Spirit of the Season brings community together for children at Golisano
children at Golisano.
Church in Spencerport as well as Stockham Lumber in Holley, Lowe’s in Brockport, and Lake Shore Hardwoods in Victor and Pulaski, which all donated supplies. “I can’t thank them enough,” Tony said. “I get goosebumps when I think of how everyone has come together for this.”
The puzzles are handcrafted from various kinds of wood, including ash, oak, walnut, maple, and cherry. After milling the lumber, Tony runs it through a few rounds of sanding. He
donation includes a chunky, shape-matching puzzle specifically for use in Golisano’s physical therapy department.
The wood is left bare at the hospital’s request as some children have reactions to various topcoat finishes. Because the wood is bare, it requires a lot of sanding to a 220 grit finish to ensure there are no sharp edges. Tony holds sanding parties where volunteers of all ages enjoy fellowship while helping the effort. Sometimes they even gather around a campfire at the end of a hard day’s work.
Once the puzzles are finished, they need to be packaged for gifting. A packing party was held at Trinity Lutheran Church on December 10 to prepare puzzles for delivery to Golisano on December 15. Volunteers placed the assembled puzzles in zipper bags along with a sheet specific to each shape puzzle indicating what wood it is made from and the level of difficulty. On the back is a letter to the patient’s parent or caregiver that explains the project and offers words of support. “Your love is the most powerful medication you can give your loved one. Stay strong in your faith and love. Know that you are not alone in this fight,” it reads, in part. A Christmas greeting is also included, with an angel printed on the back for the child to color.
Tony says that making and donating the puzzles for the children is something he has always had in his heart to do, and he would do it with or without
community support, but it’s incredibly moving to see so many people coming together to pitch in, regardless of political or religious beliefs. “Businesses and a congregation came together in a truly selfless act to help a child to just be a child, and not a sick child,” he said.
This year, Tony is also providing Golisano with small, wooden hearts to be given as a remembrance token to families whose child lost their battle.
“It’s just something they can keep in their pocket. Something to touch and say, ‘I love you’ or ‘I miss you.’” He hopes to get a laser to engrave a message on the hearts for future donations.
Tony hopes to see the project continue to grow, and plans to start making puzzles in July next year. He asks that any businesses, individuals, or groups who would like to help, reach out to him through his business, FHG Custom Furniture and Craft. You don’t need to know anything about woodworking to volunteer. Tony says he is good at providing instruction. “I’ve been teaching Cub Scouts how to use pocket knives for 30 years, and no one has lost an appendage. I’m quite proud of that.”
All are welcome to join the effort – businesses, scout troops, church groups, service clubs, anyone and everyone can contribute in some way. See contact information at www.fhgcraft.com or call 585-794-6310.

Spirit of the Season brings community together for children at Golisano
by Joanne Michielsen photos by Karen Fien
“Children need to be allowed to be children.” That belief is central to a project that has brought area businesses, a church congregation, and families together in the Spirit of the Season to bring some joy to children at Golisano Children’s Hospital in Rochester.
This is the fourth year that Brockport resident Anthony (Tony) Gruttadauro, through his company, FHG Custom Furniture and Craft, has led the effort to create wooden puzzles to donate at Christmastime to the children at Golisano.
It started with 38 puzzles the first year and has grown each year. Thanks to what Tony describes as “just an overwhelming amount of community support,” this year’s donation includes over 170 individual puzzles – gifts for approximately 150 children, as some packets have two smaller puzzles.
The puzzles are fun and therapeutic for the young warrior patients. Having different-sized pieces helps with motor skills to engage cognitive processes. Some of the puzzles are even used in physical therapy treatment.
Tony started working on this year’s project back in August. Major contributors include Trinity Lutheran Church in Spencerport as well as Stockham Lumber in Holley, Lowe’s in Brockport, and Lake Shore Hardwoods in Victor and Pulaski, which all donated supplies.
He then cuts out all the puzzles and does some shaping by hand with a rotary tool. Many are shaped like animals – from cats and dogs to elephants,
donation includes a chunky, shape-matching puzzle specifically for use in Golisano’s physical therapy department.
The wood is left bare at the hospital’s request as some children have reactions to various topcoat finishes. Because the wood is bare, it requires a lot of sanding to a 220 grit finish to ensure there are no sharp edges. New historic marker in Parma
A new historic marker was recently installed at Crosby’s in Parma Center.
It replaces one lost years ago that commemorated the first Methodist Episcopal Church west of the Genesee River. The building was constructed in 1830, but the church organized as early as 1804. In 1883, all the Parma Methodist Churches combined resources and built the Hilton United Methodist Church which is very active today.
The Parma Center two-story brick
church was deconsecrated and became a blacksmith shop.
When automobiles took over, it became a gas station. The only picture the Parma Hilton Historical Society has of the old building is as an early gas station then owned by Bert Rowle and later owned by Norman “Toppy” Feil.
In the 1960s, the building was taken down and K&K convenience store occupied the site. Crosby’s convenience store owns the site today. Provided information

