Gillett Road bridge over Erie Canal in Ogden now restricted to eight tons The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) announced November 7 that the Gillett Road bridge over the Erie Canal in the Town of Ogden is now restricted to vehicles weighing eight ton or less. The structure had been posted at 20 tons. An empty single unit vehicle (2 axles/6 tires) typically weighs six tons, according to the NYSDOT. The posting was put in place following a recent inspection and engineering analysis that revealed the bridge can no longer safely carry heavier traffic in its current condition, according to a press release. The duration of the weight restriction is not yet known. An assessment and plan will be developed, DOT representatives said. Provided information

One season after setting personal bests in goals, assists, points and penalty minutes, Spencerport native Shane Prince is in the early stages of his third professional season as a professional hockey player in Binghamton as part of the Ottawa Senators system. And in the final year of his original three-year entry level contract. But the goal of becoming a player in the National Hockey League hasn’t changed. “It’s a lot different coming into my third year than it was in my first or second, so there is definitely more pressure on me to step up and be a leader on this team,” Prince said after the game. “I thought I had a real good preseason; played in a couple of games and did well, so I just need to keep working down here and get back there as soon as I can. “As a scorer you’re always leaned on to help contribute offensively and if the team is losing and we’re not scoring goals, it’s on me to break through and score a couple. Prince, a second round draft pick by Ottawa in the 2011 entry draft, scored the third goal against the Rochester Americans in his trip home November 7 giving him two goals and three assists over the first nine games this season. He left home in 2008 at 16 years old to play junior hockey in Canada for first Kitchener and then Ottawa. One season after being drafted, he finished fourth in the Ontario Hockey League in scoring with 43 goals and 47 assists in 57 games.
The just-turned 22-year-old (Nov. 16) began his pro career in 2012-13 and he netted 18 goals in 65 games; then added 21 goals last season. “That’s one of those things that is out of my control. I just need to worry about my game. I thought I had a great season last year, a great camp and a pretty decent start to this year, so I’m looking to build on it.” If Prince is still in the American Hockey League, he will return to Rochester with Binghamton for a final time in this regular season on December 5.

Brockport fundraiser Nov. 21 organized for Pierson family by Kristina Gablaski A special fundraiser planned in Brockport on Friday, November 21, will help to support the family of Rochester Police Department Officer Daryl Pierson, who was killed in the line of duty September 3, 2014. Four Brockport-area police wives are organizing the event, a “Night of Giving: Brockport for Pierson” which will be held from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Taproom at Bill Gray’s Restaurant, 4647 South Lake Road, Brockport. Tamara Barrus, Lisa Ireland, Danielle Mesiti, and Caurie Putnam-Ferguson call themselves, “Police Wives for Pierson.” “I was only a police wife for four days when Officer Daryl Pierson was killed in the line of duty in Rochester,” says Caurie Putnam-Ferguson. Her husband, Eric, is an officer in the Rochester Police Department. Putnam-Ferguson says Mesiti, Ireland and Barrus are all friends who were at her wedding and were among the first to reach out and make sure she and her husband were OK following the death of Officer Pierson. “Having each other as support was so critical,” she says. “Within 24 hours we had decided we would do something for Daryl’s widow, Amy Pierson.” Amy was

left with two very young children - Christian and Charity. Bill Gray’s will donate 15 percent of all proceeds from food and drink orders during the “Night of Giving” event to Daryl’s widow and children. Purchasers need to identify themselves as a fundraiser attendee, organizers say. Putnam-Ferguson says she comes from multi-generation police family with many uncles and cousins in the New York Police Department. In 1964, her grandmother’s cousin, Detective James Donegan, NYPD, was killed in the line of duty responding to a domestic violence call. The 50th anniversary of his murder was recently observed and Putnam-Ferguson says she and her family are still affected by the loss. “It shows how deep and penetrating losing a police officer is to a family,” she observes. “Amy Pierson and her children have a long road ahead of them and this fundraiser is just one little way to support them on this horrible journey.” Danielle Mesiti’s husband, Stephen, is a sergeant with the Brockport Police Department. She, too, comes from a law enforcement family. “I grew up in a service-minded family,” she says. “It’s a huge sacrifice for families.” Continued on page 2

