Public hearing Feb. 5 on improvements for Route 531/Washington St. terminus by Kristina Gabalski As the construction phase for the Rt. 531 Terminus Project nears, New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) officials have planned a public hearing on the preferred design alternative/proposed highway safety improvements for Thursday, February 5, at the Spencerport High School. Project improvements include the current terminus of Rt. 531 at Rt. 36 and along Rt. 31 (Brockport-Spencerport Road) west to Salmon Creek Road in the towns of Ogden and Sweden. Lori Maher of the NYSDOT says the preferred design alternative is a conventional, four-legged, at-grade, signalized intersection at Rt. 531 and Rt. 36.

The Rt. 531 to Rt. 31 transition would be just south of existing Rt. 31, along the existing eastbound on-ramp. Rt. 531 would connect directly to Rt. 31 and would transition from a four-lane expressway to a two-lane rural arterial west of Rt. 36. Maher says the preferred design alternative was shaped by those who participated in the public involvement process, which took place over the past few years. “Many citizens submitted comments relative to the conditions on Rt. 31 and the concern for a safe transition from an expressway-type facility to a standard two-lane highway approaching Sweden,” she says. “The existing ‘jog’ from Rt. 531 to Washington St. to Rt. 31 has its drawbacks from an operational and safety standpoint.” In response to concerns from citizens, Maher says the NYSDOT extended the project limits to the west and spent a lot of time developing treatments to improve Rt. 31 from Rt. 36 west to Salmon Creek Road. “Those treatments are intended to calm traffic and create an easy transition back to the posted speed limit on Rt. 31,” Maher says. “For example, the gentle way Rt. 531 will be tied into Rt. 31, the width, the center median up to Gallup Road, establishing the stretch of right-of-way without access, and the two-

way center turn lane from Gallup Road to Salmon Creek Road and other features will create a comfortable driving experience at the posted speed limit.” The project includes the widening of Rt. 31 with the addition of a center median to separate eastbound and westbound travel lanes where the “new” Rt. 531 lanes tie into Rt. 31 all the way to just east of Gallup Road. Former Rt. 31 would be transformed to a cul-de-sac (approx. 2,000 ft. west of Rt. 36), allowing for access to residential homes located on the north side of Rt. 31. A continuous two-way left turn lane between Gallup Road west towards Salmon Creek Road would be provided to ease travel at intersections, DOT officials say. Residents have frequently expressed the desire to extend Rt. 531 all the way to Redman Road, but Maher explains that in 2009, the DOT officially concluded the study to consider extending the Rt. 531 expressway any farther to the west. “We understand that some citizens disagree,” she says, “but the primary reasons were the poor benefit/cost value, the environmental impacts, and the lack of desire to build more transportation infrastructure. “The transportation benefit to improve safety by reducing travel times, improving mobility, maintaining economic vitality in an area with a flat growth rate, was minimal against the costs, the impacts, and other infrastructure priorities in the state,” Maher continues. “But without concluding the Rt. 531 Extension Study, smaller location, specific projects like this one underway now, would not advance. Even though it was decided not to pursue a full extension, there was a need to address the current terminus and improve Rt. 31,” she adds. The February 5 public hearing at Spencerport High School begins at 5 p.m. with an informal meeting in an open house format in the cafeteria. Project displays will be staffed by the project team. The formal public hearing begins in the auditorium at 7 p.m. A copy of the Draft Design Report is available for public viewing at the Ogden Town Hall, the Sweden Town Hall, or the DOT Regional Office, located at 1530 Jefferson Road in Henrietta. Comments received by February 27, will be made part of the official project record and evaluated prior to finalizing the design alternative. Construction of the $15 million Route 531 Terminus Project is expected to go out to bid to a contractor in the fall of 2016.

