Prison inmates train dogs to help local veterans by Tami Raco Pals4Pets has been rescuing dogs from death row for the past 20 years. Laurie Norsen, founder of Pals4Pets, in conjunction with her volunteers have placed over 15,000 abandoned dogs into loving homes. Laurie began Pals4Pets when she was helping to place abandoned dogs recovered by the Orleans County Animal Control. In 2012 one of the worst tornadoes in United States history left a path of destruction in West Liberty, Kentucky leaving many dogs displaced and roaming the streets. This crisis led Pals4Pets to begin working with disaster relief dogs. Laurie and her crew began working closely with the dog shelters in the area to help rescue the displaced dogs by getting them adopted into homes in Western New York. In 2016, while Laurie was picking up dogs in Kentucky, she learned about a program called Wags to Riches. The program takes homeless dogs from death row to the Eastern Kentucky Correctional Facility Dog Training Program. Inmates, who often are on death row themselves, can participate in the program to train dogs to be

The program is available to inmates who are on the honor block, which means they have to meet a certain criteria of good behavior to participate. The inmates have the dog for six to 12 weeks and work closely with their dog following a dog-training program that teaches them to become a good companion dog. Inmates who participate in the program are given awards based on how well the dog is trained and socialized. The program has been successful in helping to calm inmates and reduce fighting and violence in the prison. According to Laurie, the program also helps bring a sense of purpose to the inmates as they build relationships with the dogs and help them transform into good social pets. After Laurie saw the dogs that came from this program she wanted to help place the companion dogs with a sector of society that she felt could most benefit - veterans. In 2016 Laurie and Pals4Pets began fostering select dogs that graduated from program bringing them here to Western Monroe County for placement, free of charge, with veterans in the area. Pals4Pets accepts applications from veterans for a companion dog. Upon interviewing they do their best to match the right veteran with the right companion trained dog. Veterans who struggle with PTSD and other implications from their service can often benefit greatly from the loyal companionship of a dog. “This is our way to say thank you to our veterans,” Laurie said. Pals4Pets has already placed ten companion dogs with local veterans. In some cases the veterans take the dog onto further training to become a full service dog. One of the veterans who received a dog from Pals4Pets has even trained his dog to parachute and rock climb with him. “It’s a win-win,” Laurie said. A dog gets a second chance in life, an inmate gets the opportunity and experience of a positive bond with a dog, and to feel the sense of purpose of helping the dog go on to a better life. And lastly a veteran who may be struggling with loneliness or PTSD can share their life and love with a loving four legged friend. Pals4Pets will have new prison trained dogs at the end of September and will be placing them with veterans. Applications are now being taken for veterans who are interested in a companion dog. Pals4Pets also helps place dogs in special needs homes, Seniors 4 Seniors programs, as well as
family pet adoptions. To meet a volunteer from Pals4Pets and to see the dogs available for adoption, stop by Pet Friendly located on Manitou Road in Hilton Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The organization is always in need of volunteers and donations and pet supplies. Brookdale Senior Living Solutions in Brockport hosted its Third Annual Memory Walk on September 9. They have been holding this walk to kick off Assisted Living Week each year. Residents and staff of both Brookdale’s Assisted Living and Memory Care participated in the walk in support and tribute to those dealing with Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia, and in memory of residents who have been lost to those diseases. There was an amazing turn out this year as residents, their families, staff and the local community joined together to show their support. Volunteers from The College at Brockport’s Women Rugby team helped with a basket raffle. The event raised just shy of $1,000. All fundraising dollars will go to the Alzheimer’s Association when Brookdale staff joins other supporters in the Batavia Walk to End Alzheimer’s on September 22. Provided photos.

