Gillett Road bridge over Erie Canal in Ogden now restricted to eight tons The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) announced November 7 that the Gillett Road bridge over the Erie Canal in the Town of Ogden is now restricted to vehicles weighing eight ton or less. The structure had been posted at 20 tons. An empty single unit vehicle (2 axles/6 tires) typically weighs six tons, according to the NYSDOT. The posting was put in place following a recent inspection and engineering analysis that revealed the bridge can no longer safely carry heavier traffic in its current condition, according to a press release. The duration of the weight restriction is not yet known. An assessment and plan will be developed, DOT representatives said. Provided information

One season after setting personal bests in goals, assists, points and penalty minutes, Spencerport native Shane Prince is in the early stages of his third professional season as a professional hockey player in Binghamton as part of the Ottawa Senators system. And in the final year of his original three-year entry level contract. But the goal of becoming a player in the National Hockey League hasn’t changed. “It’s a lot different coming into my third year than it was in my first or second, so there is definitely more pressure on me to step up and be a leader on this team,” Prince said after the game. “I thought I had a real good preseason; played in a couple of games and did well, so I just need to keep working down here and get back there as soon as I can. “As a scorer you’re always leaned on to help contribute offensively and if the team is losing and we’re not scoring goals, it’s on me to break through and score a couple. Prince, a second round draft pick by Ottawa in the 2011 entry draft, scored the third goal against the Rochester Americans in his trip home November 7 giving him two goals and three assists over the first nine games this season. He left home in 2008 at 16 years old to play junior hockey in Canada for first Kitchener and then Ottawa. One season after being drafted, he finished fourth in the Ontario Hockey League in scoring with 43 goals and 47 assists in 57 games.
The just-turned 22-year-old (Nov. 16) began his pro career in 2012-13 and he netted 18 goals in 65 games; then added 21 goals last season. “That’s one of those things that is out of my control. I just need to worry about my game. I thought I had a great season last year, a great camp and a pretty decent start to this year, so I’m looking to build on it.” If Prince is still in the American Hockey League, he will return to Rochester with Binghamton for a final time in this regular season on December 5.

Brockport fundraiser Nov. 21 organized for Pierson family by Kristina Gablaski A special fundraiser planned in Brockport on Friday, November 21, will help to support the family of Rochester Police Department Officer Daryl Pierson, who was killed in the line of duty September 3, 2014. Four Brockport-area police wives are organizing the event, a “Night of Giving: Brockport for Pierson” which will be held from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Taproom at Bill Gray’s Restaurant, 4647 South Lake Road, Brockport. Tamara Barrus, Lisa Ireland, Danielle Mesiti, and Caurie Putnam-Ferguson call themselves, “Police Wives for Pierson.” “I was only a police wife for four days when Officer Daryl Pierson was killed in the line of duty in Rochester,” says Caurie Putnam-Ferguson. Her husband, Eric, is an officer in the Rochester Police Department. Putnam-Ferguson says Mesiti, Ireland and Barrus are all friends who were at her wedding and were among the first to reach out and make sure she and her husband were OK following the death of Officer Pierson. “Having each other as support was so critical,” she says. “Within 24 hours we had decided we would do something for Daryl’s widow, Amy Pierson.” Amy was

left with two very young children - Christian and Charity. Bill Gray’s will donate 15 percent of all proceeds from food and drink orders during the “Night of Giving” event to Daryl’s widow and children. Purchasers need to identify themselves as a fundraiser attendee, organizers say. Putnam-Ferguson says she comes from multi-generation police family with many uncles and cousins in the New York Police Department. In 1964, her grandmother’s cousin, Detective James Donegan, NYPD, was killed in the line of duty responding to a domestic violence call. The 50th anniversary of his murder was recently observed and Putnam-Ferguson says she and her family are still affected by the loss. “It shows how deep and penetrating losing a police officer is to a family,” she observes. “Amy Pierson and her children have a long road ahead of them and this fundraiser is just one little way to support them on this horrible journey.” Danielle Mesiti’s husband, Stephen, is a sergeant with the Brockport Police Department. She, too, comes from a law enforcement family. “I grew up in a service-minded family,” she says. “It’s a huge sacrifice for families.” Continued on page 2

