For Spencerport native, “the office” is Yankee Stadium by Kristina Gabalski Despite up and down play, the New York Yankees are having a winning season so far in 2015, and Aaron Patella Ryan continues to enjoy his work as bat boy for the team. This is the Spencerport native’s third season in the job, and Aaron says he continues to be grateful and feels fortunate that for him, going to “the office” means heading to Yankee Stadium. “I have the best boss I will ever have and my co-workers are awesome. I’m happy to be with them,” he says of the Yankees organization. “I’ve had the opportunity to meet a lot of cool people .... stars and movie stars. As a life-long Yankees fan, I never thought I would be here.” Alex Rodriguez, who sat out the entire 2014 season after being suspended for using performance enhancing drugs, is back in the line-up this year. A-Rod has not been a fan favorite, but his performance so far this season is helping to bring fans around, and Aaron says he has been amazed at A-Rod’s knowledge of the game. “A-Rod is the smartest person I’ve ever listened to talk about baseball,” Aaron says. “He knows things that would blow you away. I hear him in the dugout talking to and coaching other players and think, ‘wow, I’ve never picked up on what he’s talking about.’” Aaron describes a game in early May when A-Rod hit home run number 661, surpassing Willie Mays for fourth place on the all-time home run list. After the home run, Aaron had retrieved the bat for the major league authenticator (since 2001 MLB has used an authentication program to ensure the legitimacy of game-used memorabilia), who realized A-Rod might want to continue to use the bat during the rest of the game. “Baseball players are superstitious,” Aaron says. “He hit the home run during his second at-bat of the game. In his first at-bat, he technically hit a home run, but was robbed at the wall.” An outfielder had reached over the wall to catch A-Rod’s first-up hit, Aaron explains. Baseball players don’t like to stop using a bat if it is bringing them luck, he says.
Coming Next Week!
Top left, Alex Rodriguez and Aaron check out the bat A-Rod used when he hit homerun #661 to pass Willie Mays for fourth all-time spot on the homerun record list. Right, Aaron with Paul O’Neill and Tino Martinez at “Old Timers Day” last year. Bottom left, Derek Jeter gives Aaron a pre-game dap before he took the field for his final home game last season. “I brought the bat to him and told him the authenticator thought he might like to keep using it,” Aaron says. A-Rod then spent several moments, “... standing, feeling the bat, looking at it and checking it out. He was struggling to make up his mind. He decided to put it in his locker.” Aaron also got to see Derek Jeter the first time he retuned to the stadium on May 24 for the retirement of teammate Bernie Williams’ number 51. “He went around the clubhouse,” Aaron says of Jeter, who retired at the end of last season. “He was smiling when he came up to me. He shook my hand, it was so cool to see him again.” Aaron also remembers Jeter’s magical last at-bat at Yankee Stadium last September 25, when he hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 9th inning to win the game, 6-5 over the Orioles.
Aaron says he was not surprised by the game winning hit because Jeter had always been a clutch moment player. “I was standing with (first baseman) Mark Teixeira to my right and the ball boy on the other side and I remember saying to myself he was going to do it,” Aaron says. “He had done it his entire career and there was no other way to end his career.” Aaron says it was amazing to be a part of the moment following the hit. “We were jumping up and down and high-fiving. Everyone was going crazy.” Additionally, Aaron was able to travel with the team to Boston for Jeter’s final series and game. “My boss took me to Boston, it was a pretty cool experience,” Aaron says. “I do love this job,” he adds. “It’s hard to swallow I might not be doing this next

year.” (Aaron has to apply each year for the bat boy job). He especially loves seeing the camaraderie between the players - the way they interact after a big win, or when they give everyone a fist-dap (fist-pound) before the game. “It’s fun being around the players,” he says. Editor’s note: Aaron Patella Ryan is a 2008 graduate of McQuaid Jesuit High School and a 2012 Iona College graduate. He is the son of Westside News Inc. owner Keith Ryan and his wife, Francine, and the brother of Kiri Patella Ryan of Spencerport. When the team is on the road and in the off season, Aaron is employed by Enterprise Rent-A-Car.

