High lake levels continue to pummel Ontario shoreline by Kristina Gabalski High lake levels combined with relentless rain and winds continue to eat up the local shoreline along Lake Ontario. On Friday, May 5, Assemblyman Steve Hawley, State Senator Robert Ortt, and representatives from the offices of Senator Charles Schumer and Congressman Chris Collins toured the south shoreline of Lake Ontario from Lyndonville in Orleans County east to the Town of Hamlin in Monroe County. During the tour, the group met with officials from both counties, town supervisors, highway superintendents, business owners and homeowners to gain firsthand knowledge of the dire conditions faced by those who live and work along the lake. Assemblyman Hawley said the devastation along the Lake Ontario shoreline has reached monumental proportions. He urged Governor Cuomo to petition
the International Joint Commission (IJC) to release water from the Moses-Saunders Dam to lower water levels in the lake, and also called on the governor to send more resources to the area. “Seeing it firsthand is absolutely astounding,” Hawley said. “This is pure and utter chaos.” He noted homes have been ruined, businesses forced to close and travel restricted. “Something must be done immediately to aid the thousands of residents affected by this havoc, and our community is going to need a lot of help from the state to recover,” Assemblyman Hawley said. In its weekly Great Lakes Water Level Update on May 5, the Army Corps of Engineers said Lake Ontario has risen 17 inches in the last month and is 22 inches above its long-term average level for the month of May. The Army Corps predicts Lake Ontario will rise two more inches during the month of May.

Community residents in the Town of Kendall came out to the Highway Garage Saturday morning, May 6 to help fill and distribute sandbags to lakeshore residents and businesses. The town filled highway trucks with sand which was then released through a salt spreader at the back of the truck and into sandbags. Prior to Saturday’s efforts, Kendall Highway Superintendent Warren Kruger said 21,000 sandbags had been filled and distributed. About 50 people volunteered on Saturday. The National Guard was also deployed to help with sandbagging efforts. K. Gabalski photo.

Assemblyman Steve Hawley meets with Monroe County Legislator Mike Rockow, Town of Hamlin Highway Superintendent Steve Baase and Hamlin Town Supervisor Eric Peters before touring flood damage to Sandy Harbor Drive and the Brockport Yacht Club. K. Gabalski photo.

Hilton seniors celebrate decisions about their future For the fifth year, seniors at Hilton High School have had the opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments and decisions about their future during Senior Decision Day. Students wore T-shirts emblazoned with their college choice, decorated pennants and posted them on a wall in the foyer, and enjoyed cookies. “It’s a chance for recognition and for the seniors to get together one more time
as a class,” said School Counselor Mark Palumbo. “And it’s fun to see the variety of colleges and universities represented by our students.” A table of computers was also set up so seniors could complete an online exit survey and voice their opinions about what they liked and what needs improvement at Hilton High School. Five unanswered goals to start the second half doubled their lead as Brockport’s girls’ lacrosse team defeated Gates-Chili 12-7 in a steady rain. Senior Emma Moulton gave the Blue Devils an early 1-0 lead with a free possession tally just 39 seconds into the contest. Leah Daly made it 2-0 at 3:23 of the first half when she intercepted a pass at midfield and charged to the net. Three minutes later, Moulton helped make it 3-0 Brockport as she stepped into the passing lane to create a turnover and found Daly for the goal. After Gates-Chili scored, Moulton completed her hat trick with a free possession goal at 14:23 and using a spin move before putting the ball just inside the post at 19:24 to put Brockport ahead 5-1. The Spartans scored twice before Brockport senior Erika Ruggieri found Daly alone in front with just one second remaining in the half for a 6-3 lead. Daly won the opening draw of the second half and drove to the net just 15 seconds in to start Brockport’s five goal run. Ruggieri hit the upper left corner of the net at 2:49, Christina Middleton scored with an assist from Moulton at 5:21 and junior Lizzy Schultheis scored on a scoop shot off an assist from Moulton at 7:14. Daly teamed up with Moulton to complete the scoring run at 9:29 and give the Blue Devils an 11-3 advantage. The Spartans scored two goals a little over a minute apart before Schultheis found Ruggieri to make it 12-5 Brockport. Two late goals by Gates-Chili made the final 12-7. Moulton finished with a seven point game with four goals and three assists while Daly had four goals and one assist and Ruggieri a three-point effort with a pair of goals. The defense of Sara Dempsey, Maddie Eggenberger and Rowan Grady accounted for eight of Brockport’s 19 ground balls in the contest to help the Blue Devils to their second win of the season.
Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary (Never Known to Fail) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin assist me in my necessity. Oh star of the sea, help me and show me here you are my mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my Heart, to succor me in my necessity. (Make request). There are none that can withstand your power. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to Thee. (3 times). Holy Mother, I place this prayer in your hands (3 times). Say this prayer for three consecutive days and then you must publish it, and it will be granted to you. Gratefully,, S.W.

