Changes in store for former Sweden Senior Center by Kristina Gabalski The next several weeks will be a time of transition for Seniors in the Brockport/Sweden/Clarkson community who use the former Sweden Senior Center - most recently known as the Lodge on the Canal - located at 133 State Street in the Village of Brockport. Programming for seniors will move to the Sweden/ Clarkson Recreation Center off Route 19 south of the village, as the town will lease the entire Lodge building to Lifetime Assistance. “I hope everyone will give it a chance,” Town Board member Lori Skoog says. Skoog is a long-time advocate for both Seniors and the Senior Center, and led a fight in 2014 to stop the town from selling the building. At that time, a group of community members stepped forward to work with the town with the goal of keeping the Senior Center at its village location, as well as develop more community-wide programming at the site. It was hoped that usage of the center would grow, but that has not been the case, Skoog explains. She held a meeting Thursday, July 27 at the Lodge, to discuss the move of programming with groups and individuals who have continued to use the building. Skoog said those who use the facility on a regular basis were understanding about the decision to shift activities to the Sweden/Clarkson Recreation Center. Skoog says she is now working with Recreation Center staff to create a special “gathering place” at the Recreation Center for Seniors and anyone in the community to enjoy. “It would be used for cards, small classes, reading the paper, socializing, etc.,” she says. “Hopefully we will have coffee available during part of the day.” Skoog says she wants to give the space, “a familyroom feel,” with lamps, comfortable furniture, tables and chairs. “The artwork is being brought up from The Lodge and will hang in the gathering room, creating a gallery atmosphere,” she adds.

Lifetime Assistance is welcoming seniors to continue to participate in the lunch program at The Lodge location and Skoog says the Medical Motor busing service, blood pressure checks, Agape, and Stretch and Tone will still take place at The Lodge. Additionally, “They will still be able to bake cookies there,” she says. In addition to the “gathering place” at the Recreation Center, Skoog says other improvements have been made to accommodate the move of Senior activities. “There is new flooring in another room for line dancing,” she says. There are now parking spaces for the disabled, and Skoog says she hopes to get a railing in place from parking spots to the building. She plans to continue her work of advocating for seniors in the community. “I’ve been working and meeting with Jill Wisnowski, Recreation Center Supervisor, and Joe Kincaid,” Skoog says. Kincaid is assistant to the recreation supervisor and is working to make the transition as smooth as possible. “He has been meeting with all the groups at The Lodge,” Skoog says. “He cares and is very thoughtful.”
The physical moving of items such as pianos for the chorus (Sweden Senior Singers), was expected to begin the week of August 7. Skoog says the move should be complete by the third week of September. A list of new programs and locations will be available prior to Labor Day, she says. “We want people to be as informed as possible,” she says. “We will do the best we can for a smooth transition and will gradually increase programming to suit the needs of people who are there. I believe they will be pleasantly surprised.” Skoog noted that some seniors are already involved in programming that currently takes place at the Recreation Center. “They will help with the transition, too,” she says. Seniors are a growing component of the Sweden/Clarkson/Brockport community who make a vital contribution, Skoog observes. “They are a huge resource,” she says, and points to groups such as those who knit and quilt. Quilters make 300 quilts each year to donate to cancer patients, migrant families, and Veteran’s hospitals. Knitters have made 8,000 hats which go to cancer patients locally. Others make dresses for Dresses Around the World. “They have an impact locally and internationally,” Skoog says. “Their contributions are incredible. Seniors are a big part of all communities and have a lot to offer. It’s time that they are properly recognized.” Skoog also recognized the Sweden Senior Association, Inc., which has given over $150,000 to the Sweden Senior Center over the years. She acknowledges that it will be difficult for them to leave their beautiful space on the canal in which they have invested so much. “They deserve to have something,” she says. “They should continue to meet at the Recreation Center and maybe new people will join the group.” Skoog emphasizes that the town is leasing The Lodge to Lifetime Assistance. “Having the two buildings combined fiscally makes sense, but I am totally against selling,” she says.
