politically speaking Candidate: Eric Roth Churchville Village Trustee
I am running to serve the Village of Churchville on its Board of Trustees. I have had the privilege of serving the residents of Churchville on the Village Zoning Board since late 2011. I have also enjoyed raising my three children in the village since 2010. I would like to be able to serve in a more direct way. I have been privileged with an education in local government management, graduating from a master’s program from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, which ranks in the top 10 nationally in the field. “Why would you like to serve the village in this way?” you might ask. I have three responses to that question. First, I feel the duty to serve my community, and this is one area I feel I can do just that. Second, I want to see Churchville thrive. I plan to encourage innovation, building business, and community involvement. Finally, I would like to do these things to make the village better than I found it, presenting a village to future generations we can all stand behind and be proud of. I would appreciate any support you could provide on the March 18 election. Thank you again for the opportunity to run, and I look forward to serving you in this new endeavor. As candidate for the office of Churchville Village Trustee, I offer you, the voter, a proven record of community involvement, decision making and leadership. For the past thirty-seven years, the Village of Churchville has been home to my wife Carol and I, where we have had the pleasure of raising two wonderful children. Serving as your Village and Town Historian for many years has provided me with detailed knowledge of our past and present enabling me to make informed decisions for tomorrow. I also serve as Vice President of the Riga Newman Library Board of Directors, am a member of and past Board Director for the Churchville Lions Club, and a member of the Churchville Moose Lodge. In 2007, I received the distinquished Citizen of the Year award by the Churchville-Riga Chamber of Commerce. For my work as Chairman of the Bicentennial committee, I was awarded a “Certificate of Recognition” by the Monroe County Legislature. Previously, I have served as an appointed member and Chairman of the Village Zoning Board, where I developed new regulations which closed loop holes in our local zoning ordinances. I have also been a 30 year member of the Churchville Volunteer Fire Department, serving as Vice President, budget committee chairman and Explorer Post advisor. I am a firm believer in a fiscally responsible budget while maintaining high quality services, and if elected, I can assure you that my decisions will be based on research, an open dialog and a willingness to work hard. Thank you for your support.

cooling season. Ensure the filter is sized correctly, fitting snuggly. •Keep the outdoor unit clean: Keep coils free of debris by hosing off with light pressure. Any bushes or shrubs should be trimmed back away from the unit. •Let air flow: Maintain a reliable airflow to reduce moisture buildup which can lead to mold. Keep vents open. Similarly, keep internal doors open inside your home to maintain air flow. •Clean duct grills: Annually, clean the vents and grills at the opening of each duct in every room by lifting the grill out of the floor, wiping with a rag or vacuuming to remove dust and debris. •Keep condensate drain open: A stopped up condensate line can lead to expensive water damage. Keep the drain line clean and the drain tube open and clear to prevent backup.
The position as a Spencerport Village Trustee is of interest to me as a long time resident of the area. My family and I moved here thirty-five years ago and have been residents of the Village for more than half of that time. Having served on the Village Zoning Board for the last several years, I recognize the growth and development in Spencerport, as many changes have taken place. I also recognize the necessity of maintaining the high quality of services that the Village provides. I feel that it is important to control the above mentioned growth and development as it relates to the wishes of the residents, yet to work toward improvements that would benefit the Village as a whole. Thank you for your consideration. Michael T. Flavin Spencerport
Taylor Elementary students jump rope for AHA Students at Taylor Elementary School participated in their annual Jump Rope for Heart event on February 5 to raise funds for the American Heart Association. Students more than surpassed their original goal of $12,000, by actually raising $13,500 for the AHA. This achievement also meant that by meeting the goal, physical education teacher Amy Nesbitt would dye her hair pink. “I visited my hair dresser and have a vibrant new hue to my hair!” Nesbitt said. “I am very proud of the wonderful spirit of the kids at Taylor. We had every student in the building participate in Jump Rope for Heart that day, and they really showed what it means to work together to achieve a common goal.” Provided information

Suggestion -- Post some signs: Yield to school buses K. Catone’s letter in the Suburban News March 8 publication highlighted a problem for school buses accessing the Route 259 bridge in Spencerport. Would not post signs at both entrances to the bridge requiring other vehicles to yield the right-of-way any time a bus is either waiting or already on the bridge prove a solution to the problem? Obviously, other drivers do not recognize the difficulty for drivers on the buses. Information requiring yielding seems a simple but effective answer to the bottleneck which undoubtedly affects
not only the school bus drivers, but drivers behind the buses as well. At the same time, it is difficult to comprehend a bridge with a 12 ton limit on a State highway. Other drivers of larger vehicles must also be affected by the limit and the difficult approach to the bridge, especially coming from the north. Carolyn Y. Rickman Parma

