Brockport Village Hall makes its move by Kristina Gabalski Village of Brockport offices were closed January 9 to 11 to facilitate a move from 49 State Street to 127 Main Street. On October 30, the village purchased the new location from Lifetime Assistance for $250,000. Village Mayor Margay Blackman said the move will help ease overcrowding at 49 State Street where the village hall has shared space with the village court for three years.

“The court size has significantly increased,” Blackman said during the November 6 meeting of the Village Board. “It has been difficult sharing this space.” Blackman said people with court appearances sometimes have to wait lined-up outside on the sidewalk. The move of the village offices is expected to open up space in the former codes office at 49 State Street, allowing people to wait and meet with the public defender while court is in session. The court will remain at 49 State Street and all Village Board, Zoning Board, and Planning Board meetings and workshops will continue to be held there. Smaller committee meetings will take place in the conference room of the new location, Blackman said. “The village will host an open house at the new village hall for the community sometime in February,” she said, and added that she is excited about the move. “The interior upgrade with painting, window treatments and carpets will really look nice.”

Village office staff say the move will help consolidate office materials and records and offer extra storage space. Materials which have been stored at the police department will now be housed here, they say. K. Gabalski photo.
Annual Hilton-Parma Recreation Winter Fest Day of Play planned by Kristina Gabalski Hilton-Parma Recreation will celebrate all things fun about winter during the annual Winter Fest on Saturday, January 27 from noon to 2:30 p.m. at the Village of Hilton Community Center, 59 Henry Street. The event gives families a chance to take a break from the challenges of winter living and enjoy a “Day of Play.” “Bundle up and bring the family out,” says Tom Venniro, Town of Parma Parks and Recreation Director. He says the event will be filled with both indoor and outdoor activities. “Indoor activities will include free hot dogs, chili, hot chocolate and S’mores cupcakes from Rachel B’s,” Venniro says. Also featured inside will be the popular Mascot Madness with local sports team mascots, crafts and family game tables. Additionally, Gaga, music and more will be available inside. Venniro says if there is snow, “Come ready to enjoy outdoor activities such as snow shoeing, snow games, sledding and more.” “Activities are free for all, but we ask that you preregister so that we know how many people to expect,” Venniro adds. To register, visit the Parks and Recreation page on the Town of Parma website: parmany.org and click on the link to Registration for Winter/Spring Programs.

Hawley joins NY lawmakers, calling for funding for Lake Ontario flood victims Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C,I-Batavia) personally hand-delivered a letter to Governor Andrew Cuomo, signed by nine other state legislators who represent districts along Lake Ontario’s southern shore, requesting an increase in funding for each not-for-profit housing organization to be able to meet the needs of all pending homeowner applications. “Although this program (the Lake Ontario Relief and Recovery Program) provided vital assistance to individual homeowners, businesses and municipalities, the $15 million that was intended to reimburse homeowners has already been depleted,” Hawley wrote. Hawley, who was one of the first elected officials to tour
flooding along the shoreline firsthand, was instrumental in securing funding for this program during last year’s session and has written to Cuomo, urging him to petition President Trump to renegotiate Plan 2014. “It is clear to us that although $15 million was a good start to help reimburse homeowners, unfortunately, it did not even scratch the surface,” Hawley continued in the letter. “We respectfully request full disclosure from NYS Homes and Community Renewal detailing the number of outstanding applications and the exact amount of funding needed for reimbursement. This funding should be part of this year’s budget.” Provided information
GCC announces Historical Horizons Spring 2018 lecture series The Genesee Community College History Club has released its spring Historical Horizons Lecture Series line up. The series provides the community with access to renowned authors and historians as they take a deep look at the events and movements that have shaped our nation’s history. “The spring series line up will provide very unique perspectives on bloody battles and war, the Trail of Tears, and immigration,” says GCC’s Associate Professor Derek Maxfield. “This series is sure to inform and even entertain.” •Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at 7 p.m. / Medina Campus/ Maple Ridge Rd, Medina - Author Kevin R. Pawlak will discuss his book “Shepherdstown in the Civil War: One Vast Confederate Hospital.” During the Civil War the small town of Shepherds-town, West Virginia was suddenly flooded with Confederate soldiers wounded in battle. Homes and churches transformed into triage centers and in all, the town, into “one vast hospital.” •Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at 7 p.m. / Batavia Campus/ Room T102 - Kevin R. Pawlak will join us again to present “The Jewels of War: Robert E. Lee, George B. McClellan, and the Battle of Antietam.” Pawlak is also the director of education for the Mosby Heritage Area Association in Virginia. The Battle of Antietam is America’s Bloodiest single day. In totality, twelve hours of fighting on Wednesday, September 17, 1862 left approximately 23,000 casualties. During this lecture, Pawlak will assess the dramatic events of the battle from the unique perspective of the commanders on the field. •Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at 7 p.m. / Batavia Campus/ Room T102 - GCC adjunct professor Danny Hamner will present “The Removal Crisis of 1832: How Nationalism, Po-
