OPD provides holiday help to victims of domestic violence by Tami Raco On December 7, Ogden Police Chief Mears loaded his SUV full of new toys and clothing for delivery to the Willow Domestic Violence Center in Rochester. The Ogden Police Department participates in the annual Willow Domestic Violence Purple Box Campaign. The Purple Box Campaign allows police agencies, businesses and other community groups to take up a collection of new clothing and toys throughout November to be donated to the Willow Domestic Violence Center. Items are donated by officers, town employees and the local community and go towards helping the families displaced by domestic violence during the holiday season. This is Mears’ second holiday season as Chief of Police heading up this initia-

tive. Mears was absolutely overwhelmed by the response this year. According to Mears, the amount collected by the community was three times more this year than last year. Not only did the donated items fill the purple tote but also the remaining items filled Mears’ entire SUV full of gifts. “It was so moving to see the generosity from our community,” said Mears. The Purple Box campaign began exclusively with local law enforcement agencies five years ago and has grown into an annual program where all can participate Willow Domestic Violence Center offers a range of emergency and non-emergency support services for victims of domestic violence. The services are free and completely confidential. For more information on the Willow Domestic Violence Center, visit https://willowcenterny.org/.

St. Luke’s Episcopal Church blesses it forward Church donates books to Oak Orchard Health to support child wellness

Rhyn McDevitt, Director of Business and Fund Development, and Jim Cummings, Chief Executive Officer, Oak Orchard Health, receive wellness books from Bill Plews, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. Provided photo.

St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Brockport is sharing its blessings by donating copies of the book What To Do When Your Child Gets Sick for use by Oak Orchard Health clients. St. Luke’s purchased the books, in both English and Spanish, to serve the diverse client population at the health center. St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Vestry voted to donate the cost for the books, making this valuable resource available for parents of young children, assisting them in making informed decisions on the health and well being of their family. Oak Orchard Health’s Chief Medical Officer Jim Cummings and Director of Business and Fund Development Rhyn McDevitt were on hand to receive the books from Bill Plews, vestry member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. “St. Luke’s has a long history of serving the people of the Village of Brockport and surrounding area. This gift to Oak Orchard

Health is just one of the many ways our Parish seeks to serve our neighbors,” said Linda Kruchten-Merring, member of St. Luke’s vestry who initiated the book project, now in its second year. St. Luke’s houses the Brockport Ecumenical Clothing Center, the Brockport Ecumenical Food Shelf, serves new moms in need through its North Porch program, and opens its “kitchen” door the second Sunday of each month, serving up a free meal to anyone who would like to join in for food, fellowship and fun through the church’s Harvest Kitchen. St. Luke’s also hosts local Girl and Boy Scout Troops and other non-profit groups. For more information about St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and its programs, contact St. Luke’s at 637-6650 or via e-mail at stlukes@frontiernet.net. Community holiday spirit abounds at Byron-Bergen CSD The Byron-Bergen Central School District community has done an amazing job of providing assistance to families during the holidays for years. The B-B community members, administrators, faculty, staff and students donated toys and games, clothing items, rolls of wrapping paper, boxes for wrapping gifts and over 1,000 non-

perishable food items. In addition, close to $3,500 was donated by the community, administrators, faculty and staff so they could purchase gifts for families in need from the school district. Other area businesses help out by “adopting” families/individuals to get gifts for. All the food items were picked up by

the local Hesperus Lodge No. 837 Free & Accepted Masons for sorting and packing into close to 100 food baskets for local families, with several community, Board of Education, and school district employees pitching in to help. Sponsors of this holiday good will were organized by Hesperus Lodge No. 837 Free & Accepted Masons and coordinated

by Dick Sands; and include the faculty, staff and students of Byron-Bergen CSD; the Byron-Bergen community members and area businesses. The Masons and school volunteers delivered the food baskets and gifts December 17. All involved truly believe in the magic of the holiday season. Provided information

Away for Christmas I’ll be home for Christmas, you can plan on me Please have snow and mistletoe ... by Leisa Strabel