for the winter?
With winter finally upon us all of the municipal highway employees will be busy cleaning the roads for your safe travel. This doesn’t mean that all of the roads will be clean all of the time. Each driver should adjust their speeds for the current conditions that are on each road that you are traveling on. Giving yourself additional travel time will also help you have a safe trip each time you are on the roadways. Driving too fast for road and weather conditions is usually the cause of winter accidents. Also please remember that bridges and overpasses freeze first and when the temperature dips below 20 degrees salt does not work as well. At 10 degrees salt does not work. Please visit our website (www.ogdenny.com) or our Facebook page for further information and if you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact our office at 617-6160. Have a safe winter.

The Christmas Story
by Joanne Dunsmore
Three wise men followed the star where heavenly hosts were seen from afar. Knowing a King was about to be born, came with their gifts, His presence to adorn. Gold, Frankencense, and Myrrh they gave of their treasure.
To worship and honor our savior, his name is Jesus-God being with us. Becoming a man to bring the salvation plan. For His love to display was born on Christmas Day.
Happy Birthday, Jesus!
On December 9, Golden Eagle Athletics donated over $2,500 to the Brockport Toy Shelf. Student athletes also donated gifts for Brockport families. Provided photo.
SUNY Brockport Athletic Department donates $2,500 to BCSD’s toy shelf
Athletes from SUNY Brockport have banded together to raise funds and toys for the Brockport Central School Toy Shelf this year.
On December 9, SUNY Brockport’s Associate Head Athletic Trainer John Jackson and Associate Athletic Director Gil Burgmaster donated over $2,500 on behalf of Golden Eagle Athletics to the Brockport Toy Shelf. Student athletes from the university also donated gifts for Brockport families.
Jackson explains that this is the fifth year the Golden Eagles have supported the Brockport Toy Shelf and they’ve raised over $12,500 for families in the district during that time.
“Tara [Ms. Jackson] told us about a family in need six years ago,” Jackson said. “So, our family got together and adopted a [district] family. We have done this each year since and, the next year, there was such a need that I brought the idea to Brockport Athletics, and they jumped right in.”
Working with SUNY Brockport’s Student Activity Advisory Committee (SAAC) who helps organize many of the collections for the drive, Jackson says he “looks forward to the event every year.”
“I am so proud of our student athletes and how they give back to our
community,” Jackson said. “It’s amazing to be walking down the hall and an athlete will holler to me ‘here’s a few bucks for the kids.’”
According to Barclay Elementary School Counselor Rachel Hume, there are 17 families that Brockport’s Toy Shelf is planning to help this season.
“There is a food program that our school [Barclay] hosts to assist in helping families with bringing food home on a weekly basis,” Hume explains. “Every year, the families on that list are reached out to and asked if they would be interested in any holiday help from the school.”
Barclay teachers and staff will use the funds donated by the Brockport Golden Eagles to provide presents for families.
“We want to ensure our students and their families are able to have a wonderful holiday season,” Hume said. “There are many uncertainties in the world today, and with this drive we are able to make sure that the holidays are not one. We feel so lucky to be able to work with John and the Golden Eagles to assist our Barclay families in making this holiday season a memorable one.”

