The Youth America Grand Prix features ballet and contemporary styles, and last year, Olivia was in the Top 12 dancers from around the world, winning a scholarship for additional ballet studies. “I love classical ballet and I love contemporary,” Olivia says. “They balance each other out. I want to dance professionally for a career when I get older.” Charlene says all three of her daughters work hard to do well in school and continue their studies in dance. Village of Brockport receives 17th Certified Local Government (CLG) Grant The Village of Brockport received its 17th Certified Local Government (CLG) grant. The grant’s purpose is to enable the village to hire a consultant to make an historic resources survey of College, King and Clinton Streets with a view to identifying one or more historic districts that may be eligible for listing on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. The CLG program is funded by the U.S. Department of the Interior and administered by the NYS Historic Preservation Office for the purpose of assisting municipalities with their historic preservation programs. States are required to reserve 10 percent of their federal historic preservation allocation each year for CLG grants. CLGs are municipalities with historic preservation programs that conform to certain standards established by the Department of the Interior. Distribution of this grant is based on merit and need of the certified local government.

The Village of Brockport has been a certified local government since 1995. A similar study identified an historic residential district comprising 72 homes on State and South Streets and Park Avenue on the village’s east side that has been listed on the Registers. A total of 130 structures in the village (plus the High Street cemetery) have been so-listed. Also, a program of the Village’s Historic Preservation Board has designated 110 structures as historic landmarks. The owners of structures listed on the Registers are eligible for state and federal tax credits for work on their buildings that conforms to Department of Interior standards. “We are very grateful for the wonderful support our historic preservation program has received from the State Historic Preservation Office,” Trustee Bill Andrews said. “Without their help we could not have accomplished nearly as much.” Provided information

A record setting day On October 5, Brockport Central School students set a new Walk To School record with 670 walkers representing all three elementary schools, the Middle School and High School. This year’s winner of the Walk To School trophy was Hill School with a remarkable 47 percent of its students walking. Participation was up this year with an impressive 43 percent of all grade school students walking or biking to school. Now in its 11th year, the walk, which was initiated to help increase exercise in children and demonstrate the fun of walking to school with family and friends, has generated full community participation and excitement. There are so many individuals, student groups, parent groups, service organizations, commercial vendors and even a farmer involved that naming them all would be difficult (so I won’t try). However, a huge thank you to everyone who walked and everyone who participated in making the walk another great success. Let’s see if we can do even better next year. “The first two games we just thought we’re Byron-Bergen and we can win just by stepping off the bus,” Bees girls’ soccer head coach Wayne Hill said. “We haven’t played that way since then.” The Bees extended their winning streak to 14 consecutive games with a convincing 4-1 victory over Kendall in the final regular season game. Junior Makenzie Muoio began the scoring for the Bees in the 14th minute taking a pass through the defense by Jeanne Denson on the right wing and finding the far upper corner of the net for a 1-0 lead. Muoio made it 2-0 at 36:54 after taking a through-pass from Kelsey Maurer and putting the ball inside the right post. That marked her tenth goal of the season giving the Bees four players with ten or more with Miriam Tardy, Kelsey Fuller and Kelsey Maurer. Just 93 seconds later, Kendall closed to within a goal of the lead as junior Taylor ReQua pounded her direct kick from 23yards out into the lower left corner of the net to close the Eagles to 2-1 at halftime.
Byron-Bergen regained their two-goal cushion just three minutes into the second half as the team’s leader in assists, Leah Thompson, passed the ball from midfield up to Fuller, who scored her 13th goal of the campaign. Kendall threatened in the 55th minute as freshman Hailee Mitchell hit the crossbar. The Bees then put the game out of reach at 59:04 as Maurer gathered the ball in the box, one-stepped around the defense and rifled her shot into the back of the net to make it 4-1. “We possess the ball and pass with a purpose,” Hill said. With some teams having one game remaining in their regular season schedules, the Bees could be anywhere from a two seed to a four-seed for the upcoming Section V playoffs. Addison appears to have locked up the top seed in Class C1 and the Bees are awaiting results from Gananda and Bloomfield, which will determine their final seeding. The Bees finished the regular season having outscored their opponents 64-8 over 16 games and shutout their opposition in 11 of the 14 wins.