Sara’S Garden

My first experience with “Christmas away” nearly happened at the age of 20. Luckily, I made it home to Clarendon, New York from Boston, Massachusetts just before midnight on Christmas Eve. The longing to be home for Christmas was strong. We had been in Boston for almost a year. I couldn’t wait to be home and enwrapped in all things familiar, including and maybe especially, Christmas traditions. I had hand stenciled the lyrics to I’ll Be Home for Christmas in a card to my parents as a promise to them and myself. Originally recorded by Bing Crosby in 1943, the song was a tribute to soldiers far away from home during World War II. My pangs to be home for Christmas paled compared to the pangs felt by service members of any era. After all, I was safe and warm in a Boston apartment and could call home anytime (albeit via long distance on a land line). Still in 1982, being away for Christmas was not where I wanted to be. Over the ensuing 34 years I’ve learned that “being away” for Christmas comes in many different forms…and that no one escapes. Whether it’s a death, military service, finances, a job, sharing with inlaws, a special vacation; none of us always makes it home for Christmas surrounded by everything and everyone that makes it home. My brother’s 22-year career as a Marine Corps officer kept him away from home for many Christmases. In 1999, he brought his wife and one-year-old daughter to Clarendon for Christmas. It was the last time my parents and their three children would be home together for Christmas; we didn’t know it would be my mother’s last. As with most families, my mom was the core of Christmas – the keeper of traditions, the holiday organizer extraordi-

naire, the love light that gleams …. But perhaps, somehow we did know it would be the last – the pull to be home, to be together, was especially strong that year. I don’t have a single friend who hasn’t had a Christmas away in some sense. Even people who choose to be away from home for the holidays admit to feeling the pull. Perhaps it’s an annualized circadian rhythm, that desire to nest at home with our loved ones at Christmas. It can’t only be guilt or a sense of obligation. I’m dreaming tonight of a place I love, even more than I usually do…. We’ve chosen to be away from home for Christmas twice in recent years in order to be with our far-flung children. I’d like to think that I’m their keeper of tradition, even when the traditions are taken on the road. I’d like to think that the nest I built for them is a source of comfort and strength. I’d like to think that they feel the pull of home for Christmas even when they choose to be away. I’ll be home for Christmas if only in my dreams…. Christmas began with a family away from home for Christmas. I can’t imagine anyone wanting to be home more than a young woman heavily pregnant with her first child. Maybe that’s part of the lesson of Christmas, that our desire to be home at this time is natural, eternal, even if not always possible. And although I know it’s a long road back, I promise you….

2017 Glimpses of Greece wall calendars available As of December 1, calendars celebrating the beauty of the Town of Greece and the creativity of its residents are available at both branches of the Greece Public Library on a first-come, first-served basis (one per family). Images featured in the calendar were submitted to the Greece Public Library’s second annual Glimpses of Greece Photography Contest in August 2016. Contest judges included local photographers Robert Bilsky and Jamie Montanus, and Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich. The Friends of the Greece Public Library sponsored the contest, including the printing of the calendar and photography workshops at the library. “With 17 municipal parks and 8 miles of Lake Ontario shoreline, the Town of Greece has something for every resident whether you want to walk, bike, canoe, play on a playground, host a family gathering, play sports or cool off in our Wild Over Water Zone Splash Park,” said Supervisor Reilich. “I would like to thank library staff and the Friends of the Greece Public Library for their coordination and sponsorship of this contest celebrating our great town,” he continued. For questions about calendar availability and next year’s contest, call the library at 225-8951. Provided information

Congratulations to the Ogden Bears 2016 Junior Pee Wee Pop Warner football team for their accomplishments this season. Some highlights include: an undefeated regular season, a Greater Rochester Pop Warner Championship and an invitation to compete in the 2016 Pop Warner Super Bowl Week at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Walt Disney World. They were one of only six participating teams for their level from across the entire United States. They played teams from the States of North Carolina and Washington and finished their Super Bowl Week with a resounding 35-8 victory. Great job to the players, coaches and families for all of their hard work, dedication and support during the 2016 season. Sara’s Garden Center held their second “Ladies’ Night, an evening event of shopping and fundraising, December 7. Raffle tickets were given to attendees who brought in donations; they were asking for items that are rarely turned in (feminine care products, laundry detergents, personal care items, coffee, hearty soups). They used the evening to introduce their customers to other small businesses: two wineries, an organic tea company, a bakery, a wine glass painter and a chocolate maker. The vendors donate a raffle item of their choice (gift card or merchandise), and provide samples for the ladies to enjoy during the event. It was a fun way to reach potential new customers, and reinforce the benefits of buying local, while helping a local cause. Provided photos.