Stitching Servants

Quilting, knitting and crocheting skills serve people here and around the world by Doug Hickerson “When we were talking about starting it up, I had been knitting for years and years,” Penny Norton said. “I wanted some way that I could use my knitting, a gift God had given me, to serve other people and not just keep it for myself and my family.” That was how “Stitching Servants” got started at the Brockport Free Methodist Church 15 years ago. The group now knits, quilts, and crochets items of comfort and beauty to give to organizations here and abroad. Norton is now Family Ministries Pastor and her founding partner is Judy Pray, who attends the church. Stitching Servants has about a dozen core members. Regularly scheduled meetings were given up in favor of specific one-time work projects to which more people can commit. The projects attract others from the church who may attend only one time as their contribution. Quilting bees have produced various quilts that were sent to Alternatives for Battered Women in Rochester, an orphanage in Mexico, Haiti, Rochester’s Open Door Mission, and Care Net in Orleans County. Norton and Pray usually find a need that Stitching Servants can serve; or they get suggestions from others. At Christmas time, knitted hats, mittens and scarves were created for the Heart and Soul Church in Rochester’s inner city. The core members, plus others interested, knitted on their own. Items were collected in a drop box at the church. Some people simply purchased knitted items to contribute. A total of 157 knitted hats, scarves, and mittens, from many anonymous contributors, were delivered to Heart and Soul Church. Stitching Servants have also knitted helmet liners for the U. S. troops, keeping them warm in the cold and cool in warmer

Photo by Dianne Hickerson. climates by dipping first in cold water. The liners were sent to the Warmth for Warriors organization in Minnesota where they are sent overseas. Materials for the projects are not purchased with church funds but are contributed. Pray gave an example of a woman who recently visited Brockport Free Methodist Church and saw a display of quilts by the Stitching Servants. She was a former quilter herself who was inspired to contribute ten huge boxes of her remaining quilting materials. “This is how God works,” Pray said about the ways that the needed materials are always provided.

Transportation project list for next fiscal year available for public review The Genesee Transportation Council (GTC), the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the GeneseeFinger Lakes Region, has made the Draft Fiscal Year 2015-2016 Unified Planning Work Program (FY 20152016 UPWP) Project List available for public review through Monday, February 9. The UPWP is the program of federally-funded transportation planning activities to be undertaken by GTC staff, its member agencies, and other jurisdictions in the Genesee-Finger Lakes Region. The FY 2015-2016 UPWP supports planning activities for the period April 1, 2015 through March 31, 2016. Projects included in the current UPWP that are not complete as of March 31, 2015 will be rolled over into the FY 2015-2016 UPWP. The GTC UPWP Development Committee (UDC) has guided the development of the Draft FY 2015-2016 UPWP. The UDC consists of representatives from Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, and Wayne Counties, the City of Rochester, New York State Department of Transportation, Rochester Genesee Regional Transportation Authority, and Genesee/Finger Lakes Regional Planning Council. Subject to GTC Planning Committee review and consideration of public comments, a final draft of the FY 2015-2016 UPWP will be presented to the GTC Board for adoption on March 12. Visit coincides with “Community” Photo Exhibit Rich, vivid, irreverent, intimate, romantic, somewhat troubled. These are a few of the words used to describe the poetry of Nate Pritts, a SUNY Brockport graduate and founder of the online journal and small press, H_NGM_N and H_NGM_N BKS. Pritts, author of six books of poetry, will present a Poetry Reading and Writing Workshop on Tuesday, January 27 from 12:30 - 2 p.m. in the Roz Steiner Art Gallery on the Batavia Campus of Genesee Community College. Sponsored by GCC’s Literary Club, the event coincides with the “Community” GCC Photography exhibit which is on display in the Gallery through February 10. “Community” features photographs taken by students in COM 103 (Black & White Photography) and COM 118 (Introduction to Digital Photography). “Their photographs explore the communities they engage with on a regular basis,” said instructor Joe Ziolkowski. Two sections of COM 118 experienced a wider community through a SUNY COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) Project with Prof. Gert-Jan Peddemors at the University of Applied Sciences at Utrecht, The Netherlands. The students shared and edited one another’s community photographs and the Dutch students work is displayed on a large video screen

