Tournament of Roses float’s theme focuses on organ donation’s impact Three families share special life-giving bond by Kristina Gabalski Three local families will be part of the 2015 Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, California on New Year’s Day. Laurie LoMonaco of Brockport, Mary Guyette and Gates Orlando will represent the many organ donors and recipients from upstate New York while riding on or walking with the Donate Life Rose Parade float. A special send-off celebration hosted by the Finger Lakes Donor Recovery Network (FLDRN) and UR Medicine’s Solid Organ Transplant Programs was held Monday, December 8 at Strong Memorial Hospital for the three families who share a very special and remarkable bond. In January 2013, Laurie LoMonaco became a living donor, giving one of her

kidneys altruistically through the UR Medicine Transplant Program. She remembers it was difficult for her to share her decision with family and friends, but when she shared her intentions with best friends Mary and Paul Guyette, Paul was very impressed by her decision and deeply moved. “It sparked an interest in him,” Mary tells the Suburban News/The Herald. “He thought she was a hero. He was in awe of her decision.” “To Paul I was a hero,” Laurie said during the send-off celebration December 8, but noted it was Paul who “... became a bigger hero for so many.” Paul unexpectedly became that hero through a remarkable series of events. Only ten days after Laurie underwent surgery to donate her kidney, Paul was stricken with a fatal intracranial brain hemorrhage on February 3, 2013.

Laurie LoMonaco, living kidney donor, Gates Orlando, heart transplant recipient, and Mary Guyette, wife of deceased donor Paul Guyette, whose heart Gates received. His wife Mary said she was in shock and uncertain what to do when approached about donating Paul’s organs. Then she remembered how Laurie’s selfless gift had inspired Paul. He had spoken with his father about his interest in becoming an organ donor and Mary

decided to give her consent for Paul’s organs to be donated. When she returned home after her husband’s death, Mary explained to their nine and eleven year old daughters about her decision to donate Paul’s organs. “Oh my God, Mommy,” her 11-year old daughter said, “he’d be so happy.” “That was my answer,” Mary explains, “I felt at peace.” Laurie was able to visit Paul in the hospital before he died. “It was he who had been the hero all along,” she said. Paul’s liver and kidneys saved the lives of three middle-aged men. His saphenous veins were used in vascular graphs for two patients having coronary artery bypass surgery, and his corneas have restored sight for two individuals. Paul’s heart was given to Gates Orlando, a retired NHL player with the Buffalo Sabres as well as the Rochester Amerks. Gates was at Strong and had been there waiting for a heart for ten months. He had been kept alive during that time with a total artificial heart - the first person in upstate New York to receive one. Both the donor and recipient were in the same city, the same hospital, and were perfect matches. Paul was a big sports fan, including the Sabres, and Mary says the family is proud the gift of life makes it possible for Gates to live a full life and advocate for more people to join the organ donor registry.

Western Monroe Historical Society celebrates its Golden Anniversary in 2015 Fifty years preserving the Morgan-Manning House for the community by Doug Hickerson The Morgan-Manning House is the stately mansion at the corner of Brockport’s Main and South Streets. In 1964 it was damaged by a disastrous fire. Volunteers who restored the home in 1965 organized as the Western Monroe Historical Society that year. The year 2015 is the 50th anniversary of the Western Monroe Historical Society which has preserved the handsome structure as Brockport’s landmark jewel and a center of community activity. The home was built in 1854. Purchased in 1867 by Dayton S. Morgan, he willed it to his daughter, Sara Morgan Manning. It remained the Morgan homestead for almost 100 years, until the 1964 fire took the life of Sara Manning, a 96-year-old widow who was the last of the seven Morgan children. The fate of the damaged home was not immediately clear after the fire, according to WMHS historian emerita Eunice Chesnut. Competition was keen to acquire Sara Manning’s house, including two churches, the YMCA, and the College at Brockport desiring a faculty club. It was Wilbur “Doc” Hiler who saved the historic structure for posterity, fulfilling the wishes of Sara Morgan Manning stated in her will: That her home “would stand forever as a monument to the fine old traditions that are so important to our heritage.” A devoted history buff himself, Hiler approached a number of people he thought would be interested in forming a historical society to restore and preserve the firedamaged home. He requested support from the Brockport Lions Club. The club president appointed Harry Sentiff chairman of a committee to work with Hiler in establish-