Churchville-Chili seventh-grade band uses music to make holidays brighter The students who began Churchville-Chili Middle School’s seventh-grade band “After-School Practice-AThon are now in 10th grade, said band director Shelley Sadler. “But the belief that music has the power to change lives continues to drive our 45 current band members, too, she said. “Our musicians promised to increase their practice times if sponsors made donations to the Christmas Shoes Project. They spent hours and hours working on their music, and raised enough money to purchase new shoes for 210 children living in poverty.

Over the past four years, the seventh-grade band, with the generous support of the Churchville-Chili community, has helped 1,544 children in the third world receive durable, water-resistant shoes. Shoes may seem like a simple thing, but for many children who have never had them, a pair of shoes is transformational to their health and wellbeing. Once this year’s band members learned about the difficulties many underprivileged children face, they became spirited advocates for the program, run by the Life Today organization. New year will see new environmental book club in Orleans County by Kristina Gabalski Beginning Tuesday, January 3, a new book club hosted at the Hoag Library, 134 South Main Street in Albion, will give participants an opportunity to meet and discuss global and local environmental issues and protecting natural spaces. Jena Buckwell of the Orleans County Soil and Water Conservation District, says the new book club will meet the first Tuesday of each month to discuss an environmentally themed book title. She says the idea for the book club stems from her own love of reading and its ability to give everyone the opportunity to learn, absorb and interpret information in a way that makes sense for them. “Environmental issues are sometimes controversial and highly political,” Buckwell observes, “I feel it’s really important for people to understand the issues and make their own decisions on how to move forward in their own lives, and try to make a positive impact on their community and the environment.” Self-education through reading is a truly powerful thing, she explains. “I aspire to promote that alongside promoting better environmental stewardship throughout our community. People can’t care about issues without understanding them first, and getting more people involved in reading and learning about the environment will hopefully get more people involved in

taking action on environmental issues,” she says. The goal of the program is to expand the understanding of global and local environmental issues in the community, Buckwell says. The book club will run monthly through 2017 and copies of each book will be made available for loan at the Hoag Library courtesy of the Orleans County Soil & Water Conservation District and the Finger Lakes Lake Ontario Watershed Protection Alliance. The first book will be Field Notes from a Catastrophe by Elizabeth Kolbert. Buckwell says the book developed out of an award-winning three-part series on climate change published in The New Yorker. The latest edition includes new chapters which bring the issue up to date and feature ocean acidification, tar sands, and a Danish town that has gone carbon neutral. “A big part of the discussion will be about how issues in the books apply to us on a local level and on how we can address those issues in our daily lives,” Buckwell says. All are welcome, including residents of Monroe and Genesee Counties. The only limitation, Buckwell explains, is that Soil & Water Conservation District books have been donated to the NIOGA Library System. Residents in the Monroe County Library System may need to purchase a copy if their local library does not have them.

Holley schools enters final phase of capital project Holley Central School District will complete its last phase of the Capital Improvement Project by fall of 2017. On December 13, they accepted bids for this third and final phase. By the end of the project, over $30 million of improvements will have been made to district facilities, at zero tax impact to taxpayers. Throughout the phases of the Capital Improvement Project, large transformations have taken place, including a complete renovation of the Middle School/High School (MS/HS) providing a state-of-the-art library media center, auditorium, dining hall and classrooms; and the creation of a new bus loop and student drop off loop. A completely new Transportation Center now houses a bus wash bay, which helps extend the life of the busses and keeps them in better shape. A new football stadium and an all-weather track were installed for the use and enjoyment of all district residents. There are more large transformations planned for the last phase of the Capital Improvement Project in 2017. New tennis courts will be constructed, and some existing tennis courts will be renovated to become basketball courts. This will add another physical education teaching station and allow community use of the courts when school is not in session. Both the MS/HS and Elementary School (ES) will have heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) units replaced, and the ES will have windows and doors replaced, which will increase overall energy efficiency. The ES will have two new playgrounds next year, along with a new bus loop to separate busses from car traffic. “The entire project has provided the district with one of the finest facilities in Western New York, from both an