Of the situation, Pritts has said, “In our culture, where writing is being reduced to a transaction delivered in online bursts, I think poetry is all that can save us.” English instructor JoNelle Toriseva, Literary Club coadvisor, was acquainted with Pritts and suggested his appearance. Pritts, of Victor, founded H_NGM_N in 2001 as a mimeograph ‘zine. It has grown to encompass an annual online journal, an occasional digital chapbook series, as well as a continuing series of single-author books. It has been recognized by Poets and Writers, the Poetry Foundation, Coldfront and others as one of the most essential and innovative presses operating today. Pritts’ seventh book, “Post Human,” is due to be published by A-Minor Press this coming autumn. He is also an Assistant Professor at Ashford University where he serves as Curriculum Lead and Administrative head of the Film program. New Brockport fire officers sworn in The Board of Fire Commissioners of the Brockport Fire District and 2015 District Chiefs and Association Officers took their Oath of Office at the January 5 organizational meeting. Attorney Ray DiRaddo administered the oath to Chief Don Marenus, Deputy Chief Michael LaDue, Assistant Chief Kenneth Smith (shown in photo); Captains Michael Menear, Jim Juby, Kyle Boyst, and Paul Drake; Lieutenants Scott Merrill, Scott Wainwright, Joe Indelicato, James Ford, George Klump, and Scott Winslow; Safety Officers John Alexander and Andy Burkhartzmeyer. Commissioner Bill Bird was sworn in replacing Jarl Boyst on the Board. Commissioner Charles Sanford was elected Commission Chairman replacing James Sauberan who has served in that post since the Commission was formed. Sauberan will remain on the Board. Laurence Vaughan was elected Deputy Chairman to fill the slot vacated by Sanford. During the meeting, the Board appointed Christopher Martin to another year as their Public Information Officer working with Secretary Debra Bax to keep the community informed of district activities and initiatives. Brockport Kiwanis Club hosts Masquerade/ Mardi Gras Ball Feb. 7

The Brockport Kiwanis 5th Masquerade/Mardi Gras Ball is set for February 7 at 7 p.m. at the Brockport Elks Lodge with music from the Brockport Big Band. The Brockport Big Band consists of local musicians with a love for big band music. It was founded in 2005 by Lorie Bryant and is directed by Walt Perkins. They have played four times at the Rochester International Jazz Fest and at many venues around the Monroe County area. During the evening’s performance Big Band standards from the 1930s and 40s as well as more recent arrangements of funk and popular tunes will be featured. The proceeds of the event will help the Brockport Kiwanis fund their mission in helping the children in the community. The cost of the event will be $50 per couple and $25 for individuals. Sweden Town Park outdoor ice rink is open for skating The sustained cold weather has finally frozen the outdoor ice rink at Sweden Town Park, Redman Road. The 100’ by 300’ rink is open as weather permits and during daylight hours. The Park staff keeps the ice cleared off and as smooth as possible. There is a shelter next to the rink for changing shoes/skates and to get out of the wind.

The ice rink opened during the winter of 2009 and was made possible in part through a NYS Parks and Recreation grant. The rink has been a very popular venue with families as an outdoor winter activity. The 152-acre Sweden Town Park is also a good venue for cross-country skiing and snow shoeing.

Skin care tips for wintery weather (StatePoint) Cool temperatures, low humidity, and furnace-blasted dry air can leave your skin dry, flaky, and itchy. Everyone needs to protect his or her skin from drying out in winter, but if you have certain skin conditions, you should step up your routine to keep your skin healthy. Winter itch is a common name for the skin symptom of generalized itching in winter. While most commonly seen in the elderly and those with a history of asthma, allergies and eczema, anyone can experience winter itch, says Dr. Vishakha Gigler, a board certified dermatologist. With that in mind, here are a few steps everyone can take to prevent and relieve dry itchy skin in wintry weather: •Avoid irritants. Try to avoid products that can irritate your skin, such as fragrance, dryer sheets, and fabric softeners. Use a hypoallergenic laundry detergent and wear soft fabrics such as cotton. •Add humidity to your home and office. Portable humidifiers or those that work with your heating system put moisture into the air that will be absorbed naturally by your skin and hair. •Wear sunscreen. Sunscreen may make you think of the beach, but it’s important in winter, too. Apply a moisturizing, broadspectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30

