Gay Lenhard retires after 40 years of service to Ogden community

by Tami Raco Ogden Supervisor Gay Lenhard was born in Niagara Falls. She moved to Spencerport with her mother and brother when she was six years old to live with her grandfather, and this is where she has spent much of her life. She grew up at a time when Spencerport was more rural, long before the village was bustling as it is now.

Gay graduated from Spencerport High School and then went to college at RIT, where she earned a two-year degree in business. She met her future husband, Don, at a college dance, and they began dating. Gay was not ready to settle down at that time in her life and moved to Las Vegas to be near her father. After a year,

she moved back to Spencerport and reconnected with Don. They later married and raised their daughters, Robbie and Kristie, in Spencerport.

Gay worked several different secretarial jobs, but her priorities shifted from her career to her family once she became a mom. After their daughters were teens, Gay decided to go back to college to obtain her four-year degree. “Going back to college as a mother of two young children and a wife was frightening and intimidating, but receiving my college education has provided endless rewards,” Gay said. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in psychology, graduating summa cum laude.

Gay’s career in local government began with the Spencerport Board of Education.

years and held the office of President for three years. Gay then went on to serve as the Assistant to the Supervisor for the Town of Ogden. As her responsibilities and experience increased, she then became the town’s Director of Personnel. When former Supervisor Donald Walzer retired in 1998, Lenhard was encouraged to run for the Town Supervisor position. She was elected to office and has held this seat for 23 years, with a total of 40 years of town employment. She officially announced her retirement this summer. Mike Zale was elected to succeed her as Ogden Town Supervisor.

During Gay’s decades of service to the community, she was awarded the NYS Woman of Distinction Award (2003), served as a Spencerport Chamber of Commerce board member, served on the Eagle Scout Review Board, was Chairperson of the Ogden Senior Center Advisory Board, and served on various boards at The White Church.

As Gay reflects on her years working in community government, she sees how much has changed over the last 20 years.

“There has been such great change. The town has welcomed so many new businesses over the years, both small and large, as well as the increase in the many new housing developments built in Ogden.

We have gone from a rural community to a highly sought-after suburb of Rochester.

I really enjoy seeing the local stores and businesses thrive,” she said.

Lenhard has many favorite memories throughout her career. “Meeting so many wonderful people, both residents and employees, was very rewarding.” She is also grateful to have had an impact on community initiatives such as CASE (Commission to Analyze Savings and Efficiency), bringing quality water to residents on Vroom Road, completing a comprehensive plan for the future of Ogden, and assisting with the formation of a self-funded Municipal

As a lifelong resident of Spencerport who gave four decades of her life to serving the community, Gay’s career was influential on many. She credits her mother as being one of the biggest influences in her life and on her career in local government. Her mom raised both Gay and her brother as a single parent. “Seeing my mom overcome many challenging situations helped me develop my strong work ethic,” Gay said. She was also influenced by many colleagues over the span of her career in government, which provided her with valuable insight.

The town will be celebrating Supervisor Gay Lenhard’s retirement at the end of the month as they congratulate her on her years of service. Although retired, Gay will remain a familiar face in the town. “I hope to enjoy walks in the village, spend time with my friends and family, volunteer, and maybe even take a trip or two,” she said.

Monroe County to host COVID-19 vaccine clinic at Brockport HS Monroe County will be hosting voluntary COVID-19 vaccination clinics on November 18 and December 9, 3 to 5 p.m., at the Brockport High School cafeteria.

Moderna, Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson vaccines will be available for eligible individuals age 12 and older. First dose, second dose, and booster/third dose shots will be available for eligible individuals.

Children ages five to 11 will not be vaccinated at this clinic.

Appointments are preferable, but walk-ins will be allowed during the clinic

timeframe. Appointments can be made online at https://healthcalls.monroecounty. gov/vac/form/brockporthspjkzr. Parking will be available in the student parking lot at Brockport High School (follow signs).

Gift cards will be given for first and second doses ($50 gift card for first dose of Pfizer/Moderna; $50 gift card for second dose; $100 gift card for single shot of Johnson & Johnson), Gift cards are provided only while supplies last.