Hamlin deaths being investigated as double homicide The Monroe County Sheriff ’s Office (MCSO) is investigating two deaths that occurred at 87 King Street, Hamlin between September 9 and September 10 as a double homicide. Two bodies were found late Monday morning in a car that had been destroyed by fire. Both victims received gunshot wounds, but a specific cause of death has yet to be released in order to preserve the integrity of the investigation. The victims, 20-year-old Alexander Burrow of Clarkson and 18-year-old Bruce Kane of Sweden, were both graduates of Brockport Central School District. Kane graduated in June and Burrow in 2016. Both had been members of the swim team. The charred vehicle discovered at the scene was a red Ford Focus four-door sedan that was registered to the Kane family. Investigators are asking anyone who may have seen that vehicle, or witnessed anything in the vicinity of Lake Road and King Street, Hamlin between 11 p.m. on
September 9 and 1:30 a.m. on September 10 to call the MCSO Tip Line at 585-753-4175 or 911 with information that could aid the investigation. Specifically, investigators would like to talk to the driver of a dark-colored pickup truck who made a U-turn on Lake Road in Hamlin. The truck was last seen on Lake Road near Crosby’s convenience store between the• hours defined above. The Monroe County Sheriff ’s Victim Assistance unit is working with the families of the deceased. “Along with the community, we are troubled by this horrific crime,” said Monroe County Sheriff Todd K. Baxter. “As from the onset of the investigation, we will continue to put forth every resource necessary to help solve this case in an effort to bring those responsible to justice.”
Brockport Police report Between September 2 and September 8, the Brockport Police handled 558 calls for service (15,448 to date) to include five harassment/fight/assault reports, four family trouble reports, 171 special attentions, and conducted 95 traffic stops. Note that the above calls do not represent all of the calls received by the Brockport Police. It should be noted that not all of the calls are found to be as dispatched once on scene. Community message With College back in the full swing, the Brockport Police wants to remind everyone to drink responsibly and to act appropriately when walking around the Village. If you know you are going to visit the bars, it is important to have arrangements in place to get home safely. With the existence of ride sharing (i.e. Uber and Lyft), no one has an excuse to drink and drive. The Brockport Police is an active department
with the STOP DWI program and increases patrols to catch drivers who are intoxicated. The Brockport Police also wants to remind everyone of Brockport Village Code 4-5a which prohibits people from walking around with open containers of alcohol. On the same note of walking around the village, we urge people to take into consideration other residents who are sleeping in the overnight hours and to not cause a disturbance by talking/yelling loudly. The Brockport Police also continues to respond to overnight larcenies from vehicles. We want to urge everyone to make sure that all your vehicles are locked at night and when it is parked in the driveway. C-C receives $637,540 for classroom technology New York State Senator Michael H. Ranzenhofer announced the approval of Churchville-Chili School District’s Smart School Investment Plan, including $637,540 for classroom technology. The funding is part of the Smart Schools Bond Act. “Our children have unlimited potential to succeed, but only if our school districts get their fair share of state dollars,” said Ranzenhofer. “This investment will turn that potential into reality by ensuring Churchville-Chili School District gets the best resources to foster student success in a global economy.” Schools can invest these funds in classroom technology, school connectivity and high-tech security upgrades to better prepare students for success in the 21st century.
“We are so grateful for the opportunity to receive funding from the Smart Schools Bond Act. These funds are providing Chromebooks for students in grades 2 through 12, as well as opportunities to enhance network and wireless infrastructure and place interactive flat panels in all of our classrooms. This provides equitable access and engaging learning experiences while preparing our students to become resourceful citizens in an interconnected global society,” said Churchville-Chili School District Superintendent Lori Orologio. “Stage Whispers” talk with Kevin Curtis from Geva’s Production of Hair With its “groovy,” American tribal love-rock musical vibe, Hair seems mired not only in a different decade but - at this point - a different century. Yet, if you look at the activism depicted onstage and consider movements such as #MeToo or #NeverAgain, it is obvious that today’s youth still want to have their voices heard, albeit using different tactics than their forebears. And everyone wants to sing those songs, including “Aquarius,” “Let the Sunshine In,” and “Good Morning, Starshine.” Kevin Curtis is a part of the “Tribe,” as the ensembles of productions of Hair are called, and also serves as the dance captain for the production currently being performed at Geva Theatre Center. He has his Kevin Curtis
own ideas about the show’s relevance, and the way dance is utilized to express the freedom that is sought in the show. He will share those thoughts at the first installment of the Department of Theatre and Music Studies’ Stage Whispers: Conversations with Theatre Professionals of the year. His talk entitled, “Long, Beautiful Hair: The CrossGenerational Reach of America’s Favorite Tribal Love-Rock musical,” will take place on Thursday, September 27 at 10 a.m. in The College at Brockport’s Tower Fine Arts Center Black Box Theatre, 180 Holley Street. The event is free and open to the public. Curtis is making his Geva debut in Hair, and has appeared in the national tour of A Chorus Line and the offBroadway production of Invisible Thread. Ogden Farmers’ Library presents special ghost-themed show Ogden Farmers’ Library is hosting a professional ghost-themed show, “New York Spirits,” for the community on Thursday, October 4 at 7 p.m. The show is part of the library’s efforts to encourage adults to read more. “New York Spirits” is presented by international entertainer/educator Cris Johnson and will feature spooky subject matter, strange artifacts and props, unusual happenings, audience participation, and more.