litical Ambition and the Electoral College Shaped the Trail of Tears.” Often, the “Trail of Tears” is remembered as the inevitable tragedy of an indigenous people swept aside by the rising forces of modern America. While there certainly were large historical forces transforming America in the early 19th century, the removal crises of the period were ultimately shaped by the personalities, politics and needs of the movement. The mix of personal ambitions and zealous nationalism linked the destiny of the Cherokee Nation to Henry Clay’s presidential aspirations with catastrophic but not inevitable results. •Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at 7 p.m. / Batavia Campus/ Room T102 (Rescheduled from 12/6/17) - Orleans County Historian Matthew R. Ballard, MLS will present “Fear of the Unknown: Creating the Illegal Immigrant in 19th Century America.” Immigration to the United States is a relative topic in current events; however, the establishment of the “illegal immigrant” only dates back to the turn of the 20th century. In the earliest years of immigration, Europeans were accepted without restriction, but an influx of new immigrants during the latter half of the 19th century raised concerns about political impacts on American society. Uncertainty and unfounded fears created excessive restrictions focused on limiting access to specific ethnic/ racial groups, religious groups, the disabled, the infirmed and those likely to become a “public charge.” All lectures are free and open to the public. A Renaissance for Greece Performing Arts In December 2016, the Greece Performing Arts Society (GPAS) appointed Eric Vaughn Johnson as the new President to bring new ideas, programs and partnerships to the organization. Over the last year, the 300-person performing membership has blossomed in an artistic and financial renaissance. GPAS’s 2017 schedule included many new opportunities: The Next Chapter Media Event and Concert, the first annual Summer Soiree, the re-opening of the Greece Theatre Company with the upstate New York premiere of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” and most recently the resurrected Young Artists Competition. Additionally, in 2017 the non-profit performing arts organization continued its on-going concerts throughout Greece and the greater Rochester area. GPAS was represented at downtown events including Corn Hill Arts Festival, M&T Clothesline Festival at the Memorial Art Gallery and the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival, as well as at several Rochester Red Wings games. The on-going GPAS Holiday Wrapping Booth fundraiser at the Mall at Greece Ridge made the largest profit since its inception in the past 20 years. However, Johnson is not stopping here and he has several new plans for 2018. Young Artists Recital First up, the GPAS will be kicking off 2018 with the Young Artists Recital on Sunday, January 14 at 2 p.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church in Greece, located at 2400 W. Ridge Road (14626). Tickets for the recital are $10 and available online at GreecePerformingArts.org or at the door. Featuring winners from the December 2017 competition, the recital will feature some of Rochester’s finest up and coming performers. The musical theatre, classical voice and instrumental performers range in ages from seven to 17 and include Sierra Bianchi of Hilton, Gregory Sekeres of Rochester, Julianna Tracey of Greece, J. Ian Reynolds of Greece, Mary Olivia Long of Brighton and Angela Gagnon of Greece. GPAS Spring Concert In March, GPAS will be grooving to a whole new beat with Good Vibrations Concert: Hits of the 1960s. The new themed-concert will highlight the Greece Jazz Band, directed by Gary J. Samulski, and the Greece Concert Band, directed by BJ Comer. Guest professional soloists include
Jenna Owens, Alvis Green Jr. and Dylan DeGeorge, who recently played Quasimodo in GPAS’s production of “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” Audience members will recognize popular hits from the Beach Boys, the Beatles, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, the Supremes and more. The concert will be held Saturday, March 24 at 7 p.m. at Greece Arcadia High School Auditorium, 120 Island Cottage Road (14612). Tickets are $12 and available online at GreecePerformingArts.org or at the door.
Eric Vaughn Johnson, President of the GPAS.

You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for mercy toward me and mine (The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. This prayer must be published and the favor will be granted). A.M.