Fundraiser organized for Pierson family Continued from page one Law enforcement officers must put their duty first on a daily basis, Mesiti notes. “They are missing birthdays, family dinners, helping get the kids to bed.” Mesiti describes the law enforcement community as a remarkable group of people. “All of our hearts break for Amy,” she says. “We hope she feels the love and support coming from everybody. We really mean it from the bottom of our hearts.” Tamara Barrus’ husband, Tyler, is retired from the Monroe County Sheriff ’s Office. She says the fundraiser at Bill Gray’s is a way for residents on the west side of the city to reach out and help. “Everybody wants to do something to help,” she says and explains that wives of police officers are always aware that their husband’s lives are in danger on a daily basis. “You can’t let it over-run your life,” she says. “You don’t know what you would have done (if you had been Amy
Pierson). I would not want to be in her shoes.” Lisa Ireland’s husband is a New York State Trooper who is sometimes called out of town on assignments. “I know I’m a single phone call away from that being me,” she says of Amy Pierson. “You can’t live with it in the forefront of your mind, but it is always in the back of your mind. It never goes away.” She says wives of police officers have a special bond. “We are a sisterhood. There is a bond between us that will hold forever. We will do what we can to support (Amy) and her family,” Ireland says. She thanks Bill Gray’s for their efforts in making the fundraiser possible. “We want to fill that place,” she says of the Taproom. “Night of Giving: Brockport for Pierson,” will also include raffles and music. A photo booth will be provided by Encore Events.

First came the butchering, then the smoking, salting and curing meats, enough to last through the coming winter. That was followed by the rendering of lard or tallow from the animal fat for making soap and candles. Only after the root cellar was finally stocked was it time to cook, bake and decorate for the holiday feast. This 19th-century family endeavor is revived village-wide on Saturday, November 22, at Genesee Country Village & Museum in its program Preparing for the Holidays - the 19th-Century Way. Visitors can see and, at times, participate in the activities that will fill the historic village, everything from brewing beer to sausage stuffing. Included will be

Jessica Tracy and her children Jenna, grade three, and Hunter, grade two, both students at Northwood Elementary School in Hilton, enjoy dinner at McDonald’s to help benefit the Northwood library. Provided photo.
Northwood’s “Books for Len” celebrates 15th year Over the past 15 years, the Books for Len event has raised over $20,000 for Northwood Elementary School with the help of the McDonald’s Restaurant on Long Pond and Latta Roads. McDonald’s donates 20 percent of the proceeds from the two-night event for the purchase of books for the Northwood library and to bring in guest authors. This year, the library received $1,232.80. The Books for Len program honors former teacher Len O’Lare, who passed away unexpectedly in 2000. Pam Rapp started the event because of the difference O’Lare made in her daughter’s life by helping her develop a love for reading. Each new book purchased from the proceeds receives a stamp that reads, “Books for Len” and a starfish picture. The starfish refers to a story that O’Lare told his students about a man walking along a beach throwing starfish back in the ocean. When someone remarked, “You’ll never save them all.” The
man replied, “Even if I just save one, I’ve made a difference.” Teachers volunteer to work behind the counter and their students get a kick out of having their teachers wait on them. Even retired teachers and alumni come back to volunteer for the event. This year, the first night netted $300 more in donations than the previous year, noted Rapp. Attendees were also given McDonald’s puzzles. Northwood students aren’t the only ones who benefit from the program. K-6 students donated 20 boxes gently-used children’s books to the Rochester City School District. Beverly Gushoe, director of career and technical education, helped to coordinate the book donation. “I thought it would be fun to come to McDonald’s,” said sixth grader Samantha Kramer. “I brought books that I didn’t want anymore because I thought someone else could enjoy them.” Provided informatio

A simple gesture of thanks Photographs and text by Walter Horylev Parma resident Henry Ross, 90-years-old and a veteran of the United States Army Air Force, shares a home with his sister-in-law Carol Starwalt on Peck Road in Parma. About a year and a half ago he moved up from Florida. On November 11, Veterans Day, he had just finished breakfast when Carol exclaimed: “Did you see what’s out front? You’ve got to see it!” In the front yard, close to the road, was a sign with a red, a white and a blue balloon on it. It read: “Thank you, Uncle Hank, and all Vets.” Henry added: “I walked out and I said: It makes me weepy-eyed. I didn’t expect any recognition; it was a total surprise. My neighbor Debbie Dean always calls me Uncle Hank so we suspected it was her doing.” And it was. Henry served with distinction. He was drafted in January 1943 and ended up in the 15th Army Air Force flying out of Italy. He was a radio-operator and waist gunner on a B-24 bomber. Henry actually flew 38 missions but was credited with 50 missions owning to especially dangerous flights made to bomb Ploesti, Munich, Vienna and several other targets. On one mission to bomb the Ploesti oil refineries their plane lost the use of two engines from mechanical problems and had to turn back. While being attacked by a German fighter plane, the plane was hit by a 20 mm shell and Henry ended up with a bloody nick in

After the 50 missions he was rotated back to the States and ended up in Air Transport Command in Reno, Nevada, as a flight instructor for radio operators. He was a Tech Sergeant when discharged in October 1945. Below: Ross is second from right bottom row.