Once again we are in the season of giving thanks, seeking peace and hoping that the bad things affecting our families and communities find acceptable solutions. There is an evil in our world today which is equal to the historic plagues that affected mankind. It is the scourge of drug addiction and deaths resulting from that. There are few of us who don’t have knowledge of a family member, friend or neighbor who has been affected by the agony of a drug related death. Perhaps we have more awareness of the issue now that our son Peter, after 25 years of forestry and construction related jobs, now has found his niche as a Counselor at a private home for addicted teenaged boys near where he lives in Montana. The youth who come there are largely sent by their families. The home operates on the school year. The youth attend the local school along with residents of the area. Last year when Peter was a new staff member, he wrote of a 16 year old whose grandparents came from their Midwestern city to celebrate Thanksgiving there with him. They enjoyed the food, football games and visiting their grandson. He was doing well and earned a pass to go home for Christmas. Sadly, he convinced his mother that he was drug free/cured, and did not need to go back. Within a week he was using drugs and tried to play games with drug dealers who shot him. He died a few days later. The “score” for this game: one young life lost, several families devastated and 19 and 22 year old men facing life in prison. The discouragement Peter felt was lifted a few days later when another former resident who was registering at a college called and told him, “Pete I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for you.” Since then Peter has completed the courses required to be a Counselor. He recently wrote to our family as follows: “It has been an interesting transition from Staff member to Counseling and as an old cowboy once said, ‘there are a lot of things they didn’t tell me about when I hired on with this outfit.’ Well that applies here and it is not the management’s fault. The sheer amount of time spent talking to parents is amazing. I can understand their struggle, but they soon forget why their kid is in treatment. They expect that one good school grade is a solid reason for them to get a

I look forward to the end of the project, and all the additional benefits it will bring to the students and community. Our long-term goal for the campus is to maintain it as a state-of-the-art school facility and learning environment.” Provided information

home visit pass or other reward. Also it is incredible how much disconnect there is between the parents and their responsibility or impact on their child’s drug use. People baffle me but I know that God wants these kids to have help. The house I am running is doing well. Four of the kids made one of the levels of the basketball team and one is wrestling. There are two who came here with a .8 and 1.3 GPA but now have 2.88 and 3.01 averages, respectively. One of my boys is a 14 year old Native American who has not seen his family in almost a year and phone calls are few. He made Honor Roll and the freshman basketball squad despite having a pellet in his ankle from when his brother shot him! As I left tonight he said, ‘I love you Pete’ and I responded in the same manner. There is simply a bigger reason for helping these kids, despite the frustrations.” As parents and grandparents, we share the frustrations of those who work to turn these young lives around. A “quick fix” would be nice but if there were, the professionals should have discovered it by now. Most addicts didn’t get into the habit all by themselves and won’t get out of it on their own. Maybe the time or season has come for all of us to get involved by letting addicted individuals and their families know that we stand ready to help any way we can. Let’s at least try by understanding, supporting and yes, praying for them.

Sweden pulls controversial proposed special event laws by Kristina Gabalski Leaders in the Town of Sweden have moved to withdraw two proposed laws that would have amended town codes covering special events in the town and defined terminology regarding agribusiness. Sweden Supervisor Rob Carges tells the Suburban News that Councilperson Bob Muesebeck moved during their regular meeting Tuesday, December 13, to withdraw the proposed amendments and council members voted unanimously to do so. The changes drew adamant opposition from town residents, particularly the farming and agribusiness community, during a public hearing December 6. “The board decided it was not worth it to try and unscramble (the proposals),” Supervisor Carges said. “They are now off the table.”

Local growers including Adam and Aimee Mesiti at Five Sons Winery and RG Brewery on West Sweden Road and Paul McCracken at McCracken Farms on White Road, argued that farmers are already regulated by the state and must also go through a permitting process from the Monroe County Health Department whenever they serve food at events. They said if the proposed changes took effect, it could threaten the viability of their farms and businesses. “Farmers have a right to sell their produce in an agricultural district,” Paul McCracken said. Supervisor Carges says there is a possibility the town will consider the topic from a different angle some time in the future. “We may do a re-set, in some ways, from the way it is now,” he says.

