Brockport Village Hall makes its move by Kristina Gabalski Village of Brockport offices were closed January 9 to 11 to facilitate a move from 49 State Street to 127 Main Street. On October 30, the village purchased the new location from Lifetime Assistance for $250,000. Village Mayor Margay Blackman said the move will help ease overcrowding at 49 State Street where the village hall has shared space with the village court for three years.
A moving company employee removes a filing cabinet and boxes from the former Brockport Village Hall at 49 State Street Wednesday morning, January 10. The village offices moved to a new location at 127 Main Street to make more room for the village court. K. Gabalski photo.
“The court size has significantly increased,” Blackman said during the November 6 meeting of the Village Board. “It has been difficult sharing this space.” Blackman said people with court appearances sometimes have to wait lined-up outside on the sidewalk. The move of the village offices is expected to open up space in the former codes office at 49 State Street, allowing people to wait and meet with the public defender while court is in session. The court will remain at 49 State Street and all Village Board, Zoning Board, and Planning Board meetings and workshops will continue to be held there. Smaller committee meetings will take place in the conference room of the new location, Blackman said. “The village will host an open house at the new village hall for the community sometime in February,” she said, and added that she is excited about the move. “The interior upgrade with painting, window treatments and carpets will really look nice.”

Village office staff say the move will help consolidate office materials and records and offer extra storage space. Materials which have been stored at the police department will now be housed here, they say. K. Gabalski photo.
Annual Hilton-Parma Recreation Winter Fest Day of Play planned by Kristina Gabalski Hilton-Parma Recreation will celebrate all things fun about winter during the annual Winter Fest on Saturday, January 27 from noon to 2:30 p.m. at the Village of Hilton Community Center, 59 Henry Street. The event gives families a chance to take a break from the challenges of winter living and enjoy a “Day of Play.” “Bundle up and bring the family out,” says Tom Venniro, Town of Parma Parks and Recreation Director. He says the event will be filled with both indoor and outdoor activities. “Indoor activities will include free hot dogs, chili, hot chocolate and S’mores cupcakes from Rachel B’s,” Venniro says. Also featured inside will be the popular Mascot Madness with local sports team mascots, crafts and family game tables. Additionally, Gaga, music and more will be available inside. Venniro says if there is snow, “Come ready to enjoy outdoor activities such as snow shoeing, snow games, sledding and more.” “Activities are free for all, but we ask that you preregister so that we know how many people to expect,” Venniro adds. To register, visit the Parks and Recreation page on the Town of Parma website: parmany.org and click on the link to Registration for Winter/Spring Programs.

The series provides the community with access to renowned authors and historians as they take a deep look at the events and movements that have shaped our nation’s history. “The spring series line up will provide very unique perspectives on bloody battles and war, the Trail of Tears, and immigration,” says GCC’s Associate Professor Derek Maxfield. “This series is sure to inform and even entertain.” •Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at 7 p.m. / Medina Campus/ Maple Ridge Rd, Medina - Author Kevin R. Sweden Town Supervisor holds second re-zoning public hearing The Sweden Town Board will hold a second public hearing regarding a proposal to re-zone property at the northwest corner of Redman and Fourth Section Roads from Single Family Residence to Multiple Residence. The Public Hearing will be held Tuesday, February 13 at 7 p.m. at the Sweden Town Hall. The first Public Hearing was held on July 25, 2017. I attended as a private citizen, as did new Town Board Member Patricia Hayles. However, we feel it is important for us to participate in a public hearing as your elected officials who will be making the rezoning determination in 2018 (the previous Town Board did not act to grant or deny the application before the end of 2017). We also heard your concerns that not enough time was given between the date the public hearing was set and the date it was held. Although the town did follow the legal time and notification requirements, we understand that our citizens want a little more time and a little more notice to prepare. On January 2, we set the new hearing date for February 13, a full six weeks ahead.