Avoid overpricingpitfAlls
Determining the list price for your home once you are ready to sell is no small affair. Overpricing is a common blunder committed by many an anxious seller. With so much riding on the outcome of the sale, it's a mistake easily made, but it can be a costly one. When shopping for a home, the majority of buyers consider the price first. Nothing sullies a property's image more than seeing it languish on the market because it was initially overpriced.
There are many reasons sellers mistakenly overprice their homes. Inadequate information and lack of experience cause many people to misinterpret market conditions. Perhaps the owner elected to make expensive improvements with the intention of increasing the property's value, but the renovations cost more than the return on the investment. Or maybe the owner purchased the house at an inflated price and is trying to compensate for overpaying. Sometimes people choose to overprice their home with the intention of bargaining later.
Since properties generate the most consumer interest when they first appear on the market, it is critical to rely on the expertise of a professional real estate agent, who can provide you with a comparative market analysis and help you determine a fair and competitive price for your home.

Ogden holds first annual Christmas tree lighting
On Friday, December 9, the Town of Ogden held its first annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony outside the Town Hall. Town officials and residents enjoyed hot chocolate and candy canes provided by the town, then a group of students and teachers from Spencerport Central School District sang Christmas carols. The evening concluded with the inaugural lighting of the Christmas tree.
“Thank you to everyone who helped make Friday’s inaugural Christmas tree lighting ceremony a success,” said Ogden Town Supervisor Mike Zale. “It was a frigid evening, but that didn’t stop so many of you from
coming out to be a part of the holiday festivities.”
“We knew Christmas on the Canal wasn’t taking place this year, so we wanted to plan something special for residents; it seemed like a Christmas tree lighting ceremony was the perfect choice. I hope our town Christmas tree will bring our community together for many years to come, and I’m excited to see this wonderful holiday tradition grow with it.”
On November 22, the Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance class from BOCES helped town staff plant the Christmas tree outside the Ogden Community Center.

Learning
Exploring the mysteries of ancient Egypt along with the everyday lives of its people is all part of the learning journey undertaken in sixth grade social studies at Churchville-Chili Middle School. This year, the adventure has a new twist: the addition of experiential learning activities to the standard Ancient Civilizations curriculum.
The Churchville-Chili School District has been integrating experiential learning (learning by doing) into required middle school science curriculum for several years, offering
a mummy at Churchville-Chili Middle School
engaging and imaginative enrichment experiences. New hands-on social studies experiments, like this one in Egyptian mummification techniques, are challenging students to delve deeper into cultures and history. By studying mummification, students are asking more questions about this society’s religious beliefs and cultural norms, in addition to testing the scientific principles behind the fascinating preservation practice.
Apples replaced the usual subjects of mummification for the school’s curious sixth graders. “Each student
team chose a combination of three moisture-leaching ingredients, like salt, baking soda, vinegar or silica gel to cover their apple in,” said Enrichment Specialist Andrea Lynch. “Some of them carved faces in their apples or cut out “organs” to see how that would affect their results. Teams chose to either wrap their apple-mummies in gauze or leave them unwrapped.”
Precise measurements were taken of starting weight, and all the apples were put into closed, dark “coffins” (cardboard boxes). “Students will take their mummies out once a week to examine them and collect data on how much mass is being lost,” said Lynch. “After at least four weeks, we’ll compare results and analyze to determine which materials worked the best to dry and preserve the apples.”
The school’s team of enrichment specialists – Lynch, Shannon Barton, Stephanie Ricci and Patti Saucke – are as curious and excited about the final results as any of their students. “This is the first time we’ve tried this,” said Lynch. “We can’t wait to see what happens!”