Opinion/Comments Make every day Veterans Day As fall turns into winter, one cannot help but reflect on the changing of seasons. So, too, was the changing of the world in 1918. When the hostilities ceased at the 11th hour, of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 and the eventual signing of the Treaty of Versailles, the world was going to celebrate the ending of “the war to end all wars.” As we know now, “the war to end all wars did not last.” With the rise of Axis Powers, we were again at war. We were again called on to defend our freedom and those of other countries, against aggression in Korea, Vietnam, and Desert Storm and other conflicts of a smaller scale. We are now battling the War on Terror which is infiltrating our continent. As our guardians of freedom change from generation to generation, one thing remains constant. Our veterans will be ever vigilant and dedicated to protecting our freedoms. We will be forever indebted to our nation’s military veterans who have served, and are serving their country. As you walk or drive in Spencerport and you see a bumper sticker, a magnetic ribbon, a veterans service organization sticker on a vehicle, stop and thank that person for their
service or for their son’s or daughter’s service. A majority of American’s today have never known the commitment it takes to serve our nation As Veterans Day passes and before the snow arrives and the holidays approach, please take a moment to wander through Memorial Park across from Fairfield Cemetery on Route 259 in Spencerport. Look at the names on plates and silently thank them for their sacrifice. Look at the military banners hanging from our light posts in the Spencerport business district to see some of the sons and daughters serving their country. Say silent prayer for them serving where America needs them. If you know a family of a service member, thank them for sacrifices they make to support their loved one. Make every day Veterans Day, a day about paying respect to the men and women who serve and have served our country. Don Sisson, Commander Ferris Goodridge Post 330 Spencerport

Taking science to a different level High school students are aware NaHCO3 and CH3COOH have a chemical reaction when mixed. Third-graders may look at the molecular formulas and wonder how to pronounce them or why the numerals are tiny. Chris Amesbury’s forensics class was recently challenged with presenting complex science concepts, like the chemical reaction of baking soda and vinegar, in a way that third-grade students would understand and be interested in. This Project-Based Learning (PBL) activity’s theme revolved around a made-up crime in the high school and the forensics that could be used to solve the case. “Explore any topic you are interested in, even if we haven’t covered it in class,” said Amesbury to his students, emphasizing the PBL aspect student voice and choice. Amesbury discussed with the upperclassmen what a third-grader’s learning abilities are and showed videos depicting a third-grade classroom. Amesbury worked with Gates Chili teacher Laura Braid and BOCES 2 STEM Coach Leslie Tanner to coordinate the pieces of the PBL. The forensics class also had assistance from Rochester Museum and Science Center Head of School and Teacher Programs Deborah Massey. She helped the students understand how to make the stations kid friendly and how to interact with thirdgraders. Part of a PBL is utilizing experts in a given field to further the students’ discovery. PBL is intended to engage learners’ minds and involve meaningful inquiry. According to the Buck Institute for Education, there are eight essentials for PBL: significant content; a need to know; a driving question; student voice and choice; 21st-century competencies; in-depth inquiry; critique and revision; and public audience. “Through this project, the high school students were able to think critically, collaborate and be creative,” said Tanner, touching on key competencies that stu-
dents need to be successful in the workforce. On October 30, 51 Florence Brasser third-graders were treated to a case of whodunit. They walked into a fake crime scene in the atrium of the high school and then visited seven stations featuring forensics-based activities. The third-graders were there to help solve the crime using evidence, science and observation and the forensics class students assisted them as the culmination of the PBL. At one station meant to test a white powder found at the scene, third-graders witnessed reactions between various white powders and liquids. When the baking soda and vinegar reacted during the demonstration and again when testing the mystery substance, one student deduced what the white powder was. He was quick to write his answer: “Baking soda because it swelled up.” Just the reaction the forensics students were looking for. PBL throughout BOCES 2 In addition to the activity at Gates Chili, BOCES 2 STEM Coach Leslie Tanner has worked with additional BOCES 2 districts to implement Project Based Learning. Churchville-Chili Teacher Patti Saucke is leading her students through a yearlong activity revolving around solving food shortages and featuring hydroponics. More than 20 Churchville-Chili teachers have received formal training on PBL. Holley students recently designed and built bridges as part of a PBL. A Department of Transportation representative visited the class as an expert in the field and served as an audience during the students’ final presentation. At Kendall, students utilized a 3D printer to create original fishing lure designs after researching the science and math of fishing lures. The students hope to present their lures to local fishing charters. To learn more about PBL, visit the Buck Institute for Education at www.bie.org. Provided information

