Hilton Firemen’s Carnival changes dates, expands for 2015 by Grace Griffee People come from all around to attend the Hilton Firemen’s Carnival, one of the area’s largest. Traditionally held the last week in July, this year’s carnival will move to July 15-18 due to a change in vendor. “We were at a point where we were starting to get complaints from the public and knew we had to do better,” said Mark Kalen, carnival co-chair. The Carnival Committee started looking for a new vendor two years ago. “There aren’t a lot of vendors who can do a carnival that’s not the size of a state or county fair” said Kalen. “It took us a long time to find one that had the quality of rides and attractions we were looking for.” After searching the east coast and meeting with multiple vendors, the committee decided on Gillette Shows from Pittsfield, MA. “It’s a family-owned and operated business, and to say they take good care of their rides is an understatement,” said Ryan Hess, carnival co-chair. In business for over 60 years, Gillette Shows will operate a minimum of 21 rides and 14 games at the Hilton Carnival, including a giant Ferris wheel, classic carousel and the popular Air Force One. “I think the community will be happy with the change,” he added. However, a change in vendor also means a change in date for the event. “It wasn’t a decision we took lightly,” said Kalen. “But the committee felt it was worth the risk to change the date and upgrade as opposed to keeping the same date and seeing the carnival further deteriorate.” The Hilton Fire Department supported the decision. As a volunteer organization, the carnival is an important fundraising event for the department. In fact, they began raising funds back in 1901 with an annual Field Day, which was expanded into a three-day carnival in 1930, and became the Firemen’s Fair in 1950. In more recent

cooling season. Ensure the filter is sized correctly, fitting snuggly. •Keep the outdoor unit clean: Keep coils free of debris by hosing off with light pressure. Any bushes or shrubs should be trimmed back away from the unit. •Let air flow: Maintain a reliable airflow to reduce moisture buildup which can lead to mold. Keep vents open. Similarly, keep internal doors open inside your home to maintain air flow. •Clean duct grills: Annually, clean the vents and grills at the opening of each duct in every room by lifting the grill out of the floor, wiping with a rag or vacuuming to remove dust and debris. •Keep condensate drain open: A stopped up condensate line can lead to expensive water damage. Keep the drain line clean and the drain tube open and clear to prevent backup.

years the event was renamed the Hilton Firemen’s Carnival and it became a fourday event. “The carnival keeps our volunteer ambulances on the road,” said Kalen. “Ambulance rides are free to the community and the carnival allows us to do that.” While 95 percent of the funds raised through the carnival go toward Emergency Medical Services, the remainder pays for the annual volunteer banquet and shirts for volunteers. The carnival also supports local not-forprofit organizations that run food stands during the four-day event. While organizations need to apply for a space, the fire department does not charge for the space or take a cut in sales. As for ticket prices, they will remain the same this year. “We’re proud that we’ve been able to keep this a family-friendly event and give the community more bang for their buck,” said Hess. Volunteers read to students to mark Agricultural Literacy Week in March In celebration of National Agricultural Literacy Week, March 16-20 volunteers throughout the state will read a book with an agricultural theme to second graders. In Genesee County over 40 volunteers will be visiting and reading at schools throughout the county. The book will be given to the school library with a bookplate recognizing the donor and NY Ag Literacy Week. This year’s book is Weaving the Rainbow, written by George Ella Lyon and illustrated by Stephanie Anderson. It is a story which blends agriculture and art. A young woman raises sheep, shears them for their wool, cleans and cards the wool, spins and dyes the wool, ultimately using it to create beautiful works of woven art from the fiber. The story will help students begin to make the connection between agriculture and its many uses and influences. The focus this year is on fiber production in New York state from sheep, goats, llamas, alpacas, rabbits and others. Last year, 1,400 books were donated statewide while thousands of students participated in educational activities. B-B students recognized for contributions to community The Byron-Bergen Jr./Sr. High School Collaborative Improvement Team, comprised of teachers, students, community members, and Board of Education representatives, present a “School-Community Partnership Award” every semester recognizing students for their contributions to the Byron-Bergen community. This special award was created in an effort to highlight students who choose to “go the extra mile,” therefore distinguishing them as “ambassadors” in the school community. Whether it is volunteering, mentoring, coaching, or some other action inside or outside of the classroom, these students have demonstrated concern for others. The Collaborative Improvement Team received several nominations for the 201415 first semester awards and recognized

junior Aaries Fitzsimmons and senior Danny Khomitch. Aaries has a “heart of gold” and volunteered a great deal of time at the 6th annual Christmas Angel Festival which is a fundraiser to benefit Genesee Cancer Assistance. Always seen with a smile on her face, Aaries enjoys dancing and helping her dance instructor teach the younger students. Danny is captain of the Wrestling Team and has been a role model and leader to other wrestlers. Danny’s actions have made a positive impact on his peers, pushing them to do well and make good decisions. Grant awarded for feasibility study for 60 Clinton Street property The Greater Brockport Development Corporation has been awarded a New York State Technical Assistance Grant of $19,000 for the purpose of developing a feasibility study for 60 Clinton Street. The feasibility study will encompass a basic market analysis, building site analysis, marketing and funding opportunities as well as a market brochure. At the present time the Greater Brockport Development Corporation is seeking Request for Professional Services for the purpose of fuffilling the grant specifications. Completion of the grant is scheduled for the end of October. The Greater Brockport Development Corporation purchased the building at 60 Clinton for the purpose of rehabilitation