Army Corps of Engineers deploys advanced measure program to assist flood victims Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C,IBatavia) proudly announced that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will implement their Advanced Measures and Emergency Ops Flood Fighting programs immediately to assist flood victims along the Lake Ontario Shoreline. “This is the news that homeowners and businesses have been waiting for,” Hawley said. “I applaud the governor’s work to bring assistance to the flooded areas and I am hopeful that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be able to rapidly deploy services to mitigate further damage. I am still working with Governor Cuomo’s office to secure federal and state funds to help us rebuild after the flooding has subsided.” The program, which includes technical assistance and direct assistance, will consist of: data collection, identifying flood threats, mapping out flood evacuation
plans, inspecting Flood Control Works, identifying flood threats to the area, providing emergency flood flight supplies to the area, emergency construction of protective measures, and a host of other initiatives to protect life and prevent urban damages and flooding of public facilities. “I know this is a challenging time for our community, and my thoughts and prayers are with the flood victims and their family members,” Hawley said. “My office is always available to answer questions and help in any way that we can.” To read the official announcement, visit www.governor.ny.gov/news/governor-cuomo-deploys-mobile-command-centers-assist-flood-victims-insurance-claims-lake. FUNERALS COMFORT THE LIVING If you need further reason to preplan a funeral, think about how it will help your family make the transition after your death. Aside from providing the living with the opportunity to commemorate a life that has been lived, a funeral helps grief-stricken individuals take the first step toward accepting the reality of death and pay their final respects. This process can be helped enormously by the show of emotional support made by family and friends. Funerals also help the bereaved by allowing them to view the body and, thereby, overcome the denial that psychologists have established is a natural part of the grieving process. Funerals are for the living so that
they might begin to find acceptance and peace. A funeral is a meaningful event that can help ease the pain of separation that naturally accompanies death. It is a time of sharing good memories and experiences with family and friends. It is a time when respect, concern, and appreciation for a life that has been lived can be expressed in a sincere manner. For more information about the funeral services THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME offers, please call 585-392-7100. We are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day, and we are located at 735 East Avenue. Family owned and trusted since 1976.

Joe’s stories, some old, some new and mostly true - Kenny’s Auto died when his motorcycle crashed on Hinkleyville Road. He was Shauna’s nephew and worked at the shop. It would be impossible not to notice a number of deer antlers that are placed around the office area. That brings us to Ken’s other interest, namely breeding and raising White Tail deer, which he does in a fenced area behind his home on Chambers Street in Ogden. It is a DEC licensed facility and currently has about 14 adult deer soon to be joined by a number of fawns. This venture started about 11 years ago when they purchased two deer from a breeder in Ohio. On my visit to Ken and Shauna’s home, I was greeted by Chuck the duck, a colorful and quacky little guy who is the survivor of a fox feeding attack that consumed his two buddies when they were kept in a cage out near the deer yards. Since then, he has been housed in their garage at night but has the run of the place during the day. There is a convenient little landscaped pool near the front door where he can frolic, but Chuck will also go up the steps and into the house if the door is open.

