Two area landmarks listed on Five to Revive 2014 by Kristina Gabalski The Erie Canal warehouse at 60 Clinton Street in Brockport and the Hillside Cemetery and Chapel in Clarendon, Orleans County, are both part of The Landmark Society of Western New York’s 2014 Five to Revive.
The list of historic sites was announced Tuesday, October 7 and also includes the Auditorium Theater in Rochester, designated buildings of historic value in Rochester, and the former Trinity Episcopal Church in Seneca Falls. “This is the second year we are announcing a Five to Revive list to call attention to

key properties in Western New York that are in need of investment,” Landmark Society Executive Director Wayne Goodman said. “We can’t stress enough that these are significant historic properties whose rehabilitations can become catalytic projects for the neighborhoods and communities that surround them.” Five to Revive Chair Tom Castelein, vice-president of preservation on The Landmark Society Board, said the initiative enhances the organization’s ongoing efforts to support revitalization in Western New York. “Our inaugural 2013 list of properties are moving closer to the goal of contributing to economic revitalization in their communities,” he said. The 60 Clinton Street Erie Canal Warehouse in Brockport is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the only surviving building related to the local reaper manufacturing industry, whose products were sold to an international clientele. “A highly visible anchor on the Erie Canal in the Village of Brockport, this historic industrial building is unique in Monroe County,” the Landmark Society says of why it was selected. “It’s exceptional historic and architectural significance make it an important candidate for revitalization after many years of vacancy.” “The Erie Canal Warehouse in Brockport has the potential to be a real catalyst for investment and revitalization in its immediate area,” said Caitlin Meives, a preservation planner with The Landmark Society. “With its location alongside the Canal, a rehabbed building would be a wonderful asset for visitors and residents alike. It’s also worth noting that, as a former industrial canalside building, it’s an extremely unique resource. A lot of these structures are no longer standing.” Brockport Mayor Margaret Blackman agrees. She told the Suburban News/ The Herald, “60 Clinton Street is an historical canal front property whose development has the potential to revitalize the entire street.” The Hillside Cemetery and Chapel at
the intersection of Route 237 and South Holley Road in Clarendon dates to 1866 and is a significant example of two periods of cemetery design. The 1894 Gothic Revival Chapel is a primary feature of the cemetery but is suffering from deferred maintenance and lack of funds. “The Hillside Cemetery and Chapel are important examples of historic landscape architecture and building architecture in Orleans County,” the Landmark Society said. “They are highly visible resources at the southern gateway into the Village of Holley. With such historic and architectural significance, the Hillside Cemetery and Chapel could, with proper funding and maintenance, serve as attractive assets in the Clarendon and Holley communities.” Caitlin Meives said Hillside Cemetery and Chapel “have had a dedicated group of local preservationists in the Town of Clarendon advocating on their behalf for a few years now and we hope to partner with them and the town to explore funding opportunities and plan for long-term stewardship of the designed landscape and the chapel.” Clarendon Historical Society member Erin Anheier said she and the Society are pleased The Landmark Society selected Hillside Cemetery and Chapel as part of the 2014 Five to Revive and explains that it will help in raising awareness of the need to restore the chapel before further deterioration occurs. “It is a beautiful and unique building that is very important to the streetscape of South Main Street, Holley,” Anheier said. “We really want to once again make it suitable for public use. The Town of Clarendon is proud to have such an historic treasure as Hillside Cemetery and its chapel within our borders. The Five to Revive designation should emphasize the importance of the building to the local population and hopefully encourage their support for the project. The Clarendon Historical Society and the Holley-Murray Historical Society are working together to raise funds for the restoration.