Hundreds unite to fight heart disease and stroke in women
More than 120 people rocked their red and celebrated the strength of women in the fight against heart disease on Thursday, December 8. The Rochester Go Red for Women Luncheon encouraged attendees to be a relentless force for longer, healthier lives.
The Go Red for Women® Luncheon, held at the Strathallan Hotel & Spa, is the culmination of the year-round Go Red movement. The event, along with year-round activities, raised a total of more than $50,000.
“Now is the time to take back control of your physical health and mental well-being,” said Go Red for Women Chairwoman Ann Leonhardt Caprio, DNP, RN, ANP-BC, FAHA, program coordinator at UR Medicine Comprehensive Stroke Center, University of Rochester Medical Center, Strong Memorial Hospital and Assistant Professor of Nursing, UR School of Nursing. “One in three women are dying of cardiovascular disease, but losing even one woman is too many”
The afternoon’s speakers included Dr. Jaclyn Burch, Assistant Professor of Neurology in the Neurohospitalist Division, and Director of the Inpatient Neurology Floors at UR Medicine, speaking on women and stroke, as well as Beth Russell, Associate Professor of Social Work, Program Director for the Master of Social Work Program, and Co-chairwoman of the Department of Social Work at the SUNY Brockport. Russell spoke about authenticity, creativity and self-care.
The American Heart Association presented the first-ever Go Red for Women Community Leadership
Award to Ginny Ryan. She was recognized for her years as a community leader in the Go Red for Women initiative.
Since 2004, Go Red for Women has had a profound impact on women’s health. As the trusted, passionate, and relevant force to eradicate heart disease and stroke, through the Go Red for Women movement, the American Heart Association remains steadfast and committed to meeting the comprehensive health needs of women — at every life stage.
The Go Red for Women movement is designed to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death for women in the United States, as well as generate funds for lifesaving cardiovascular research for women.

lights to decorate their home. The Firefighter’s Association of New York (FASNY) would like to remind everyone of a few safety tips to enjoy a safe holiday season.
“The holidays bring cheer, love, and joy to New Yorkers each year,” said FASNY president Edward Tase, Jr. “Unfortunately, it historically also brings an increase in home fires. Dry trees, unattended cooking, and forgotten candles can all lead to tragedy. We want all New Yorkers to enjoy a safe and accident-free holiday.”
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), U.S. fire departments responded to an average 160 home fires that started with Christmas trees per year and an average of 7,900 home fires started by candles. From 2014 to 2018, fires caused by candles resulted in an annual average of 81 civilian fire deaths, 677 civilian fire injuries, and $278 million in direct property damage per year.
New York State has the second-most home fire fatalities this year, with 126 deaths, following Pennsylvania with 141. At this time last year, New York had 102 home fire fatalities, fifth-most in the nation.
“Along with our regular safety tips, FASNY would like to encourage New Yorkers to be safe and careful with new gadgets
that may come into the home around the holidays,” said FASNY president Edward Tase, Jr. “Many gifts such as hoverboards, laptops, e-bikes, drones, and toys may contain hazardous lithium-ion batteries. It is important to never leave a device with a lithium-ion battery unattended while charging, and if the battery appears damaged – do not use it!”
Fire risk can occur when these powerful batteries are improperly stored or charged, leading to overheating. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when charging and only use the charging cord that came with the device. If a battery is overheating or has stopped working, move the device away from flammable materials and safely dispose of it. It is not recommended that lithium-ion batteries be disposed of in household trash. Instead, take them to a battery recycling location.
Holiday decorating tips from FASNY and the National Fire Protection Association:
•Be careful with holiday decorations. Choose decorations that are flame resistant or flame retardant.
•Keep lit candles away from decorations and other things that can burn.
•Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use, but not both.
•Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections.
•Use clips, not nails, to hang lights so the cords do not get damaged.
•Keep decorations away from windows and doors.
Fire safety tips for your Christmas tree
•Fresh trees are less likely to catch fire, so look for a tree with vibrant green needles that are hard to pluck and don’t break easily from its branches. The tree shouldn’t be shedding its needles readily.
•Always place your tree away from heat sources like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents, or lights, and keep the tree base filled with water to avoid a dry out.
•Make sure all your indoor and outdoor Christmas lights have been tested in a lab by the UL or ETL/ITSNA for safety, and throw out any damaged lights.
•Any lights you use outdoors must be labeled suitable for exterior placement, and be sure to plug them into a ground-fault circuit interrupter protected receptacle.
•Keep all your holiday candles away from your Christmas tree, surrounding furniture, and décor.
•Don’t forget to turn your Christmas tree lights off each night. Provided information

The meeting was opened by welcome remarks from Post Commander Ken Juergens as he welcomed Deputy NY Department Commander Jim Bojanowski, 7th District Commander Dale Mosher, his staff, and representatives from each county and many posts throughout the area.
Over 90 people attended the meeting, allowing Post 954 to showcase it facilities with the many improve-