Driving past Kenny’s at 2606 Nichols Street (Route 31) it doesn’t appear any different than most other vehicle repair shops. It is the owner that adds a measure of uniqueness to it. Kenneth Lee Geil was literally born into the car business since his father, for many years, operated the Mobil station at Manitou Road and Route 31, about two miles east of Kenny’s shop. Growing up, Ken spent most of his time learning from his dad and developing his love for all types of motorized vehicles. That is evident from the pictures which decorate the walls in the reception area. Among them are photos of his motorcycle and a former drag racing car he drove named the “Sledge Hammer,” perhaps so named because it “beat up” the competition. Also several of his nine classic cars or trucks are depicted there. Of course there are photos of his wife Shauna and their three daughters, Lilly, Violet and Kenlee. Sadly there was also a picture of a young man named Dylan Takett, who

Assisted by Shauna, Ken artificially inseminates some does to help develop the herd he wants to have. He predicts that May 23 is fawn arrival date, or thereabouts. Ken also notes that most does have a single fawn their first year but in following years may have twins or triplets. Fawning time is also a family affair with the girls, under Shauna’s supervision, helping to bottle feed the fawns that need it. I was treated to a ride around the perimeter of the fenced deer pens and was even able to pet one of them. Not all of them are friendly and on entering a pen to feed them, Ken has to be on guard as some bucks would rather fight than eat. Yes, there is a connection between the deer and the collision business. Ken says that during the fall mating season, there is a period when about 60 percent of his customers come there because of a deer-car collision. The deer usually lose that battle. Fortunately none of them involve Ken’s deer!

Tactics for late season turkeys by T.R. Hendrick The rumor of sunrise was just being whispered in the eastern sky as I stuck my head out our sliding glass door and listened intently. The robins were in full voice as they always are at this time of year and I strained my ears, hoping to hear my favorite sound in all the outdoors…a turkey gobble. I didn’t have to wait long as a thunderous gobble echoed down the shores of the Genesee River, waking up the sun with its intensity. By the sound of the deep drawn-out gobble, there was a large longbeard turkey roosting across the river from my home again this spring. The big guy was declaring his availability to all the hens within hearing distance. My skin popped goosebumps and a jolt of adrenalin shot through my body. I wasn’t even hunting this particular bird but still the sound stirred that kind of emotion in me. I have hunted turkeys for over forty years in 12 states and one Canadian province and the sound of a turkey gobble still jumpstarts my tired old heart like I’m twenty years old again. The boisterous gobbler hanging out here reminded me that we are living in some great times in New York for turkey hunters. I grew up in an era where there were zero turkeys in this part of New York State. As great as the turkey hunting is in New York, I also believe it is one of the toughest states to consistently be successful. This is due to the hunting pressure the birds get here. There are very few gobbling turkeys in this state that somebody isn’t hunting. The birds that don’t get shot wise-up fast, so it is important to adapt your tactics as the season progresses. What works on opening week may not work on week two. I believe hunting pressure trumps all the other factors that
go into hunting spring turkey, such as the number of hens, weather, gobbling cycles, etc. A gobbler that has had a close call or two already in the season is much harder to fool. To get some tips on how to be successful on these pressured New York turkeys, I contacted local turkey ninja Jimmy Skews for some advice. Jimmy’s first tip is to beware of using decoys on pressured turkeys. Most have had a bad experience with a decoy by this point in the season and quickly figure out if the hen is not moving, he’s out. Skews also suggests toning down your calling after the first week. Loud yelling and sharp cutting will quickly send a longbeard that has had a close call moving in the other direction. He also stresses that you must pattern your gun and know how it shoots out to at least forty yards as these educated turkeys will rarely come waltzing straight in like week one. Because of the time he has spent at the range, Skews feels confident shooting out to at least forty yards. His ammo of choice is a 12-gauge, 3.5 inch, Hevi-Shot Blended shell. Jimmy explains the Hevi-Shot BB’s are forged with tungsten alloy rather than copper-plated lead like most other turkey loads. The Turgeon BB’s carry a lot more energy than lead out at distances of forty yards or more. He admits at five bucks a shell they are very pricey, but with all the other efforts that go into turkey hunting and the fact that you may only get one shot a season, you should shoot the best shells out there. Skews takes it one step further with a Red-Dot scope mounted on his “Turkey Harvester 2000.” He says scopes are fantastic on a stationary turkey but warns that a running bird is a different matter. Jimmy emphasizes you must be disciplined enough to keep your eye in the scope, find the running bird, put the red dot an inch ahead of his melon and only then pull the trigger.