and restoration. Last year the structure at 60 Clinton received a tax abatement from the Brockport Central School District and also from the Village of Brockport. The corporation is anticipating that with the completion of the grant and with the tax abatements that it will be able to restore the structure to more modern use and to spur the growth of the Clinton Street business district. Westside Challenger Baseball registration open Westside Challenger Baseball will enter its fifth season for all area youngsters in Western Monroe County, Orleans and Genesee counties who have physical and/or developmental disabilities and would like to experience baseball that is structured to their needs. Children ages 5 through 18 can participate in a fun, family atmosphere and they will even have a buddy to assist them when needed. There is no cost to any family to have their child play due to sponsorship from area businesses, service organizations and private donations. Players will receive a hat and jersey, trophies at end-of-season family picnic, food and drink after each game and free tickets for players and family to attend a Rochester Red Wings game. The fundamental goal of Challenger Baseball is to give everyone a chance to play. To realize that goal, Challenger has two basic rules: every player bats each inning, and every player plays the field.

Challenger Baseball participants learn not only the fundamentals of baseball, but also experience pulling together as a team, being cheered on by a crowd, and being encouraged by their peers. Players have also been invited to play in June at the Challenger Baseball World Series at Frontier Field, the home field for the Rochester Red Wings. The registration deadline is April 20. She notes another important aspect of McGinnity’s success is that so much of the work was done “in-house.” “My husband did the repairs and remodeling, we didn’t need a serviceman. I worked in the day and he was here every night. We’ve always been here,” she explains. She says the business has had to adjust over the years with the loss of Kodak employees and competition from fast food chain restaurants at the nearby Rt. 390 interchange, but McGinnity’s has, “made other arrangements to make it work.” There are now dart leagues and a poker club which meets on Thursday. Irish dancers - both youngsters and adults - meet at McGinnity’s on Mondays and Wednesdays. “There are a lot of things going on week after week,” Bridie says and observes that there is still a lot of traffic on Ridge Road. She is grateful to be in good health and looks forward to many more years in business. “I’ve still got some more miles,” she says enthusiastically, “I don’t feel like giving up.”

Â More than 900 gymnasts represented 26 gymnastics clubs in the Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s International 2014 Nickel City Classic held in West Seneca February 6-8 where Bright Raven Gymnastics of Gates earned one first place and five second place team awards with several team members winning individual all-around honors. Legal Notice Town of Sweden Permissive Referendum Reducing the Number of Sweden Town Justices From Three (3) to Two (2) WHEREAS, the position of Sweden Town Police Justice was created by a New York State legislative enactment, chapter 34 of the Laws of 1899, passed and becoming law on February 28, 1899 (a copy of which is attached hereto as Exhibit “A”); and WHEREAS, the aforesaid law having been amended by New York State legislative enactment in chapter 123 of the Laws of 1899, passed and becoming law on March 23, 1899 (a copy of which is attached hereto as Exhibit “B”); and WHEREAS, reference is hereby made to People Ex Rel. Holmes v. Lane, Appellate Division Fourth Department, 53 App. Div. 531 (1900), a case dealing with, among other things, the abolishment of the Brockport Village Police Justice Office, the above noted legislation and related jurisdictional issues (a copy of which is attached hereto as Exhibit “C”); and WHEREAS, the Sweden Town Justice Court is currently presided over by Sweden Town Police Justice Mark Depferd, Sweden Town Justice Robert P. Connors and Sweden Town Justice Kevin G. Johnson; and WHEREAS, the current term of office for Sweden Town Police Justice Mark Depferd expires on December 31, 2015; and WHEREAS, the Sweden Town Board has investigated and reviewed whether the continuation of said Sweden Town Police Justice position and/or the continuation of having three (3) presiding Justices over the Sweden Town Court is necessary and effective; and WHEREAS, it being recognized that the Village of Brockport has established a Brockport Village Justice Court, independent of the Sweden Town Court, and presided over by justices other than those identified hereinabove; and WHEREAS, the Sweden Town Board has determined that it would be in the best interests of the Town of Sweden to reduce the number of Town Justices from three (3) to two (2) in that there is presently no need for three (3) Justices to handle the volume of matters in the Sweden Town Court; and WHEREAS, the Town of Sweden is a Town of the first class subject to the provisions of Town Law §60-a(2) stating in sum or substance that in the event the Town Board determines that it would be in the best interests of the Town, such Town Board may, by the adoption of a Resolution, subject to permissive referendum, reduce the number of Town Justices; and

•Hochreiter, Gerald E., former Director of Career and Technical Education of Monroe 2 - Orleans BOCES, died unexpectedly at home on March 5, 2015. Gerald was born in Buffalo, NY, son of Margaret MacVicar. Gerald received an associate degree from Erie Community College, bachelor’s degree from Buffalo State, master’s degree from The University of Albany and his Certificate of Advanced Study from Syracuse University. Before retiring in April 2002, Gerald had a thirty-three year career in public education, working exclusively in the Career and Vocational Field in BOCES statewide. In addition, Gerald served as an adjunct professor, student teacher, advisor, consultant and writer. Gerald is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Joanne; daughter JoEllyn H. Mangano of Clarence; sons, Gerald E. Hochreiter of Williamsville and Joseph E. Hochreiter of Cortlandt Manor; daughterin-law, Kerry Hochreiter; and grandchildren Anthony, Olivia and Michael Mangano; mother, Margaret Mac Vicar; sister, Marie Hochreiter, both of Kenmore; and many extended family. A Mass in celebration of his life was held March 13 at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, Kenmore, NY.