Erie Canalway photo contest calls for entries As New York celebrates the 200th anniversary of the building of the Erie Canal in 2017, amateur and professional photographers are invited to capture the canal corridor’s distinctive sense of place for the 12th annual Erie Canalway Photo Contest. Winning photos will be featured in the 2018 Erie Canalway calendar. Images should convey the wealth of things to do and see along the waterway and express the unique character of the canal and canal communities. Images will be judged in four contest categories: On the Water, Along the Trail, Canal Communities, and Classic Canal. Judges will select
first, second and third place winning images in each category, as well as 12 honorable mentions. Images must be taken within the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, which spans 524 miles across the full expanse of upstate New York. It encompasses the Erie, Cayuga-Seneca, Oswego and Champlain canals and their historic alignments, as well as more than 230 canal communities. Entries must be postmarked by August 31. Local artist paintings on display at the Parma Public Library Chris VerSteeg works in several different mediums which she says, brings her great pleasure. Her command of subject matter and her decision to use: pastels for animals, acrylics and watercolor for landscapes and her declared favorite, graphite for portraits and seascapes brings an enjoyable variety to her show. Her work has a poetic edge to it. One of her favorite pieces depicts the moon driven tide causing the sea to give and take back its treasures. Chris’s interest in art began at age 4. In high school, her art teacher selected Chris to attend weekly free art classes at the Memorial Art Gallery. She went on to attain a scholarship to RIT. Just as her artwork shows great variety, she has also used her artistic talents in many fields, from designing of-
fice interiors to working as a floral designer. Today Chris’s art inspiration has centered on creating images of old homes, buildings and vehicles as they return to the earth. She continues to explore new mediums and speaks of her current desire to work more loosely and with a brighter pallet. Chris’s show will be on display at the library through August. This is the seventy-second in a series of exhibits hosted by the Parma Public Library which feature area artists. Tune in to GCVM’s Old-Time Fiddlers’ Fair Music at its most traditional will flow throughout Genesee Country Village and Museum on August 19 and 20, as the museum hosts its Old-Time Fiddlers’ Fair, the largest and oldest showcase of traditional music in Western New York. Musicians, ranging from the polished professional to the fledgling beginner will fill a variety of venues with stringed instruments, from fiddles and guitars to harps and dulcimers. Six stages, including one of the museum’s historic 19th-century churches with its natural acoustics, offer performances from individuals and groups. A series of free musicians’ workshops are presented each day of this event, which has been held annually since 1981. Featured performers include Mitzie Collins and the Striking Strings, Flint Hill Folk, Rochester Strathspey & Reel Society,
Emma & Carl Eddy, the Fiddlers of the Genesee, Almost Irish, the Rochester Irish Musicians’ Association, Mark Panfil and the Buffalo Bluegrass Youth Ensemble as well as NYSCA-sponsored tradition pairs that include Jim Kimball, Jackie Hobbs and Chad Miller. All performers receive free admission and need to have their instrument in hand at the admissions gate in order to receive a pass for the day - along with one guest to the event. Archery course scheduled in Kendall An instructor certified by the Department of Environmental Conservation will conduct an archery course Saturday, August 26 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Those interested in attending need to register in person at the Kendall Town Hall in the Recreation Office, located at 1873 Kendall Road, Monday, August 14, between the hours of 6:30 and 8 p.m. The free course is required for first time bow hunters who wish to obtain a New York State archery license. It will cover safe bow handling combined with responsible and ethical hunter conduct. Pre-course work is required for this course. Register early as
space is limited. Registration is handled on a first-come first-served basis. Students must be a resident of New York State. The instructors prefer students be eligible to hunt (12 years or older) as of January 1, 2017. Minors under the age of 12 can not obtain a license or hunt wildlife. Brockport dental practice makes mouth guards for Brockport football athletes Brockport Smiles dental practice will supply the Brockport Blue Devil football junior varsity and varsity athletes a free custom fitted mouth guard for the upcoming football season. Brockport Smiles welcomed a new dentist, Dr. Joseph Russo to their office a year ago. Dr. Joe is a former D1 football player from Lafayette College where he earned his undergraduate degree. The National Youth Sports Foundation for the Prevention of Athletic Injuries reports that if an athlete does not wear a mouth guard, damage to the teeth is 60 times more likely. A mouth guard isn’t