VILLAGE OF BROCKPORT RESIDENTS PLEASE TAKE NOTICE FINAL BRUSH PICKUP FALL 2014 Brockport Lions construct wheelchair ramp - Betty Sietmann was having an increasingly difficult time getting in and out of her home at the County Line Trailer Park. She contacted Brockport Lion and former District Governor Greg Lund who visited Betty and assessed the situation. Always looking for opportunities to help those in need, the Brockport Lions Club gladly took on the task. A team led by Lion Walt Windus obtained lumber and materials, designed, built, and installed a wheelchair ramp for Betty. The Lions met several evenings to build the sections of the ramp in Brockport and then transported the ramp for the final installation which occurred on Sunday, September 29. The picture shows just some of the Lions who were involved in the project including Lions Brian Ingraham, Phillip Moore, Dave Moore, Betty Sietmann, Lions Tammy Deacon, Keith Marshall, and Charlie Deacon. Residents urged to speak up about Senior Center I am puzzled and concerned by the rumors and uncertainty surrounding The Sweden Senior Center. It occupies a fine building, erected in 1980 with a HUD grant of $450,000, (equivalent to $1,293,000 in today’s dollars) and has since undergone two major renovations. The Center prospered for many years, but it has recently begun to suffer from neglect. Hours have been cut back (it now closes at one o’clock) and the Director’s position is vacant with no effort being made to fill it. Without leadership, programs, activities and member participation are declining. Unconfirmed reports say the Town Board has considered abandoning it altogether and selling the building to a “for profit” organization. Their attitude seems to be, “If seniors don’t use it more, we’ll liquidate the place.” That is like the man who told his stove, “Give me some heat and I’ll give you some wood.” Our Senior Citizens are an asset to the community. They populate the volunteer boards, sustain our chari-
ties, give their time for good causes, and in general, use less than their share of public resources while contributing more than their share in taxes. This is a shabby way for the Town to treat them. It is embarrassing to compare our center to an active and benevolent program like the one in Chili, which has a dynamic leader, 1800 members and a busy schedule of activities for every interest. A citizen’s committee has formed to advise the Town Board in this matter. We applaud their efforts and wish them every success. It is said, “The easiest thing is to do nothing,” and it is easy to see what will happen if we do nothing about the Senior Center. I urge all citizens to take an interest, and make themselves heard. teer to walk children to school once a week, once a month or whenever they can manage it. It is fun! Thank you to all who made this 9th Annual Brockport Walk To School Day such a success: from the community artisans who crafted the Walk To School Trophy, to the High School Service clubs who cheered the children, to the college athletes who walked with the children, to the High School rock group who provided great music, to the police department who provided extra security on campus, to our great volunteers and committee members, to Kalir farms for providing apples to the school, principals and vice-principals for adding their energy and support and to the parents and relatives who walked their children to school. Together we make a difference.
Brockport’s Barclay Elementary School claimed the first Walk To School Champion Trophy by having the highest percent of its students walking to school on Walk To School Day, October 1. An amazing 30% of the Barclay student body walked to school followed by 19% of Hill School students and 16% of Ginther School students. Rounding out the day, 5% of Oliver Middle School and 4% of High School students walked to school. An impressive 420 Brockport students walked to school on October 1. Walk To School Day, the first Wednesday in October, is intended to highlight the health benefits of walking or biking to school with the hope that children will continue to walk or bike to school on a regular basis. Walking School Buses, where a parent walks with his or her children and neighborhood children to school, is becoming more popular and I would encourage parents, grandparents and neighbors to look around their neighborhoods and volun-