ing the historical society. Sentiff was the first president of the Western Monroe Historical Society which received a provisional charter on April 23, 1965. The final charter was granted in 1968 by the University of New York Education Department Board of Regents. Hiler also worked with the Landmark Society of Western New York which determined the home was worth preserving and agreed to advise on its restoration. With the completed restoration and a board of trustees established for the Western Monroe Historical Society, the Landmark Society granted Landmark status to the home which had become the headquarters for the historical society.* For all of its austere presence on Main Street, the home and its grounds are a year-round thriving center of community activity sponsored by the Western Monroe Historical Society. The spacious treed lawn comes alive each year with The Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration and The Peddler’s Market in September. In December the house is brilliantly decorated for The Candlelight Christmas Sale, the Open House for members, and photos with Santa. Guest speakers on local history and other interests visit monthly September through April. Various local organizations hold regular meetings in the Morgan-Manning House: The Quilters, Spinners, Antiques, Gardening, Preservation and History Clubs. Supporting the local history curriculum of local schools, tours are provided for school children who learn of family life in the home and village history of the Victorian era. An extensive collection of local history records is available for research, the work of Eunice Chesnut who was the society’s historian for over 37 years and retired in September 2014. The Western Monroe Historical Society has supported

Since the new board of trustees restored the home in 1965, under President Harry Sentiff, the subsequent boards have devoted volunteer time to preservation of the home and providing educational and entertaining programs and events. Local citizens who have provided leadership as board president since Harry Sentiff are: Betty Nibbelink, Wayne Dedman, Margaret Bush, Ann Terry, Ken Dickinson, Shirley Donaher, Jeanne Redman, Connie Drdek, Jean Warner, Tom and Mary Halpin, Dorris and Frank Clune, Bob Brooks, Ara Zulalian, Anne O’Toole, Tony Zappone, Gary Skoog, George Rich, Merritt Ackles, Mary Duryea, Tom Nesbitt, Kathy Goetz, Colleen Donaldson, and Fred Porter. The current president is Alicia Fink. “The fiftieth anniversary of the Western Monroe Historical Society marks half a century of dedicated work by people from the community who believe in the historical worth of the Morgan-Manning House,” Fink said. “These community members have dedicated their time, their energy, their know-how, and their money to help restore and maintain this beautiful community jewel, an important part of the history of Brockport. We can only guess what the destiny of this beautiful house would have been without the volunteers who worked hard and invested money to organize the Western Monroe Historical Society. The subsequent volunteers who keep the House going year after year, with no financial support other than donations and fundraising activities, deserve the thanks of the community.” For other information: www.morganmanninghouse.org. *The paragraph on Doc Hiler is adapted from a WMHS July-August 1978 newsletter with an extensive eulogy upon his death July 3, 1978.

In a new series of articles, Westside News Inc. asks owners of small businesses in the readership about their experiences, how they have adapted their business plan

At Bittersweet - Eclectic mix of merchandise draws shoppers to historic building by Kristina Gabalski To say that there is a certain “vibe” when you walk into Bittersweet in downtown Brockport is an understatement. The shop, owned and operated by Darlene Trento for 34 years and housed in a landmark building at the corner of Main and Market Streets, is filled from floor to ceiling with an incredible variety of treasures. “It’s an amazing and eclectic mix of American-made and fair trade products,” Darlene says. “People really like our mix.” There is jewelry - including Trollbeads, American made pottery, wind chimes, bird houses, handwoven blankets, paintings, lighting, glasswork, giftware and seasonal items. One room is filled with natural fiber Flax and Earth Creations clothing, shoes by Naot, leather purses and accessories. Darlene says her priority is to offer American-made goods, and if they are imported, they must be fair trade. “I try very hard to put people to work,” she says. Q: How did the business get started? “I went to college here, I graduated here,” Darlene says of The College at Brockport. After graduation, she made baskets and jewelry and wanted to open a shop that would feature American crafts at their finest. Bittersweet was originally located one corner down on Main Street, Darlene says, but has been at its current location for 24 years. The shop is housed in what Darlene calls, “... a beautiful building.” The “Decker’s Block” building was constructed as a bank in 1871 and is one of the most striking in the business district. It was suffering from neglect when Darlene moved in. “It was a sleeping beauty,” Darlene says and it helped bring her business to life. Q: What about the name? Darlene explains that bittersweet vine with its bright orange berries, is an everlasting, which she finds compelling.