just for protecting teeth, they can also help prevent lacerations, fractures, concussions and dislocations. As a dentist, and a former D1 football player, Dr. Joe understands the importance of wearing a mouth guard while playing sports. Protecting a player’s safety with a proper mouth guard is something everyone at Brockport Smiles is passionate about. Brockport Smiles will host an after-hours event on Wednesday, August 23 at 5:30 p.m. The event is open to the player’s families and will also include a homemade cookie contest judged by the athletes. Hunt Tests for retrievers by T.R. Hendrick As I start to put together a plan on how I want to train my Labrador Retriever pup Rosalee (aka “The White Tornado,” aka “Drop it!”), I am thinking about joining a retriever club. I know there are a couple very good ones in the area and the dog training knowledge in these clubs is enormous. Most members are more than happy to give advice or help out with a problem you may be having with field dog training. I knew I did not want to get into actual field trials with Rosalee. I had dipped my toe into that world with my first Lab and it turned me off. Some of the trainers that I met were super competitive and the things they asked of their retrievers were not realistic to a scenario that might come up in an actual hunting situation. Over the last few years I have been hearing some great things about Hunt Tests for Retrievers. In these tests you don’t compete against other dogs, it’s just you and your retriever trying to master different skills … a retriever obstacle course of sorts. Needing to learn more, I reached out to Scott Vanallen. Scott is a veteran waterfowler and top water dog man. He has a beautiful five-year-old female Golden Retriever by the name of Willow. Scott has worked hard training Willow and taken her through the ranks. She is now a Master Hunter (MH) and has qualified for the very prestigious National Master Hunter, passing six master hunt tests within a given year. For Willow to have gotten this far there is no doubt that Vanallen knows his stuff and I asked him to explain the Hunt Tests in layman’s terms. “Hunt Tests differ from field trials as they are more applicable to real hunting situations. These tests are not competitions against other dogs, so they are great places for people seeking training tips from more experienced trainers. They are also great locations to find good bloodlines for hunting retrievers. “These tests do not necessarily have to be for hunters. Not all of the people who enter their dogs hunt; they just want a highly trained dog and enjoy the challenge of the tests against themselves and their dog. The tests are about the dog and yourself, and the ability to work together as a team. “Training and testing in the off-season provides a great advantage for increasing wounded bird recovery rates throughout the hunting season. It also provides offseason strengthening and conditioning that is much needed throughout the hunting season.” Scott informed me that there are many great dog clubs and organizations throughout New York State that offer Hunt Tests. They are offered through the American Kennel Club (AKC) and also through the North American Hunting Retriever Association (NAHRA). Both have very similar test
situations. The closest club is the Western New York Retriever Club, of Wolcottsville (50 miles west of Rochester). Another close club is the Finger Lakes Retriever Club; they generally train and test out of Baldwinsville, New York (75 miles east of Rochester) or Mexico, New York. Scott went on to explain that the retriever hunt tests are pass/fail tests. It is a test that consists of the dog and the handler against a given test scenario and set-up provided by the judges. The tests score the dogs on their natural abilities such as marking (retrieving) style, perseverance and the more advanced levels (Senior and Master); and the trainability of the dog in steadiness, control, response and delivery. Within each level of the Hunt Test, the marks (retrieves) and expectations of the dog and handler greatly increase as the dog advances from one title to the next. The first level is the Junior Hunt level. This is a basic training level that does not yet require steadiness or handling. At the Junior level, dogs are tested on four single retrieves – two on land and two on water. The distance of those retrieves can be up to 100 yards. The dog may be brought to the line on leash, but is expected to be under control. Once it marks the fall, the dog can be released off lead and is expected to find, retrieve and deliver the bird to hand. If the dog fails to find any of the birds or does not deliver the bird to hand, it fails the test. The nice thing is you can return at any time to test your dog again. The Senior Hunt level is a more advanced level that begins testing the trainability of the dog through steadiness and handling along with its ability to retrieve. At the Master Level, dogs are tested with multiple marks (retrieves). Marks can be up to 150 yards for this level and become much more complicated for the dog, really testing his/ her memory on marking. The retriever is expected to honor another working dog off lead without breaking. Typically around here, there is a test in Wolcottsville and Baldwinsville in July. There also is a test in Baldwinsville (or Mexico) offered in September. Sometimes, there are double Junior and Senior Hunt tests in one weekend (one on Saturday and one on Sunday). With that said, you can travel to tests in Albany, Long Island, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Scott points out, “You do not have to be a professional trainer to run your dog through the ranks and titles. There are plenty of amateurs that do a great job training and handling their own dog.” Scott has much more detail on each level of testing than I have room for in this column. He knows this world, is serious about his passion and has a highly trained dog to prove it. If you have a young hunting dog or just want to observe some great dogs in action, go visit one of these clubs and observe these retrievers. You will be impressed.