PROVIDING DIRECTION The profession of funeral director dates back many centuries and has played a very important part in the death rituals of many cultures. The need for funeral directors evolved with the growth of the mortuary industry in ancient Rome, which centered on cremation and elaborate rituals. In this country, the modern practice of embalming grew out of the necessity to deliver the preserved bodies of fallen Civil War officers to their families back home. Today’s funeral directors receive rigorous training and must complete a licensing procedure before they can begin to help families deal with death. Aside from funeral services, many funeral
directors help people adapt to changes in their lives following the death of a loved one. Funeral directors are trained to help families arrange the type of service they want. The service is held either at a place of worship or at the funeral home with the deceased present. It varies in ritual according to denomination. The presence of friends at this time is an acknowledgement of friendship and support. For more information, please call THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME at 585-392-7100. We are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day, and we are located at 735 East Avenue. Family owned and trusted since 1976.

by Kristina Gabalski The Town of Sweden will wrap up its year-long 200th anniversary celebration with a festive Bicentennial Ball planned for Saturday, December 13, at 6 p.m. at the College at Brockport Seymour Union Ballroom. Bicentennial Committee members Alicia Fink, Patricia Connors and Marie Bell have been working to organize the event, which they say is black tie optional. A cocktail hour begins at 6 p.m. and includes a cash bar with hors d’oeuvres. The sit-down dinner will be served at 7:15 p.m. and includes grilled beef tenderloin and chicken breast, vegetables, potato and a dessert station. “It is a community event and we want the community to come,” Fink, Connors and Bell say. “It’s the holidays - it’s a nice time of year to get together and this, in some way, replaces the gala from Lakeside.” A vegan-vegetarian entree is available. Fink, Connors, and Bell say that if you would like the special entree, they should make that request when they purchase tickets. Tickets are $35 and are available through November 26 at the Sweden Town Hall and the Sweden/Clarkson Community Center. Music will be provided by “Nik and the Nice Guys,” and a photographer will be taking photos during the cocktail hour. The photographs will be available online following the event. Eleven-ounce souvenir wine glasses are included with the ticket price, organizers say. The glass features the Sweden Bicentennial logo. Fink, Connors and Bell say the year-long bicentennial celebration has been successful. “We’ve had so much fun,” Bell says, “We’ve had a really committed group.” The celebration began back in January and included special events each month. Those events included a re-enactment of the first Sweden Town meeting, a quilt show, a historical home tour, Old Home Weekend during the 4th of July, a barn tour and a cemetery tour. “We’ve had a very talented and organized group,” Alicia Fink adds, which included committee members who were, “committed to making every event successful.” For additional information regarding the Bicentennial Ball, call 637-2144.