Eighth-graders Celeste Keyes and Leah Ingraham each had two individual first place finishes and were part of a winning relay team to lead Spencerport to a 100-76 win over Batavia in girls’ swimming. Keyes won the 100-Butterfly in 1:05.72 and the 100-Backstroke in 1:08.07 while Ingraham touched first in both the 500Freestyle (5:52.37) and, just three events later, the 100-Breaststroke (1:21.94). The
Rangers swept the top three spots in the 500 with Sydney Federico and Sara Bonfiglio taking second and third respectively. With sophomore Nicole Dates and junior Kate Dunn, both were part of the winning meet-opening 200-Medley Relay team in a time of 2:09.14. Dates took first in the 200-Freestyle in 2:08.04 while senior Mia Krolczyk finished first in the 200-Individual Medley in 2:34.34.
Hilton Cadets celebrate senior day with seven goals by Warren Kozireski Senior Nick Simone netted a hat trick with one assist while classmate Matt DeFeo added two goals and one assist to lead Hilton to a 7-0 win over Churchville-Chili - their fourth consecutive at home and extended their current unbeaten streak to six games. The Cadets used their superior team speed, especially on the wings, to create chance after chance. Simone converted a penalty kick at the 16:35 mark and, just 1:44 later, made it 2-0 Hilton on a 26-yard arcing shot that went in the net just under the crossbar for his team-leading 17th goal of the season. Noah Malta had his hard shot tipped over the crossbar by Saints senior goalkeeper Kyle Dick in the 27th minute, but that only delayed the Cadets third goal as senior Michael Provost redirected a centering pass from DeFeo into the net at 31:01. Hilton poured in four more goals in the second half with Simone completing his hat trick with a left-foot shot at 47:49.
Less than four minutes later Provost raced down the left wing and centered a pass to DeFeo that he redirected into the net to make it 5-0 Cadets. In the 61st minute Michael Abbott hit a cross that deflected off the goalkeeper’s hands before Noah Malta pounced on the loose ball for the sixth Cadet goal. The final tally came in the 65th minute as seniors finished off their final regular season home game with a goal scored by DeFeo - his tenth of the year - after a feed from Simone. The Cadets improved to 10-4-1 with the win with one game remaining on their schedule. The win clinched second place in Monroe County Division 1 behind first place Fairport and a third seed in the Class AA Section V playoffs. Hilton senior goalkeeper Jesse DePrez was credited with 12 saves as the Cadets registered their sixth shutout of the season. Other seniors playing in their final contest were Melkal Lambov, Ryan Johnson and Jacob Vinch.

Brockport Police host tour for the Brockport Boys’ Academy Summer Program by Tami Raco One summer day while Brockport Chief of Police Daniel Varrenti was out on patrol, he met up with a group of elementary aged boys playing outside near Cooper Hall. Part of the ongoing focus of the Brockport Police Department’s community policing is to engage and interact positively with the youth. Part of this initiative is to talk with children in the community, build positive relations and give out toy police badges to help foster good relations with them. The group of boys he met on this occasion included students from the Brockport Boys’ Academy Summer Program. This program selects boys from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. School #9 to help provide positive summer activities for them through a program that takes place at the college. ing the founder and Chief Administrator of the program, Mr. Burnice Green Sr. In collaboration with the Brockport Boys’ Summer Academy, the Chief of Police and Lt. Mark Cuzzupoli hosted the group of 35 to 40 boys at the Brockport Police Station where they had a tour of the police department. The tour was received so well that at the end of the summer program the Chief and Lt. Cuzzupoli were invited to the Summer Awards Ceremony at School #9. The boys and Mr. Green were very pleased with the collaboration with the Boys’ Academy and the Brockport Police Department and are looking forward to working together again next summer. According to Lt. Cuzzupoli, “providing tours to children help establish that the police are here to help them. Our goal is to help the youth feel more comfortable talking with the police.”