The Brockport Central School District respects that medical decisions are an

individual’s choice with guidance limited to one’s physician. The district is providing this voluntary opportunity for its employees, families, community members, and students (age 12 or older).

Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. All individuals must provide identification upon arrival. After receiving the vaccination, individuals will receive their vaccination card and be asked to remain on-site for 15 to 30 minutes for monitoring.

Gillett Road bridge closing for repairs The Gillett Road bridge over the Erie Canal in Ogden will close to traffic beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, November 15. The closure is necessary to facilitate bridge repairs and is expected to last at least one week.

Motorists are urged to take alternate routes. All work is weather dependent and subject to schedule changes.

Police warn of increase in stolen vehicles

Since July, area law enforcement agencies have seen an increase of vehicles being stolen across Monroe County.

They have identified three trends: 1. During the night, residential neighborhoods are being targeted, often by a group of teenagers, three to six people, entering unlocked vehicles. They will find a set of keys inside the vehicle and steal the car.

2. Victims are being forced out of their cars by the threat of physical force or a weapon is being displayed such as a gun or knife (car jacking).

3. Residential homes are being entered, often during the nighttime, through an unlocked door or window. Once inside the home, they locate the keys to the car on the kitchen counter.

Police have made numerous arrests and there are cases pending. The problem continues and law enforcement agencies are offering the following suggestions to residents: 1. If you are confronted with a weapon or physical force, surrender the vehicle. A car is replaceable, a life is not.

2. Leave outside house lights on during the night.

3. Keep your house doors and windows locked.

4. Keep your car locked.

5. Don’t leave a spare set of keys in your parked vehicle.

6. Don’t leave any firearms in your vehicle.

7. If you see your car dome light on in the middle of the night or see anyone checking unlocked cars by walking up and down driveways, quietly call 911 and provide as much information as you can.

Police say that stopping this latest trend of crime will take a community effort and are asking for residents’ cooperation and assistance.

Nicholas Picardo named Kendall School Superintendent The Kendall Board of Education has selected Nicholas Picardo as the next superintendent of the Kendall Central School District (KCSD). He will begin his new position on January 1, 2022.

“The Board of Education is excited that Nicholas Picardo, who has 16 years of experience in our district, will be our new leader for KCSD,” said Board President Lisa Levett.

“We are thrilled to begin this next chapter with Nick, who brings a passion for teamwork and growth. We welcome his commitment to a well-rounded 21st-Century educational program and equity for all our students.”

Nicholas Picardo is currently the Executive Director for Student Services and Athletic Director for KCSD and has served in those positions since July 2018. Prior to that, Picardo served as the Coordinator of Student Services and Committee on Special Education Chair in the district, a position he began in July 2014. Picardo has spent his educational career in Kendall serving as an administrator, social studies teacher, department chair, coach, and advisor. Picardo and his wife, Kelly, live in the district, where their daughter, Sophia, attends school.

“The Kendall community is truly a special place to live and work,” said Picardo. “I am both humbled and excited to

have been chosen as the next superintendent of the Kendall Central School District. I look forward to working with the Board of Education, staff, and community to ensure that we continue to provide our students with an exceptional educational experience.”

Comments Sweden Town Board seeks Baltz property easement On January 7, 2019, the Town of Sweden received a letter from the New York State Department of Transportation confirming that DOT agreed that traffic volumes on Route 31 were substantial and indicating that the town might desire to have a signalized exit/entrance from Sweden Village onto Route 31 which, could be accomplished by extending Gary Drive to the Walmart signal.

An extension of Gary Drive to Route 31 would necessarily cross a small piece of property owned by the Baltz family. The property had been for sale for many years, an indication that the Baltz family had no intention of retaining the property for its own use. In fact, the Baltz properties were marketed as having great development potential.

In January 2020, the Town learned of a grant opportunity for development of Town roads to benefit the public interest and that a contemplated Gary Drive extension to Route 31 would be within the scope of projects for which grant money would be available. Supervisor Kevin Johnson, and the Deputy Supervisor at the time, met with a representative of the Baltz family on January 7, 2020, to discuss an easement across the property.

The representative subsequently reported back that the Baltz family was agreeable to granting an easement, that the family recognized the added value that would be brought to their property with a signalized access point and that they were not requesting compensation for the easement. We asked the representative to have the Baltz’s put this in writing so we could be certain of their intent.

