2015 Holiday Lights Spectacular Parade award winners announced by Kristina Gabalski Fantastic weather by early December standards, brought out the crowds for the Fifth Annual Holiday Lights Spectacular Parade Sunday evening, December 6 in Brockport. Organizers at the Brockport Police Stetson Club say in addition to large crowds, 2015 was a great year for entries. Decked out fire trucks, horses, Cub Scouts riding illuminated bikes, monster trucks and the Kendall Lawn Chair Ladies were among the participants. All entries in the parade had to include holiday lights. The 2015 overall Grand Prize winner went to the Brockport DPW with a red,

white and blue illuminated truck with snow maker. Santa and his helpers who rode in a restored antique sleigh won most creative. Best Non-Profit came to a tie between the Hamlin Fire Department and the Hamlin Dog Shelter, and Santa’s Choice was awarded to Cub Scout Pack 316. The Brockport Fire District received Honorable Mention along with the monster trucks from the Lake Alice mud bog. Organizers thank emcees Caurie Putnam-Ferguson and Bob Lonsberry and those working behind the scenes, Rachael Blair, in particular. Next year’s parade is set for Sunday, December 4, 2016.

BEYOND WORDS Music has always played a very important role in funeral services because it helps mourners access their feelings, thoughts, and memories. When preplanning a funeral, therefore, it is important to select songs and musical pieces that will evoke your memory in the most meaningful ways. We have all grown up with songs that have served as background music to our lives. In one sense, nearly everyone has a “playlist” that reads like an autobiography. If so, funeral preplanning provides an important opportunity to present friends and family with music and lyrics that are near and dear to your heart and

that can be used to channel your essence during the most important time of remembrance. Music is integral to the funeral service. It allows the community to express convictions and feelings that words alone may fail to convey. It has the power to console and uplift the mourners and to strengthen the unity of the assembly in faith and love. For more information about the funeral services we offer, please call THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME at 585-392-7100. Available seven days a week, 24 hours a day, we are located at 735 East Avenue. Family owned and trusted since 1976.

Thoughtful stocking stuffers to give for the holiday season (StatePoint) While the big ticket items are always a thrill to bestow and receive during the holidays, sometimes smaller stocking stuffers are the most needed and appreciated. Here are some ideas to get started: Tech accessories Gifting new tech devices? Be sure to also equip recipients with all the accessories they will need to enjoy their gifts on-the-go. From hard shell cases that offer protection from slips and drops, (as these incidents are bound to occur) to app store gift cards for quick downloading of the software needed to make the most of these items. Batteries included Nothing kills the thrill of receiving a new device quite like the phrase “batteries not included.” From remotecontrolled cars to digital cameras, gift recipients won’t want to just look at their new toys, they’ll want to use them right away. Avoid disappointment by

providing juice for all those batteryoperated goodies. Travel For those loved ones who have traveled to spend the holidays with the family, consider a thoughtful gift that can be used during the journey home. From travel-sized board games to snack packs or tiny notebooks, these items will come in handy whether gift recipients are traveling by plane, train or automobile.

We always, in all ways, give you more.

No Heat?

Gifts of a lifetime Part two of two by Doug Hickerson

In the season of gift-giving, several of our local

citizens were asked what very meaningful or lifechanging gift they have received over the years. Thinking of “gift” broadly, it was suggested the gift might be material, but more likely other categories like wisdom, advice, intervention, spiritual encouragement, etc. It might be realized as a gift only in retrospect. I reached some of the interesting people I wrote about in the past in this newspaper. Below are the responses from some of them. In the December 6 edition, Part 1 gave stories from: Alicia Fink, Barb Deming, Buck Noble, and Lori Skoog. Visit westsidenewsny.com to re-read Part 1. Dr. Jim Goetz I have received so many gifts in my lifetime: Terrific parents, a great education, a meaningful job, a wonderful wife and family, a terrific community, to name a few. It is difficult to distill them down to one. As you see, none of these gifts relate to material goods. I think the unifying theme to the gifts mentioned, and the biggest gift I have received, is “love” -both how to receive it and how to give or express it. Once I fully understood that happiness (mine and those around me) was not only enhanced by love but defined by it, my entire outlook on life changed. This “gift” has been given to me over a lifetime by family, friends and teachers. Love is the gift I treasure the most. Sarah Hart I was 25 when my mother died. Debate and drama ensued over settling her estate, as my sister had chosen to live in the family home. Living in my in- laws attic, baby expected, we needed

