2015 Holiday Lights Spectacular Parade award winners announced by Kristina Gabalski Fantastic weather by early December standards, brought out the crowds for the Fifth Annual Holiday Lights Spectacular Parade Sunday evening, December 6 in Brockport. Organizers at the Brockport Police Stetson Club say in addition to large crowds, 2015 was a great year for entries. Decked out fire trucks, horses, Cub Scouts riding illuminated bikes, monster trucks and the Kendall Lawn Chair Ladies were among the participants. All entries in the parade had to include holiday lights. The 2015 overall Grand Prize winner went to the Brockport DPW with a red,

white and blue illuminated truck with snow maker. Santa and his helpers who rode in a restored antique sleigh won most creative. Best Non-Profit came to a tie between the Hamlin Fire Department and the Hamlin Dog Shelter, and Santa’s Choice was awarded to Cub Scout Pack 316. The Brockport Fire District received Honorable Mention along with the monster trucks from the Lake Alice mud bog. Organizers thank emcees Caurie Putnam-Ferguson and Bob Lonsberry and those working behind the scenes, Rachael Blair, in particular. Next year’s parade is set for Sunday, December 4, 2016.

Several decked out fire trucks participated in the parade, including this one from the Fancher-Holley-Murray fire district. R. Nicholson photo.

Holiday Minions made a special appearance riding atop an illuminated fire truck following the many fire fighters who literally glowed on their way across the canal bridge. R. Nicholson photo.

Brockport’s Holiday Lights Spectacular featured everything from glittering floats, cars, trucks, marching bands and even lighted carriage rides with horses. R. Nicholson photo.

BEYOND WORDS Music has always played a very important role in funeral services because it helps mourners access their feelings, thoughts, and memories. When preplanning a funeral, therefore, it is important to select songs and musical pieces that will evoke your memory in the most meaningful ways. We have all grown up with songs that have served as background music to our lives. In one sense, nearly everyone has a “playlist” that reads like an autobiography. If so, funeral preplanning provides an important opportunity to present friends and family with music and lyrics that are near and dear to your heart and

that can be used to channel your essence during the most important time of remembrance. Music is integral to the funeral service. It allows the community to express convictions and feelings that words alone may fail to convey. It has the power to console and uplift the mourners and to strengthen the unity of the assembly in faith and love. For more information about the funeral services we offer, please call THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME at 585-392-7100. Available seven days a week, 24 hours a day, we are located at 735 East Avenue. Family owned and trusted since 1976.

Former Brockport Mayor receives settlement in a lawsuit against the village police chief by Kristina Gabalski Former Brockport Mayor Maria “Connie” Castaneda has received a $90,000 settlement stemming from a lawsuit she filed against the Village, Police Chief Daniel Varrenti and Police Lieutenant Mark Cuzzupoli. Castaneda filed the civil lawsuit seeking fair compensation following her arrest by Brockport Police on criminal charges of official misconduct and falsifying business records. She was accused of illegally renting an apartment in her home to students while she was mayor. The criminal charges were later thrown out by Ogden Town Justice David Murante. Castaneda has said she felt the charges were politically motivated and in a press release following the settlement stated: “Let the ninety thousand dollar payment tendered to me in response to my federal lawsuit ... send a strong message to our elected officials about the need for additional checks and

balances against official power - particularly police power. “Any abuse of official power for private gain is the worst kind of betrayal of the public trust,” she continued, “the kind that chills and stifles free speech and political dissent; the kind that corrupts democracy.” The Village of Brockport also issued a statement regarding the settlement agreement: “A primary component of this settlement agreement is that neither the Village, nor Chief or Lieutenant acknowledge, admit or are found to have engaged in any misconduct or wrongdoing as was alleged by Ms. Castaneda. The Village, the Chief and Lieutenant maintain they did not engage in any such misconduct or wrongdoing. The Village Board believes these officers served our community well and deserve our thanks and support.” The village’s insurance policy will pay for the settlement. “The Village will incur no expense,” the Village’s statement said.

We have just the gift for that special someone!

Dr. Christopher J. Sigillo, D.C.