On February 7, 2020, all of the Baltz property owners, Anne Baltz, Margaret Baltz, Fletcher Baltz, and Elizabeth Nash signed a written statement they prepared that read: “The Town of Sweden has contacted us as the owners of the property on Brockport Spencerport Road, tax account number 084.01-1-25.115, for the purpose of acquiring a rightof-way through our property from the current east end of Gary Drive approximately 200 feet to Brockport Spencerport Road. The purpose of the right-of-way would be the construction of the extension of Gary Drive, including appropriate drainage features and a sidewalk, to Brockport Spencerport Road. It is our intention to grant the right-ofway as soon as the legal documents are prepared.”

There was no request for payment, no request to enter negotiations. It was a simple and direct promise: we will sign as soon as the Town is ready.

The Town, relying on the written affirmation of the four property owners and statements by the Baltz family representative, submitted the grant application on February 12, 2020. The application included a copy of the Baltz’s written intention to grant the easement.

The Town deliberately chose not to complete the easement paperwork until: 1. the grant was awarded; 2. public input was gathered from Sweden Village residents; 3. engineers determined the exact placement of the roadway in conjunction with the NYS DOT. In May 2020, the Town was awarded a grant in the amount of $175,500 for the Gary Drive extension. Sweden Village residents were surveyed in July 2020, a public meeting was held in August 2020, a traffic study and an in-depth environmental review was completed in the fall of 2020, an appraisal and survey of the property were done in 2021, and plans were submitted to the NYS DOT for review.

Why are we beginning Eminent Domain proceedings?

One or more of the Baltz’s have determined, for whatever reason, to not sign the easement. The Baltz’s have never formally withdrawn the offer to sign the easement and have not indicated to the Town why they are not proceeding to sign and deliver it to the Town; the property is still for sale meaning the Baltzs’ are still willing to transfer ownership of all their property; they have never made a demand of the Town for payment of any money for the needed easement and right of way. But the fact that the Town has not received a signed easement and right of way agreement and has no current expectation of receiving one obstructs the Town’s ability to proceed with the project.

We know that safety on Route 31 between Owens Road and Route 19 is a serious public safety concern. The NYS DOT and the Town Engineer have made it clear that the Gary Drive extension is the safest, most efficient way to provide a traffic light-controlled entrance/exit to Route 31 from Sweden Village. The residents of Sweden Village are overwhelmingly in support of the Gary Drive extension.

Understandably, the opposition to the project is largely limited to the owners of those homes most directly impacted by the extension.

The Town has an extraordinarily unique opportunity to improve safety at very little cost to Sweden taxpayers. The DOT has willingly absorbed the largest share of the project cost into its Route 31 Improvement Project budget. That is unheard of and it is a reflection of how important the State DOT believes the Gary Drive extension is. Monroe County awarded the largest 2020 Community Development Block Grant funding to this project. That is how important the Monroe County Department of Planning and Development believes the Gary Drive extension is.

The Town Board has studied this project from every perspective at great length and is going forward. It is the right thing to do for public safety. It is the will of the people.

There is no alternative that achieves the level of public safety that the Gary Drive extension provides for as little cost to the Sweden taxpayer. The traffic studies performed support this solution to the public safety concerns as the best alternative.

The NYS DOT is going forward with its improvements to Route 31 in this area. The improvements include acquiring a small piece of this same Baltz property. We have been told that New York State will make an offer for the very small piece of land it needs. We have been told that if the Baltz family rejects the offer, New York State will also proceed with Eminent Domain.

No Eminent Domain proceedings would be needed if the Baltz family were to deliver the easement and right of way agreement to the Town as they originally promised they would. Even if the Baltz’s had subsequently requested a reasonable dollar payment for delivery the easement and right of way agreement, the Town would have considered it.

The Sweden Town Board is committed to completing the Gary Drive extension. We will improve access to Route 31 for Sweden Village residents. We will improve traffic safety in this area of Route 31. We will not break our promise to Sweden Village or compromise the public safety of all our residents.