Sweden solicits water survey responses The Sweden Town Board has convened a committee of the board and interested citizens to take a look at possible grant/loan programs that would bring water district expansion projects to properties currently without access to public water. The most important part of the committee’s work now is to gather comprehensive information about well water issues in the town. In October, a survey will be mailed to all residents who do not have public water. The town has also set up an on-line survey option at www.surveymonkey. com/r/swedenwater. Residents can participate on-line or return the paper survey by mail. The town board urges all residents on private wells to complete the survey and return it by Monday, November
7. Grant/loan opportunities generally require information that is contained in the survey. Without public participation in the survey, it will be difficult to pursue grants/loans. The survey asks questions about the quality and quantity of water, whether wells have gone dry, whether they have been found to contain contaminants. The survey also asks a very general question about household income - that information is used to qualify for certain funding opportunities. The public will be kept up-to-date on the committee’s progress through the Snapshots newsletter (delivered quarterly inside the Suburban News) and on the town website at www.townofsweden.org. St. John’s Church planning for 150th Anniversary by Joe Reinschmidt St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church of Spencerport will celebrate 150 years of serving the community next year. Accordingl, Reverend John Loncle, the current Pastor, called a meeting that was held on June 14 for any parishioners interested in planning activities to recognize this special occasion. That meeting was essentialy a brain storming session where individuals could make suggestions for specific events. Most ideas were accepted with the caveat that the suggester had to further explore and develop their idea. Several committees grew out of that meeting.

A second meeting was held on October 6 at which progress on some of the events was presented and discussed. The group agreed that a series of events throughout 2017 was preferred rather than one big celebration. Among those events will be a banquet, special liturgical services, a picnic, a musical presentation and a pamphlet detailing the history of St. John’s. More information will be forthcoming as these ideas and/or additional events are developed.

Make a World of Difference on Halloween (Family Features) This year, Halloween will bring tricks and treats, and teachable moments, too, thanks to Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. Under the guidance of teachers across the nation, thousands of students can learn positive global citizenship values and be empowered to make a difference. On Halloween, equipped with the knowledge that they can make the world a better place for children, kids can go door-to-door with the iconic orange UNICEF boxes to collect donations that add up to lifesaving change for vulnerable children. In order to bring the program to classrooms and help educators engage their students, a series of lesson plans were developed on topics like child rights, survival and development. The resources, which include readings, photos, videos, music, maps and games, introduce students to issues affecting the health and well-being of kids around the world, including clean water and sanitation, nutrition and education. Since 1950, the campaign has raised more than $175 million to help UNICEF provide children with medicine, nutrition, clean water, emergency relief and education.