The show is intended for adults as well as any thrill-seeking teens. “This particular program is something different – it was designed to promote more reading among adults,” Communications and Technology Library Assistant Patrick Montanaro explains. “The show will feature the history of ghosts in New York subject matter such as The Amityville Horror House, the spiritualist Fox Sisters, Fort William Henry Museum, The Red Coach
Juanita Link brings her art to the Parma Public Library Gallery The Parma Public Library welcomes artist Juanita Link to its Gallery for her September show. Link, a native of Buffalo and now a resident of Parma, is an award winning artist who has been doing art most of her life. In high school her art teacher encouraged her by making her art-editor of the yearbook. After high school she took classes at the Albright Art School and the University at Buffalo. After a hiatus to raise her family, she enrolled in continuing education classes, joined the Suburban Rochester Art Group in 1982 and served as their membership chairperson for many years. She is also a member of the Genesee Valley Plein Air Painters. In her quest to constantly gain insight, she has taken workshops with many well-known artists including Judy Soprano, John Piesley, Jean Stephens, Kathleen Giles, Vera Curnow, Harriet Bing Thayer, and Chris Kulupski.
The subjects of her oils and watercolors embrace many themes from landscapes, seascapes and still-lifes to florals. More than a few times, viewers have been heard to say, “I feel like I could walk into them.” Link has been painting continuously for the last 40 years and has exhibited in many local and regional shows and has work in many private collections throughout the US, England and Spain. Link says of her work, “It is my mission to create something that speaks to others that they may want to place in their space and enjoy.” Link’s show is the eighty-fourth in a series of exhibits hosted by the Parma Public Library which feature area artists. Proposed legislation a sham In an “Opinion” letter from William Fine of Brockport (Suburban News and Hamlin-Clarkson Herald, September 2, 2018) he admonishes State Senator Joe Robach for not supporting legislation identified as S4363. (www.nysenate.gov/ legislation/bills/2017/s4363). I encourage people to go to the website and read the legislation. It’s a four page governmental boondoggle of typical legislative jargon but some points are clear. It would form yet another government entity named the “New York State Firearm Violence Research Institute” with an initial budget of two million dollars. The research would be handled through our university system and guided by appointees of the Governor and Democrat Majority in NY government (only two members appointed by the minority). How you get any unbiased research out of that is beyond me. I want to state I understand that no one who hasn’t experienced it can possibly understand how strongly victims of gun violence and their families want to do something to end gun violence. As do those affected by any senseless taking of life or injury. Strong laws enforced by strong judges and lengthy sentences for gun related crimes are the strongest deterrent to such crimes and always will be. That covers criminals but not outright crazy people. Acts of crazy people can’t be legislated away and aren’t likely to be resolved by gun violence research. Taking guns away from responsible citizens only increases the danger to all of us. Criminals and crazies love a “soft target.”
Lastly, I would suggest Mr. Fine not use words like “epidemic” incorrectly. Gun violence is heavily reported by the media and has become a hot button issue for politicians but it is not an epidemic and stating that it is makes Mr. Fine less credible. Jack Antinore Clarendon

No one is suggesting we have open borders. No one is suggesting we disobey laws. Sanctuary cities is a term suggesting limited cooperation between local government and federal agents with Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agents. Asking local police departments to divert limited resources
to enforce immigration policies opens the door for local police departments to enforce federal tax policies. It takes resources away from needed services. Sweden sets fall brush pick-up week Sweden will conduct its annual fall brush pick-up Monday, October 29 through Friday, November 2. All brush must be placed at the roadside by 7 a.m. on October 29 and no sooner than October 26. Brush must be no longer than six feet and placed parallel to the road. This is a brush only pick-up. Residents should use caution when placing brush near storm drains.