Advice for staying healthy this winter
From a surge in RSV cases to COVID and the flu, the news headlines can feel overwhelming. Dr. Lisa Y. Harris, vice president of medical affairs at Excellus BlueCross BlueShield has answers to common questions about RSV and staying healthy this winter.
Q: Dr. Harris, we are hearing a lot in the news about respiratory syncytial virus – or RSV – and how cases are soaring. What is RSV and who should be worried about it?
RSV is a respiratory virus that usually causes mild cold-like symptoms in otherwise healthy children and adults. While this virus is commonly associated with infants or young children, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports anywhere from 60,000 to 120,000 older adults in the United States are hospitalized with RSV each year. For older adults with chronic heart or lung disease – or those with weakened immune systems – RSV can be fatal if it turns into bronchiolitis (lung inflammation) or pneumonia (lung infection).
Q: What are the symptoms of RSV and how does someone know if they need to see a doctor?
Early symptoms of RSV include a runny nose, loss of appetite, a cough which may include wheezing, and sometimes a fever. RSV can make conditions like asthma, COPD, and congestive heart failure worse. You’ll want to see a doctor immediately if you begin to have problems breathing. Also, if after a couple of days your symptoms are getting worse instead of better, you should see your doctor.
Q: We are also hearing a lot about the flu already this year, and we know COVID is still around. What is the latest on those illnesses?
We are in “flu season” from now until at least February. The flu can be serious especially in older adults, young children, pregnant women, and nursing home residents. The CDC recommends the flu vaccine for everyone 6 months and older. This will help protect you as well as anyone who is particularly vulnerable. And while COVID cases are down, you should stay up to date on vaccines to help prevent a more serious infection if exposed. Talk to your doctor if you have questions about which vaccine is best for you. The good news is getting a flu vaccine or COVID booster is as simple as stopping by your local pharmacy. Visit vaccines.gov to find a vaccination site near you.
Q: What’s your best advice for staying healthy this winter?
Stay up to date on your vaccinations. Even if you do get sick, being vaccinated can help keep your symptoms mild. Make sure you wash your hands often for 20 seconds with soap and warm water. Frequently use hand sanitizer when out – maybe carry a sanitizer in your purse or car, too. Many people are choosing to continue to wear masks in public or in large gatherings to help protect themselves and others – this is a great idea especially if you have a weaker immune system. Finally, avoid close contact with people who are sick and stay home if you are not feeling well.
Lisa Y. Harris, M.D., is vice president of medical affairs at Excellus BlueCross BlueShield. She is a fellow of both the American College of Physicians and the American Academy of Pediatrics, and a certified physician executive through the American Association of Physician Leaders. Board certified in internal medicine and pediatrics, Dr. Harris has been in clinical practice since 1995.
Sweden honors retiring ZBA Chairperson
The Sweden Town Board honored retiring Zoning Board of Appeals Chairperson Mary Ann Thorpe at its meeting on December 13. Thorpe has served on the ZBA since 2006 and has been the chair since 2013.
In presenting her with a proclamation, Sweden Supervisor Kevin Johnson also noted her years as trustee, deputy mayor, and mayor of the Village of Brockport and her instrumental role in the construction of the tri-municipal Seymour Library on East Avenue and the search for a community center venue which resulted in the acquisition of the present-day center on Lake Road.
“Not only has Mary Ann been a dedicated public servant to the Town of Sweden,” said Johnson, “but she and her husband, Joseph, have given of their time and resources to many faith, social and community-based organizations.”
Thorpe chaired her last ZBA meeting on Decem-

Spencerport resident releases ninth novel
David B. Seaburn’s latest novel, Give Me Shelter, was released on December 15, 2022. There was a book celebration and reading at Writers and Books in Rochester to note the occasion.
The main characters are a grandfather and his two grandsons. This story is set in 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis, which is giving twelveyear-old Willie sleepless nights. His brother, Denny, has recently left for college. Everything is in flux. There is also a longstanding secret gnawing at the boys. Their parents died nine years earlier and they have never been told how.
Early reviews have been enthusiastic. “Give Me Shelter by David B. Sea-

