High lake levels continue to pummel Ontario shoreline by Kristina Gabalski High lake levels combined with relentless rain and winds continue to eat up the local shoreline along Lake Ontario. On Friday, May 5, Assemblyman Steve Hawley, State Senator Robert Ortt, and representatives from the offices of Senator Charles Schumer and Congressman Chris Collins toured the south shoreline of Lake Ontario from Lyndonville in Orleans County east to the Town of Hamlin in Monroe County. During the tour, the group met with officials from both counties, town supervisors, highway superintendents, business owners and homeowners to gain firsthand knowledge of the dire conditions faced by those who live and work along the lake. Assemblyman Hawley said the devastation along the Lake Ontario shoreline has reached monumental proportions. He urged Governor Cuomo to petition
the International Joint Commission (IJC) to release water from the Moses-Saunders Dam to lower water levels in the lake, and also called on the governor to send more resources to the area. “Seeing it firsthand is absolutely astounding,” Hawley said. “This is pure and utter chaos.” He noted homes have been ruined, businesses forced to close and travel restricted. “Something must be done immediately to aid the thousands of residents affected by this havoc, and our community is going to need a lot of help from the state to recover,” Assemblyman Hawley said. In its weekly Great Lakes Water Level Update on May 5, the Army Corps of Engineers said Lake Ontario has risen 17 inches in the last month and is 22 inches above its long-term average level for the month of May. The Army Corps predicts Lake Ontario will rise two more inches during the month of May.

Community residents in the Town of Kendall came out to the Highway Garage Saturday morning, May 6 to help fill and distribute sandbags to lakeshore residents and businesses. The town filled highway trucks with sand which was then released through a salt spreader at the back of the truck and into sandbags. Prior to Saturday’s efforts, Kendall Highway Superintendent Warren Kruger said 21,000 sandbags had been filled and distributed. About 50 people volunteered on Saturday. On Saturday and Sunday, May 20 and 21, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Brockport will host the Seventh Annual Sacred Sites Open House, sponsored by the New York Landmarks Conservancy. Tours of the church, including St. Luke’s stained glass windows, will be conducted from 1 to 4 p.m. each day. The tours are free and open to the public. The church’s treasured stained glass windows include three Tiffany windows: a 1914 tri-panel landscape entitled “Peace, Perfect Peace,” a 1917 “Nativity” window, depicting mother and child, and the undated “Angels at the Cross.” Built in 1855, St. Luke’s is the only church designated as an official Landmark Sacred Site in Western Monroe County. Since 1986, The New York Landmarks Conservancy’s Sacred Sites program has supported more than 750 religious institutions throughout the state which have received over $9.3 million in matching grants. Hilton seniors celebrate decisions about their future For the fifth year, seniors at Hilton High School have had the opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments and decisions about their future during Senior Decision Day. Students wore T-shirts emblazoned with their college choice, decorated pennants and posted them on a wall in the foyer, and enjoyed cookies. “It’s a chance for recognition and for the seniors to get together one more time
as a class,” said School Counselor Mark Palumbo. “And it’s fun to see the variety of colleges and universities represented by our students.” A table of computers was also set up so seniors could complete an online exit survey and voice their opinions about what they liked and what needs improvement at Hilton High School. Community residents tour newly renovated third floor at Strong West by Kristina Gabalski Community residents were welcomed to Strong West in Brockport Saturday, May 6, to get a look at the recently opened multi-specialty suite on the third floor of the former Lakeside Memorial Hospital. The space houses UR Medicine Heart and Vascular, GI, Sleep Medicine, Urology, and the Wound Healing Center. The newly renovated space opened to patients in February and Practice Manager Nancy Wilson said each specialty is offered on a rotating basis during the week.