Proposed Clarkson project plays into November election The Clarkson town board election, this coming November 4, between Jackie Smith and Tom Trapp, may well turn out to be a referendum on the large and controversial Brook Field at Clarkson development. This very large proposed project with well over 300 rental units and several 2 and 3 story apartment buildings hinges on approval of government incentives. The key issue will be on whether or not this project receives “incentive zoning.” Supervisor Kimball previously said the vote on the “incentive zoning” would take place in September. From the public hearing I attended on this in July though, it seems that two of the town board members, Patrick Didas and Christa Filipowicz, from comments they made, are opposed to this project or at least have serious reservations about it. If three town board members vote no for this “incentive zoning” it would most likely kill the project. This means this November 4 election between incumbent Jackie Smith and Tom Trapp is key to the project going forward. So I would suggest the delay on the vote on the “incentive zoning” for this project is because Supervisor Kimball fears that Jackie Smith’s vote for the project before the election could well cost her the election. I spoke to Jackie Smith recently and asked her directly if she was for or against the “incentive zoning” for this project. She said she wanted to wait to get more information. I respectfully suggest the voters of this town have a right to know how she will vote on this issue, before the November 4 election. Other town board members seem to think they have enough information to have an opinion. I understand her reluctance to state her position if she is for the “incentive zoning.” It seemed to me that everyone that spoke at the public hearing on this matter was against the project. I think the vast majority are against it. It is not reasonable that Jackie Smith gets to keep her
opinion unknown until after the election. If town board member Jackie Smith doesn’t reveal her position on this matter before the election I will infer that she is for the “incentive zoning” and this project. An article in the October 5, 2014 Suburban News and Hamlin-Clarkson Herald on this subject attributes to Kimball amazing statements and very specific statements of dollar impacts on taxes and costs in Clarkson that are not substantiated and are seemingly based on assumptions unwarranted. Kimball astoundingly tries to make the case that this development of over 300 apartments units is better than 65 single family homes. Kimball states that in that location near East Avenue and Sweden Walker Road because people could see in backyards “… there would be no sense of community whatsoever.” Who is he to make such a statement? Kimball further supposes to know that the apartments would not be a draw for families. How does he know this? From ridiculous assumptions he comes up with figures purporting to show that Clarkson would make out much better tax wise with apartments than with houses. Kimball is playing loose with figures to sell this proposal. There is a good reason to vote this year. The “incentive zoning” for this project can and should be voted down by this town board. This is not about property rights. It’s about government incentives, government money, to make viable projects that would not happen otherwise and are contrary to the will of the people. Consider your vote for town board may be better based on the candidate’s expected vote on this project rather than party affiliation. John Lemke Clarkson

Couple organizes Southern Gospel music concerts by Kristina Gabalski They are a couple on a mission, and that mission is to bring Southern Gospel music to audiences around the west side. Joyce and Bob Spamer of Spencerport started organizing and promoting concerts through their Southern Gospel NY organization in 2011, Joyce says. At that time, two concerts were planned each year - one in April and another in October - at the Cultural Life Center at Roberts Wesleyan College. Then this past summer, four area churches opened their doors to host concerts, allowing additional performances to be held in July, August and September. The final two concerts for 2014 are planned in October and November. On October 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the Cultural Life Center at Roberts Wesleyan, the Dixie Melody Boys will perform, and November 7 at 7 p.m. at the Parkridge Free Methodist Church at 10 Straub Road, the 4One Quartet will perform. “God gave us a mission to bring this good music back,” Joyce says. “There’s a message in Southern Gospel music. People who have never been to a concert and then come have said, ‘Wow, this is what I needed to hear. I needed an evening to enjoy myself and just be blessed.’” Joyce is a former event planner and she says Bob got her into going to concerts. “It’s always been his dream to be a promoter,” she explains of her husband. The couple now strives to live that dream by giving people in the Rochester area a place to go out for the evening that “doesn’t cost an arm and a leg and that they can enjoy,” Joyce and Bob say. Tickets generally range from $12-$15 and some concerts are free with a love offering collected. The Spamers say they only charge for the cost of the building and the musical group’s fee. “We try to get groups while they are on the road, that way we can cluster and link (appearances) together. It makes travel less expensive,” Bob says. Many of the groups travel to the area from out of state and it helps with the cost if they are already touring and performing somewhere in the region.