Fundraiser organized for Pierson family Continued from page one Law enforcement officers must put their duty first on a daily basis, Mesiti notes. “They are missing birthdays, family dinners, helping get the kids to bed.” Mesiti describes the law enforcement community as a remarkable group of people. “All of our hearts break for Amy,” she says. “We hope she feels the love and support coming from everybody. We really mean it from the bottom of our hearts.” Tamara Barrus’ husband, Tyler, is retired from the Monroe County Sheriff ’s Office. She says the fundraiser at Bill Gray’s is a way for residents on the west side of the city to reach out and help. “Everybody wants to do something to help,” she says and explains that wives of police officers are always aware that their husband’s lives are in danger on a daily basis. “You can’t let it over-run your life,” she says. “You don’t know what you would have done (if you had been Amy
Pierson). I would not want to be in her shoes.” Lisa Ireland’s husband is a New York State Trooper who is sometimes called out of town on assignments. “I know I’m a single phone call away from that being me,” she says of Amy Pierson. “You can’t live with it in the forefront of your mind, but it is always in the back of your mind. It never goes away.” She says wives of police officers have a special bond. “We are a sisterhood. There is a bond between us that will hold forever. We will do what we can to support (Amy) and her family,” Ireland says. She thanks Bill Gray’s for their efforts in making the fundraiser possible. “We want to fill that place,” she says of the Taproom. “Night of Giving: Brockport for Pierson,” will also include raffles and music. A photo booth will be provided by Encore Events.

Brockport firefighters support Wounded Warrior project Brockport firefighters have supported the New York Wounded Warrior Alliance for many years and this year is no exception. Each year, a reminder goes out to local firefighters coordinated by the Chili Fire Department to provide clothing, toiletries and things that might make a hospital stay for our wounded service men and women easier to take. And each year, volunteers from your Volunteer Firefighters Association in Brockport step up for the program.
This year, your firefighters donated over $1,000 in clothing and gift cards. “We are pleased to present our donation on Veteran’s Day to past Battalion Chief James Lechner from Chili Fire Department. This project is for the Vets and their families. We are proud to support those who serve all of us. It is part of what we do as volunteers,” said Association President Michael Corey as he presented the gift cards to Chief Lechner. Provided information

PROVIDING DIRECTION The profession of funeral director dates back many centuries and has played a very important part in the death rituals of many cultures. The need for funeral directors evolved with the growth of the mortuary industry in ancient Rome, which centered on cremation and elaborate rituals. In this country, the modern practice of embalming grew out of the necessity to deliver the preserved bodies of fallen Civil War officers to their families back home. Today’s funeral directors receive rigorous training and must complete a licensing procedure before they can begin to help families deal with death. Aside from funeral services, many funeral
directors help people adapt to changes in their lives following the death of a loved one. Funeral directors are trained to help families arrange the type of service they want. The service is held either at a place of worship or at the funeral home with the deceased present. It varies in ritual according to denomination. The presence of friends at this time is an acknowledgement of friendship and support. For more information, please call THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME at 585-392-7100. We are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day, and we are located at 735 East Avenue. Family owned and trusted since 1976.

Hilton students, community roll up their sleeves and pitch in to Make a Difference The Hilton School District and several community agencies recently joined together to sponsor the Seventh Annual Make a Difference Day. The largest national day of helping others through volunteerism, Make a Difference Day is always held the fourth Saturday in October. Hilton students were involved in projects throughout the community, including: collecting electronics for recycling; sorting and collecting food for Hilton-Parma Food Shelf; visiting and doing activities with residents at Hilton East; making flowers for chemotherapy patients; collecting used sporting equipment for kids in need; spon-
soring a blood drive; doing fall cleanup for senior citizens; working in a community garden that supplies the food shelf with fresh produce; and making cards to go in holiday food baskets. Volunteers gathered in the information cafeteria at Provided Hilton High School both before and after volunteering where they enjoyed breakfast and lunch donated by Wegmans. They also took a few moments to write personal thank-you notes to service men and women. A video of this year’s Make a Difference Day projects will be posted at Hilton.k12. ny.us soon.
I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the residents of Hamlin for electing me to represent you on the Hamlin Town Council. Thank you for the many ways in which you have supported me including voting, allowing me to place signs in your yards, and talking with me when I came to your doors. Let’s keep that dialogue going as community support and involvement are critical to the success of elected officials! I am proud to represent you and grateful for this opportunity. Thank you for believing in me. I’m looking forward to working hard for Hamlin.