Get out & grow! by Kristina Gabalski
Planting times by Kristina Gabalski May is here and it is time to start planting your vegetable garden, but remember, certain conditions must be present for the greatest chance of success. Once again, we have had a wide-range of spring weather conditions - from fleeting warmth, to high winds, hail, heavy rain and even some wet snow. One of the most important considerations before planting is whether your garden soil is ready. If you start working the soil and it sticks to your shoes or garden tools, it is too wet for planting. Take a small amount of soil and press it in your hand. If it stays molded in a ball, you need to wait for conditions to dry out. If it crumbles and breaks into small clumps, you are ready to plant. Rake the area you have cleared and tilled or spaded for planting. A firm, fine seedbed is best for small-seeded crops, but be careful not to compact the soil which can promote the crusting of the surface and damage emerging seedlings. Be aware of your last average frost date ... we are past that now in mid-May, but
May is a big month for planting in the garden, and vegetables like peas and lettuce are safe to plant even when frost still threatens. Basil, shown in the photo, is best planted when things have warmed-up in June. K. Gabalski photo.

frosts or even hard freezes can’t really be ruled-out until after Memorial Day. Vegetables and herbs that need warm air and soil conditions are better planted after June 1. Those include basil, cucumber, muskmelon, pumpkins, summer and winter squashes and watermelon. Cornell Cooperative Extension advises that crops like beans, eggplant, peppers, potatoes, sweet corn and tomatoes can be planted earlier, but again, late frosts or freezes can kill transplants and keep seeds from germinating. Holding off on planting these crops can often be helpful. Many vegetable crops, however, like the cool conditions and are ready to plant as soon as your soil has dried out. Those include broccoli, beets, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, kale, kohlrabi, leeks, lettuce, onions, parsley, peas, radish, Swiss chard, spinach, turnips and rutabagas. Raised beds and large planters are popular right now and are very helpful for early crops as they improve drainage and facilitate ease of planting - whether from seed or transplant.
As you prepare to transplant the vegetables you have grown inside from seed or purchased from the garden center, University of Minnesota Extension recommends picking a time in the late afternoon or a cool, cloudy, calm day. This is good advice whenever you plant - whether it’s bare root, transplants or even larger shrubs and trees. Water plants well before you transplant and loosen the roots of the rootball gently. You may place plants in peat pots directly into the garden, but make sure the top edge of the pot is below the soil surface or moisture will be wicked away from the root ball and stress the plant. If you are intent in getting crops like tomatoes out there early, protect them with purchased and home-made hot caps. Once temperatures become warm, remove the caps during the day. If you are planting summer blooming non-hardy bulbs like dahlias, colocasia (elephant ears) or gladiolas, it is probably best to wait until all threat of frost has passed. These plants are not cold tolerant and like warm soil conditions to grow.

Tactics for late season turkeys
We don’t serve HAMBURGERS!
continued from page 10 My closing thought on turkey hunting in New York: I would love to see the D.E.C. open the New York season one week earlier and close it after the third week in May. In my experience, turkeys in New York are well finished breeding by then. Most of the adult gobblers are off in their bachelor flocks and rarely responding to a turkey call, hence are very hard to hunt in late May. I have petitioned the D.E.C. with many long emails over the years to Michael Schiavone (michael.schiavone@ dec.ny.gov), the top turkey biologist in New York, on this subject. I believe an earlier spring opener for both the youth and the regular season would greatly improve the success of turkey hunters in New York. Many other northern states open their season in midApril and have greater success while still keeping healthy turkey populations. Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota that have a thriving turkey population with a mid-April turkey opener. All of those States started with a much smaller turkey population than New York back in the 70’s and have now surpassed us in population and hunter harvest. All wild turkey gobblers are polygamous and will breed up to a dozen hens each spring, so no matter how many are harvested, you can be assured all the hens will get bred each spring. Now let’s go! Set that alarm for that insane early morning hour and get after them…we’re burning season!