Molinari says the Churchville community has been very supportive of the event sponsored by the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. “We want to remember our family and friends,” he said of the significance of the luminaries, “it’s a way to celebrate their lives.” Laura Carlson, American Cancer Society Community Development Manager, Relay for Life, attended the event and said the Luminaria Ceremony is, “the embodiment of what we are doing ... to celebrate, remember and give back ... some of the best volunteers I have are right here,” she said of Churchville. Proceeds from the event are used in the fight against cancer. “The American Cancer Society provides incredible lifesaving information and services to help people navigate through their cancer journey,” Carlson says. “We have several of these programs right here in Rochester, including the Hope Lodge, Patient Navigation, and Road to Recovery, and let us not forget the $8 million in research being used at the University of Rochester Medical Center.” The Churchville-Chili LEO Relay for Life Team has raised close to $5,000, Carlson said. Mayor Nancy Steedman said 160 luminary bags were purchased this year, a much larger number than in 2016. “I am so pleased at the participation,” she said. “So many bags are in honor of people who are fighting cancer.”

It now hangs in the entrance hall of the museum next to the painting of her husband.” About seven months ago, George Dante of Wildlife Preservations in New Jersey, restored the museum’s stuffed golden eagle, which is displayed clutching a hare in its talons. “No one knows who the taxidermist was and who donated the article to our museum,” Savard said. “However, when George finished the restoration, he said, ‘Whoever did this knew what he was doing. It is a beautiful specimen.’” Since the return of the restored eagle, the museum has been holding a “Name the Eagle” contest. Suggestion forms for a name can be dropped in the box near the eagle. In September, the museum board will select the best name from the suggestions and will award $20 to the winner. The work by Gary Albright and George Dante was paid for from a trust fund left to the museum by Vivian Shafer, a former resident of Brockport. Visitors are invited to the museum at 49 State Street. Hours are: Tuesday evening, 6 to 8 p.m.; Wednesday afternoon, 2 to 4 p.m. and evening 6 to 8 p.m.; Sunday afternoon, 2 to 4 p.m. Private tours can be arranged by calling the village offices, 637-5300.

Artifacts restored at Emily L. Knapp Museum Several major collection items in Brockport’s Emily L. Knapp Museum of Local History recently have been restored. Two historic maps and a rare painting of Nancy Seymour were restored by Gary Albright of Honeoye Falls. Albright, with a Masters in Art Conservation, is a professional at restoring historical papers, photos and maps. The maps were of Village of Brockport (1861) and of Monroe County (1858). “The maps were deteriorated and unusable,” said museum volunteer Sue Savard, “but, like piecing together a giant puzzle, Gary rebuilt them and they look brand new.” “Jim Glidden, a local retired homebuilder, generously donated his time and skill to build shadowboxes in which to house the maps,” Savard said. “They are now on display in the children’s room and the picture gallery.” Gary Albright also recently restored a very rare painting of Nancy Seymour, wife of William Seymour, owner of the State Street building that houses the Village of Brockport offices and the Knapp Museum. “The painting was found dirty, wet and stained under the eaves of the attic,” Savard said. “It’s a major find, as

This year, the luminaries stretched all the way around the gazebo in Village Memorial Park, both in honor and in remembrance of those who are battling or have battled cancer. “It’s getting stronger and stronger every year,” Marty Molinari said of the third annual Luminaria Ceremony held Wednesday, August 2. Molinari is a cancer survivor and advisor of the Churchville-Chili LEO Club. LEO members decorate the paper-bag luminaries and help to set them in place in the park for the ceremony, which draws those from around the community whose lives have been touched by the disease.