Darlene Trento at Bittersweet in Brockport village. K. Gabalski photo. “I love bittersweet,” she says. “I love to pick bittersweet, there are touches of bittersweet all over the store.” Though not her original intention, she explains that others have pointed out that the name also has a universal and profound symbolism: so many things in life are both bitter and sweet at the same time. Q: How does she keep the business thriving? “By keeping it fresh,” Darlene explains. I’m always moving things around ... I buy from lots of different vendors. I’m always finding new people to buy from. “Customer service is a really big part of the business,” she continues. Bittersweet has knowledgeable and helpful staff members and offers boxes and wrapping for gifts. Q: What do you enjoy most about running the shop? Darlene is obviously passionate about every facet of her business. “I like everything,” she says. “I like it all ... buying, displaying ... I like what I do.” Q: What about running a business in a college town? “I’m all about SUNY Brockport,” Darlene says. “I’m a fan of SUNY Brockport - we wouldn’t be here without it. It employs so many people.” Darlene says professors, staff, parents and students all patronize the store. Both she and her husband are proud to be graduates of the college, she says, and adds that the village is fortunate to have the school. “It keeps (the village) vivacious, it keeps us young, not stagnant,” she says. Q: Do you have any advice for people thinking about starting their own business? Darlene pauses over this question and says she wouldn’t give advice in this area, but she does say, “ ... follow your dreams ... follow your heart ... follow your passions.”

Q: How has your business grown? Darlene expanded her business efforts several years ago, opening Bittersweet’s sister store, Fast Buck Fanny’s, just across Market Street. She opened the location to appeal to college students and younger customers. Fast Buck Fanny’s is now seven years old and has a different focus. Merchandise is less expensive, Darlene explains, and features trendy clothing, hip jewelry and unique gifts. “It has a retro feel to it,” she notes. “It’s an antiqueretro kind of place. “Being in business for 34 years says a lot,” Darlene continues, and adds Bittersweet draws customers from Syracuse to Buffalo.

According to Mary Anne Fischer, Executive Director of Hospice of Orleans, “These funds will go to support the Transitions program, an in-home care program that serves seriously ill people. This largely volunteer driven, cost effective program serves the families of Orleans County and was developed to meet the special needs of those neither ready, nor eligible, for Hospice care. Saint-Gobain is the world’s largest building materials company, as well as a global leader in the production of high-performance materials and glass containers. Its manufacturing facility in Albion employs more than 200. Each year through the Saint-Gobain Corporation Foundation’s Community Gifts program, each facility across the United States is able to support the community in which it operates by targeting local needs and priorities. “We know about the important work done by Hospice and are very happy to support Hospice of Orleans with this gift,” David Fink said as

ed that the town develop long-term financial plans, policies and procedures to govern developing and monitoring the budget estimates and the amount of unexpected surplus funds to maintain; and ensure the supervisor provides all Board members with accurate and complete monthly financial reports which are to be used to monitor the town’s financial position and budget status throughout the fiscal year. The town has provided the state with a Corrective Action Plan which is already being implemented, according to officials. Taxes have been reduced in the 2015 budget for residents who live outside the Village of Spencerport from $5.70 to $5.53/$1,000. Supervisor Gay Lenhard and Paula Parker, Director of Finance, say the parttown (town outside the village or TOV) fund will have a zero levy and the highway fund has been significantly reduced in the 2015 budget. “The Board has been responsible,” says Parker. “Taxes have been very stable since 2009. The town has stayed within the tax cap since it started.” She explains that the town is working to develop a fund balance policy which includes reasons why a designated amount is necessary. The town will then stay within those amounts. “We will systematically review the policy over the next 3 to 5 years and slowly correct it in the way it was created - over time,” Parker says. “We will continue on the road to reduce taxes, reduce expenditures and use the surplus in the parttown and highway funds. The general fund needs an adequate balance for the

needs of the community.” The audit was critical of the town’s $4 million in unexpended surplus funds in the town-outside-the village (TOV) funds and town-wide drainage fund as well as $1 million in TOV reserve funds, which the state says should have been used for authorized purposes or to reduce property taxes. The audit also found the town had underestimated sales tax revenue by more than $1.8 million. Parker and Lenhard explain that under state law, there is very little flexibility in how revenues are used. Sales tax revenue must go into the TOV or highway funds, it cannot go into the general fund. Parker says the general fund (the town-wide tax base including the Village of Spencerport) must be used to fund police, the library, building maintenance, highway buildings, the court system, recreation, highway administration, the town clerk, nutrition/seniors, and park acquisition and development of land. “We can’t take from the highway or part-town (TOV) to put in the general fund because they are different tax bases,” Parker says. “We can’t use it for what we want to use it for,” Supervisor Lenhard adds regarding surpluses in the part-town and highway funds. As a result of adjustments made since the audit, Village of Spencerport taxes will be increased from $3.68 to 3.98/$1,000. Supervisor Lenhard says the town should have been watching that area more carefully. “We could have raised (taxes) more incrementally,” she says, noting