The grand opening of the sixth playground in the Village of Brockport takes place on Sunday, October 23 at the South Avenue Park, beginning with the ribbon cutting at 1 p.m. The public is welcome. The opening could not have happened without prior efforts and preparation. On Saturday, October 1, the Parks Committee, Village Board, community, and thirty College at Brockport fraternity, sorority, and college lacrosse team members, worked to install the playground. The Bobcat bulldozer moved wood chips, while volunteers raked, shoveled, and put together play equipment. Ben Frasier, Parkitects’ representative, oversaw the construction project, DPW Superintendent Harry Donahue supervised, and the DPW employees worked on-site. Wegmans Food Markets’ contribution of food and drink assortments delivered for breakfast, lunch, and an early dinner during the day, made the tasks at hand much easier. The recent installation of the South Avenue playground is an excellent example of Parkitects, the playground design company’s belief that “ … Playgrounds built by community members bring out the best in people. Not only are they building a community gathering space, but they’re helping build community, pride and a sense of ownership.” Many thanks to all in the community who helped make the South Avenue playground a reality for children, who will play and have fun there for years to come. Mary Wojciechowski, as well as the impressive score restorations created by Brockport’s own Dr. William Hullfish. Wojciechowski, a nationally acclaimed vocalist who has appeared as soloist in venues across the Northeast, will perform “Don’t Try to Steal the Sweetheart of a Soldier” by Gus Van, Joe Schenck and Alfred Bryan and “Down by the Erie Canal” by George M. Cohan. A founding member of the American Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers, Cohan was inspired by the Erie Canal and wrote about its influence on Broadway musicals. Hullfish, professor emeritus and Smithsonian Gold Medal Artist, has restored two works from the composers’ manuscripts that will be premiered at this performance. The first work, “General Mix-Up, USA” by Thomas Allen, highlights a wide variety of well-known patriotic tunes. Hullfish will give a special introduction on this work and share his insights on Allen’s unique contributions to American music. The second work, “Village Festival” by Stephen Foster, is a nineteenth century symphonic masterpiece in five movements filled with soaring melodies and lively dances. The program also includes “To a Wild Rose” by Edward MacDowell, “Old Creole Days” by Ferde Grofe, and “The Star Spangled Banner.” Following the concert, there will be a dessert reception in Parish Hall celebrating Homecoming Weekend. How prepared are you? by Maggie Fitzgibbon How prepared are you? What would you do in the event of a weather-related emergency or a fire in your home or workplace? September was National Preparedness Month and October is Fire Prevention Month. The Spencerport Fire Department is hoping that people will take time to think about fire safety in their home and workplace and form their own preparedness plan. Eileen Magin has served as a volunteer with the Spencerport Volunteer Firemen’s Association Ladies Auxiliary since 1960. She serves in many capacities but fire safety education is her passion. “Statistics show that deaths from fire have dramatically declined, however seven people die each day in United States home fires. People need to be prepared in the event of any emergency,” Eileen said. She encourages families, senior citizens, couples and those who live alone to think about fire safety in their homes and plan their escape route in the event of a fire. “You have two to three minutes to escape a home from the time a smoke alarm goes off. Decide upon a meeting place. Practice your fire drill. If a fire occurs, leave the home and wait until the firemen give the clear to enter the home,” she added. “Many people have a perception that their environment is safe, but fire will occur if the right elements come together, such as cooking, smoking and fireplaces and or woodstoves.” Eileen Magin’s grandson, Lieutenant Richard Timothy Magin, is the Fire Prevention Officer for the Spencerport Fire Department. The Magin family has deep roots in the Spencerport Fire Department. Like Eileen, he encourages parents to practice fire drills with their children. “The more you practice a fire drill the more it will become second nature. If a fire strikes, you need to get out fast,” Richard Timothy explained. Prevention is key to safety. Both Eileen and Richard Timothy echo this same message. Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms frequently, replace the batteries every six months. Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms should be installed on every floor of a home and should be replaced every 10 years. Every home should be equipped with a fire extinguisher, which should be checked monthly. New homes are now being built with sprinklers and built-in smoke alarms. “Sprinklers can contain a fire and save a home.” Eileen said. Richard Timothy explained how a recent fire in Spencerport was confined due to a sprinkler system. “A fire started on a balcony of an apartment and due