Photographs and text by Walter Horylev Parma resident Henry Ross, 90-years-old and a veteran of the United States Army Air Force, shares a home with his sister-in-law Carol Starwalt on Peck Road in Parma. About a year and a half ago he moved up from Florida. On November 11, Veterans Day, he had just finished breakfast when Carol exclaimed: “Did you see what’s out front? You’ve got to see it!” In the front yard, close to the road, was a sign with a red, a white and a blue balloon on it. It read: “Thank you, Uncle Hank, and all Vets.” Henry added: “I walked out and I said: It makes me weepy-eyed. I didn’t expect any recognition; it was a total surprise. My neighbor Debbie Dean always calls me Uncle Hank so we suspected it was her doing.” And it was. Henry served with distinction. He was drafted in January 1943 and ended up in the 15th Army Air Force flying out of Italy. He was a radio-operator and waist gunner on a B-24 bomber. Henry actually flew 38 missions but was credited with 50 missions owning to especially dangerous flights made to bomb Ploesti, Munich, Vienna and several other targets. On one mission to bomb the Ploesti oil refineries their plane lost the use of two engines from mechanical problems and had to turn back. While being attacked by a German fighter plane, the plane was hit by a 20 mm shell and Henry ended up with a bloody nick in

After the 50 missions he was rotated back to the States and ended up in Air Transport Command in Reno, Nevada, as a flight instructor for radio operators. He was a Tech Sergeant when discharged in October 1945. Below: Ross is second from right bottom row.

Opinion/Comments Make every day Veterans Day As fall turns into winter, one cannot help but reflect on the changing of seasons. So, too, was the changing of the world in 1918. When the hostilities ceased at the 11th hour, of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 and the eventual signing of the Treaty of Versailles, the world was going to celebrate the ending of “the war to end all wars.” As we know now, “the war to end all wars did not last.” With the rise of Axis Powers, we were again at war. We were again called on to defend our freedom and those of other countries, against aggression in Korea, Vietnam, and Desert Storm and other conflicts of a smaller scale. We are now battling the War on Terror which is infiltrating our continent. As our guardians of freedom change from generation to generation, one thing remains constant. Our veterans will be ever vigilant and dedicated to protecting our freedoms. We will be forever indebted to our nation’s military veterans who have served, and are serving their country. As you walk or drive in Spencerport and you see a bumper sticker, a magnetic ribbon, a veterans service organization sticker on a vehicle, stop and thank that person for their
service or for their son’s or daughter’s service. A majority of American’s today have never known the commitment it takes to serve our nation As Veterans Day passes and before the snow arrives and the holidays approach, please take a moment to wander through Memorial Park across from Fairfield Cemetery on Route 259 in Spencerport. Look at the names on plates and silently thank them for their sacrifice. Look at the military banners hanging from our light posts in the Spencerport business district to see some of the sons and daughters serving their country. Say silent prayer for them serving where America needs them. If you know a family of a service member, thank them for sacrifices they make to support their loved one. Make every day Veterans Day, a day about paying respect to the men and women who serve and have served our country. Don Sisson, Commander Ferris Goodridge Post 330 Spencerport