The suite features nine exam rooms and Strong West Administrator Bryan O’Donovan says the services offered at Strong West cater to the needs of community members.“It has been a huge transformation,” O’Donovan said of the renovation of the third floor. “I couldn’t be more proud of how it came out.” Carolina Marcus, M.D., specializes in sleep medicine. “Patients are thrilled,” she says of the new multi-specialty suite. “We keep hearing how much they appreciate what UR Medicine is able to offer.” Both O’Donovan and Dr. Marcus point out that Strong West gives patients access to the same physicians who practice at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. In addition to touring the third floor renovations, community members were also invited to see the updated imaging suite at Strong West which includes state-of-the-art MRI technology, X-ray, ultrasound, mammography, DXA, CT and nuclear medicine. The Orthopaedics and Rehab building on the Strong West campus was also open to visitors. It now includes Strong West’s podiatry practice. Doctors Ayaz Habib and Pearce Sloane said the practice moved from much smaller quarters at 80 West Avenue in Brockport to the Orthopaedics and Rehab building on March 1. Both said the move means much more space for the practice and enables them to “move foward,” offering patients in the Brockport community more resources from UR Medicine.

sports & recreation Blue Devils second half sinks Spartans by Warren Kozireski Five unanswered goals to start the second half doubled their lead as Brockport’s girls’ lacrosse team defeated Gates-Chili 12-7 in a steady rain. Senior Emma Moulton gave the Blue Devils an early 1-0 lead with a free possession tally just 39 seconds into the contest. Leah Daly made it 2-0 at 3:23 of the first half when she intercepted a pass at midfield and charged to the net. Three minutes later, Moulton helped make it 3-0 Brockport as she stepped into the passing lane to create a turnover and found Daly for the goal. After Gates-Chili scored, Moulton completed her hat trick with a free possession goal at 14:23 and using a spin move before putting the ball just inside the post at 19:24 to put Brockport ahead 5-1. The Spartans scored twice before Brockport senior Erika Ruggieri found Daly alone in front with just one second remaining in the half for a 6-3 lead.
Daly won the opening draw of the second half and drove to the net just 15 seconds in to start Brockport’s five goal run. Ruggieri hit the upper left corner of the net at 2:49, Christina Middleton scored with an assist from Moulton at 5:21 and junior Lizzy Schultheis scored on a scoop shot off an assist from Moulton at 7:14. Daly teamed up with Moulton to complete the scoring run at 9:29 and give the Blue Devils an 11-3 advantage. The Spartans scored two goals a little over a minute apart before Schultheis found Ruggieri to make it 12-5 Brockport. Two late goals by Gates-Chili made the final 12-7. Moulton finished with a seven point game with four goals and three assists while Daly had four goals and one assist and Ruggieri a three-point effort with a pair of goals. The defense of Sara Dempsey, Maddie Eggenberger and Rowan Grady accounted for eight of Brockport’s 19 ground balls in the contest to help the Blue Devils to their second win of the season.

Three-run innings lead Brockport by Warren Kozireski Brockport scored three runs in three separate innings as they defeated visiting Churchville-Chili 12-3 in girls’ softball. They plated three runs on just two hits in the second inning as Mandi Lucas reached on a wild pitch after striking out. She stole second before Larissa VanDetta walked. Paige McGrath then laid down a sacrifice bunt with both Lucas and VanDetta scoring when the throw to third was wild. McGrath ended up on third and scored on an RBI bunt single by Erynn Hogan. The Saints scored one run in the top of the third as a leadoff walk to Samantha Mickley and singles by both Alyssa Raniewicz and Sarah Russell loaded the bases. Alexis Raniewicz drove in Mickley with an RBI single, but the trail runner was gunned down at the plate on a perfect throw by Blue Devils center fielder Mara Santos. Brockport tacked a run to their lead in the third without benefit of a hit. Olyvia Zinkiewich reached second on an error and took third on a groundout. She was driven in on an RBI groundout by Camille Harrison.
Churchville-Chili closed to within 4-2 in the fourth inning as first baseman Michaela Temperato drew a one-out walk and stole second. Mickley singled her to third and the two pulled off a double-steal with two outs with Temperato scoring. The Blue Devils extended their lead to 7-2 with three runs in their half of the fourth with McGrath scoring on a passed ball after earlier singling and both Emily Parker and Santos knocking in runs with infield hits. It became 9-2 as VanDetta led off with a double, stole third and scored on an error. Hogan later laid down a bunt single, reached third on an error and came across on Parker’s sacrifice fly. The Saints final run came in the sixth as Jenna Prewasnicak reached base on an error and scored on Mickley’s RBI single. Brockport tacked on three more runs in the sixth as Emma Laureano, VanDetta and McGrath all stroked RBI singles. Pitcher Katie Overmyer allowed five hits while striking out seven and walking two in earning the victory - Brockport’s fifth of the campaign. “We have a lot of athleticism and talent and played some good small-ball, now it’s learning how to win,” Brockport head coach Chris Carr said.