Spencerport author’s new novel delves into one family’s mysteries, secrets and drama Spencerport resident David B. Seaburn recently released his eighth novel, Broken Pieces of God. The book, set in the Rochester area, explores the complex and extraordinary lives of an average American couple, Eddy and Gayle Kimes.

The Kimes are like many American families. Eddy has lost his David B. Seaburn. Provided photo. job and Gayle has cancer. Unemployment, failed chemotherapy, and no insurance bring them to the edge of life’s precipice. Can anything save them? Eddy turns to a local preacher and a statue called Jesus the Consoler, seeking a miracle; Gayle dives deep into a secret scheme devised years earlier when her husband lost his first job.

This is a story of resilience in the face of uncertainty, hope in the midst of darkness, and family ties strengthened by life’s vicissitudes.

Seaburn’s first publication was a series of poems when he was in seminary at Boston University (1972-75). He continued writing while serving a church for six years, mostly short stories, plays, songs, essays, and two manuscripts of inspirational prose.

He entered the field of marriage and family therapy in 1986 and was Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Family Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center where he did extensive academic writing.

He started writing fiction in 2000, completing his first novel, Darkness is as Light, in 2001. It was published in 2005. “My publishing arc seems to be one novel every two years,”Seaburn said.

His previous works have received critical acclaim. He was a Finalist for the National Indie Excellence Award in General Fiction (2011), placed second in the TAZ Awards for Fiction (2017), was short listed for the Somerset Award (2018), was an American Book Fest Finalist for “Best Book” in General Fiction (2019), and a Semi-Finalist in Literary, Contemporary and Satire Fiction for the Somerset Award (2019).

“Common to all of my work is an abiding interest in the common struggles that make us human – loss, fear, hope, uncertainty, connection, separation, meaning, seeking, questioning, love, guilt, wonder, joy and storytelling,” Seaburn said. “I think we are all storytellers. That is how we make sense of our lives and the world around us. When I write, I feel that more than anything else, I am trying to make sense of life, trying to explore its meaning. And, of course, I am trying to tell a good story in the process.”

Seaburn lives in Spencerport with his wife, Bonnie.

They have two married daughters and four grandchildren.

Amongst the faculty showing new choreography is James Hansen, whose “Stolen Dances” was created in collaboration with seven BFA students. The dance explores two compositional elements: how dancers’ placement on stage affects the design of space and how gesture can evolve into full-bodied movement.

Faced with some uncertainty as to what the fall semester would be like on the Brockport campus, Mariah Maloney looked to the great outdoors and created a new ensemble work, also featuring seven dancers. In this work, Maloney located her rehearsals outdoors in the forests and fields.

The piece was cultivated on the original lands of the Onöndowa’ga of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy, today referred to as Brockport. Through this process, she has not only created choreography for the stage but also captured dance on video as an integral companion piece.

Other faculty members showing dances they have recently made include Sankofa African Dance and Drum Ensemble artistic director Jenise Anthony and long-time Garth Fagan associate Nicolette Ferguson, who will be showing “This Is,” which is a result of this past summer’s Brockport Summer Dance program. Musicians Mohamed Diaby and Greg Woodsbie will also be collaborating on a new work.

RWC’s Johnson earns first-team All-ECC honors Joshua Johnson is a quick study.

Johnson did not start running competitively until five years ago, but has shown steady progress and become one of the key members of the Roberts Wesleyan College distance running program.

Johnson, a senior from Fredonia, finished fifth in the East Coast Conference Cross Country Championships on October 23 to earn first-team All-ECC honors as the Redhawks captured their seventh consecutive ECC title.

Johnson, who also competes in track and field for Roberts, carries a 3.84 GPA in biochemistry, and is the Roberts Wesleyan College Male Scholar Athlete of the Month for October.

He is also in the process of applying to doctor of pharmacy programs and hopes to have a career as a pharmacist.

Johnson took a few moments recently to discuss his athletic career, academic interests and his time at Roberts. The interview has been lightly edited for length and clarity.

How did you get started in running?