Ad production manager
It’s been an honor and a privilege to work as the editor of this grassroots community publication. Looking back over three decades of local issues, events and projects provides not only a trip down memory lane but also brings the profound realization that we get by with (a lot of) help from our friends. A job that started as very part-time as a means to help pay for dental braces for two children who are now in their 40s and have their own gold standard health insurance (and straightened teeth), became full-time with the addition of the Hamlin-Clarkson Herald and then the West Edition of Suburban News. In 1984, when I became editor after a couple years of doing freelance writing, type was set on a huge Compugraphic word processor into which various vinyl font style strips were loaded. The typesetter could see about 13 characters at a time on a small screen. An improved version of the machine added a larger screen and the ability to set blocks of type for advertising. The machines’ photo paper had to be processed in a chemical bath to reveal (develop) the type on the emulsion. In the case of ad creation, all art elements and type had to be cut with X-Acto® knives and run through a waxer that melted beeswax to create the needed sticky undersurface to adhere the designed message to layout paper. It is not a joke that you might cut out a single letter from a correction strip to fix up a typo. If you needed a scaled down version of a graphic, or a larger version, you would measure the original and match up those dimensions to the desired size (height or width) on a two-layered reproduction wheel and then program the percentage info into a room-sized camera in the dark room to get the desired art element. Then everything was waxed again (one side only) and burnished well with a roller to keep everything together as the pages had to travel to the press by car or truck in all kinds of weather and the hard work needed to stay firmly in place enroute.
When a copier arrived in the workplace, it could handle graphic-sizing needs more simply, and soon after that, the arrival of the computer allowed font changes with ease and permitted astounding options in graphic libraries and images. From then on, changes in opportunities to create seemed to escalate. Obviously things have changed and being involved in the process has helped keep the mind working, I maintain. I was amazed when we printed our first process color photograph on a front page and offered full color advertising possibilities. Today entire pages are uploaded to the press electronically. The week (not too long ago it seems) when we made digital files of every page of the four editions achieved a new level of sophistication and expertise for a small staff. All who worked on the effort appreciated that was another milestone, a marker in time to which we could not return. In other words, we knew we would be making a lot of PDF files every week from then on! So, there have been changes galore for this grassroots newspaper delivered at no charge to over 30,000 households each week. Free. Newspaper. I have been proud of it and grateful to work with dedicated and talented people – friends. More about them next week. For now, accept this as an announcement that I am leaving the job of editor for these newspapers at the end of the month. “It’s been the best job anyone could possibly have. I consider myself so very lucky,” Newman Riga Library Director Donna Haire wrote in an email shortly after she decided late last year to leave her job of three decades. Like mine, her job was unique. So I borrow her words because they express my sentiments exactly about my job as editor of Suburban News and Hamlin-Clarkson Herald. Garden grows a sense of community The front lawn of the First Presbyterian Church of Brockport, 35 State Street in the village, is a special place. It’s home to the Brockport Community Garden - a peaceful and productive spot open for sharing to anyone who passes-by. The garden was weeded, prepped and planted for the 2015 growing season on Saturday, May 30, and many members from the community came to take part - including the Brockport Blue Devils JV and Varsity Football Teams. “They (team members) eat their pre-game dinners at the church,” work-day organizer Anita Mault says. “We feed them during the season and they pay us back with hard work and sweat in the summertime. You could say one hand feeds the other.” The garden is planted with an amazing selection of vegetables and edible flowers including squash, tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, carrots, Swiss chard and more. Anita says the garden is chemical-free and draws the attention of residents and passers-by. “It’s amazing how many people stop by and ask questions,” she says. “It’s neat to have people stop. The kids get right in there and want to help.” The garden now consists of eight neat and tidy raised beds
with mulched paths in between. The garden has grown to twice the size of when it began, Anita says, and there is the desire to expand it further in the future. She grows many of the veggies from seed for transplanting in the garden and other plants are donated. “We grow very little from seed directly in the garden,” she says. Anyone can help work to maintain the garden over the growing season and all are invited to partake of the healthy harvest. There are a few ground rules: If it is ripe, eat it; share with others; if you are sure it’s a weed, pull it, if not, let it grow; if it is wilting, water it - a hose is available on the right side of the building; if you see a problem, fix it or call the church at 637-3780; spread the word and celebrate the beauty of God’s garden. The plantings are planned with “companion gardening” concepts in mind. Organizers say that means planting complimentary vegetables together and including annuals to attract beneficial insects and reduce weeds. The purpose of the garden is to bring members of the community closer together and improve the collective quality of life. According to the garden’s website (brockportcommunitygarden.weebly.com) the garden features fresh vegetables needed for a healthy diet; acknowledges obstacles that keep families from eating healthy foods such as expense, lack of time, skill, space and awareness; plantings help to show what is possible - to help people imagine their own gardens and menu options outside of processed and packaged foods; provides an opportunity to distribute recipes using the produce grown; provides opportunities to practice garden skills and provides a place to exchange knowledge and ideas. The Brockport Community Garden is worth a visit when you are in the Brockport area. You can pull a few weeds, sample some fresh produce and even get inspired for your own garden.