the increase is a large one. “We are continuing to smooth everything out,” Finance Director Parker says. “We will have to keep raising village taxes until it gets fair.” The town has no debt service and the audit found no instances of missing funds. Lenhard says the town’s record-keeping has made audits easier for the state. “In the end, people will see some rebates and the town will be in a good position to meet state constraints,” Parker says. She explains that the town does have some flexibility in moving funds between the part-town (TOV) and highways funds and observes that, “apportionment between the parttown (TOV) and highway funds might have been better,” in the past. Parker says the town is also working on resolutions for reserve funds that will bring them up-to-date as well as establish a more formalized plan for funding and usage of reserves. The state audit additionally found that Ogden Town Court justices failed to implement corrective action to address issues identified by the annual external audit, allowing errors to occur and remain uncorrected and resulting in the poor accountability practices continuing unabated. Both elected town justices have submitted a separate Corrective Action Plan to the state and Parker says, “... the judges are committed to working with the clerks. There are now fail-safes in place ... (the clerks) understand what the state wants them to do.”

To help support the local agriculture industry and to provide producers with expert information, Genesee County Cornell Cooperative Extension offers its annual “Agriculture Enrollment.” Farms enrolled in 2015 will receive direct access to crop, dairy and livestock specialists backed up by Cornell researchers. The Cornell Vegetable Team provides up-to-date information on vegetable production and storage, integrated pest management, food safety, soil health and market development. The team’s vegetable specialists work together with Cornell faculty and extension educators statewide to address

the issues that impact the industry. The Cornell Vegetable Program is working hard in our region to address the concerns of our growers. The North West New York Dairy, Livestock and Field Crops Team provide service to farms large and small whether dairy, livestock, hay, corn, wheat or soybean focused. The team is directly affiliated with Cornell University’s Department of Animal Science and Pro-Dairy program. Specialists cover the areas of dairy production, field crop production, farm business management, small farm management and livestock production. For dairy

farms, a bilingual dairy specialist provides producers with employee training and human resource facilitation in Spanish. Both teams provide educational programs with classroom and hands-on training, farmer discussion groups, newsletters with timely production information, as well as farm visits and research opportunities. Cost of enrollment is $65 per team. Cornell Pest Management Guidelines are available for an additional cost. To receive an enrollment form contact Jan Beglinger at 585-343-3040 ext. 132 or at jmb374@cornell.edu. Provided information

Efforts of many show in Lights Parade Sunday, December 7 marked the 4th annual Holiday Lights Spectacular Parade with another terrific crowd from the greater Brockport community cheering on the 30 parade entrants. It’s always a village effort, from the Stetson Club that coordinates the parade, to Rachael Blair, the lineup organizer, to the fire police who keep the parade moving and the cars off the parade street. Again this year, Brockport’s DPW handled the preliminaries, lighting the downtown trees and the Christmas tree, hanging holiday

banners and putting up barricades. At the parade’s finish Liz Banner’s Brockport high school chorus sang carols in Sagawa Park near the Christmas tree, which was donated this year by Mr. and Mrs. Robert Carey. Thanks to all who made the December 7 parade a memorable start to our holiday season. Margay Blackman Mayor of Brockport

Dr. Christopher J. Sigillo, D.C.

Even if your personal history has not included any rigorous physical activity or the trauma of a fall or a serious accident, your spine is subject to the inevitable process of aging and deterioration. Since the nerves that control all your body parts pass through the spine, it’s a fact that maintaining a healthy spine is important for your overall health.

Forces other than jarring impact can affect the spine. Stress, for instance, whether it’s brought on by physical, chemical or emotional factors, can tighten muscles and pull bones, including those of the spine - the vertebrae - out of line. Where muscles lead, bones follow.

Daily

Chiropractic has been show to be effective in alleviating the effects of stress. Especially susceptible to damage over the course of a lifetime are the discs that are the cushions, the shock absorbers, between those vertebrae. The discs have a tough exterior and a gelatinous interior that allows them to expand and contract according to pressure. They can wear down and herniate - meaning the gelatinous interior pushes through a rupture in the exterior shell. This can cause discomfort not only in the back but in the body part controlled by the nerve that passes through the damaged area.