“I don’t have the traditional trajectory that most runners have. I played football up until my junior year of high school and then I got injured. At the end of the season, my head coach convinced me to run indoor track. I started indoor track thinking that I would be a sprinter, but I have no foot speed so that did not work out. I started trying out longer distance events. … I tried out the mile and I ran like five minutes flat the first time, and I progressively started getting better throughout the season. During the outdoor meet, I placed really well at our Super 8 meet and from there I just started to develop a love for the sport because everything that you put into this sport, you get back. … Then my senior year I faced the decision of playing football or running cross country and I chose cross country.”

You got off to a bit of a late start in the sport, how did you end up running in college?

“Originally, I was just looking at schools that interested me, but since I was just starting to take off in running and found out that I loved the sport, I decided to see if I could

continue in college and run at a competitive level. I emailed the coaches and filled out recruiting forms – at Roberts I filled out the prospective athlete questionnaire – and it just went from there.”

What is it like to be part of a college program with such tradition and history?

“I think it is just the team culture. Everyone on our team builds off of each other. It’s running, so you have bad days all of the time, and when we have bad days our teammates just lift us up. … Our culture is all about recovering for the next run. … It all kind of works together to make sure that we are all staying on task.”

What is your favorite course that you are taking right now?

“My favorite course right now is immunology. I really enjoy the chemistry courses – biochem, Joshua Johnson organic – and immunology is all of the chemistry behind your immune system and I just think that it’s fascinating. There is so much that goes into it and I think that it really proves that God exists.”

What has been the best part of your experience at Roberts?

“The Christian atmosphere and how welcoming everyone is.

When I first came here, I was nervous that since I wasn’t from a Christian background that people would be judgmental and that I wouldn’t fit in. Actually, it’s the complete opposite. Everyone is really open and they’re welcoming and you can relate to just about anyone on campus.”

Brockport – Linda L. Torok, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on October 22, 2021, at age 86. She was born in Debrecen, Hungary, July 17, 1935. Linda is predeceased by her husband and love of her life Joseph. She is survived by sons Gary and Peter (Kathryn); grandchildren Andrew, (Jessica) and Christopher & David; great-grandchildren Lucy & Nicholas; her younger sister Judy and her daughters Anita and Cathy from Canada; along with other family in Hungary and many friends. He worked in Afghanistan at the Kandahar Airforce Base, in the green zone in Iraq, and on the oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. He loved his work and enjoyed helping people and being out on the water in his boat.

Per Bill’s wishes, there will be no Calling Hours or Funeral Services. There will be a Celebration of Life in the future. by Dave Crumb, Parma-Hilton Historian After a 20-year absence, the New York State Historical marker that was lost during a construction project was replaced in front of the historic property at 286 South Avenue (Route 259) in Hilton.

Hilton Mayor Joe Lee, property owner Liz Gliszczynski, and Parma-Hilton Historian Dave Crumb were on hand for the

unveiling of the sign that marks the site that Jonathan Underwood settled in 1805, becoming the area’s first settler.

Underwood’s log cabin and 100-acre farm (lot 1 range 5) was the first to be developed in the area that later became known as Unionville and, subsequently, Hilton. The farm went north to Salmon Creek and included the shopping district, homes on Hillside Drive, the Hilton Water Tower, and other recent housing developments.

On Wednesday, November 10, Spencerport’s Canal View Elementary School invited local veterans and members of the Ferris Goodridge American Legion to attend a showing of the work students put into commemorating the poppy, which is associated with veterans of all wars and conflicts.

Shelley Remillard initiated the various programs at the request of the Legion Auxiliary’s poppy committee. Upon her retirement, art teacher Debra Rogala took the proverbial ball and ran with it.

OFC Creations Theatre Center will present Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera from November 19 to 21.

The musical tells the story of a masked figure who lurks beneath the catacombs of the Paris Opera House, exercising a reign of terror over all who inhabit it. He falls madly in love with an innocent young soprano, Christine, and devotes himself to creating a new star by nurturing her talents and employing all of the devious methods at his command.

The production features 40 high school students from schools across Rochester, under the direction of Eric Vaughn Johnson.

Children’s picture book “Greetings from Brockport” published Author signing at Lift Bridge on November 27 Author Colleen Venturino recently published Greetings from Brockport with illustrator Katarina Stevanovic.

The children’s picture book follows a young family as they explore sites around the village. Local scenes shown in the book include the Lift Bridge, Erie Canal, numerous Main Street locations, the library, parks, and many others. The illustrator used photos and detailed descriptions provided

by Venturino to create the illustrations.