Hamlin-Clarkson Herald and Suburban News West Edition - November 16, 2014 7
Sweden wraps up Bicentennial events with Dec. 13 Ball by Kristina Gabalski The Town of Sweden will wrap up its year-long 200th anniversary celebration with a festive Bicentennial Ball planned for Saturday, December 13, at 6 p.m. at the College at Brockport Seymour Union Ballroom. Bicentennial Committee members Alicia Fink, Patricia Connors and Marie Bell have been working to organize the event, which they say is black tie optional. A cocktail hour begins at 6 p.m. and includes a cash bar with hors d’oeuvres. The sit-down dinner will be served at 7:15 p.m. and includes grilled beef tenderloin and chicken breast, vegetables, potato and a dessert station. “It is a community event and we want the community to come,” Fink, Connors and Bell say. “It’s the holidays - it’s a nice time of year to get together and this, in some way, replaces the gala from Lakeside.” A vegan-vegetarian entree is available. Fink, Connors, and Bell say that if you would like the special entree, they should make that request when they purchase tickets. Tickets are $35 and are available through November 26 at the Sweden Town Hall and the Sweden/Clarkson Community Center. Music will be provided by “Nik and the Nice Guys,” and a photographer will be taking photos during the cocktail hour. The photographs will be available online following the event. Eleven-ounce souvenir wine glasses are included with the ticket price, organizers say. The glass features the Sweden Bicentennial logo. Fink, Connors and Bell say the year-long bicentennial celebration has been successful. “We’ve had so much fun,” Bell says, “We’ve had a really committed group.” The celebration began back in January and included special events each month. Those events included a re-enactment of the first Sweden Town meeting, a quilt show, a historical home tour, Old Home Weekend during the 4th of July, a barn tour and a cemetery tour. “We’ve had a very talented and organized group,” Alicia Fink adds, which included committee members who were, “committed to making every event successful.” For additional information regarding the Bicentennial Ball, call 637-2144.
Brockport Unitarian Universalist Fellowship welcomes interim pastor A SUNY Brockport alum returns “home” after 30 years to serve a local congregation at Brockport Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. “Who says ‘you can never go home again.’ ” says Rev. Lori Staubitz, who has come home in more ways than one. Raised in Hilton, she completed her bachelor of arts in therapeutic recreation at SUNY Brockport in 1978. She went on to obtain her masters of divinity at Virginia Union Rev. Lori Staubitz University and has served congregations in Austin, Texas; Richmond, Virginia and southern Maryland. Her work in religious leadership development includes both district and national service with the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations. When her husband, Ward, retired, the couple decided to return to western New York. Most recently, she was one of the First Universalist Church of Rochester’s ministers. She continues to be involved with city social justice initiatives as her ministry extends to the Montgomery Neighborhood Center where she joins local seniors (60+Group), to provide a holistic after school program for inner city children. She is an active member of the Brockport Women’s History Club and Brockport Interfaith Ministries. Brockport UUF meets in the Garland Methodist Church on Sweden Walker Road, just south of Ridge Road West.