a house. Fortunately my in-laws swooped in to help us purchase an older house full of artistic and architectural character. A small gift from the estate was finally received, and with my passion for old homes, coupled with my husband’s carpentry skills, we first used this money to save a dilapidated Park Avenue home. Today, we have leveraged that money into a thriving rental business featuring only Victorian buildings. The rehabilitation of these buildings has helped teach our children a work ethic, afforded me studio space at the local art gallery, and kept us close as a family. With that gift my mother’s legacy is alive and well. Peggy Hale My significant gift is the ongoing experience of God’s grace. There have been and are many people in my life who, through their behavior, have been the hands and feet of God and a witness to his grace. I am grateful for the presence of other children of God in my life. The gift of gratitude for God’s grace-- made known through such people as my husband David, my children, grandchildren, parents, other family members, and the community of Brockport/Sweden, is a daily experience which brings many other gifts to me. Chet Fery “The Bread Man” A few years back a student surprised me with a Christmas gift wrapped in used wrapping paper. I asked and she helped me unroll the abundance of tape that consumed the small package. I smiled as a beautiful snow globe was unveiled, but was distracted by another student. To this day, I wonder if I properly expressed my heartfelt gratitude for this thoughtful gift. Years later I realized she gave me two gifts that day. The snow globe was a life lesson to never miss the opportunity to to express gratitude for an act of kindness.

Thank You

I would like to thank the person who found and helped me at the Fairfield Cemetery. I had fallen and this person, walking his dog, saw I needed help, he called 911. Many thanks to him, and everyone who came. I also would like to thank the people at Slayton Place Restaurant for everything they do for me too.                       Jim Slobbe

Tyler returns as interim board member The Spencerport Board of Education is pleased to welcome back Janet Tyler, to serve as an interim member for the seat vacated by Michael Zale. The Board unanimously approved Tyler on December 8, after a thorough review of qualified letters of interest. Tyler, who

Janet Tyler

previously served on the board from 201215, will officially begin on January 1, 2016 and serve until the next community budget vote on May 17, 2016. According to education law, after that vote, the candidate with the third highest votes will serve out the remainder of Zale’s term until 2017. Board President William Sweeney said of the selection, “We are very appreciative to Janet Tyler for her willingness to serve on the board during this interim. She brings her previous knowledge and experience and will be able to step in without any need for transition. This advantage will be invaluable to the district, especially as we begin our budget development for 2016-17.” Sweeney went on to express the board’s appreciation for all the community interest during this selection process. “We certainly are grateful for the level of community engagement and the willingness to volunteer,” he said. “We certainly hope that all the interested residents consider future volunteer opportunities, whether it is to seek board election or serve on other district committees.” Tyler will replace Zale, who submitted his intent to resign after being elected to the Monroe County Legislature in November. Great holiday gifts to help kids learn (StatePoint) One of the best ways to motivate kids to learn is by making it fun, and the holiday season is the perfect opportunity to equip the kids in your life with gifts that are equal parts entertaining and educational. For some great gift ideas that turn what could be a chore into a good time, consider the following: Watch it grow Whether one chooses to do-it-yourself or opt for a store-bought kit, a terrarium offers children a hands-on lesson in horticulture, biology, earth science and responsibility. Terrariums, which make great gifts, can be used to grow beautiful plants and flowers, or edible herbs for the kitchen. Pair this gift with books about nature and gardening and one may inspire a green thumb for life.

Kids’ size science Bourgeoning scientists will love making their own observations and discoveries. Luckily, kids-size scientific apparatus are available for those just beginning to explore everything from cells of plants to the cosmos. Telescopes and microscopes designed with kids in mind can help young ones develop the skills needed to succeed in science. When making the gift list this season, don’t forget the notion that fun and learning are two peas in a pod.

Hilton United Methodist Church to host Service of the “Longest Night” by Grace Griffee The Hilton United Methodist Church, 21 West Avenue, will host its first Service of the “Longest Night” on Sunday, December 20 at 6 p.m. The service is scheduled around the winter solstice - the longest night of the calendar year. “We’ve lost three members of our congregation in less than a month,” said the Rev. Jennifer Green. “That coupled with everything that has happened in Paris and around the world made us realize that a service that focuses on upholding our congregation and the community is timely.” Anyone who has experienced divorce, an empty nest, illness or loss of any kind is welcome to attend the service, which will include lighting candles and the Advent Wreath, singing Advent hymns, praying

together and celebrating the Holy Communion. Those who know someone currently facing a difficult time are encouraged to bring him or her to the service as well. “This time of joy and expectation can often overshadow the pain and hurt many experience during the season…,” said Green, who has been pastor at Hilton United Methodist Church since 2008. “This church is intentional about upholding members of the community in whatever season of life they may find themselves in.” Refreshments will be served following the service. For more information, call 392-8761 Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Worship times include: Sunday Worship from 10 to 11 a.m. (childcare provided) and Sunday School for children and adults from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Make music Many children wish to explore the world of music, but unfortunately, their schools may not offer the exact programs they are looking for. Nurture musical talent and interest at holiday time, however, if one’s child is indecisive, consider a temporary rental of his or her instrument of choice and a starter pack of just a few lessons.