I am also increasing the methods by which we notify the public. The town clerk will still post the legal notice in our official newspaper, the Suburban News, and on our website at www.townofsweden.org. She will continue to mail the courtesy notifications to property owners within 500 feet. I am sending this news release to various outlets and posting it on my new Town of Sweden Supervisor Facebook page. Finally, I am proposing some changes to the rules and procedures of the Sweden Town Board to make permanent the longer time between setting public hearing dates and holding them; and requiring a quicker mailing of notifications to residents. I expect the board will adopt those changes in the near future. We hope to see residents at the February 13 public hearing to have a meaningful discussion about this rezoning proposal. Kevin G. Johnson, Sweden Town Supervisor

Garden Talk series kicks off in February Join the Genesee County Master Gardeners on February 6 for its first Garden Talk of the year, “A Photo Garden Tour of Chanticleer Gardens.” Get rid of the winter blues with a look at Chanticleer’s spectacular gardens, described as “America’s most inspiring garden.” Located outside of Philadelphia, Chanticleer is a colorful, contemporary garden within an historic setting. Adolph Rosengarten Jr. bequeathed the family estate for the enjoyment and education of the public following his death in 1990. The garden opened to the public in 1993 and has since been a magical place to visit. Future topics include: a program on creating cutting gardens on March 6; a demonstration on how to make your
own corsages on April 3; tips for growing great canna lilies on May 1; and on June 5 a program about a new invasive pest that has been showing up locally - jumping worms. All Garden Talk programs run from 12:15 to 12:45 pm. Bring your lunch to the CCE office (420 East Main Street, Batavia) and join the Genesee County Master Gardeners for this free series. Registration is not required. Future topics and other Master Gardener events will be posted on the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Genesee County website at http://genesee.cce.cornell.edu/ and also on its Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/CCEofGenesee. Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories, The Little Mermaid Jr. is an enchanting look at the sacrifices we all make for love and acceptance.
In a magical underwater kingdom, the beautiful young mermaid, Ariel, longs to leave her ocean home – and her fins – behind and live in the world above. But first, she’ll have to defy her father, King Triton, make a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, and convince the handsome Prince Eric that she’s the girl whose enchanting voice he’s been seeking. Tickets are $6 each or four for $20 and can be purchased at the Oliver Middle School Main Office or reserved online at oms.bcs1.org, under “Families.” Provided information

At the Jr./Sr. High School, after an exciting battle of wits and global knowledge, Matthew Tanner was declared the Byron-Bergen Geographic Bee champion. He was given a medal and awarded a $30 Amazon gift card. Runner-up Nicholas Zwerka received a $20 Amazon gift card. At the Elementary School, the title of Geographic Bee champion was awarded to fifth-grader Jack Farner who edged out fellow fifth-grader Jackson Lundfelt for the honor. Participants from both schools qualified for the bee by achieving high scores on a test taken in December. Both winners will now take another written test, which will be submitted to the National Geographic Society. If their scores are among the highest in New York State, they may be invited to participate in the state competition. State winners go on to the televised national bee held in May in Washington, DC. Hill paces Cadets win by Warren Kozireski Hilton never trailed, though visiting Victor closed to within three or fewer points of the lead on five occasions in the second half, in a 73-63 boy’s basketball win to even their record at 5-5. Sophomore Tah-jae Hill scored 17 of his game-high 31 points in the first half as the Cadets led by as many as 12. Hilton’s offense stalled a bit in the third quarter with only six field goals and a free throw to allow the Blue Devils to close to within three points of the lead three times and two points once. But Hill hit on a pair of drives and had a steal to go with a lay-up and pair of free throws by junior Mitchell Carr to build the lead back to six. The Cadets managed just one basket over the final 100 seconds, but went four-of-seven from the free throw line while limiting Victor to one trey down the stretch to secure the win. Hill added four steals and four rebounds to his 31 points while senior Joe Lipani had 12 points with four rebounds. Junior guard Noah Malta dished out nine assists with 12 points and Carr also scored in double-figures with 11 points plus four rebounds and three steals.

Golden Eagles split in men’s basketball; Dunne sets school all-time wins mark by Warren Kozireski The College at Brockport broke a 34-34 tie with a 13-3 run to end the first half and led by as many as 26 points on their way to a 90-75 victory over Buffalo State to mark men’s basketball head coach Greg Dunne’s 181st career win, setting a new school record previously held by Curtis Gaylord (1947-48 through 1963-64). He earlier in December moved past Nelson Whitmore (176 wins) into second place.