It used to be that every small village had its own drugstore, but these days communities with their own, locally owned drugstore/pharmacy are rare. The Village of Hilton is fortunate to have its own “corner drugstore” in the Hilton Family Pharmacy and Coffee Corner located at 32 Main Street. The pharmacy is at heart a family-run business. Pharmacist/Pharmacy Manager Peter Miles says his father, James Miles, owns the business, and the parent company based in Medina also runs a pharmacy there (Rosenkrans Pharmacy) and the Oakfield Family Pharmacy in Oakfield, Genesee County, in addition to the Hilton store. The business offers a full-service independent pharmacy and much more for customers. There is a full-range of over-the-counter vitamins, cold care products, first aid items, as well as durable medical equipment, a full-range of gift items, greeting cards, gift wrap - both cards and gift wrap are always 50 percent off - seasonal items, nostalgic candy, Yankee Candle and more. The “Coffee Corner” which is housed in the store, offers both hot and cold drink options including specialty drinks. “It’s what Hilton needed when we came here,” Peter observes about the business.
We do not print endorsements of political officials or candidates for office on our editorial page. We reserve the right to edit letters for brevity, clarity, accuracy and fair play. Letters printed on our editorial page reflect a sampling of those received each week.
A Special Thank You To All Our Newspaper Carriers.
“Our volume is increasing, our business is increasing,” Peter says. “Most of the people in Hilton like small business and like supporting local businesses.” Q: What are some of the challenges you face? One challenge, Peter explains, is bringing younger families in who live in local housing developments. Another is the nature of the business itself. Healthcare is a difficult business, he says. “The challenge is to find where we fit into the health care model.” The pharmacy is always pursuing new opportunities to serve the community by offering services like Medication Therapy Management (MTM) - which works to optimize drug therapy and improve therapeutic outcomes for patients - immunizations, flu vaccines and veterinary compounding. Peter explains you can have your pet prescriptions filled at Hilton Family Pharmacy, often times at a savings over purchasing them from the veterinarian.
Q. How do you keep the business growing? Personal customer service is the key, Peter says. The Hilton Pharmacy must overcome the challenge of people who like the convenience of shopping at big box stores and simply filling their prescriptions while they are there. To counter that, Peter and full-time pharmacy technician/assistant manager Tracy Urbonas work together to assure the customer at Hilton Family Pharmacy is wellserved and happy. For example, there is an actual person who answers the phone when you call - no answering machine. “Most of the time, I find I’m marketing myself,” Peter explains. He says he has worked to create a relationship based on trust with his customers. “It’s the relationship that really matters to people,” he says. “It’s the little things that help you stay viable in the marketplace and get a leg-up on big box competition.” As an independent pharmacy, Peter says he is not burdened by corporate policies which often are implemented, “at the expense of the person standing in front of me.” Q: What about the coffee shop? Peter says he never considered having a “coffee bar” as part of the pharmacy; however, before opening, people repeatedly asked him, “... Will you have coffee?” He was able to purchase some used equipment and decided to give it a try. The gamble paid off and Peter has upgraded his equipment. “It’s a good draw,” he says of the coffee. “People who don’t know the pharmacy is here, know the coffee shop.” In fact, when the pharmacy first opened in 2007, Peter remembers he spent more time filling coffee cups than filling prescriptions. He offers Finger Lakes Coffee products. The coffee shop is busy early in the morning, he says. Teachers on their way to school often stop in around 6:30 a.m. Q: What about the future? Peter says he sees more compounding services - preparing customized medications for patients - including the veterinary compounding - in the future. “To keep growing the business, we need to provide something in Hilton that’s few and far between,” he says. “We need to keep people happy to keep people coming in.” need to keep people happy to keep people coming in.” About this series of Westside News Inc. articles: The first business profiled in this series was Butterfly Kisses Sweet Shoppe in Spencerport which has been in business a little more than one year. We next talked with Peggy Naughton at The Johnson House in Churchville which has served the community for 37 years.
Personal customer service is the key, Peter Miles says. K. Gabalski photo.

Get out & grow! by Kristina Gabalski
Helping the garden get through the cold ahead by Kristina Gabalski As I write this column, I’m still in the midst of end-ofseason yard and garden chores. I’ve got more bulbs to plant and tidying up work in the perennial beds to complete and the forecast is calling for snow and cold. If you haven’t done so already, now is the time to help your garden plantings make it through the tough months ahead. The wild swings in winter weather can seriously impact your garden plants, but there are easy ways to help your landscape survive through the winter and thrive next growing season. You’ve probably noticed several different types of winter damage which occurs in your yard. Evergreens, like pines, yews, arborvitaes and rhododendrons, can turn brown, especially on the windward side. Typically, this is caused by winter winds and sunshine causing transpiration (water loss through leaves and needles) when the roots are frozen and can’t take up water. Sunshine stimulates cellular activity and then if the temperature drops quickly, tissue damage occurs. Keep your evergreens - including those rhododendrons - watered well until the ground is frozen. Antidesiccant sprays provide a protective waxy coating which slows transpiration. Apply late in fall or early winter and follow directions on the label carefully. Burlap can also be used for protection. Attach the burlap to stakes driven into the ground forming a “V” with the plant in the open part of the “V” and the bottom of the “V” facing the prevailing exposure to the wind. Make sure there’s enough space between the burlap and the plant to prevent rubbing.

