Long time Parma resident participates in Honor Flight WWII recognition by Joe Reinschmidt On September 26 Honor Flight - Mission 44 left Rochester with a full compliment of Veterans including 29 who had served during WWII. Among them was Anthony “Tony” Zamiara who had lived for many years at 5162 Ridge Road and later downsized to a home at 1909 North Union Street. Due to health issues Tony now resides at Hamilton Manor where his wife, Janet, also lived until her death earlier this year. When asked about his experience on the trip to Washington, D.C. Tony said, “It was amazing, really special and rewarding.” As usual, each Veteran received accompaniment by an escort, which for him was his son Tony Jr. Tony spent his service time in the Army from 1942-1945. His unit assisted the Coast Guard in unloading supplies delivered to Guadalcanal. On January 29, 1945 while being unloaded, the Serpens, a Coast Guard ammunition supply ship exploded, killing the entire crew of 250 and also 20 of the men part of Tony’s Army company. A special memorial for the Serpens was erected and can be visited in Arlington National Cemetery.
Tony and his son were equally surprised and appreciative of the many individuals and groups who lend their assistance to these visits. They include Scout Troops, active military units, motorcycle escort groups, church groups and citizens in general. One memorable event was the greeting they received from former Senator Robert Dole who makes it his mission to greet every honor flight group at the WWII Memorial. The usual itinerary for groups include a visit to all of the various monuments as well as Arlington National Cemetery. The fact that all expenses for the Veterans were paid surprised Tony who explained that, “I couldn’t spend a dime for anything.” While the visit to Washington was more than expected, the best had yet to come when upon arrival back at the Rochester airport where they received greetings by hundreds of people again representing a variety of organizations and groups showing their appreciation for the services and sacrifices the Veterans made. As Tony Jr. expressed, “There was hardly a dry eye in the group” when they entered the airport reception hall.

Hilton High School hosts 36th Annual Model United Nations Conference Buses from 28 school districts as far away as Syracuse and Ithaca rolled up to Hilton High School on a Friday afternoon so over 600 students could participate in the 36th Annual Hilton Model United Nations Conference on November 6 and 7. The student-directed event provides debate opportunities for both new and experienced high school delegates. Students chaired 18 different committees based on actual UN committees that debate proposals, present position papers and vote on resolutions. Schools select the country/countries they want to represent and delegates prepare before the conference by researching that country’s stand on issues and current problems. Delegates take an active role in committee representing their country while following parliamentary procedures. In addition to being an opportunity to learn and collaborate with students from other schools, Model UN raises funds for charity. Students sell carnations and compete in “Jar Wars” to see which committee can raise the most money for a charity selected by the keynote speaker. This year’s recipient is The International Committee of the Red Cross, a private humanitarian agency that works to protect human life and health, ensure respect for all humans and prevent and alleviate human suffering. This year’s conference theme was Humanitarian Aid, one of the most important missions of the United Nations and the Red Cross. Delegates debated about humanitarian aid in all its forms from protecting the
rights of refugee children to basic sanitation to holding aid-givers accountable when aid is corrupted or misappropriated. Principal Brian Bartalo addressed the students during the opening ceremonies by quoting Thích Nhat Hanh, a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, teacher, author, poet and peace activist, “There is no true well-being that does not consider the well-being of others.” “You are the future caretakers of a more peaceful and just world,” he told the delegates. “You realize that other people with their differences can also be right and can work together to find creative solutions,” said Bartalo. This year’s keynote speaker was Ralph Boyd, chief executive officer of the Massachusetts Red Cross. Boyd has nearly a decade of humanitarian service through leadership roles with organizations, including the American Association of People with Disabilities and Easter Seals. He served as assistant attorney general on September 11, 2001. “After the events of 9-11, I functionally became assistant secretary of state managing the intersection between counter terrorism strategies and human rights,” said Boyd. Hilton teacher Annette Wattie has coordinated the Conference for the past six years. Prior to that, Robert Phillips, a retired Hilton teacher, and his wife, Mary, also a retired Hilton teacher, ran the conference for over 30 years and now Phillips is in charge of the United Nations Association of Rochester Conference held in March at St. John Fisher College. The seasonal flavors of fall are so wonderful and welcome and linked to garden and farm fruits and produce: pumpkin spice, apple and cranberry are a few. I love cranberries and look forward to their starring role in both savory and sweet recipes during the holidays and through the winter. We often associate cranberry growing with the bogs of New England, but cultivation is not limited to that area alone. During my family’s annual road trip during the summer to Minnesota, we pass through the cranberry growing region of Wisconsin. The fields (bogs) are visible from the highway and cranberry cheddar is a popular item at the numerous cheese shops. It is very possible to grow your own cranberries at home. The only reason cranberries are grown commercially in bogs, is because they are most easily harvested by flooding the fields - a process which allows the low-growing berries to float. The crop is then picked with a unique style of mechanical harvesting. Cranberries (Vaccinium macrocarpon) are native to North America and are typically found growing naturally in boggy areas because of their affinity for moisture and highly acidic soil. They are very low-growing, reaching only about four inches in height with thin stems. Cranberries bear their bright red fruits in the fall. I’ve been reading up about planting cranberries in a home garden. Lee Reich, Ph.D., author of “Landscaping with Fruit,” recommends that it is best to create a special raised bed for cranberries and incorporate lots of peat moss to provide soil texture and organic matter that the plants need. Acidify the soil with sulfur - cranberries prefer a soil pH between 4 and 5.5. Fertilizer should be used sparingly, and make sure the area is well watered. Droughts can kill cranberry plants. Garden catalogs are a good source for cranberry plants. Just a few plants, when happy with their growing conditions, will spread to form a mat, or ground cover. If you have acidic soil conditions, cranberries can make an interesting ground cover for landscaping purposes. Cranberries come from the same genus as blueberries and lingonberries – both of which love acidic soil conditions. My soil tests to the other end of the pH scale, so I know I would need to do some major soil amending to get cranberries to grow.
Life is just a bowl of … cranberries - especially during the holidays! K. Gabalski The plants are evergreen, but leaves take on a purple tinge in the winter and are very cold hardy, requiring a cold winter to be productive. According to the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners website, cranberries should be harvested before the first frost and will continue to ripen in a warm, dry place for several weeks. The berries can then be put in the freezer without blanching, retaining much of their nutrition when preserved this way. As you plan and dream about the upcoming growing season during these “off” months, you might want to consider giving this deep red and nutritious berry a try.