Venturino says, “I am so pleased with the adorable watercolor illustrations of Brockport. Katarina did a fantastic job and kids will love seeing familiar places come alive in this book.”

A Geneseo resident, the author has written several other books highlighting local hometowns – with two written as gifts to her grandchildren because of their connection to those towns. At the urging of friends and co-workers, Brockport was suggested to the author as a focus for a book because of its hometown pride, kid-friendly culture, and great downtown.

With a postcard feel, the back of the book reads: “Greetings from Brockport, New York! Brockport is a fantastic Eric Canal town. The people are SO friendly, the history is amazing, and there are so many fun things for kids to do! Read this book with your little ones as we visit places that make Brockport so special. See you soon!!”

Copies of the book will be available at Lift Bridge Book Shop beginning on Tuesday, November 23. An Author Signing will take place at Lift Bridge Book Shop on Small Business Saturday, November 27, from 10 a.m. to noon.

The following proposition will be submitted for voter approval at said meeting: PROPOSITION Shall the following resolution be adopted to wit: Resolved that the Board of Education of the Brockport Central School District is hereby authorized to undertake certain capital improvements consisting of construction and reconstruction of existing school buildings and facilities, site improvements and the acquisition of certain original furnishings, equipment, and apparatus and other incidental improvements required in connection therewith for such construction and school use, all at an estimated maximum aggregate cost of $11,335,000; and to appropriate and expend from the existing capital reserve fund $2,300,000 for such costs, and that the balance of such cost, or so much thereof as may be necessary, shall be raised by the levy of a tax to be collected in annual installments, with such tax to be offset by state aid available therefor; and, in anticipation of such tax, debt obligations of the school district as may be necessary not to exceed $9,035,000 shall be issued.

NOTICE IS HEREBY FURTHER GIVEN that the text of the aforesaid proposition may appear on the ballot labels in the following abbreviated form: PROPOSITION Shall the proposition set forth in the legal notice of this special voter meeting, authorizing construction, reconstruction and equipping of existing school buildings and facilities, site and incidental improvements, all at an estimated maximum aggregate cost of $11,335,000; with the expenditure of $2,300,000 from the existing capital reserve fund for such costs, the issuance of not to exceed $9,035,000 of debt obligations of the School District therefor, and the levy of a tax in annual installments therefor, with such tax to be offset by state aid available therefor, all as more fully described in said notice, be approved?

The School District, acting as lead agency under the State Environmental Quality Review Act and the applicable regulations promulgated thereunder (“SEQRA”), has completed its environmental review and, on October 19, 2021, has duly issued a negative declaration and has determined that the implementation of the unlisted action as proposed will not result in any significant adverse environmental impacts.

AND NOTICE IS ALSO GIVEN that applications for absentee ballots to vote on the proposition may be applied for at the office of the School District Clerk. The BEST Education Foundation is a nonprofit organization under the leadership of a small group of highly dedicated community members committed to supporting students and teachers in the Brockport Central School District. At present, the Foundation Board consists of ten Board Members and the Board of Education President, Terry Ann Carbone, acting as a liaison to the district with the ongoing support and participation of Superintendent Sean Bruno.

The Foundation was established in 2014 as a 501c3 nonprofit with the sole purpose of providing additional support to students and teachers through grants and scholarships. Examples of support include such things as the purchase of face masks, earbuds for remote learners in need, support for the building of a nature trail, the summer bookmobile, French Club field trips, and the Washington trip for 8th graders, as well as support for students with financial need taking the AP Exams.

Funds have been raised through “Farm to Table to Excellence” dinners at Kirby’s Farm Market, payroll deductions from committed employees of the district, and generous donations from community members and local businesses. At this time, we would like to expand opportunities for community involvement in, and support of, the BEST Education Foundation.

We have created a new, valuable group called “BEST Friends.” BEST Friends can join us as volunteers on specific projects (e.g., Farm to Table Dinner) and/or as official members of the Foundation by paying dues of $20.00 per year. It is our hope that there are members of the community who would be interested in becoming BEST Friends and possibly, in the future, Foundation Board members.