to exposed areas to protect from the sun’s harmful UV rays before heading outdoors. Look for sunscreens with hyaluronic acid in them. •Moisturize after showering. The most important thing with regards to bathing is your follow-up routine. Pat your skin dry with a towel and then apply a thick moisturizer. Apply in the morning and at night. •Protect against windburn. When heading outside on cold days, avoid windburn and prolonged exposure by wearing a hat, scarf, and gloves. •Eat right. Stock up on foods with lots of healthy monounsaturated fats and omega3 fatty acids, such as fish, nuts, olive oil, flax, sardines, and avocados. These foods promote good skin health. •Hand care. The skin on your hands is thinner than most parts of the body and has fewer oil glands. That means it’s harder to keep your hands moist, especially in cold, dry weather. This can lead to itchiness and cracking. Wear gloves outside; if you need to wear wool to keep your hands warm, slip on a thin cotton glove first, to avoid any irritation the wool might cause.

Amthor, Olson lead Blue Devils by Warren Kozireski Brandon Amthor and Nick Olson each had two individual race first place finishes and were part of a winning relay team to help Brockport to a 104-82 win over host Spencerport in boys swimming. Amthor won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:52.57 and, just two events later, the 50yard freestyle in :22.53. Olson took first in the 100-yard freestyle in :49.11 and the 100-yard breaststroke in :59.15. Both were part of the meet-ending 400-

yard freestyle relay team with Nathaniel Bartalo and Chris Phillips with a winning time of 3:24.80. Connor Noble was the other individual winner for Brockport in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:15.42. The 200-yard relay team of Matt Dambra, Bruce Kane, Alex Regna and Joe Williams won in 1:37.27. For the Rangers, Jared Kettinger took first in the 100-yard backstroke in :58.89, Max Wersinger the 100-yard butterfly in :53.38 while Leo Buoye and Chad Colby finished 1-2 in diving with the former registering 284.75 points. The 200-yard medley Rangers relay team of Kettinger, Wersinger, Nolan Benson and Buoye won with a time of 1:40.99.

RWC’s Redhawks split basketball doubleheader by Warren Kozireski Roberts Wesleyan’s women’s basketball team held visiting Dowling without a field goal for over 12 minutes spanning the first and second half and Lucy Covley tied her career high with 20 points to help the Redhawks to an 82-54 win in the doubleheader split. The men fell 72-70 despite leading by one point with 34 seconds remaining. In the women’s contest, Dowling led most of the first half and by as many as 11 points before the Redhawks closed the gap late. A pair of treys by Jenna Johnson started the rally and Brooke Fields hit on three three-pointers for half of her game total of 18 points; the last tied the game with 2:10 remaining in the first half. A Marissa Sell put-back with 70 seconds left in the half gave Roberts the lead for good. The Redhawks defense allowed Dowling just five points over the first ten minutes of the second half while the offense built a 23 point lead. Hilton’s Carneisha Henry hit on two shots to open the half and Covley hit four three-pointers with a field goal in the Redhawks run. Roberts dominated the boards with a 51-

33 advantage in rebounds with 22 of those on the offensive side. “Coach definitely got on us at halftime about rebounding and said we all had to crash (the boards) because we had such a height advantage,” Henry said. Brockport native Marissa Sell finished with 19 rebounds, which tied her for third in school history for rebounds in one game. She now holds four of the top seven rebounding games in Roberts’ history. Her 865 career rebounds with 15 games remaining put her in position to challenge the all-time record of 981 set by Jeanette Glover from 1996-99. Henry added six boards and all but one player who saw minutes pulled down at least one rebound. The men’s contest was a see-saw affair that featured 15 lead changes and seven ties. Marcus Gooding knocked down a career-high seven treys for a career-high 23 points, but Dowling retook the lead at 72-70 with 25 seconds remaining and the Redhawks missed a three-pointer at the buzzer to fall to 6-4.