GPAS Summer Soiree On Saturday, June 2, the GPAS Summer Soiree will be held once again at Davinci’s of Greece with a 1930s Hooray for Hollywood theme. The new annual fundraiser will include a full buffet dinner, professional musical talent, a silent auction, and more. GPAS in the future According to Eric Vaughn Johnson, the GPAS is currently developing the second Greece Theatre Company production to be mounted in late 2018. “We are not ready to announce any information, however the next show promises to be another big one like last fall’s ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame.’ ” “GPAS will be rolling out a larger expanded version of the Young Artists Competition for December 2018. And then, in 2019 the GPAS will plan a year-long celebration for our 50th Anniversary,” reported Johnson. “We have a lot of additional plans and partnerships currently in the works, so the future for GPAS looks good.” For more information on the Next Chapter of GPAS, visit www.GreecePerformingArts.org, email info@GreecePerformingArts.org or call 234-5636. NYAA named Business of the Year by NYS Agricultural Society New York Apple Association (NYAA) has been named Business of the Year by the New York State Agricultural Society (NYSAS). The award is presented annually in recognition of quality, leadership and innovation in production agriculture and agribusiness in New York state. NYAA received the award at a ceremony held Thursday, January 4 in Syracuse. “The New York Apple Association is pleased and honored to receive this notable acknowledgment,” said NYAA President & CEO Cynthia Haskins. “To be recognized by the New York State Agricultural Society is one of our Association’s finest highlights and we are proud with gratitude.” NYAA represents New York’s 700 apple growers and its mission is to promote the state’s apple industry and its prominent place as the second largest apple producing state in the nation. “This award recognizes all qualities New York growers, board members and professional staff demonstrate daily in their commitment to promoting New York apples,” said NYAA Board Chairman Jason Woodworth of Lamont Fruit Farm, Inc.
NYAA works closely with retailers across the country to promote New York apples, ciders and sauces, offering advertisements, custom promotions and exclusive online content. The association also markets directly to consumers using television, radio, billboards and social media to communicate the distinctive flavor of all New York varieties. Similarly, NYAA’s website – www. nyapplecountry.com -- promotes New York farm markets, cideries and ‘you-pick’ operations where New York apples are grown and sold. NYAA also links local apple suppliers to schools and foodservice. The Business of the Year Award was first awarded in 2001 to Wegman’s Food Markets. Agribusinesses recognized with the award through the years include: Canandaigua Wine, O-At-Ka Dairy Cooperative, Stewart’s Shops, Dairylea Cooperative, Inc. Marshman Farms, I.L. Richer Company, Inc., Nelson Farms at Morrisville State College, Carolina Eastern-Vail, Inc., Cayuga Marketing, Hudson Valley Fresh, Eden Valley Growers, Inc., Chobani, Farm Credit East and Upstate Niagara Cooperative, Inc. Girl Scouts of Western New York begin 2018 cookie season Girl Scouts of Western New York (GSWNY) enters the next century of Girl Scouts selling cookies. The Girl Scout Cookie Program not only teaches girls essential entrepreneurial skills, but also powers amazing experiences for them across the United States. After last year’s 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts selling cookies, troops in Western New York are kicking off this season with the return of Girl Scout S’mores, the most popular flavor to launch in the 101 years of Girl Scouts selling cookies. Consumers can now help fuel transformative leadership experiences and build the next generation of entrepreneurs in Western New York by purchasing Girl Scout S’mores and classic favorites like Thin Mints and Caramel deLites. During Girl Scout cookie season, each G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader) sets out to sell delicious cookies while also building entrepreneurial and
business skills that are imperative for leadership and future success. Almost onemillion Girl Scouts participate in the cookie program each year, generating nearly $800 million in sales during the average season. And all of the net revenue raised by GSWNY - 100 percent of it - stays within the Western New York area. Councils use cookie earnings to power amazing experiences for girls through their programming, while girls and their troops decide how to invest in impactful community projects, personal enrichment opportunities and more. All across GSWNY’s nine county region, Girl Scouts are doing amazing things made possible by each and every cookie sale. Whether it’s a trip out-of-state, a service project to help the homeless, improve literacy for children or comfort animals in a shelter, Girl Scout cookies help make it all happen. However, girls’ cookie earnings