Help Check Out Hunger at home The Rochester region opens its hearts and wallets at the grocery store thanks to an important fundraising campaign. Foodlink and Wegmans Food Markets are once again partnering for the annual Check Out Hunger. The point of sale fundraiser allows Wegmans shoppers to add money onto their grocery bill as a donation to the regional food bank. Customers can add a $2, $3 or $5 donation or they can round up their bill. Check Out Hunger is Foodlink’s largest fundraising campaign. Last year, Wegmans shoppers donated nearly $695,000 to support Foodlink and its dozens of food-related programs that address the root causes of hunger. For every dollar donated to Foodlink, 97 percent goes directly to its programs. This
adherence to good governance recently earned Foodlink its 7th consecutive 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, the nation’s premier charity evaluator. According to Charity Navigator, only 2 percent of charities nationwide have received this achievement six years in a row. “We are grateful for the generous support of Wegmans and Wegmans shoppers during this critical fundraising campaign,” said Julia Tedesco, Executive Director of Foodlink. “In the current economic environment, we are proud to demonstrate to our supporters that we are good stewards with every dollar donated.” Check Out Hunger runs until November 28 at the 21 local Wegmans stores. Phase V Capital Improvement Project up for vote at C-C School District Churchville-Chili Community, I am excited to let you know that the C-C School District will present a Phase V Capital Improvement Project vote on December 8. As you may recall, we created an advisory committee comprised of community members, parents, and staff and student volunteers to discuss the senior high school pool, current stadium field and possible synthetic turf, the stadium track and upgrades in HVAC and windows in the middle school. The Phase V Capital Project Advisory Committee met in January and February to collect input from the larger community about the possibility of a new, larger pool and a synthetic turf field and new track at the stadium. Members of the advisory committee also visited newly-constructed pools at area schools. Athletic staff members were also involved in gaining and providing input around the athletic fields and facilities. Further, we traveled to Albany to meet with officials to discuss ways to maximize State financial aid for the project in an effort to maintain no additional tax impact for our community. All of the feedback was given to the Board of Education, who held several work ses-
sions over the last six months. The Board of Education approved the Resolution for a Phase V Capital Project at their September 22 meeting. The project total is $22,678,000 and will include: replacing our existing sixlane pool with an eight-lane pool; replacing the current track to include better drainage; replacing the grass field inside the stadium with synthetic turf and updating Middle School HVAC (select areas) and replacing windows in MS South. I want to thank the 30+ members of the advisory committee and the Board of Education for the countless hours that went into putting this project together. In addition, thank you to the numerous community members who shared feedback and ideas about this project via email and the District website. I hope you are able to attend one of the informational presentations listed on our website or attend the public hearing on November 24 at 7 p.m. at the Board of Education Meeting. You can view documents and information about the planning process for this project at www.cccsd.org/PhaseV. Lori Orologio Superintendent of Schools