Proposed Clarkson projects impact town’s gateway area by Kristina Gabalski Residents have their say about incentive zoning for additional development at the Route 260 and Route 104 intersection in Clarkson --

Churchville-Chili’s 7th Grade Band used their holiday spirit and extra practice time to raise nearly $2,000 in funds to buy new shoes for underprivileged children. Provided photo.

C-C 7th Grade Band members bring new shoes to children in poverty This is the third year that the generous members of the Churchville-Chili 7th Grade Band have put their hearts into hard work for a great cause. Their annual “Christmas Shoe Practice-A-Thon” event ran for just two weeks, during which they collectively practiced over 20,000 minutes, and raised almost $2,000 in order to provide 555 pairs of new shoes to children living in poverty. “Students promised to increase their practice times if sponsors would make donations for the Christmas Shoes Project,” said band director Shelley

Sadler. “The donations support the work of the Life Today organization, which provides durable water-resistant shoes to children in 30 different countries. For many kids, this will be the first pair of shoes they have ever owned.” The Grades 7-8 Instrumental Bands will perform a holiday concert on Friday, December 11 at 7 p.m. in the C-C PAC theatre. The community is invited to join them and to hear the results of all their hard work. Provided information

Suburban News and The Herald

Traffic, traffic and traffic were the major concerns expressed by Clarkson residents and leaders during a pubic hearing held Tuesday, November 24 regarding incentive zoning for an Express Mart project proposed for the southeast corner of Sweden Walker Road (Route 260) and Ridge Road (Route 104). Residents who spoke said they understand development is coming to the busy intersection which serves as a gateway to the town, but traffic along Sweden Walker Road already is very heavy, particularly during commute hours, and they worry the gas station/convenience store will only make things worse. Julie Lapinski, who lives on Sweden Walker Road, said it has become the route to take for motorists who need to cross the Erie Canal between Route 31 and Route 104. She said traffic is constant in both directions outside her home. “It’s not a safe situation,” Lapinski said. “How much more (traffic) can it take? It’s non-stop. I don’t know what your vision is for the town. I don’t see it getting better.” Clarkson Supervisor Paul Kimball said the town board is very concerned over traffic in the area and is working to get the state to recognize there is a problem. “Both are state highways,” Kimball explained. “We disagree with (the state’s) conclusion. Something needs to be done now. We are having discussions with the DOT.” The New York State DOT has determined that the Brook Field at Clarkson housing development proposed for the southwest corner of the same intersection will not have a major impact on traffic flow. Supervisor Kimball suggested turning lanes or even a round-about as possible solutions to ease traffic congestion. He said the town plans to work with state representatives in an effort to, “get the state to do something.”

He encouraged residents to write letters to the DOT to express concerns. Michael Montalto, project engineer for Costich Engineering - which is working on both the Express Mart and Brook Field projects for separate developers - noted that both projects together might “warrant” improvements from the state. “It might offer more leverage with the DOT ... the cumulative effect,” he said. In addition to the Express Mart convenience store (approx. 7,192 square foot including space for two restaurant brands) the proposal includes a separate 1,040 square foot unattended car wash and a motor vehicle fuel sales facility (approx. 3,936 square foot) to be under a canopy. The Brook Field at Clarkson proposal includes eight two-unit senior duplex buildings and an 87 unit senior apartment building; 12 two-unit villas and 6 sixteenunit apartment buildings with a community center and pool; and 5 mixed-use buildings each with eight apartments and 6,000 square foot of commercial space along Ridge Road. The project would be built in three phases, Supervisor Kimball said. Developers of the Brook Field project are also seeking incentive zoning from the town. Town leaders and developers say both projects fit with the “hamlet” concept of pedestrian friendly development called for in Clarkson’s Comprehensive Plan. Town leaders defined for residents what a “hamlet” is. “It will look like a village,” Supervisor Kimball said, “with sidewalks on both sides of the road to create a sense of community when driving in.” Also on November 24, Clarkson Town Board members unanimously approved a negative declaration regarding the environmental impact of the Brook Field at Clarkson development. “Traffic is our primary concern,” Supervisor Kimball said. Town Board members are expected to review the environmental impact of the Express Mart project at their next meeting December 8, as well as work on details of the incentive zoning proposal for Brook Field.