Brockport Central School District showcases annual Art Show Brockport students in grades K-12 will showcase their art skills to the community at the annual district art exhibit May 22 through 26 at the College at Brockport Tower Fine Arts Building, located on Holley Street. The opening reception will be held Monday, May 22 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Tower Fine Arts Auditorium. Student recognition ceremonies begin at 6:15 p.m. for students in grades K-1; 6:30 p.m. for grades 2-3; 6:45 p.m. for grades 4-5
and 7 p.m. for grades 6-12. Student artwork will also be displayed in the galleries, which will be open from 6 to 8 p.m. on the 22nd. Army Corps of Engineers deploys advanced measure program to assist flood victims Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C,IBatavia) proudly announced that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will implement their Advanced Measures and Emergency Ops Flood Fighting programs immediately to assist flood victims along the Lake Ontario Shoreline. “This is the news that homeowners and businesses have been waiting for,” Hawley said. “I applaud the governor’s work to bring assistance to the flooded areas and I am hopeful that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be able to rapidly deploy services to mitigate further damage. I am still working with Governor Cuomo’s office to secure federal and state funds to help us rebuild after the flooding has subsided.” The program, which includes technical assistance and direct assistance, will consist of: data collection, identifying flood threats, mapping out flood evacuation
plans, inspecting Flood Control Works, identifying flood threats to the area, providing emergency flood flight supplies to the area, emergency construction of protective measures, and a host of other initiatives to protect life and prevent urban damages and flooding of public facilities. “I know this is a challenging time for our community, and my thoughts and prayers are with the flood victims and their family members,” Hawley said. “My office is always available to answer questions and help in any way that we can.” To read the official announcement, visit www.governor.ny.gov/news/governor-cuomo-deploys-mobile-command-centers-assist-flood-victims-insurance-claims-lake. Lefthander Dylan Hillabush threw three innings of shutout ball in the Hawks 7-6 come-from-behind win over Pembroke and tossed a three-hit shutout with 17 strikeouts to defeat Alexander 5-0 in a game played at Frontier Field. The 17 strikeouts are the most in game for a Holley pitcher in at least 16 years. Over a combined ten innings of work in two games, Hillabush allowed only three singles and one walk. “The most strikeouts I’ve ever had; it’s awesome to play on this field and I couldn’t believe that it went like this,” the Niagara University bound senior said. “I was nervous in the beginning, but I just kept pitching, kept pounding the zone and doing what I’ve always done. Curveball was good today, my cutter was what I got the ground balls on and just felt good tonight.” The Hawks jumped out to a 1-0 first inning lead on an infield single by Samuel Lammes and an RBI double down the left field line by catcher Patrick Bowers. They made it 2-0 in the second as Bailey Schubmehl stroked a one-out single to right and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A single to center by Nathan Towne sent him to third and he crossed the plate on an RBI sacrifice fly by Collin Papaj. It became 4-0 in the fourth with two unearned runs. Towne hit a clutch two-out, two-RBI single to right scoring Lammes and Bower who had earlier walked. In the sixth, the Hawks added an insurance run. Papaj was hit by a pitch and went to second on an error with Lammes also reaching. Bower followed with an RBI single to left to make the final 5-0. In the earlier game, Pembroke opened up a 6-0 lead scoring twice in the first inning, twice in the second and tacking on two unearned runs in the second. But, thanks to five innings of solid relief pitching by Ryan Andrews, the Hawks began their comeback when Papaj reached on an error, stole second and went to third on a
wild pitch. He scored on an RBI groundout by Lammes. Lammes went to second on an error and third on a fielder’s choice before scoring on a throwing error on a steal of second by Hillabush, who walked. Pinch hitter Towne then stroked an RBI single to right to make it 6-3 Pembroke. After Hillabush struck out the side in the top of the seventh on only ten pitches, the Hawks plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game. The rally again began on an error with Schubmehl reaching. Pinch hitter Mike Passeral singled down the left field line and Papaj greeted the new Dragons pitcher with an infield single to load the bases. Lammes knocked in the first run with a sacrifice fly with both runners advancing on an ill-advised throw home. Passeral scored on a wild pitch and Papaj came across on another sacrifice fly by Patrick Bower. In extra innings, Pembroke got runners to second and third with two outs, but Hillabush struck out the final batter of the inning. Holley had a glorious chance to win the game in the bottom of the eighth with the bases loaded and no outs, but a flyout to center became a triple play when the runner from second ran before the catch and it was ruled the runner from second left early on appeal. But the Hawks finally won the game in the bottom of the ninth as Schubmehl, after being down in the count 0-2, worked a leadoff walk. He advanced to second on a dropped force and to third as Papaj was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Lammes then dropped down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt on the first pitch he saw with Schubmehl racing down the line with the winning run. “We had our number two hitter up and he’s a good bunter so I figured with no outs, we could spend one,” Holley head coach Jason Cole said. The wins mark the Hawks third and fourth of the season.