Local Cheer Team heading to Disney - In only its seventh year, the Hamlin Hornets Youth Football and Cheerleading Organization have a co-ed Midget Cheer Team heading to Disney World to compete for Pop Warner’s National Championship. These young men and women range from ages 13 to 15 and come from several communities including Hamlin, Brockport, Clarkson, Hilton and Kendall. In order to attend the National Championship these young athletes need to maintain a certain grade point average in school. In addition to their schoolwork they also have six hours of practice a week since school started, so they work hard on academics as well as on the mat. They had an amazing score at the local competition that earned them first place and then repeated the regional competition in New Jersey for another first place finish. Now they have their eyes set on National Champions in Orlando, Florida during the week of December 9 through 14. The cheerleaders and coaching staff have been working very hard on fundraising, before and during the season. They have participated in a Yankee Candle Fundraiser; two “fill the megaphone” campaigns, bake sales and even stood out in front of Brockport WalMart for twelve hours selling candy bars. Fundraising is still going on, but it appears it won’t be enough to send this team of twenty-two cheerleaders and coaches to Disney. Those who would like to donate can also visit gofundme.com and search A Hornets Dream! to make a donation. This is a once in a lifetime dream for this group of talented young men and women. Provided information.
New York State Silver Gloves Boxing Tournament coming to Rochester New York State’s best junior aged boxers - 6 through 15 - meet December 6 and 7 at Wilson Foundation High School, 200 Genesee Street in Rochester for state championships and to take the next step towards a National Silver Gloves Championship at the Wilson Foundation High School. Most of the outstanding local boxers, including Robert “Pushup” Frazier and Willie Monroe, both National Silver Gloves champions, have come through this event. Local clubs include entries from host Rochester St. Martin, Fight for Life, Baden Street, ROC, and Future. Locals will be challenged by strong teams from New
York City, Buffalo, Syracuse, Albany and others. New York State Open Class champions will compete for Region 1 Championships January 3 and 4 in Utica versus state champions from Connecticut, New Jersey, and New England. Region 1 champions compete for national honors February 4 through 7 in Independence, Missouri. The action begins at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 6 and continues at 10 a.m. on Sunday, December 7. Admission is $10. The event is co-hosted with the Southwest Area Neighborhood Association and the Rochester St. Martin Boxing Club.
Genesee Country Museum gets into the holiday spirit First came the butchering, then the smoking, salting and curing meats, enough to last through the coming winter. That was followed by the rendering of lard or tallow from the animal fat for making soap and candles. Only after the root cellar was finally stocked was it time to cook, bake and decorate for the holiday feast. This 19th-century family endeavor is revived village-wide on Saturday, November 22, at Genesee Country Village & Museum in its program Preparing for the Holidays - the 19th-Century Way. Visitors can see and, at times, participate in the activities that will fill the historic village, everything from brewing beer to sausage stuffing. Included will be
butchering of a hog as well as the tasting of some of the food being prepared for the holiday meal. One of the village smoke houses will be in operation. Other activities abound in the village, including a separate program - Crafts at Christmas - that gives the entire family the opportunity to create a cranberry heart ornament, Mason jar tea light, Victorian potpourri bag, flowered ball ornament (or cupcake Christmas tree ornament) and Victorian decorated gift box. Cost of the craft program is $4 per craft or five for $15. The historic village will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on November 22. General admission is $9.50/$7.50 for youth 4-16. It is free to members and children 3 and under.
Spencerport Community Chorus performs Holiday Concert The Spencerport Community Chorus invites everyone to attend one of their Holiday Concerts to be presented on December 6 and 7, at the group’s new concert venue: Ogden Presbyterian Church, 2400 South Union Street on Route 259, just south of the 531 expressway. The church is handicapped accessible and provides seating and parking. Comprised of singers from Spencerport and surrounding communities, the chorus, directed by Margaret Page Colucci, has performed for 33 years.
Pieces performed will include “Slow Dancing in the Snow” by Jay Althouse, “African Alleluia” by Benjamin Harlan, “Riu, Riu, Chiu” by Linda Spevacek, “Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy” arranged by Jeff Funk and many others. Guest performers at both concerts will be members of the Amadeus Chorale. Concerts are free and provide a relaxing start to holiday festivities. For information call 352-6223. Provided information