Brockport CSD staff join education leaders at White House convention Following recognition from the federal government regarding their work with assessments, three Brockport Central School District staff members attended an exclusive convention in Washington, D.C. on December 7. Director of Teacher and Student Success Suzanne Goff and Instructional Coaches Lisa Montanaro and Kirstin Penders were three of only 100 education leaders invited from around the country to the event titled, “The White House Convening on Better, Fewer and Fairer Assessments.” The convention, which was a collaboration between the White House and Department of Education, aimed to facilitate discussions surrounding ways to improve testing while aligning with the President’s Testing Action Plan, which was released last year. Brockport Central School District’s Strategic Plan has focused on its curriculum design process, including assessment design, for the past three years. The district’s current curriculum and assessment design framework parallels the principles of the President’s Testing Action Plan: worth taking, high quality, time-limited,

fair and equitable, transparent to students and families, one of multiple measures, and tied to improved learning. Brockport attendees say the experience was exceptionally gratifying. “This forum and the assessment experts we dialogued with confirmed for us that our strategic efforts in strengthening our assessment framework is what’s best for the students we serve,” said Director of Teacher and Student Success Suzanne Goff. “This experience has inspired us to continue to make reliable, rigorous and relevant assessment design a priority in our district.” The event featured a wealth of education experts, including Dr. John King, secretary of the U.S. Department of Education, Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, and Gene Wilhoit, director of the National Center for Innovation in Education. Following opening remarks and a panel discussion, attendees split into breakout sessions and discussions. The event concluded with closing remarks from Cecilia Muñoz, director of the White House Domestic Policy Council. Provided information

Christmas Care Packages Are on the Way! As many of you may know, each year we send the proceeds of our annual Halloween Candy Buy Back to Operation Gratitude, an all volunteer organization that assembles individual care packages which are then sent to our troops overseas. Those items are currently being put to use as thousands of packages are shipped overseas just in time for Christmas. Each package sent contains a collection of personal items, candy, and a note from home and each one is addressed and delivered to a specific serviceman or woman.   This year our local contribution consisted of over 200 pounds of candy plus cases of toothpaste, toothbrushes and other personal items for our troops.   I would like to express my gratitude to all the kids, parents and grandparents who brought in donations and to all the businesses and individuals who helped make our local efforts such a big success. This year we received cash donations from individuals, local businesses and organizations to help with shipping costs. This is a wonderful project providing our servicemen and women with gifts that are greatly appreciated, especially at this time of year. If you would like to learn more, please visit the website operationgratitude.com.   Teacher, Shari Carter and her class from Northwood Elementary School in Hilton will be receiving a special recognition from Thompson Dental for collecting the most candy.

Taking a moment off from working on the Christmas party for migrant farmworker families are: (l to r) Doris Valentin, Bill Plews, Irene Sanchez and Ann Jasmin. The party was held at The Center on State Street in Brockport on Saturday, December 10. Photo by Dianne Hickerson.

Farmworker families enjoy festive Christmas Party in Brockport by Doug Hickerson On Saturday afternoon, December 10, The Center on State Street was the scene of a festive Christmas party for migrant farmworker families from western New York. About 200 people enjoyed a buffet feast. Children were entertained with a hula hoop contest and smashing three piñatas, all to the music of a DJ with a sound system and lights. One hundred and twenty children received gifts from Santa Clause. The Western New York Coalition of Farmworker-Serving Agencies hosted the event with support by the Brockport Ecumenical Outreach Committee (BEOC). Organizing the event were Irene Sanchez, president of the Coalition, Bill Plews, vice president of the Coalition

and chairman of BEOC, and Ann Jasmin, on the staff of Oak Orchard Center. Doris Valentin of the Buffalo Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church transported families from western townships. Several students from The College at Brockport helped set up the event. The children also enjoyed large craft tables sponsored by the Genesee Orleans Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse. The Brockport Lions Club tested children’s vision and found several needing an eye doctor. Fidelis Care representatives were present with health insurance information. Bill Plews saw the party as a success. “The event is all about providing a good time for the kids and giving them some nice gifts,” he said. “They enjoyed it and appreciated the gifts they received.”

Hawley announces more than $3.5 million in economic development funds As part of this year’s round of the Regional Economic Development Council’s (REDC) awards, Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C,I-Batavia) announced that more than $3.5 million has been awarded to ten projects in Monroe, Orleans and Genesee counties. The projects include upgrading local infrastructure, comprehensive marketing and economic development studies on various subjects, preservation of historical landmarks and upgrades and expansions of new and existing businesses. “I am pleased to announce this large influx of funding and economic development coming to the 139th Assembly District,” Hawley said. “Attracting new businesses and helping existing ones expand while also keeping a steady eye on our infrastructure needs has been a large focus of mine the past several years. These projects will go a long way toward helping often-neglected municipalities better serve their residents and fund studies that small towns and villages cannot afford but are oftentimes crucial to their development and determining feasibility of projects.” The projects and their award amounts include: •$12,500 - Downtown Batavia Public Market Study: Funds a public market assessment and conceptual market master plan for sites in downtown Batavia. •$1,900,000 - Ellicott Station: The Batavia Development Corporation will assist Savarino Companies with site/infrastructure and building renovation/construction in the downtown Brownfield Opportunity Area. The area will be redeveloped for a mix of retail, entertainment, office and light industrial uses. •$50,000 - City of Batavia Storm Water Capital Plan: Funds will be used to complete a storm water capital plan. •$25,000 - Downtown Batavia Healthy