Thin-barked and young trees are particularly susceptible to sun scald during the winter. This typically occurs on the south or southwest side of the tree trunk when the sun heats up the bark and stimulates the movement of fluids. If temperatures then drop quickly, cells burst and tissues dry, the bark cracks and splits. Tree wrap is very effective in preventing sun scald. Proper plant placement - providing some protection from direct sun - is also an effective preventative measure. Your most recently planted shrubs, trees and perennial materials can also be killed during the winter months by frost heaving. This occurs when the soil freezes and the plant’s root ball is heaved up out of the ground. Air comes in through the cracks in the soil and root desiccation occurs. Mulching is effective in preventing frost heaving and if you notice plants that have been pushed up above the ground during the winter, push them back into the soil as soon as possible. Right now plants are going through a process called acclimation - a seasonal change in which woody plants slow down, stop growing and go dormant. This process helps them to survive the winter months. If acclimation did not occur, plant cells full of water would burst in a sudden freeze - causing the plant to die. Acclimated plants have had time to move water outside the cell walls - cell dehydration. Amazingly, this process triggers changes in the cell sap and a kind of protective antifreeze is formed. All these concerns exemplify why it’s important to select landscape materials that are right for our USDA Hardiness Zone - 5 or 6 in our region. Native plants are the best choices because they are well-suited to our climate. With all the garden clean-up/winter preparation chores at this time of year, it is very tempting to do some pruning of shrubs and trees. Don’t - leave those shrubs and trees alone - they are working through that acclimation process and with weather fluctuations can sometimes be “confused.” If you prune right now, plants will try to put out new growth at the same time they are trying to acclimate and go dormant. This weakens plants and severe damage can occur particularly if you try to
Evergreens, like this dwarf Alberta spruce, can benefit from some extra protection to get them through the winter months ahead. K. Gabalski photo. prune on a warm day, causing the sap to rise before temperatures plummet back down again. Hold off on pruning until the dead of winter when plants have gone dormant. Pruning can be held off until late winter or early spring when the branches are still bare and it is easy to see the shape of the plant. Spring blooming shrubs, however, should not be pruned until after they bloom next year.
Christmas on the Canal celebrates 19 years with December 7 event With the continued generosity of the community, Elaine Spaziano says that Spencerport will celebrate its 19th annual Christmas on the Canal event on Sunday, December 7 from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Union Street in the village. From 1:30 to 5 p.m. on Union Street look for Santa and Mrs. Claus, Horse Drawn Hayrides, a Living Nativity, Entertainment on the Bandstand, a free children’s craft tent, food and shopping. At 5 p.m., at the tolling of the church bells, everyone assembles at the Gazebo for the annual Tree Lighting followed by the one mile Candlelight Caroling led by horse and wagon.
Spaziano says the event has been supported by the community. Anyone who would like to donate to the effort to keep Christmas on the Canal alive, can send contributions to: Christmas on the Canal, P.O. Box 177, Spencerport, NY 14559. All funds received are used only for the COTC event and expenditures are decided upon by the committee and/or board, according to Spaziano. Churchville-Chili senior Natalie Jackson performed with the AllNational Concert Band, directed by composer-conductor Mark Camphouse, at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tennessee. Provided photo.
C-C senior plays in All-National Honors Ensemble in Nashville On October 29, the prestigious All-National Concert Band, directed by renowned composer-conductor Mark Camphouse, took the stage at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tennessee. Natalie Jackson, the first Churchville-Chili student to be honored with membership in the All-National Honors Ensembles (sponsored by the National Association for Music Education (NAfMe), performed in the French horn section. It was another impressive step in the young artist’s rising musical career. “I’m excited about the honor and the opportunity to work and perform alongside other talented musicians from around the country,” says Jackson. “The characteristic that impresses me most about Natalie is her drive to continue growing,” said Kevin Mead, Churchville-Chili’s Wind Ensemble director. “Natalie works extremely hard, pays attention to details, accepts criticism readily, and works constantly to continue improving.” Jackson is a member of the Churchville-Chili High School Wind Ensemble and is in her second year as French horn section leader. She also performs in the select Brass Ensemble, Concert Choir, and has been both on stage and in the pit orchestra for school musicals. Last November, she was chosen to sit first chair in the New York All-State Symphonic Band. Outside of Churchville-Chili, Jackson studies privately with Jill Hammond, is a member of the Hochstein Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Roberts Wesleyan College Wind Ensemble, and performs in Robert’s Brass Quintet. In addition to her talent and deep commitment to music, Jackson has outstanding academic achievements. She was recently named a 2014 AP Scholar, and has been recognized with Outstanding Participant certification for being in the top 3 percent of more than 160,000 Black Americans who participated in the 2015 National Achievement Scholarship Program.