Hamlin-Clarkson Herald - November 16, 2014 13
Interior Expressions shop owner named one of “25 Gifted Retailers” by Kristina Gabalski Barbara Miller is not exaggerating when she says her business - Interior Expressions by Design - has everything to make your house a home. The shop located at 1100 Long Pond Road (Suite 106) north of Ridge Road, is filled with an amazing selection of furniture, home decor, seasonal items, lighting - including candles - fashion accessories and gifts. Barb has been at her current location for three years, but that short time belies her decades of experience in the retail industry. “I managed The Apple Tree Gift Shop in Brockport,” Barb says, noting she has worked in retail for 35 years. Barb did a little bit of everything for The Apple Tree - buying, displays, selling - and when it closed, she enjoyed being a grandma full time. But the retail world still beckoned. Her years of experience had put her in touch with vendors and she also continued to be in touch with former customers.
With the support of her husband, Barb ventured into her own business with Interior Expressions nine years ago. “Once a retailer, always a retailer,” she says. The business was first housed in the craft/antique co-op in Hilton. Barb started with one little booth and the business grew. Moving to her current location was “the next logical step,” she says. Barb loves her Greece location in a small plaza just off busy Route 104. The plaza has lots of architectural charm and attractive landscaping - the perfect setting for the offerings of her shop. The first impression when entering the store is one of cozy, country furnishings and decorative accessories. Closer inspection reveals there is something for almost every taste - from primitive to traditional to contemporary. The variety of merchandise is amazing - and captivating - from sofas to earrings and large wooden hutches to funky change purses. “You have to have a mix to appeal to a lot of different tastes,” Barb says.
Look for an ecclectic blend of merchandise -- from cozy, country furnishings and decorative home accessories to jewelry and unique personal accessories -- at Interior Expressions. K. Gabalski photo.
She recalls one customer who came in and at first glance, thought the store’s offerings were not to her taste. After browsing, she changed her mind and went home with hundreds of dollars in merchandise. Barb says new customers visit every day. “The business has grown,” she says. “I’ve been blessed that way. A lot of businesses are struggling, especially in retail.” She is particularly proud of her faux floral offerings which change to match the seasons and which are different from those found in chain craft stores. Also available are a wide range of seasonal merchandise and garden-related items. The furniture Barb offers is all made in the USA - some by Amish craftsmen and upholstered pieces by Hallagan Fine Furniture, which has been manufacturing in nearby Newark, NY for more than 110 years. Hallagan offers hundreds of fabric and frame choices including contemporary. Barb explains her success is most likely due to making customer service a priority. She welcomes every customer to the store and is always ready to offer friendly advice when it’s needed. “It’s the rapport you build with the customer, making them feel special,” Barb says. “Every customer I have is special. I’m grateful for every purchase.” Customers seek her out from as far away as Buffalo, Syracuse, Elmira and Horseheads. She also makes an effort to give back to the community, particularly during Small Business Saturday when a portion of her sales go to the Mission Share Outreach Center in Greece. Her store is also getting some national attention via a trade publication. Barb and Interior Expressions by Design are featured in the November 2014 issue of Gifts and Decorative Accessories as one of the publication’s “25 Gifted Retailers 2014.” “I’m really honored by the recognition,” Barb says.
Opinion/Comments Change is inevitable At a recent Clarkson Town Board meeting, incentive zoning for the project known as Brook Field at Clarkson, bounded by Ridge Road, Sweden-Walker Road and East Avenue, was voted down. The question before the town is not IF something will be built, but WHAT will be built. The property was recently sold by the McCagg estate after owning it for well over 50 years. The property on the eastside of Sweden-Walker Road is also for sale and was in the McCagg family for nearly 100 years. Change may be scary, but it is inevitable. The town’s master plan calls for hamlet zoning at the Garland four corners. Hamlet zoning is homes and businesses clustered close together with multi-use buildings. The current zoning for the largest parcel in question would allow 65 single family homes. The homes built on Sweden-Walker and East would have backyards facing towards the roads as NYS and Monroe County will not allow individual driveways. The view one would see driving those roads would be peering into backyards, whereas the developer for Brook Field at Clarkson had designed the homes facing the frontage roads to be more esthetically pleasing and to resemble front yards. The parcel on the west end of East Avenue backing up to the Ridge Road mobile home park would have been a much-needed 85 unit senior complex. The Town has a provision in our code called Incentive Zoning. This allows the Town to negotiate with a developer to design a project in harmony with the town’s master plan. In return, the developer agrees to pay the town an upfront payment for concessions he needs. In this case, the developer early on agreed to a payment of $375,000 before any construction would

begin. This money would be exclusively used to preserve open space; construction, improvement and enhancement to town buildings and grounds including parks; preservation of cultural or historic facilities, and enhancement or preservation of the Clarkson Historical Overlay District. Negotiation means just that. Unfortunately, we only had one meeting with the developer as the project moved through the town to the Conservation Board. If there were portions of the project a majority of the board didn’t like, i.e. the apartments, I believe we should have had further negotiation with the developer before closing the door to development that would have benefited the entire community. Now whatever development happens there will not include a financial incentive for our taxpayers. Another concern was traffic on Sweden-Walker Road. Both NYS and Monroe County reviewed the project and recommended a left northbound left hand turn lane be installed on Sweden-Walker Road. This would have alleviated an existing problem at the evening rush hour. Without the turn lane, this problem will only continue to worsen with growth in the Town of Hamlin - no matter what alternative is built on this property. In closing, without smart growth in the town, the Town faces some serious choices. With limited growth, a poor economy and extremely low interest rates on investments, the Town will either have to increase property taxes or cut services. Neither is a desirable alternative. Please call or email the Town with your comments regardless of whether you support the project or oppose it. Clarkson needs to plan well for the future in order to best serve our residents. Paul Kimball, Supervisor Town of Clarkson
Need A New Tube?
You can pick one up at our office, 1776 Hilton-Parma Corners Road, Route 259, just north of Route 104 (Ridge Road). Look for the log cabin. Our hours are Monday-Thursday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Suggestion: If you are in a windy area, it would help if you put a piece of duct tape on the back of the tube to prevent the paper from blowing out.