alone aren’t enough to power the Girl Scout Movement - investing in girls is important year-round, not just during cookie season. “Girl Scout cookies are the best cookies in the world, but beyond the delicious flavor, the Girl Scout Cookie program offers girls an opportunity to do extraordinary things,” said Judith Cranston, CEO of Girl Scouts of Western New York. “As the largest entrepreneurial program for girls in the world, the Girl Scout Cookie Program is powering the next century of girl entrepreneurs toward greatness and adult volunteers.” This year, girls will sell cookies door-todoor and at booth sales, as well as through the Digital Cookie platform, an innovative and educational web-based addition to the cookie program that helps girls run and manage their Girl Scout cookie businesses online. Now in its fourth year, the Digital Cookie platform continues to bring Girl Scout programming into the future by
providing girls with invaluable business and science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) skills that prepare them for 21st century leadership. Girl Scouts of Western New York will also celebrate the next century of female entrepreneurs during National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend 2018. From February 23 to 25, Girl Scout councils across the country will host events and set up booths for cookie enthusiasts to get their hands on the iconic treats and join in on the fun. To find out when Girl Scouts are selling cookies near you, visit www.girlscoutcookies.org or use the official Girl Scout Cookie Finder app, free on iOS and Android devices. Volunteers are needed and adults and girls can still join Girl Scouts by going to www.gswny.org. Provided information

Hill paces Cadets win by Warren Kozireski Hilton never trailed, though visiting Victor closed to within three or fewer points of the lead on five occasions in the second half, in a 73-63 boy’s basketball win to even their record at 5-5. Sophomore Tah-jae Hill scored 17 of his game-high 31 points in the first half as the Cadets led by as many as 12. Hilton’s offense stalled a bit in the third quarter with only six field goals and a free throw to allow the Blue Devils to close to within three points of the lead three times and two points once. But Hill hit on a pair of drives and had a steal to go with a lay-up and pair of free throws by junior Mitchell Carr to build the lead back to six. The Cadets managed just one basket over the final 100 seconds, but went four-of-seven from the free throw line while limiting Victor to one trey down the stretch to secure the win. Hill added four steals and four rebounds to his 31 points while senior Joe Lipani had 12 points with four rebounds. Junior guard Noah Malta dished out nine assists with 12 points and Carr also scored in double-figures with 11 points plus four rebounds and three steals.

Golden Eagles split in men’s basketball; Dunne sets school all-time wins mark by Warren Kozireski The College at Brockport broke a 34-34 tie with a 13-3 run to end the first half and led by as many as 26 points on their way to a 90-75 victory over Buffalo State to mark men’s basketball head coach Greg Dunne’s 181st career win, setting a new school record previously held by Curtis Gaylord (1947-48 through 1963-64). He earlier in December moved past Nelson Whitmore (176 wins) into second place. The Golden Eagles put the game out of reach as they tacked on a 16-2 run to begin the second half as Justin Summers hit nine points and Hamed Shamseldin scored on consecutive drives. “Coach got on us honestly and told us to be more smart and have a better IQ defensively and that was our main focus coming out in the second half,” Summers said. “In
Dambra’s combine for three wins for Blue Devils by Warren Kozireski Matt Dambra finished first in two individual events while Nick Dambra won once while both were part of a winning relay team as Brockport defeated Brighton 94-92 in boy’s swimming. man (defense) they got by us and we had some stupid fouls, but we switched up and they had trouble with the two-three zone.” Summers led the Golden Eagles with 16 points and seven rebounds while Michael O’Hara had 15 to go with seven rebounds. Shamseldin and Jon Carnegie each added ten points with the former leading with six assists and the latter also tying with a team-best seven rebounds. Brockport improved to 5-1 in SUNYAC play and tied with Plattsburgh for second place behind only 6-0 Cortland, who they host January 26. “It sounds like coach-speak, but really I’ve had great players and good mentors like Nelson Whitmore, who kind of started this thing and even before him Bill Bowe,” Dunne said about his new record. “It’s a big honor because from Bowe to (Mauro) Panaggio to (Bill) Van Gundy there have been a lot of big-time basketball names who have been here and it’s a nice honor.” Earlier the women’s team dropped a heartbreaker to the Bengals on a three-point shot with 40 seconds remaining after they led by as many as 16 points in the first half. The Golden Eagles were held to only three second half field goals, but were 13-of-19 from the free throw line over the final two stanzas. Emily Nester led Brockport with 15 points while Lindsay Johnson had a double-double with ten points and 13 rebounds. Schyler Laux added ten points for the 3-8, 1-4 Golden Eagles.