Greece Town officials look on as the time capsule is placed.
Greece commemorates 2022 with anniversary time capsule
March 22, 2022 marked the 200year anniversary of the Town of Greece. Originally called Northampton, the town was named after the country of Greece, which was fighting a war of independence from Turkish rule. This year, the town has celebrated its history with a variety of events and services for residents that commemorated its two hundred year history and progress as a town and community.
On December 8, Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich and Greece Town Councilmembers Mike Barry, Bill Murphy, Mike Bloomer, and Diana Christodaro, along with Greece Town Deputy Supervisor Michelle Marini and Greece Town Historian Keith Suhr ended the town’s 200th year celebration with the placement and sealing of a time capsule. Greece residents were encouraged to submit suggestions of items to be included in the time capsule that will be enjoyed by future residents, which includes artifacts recommended by residents in response to a survey given last fall.
Included in the time capsule are the following items:
•Letter from Supervisor Reilich to future supervisor
•The 200th Anniversary Logo
•Postage stamp
•Wegmans Supermarket Company receipt •Bank debit card

New laws related to gift cards in effect this holiday season
because of newly signed legislation to protect consumers from exploitative gift card practices, any gift cards or gift certificates purchased in New York State on or after December 10, 2022, will remain valid for a minimum of nine years from the date of purchase. And, when the remaining value of a gift card or gift certificate is less than five dollars, the recipient can opt to receive cash for the balance.
All fees are prohibited under the new law, which will prevent gift cards and gift certificates from declining in value. The law specifically forbids the imposition of any “activation fees, retroactive fees, redemption fees, service fees, dormancy fees, latency fees, administrative fees, handling fees, access fees, periodic fees, renewal fees, re-loading fees, or any other fee of any kind.” There is one exception to the law. A gift card or gift certificate that is redeemable at multiple, unaffiliated merchants or service providers may charge a one-time activation fee, not to exceed $9.
“Gift cards offer consumers convenience during the holidays,” said Secretary of S tate r obert J. r odriguez. “Thanks to Governor Hochul, gift cards now have a longer shelf life and recipients are afforded more time to find the perfect gift to treat themselves as their gift giver intended.”
In New York State, a gift card or gift certificate’s purchase date determines what, if any, rights exist for consumers. For gift cards and gift certificates purchased between September 21, 2004, and August 21, 2010, there is no law requiring a minimum expiration term and a monthly inactivity service fee may be assessed monthly after the 12th month of inactivity. Those purchased between August 22, 2010, and December 24, 2016, cannot expire before five years from the date of purchase, a onetime inactivity fee may be assessed after the 12th month of inactivity, and a monthly inactivity service fee may be assessed after the 24th month of inactivity. Gift cards purchased between December 25, 2016, and December 9, 2022, cannot expire before five years from the date of purchase. A monthly inactivity service fee may be assessed after the 24th month of inactivity, but if the gift
card is presented within three years of the purchase date, any activity fees assessed will be waived and the gift card will be replenished to its value prior to the fees.
Gift cards purchased on or after December 10, 2022, cannot expire before nine years from the date of purchase and inactivity fees are prohibited.
The New York State Division of Consumer protection offers these tips consumers should keep in mind when buying and using gift cards this holiday season:
•research retailers before purchase. Verify the legitimacy of the seller. Check reviews and articles.
•Check packaging. When buying a gift card, consumers should make sure the packaging and security seals are intact.
•Use caution with third parties. Consumers should use caution when buying gift cards from third parties or online auctions, as it may be difficult to verify the dollar amount remaining.
•review the terms and conditions. before purchasing, consumers should always review the terms and conditions to understand what their recourse is if the gift card is lost or stolen. Companies are required to post terms and conditions either on the card or in attached packaging.
•beware of scammers. Scammers often seek payment in the form of gift cards, also known as prepaid cards. Government entities, utilities, and other reputable entities will never call you demanding an overdue bill or debt be paid with a gift card.
Consumers having difficulty redeeming a gift card are encouraged to file a complaint with the New York State Division of Consumer protection. The Division of Consumer protection provides voluntary mediation, between the consumer and business, when the consumer has been unsuccessful at reaching a resolution on their own.
The Consumer Assistance Helpline 1800-697-1220 is available monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., excluding state holidays, and consumer complaints can be filed at any time at www.dos.ny.gov/ consumer-protection. provided information