Interior Expressions by Design is open Tuesday - Saturday from 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., Thursday evenings until 8. Closing the store on Sunday and Monday gives Barb time with her family (she has grandchildren and great-grandchildren) and also time to re-charge. “I’m fresh on Tuesday morning for another week,” she says. Fortunately for Barb, whether she’s at her house with family or at her warm and welcoming store, she’s always close to “home.”

Gaylord has been an active member of the Orleans County community. She was a foster parent for many years and is currently a member of the Clarendon Historical Society, assisting with grant writing efforts. After commuting to jobs in Rochester for more than 30 years, Gaylord says she is delighted to be working locally for such an important cause. “I’m very committed to rallying community support to ensure that Hospice of Orleans continues to be an independent local organization, not part of a large health system. Hospice services were there for my loved ones to help them reclaim control over their life and remain surrounded by family, friends and community as they faced an incurable illness. I look forward to helping ensure that Hospice services continue to be available locally for anyone who requests them.”

by Kristina Gabalski As I write this column, I’m still in the midst of end-ofseason yard and garden chores. I’ve got more bulbs to plant and tidying up work in the perennial beds to complete and the forecast is calling for snow and cold. If you haven’t done so already, now is the time to help your garden plantings make it through the tough months ahead. The wild swings in winter weather can seriously impact your garden plants, but there are easy ways to help your landscape survive through the winter and thrive next growing season. You’ve probably noticed several different types of winter damage which occurs in your yard. Evergreens, like pines, yews, arborvitaes and rhododendrons, can turn brown, especially on the windward side. Typically, this is caused by winter winds and sunshine causing transpiration (water loss through leaves and needles) when the roots are frozen and can’t take up water. Sunshine stimulates cellular activity and then if the temperature drops quickly, tissue damage occurs. Keep your evergreens - including those rhododendrons - watered well until the ground is frozen. Anti-desiccant sprays provide a protective waxy coating which slows transpiration. Apply late in fall or early winter and follow directions on the label carefully. Burlap can also be used for protection. Attach the burlap to stakes driven into the ground forming a “V” with the plant in the open part of the “V” and the bottom of the “V” facing the prevailing exposure to the wind. Make sure there’s enough space between the burlap and the plant to prevent rubbing. Thin-barked and young trees are particularly susceptible to sun scald during the winter. This typically occurs on the south or southwest side of the tree trunk when the sun heats up the bark and stimulates the movement of fluids. If temperatures then drop quickly, cells burst and tissues dry, the bark cracks and splits. Tree wrap is very effective in preventing sun scald. Proper plant placement - providing some protection from direct sun - is also an effective preventative measure. Your most recently planted shrubs, trees and perennial materials can also be killed during the winter months by frost heaving. This occurs when the soil freezes and the plant’s root ball is heaved up out of the ground. Air comes in through the cracks in the soil and root desiccation occurs. Mulching is effective in preventing frost heaving and if you notice plants that have been pushed up above the ground during the winter, push them back into the soil as soon as possible. Right now plants are going through a process called acclimation - a seasonal change in which woody plants slow down, stop growing and go dormant. This process helps them to survive the winter months. If acclimation did not occur, plant cells full of water would burst in a sudden freeze - causing the plant to die. Acclimated plants have had time to move water outside the cell walls - cell dehydration. Amazingly, this process triggers changes in the cell sap and a kind of protective antifreeze is formed. All these concerns exemplify why it’s important to select landscape materials that are right for our USDA Hardiness Zone - 5 or 6 in our region. Native plants are the best choices because they are well-suited to our climate. With all the garden clean-up/winter preparation chores at this time of year, it is very tempting to do some pruning of shrubs and trees. Don’t - leave those shrubs and trees alone - they are working through that acclimation process and with weather fluctuations can sometimes be “confused.” If you prune right now, plants will try to put out new growth at the same time they are trying to acclimate and go dormant. This weakens plants and severe damage can occur particularly if you try to prune on a warm day, causing the sap to rise before temperatures plummet back down again. Hold off on pruning until the dead of winter when plants have gone dormant. Pruning can be held off until late winter or early spring when the branches are still bare and it is easy to see the shape of the plant. Spring blooming shrubs, however, should not be pruned until after they bloom next year.