Exercise is generally a good thing, but there are right and wrong ways to go about it. You certainly don’t want to injure yourself while doing something that’s meant to benefit you. So here are a few things to consider:

Some experts believe you’re at higher risk for back injury in the first 30 minutes or so after you get up in the morning. Because you’ve been lying down for eight hours, the discs in your spinal column are filled with more fluid than they will be as the day progresses and you spend time in an upright position. So give yourself an adjustment period after getting out of bed before diving into vigorous physical activity. When starting any new exercise program, check with your physician to make sure you are physically up to the demands of the activity, whether it’s walking or playing tennis. Talk with your chiropractor about effective (and prudent) ways to exercise and strengthen your back. Presented as a service to the community by

by Doug Hickerson In the season of gift-giving, several of our local citizens were asked what very meaningful or lifechanging gift they have received over the years. Thinking of “gift” broadly, it was suggested the gift might be material, but more likely other categories like wisdom, advice, intervention, spiritual encouragement, etc. It might be realized as a gift only in retrospect. I reached some of the interesting people I wrote about in the past in this newspaper. Below are the responses from some of them. In the December 6 edition, Part 1 gave stories from: Alicia Fink, Barb Deming, Buck Noble, and Lori Skoog. Visit westsidenewsny.com to re-read Part 1. Dr. Jim Goetz I have received so many gifts in my lifetime: Terrific parents, a great education, a meaningful job, a wonderful wife and family, a terrific community, to name a few. It is difficult to distill them down to one. As you see, none of these gifts relate to material goods. I think the unifying theme to the gifts mentioned, and the biggest gift I have received, is “love” -- both how to receive it and how to give or express it. Once I fully understood that happiness (mine and those around me) was not only enhanced by love but defined by it, my entire outlook on life changed. This “gift” has been given to me over a lifetime by family, friends and teachers. Love is the gift I treasure the most. Sarah Hart I was 25 when my mother died. Debate and drama ensued over settling her estate, as my sister had chosen to live in the family home. Living in my in- laws attic, baby expected, we needed

a house. Fortunately my in-laws swooped in to help us purchase an older house full of artistic and architectural character. A small gift from the estate was finally received, and with my passion for old homes, coupled with my husband’s carpentry skills, we first used this money to save a dilapidated Park Avenue home. Today, we have leveraged that money into a thriving rental business featuring only Victorian buildings. The rehabilitation of these buildings has helped teach our children a work ethic, afforded me studio space at the local art gallery, and kept us close as a family. With that gift my mother’s legacy is alive and well. Peggy Hale My significant gift is the ongoing experience of God’s grace. There have been and are many people in my life who, through their behavior, have been the hands and feet of God and a witness to his grace. I am grateful for the presence of other children of God in my life. The gift of gratitude for God’s grace- made known through such people as my husband David, my children, grandchildren, parents, other family members, and the community of Brockport/Sweden, is a daily experience which brings many other gifts to me. Chet Fery “The Bread Man” A few years back a student surprised me with a Christmas gift wrapped in used wrapping paper. I asked and she helped me unroll the abundance of tape that consumed the small package. I smiled as a beautiful snow globe was unveiled, but was distracted by another student. To this day, I wonder if I properly expressed my heartfelt gratitude for this thoughtful gift. Years later I realized she gave me two gifts that day. The snow globe was a life lesson to never miss the opportunity to to express gratitude for an act of kindness.

MANITOU

The Hilton United Methodist Church, 21 West Avenue, will host its first Service of the “Longest Night” on Sunday, December 20 at 6 p.m. The service is scheduled around the winter solstice - the longest night of the calendar year. “We’ve lost three members of our congregation in less than a month,” said the Rev. Jennifer Green. “That coupled with everything that has happened in Paris and around the world made us realize that a service that focuses on upholding our congregation and the community is timely.” Anyone who has experienced divorce, an empty nest, illness or loss of any kind is welcome to attend the service, which will include lighting candles and the Advent Wreath, singing Advent hymns, praying together and celebrating the Holy Communion. Those who know someone currently facing a difficult time are encouraged to bring him or her to the service as well. “This time of joy and expectation can often overshadow the pain and hurt many experience during the season…,” said Green, who has been pastor at Hilton United Methodist Church since 2008. “This church is intentional about upholding members of the community in whatever season of life they may find themselves in.” Refreshments will be served following the service. For more information, call 392-8761 Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Worship times include: Sunday Worship from 10 to 11 a.m. (childcare provided) and Sunday School for children and adults from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