Residents may also drop brush off at the highway garage during normal business hours. In addition, a highway truck can be made available for large volumes of brush throughout the year. Hunter Education course offered in Brockport A Hunter Education course is being offered at the Conservation Club of Brockport, 291 Ladue Road, Brockport, on Thursday, October 11 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. and Saturday, October 13 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Interested students may register on-line through the NYS DEC https://www.dec. ny.gov/outdoor/92267.html. Young Hawks netters building by Warren Kozireski With only three seniors on the roster and starting one sophomore and one freshman, Holley’s girls’ volleyball team is lacking in experience at the start of this season, but they gave notice in a loss to Attica that they are gaining confidence quickly. The Hawks offense managed to generate just one point from their offense in a 25-12 loss in the first game, but that changed in the second. Junior Jade Hoffarth and senior Jocelyn Chilton each had one kill and junior Ava Parr added an ace to help Holley take a 4-2 lead. Kills from Rachel Howard and Parr kept the game tied before Hoffarth had a kill and Parr an ace to put the Hawks ahead 15-13.
But they managed just an additional kill by Hoffarth in a 25-20 loss. Attica never trailed in the third game, but kills by Chilton and Howard along with an ace by senior Nicole Mrzywka kept it close early. Attica later built a five-point advantage before Holley came out of a timeout and got aces from freshman AJ Botello, Chilton and Mrzywka along with kills from Parr and Mrzywka to close to within 23-21 before falling on a pair of service errors. “We’re a little young, but this group never gives up and has good energy,” Holley head coach Kate Conner said. Mrzywka finished eight digs and two aces, Parr had two kills, two aces and two digs while Botello added six assists.

Saints convincing win by Warren Kozireski Buoyed by great defense and taking advantage of their opponent’s mistakes, Churchville-Chili defeated visiting Spencerport in boys volleyball for the first time in at least five years 25-21, 19-25, 25-16, 25-23. The Saints never trailed in the first game as senior John Munding had three kills while John Keele and Matteo Ventura each added two. Leading 21-16, Spencerport closed to within one point of the lead on two consecutive kills and two consecutive aces by senior co-captain Erick Jackson. But a Munding kill stemmed the rally. The Rangers returned favor and never trailed in the second game as they built a six-point lead on a block by setter Colton VanBrederode, kills by Alex Caton and Kiernan Crowley along with one kill and one ace by Jackson. Churchville-Chili rallied back in third game outscoring the Rangers 15-6 after the score was tied 10-10. Ventura, Joe Wolke
and Truman Benz each had kills with Caleb Smith adding an ace to help build the lead with Griffin Stella finishing off the game with one kill and one block over the final four points. The fourth and final game was intense as the Saints built and lost a four-point lead. With the score tied 16-16, Benz had a key kill to give the Saints the lead, but again the Rangers battled back to tie the contest 21-21. Again a two-point Saints lead and again the Rangers tied it 23-23 on kills by Jackson. But a Stella kill ended any hopes for another comeback. Churchville-Chili’s defense kept them in the match led by junior John Bagley’s 20 digs. Wolke had 24 assists with Stella and Keele each finishing with three kills, one block and one ace. Ventura had seven kills and Munding six for the 3-1 Saints. Spencerport’s Jackson had 18 kills and seven aces with Crowley next with 11 kills and Sam Lane adding seven. VanBrederrode dished out 38 assists.

Brockport seeks input for Comprehensive Plan update The Village of Brockport, with the assistance of the Comprehensive Planning Committee, is in the beginning of a year-long planning process, led by Ingalls Planning, to update their comprehensive plan. Right now, they are in an information gathering stage to ascertain what the community is thinking about issues and opportunities facing the village. The community is invited to attend an open house on September 27 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Brockport Village Court, 49 State Street, Brockport. This will be an informal drop-in style open house with
vision boards, places to identify issues, opportunities and assets, and stations with laptops or tablets for electronic surveys. There will also be the opportunity for informal conversation with the planners and committee members. There will be additional opportunities for public input as the village moves forward. Information gathered will inform the conversation and resulting plan. The final report/recommendation from Ingalls Planning will be made public. Celebrate homecoming with Brockport CSD Community members are invited to join Brockport Central School District for its annual homecoming celebration on September 28. Each school will participate in a variety of events leading up to homecoming, including pep rallies and themed days throughout homecoming week. The community event commences at 5 p.m. on September 28 with the fourth annual homecoming festival. Food trucks, face painting, carnival games and a local DJ will be set up in front of Brockport High School through 7 p.m. The homecoming parade begins at 5:30 p.m., where it will make its way from A.D. Oliver Middle School to Dahn Walrath Stadium. Each high school class will decorate a float according to this year’s theme: Music Through the Decades. Seniors, juniors, sophomores and freshmen will represent