Brockport wins first football title
Free range
by Warren Kozireski The Brockport Blue Devils have made the Section V football playoff semi-finals for the past six consecutive years, but this year was different. It turns out, very different. Instead of their season ending with a semi-final loss, this year they won defeating Greece Arcadia 16-7 to advance to the finals for the first time in program history. And then they won again, defeating second seed Canandaigua 28-7 at Sahlen’s Stadium to bring home their first Section V football championship. “It’s been a real long road, but we finally crossed that bridge,” game Most Valuable Player Cory Gross said. “It’s a great feeling and those seniors over there did a great job.” “We’ve been working since March to get to where we are right now and it just feels great to finally do what has never been done in Brockport football history before,” sophomore quarterback Ashton Scott said. The Blue Devils got on the scoreboard first after Shane Hogan intercepted a Braves pass attempt that was first tipped by linebacker Josh Keegan. A seven-play, 56 yard drive, including a key third down center screen to Austin Myers, was capped by three straight direct snap running plays out of the “wildcat” formation to the sophomore Gross - the last a three yard touchdown run. Cameron Fox’s extra point made it 7-0 Brockport. An early second quarter Canandaigua drive was stopped on fourth down in the red zone when Gross leaped to tip away a sure touchdown pass. Brockport capitalized on another Canandaigua turnover later in the second quarter when Jim Stone pulled the ball away from a Braves receiver with less than two minutes remaining in the first half.
The Blue Devils ran nine plays, including a fourth down conversion to Keenan, and capped the 62 yard scoring drive with an 18 yard touchdown pass from Scott to Antonio Alvarez. The Braves scored on their first possession of the second half to close in at 14-7, but again turned the ball over on their next possession as Raphael Odey intercepted and ran it all the way to the Canandaigua 19 yard line. Five plays later it was Gross again with a three-yard touchdown run on a direct snap to push the Blue Devils lead to 21-7. Canandaigua had their next drive stall early in the fourth quarter as Keegan came up with a fourth down tackle. And Stone intercepted another Braves pass on their next possession to set up the clinching score as Jon Yaeger scampered in from eight yards out to make it 28-7 Brockport. Gross finished with 88 yards rushing on 20 carries and Josh Keenan added 60 yards on the ground for Brockport. Scott was 9-of-19 passing for 119 yards while Odey and Jeremy Michaels combined for six receptions. The team scored on all four trips into the red zone. Defensive lineman of the game Tyler Johnson led the way on defense with eight solo tackles including three sacks. “Every year you think it’s going to happen and we get to semi-finals six years in a row and get over the hump and then we had a great performance after an awesome week of practice. It was just an awesome season for us,” Blue Devils head coach Scott Nugent said. “When we first took over 15 years ago we just wanted to be competitive. To finally take my alma mater to a Sectional championship is beyond anything I ever thought of.”

Rochester area students accepted to the Young Entrepreneurs Academy The University of Rochester and Downtown Rochester Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) classes kicked off with 44 motivated middle and high school students, with a drive to launch and run their own, real businesses. A competitive application process required students to complete an essay, write responses to short answer questions, submit their school transcripts and a letter of reference, and participate in an in-person admissions interview prior to acceptance into the program. Throughout the year, students will work in close cooperation with local business leaders, community leaders and entrepreneurs who use their personal experiences to demonstrate how to develop business ideas and objectives, write a business plan, pitch to investors, obtain funding, register
with governmental agencies, establish a web presence and more. By the end of the 30-week class, students launch, own and operate fullyformed and functioning businesses, which may be carried after their graduation from the program. YEA! University of Rochester Class of 2016 area members include: Michelle Nesbitt, Brockport High School; Jon Sanfratello, Churchville Chili High School; Nathan Swanson, Churchville Chili High School. The Young Entrepreneurs Academy is a national program offered for students in grades 6 to 12 by chambers of commerce, professional organizations, colleges and universities and public and private middle and high schools. Legal Notice Spencerport Central School District Notice to Bidders
Make a visit to the Emily Knapp Museum in Brockport The Emily Knapp Museum in Brockport became a venue of entertainment over the summer when organizers of the Class of 1960 High School reunion included the museum in a weekend of fun for graduates and guests. After a warm welcome from Sue Savard and other volunteers, our self-guided tour took us back to a time when Brockport was an integral part of world commerce by shipping goods manufactured in the town’s piano, shoe, button, and harvesting factories through the Erie Cnal. What a surprise it was to find an actual reaper among the harvesting equipment. Thousands of catalogued items are available as well as information about the original movers and shakers in town. My husband, a native of Brockport, found his connection to the Family Dairy. As a reunion guest and “import” to Brockport, my surprise was in finding a picture of my great-great grandparents’ Island Cottage Hotel as the host site for a number of Brockport company picnics. This museum is a treasure trove of life and requires no more than a drive into the Village of Brockport. This was the best trip I’ve had as a time traveler.

CREDIT CARD COMMON SENSE
Before a lender will approve your mortgage loan, you must have a good credit rating, enough money in the bank for the down payment and settlement costs, and a stable employment situation. People who have just qualified for a mortgage loan are usually in good financial shape. If you have just bought a new house don't be surprised if you receive a lot of offers from retail stores and other credit card companies offering you pre-approved revolving credit. Be careful about accepting too many of these offers! New homeowners often use most of their savings to buy their home. With all of the immediate credit available, it may be very tempting to just say, "charge it" to purchase new furniture or linens for the house and find yourself in debt very quickly. It takes discipline to reach the goal of home ownership-- and it takes that same kind of discipline to maintain financial health after you leave the settlement table. For professional real estate advice, give me a call, Mary Lobene at 352-8529.
