coast Conference action. The women built a 3-0 halftime lead as ChurchvilleChili grad Ellie Swan headed in a Jackie Corbett feed in the 23rd minute. Former Saint Bella Mitrevski, playing in her first game since mid-September due to a sprained ankle but still leading the team in scoring, netted her fifth goal of the season less than eight minutes later with an assist from Swan. With less than one minute before halftime, Heaven Palamitia knocked in the rebound of a corner kick attempt after the initial shot was stopped. In the 71st minute, Laura Herman streaked down the left wing before her attempt rolled along the goal line. Corbett slid and knocked the ball in for her first of the season and the game’s final tally. Brockport native Marissa Sell and Alyssa Jim split time in goal to split the shutout - the second of the season for the Redhawks. It marked the fifth win of the season, but first in the conference for 5-5-0 Roberts. For the men, Stephen Stewart had a pair of goals and one assist to pace the Redhawks to their fifth win. Roberts netted four goals over an eight minute span in the first half to blow the contest wide open. Damien Pagano (Churchville-Chili) began the onslaught converting a Stephen Stewart pass with a diving header in the 22nd minute. Stewart and Malcolm Shaw combined for the next two goals, the first catching the goalkeeper out of position as Stewart’s innocent left foot shot found the back of the net. The second came off a long service leading to a two-on-one. Brother Cameron Stewart scored his second goal of the season on a bullet from 30 yards out set up by Michael Cunningham.

feeding a pass in front that was missed. Just one minute later it was the Cadets’ Noelle Shonk putting one just over the crossbar followed in the next minute with Alexandra Cummins being stopped on a point-blank shot by Ziegler. Cummins headed a Shannon Page pass over the crossbar in the 70th minute before the Saints’ Macaylah Arieno rebound attempt deflect off a defender in the 73rd minute. Hilton had a corner kick in the final 15 seconds of the second overtime, but could not convert. Saints goalkeeper Ziegler and Hilton keeper L’Abbate were each credited with seven saves. C-C improved to 63-4 while Hilton, who has allowed just one goal against divisional opponents all season, moved to 9-1-3 on the season with each having three games remaining in the regular season. In the second half, Cunningham raced down the left wing and caught the goalkeeper playing the pass for Roberts’ fifth goal and his team-leading seventh in the 66th minute. Michael McGinnis sent Alex Loete in all alone for his first collegiate goal in the 81st minute to complete the scoring. Michael Scavone and John Civaglia combined to make five saves in goal for the third shutout of the season. After long road trips for both teams, the women return home for their final three games beginning with Malone on October 25 while both teams welcome LIU Post for their next-to-last game of the regular season on Halloween night.

When It's Time to Move

As your life circumstances change, your housing needs may also change. For example, when your children leave for college or move out on their own, it may be time to re-examine your current housing situation, Perhaps a smaller yard or fewer square feet may make sense as your lifestyle evolves. Or maybe a larger parcel in a quieter neighborhood could keep you busy with gardening. When it is time to sell your home in the Greater Rochester area or to purchase a new one, the first step is to contact a professional Realtor to discuss your situation. What is your home worth? Would it be better to sell it now or keep the house and rent it out? What cost effective fix-ups should you make before marketing the property? If you are moving to a new city, how can you contact a Realtor to introduce you to the community and help you find the perfect new home in a neighborhood that meets your needs? We can help you contact a Realtor anywhere in the country to help you feel more secure in your move. Realtors are professionals whose experience and expertise can make your transition as smooth as possible.