Antiques and art discovery weekend features ‘Road Show’ elements An antiques and art discovery weekend will be held at The College at Brockport, Saturday and Sunday, March 21 and March 22, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days. No appointments are needed. The weekend offers everyone the opportunity to have their heirlooms and collectibles verbally analyzed and valued. The public can bring their objects and talk directly with one of nine specialized experts. A $5 fee will be charged per appraisal, at the door. Expert antique, art and collectible appraisers from The Antique Appraisers Road Show, located in Westerlo, NY, will hold the event at the Seymour Union Ballroom, which is located at Residence Drive, Building #22, on campus in Brockport. The Friends of Drake Memorial Library and the Brockport Foundation will host the event. Proceeds from the event will be used to directly benefit the Drake Memo-
rial Library at the College. “Benefits could include new materials, databases, exhibits, and special programs,” said Jamie L. Beers-Wilson in the Alumni Relations and Development Office. In addition to the appraisals, a presentation on buying, selling and appraising fine art will be given by Walter Bazar, an expert in 19th and 20th century painting. Colin Fraser, the former head of Christie’s stamp department will offer a presentation and discussion on stamps. Start times for the talks will be at 1 p.m. on both days. This is the sixteenth road show held in New York state in the past four years. It will be in the Rochester and Brockport area for the first time. For information about the appraisal day, visitwww.facebook.com/gotoroadshow, or call (518) 242-0858. Maps and driving directions can be found on the Facebook page.

Hilton Firemen’s Carnival changes dates, expands for 2015 by Grace Griffee People come from all around to attend the Hilton Firemen’s Carnival, one of the area’s largest. Traditionally held the last week in July, this year’s carnival will move to July 15-18 due to a change in vendor. “We were at a point where we were starting to get complaints from the public and knew we had to do better,” said Mark Kalen, carnival co-chair. The Carnival Committee started looking for a new vendor two years ago. “There aren’t a lot of vendors who can do a carnival that’s not the size of a state or county fair” said Kalen. “It took us a long time to find one that had the quality of rides and attractions we were looking for.” After searching the east coast and meeting with multiple vendors, the committee decided on Gillette Shows from Pittsfield, MA. “It’s a family-owned and operated business, and to say they take good care of their rides is an understatement,” said Ryan Hess, carnival co-chair. In business for over 60 years, Gillette Shows will operate a minimum of 21 rides and 14 games at the Hilton Carnival, including a giant Ferris wheel, classic carousel and the popular Air Force One. “I think the community will be happy with the change,” he added. However, a change in vendor also means a change in date for the event. “It wasn’t a decision we took lightly,” said Kalen. “But the committee felt it was worth the risk to change the date and upgrade as opposed to keeping the same date and seeing the carnival further deteriorate.” The Hilton Fire
Restaurant & Catering Company
Department supported the decision. As a volunteer organization, the carnival is an important fundraising event for the department. In fact, they began raising funds back in 1901 with an annual Field Day, which was expanded into a three-day carnival in 1930, and became the Firemen’s Fair in 1950. In more recent years the event was renamed the Hilton Firemen’s Carnival and it became a fourday event. “The carnival keeps our volunteer ambulances on the road,” said Kalen. “Ambulance rides are free to the community and the carnival allows us to do that.” While 95 percent of the funds raised through the carnival go toward Emergency Medical Services, the remainder pays for the annual volunteer banquet and shirts for volunteers. The carnival also supports local not-forprofit organizations that run food stands during the four-day event. While organizations need to apply for a space, the fire department does not charge for the space or take a cut in sales. As for ticket prices, they will remain the same this year. “We’re proud that we’ve been able to keep this a family-friendly event and give the community more bang for their buck,” said Hess. For other information, visit the 2015 Hilton Fire Department Carnival on Facebook and look for Carnival advertisements in coming months in Suburban News and Hamlin-Clarkson Herald newspapers.

Bridie gives much of the credit for the success of her business to her staff - a group of six or seven who have totaled up a century of experience. “It’s to their credit that they stayed so long,” Bridie says, and notes the staff continues to do an amazing job every day, “They are so great to work with,” she adds. She notes another important aspect of McGinnity’s success is that so much of the work was done “in-house.” “My husband did the repairs and remodeling, we didn’t need a serviceman. I worked in the day and he was here every night. We’ve always been here,” she explains. In 2010, Bridie applied for and received a grant from the City of Rochester to remodel the exterior of McGinnity’s. She made all the decisions during the construction
process, meeting with contractors, architects and construction workers. She says the business has had to adjust over the years with the loss of Kodak employees and competition from fast food chain restaurants at the nearby Rt. 390 interchange, but McGinnity’s has, “made other arrangements to make it work.” There are now dart leagues and a poker club which meets on Thursday. Irish dancers - both youngsters and adults - meet at McGinnity’s on Mondays and Wednesdays. “There are a lot of things going on week after week,” Bridie says and observes that there is still a lot of traffic on Ridge Road. She is grateful to be in good health and looks forward to many more years in business. “I’ve still got some more miles,” she says enthusiastically, “I don’t feel like giving up.”

Adequate Insurance Coverage It is important to keep your homeowners insurance policy current by updating and increasing its value as you change, modify, or make additions to your home. The building block of any homeowner's insurance policy is the amount of coverage on the house and its contents. This figure should be based on the replacement value or what it would cost to rebuild the structure. The replacement value often changes over the years. Insuring for less than the full value is false economy, and refers to valuation no longer available on most policies. Nearly all insurance companies now require homeowner's policies to be insured at 100% of actual replacement cost in order to cover a loss completely. Most companies also offer at least "extended replacement cost" to cover inflationary cost increases for construction and the added costs of loss clean up. Choosing an inflation guard clause for your policy that automatically raises your coverage in step with rising prices is another way you can protect yourself. You should evaluate your insurance coverage based on the value of your house and contents at least every two years to make sure that you are adequately covered.
