World class fife and drum festival coming to Macedon-Palmyra area by Kristina Gabalski

The Towpath Volunteers Drum Line, shown above performing at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Savannah, Georgia, as well as groups from Italy, France, Belgium and the USA, participate the weekend of September 19 and 20 and Monday, September 21 in the Towpath Volunteers Fife and Drum Corps 2015 World Fife and Drum Friendship Festival in Macedon and Palmyra. Web photo used with permission.

The thundering of drums and the shrill of fifes will be prominent sounds locally during the weekend of September 19 and 20 and Monday, September 21 as the Towpath Volunteers Fife and Drum Corps hosts the 2015 World Fife and Drum Friendship Festival in Macedon and Palmyra. Towpath member Debbie Willson says the one-time event will be world class as corps from Italy, France, Belgium and the USA will be participating. “We wanted to share our country with them,” she says and explains the Towpath Volunteers were invited in 2011 to go to France and perform with corps located there. “On a whim we went,” Willson remembers, and since that time members of the Towpath Volunteers have returned again and again. “We have made friends in France, Italy, Belgium and Switzerland,” Willson says. “In Italy, we play at a carnival that dates back to Medieval times. The people are so generous, friendly and warm. We want to

share our music, culture and history with them like they did with us.” All events are free and open to the public. On Saturday, September 19, all participating groups will be playing throughout the day at various locations during Canal Town Days in Palmyra. Opening Ceremonies are set for 10 a.m. The Canal Town Days parade is at 4 p.m. on September 19. On Sunday, September 20, the corps will march in the “Take Pride in America” parade at noon on Main Street in Macedon. At 4 p.m. on Sunday, a concert is planned at Long Acres Farm on Eddy Road in Macedon. Willson says to bring your own seating for the event. The concert gives the groups an opportunity to play together, Willson says. The concert includes a special musical selection. “We will play one song from each country in a medley,” she says. “We want people to come out and see what we do. This is going to be the biggest thing to hit Macedon in a long time.” The Festival continues Monday, September 21 with a concert at 11 a.m. at Old Fort

Niagara in Youngstown, Willson says. The concert is free, but there is admission to the Fort. Towpath Volunteers Fife and Drum Corps have been bringing “Our American Heritage” to life since 1978, Willson says. The group marches in 30-50 parades each year and has performed for U.S. Presidents, marched in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Gasparilla parade in Florida, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Savannah, Georgia and three times at Disney World. In addition to wearing colonial-style uniforms, the group utilizes handmade wooden fifes and rope tension deep snare and bass drums like those used by the country’s founding fathers. On Friday, September 18, the corps will visit local schools and the VA hospital in Canandaigua.

Hilton Cadets trounce Gates Chili in boys soccer by Warren Kozireski Using a ball-control, almost surgical offensive attack, Hilton netted seven first half goals and 11 overall in defeating an overmatched Gates Chili Spartans boys soccer team 11-0. Michael Provost used his left foot to convert a pass from Nickolas Simone just 8:03 into the contest to open the offensive onslaught. Brett Healey headed in a cross off the foot of Evan Pirnie at 17:11 before Jeffrey Hibbard converted twice over a 2:28 span. The first came after a long pass from 40 yards out from Provost and the second

converting a give-and-go in the box with Matthew DeFeo. DeFeo made it 5-0 in the 35th minute racing down the left wing and cutting to the middle before putting the ball inside the left post. Simone gathered up a loose ball around midfield and dribbled in before finding the net in the 37th minute. Jesse DePrez finished off the first half scoring by heading in a cross from the right wing by Jacob Vinch at 38:00. Provost opened the second half with a goal off a failed clearing attempt in the 43rd minute for his second goal and third point of the contest. Meikal Lambov made it 9-0

Maier leads Spencerport Rangers by Warren Kozireski Junior Taylor Maier won her first singles tennis match against the Greece Lightning and was the only winner versus Honeoye Falls-Lima playing second singles as Spencerport started the 2015 season with a 1-3 record. Maier won 6-2, 6-0 against Greece before her 6-2, 6-1 decision against HF-L. Fourth singles Nikki Nguyen won her tough fought match 7-4, 6-4 while the

Rangers swept all three doubles matches. Senior Katie Cannan and junior Jessica Huckenberger teamed up at first doubles for a 6-1, 6-1 straight set victory. Nina Varges and Jenna Coffey won 6-0, 6-0 at second doubles while Olivia Schlierf and Amber Rosignolo won their third doubles match via forfeit. The Rangers defeated Greece 5-2 with the only two losses due to injury forfeits, but lost to HF-L 6-1.

with an unassisted tally at 66:02. Simon Garno then finished the scoring with two goals over a three minute span. The first was converted after a pass from Simone and the second by Hibbard. Provost and Hibbard each finished with a pair of goals and one assist. Garno had

two goals, Simone had a pair of assists and DeFeo added one goal and one assist. In total ten different players had at least one goal or one assist while senior goalkeeper Brian Wilkin registered the shutout in net for the Cadets.