Joyce and Bob have a DBA for Southern Gospel NY, but they don’t consider themselves a business, as they are not in it to make money; in fact, there’s times when it’s hard to break even, but “God’s been good. He’s taking care of it,” they say. Even though there are no financial rewards, there are rewards much more valuable and profound for the Spamers than money. “People come up (following a concert) and say, ‘This was fantastic. I had a need in my life ... I didn’t know you were doing this,’” Bob says. Southern Gospel NY is already busy planning concerts for 2015 which include two bus trips. One to Canada for Praise-fest in May and another in April to Bath, NY, to Family Life for a dinner and concert by the Triumphant Quartet. Bob and Joyce Spamer of The Spamers try to bring Spencerport say their misson is a variety of acts to the area. They are hoping to survey to make Southern Gospel music those who attend concerts to available to area resisdents. see what groups they would like to see perform at future concerts and how to make the events even better than they are. The two describe Southern Gospel as “quartet harmony” - most groups focus on vocals, but some also play instruments. The music is typically original to the group and groups/solo acts sometimes sing music “given” to them by another composer, Bob and Joyce say. “It’s not at all twangy,” Bob explains. Some groups consist of family members, like the Erwins from Texas. The young group consists of three brothers and their younger sister who are all in their teens and early twenties. “It’s good to see young kids getting into this music,” Joyce says. Tickets for the October 17 Dixie Melody Boys show at Roberts Wesleyan are $22, $18 and $16 and are available at www.roberts.edu/clc or by calling 585-574-6008. Tickets for the November 7 4One Quartet concert at Parkridge Free Methodist are $12 in advance or $15 at the door. For tickets, send check or money order and a return self-addressed envelope to: Southern Gospel NY, 3250 Big Ridge Road, Spencerport, NY 14559. Roberts’ Redhawks soccer teams sweep by Warren Kozireski Roberts Wesleyan’s women’s and men’s soccer teams exploded offensively for a combine ten goals in a doubleheader sweep over St. Thomas Aquinas in East Coast Conference action. The women built a 3-0 halftime lead as ChurchvilleChili grad Ellie Swan headed in a Jackie Corbett feed in the 23rd minute. Former Saint Bella Mitrevski, playing in her first game since mid-September due to a sprained ankle but still leading the team in scoring, netted her fifth goal of the season less than eight minutes later with an assist from Swan. With less than one minute before halftime, Heaven Palamitia knocked in the rebound of a corner kick attempt after the initial shot was stopped. In the 71st minute, Laura Herman streaked down the left wing before her attempt rolled along the goal line. Corbett slid and knocked the ball in for her first of the season and the game’s final tally. Brockport native Marissa Sell and Alyssa Jim split time in goal to split the shutout - the second of the season for the Redhawks. It marked the fifth win of the season, but first in the conference for 5-5-0 Roberts. For the men, Stephen Stewart had a pair of goals and
one assist to pace the Redhawks to their fifth win. Roberts netted four goals over an eight minute span in the first half to blow the contest wide open. Damien Pagano (Churchville-Chili) began the onslaught converting a Stephen Stewart pass with a diving header in the 22nd minute. Stewart and Malcolm Shaw combined for the next two goals, the first catching the goalkeeper out of position as Stewart’s innocent left foot shot found the back of the net. The second came off a long service leading to a two-on-one. Brother Cameron Stewart scored his second goal of the season on a bullet from 30 yards out set up by Michael Cunningham. In the second half, Cunningham raced down the left wing and caught the goalkeeper playing the pass for Roberts’ fifth goal and his team-leading seventh in the 66th minute. Michael McGinnis sent Alex Loete in all alone for his first collegiate goal in the 81st minute to complete the scoring. Michael Scavone and John Civaglia combined to make five saves in goal for the third shutout of the season. After long road trips for both teams, the women return home for their final three games beginning with Malone on October 25 while both teams welcome LIU Post for their next-to-last game of the regular season on Halloween night.