To the Wider Brockport Community Thanks from the Western Monroe Historical Society
Thank You The Wheel Fest Committee would like to thank all the sponsors, donors, Cruise-In participants, vendors and crafters that were a part of the Wheel Fest Festival this year on June 6, 2015. A big Thank You to all the community who came out to watch the entertainment and support the vendors to make this year a great success. Congratulations to the Silent Auction winners who participated in the fundraiser and raised over $1500 for the VFW to put towards a new gazebo.
We thank all the generous supporters, including the Rochester Area Community Foundation, who have enabled our “Step Up” capital campaign to exceed its goal of $25,000 by a substantial amount ahead of the anticipated date. As announced in early April, the funds were needed to secure the deteriorating cantilevered staircase leading from the second to the third floor of the Morgan-Manning House on Brockport’s Main Street. The stairs lead to the attic and to the belvedere on the roof. The project also preserves historic writing on the belvedere walls by family members. Now, we will be able to expand the scope of the project to include other necessary repairs to this historic gem. And, we anticipate the project will be complete in time for the fourth grade school tours to continue. The project takes place in this 50th Anniversary year of the founding of the Western Monroe Historical Society by volunteers who restored the home after a disastrous 1964 fire. The anniversary theme “Out of the Ashes” celebrates the founding volunteers who saved the home from destruction to a destiny as a preserved landmark for future generations. The community has shown the same foresight in that dedicated spirit of the WMHS founders. We also thank Westside News Inc., for news items that helped us reach the community with our appeal.
We look forward to seeing you all next year!
From the Western Monroe Historical Society, Don Voorheis, president Alicia Fink, campaign chairperson and immediate past president Gordon Fox, treasurer and project manager

Old photographs reveal much about history, the people who settled in the area, and the buildings that once graced, or continue to grace, a community. Unfortunately, photographs deteriorate with exposure to elements like sunshine or indoor lighting. In order to upgrade the housing of the Knapp Collection, the Museum Board has instituted an Adopt a Picture Program, which will provide archival glass and matting to photographs. Sigillo Chiropractic Diagnosing A Disc Injury
TWO BUSINESSES ONE LOCATION
Between each of the vertebrae that make up the human spine are discs that serve essentially as shock absorbers. They are tough but flexible pads and, like any other part of the body, they can wear down over time or be injured. The symptoms of a disc Dr. Christopher J. Sigillo, D.C. injury can vary widely. Symptoms could appear anywhere from the toes to the buttocks. They might include numbness, tingling, weakness, pain or a combination of them. So the diagnosis is tricky, but chiropractors are trained to do just that. Depending on where the symptoms appear, the chiropractor will know which part of the spine is the problem area. Nerves to the problem area pass through the spine and the vertebrae at specific locations. So the chiropractor may try to replicate the symptoms by testing specific discs. He or she may also test the strength and reflexes in your limbs and extremities. Magnetic resonant imaging (MRI) is another one of the techniques the chiropractor might use. Once the diagnosis is made, the good news is that most disc injuries will get better with conservative treatment that may be as simple as applying ice. Or the chiropractor may give you a spinal adjustment, or just advise you on how to improve your posture. Talk with your chiropractor about the function of a disc and ways to keep your discs healthy. FAIR COMPARISONS One advantage of funeral preplanning is the opportunity to compare prices and services. Doing so contrasts sharply with a situation in which family members feel forced to make decisions when a loved one dies without preplanning. While preplanning allows for budgetary considerations, it is important not to base decisions on cost alone. As any consumer knows, cost does not always reflect the full measure of the people and services that stand behind the product. Trustworthiness, sensitivity, support, experience, and quality all count for much as well. With this in mind, it is best to visit with a funeral director in order to gauge
the human connection that will best serve you at this most human of moments. THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME offers prearrangement planning and personalized funeral services to accommodate everyone’s wishes and budget. We also offer a wide assortment of caskets, monuments, containers, and personalization items to help enable families to create a wonderful tribute to the life of their loved one. For more information, please call 585-392-7100. We are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day, and we are located at 735 East Avenue. Family owned and trusted since 1976.