This sprinkler system saved the apartment and building.” Weather emergency preparedness means to get ready for a weather-related emergency that calls for a state of emergency. Eileen noted that people should have enough non-perishable food and water for three days in the event of no power. “Parents should have a discussion with their children – ‘What would we do if we were stranded by a snow storm?’ Develop a plan including phone numbers and be prepared if our area needed to evacuate,” she said. Ogden Police Chief Christopher Mears explained that the Town of Ogden, which includes the Village of Spencerport, has an emergency response plan in place. “Our committee meets regularly to review the plan and we have trained for different scenarios. Four years ago when Hurricane Sandy hit, all the municipalities in this area were ready to implement emergency plans. The Red Cross has an agreement with Spencerport Central Schools to utilize the schools as emergency shelters when school is not in session. All the schools are equipped with backup generators,” he explained. Richard Timothy encourages people to become familiar with what resources are available in the community should homes need to be evacuated. Most importantly, Richard Timothy suggests people to ask themselves, “Am I prepared? If a weather emergency should happen am I prepared financially, physically and psychologically? Do I have a generator, working flashlights and batteries, a gas powered chainsaw and gas and other tools? Do I have the necessities, water, food and a way to safely create heat?” Interested in learning more about fire safety or emergency preparedness? Fire Safety Month was established after the Chicago Fire of 1871 destroyed much of this United States city. Over 100,000 people were homeless and 300 lives were lost as a result of this fire that was estimated to have cost $200 million in damages. Soon after this devastating fire Joseph Medill was elected mayor of Chicago and he promised stricter laws regarding construction of new buildings and fire codes.
Fire safety and prevention go hand in hand October is Fire Prevention Month. Fire safety and prevention go hand in hand. Some of the most important fire prevention safeguards are working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. These alarms should be tested every six months and replaced every ten years. Smoke alarms should be placed on every floor of a home including the basement. Every home should be equipped with a fire extinguisher that should be tested every month. Operating a fire extinguisher properly can be a challenge, so practice is key to successful control. Fire prevention practices encompass a wide range of household and work place practices that include cooking, heating and electrical. When cooking, make sure that the stove and oven are properly vented. Keep all flammable objects such as potholders and towels away from heat. Always stay in the kitchen when cooking. If you need to leave the area, then turn the stove off. If an oven fire occurs, turn the oven off and keep the oven door closed. If a stovetop fire happens, cover the pan with a lid and remove the pan from the burner. A fire extinguisher should be used to smother a kitchen fire. Many people use alternative methods in heating their homes and offices such as wood stoves, space heaters and fireplaces. Extra care should always be taken when using other methods. Maintain a three-foot safe zone around the heating source. Keep anything that could catch fire out of this area including children. Never use your oven to heat your home. Have your fireplace and chimney inspected and cleaned annually. Always turn off a space heater when leaving a room or office. Wood stoves should be installed as per the manufacturers’ specifications. Candles can be a fire hazard and should be monitored closely. Blow out candles when leaving the room and avoid using candles in bedrooms and other areas where people fall asleep. Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn. Think about using flameless candles in your home. Always use flashlights if the power is out. Parents should teach children what a smoke alarm sounds like and what to do in the event of a fire. Practice fire drills and have a meeting place outside the home. Children should know how to call 911 and understand how to give necessary information such as the home address and family member names. All family members should know the stop, drop and roll method if clothing catches fire. Stop, drop to the ground and roll until the flames extinguish. •Lyon, Esther (Roberts), died October 10, 2016, age 96. She was predeceased by her husband Daniel Lyon; her two brothers and sisters- in-law, Walter (Elnora) Roberts and Albert “Bud” (Betty) Roberts; and two nephews, Jimmy Roberts and Larry Roberts. She is survived by her step-daughter Meredith (Jeffrey) Altman of Churchville; granddaughter Megan (Robert) Hoose; two great-grandsons, Jessup and Aaron Hoose; two nieces Judith Snavley of Youngsville, Pennsylvania and Nanette (Bill) Rode of Warren, Pennsylvania; a nephew David (Carmen Wong) Roberts of Glendale, California; and several grandnieces and greatgrandnephews. She attended Chesbrough Seminary (now Roberts Wesleyan College) and Seattle Pacific College as well as receiving a bachelor’s degree from Greenville College (IL) and a master’s degree from Syracuse University. Esther taught high school English at Lottsville, Pennsylvania and at Roberts Junior College in North Chili, before moving to Winona Lake, Indiana to begin a 30-year career in editing Christian Education materials for the Free Methodist Church of North America. She also authored “The Bishop and His Lady,” a biography of B. T. Roberts, the founder of the school that later became Roberts Wesleyan College. At age 64, Esther retired and married for the first time, becoming a wife, mother, and grandmother all on the same day. She and her husband Dan moved to Spencerport in 1988 and then to Churchville in 2000. Esther was a woman of strong Christian faith and a long-time member of Pearce Memorial Free Methodist Church in North Chili, where she was active in the seniors’ group, as well as in SCOR (Senior Citizens of Riga), until the last few months. For several years she was a volunteer tutor in the OASIS reading program at Fairbanks Road Elementary School (Churchville-Chili). Esther’s Funeral Service will be held Saturday, October 22 at 3 p.m. at Pearce Memorial Free Methodist Church, 4322 Buffalo Road, North Chili. Interment private.

Dale C. Ellison On October 8, 2016 Dale C. Ellison, age 57, died unexpectedly at home in Alden. Dale was a dedicated worker. He enjoyed boating, fishing, dirt bikes, snowmobiling and large bonfires. He leaves behind three children, the center of his world; Amber, Cody and Dustin Ellison; mother, Mary Ann Fleming (Tom); two brothers, Lee Ellison and Brian Masters; two grandchildren, Faith Ellison and Troy Ellison. There will be no funeral service. A celebration of Dale’s life will be held at Hamlin Beach State Park. Area 3 on Friday, October 21, from 3 to 7 p.m. Memorial donations to Dale’s children would be appreciated.