Sigillo Chiropractic Marathon Winner and Chiropractic
When American Meb Keflezighi (pronounced kuh-FLEZ-ghee) crossed the finish line first at this year’s emotional 2014 Boston Marathon, he had a team of supporters to thank. Among them was his chiropractor, San Diego-based Dr. Christopher J. Sigillo, D.C. Devin Young, DC. Their relationship began some four years ago when the runner was at an elite training center in California. After winning the grueling 26.2 mile even in Boston in April, Keflezighi had this to say to the staff of Dynamic Chiropractic regarding his chiropractor: “As an elite athlete, recovery and therapy is essential to staying healthy and competitive. I have seen Dr. Devin Young as my chiropractor for years and see him twice a week during training. His care has been especially helpful leading up to and including the Boston Marathon. I have been able to recover faster and easier after races” As Young told the magazine, the primary goal of chiropractic adjustment is the “reduction of interference in the body.” Pre- and post- competition treatment allow for, respectively, “maximum performance on race day,” and “optimum healing.” You don’t have to be an elite marathon runner to benefit from regular treatment by a chiropractor. But if you have an athletic passion, talk with your chiropractor about how treatment might help your performance. Presented as a service to the community by

Chili Library taps into interest in musicals with Broadway Bags by Kristina Gabalski If you’re a fan of Broadway musicals, you’ll be excited to hear about new materials being circulated by the Chili Public Library. The library recently put together Broadway Bags - kits housed in heavy-duty clear-plastic bags which contain materials pertaining to various musicals. The “Fiddler on the Roof bag, for example, contains the original motion picture DVD, the original Broadway cast soundtrack, a new Broadway cast recording (CD), the book, Tevye the Dairyman and The Railroad Stories by Sholem Aleichem, as well as the complete vocal score. Teen services librarian Cathy Kyle says the idea for the bags was sparked when she and co-worker Valerie Watson Scheg noticed a number of teens coming in to the library and asking for musicals. “There are many different opportunities in the Rochester area for teens to perform on stage, Kyle explains. “Unfortunately, sometimes it is difficult to find all the information they need if they want to practice their skills. While helping one of our regular patrons, I had mentioned our idea. She thought it was great and gave us a generous donation to get started. Currently, the library has about 20 kits
out for circulation and more are planned. Kyle says she and Watson Scheg scoured the Internet to see what musicals different school districts were doing and also sent out messages on Facebook asking people their favorite musical before deciding which musicals to include. “We include as much material as we can fit in the bags, Kyle says. “Vocal scores, CDs, DVDs, and of, course, the book the musical is based on. Just as with books, the kits are checked out for three weeks. Chili is currently the only library offering the Broadway Bags and they can be checked-out there, but you can also ask for one to be sent to another library within the Monroe County Library System, Kyle says. “You can also return them to another library, she notes, “but we hope you come here to visit. We may burst into song for you. Each kit has a list of all included materials on the front of the bag. The library staff checks all contents before a bag is checked-out and again when it is returned. The library’s website, http://www.chililibrary.org/ has the continually growing list of kits. Go to the teen page for details. “We are creating musical kits of all types, from ‘Les Mis’ to ‘Cinderella.’ so we are hoping they will appeal to people of all
Staff at the Chili Public Library has put together a collection of Broadway Bags in response to interest in musicals. K. Gabalski photo. ages, Kyle says. Right now, Kyle and Watson Scheg are working on Disney kits of any musicals that have been put on stage. “We want these musicals to appeal to everyone and we’re hoping that these can bring families together and make them
as passionate about musicals as we are, Kyle explains. “We’ve had the musicals for a few months and they are very popular. They are always checked-out. It makes Valerie and me thrilled that people love musicals as much as we do.
Two Brockport nurses earn top honors at March of Dimes Awards Gala Elizabeth and Mary Scheda, mother and daughter from Brockport, were honored among the most outstanding of their peers as “Nurse of the Year during the 4th annual March of Dimes Nurse of the Year Awards Gala at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center. The sold-out event honored nurses from Buffalo to Albany, and raised over $75,000 for the March of Dimes, which for more than 75 years has worked to improve the health of mothers and babies.

Elizabeth (mom), won in the Medical/Surgical category. She has been practicing for 33 years, many of those at Rochester General Hospital. Nominated by her peers, Elizabeth says that she was very flattered to have been nominated, and completely stunned to have won in her category, knowing that there are many hundreds of nurses in the region doing the same work as she. She maintains that for her entire career, her only objective has been to care for her patients as though they are family. Her peers called her “one of the greats. Mary (daughter), won in the Rising Star category. She recently passed her one-year anniversary as an RN on an oncology unit at University of Rochester Medical Center. She was nominated by a patient’s family member, having made all of the medical and logistical arrangements necessary for the terminally ill patient to return home long enough to be married. Mary says she has been amazed that even with the short time in her role, she can make such an important difference for her patients and their families. She noted that her personal experiences with friends and family members succumbing to cancer have influenced her deeply, and she credits her mom with showing the way to being a great nurse. The process to earn “Nurse of the Year honors begins with a nomination by a co-worker or patient, and proceeds with the nominee submitting a written account of their accomplishments as a nurse. The applications are then reviewed by a March of Dimes committee after the applicants’ and others’ names have been removed, and a single winner is selected in each of several categories.