the 1980s, 1970s, 1920s and 1950s, respectively. A multitude of bands, clubs, sports teams, alumni and other community groups will also march in the parade. To enter a float or become a parade sponsor, fill out a form posted on the district website at www. bcs1.org/homecoming. The homecoming festivities will conclude with the varsity football game against the Hilton Cadets, which kicks off at 7 p.m. in the Dahn Walrath Stadium. Parking for the homecoming events will be available throughout the village and on the district campus. Attendees are encouraged to wear blue and white to show school pride. Jesse the Therapy Dog earns Remarkable Volunteer Award by Dianne Hickerson

Jesse the Therapy Dog is pleased to be recognized by Therapy Dogs International with their Remarkable Volunteer Award. Jesse volunteers every Monday at Elderwood of Lakeside at Brockport with his mommy, Dianne Hickerson. This award signifies the completion of 250 documented therapy visits. You are probably wondering what Jesse does as a therapy dog and how he helps the residents of Elderwood. Each week he amazes me with his ability to bring comfort and happiness to the people there. He greets each resident with a wag of the tail, or a gentle paw shake, or places his head on their lap. A visit from Jesse brightens their day, lifts their spirits, and brings smiles to their faces. Many of these residents spent a lifetime loving their canine companions, and they miss their pets. It has been proven that petting, touching, and talking to dogs can lower people’s blood pressure, relieve stress, and ease depression. Jesse brings all these benefits to “his people.” One week, Jesse was asked to visit a resident who had suffered a stroke and had difficulty speaking and using her right arm. When Jesse entered her room she seemed to forget about her infirmities, and she reached out with her right arm to pet Jesse, and she spoke to him with ease.
The therapist was amazed. Jesse reacts differently to each person he visits. One resident was feeling depressed, so Jesse immediately went to her bedside, jumped up with his front paws on the edge of the bed, and began giving puppy kisses on both cheeks. The resident started to laugh and continued laughing until she was nearly crying. It was just so unexpected and so funny. I told Jesse to get down, and that he had given enough kisses, but the resident insisted that he stay right where he was, and said, “I haven’t laughed like that in years. Thank you so much!” One resident said about Jesse, “I love it when Jesse visits. It makes my day. I look forward to seeing him every Monday.” Jesse races into her room every week, with his tail wagging, always eager to see her. And I can see the smile light up her face! Jesse sometimes thinks up games to play with the residents. He often stubbornly refuses to leave their room, making them laugh and feel loved. Jesse looks forward to Mondays just as much as the residents of Elderwood. He chooses a scarf from his vast collection, jumps into the car, and heads to Elderwood, eager to see his friends and receive their attention and affection. He has been visiting for more than five years and loves each and every one of “his people.”

The Hilton Central Schools Teachers Association (HCSTA) 2018-19 Teacher of the Year Award was presented at the annual staff convocation at Hilton High School in September. This year’s honoree is Kendrick Krause, Hilton High School math teacher, who is described by staff and families as always putting students first. Krause joined the district in 1996 and has taught many of the math courses offered at Hilton High School, along with computer science. He has also served as 7 to 12 math coordinator, K to 12 testing coordinator and athletic coor-

Nominees must have more than five years of exceptional service to the district, active involvement in the Hilton community, and have made a substantial impact on the lives of their students and colleagues. Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C,I-Batavia) announced there are still a few spots remaining for this year’s Patriot Trip to Washington D.C. from September 20 through 23. Veterans who have attended a previous year’s trip or live outside the 139th Assembly District are now welcome to sign up. Hawley is a longtime supporter of veterans and has served on the Assembly Veterans’ Affairs Committee since 2006. “Every year I look forward to the Patriot Trip,” said Hawley. “I find it to be a great way to thank our veterans for their service and for them to connect with each other.
Genesee County 4-H’ers demonstrate pork knowledge at NYS Fair Members of the Genesee County 4-H Swine Club competed in the Youth Swine Competitions at the 2018 New York State Fair. Melissa Keller, Ben Kron, and Chase Zuber each exhibited Market Hogs and Breeding Hogs in the 4H/youth swine competitions. In addition to competing with their hogs, youth members were also able to participate in many other knowledge contests and public presentations. Each contest awards points to the youth’s overall score, those points were then used to award Empire Youth Swine Scholarships. The scholarships were presented by the New York Pork Producers.