Hilton CSD School Budget Vote and Board of Education Election The Hilton Central School District 2017-18 School Budget Vote and Board of Education Election will be held Tuesday, May 16 from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Hilton High School (Parma, Clarkson and Hamlin residents) and Northwood Elementary School (Greece residents). The $80,875,790 budget proposal for the 2017-18 school year, a 1.12 percent increase over last year’s budget, results in an estimated 0.21 percent tax rate increase in Greece, Hamlin and Parma, and an estimated 2.32 percent increase in Clarkson. Clarkson has a partial property valuation, whereas Greece, Hamlin and Parma properties are assessed at full valuation. For example, a home valued at $100,000 would have the same school tax bill in all four towns. In addition to the budget proposition, district residents are being asked to vote on a $1,151,162 bus purchase proposition, and two open positions on the Board of Education. The candidates are incumbent Maryanne Chaffee and Brian O’Connor. The two candidates with the most votes will serve three-year terms of office beginning July 1. Planting times by Kristina Gabalski May is here and it is time to start planting your vegetable garden, but remember, certain conditions must be present for the greatest chance of success. Once again, we have had a wide-range of spring weather conditions - from fleeting warmth, to high winds, hail, heavy rain and even some wet snow. One of the most important considerations before planting is whether your garden soil is ready. If you start working the soil and it sticks to your shoes or garden tools, it is too wet for planting. Take a small amount of soil and press it in your hand. If it stays molded in a ball, you need to wait for conditions to dry out. If it crumbles and breaks into small clumps, you are ready to plant. Rake the area you have cleared and tilled or spaded for planting. A firm, fine seedbed is best for small-seeded crops, but be careful not to compact the soil which can promote the crusting of the surface and damage emerging seedlings. Be aware of your last average frost date ... we are past that now in mid-May, but frosts or even hard freezes can’t really be ruled-out until after Memorial Day. Vegetables and herbs that need warm air and soil conditions are better planted after June 1. Those include basil, cucumber, muskmelon, pumpkins, summer and winter squashes and watermelon. Cornell Cooperative Extension advises that crops like beans, eggplant, peppers, potatoes, sweet corn and tomatoes can be planted earlier, but again, late frosts or freezes can kill transplants and keep seeds from germinating. Holding off on planting these crops can often be helpful. Many vegetable crops, however, like the cool conditions and are ready to plant as soon as your soil has dried out. Those include broccoli, beets, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, kale, kohlrabi, leeks, lettuce, onions, parsley, peas, radish, Swiss chard, spinach, turnips and rutabagas. Raised beds and large planters are popular right now and are very helpful for early crops as they improve drainage and facilitate ease of planting - whether from seed or transplant. As you prepare to transplant the vegetables you have grown inside from seed or purchased from the garden

May is a big month for planting in the garden, and vegetables like peas and lettuce are safe to plant even when frost still threatens. This is good advice whenever you plant - whether it’s bare root, transplants or even larger shrubs and trees. Water plants well before you transplant and loosen the roots of the rootball gently. You may place plants in peat pots directly into the garden, but make sure the top edge of the pot is below the soil surface or moisture will be wicked away from the root ball and stress the plant. If you are intent in getting crops like tomatoes out there early, protect them with purchased and home-made hot caps. Once temperatures become warm, remove the caps during the day. If you are planting summer blooming non-hardy bulbs like dahlias, colocasia (elephant ears) or gladiolas, it is probably best to wait until all threat of frost has passed. These plants are not cold tolerant and like warm soil conditions to grow.