Leonard retired from Rochester Products. His Funeral Service was held October 15 at Walker Brothers Funeral Home, Spencerport. Interment in Fairfield Cemetery. •Cassin, Mary Lu, RN (Doyle), died October 4, 2016 after an extended illness. Predeceased by her parents Helen and Arthur, husband Michael, son Jerry, and brothers-in-law Walter Tymkin and Robert Diehl. Survived by her sons John (Sandra) and James; sisters Noreen Tymkin, Sharon Diehl; grandson, Brian Cassin; nephews, Keith Tymkin, Robert Diehl; niece, Mary Beth Tymkin; along with many cousins, the members of The “A Team”, and special friends. She worked many years as a nurse at Greece Central Schools and The Jewish Home, along with volunteering at St. Joseph’s House of Hospitality, Unity Hospital, and Monroe County Special Olympics. Neighbors celebrate 50th anniversary of clambake Neighbors have come and gone on the east end of Dunbar Road in Hilton but some traditions have been carried on. Residents on Dunbar Road recently celebrated the 50th year of the neighborhood clambake with over fifty adults gathered together at Rich and Chris Losey’s residence, where neighbors enjoyed an evening of great food, music, conversation and a walk through memory lane with pictures posted from the past fifty years. The first clambake started in 1966 when a small group of neighbors (The Dills, Strongs and Lippincotts) decided to steam some clams and spend an evening together reminiscing about the summer. The following year others joined in and before long neighbors all the way to Collamer Road attended. Neighbors generously open up their garages for the event and the special equipment (built many years ago by the Coca Cola Plant in Rochester) is fired up for steaming the clams, barbecuing chicken, boiling the salt potatoes and corn and simmering a special clam broth recipe. Piles
of shrimp and many hors d’oeuvres are enjoyed as people await the steamed clams. Everyone enjoys catching up in conversation, meeting new neighbors, playing cards and Pictionary, and a great campfire at the close of the evening. Dick Lippincott was honored as the only neighbor who attended the first clambake and has only missed one or two years of attending to date. He acknowledged the leadership of Pat and Tony Pearce over the years that really kept things going. Dick has not only stored all the equipment for years but also has, along with his son, Tom, taken leadership in steaming the clams and doing the grilling and cooking. Residents on Dunbar Road once again look forward to the 51st Neighborhood Clambake. Monica A. Cosgrove Hilton

by Kristina Gabalski Though more than 150 years separates them, a group of Albion Middle School students Saturday, October 8, felt very close to a local Civil War soldier who died during the Battle of Gettysburg. Students in Tim Archer’s service learning classes lead a program to unveil a historical marker at Hillside Cemetery in Clarendon in honor of Herbert Charles Taylor, the only known Civil War soldier from Orleans County to die at Little Round Top on July 2, 1863, when Company A of the 140th New York Volunteers relieved the 16th Michigan Infantry. The project actually began last year when Archer’s then 7th graders, “researched Civil War soldier from Orleans County,” Archer explains. “In our research, we discovered that Herbert Charles Taylor of Holley fought and died at Gettysburg.We think he is the only one from Orleans County to do so. As such, we petitioned the Pomeroy Foundation for a grant to cover the cost of a historical marker. It arrived in July.” The fact the maker arrived over the summer meant that the students had to wait until this fall for the dedication. She explains that she visited the class last year to discuss the project and noted the students were “very engaged” in the process which enabled them to “get their hands” on the project and “get some results.” “It’s been awesome to work with the kids,” Ierlan says. “The sign will be there and they can show their children and grandchildren. It’s nice to get them interested when they are this age.” Herbert Charles Taylor was only 20 years old when he died. He is buried at Hillside Cemetery. The dedication ceremony on October 8 included remarks by Melissa Ierlan and Matthew Ballard, a Memorial Poem, Earl Schmidt of the Orleans County Veterans Services Agency, Fjolla Bela of the Pomeroy Foundation and a gun salute by members of the American Legion and the 140th Volunteer Infantry Re-enactment Group.