Calling all artists for Pigs on Parade 2017 The fourth annual â&#x20AC;&#x153;Pigs on Paradeâ&#x20AC;? is underway and open to anyone interested in designing and painting a piggy bank. The pigs will come to life this fall when placed around town to collect change for the Cadet Cupboard, a food pantry for Hilton Central School District students in need of nutritious meals. The Hilton Education Foundation seeks artists to get involved with this fundraising event and to consider painting and/or decorating one of these specially designed pigs provided by the Foundation. Pick up a pig Tuesday, August 29 in the boardroom at Quest School at 7 p.m., and drop off decorated pigs Wednesday, October 4 in the boardroom at 7 p.m. Mid October, the completed pigs will then go on parade at designated stores in the Hilton community. Once in place, the community is invited to partake in feeding the pigs with their favorite food â&#x20AC;&#x201C; money. One-hundred percent of the contributions raised will go to benefit the Cadet Cupboard. Bill was a graduate of Spencerport High School. He retired after 31 years at Eastman Kodak. After retirement, Bill moved to Eustis and was a Gold Life Master Bridge player. A service in Hilton will be held on August 13 at 1 p.m. at St. George’s Episcopal Church. He will be laid to rest at Parma Union Cemetery, Hilton. There will be an additional service in Eustis, Florida at a later date. Donations can be made to Hospice Care, Eustis, Florida in his memory.

Byron-Bergen CSD’s Capital Project to have zero tax impact for community On September 21 the Byron-Bergen Central School District will bring a capital project proposal to vote. It will enable the district to maintain facility and program standards that are vital for providing students with a meaningful and safe educational experience. The $18.4 million project will be paid for with building state aid, energy savings and capital reserve funds. There will be no additional increase in local taxes. “We have carefully examined a recently completed Building Condition Survey,” said BBCSD Superintendent Mickey Edwards. “There is a pressing need to update and refurbish building roofs, dehumidification system, windows, lights and fire alarm systems, and make other safety improvements. Our Elementary School has not seen major updates or renovations since opening in 1969. Some of our classroom space does not meet current state guidelines, and restrooms are not American with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant.”
“We are very happy to report that this project will be able to utilize State Capital Aid, accounting for almost 86 percent of the costs. The remainder will be paid for with existing district Capital Reserve funds and projected energy savings. As a result, there will be no increase for our taxpayers,” added Edwards. Pending voter approval, the project is slated to begin during the summer of 2018. Voters are invited to attend one of the informational meetings scheduled for August 17 and September 7. Both meetings will be held in the Elementary School cafetorium at 6 p.m. The final vote is September 21 from noon to 9 p.m. in the Elementary School cafetorium, located at 6971 West Bergen Road, Bergen. Lake Champlain Maritime Museum’s replica 1862 canal schooner Lois McClure made a stop at the Spencerport Depot and Canal Museum on Monday, August 7 on her 2017 Legacy Tour commemorating the Erie Canal Bicentennial. As an authentic replica, Lois McClure has no means of propulsion other than sail, so the 1964 tugboat C.L. Churchill provides power. While in port the schooner crew shared a maritime perspective on the relationship between waterways and trees, canal boats and forests, and how they contributed to the transformation of the United States.

Cohn is one of the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum’s co-founders, and captains the tugboat Churchill which tows the Lois McClure canal schooner.