Fresh Baked BaGels

Regular chiropractic treatment, including the spinal manipulation that can keep the vertebrae aligned, can mitigate the effects of aging. Just as you regularly visit your dentist and physician, you should see a chiropractor to keep your spine healthy.

death notices

A Special

Brockport

The Spencerport Community truly lived up to its slogan “Spencerport Someplace Special” during the week of November 2 when my three brothers, Jim, Mike, Tom, and I suffered the loss of our mother, Joyce. We were overwhelmed with love, support, respect and unity while honoring Joyce and supporting us. Joyce wore many hats - she was first and foremost a Mom, Grandmother/Nana, Spencerport Mayor, Friend, Realtor, Sister, Aunt, Wife and a member of many community organizations within the village and school system. She wore each hat with great dignity and pride but for us the best hat ever was that of a “Mother.” Thank you to everyone for your outpouring of support and caring for our family during this very difficult time in our lives. We will continue to keep Joyce alive and in our hearts as she is everywhere in the village, from Our Hometown Hero banners to the smallest plant she had planted. Sincerely, The Lobene Family

sports/recreation

Blue Devils’ Olson sets pool record by Warren Kozireski Senior co-captain Nick Olson set a new pool record by swimming the 200-yard individual medley in 2:00.40 and won the 100-yard breaststroke in

1:03.19, but host Brockport fell to Fairport 104-81 in boys swimming. Junior co-captain Nate Bartalo took first place in two individual events - the 50-yard freestyle in :23.10 and the 100-yard butterfly in :55.61. Brockport’s Anthony Guerrieri won the diving competition with 176.50 points and the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Bruce Kane, Bartalo, Brandon Amthor and Olson won with a time of 1:31.55. Amthor also had a pair of second place finishes in the 200 and 500 freestyle events.

Saints win nine swimming events in loss to York by Warren Kozireski Senior captain Kyle Podlaski, freshman Brandon Crist and sophomore Christian Montanez each won two individual events and Churchville-Chili won nine in all, but York used their team depth to defeat the Saints 99-83 in the boys swimming home opener. Podlaski won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:10.72 and the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:10.78. Crist won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:59.59 and, just four events later, the 100-yard backstroke in 1:01.85. Montanez took top honors in the sprints taking the 50-yard freestyle in :23.72 and the 100-yard freestyle in :52.86. The 200-yard medley relay team of Crist, Podlaski, Kyle Wooding and Montanez opened the meet winning with a time of 1:49.78. The same group also won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:39.55 - more than 20 seconds ahead of second place. Wooding, a sophomore, was the other Saints individual winner handily taking the 100-yard butterfly in :57.75. The Saints field a squad of only 13 swimmers with five freshmen and three sophomores.

Hilton hands Irondequoit first loss by Warren Kozireski John Rutherford pounded in his first goal of the season and fifth in his career on a rebound with just five seconds remaining in the second period to break a 3-3 tie and give Hilton a 5-3 victory over Irondequoit in high school hockey. The Cadets opened up a 1-0 lead when Todd Higgins won an offensive zone faceoff back to the right point. Hunter Howell wristed it into the net to give Hilton a 1-0 lead at 4:37 of the first period. Irondequoit’s Anthony Thurston scored twice within 43 seconds to stake the Eagles to a 2-1 lead, but Hilton tied the game on a power play goal as Higgins tipped a Howell shot past the goaltender at 9:10 of the first period. Hard work late in the first got the Cadets the lead back as Brenden Howell dug the puck out from multiple legs behind the Irondequoit net and squeezed a shot inside the

post and the goalie’s leg pad. Jake Coon assisted at 9:54 of the first and Hilton had a 3-2 lead after 15 minutes. The Eagles again tied the contest six minutes into the second period on a redirection, but Rutherford pounced on the rebound from a Spencer Norris shot from the right corner to put the Cadets ahead for good. Justin Allen added an insurance goal with his teamleading third of the season at 11:53 of the third period as his wrist shot off a pass from Jake Palumbo sailed just inside the right post at 11:53. “This was a typical Hilton-Irondequoit game,” Cadets head coach Chris Monfiletto said. “It was fast-paced and tough and we’re lucky to come out on top.” The game marked the second time this season the Cadets have allowed a one or two goal lead to evaporate. “I’m happy we were able to respond and find another gear, but if we’re going to be successful moving forward, we can’t continue to do that.” Goaltender Patrick Dennehy made 22 saves on 25 shots in the win. Hilton concludes the 2014 portion of the schedule with four away contests followed by five in a row on home ice (Lakeshore) to begin the New Year.