Eagles ace Hawks in girls volleyball by Warren Kozireski Two seasons removed from their last girls volleyball league title, Kendall used a combined 30+ service aces to register their second league win against zero losses with a hard-fought 25-23, 19-25, 25-23, 26-24 victory over visiting Holley. The first game was tied on six separate occasions including at 19-19 before Holley scored four straight points -- two on aces by Paige Lampo to lead 23-19. But the Eagles took advantage of six straight missed digs to pull out the win. The Hawks scored the final six points of game two after it was tied 19-19 including a kill by junior Helena McLean and an ace served by Lampo. In game three, Kendall led by as many as seven points before allowing the lead to shrink to 23-22 on an ace by McLean.

But Alexis Payton slammed a kill down the right sideline to help the Eagles to a 25-22 win. Neither team could generate much offense in the fourth game scoring points mostly on their opponents mistakes, but Holley led 24-23 before Kendall scored the final three points -- one on Madison Rath’s ace -- to seal the win. Holley captain Chelsea Norman led the Hawks with four aces and two kills while Jennah McMillan and McLean combined for seven more aces. Kendall senior setter Sarah Pearson led with five kills, and nine assists and added nine aces. Junior Emily Mattle led all players with 11 aces and Chelsea Wright paced the Eagles defense with six digs while also contributing eight aces and a pair of kills.

Friends of Hamlin Beach are for the birds The bluebirds, wrens, tree swallows, and purple martins, that is! Three volunteers from the Friends of Hamlin Beach State Park conduct an annual census of these birds. Jackie Galle, Maryann Hurlbut, and Jim Lugert monitor the nest boxes throughout Hamlin Beach State Park from April through August. They begin checking to see if any critters have inhabited the boxes during the winter, cleaning out the boxes and spraying them with a mild disinfectant. Then, they monitor the boxes to check for evidence of nest building. Once a week, the Friends check every one of the 36 bluebird boxes and 14 purple martin

boxes in their ‘condo,’ counting the eggs laid, chicks hatched and fledged. Several birds have two or three broods during the summer. This year, five nest boxes contained two broods, with a total of 96 bluebirds hatched. Tree swallows also used the bluebird boxes, occupying 11 boxes and fledging 67, while house wrens built nests in three houses. Over the summer, a house may be occupied by a bluebird after a tree swallow has successfully had a brood. Purple martins are very social birds and enjoy living near each other: thus, a purple martin ‘condo’ was erected next to the Park Office. Of the 14 units, nine were occupied this summer resulting in 17 chicks. The condo and the nest boxes will be taken down in the fall, cleaned, and stored for the winter, ready to go up again in the spring. The volunteers just completed their fourth year collecting statistics on the bluebirds, sending their results to the New York State Bluebird Society. The bluebird is New York State’s designated bird and numbers have been in decline, primarily because of competition for nesting sites by invasive sparrows. People across the state help in the restoration of the state bird by providing bluebird houses in their yards. Anyone interested in purchasing a bluebird house may contact the Friends of Hamlin Beach State Park at facebook. com/FOHBSP or hamlinbeach.org. Provided information

Incentives for Brook Field developer bad idea Property rights are not curtailed by voting down “incentive zoning” for the proposed mega project “Brook Field at Clarkson.” Property rights do not include getting special incentives from the government to make the project viable. The project right now could proceed guided by the zoning laws now in place. Giving the developer an incentive to develop is a poor idea. The public hearing for this will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday, September 22 at the lodge at Ridgewood Park, 8000 Ridge Road, Clarkson. The property considered for development is along Sweden Walker Road from East Avenue to Ridge Road, more or less. The purpose of “incentive zoning” could be to get a developer to give you more green space, for example, in a project that would move forward without the incentive zoning. To offer an incentive to the developer to proceed