Living Campus: The City of Batavia will conduct a feasibility study for a comprehensive, multi-purpose health campus to be located in downtown Batavia. •$47,500 - Genesee County Housing Needs Assessment: Funds will be used to complete a housing needs study. •$96,000 - Haunted History Trail of New York State 2017 Initiatives: Grant funds will be used to conduct a conversion/economic impact study for the Haunted History Trail of New York State, which is the first and only statewide paranormal tourism trail in the U.S. •$150,000 - Sysco Western New York Depot: Clear land and build a facility to house delivery management for distribution services. •$499,605 - Village of Albion, Rebuild Bullard Park Project: Bullard Park is a 26-acre village-owned public park located only one block south of the Erie Canal. Bullard Park contains three picnic shelters, two baseball diamonds, a large children’s playground, a basketball court, a hard-surface skateboarding area, a sledding hill and restroom facilities. When Bullard Park is rebuilt, the entire population of Albion will once again have a centerpiece for community functions and a public setting for summer enjoyment. •$30,000 - Village of Medina Inflow and Infiltration: The Village of Medina will complete an engineering report to identify sources of inflow and infiltration and solutions as well as sewer separation opportunities. •$700,000 - The College at Brockport Access to Excellence: The Research Foundation for SUNY and the College of Brockport will renovate the fifth floor of the Rochester Educational Center in downtown Rochester and establish a single point of access to educational, counseling, support services and resources for those affected by poverty. Sick of being sick? Tips to get better and kick that cold to the curb (BPT) - From obligations at work to errands and chores and making time for family and friends - your plate is fuller than ever and, unfortunately, getting sick can throw a major wrench into your marathon of activities and greatly hamper your productivity. Despite how frustrating it can be, your busy life doesn’t come to a halt when you’re sick. That’s why you need to do everything you can to start feeling better faster so you don’t fall too far behind. Take these five steps to help you get back to conquering your full to-do list in no time.

some real relief. The best plan of action? Turn to your pharmacist for expert advice and medicine recommendations. Don’t be afraid to exercise If your symptoms are primarily in your head and neck, you’re generally still healthy enough to exercise. Nevertheless, consider a lighter workout to get the benefits of exercise without putting too much stress on your alreadysuffering body. A brisk walk for 30 to 45 minutes each day while sick is recommended to help you recover. However, be sure to dress appropriately for the climate.

Get plenty of sleep With all of the hustle and bustle of your day, taking the time for sleep may seem impossible, but an established sleep schedule is one of the most important things you can do to support your health. Getting eight hours of sleep is always optimal especially when sick; however sickness can often disrupt our sleep. To help combat symptoms like sinus pressure or a stuffed nose from keeping you up, you can make easy changes like propping yourself up in bed and moisturizing the air with a humidifier or vaporizer. You may find you breathe - and sleep - easier.

systems function adequately - which, in turn, helps your immune system function at its best. With that said, not all drinks are created equal; stay away from caffeinated or alcoholic drinks. These beverages will actually increase dehydration, not relieve it. Being sick can be painful enough without the fear of missing out on important activities, so follow these tips to get back on your feet as fast as possible.

Binge on super foods We all know about the benefits of getting plenty of Vitamin C when sick, but you can also complement its effects by increasing your intake of Vitamins A, E and B6, as well as iron and zinc to help you recover faster. These helpful nutrients can be found in fruits and veggies, like sweet potatoes and carrots, whole grains and lean meats or fish, so don’t be afraid to add more of these foods to your diet when you don’t feel well. Drink up Water, broth or herbal tea - the more hydrated you stay, the better. Fluids not only soothe your throat, but they also ward off dehydration, thin your mucus and help your body