GCC supports Domestic Violence Awareness
REAL ESTATE & CONTENTS
College to host “Think Purple” event October 15
Saturday, OctOber 18 • 9:30 am
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and on Wednesday, October 15, all seven campus locations of Genesee Community College are taking part in a one-day project to Shine the Light on domestic violence through a number of purple-themed initiatives. Much as pink has become identified with the fight against breast cancer, organizers are hoping the color purple draws attention to the plight of victims who suffer violence at the hands of loved ones. This is the third year for the College’s “think purple” campaign. Students from the Student Health Awareness Group, the Alpha Epsilon Gamma service organization, GCC Cheer and Dance Team and GCC Ambassadors will distribute neon purple glow bracelets. “When people put them on we ask that they snap the bracelet and take a moment to think about victims of domestic violence,” GCC counselor Jeannie Burdick said, who’s organizing the event. The Batavia campus will also be awash in the color purple with balloon bouquets imprinted with facts and
figures about this devastating form of abuse that can be physical, emotional, psychological or sexual in nature. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. information tables will be set up in the Forum highlighting the YWCA Domestic Violence Program, RESTORE Rape Crisis Services, GCC Counseling and Campus Safety. Purple t-shirts emblazoned with “GCC Supports ... Paws Off” will also be sold for $5, with the proceeds benefiting the Genesee County Domestic Violence Program. The ‘Clothesline Project’ will be featured on the Forum stage for viewing and survivors and supporters are offered the opportunity to create their own shirt. GCC’s campus radio station, WGCC 90.7 FM will join the event to interview students and help spread the word about domestic violence. As the evening falls, GCC’s Clock Tower Plaza will be illuminated with purple lights to further call attention to the issue following the lead of the SUNY Administration Building in Albany. For information, contact Marketing Communications Associate Director Donna Rae Sutherland at (585) 3430055 ext. 6616, or via email: dsutherland@genesee.edu. Provided information

Bees tie #4 Kendall by Warren Kozireski Byron-Bergen and host Kendall each netted a goal in the first half in a 1-1 tie. The Eagles were ranked fourth in Class C in the New York State Sportswriters Association Ocober 6 poll. Kendall threatened in the fourth minute as Jake Adams sent a cross from the left wing to Skyler Heller, but a diving save by Bees goalkeeper Brandon Burke kept it out of the net. Byron-Bergen broke through at 11:24 as Adam Strassner converted a Jordan Coffta pass from the left corner for the 1-0 lead. It was short-lived as Kendall tied the contest in the 24th minute. Jake Adams passed to Will Condo, whose shot glanced off the goalkeeper and in off the right post. The Eagles had the two best scoring opportunities the rest of the way in the tightly checked game with Burke saving a Condo header off a corner kick by Cody Travis in the 55th minute. He made another clutch save in overtime as Kendall patiently passed the ball between Condo, Zach Vogt and Adams before the scoring attempt was stopped. Byron-Bergen wraps up the regular season with four consecutive home games - the finale October 17 against rival Holley. Kendall plays Wilson Magnet at Sahlen’s Stadium in Rochester October 14 before wrapping up their regular season at Albion on the 17th as well. They are expected to be the top-seed for the Section V playoffs that begin the week of October 20.
Hawks celebrate senior night
by Warren Kozireski Seven seniors suited up for their final regular season home volleyball match as Holley fell to Attica in three games. A Jessica Skehan kill brought the Hawks to within one point of the lead at 13-12 in the first game before Attica closed out on a 12-0 run. After dropping game two 25-11, Holley was competitive in the third with an early lead. The Blue Devils built a 17-10 lead before Tessa McArthur had a block for a point. Helana McLean later had an ace and McArthur a kill to close to 24-20, but the match concluded on a net serve. Shelby Allen led Holley on defense with three digs. The 2-9 Hawks defeated Kendall and Lyndonville earlier this season. In addition to co-captains McArthur, Skehan and outside hitter Allen, Kayla Brooks, Ariel Frazer, Kayla Guck and Alicia Lutes all finished the home portion of their high school volleyball careers.