with a project that would otherwise not be viable, and develop a large open area that may otherwise remain agricultural as it was for many years, is curious. Other than the town getting some money sooner rather than later, I don’t see the benefit to Clarkson. I might also ask, is there a worse place in Clarkson to put this project? I know a traffic study can be had that shows the traffic is manageable but common sense would lead one to think this a rather poor place for such a large project. I know we are all busy and that the 6 p.m. time is designed to hold down turn out, but attending could make a difference. John Lemke Gallup Road, Clarkson

politically speaking Time for Sweden to have fair taxation As newcomers to the Town of Sweden just now celebrating our first anniversary, we’ve learned the awful reality of being taxpayers in what is otherwise a charming community. We just received our tax bill and are in sticker shock. But at least we know why: For three consecutive years, the current Republican government has exceeded the New York State two percent property tax cap - this past year it was nearly three times the cap - yet the Republicans voted themselves a two percent pay raise. That’s just for

starters. Our property was assessed at $42,500 above the market value. Even after appeal and adjustment, we’re still assessed at $20,000 above the market value. It’s time for fair taxation - within NYS’s tax cap - and fair assessment. This issue should have priority in the coming town election in which Democrats are fielding three candidates, Annie Crane, Mary Rich and Lori Skoog.

“Smoke, Fire, and Ashes” relives the disaster at the Morgan-Manning House 51 years ago The first program of the Western Monroe Historical Society lecture season will take place on Saturday, September 26, at the Morgan-Manning House, 151 Main Street in Brockport. “Smoke, Fire and Ashes” will review the September 26, 1964 fire that severely damaged the Morgan-Manning House exactly 51 years ago. Slides taken before and after the fire will be shown. Brockport volunteer firefighters and others will tell of their involvement at the fire. The program was produced and will be moderated by Pete Randazzo, a trustee of the Society. It is offered free by the Society, beginning at 7 p.m. and followed by refreshments. Volunteers who restored the home in 1965 organized as the Western Monroe Historical Society that year. The year 2015 is the 50th anniversary of the Society which has preserved the 1854 structure as Brockport’s landmark jewel and serving as a museum with archives for historical research, a center for community activity, and headquarters for the Society.

Participating Brockport Fire Department firemen in the presentation will be: Past Chief Norman Knapp, Past Chief Larry Vaughan, Ed Hefke, Dean Westcott, Past Lieutenant Kermit Mercer, Dick DeRuyscher, Marvin Duryea, and Charles McCullough. Other presenters include Jeff Brown, Jack Mazzarella, and Charles Garlock who is a descendant of the Morgan family. “The 50th Anniversary of the Western Monroe Historical Society has the theme ‘Out of the Ashes,’” Pete Randazzo said about the phoenix imagery that relates to the presentation. “The program will include testimony from the firemen who fought the fire and how their courageous efforts saved the building and rescued Mrs. Sara Manning who, unfortunately, died the next day. If they had not acted, the building could have been destroyed and the Western Monroe Historical Society would not have been formed.” For information phone the Society office at 637-3645. Hilton to host NYS Marching Band field competition For the first time since 1978, Hilton will host a Marching Band Field Competition on Sunday, September 20. The Hilton community has always loved its music. Three years ago, the HCSD recognized this and brought on board Matt Northausen as the newest director for its marching band. Since then, the marching band has competed in the fall competition seasons, taking an overall sixth place out

of fourteen in its division over the last two years. The last time Hilton competed in field competition prior to Matt’s direction was 1992. Gates open at 1 p.m.; the competition will begin at 2 p.m. at Hilton High School. Provided information

You may golf for relaxation, but recognize that the sport puts great demand on the body, especially the lower back. Keep in mind that the PGA golfers like Tiger Woods have been regular chiropractic patients. So here are some practices for you to keep in mind when you are on the course or preparing to go: Dr. Christopher J. Sigillo, D.C. • Buy equipment - including shoes, of course - that fit. Saving a few dollars on hand-me-down clubs that are not the right length for you is just looking for a back problem. • Warm up and stretch before and after you play, giving your trunk as much flexibility as possible. • Don’t carry your bag; pull it. Hauling a heavy bag around over one shoulder or the other is a killer on the spine. • If you’re riding in a cart, leave the cart on the path sometimes and walk to the ball. The jostling in a cart is not always good for the spine. • Every third hole or so, take a few swings with your opposite hand, just to keep your whole body involved in the game. • Whatever the sport, using the right technique is ultimately going to make you a better player and is going to lessen the likelihood of injury. So spend a few dollars and take some lessons. Get it right the first time. When you’re hitting the ball correctly, you’re going to put less strain on your back and the rest of your body. • Drink plenty of water during a round. Dehydration leads to fatigue and can affect your swing.

School of Screams volunteers needed Legend has it that right in Hamlin Town Hall, spirits reside. Are they related to the ancient Indian burial site rumored to have been nearby? Are they somehow connected to the Town Hall’s prior function as a school? Unexplained sounds, disturbances, and events have given Hamlin’s favorite event its name: The School of Screams. Every year dozens of volunteers contribute to making this event bigger and better, and this year is no exception. As usual, it will take place on the weekend prior to Halloween. This year volunteers are called upon to help build props and mechanical creatures, set up, and act in the event itself. Volunteers age eight and up can participate, however minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Anyone interested in volunteering for this year’s School of Screams can contact the Hamlin Recreation Department at 964-7222 or through email: recreation@ hamlinny.org Provided information

14 Suburban News - West Edition - September 13, 2015

6th Annual Saturday Day of Service a Success Village benefits from College at Brockport students’ efforts in local parks On Saturday, August 29, about 40 incoming freshmen worked on a hot and sunny afternoon upgrading the landscape of the Village of Brockport parks. Supervised by college faculty and Parks Committee members, the young men and women from across New York state, took shovels in hand, weeded, pushed wheelbarrows, pulled tarps with wooden mulch to spread under playground equipment, and painted picnic table tops in Corbett Park. Other completed tasks included: painting yellow parking barriers and removal of weeds at Monika Andrews Children’s Park, and painting swing set posts at Evergreen Park. Each “frosh” put in approximately two hours of community service that day before their classes began. The Saturday Day of Service is a cooperative venture between The College at Brockport and fifty organizations, agen-

cies, churches, libraries, etc. throughout the Greater Rochester area, and is mandatory for over 2,000 freshman and transfer students. Richard Harris, Coordinator of Services and Community Building, College at Brockport, coordinated the parks’ projects with Linda Ketchum, Vice-Chair of the Village of Brockport’s Parks Committee. Thanks go to Bill and Joyce Connors, Sri Ram Bakshi, Mark and Linda Ketchum for use of their yards for storing equipment, Brockport’s Department of Public Works, and Parks Committee members Losh Spalla, Joe and Barbara Blosenhauer, Sandi Henschel, Hanny Heyen, and Linda Ketchum for their contributions in helping make the 6th Saturday Day of Service a success. Provided information

The College at Brockport’s incoming freshmen painted swing set poles at Evergreen Park, as Joe Blosenhauer, village parks committee member supervises.

New patio made possible for volunteer fire fighters Whether in print or online, one look at the Suburban News or Hamlin-Clarkson Herald and you’re sure to fall in love with it. For the best in local news, events, and advertising, there is no better source.

We always, all ways, give you more.

Volunteer firefighters in the Hamlin Morton Walker district received a new outdoor patio at their fire hall thanks to local company, Mulcahy’s Landscape and Design. Owner and former volunteer fire fighter Kevin J. Mulcahy wanted to give back and say thank you to the men and women who help keep the community he grew up in safe. “These brave firefighters spend countless hours away from their home and families, volunteering their time and risking their lives to help others without being compensated,” stated Mulcahy. “Giving them a new outdoor patio where they can gather, rejuvenate, host events, and enjoy fresh air during long hours at the fire house was the least we could do.” Mulcahy organized the project that includes donations from Nicolock Paving Stones and Retaining Walls and Miller Brick. The Morton Fire Company founded in 1930, merged into the Hamlin Morton Walker Fire District in 2013, and now has over 100 volunteers dedicated to serving

their community. The fire district recently completed significant renovations as a result of a consolidation, displacing firefighters from their “home” for quite some time. Upon conclusion of renovations, they noticed something was missing that would help make their new home complete. “There wasn’t a place for members to be outside, enjoy the nice weather and be visible to the community at the same time,” stated Ken Keirn, Fire Chief of the Hamlin Morton Walker Fire District. “This patio will help increase the morale of our firefighters significantly and provides comforts of home that help make hanging at the fire station a little more enjoyable, but more importantly it will help our community. Having responders at the fire station will drastically reduce response times when someone calls 911.” The Hamlin Morton Walker Fire District will celebrate their new home with an open house during fire prevention week on October 4.
