Sarah Messinger, a 2018 graduate of Churchville-Chili Senior High School, was one of about 200 SUNY Canton students who received an academic award at the college’s Honors Convocation.

Honors Convocation recognizes students who’ve achieved the top GpA for their class year within their program of study. Sarah earned the top GpA in the Veterinary Service Administration program.

Erie Canal Learning Hub launched

The Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor and the New York State Canal Corporation have launched a new educational initiative, the Erie Canal Learning Hub. The Hub provides free curriculum resources, field trips, virtual 3D tours, and other online tools for teachers and students who are learning about the Erie Canal.

New York State Canal Corporation Director Brian U. Stratton said, “The Erie Canal is an intrinsic part of our state’s history and a vital part of the learning curriculum for New York students. Our Canal system is a great example of history, technology, and science working in tandem to serve New York State, and provides a lens into the innovation and culture that transformed communities far and wide. The Canal Corporation is pleased to help launch the Erie Canal Learning Hub, which will serve as an immersive learning opportunity to educate future generations about an integral part of New York’s legacy.”

Educators in New York State and beyond will find resources to engage students by examining the canal in traditional and new ways, including:

•Virtual 3D Tours with audio-described videos enable students to explore canal locks, bridges, and other structures used to operate the canal.

•Ticket to ride Field Trips bring students to canal museums and historic sites by covering bus and tour fees. Since 2012, more than 55,000 students from 250 schools have participated.

•Document Based Questions incorporate primary source maps, images, and newspapers to help students develop critical thinking skills as they learn about the canal.

•The Seneca Lake Survey Lesson plans draw on recently discovered canal shipwrecks to provide middle and high school students opportunities to study canal history, underwater archeology, water quality, geology, and invasive species in the Finger Lakes.

•Opening the Gates to Change Lesson plan explores the role of the canal in social reform movements and the ways that young people today are finding their voices in the struggle for social justice.

“The Erie Canal Learning Hub is the result of collaborations among educators, curriculum specialists, researchers, museum professionals, and others to develop engaging new approaches to studying the Erie Canal. We are thrilled to be able to expand educational offerings to schools throughout New York and the nation,” said Bob radliff, Executive Director of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor.

The Erie Canal Learning Hub is dynamic and will grow to include new curriculum in the coming year. All resources are offered at no cost to ensure that they are available to every school district, regardless of budget.

Brockport welcomes new makerspace: fueling creativity and innovation

A new makerspace opened its doors recently and is quickly gaining momentum. Just one month since its inception, It Begins in Brockport (IBiB) has already equipped its space in the Hart Gallery 27 art studio (https://www.hartgallery27.com/) with a variety of tools including 3D printers, an electronics workbench, a laser cutter, and a CNC mill. The makerspace recently received a donation that will expand its offerings to STEM education outreach and creative play.

Spencerport CSD superintendent resigning

Spencerport Central School District Superintendent Kristin Swann recently apprised the Board of Education that she will be resigning from the district on June 30, 2023, to pursue other opportunities.

“It has been my utmost privilege and honor to serve as the superintendent of this district. Together, we have achieved remarkable milestones, fostered a nurturing and inclusive environment and witnessed countless success stories. I am immensely proud of the progress we have made and the positive impact we have had on the lives of our students,” said Swann. “I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the incredible students, faculty and staff who have inspired me every day with their

compassion, enthusiasm and support. I’m grateful for your collaboration and hope our collective achievements will continue to propel the district to even greater heights.”

Brockport Symphony Orchestra presents concert at the Morgan-Manning House

The Brockport Symphony Orchestra will present its Outdoor Summer Pops Concert on Sunday, June 25, at 4 p.m. at the Morgan-Manning House, 151 Main Street, Brockport. Directed by Jonathan Allentoff, this family concert will feature vocal artists Mary Wojciechowski and Michael DeLuca.

Wojciechowski, a graduate of Nazareth College and Temple University, has performed as a vocal soloist at the Rochester International Jazz Festival and the Corning Museum of Glass. She appeared with the Philadelphia Pops Festival Chorus under the baton of Peter Nero. DeLuca studied vocal performance with Heinz Rehfuss while attending

the University at Buffalo and has performed on stage across Western New York. He records and produces a variety of albums for the major streaming platforms.

The program includes Broadway and Hollywood favorites, folk songs, and the world premiere of “The Erie Canal Comes to Brockport” by Allentoff. This new work celebrates the Bicentennial of Brockport’s inclusion in the Erie Canal’s route, as a section of the Canal that stretched from the village of Brockport to Albany was opened in 1823.

Admission is free, and donations will be gratefully accepted. The audience is invited to bring lawn chairs and blankets.

In the case of rain, the concert will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Brockport, 35 State Street, Brockport.

This project is made possible with support from the Village of Brockport and funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts.

Willie Bee Foundation Golf Tournament

The Willie Bee Foundation is hosting its third annual Charity Golf Tournament at Locust Hill Country Club on Monday, July 24, 2023. The foundation has hosted three sold out tournaments in the last two years. This is its largest fundraiser of the year and provides it with the funds it pulls from all year long to support local families whose children have life-threatening illness.

Registration is $200 per person, $800 per foursome, and includes: cart and greens fees, 18 holes of golf, lunch and dinner, beverages on the course, prizes and more. Check in will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. with lunch being served beginning at 11:30 a.m. The tournament has a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Clay and Christine Beeman founded the Willie Bee Foundation, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit charitable organization, in August of 2017 in memory of their son William Lou Donavon Beeman.

Since 2017, the foundation has expanded to not only helping ease families’ burdens (lawn mowing services, snow plowing contracts, house cleaning, catered meals, help covering expenses associated with traveling for medical care, ipad packages, grocery store gift cards, etc.), but also helping families make memories (Great Wolf Lodge, Jellystone Campground, local cottages, Dave and Busters, etc.). And as of 2023, it began a program titled Will’s Work that allows the foundation to support families whose children are nearing the end-of-life with pediatric palliative care services.

The Hilton-Parma Senior Center is closing out the month of June with two events.

An evening meal with entertainment will be held on Wednesday, June 28. Enjoy breakfast for dinner with frittata (eggs, sausage, potatoes), French toast, bacon, muffin and juice, served and catered by Foster’s. Dinner is served at 4 p.m. and music by Mike Sidoti begins at 5 p.m. Doors open at 3:30 p.m. so attendees can save space with friends or make new ones.

Evening meals are open to any seniors in Parma, Hilton and the surrounding communities. The cost is $11 per person and the deadline to register is June 20. Newly added is the option to bring an item for the Hilton Food Shelf as they are always in demand of non-perishables; this is optional, but greatly appreciated.

Presenting with Pizza, where a local presenter speaks about an interesting topic or history, followed by a full pizza lunch, will be held Monday, June 26 at 10:30 a.m. The cost is $5 per person. This month’s topic is Monroe County’s Recycling Program and Ecopark. Curious about what is really recyclable in Monroe County? God brought forth man first from the dust of the earth. With the breath of God to survive, man was made alive. Who needed a help mate he would call his bride. The woman God formed from man’s side he did provide. To be flesh of his flesh, and bone of his bone, for God said: “It was not good for man to be alone.” The man and the woman lived in God’s garden. From all the trees for food they were given, they ate from the tree God had forbidden. Now banished from the presence of God to flee. Separated from their creator ever would be, but for God’s mercy.

When out of “The Father’s Heart” of compassion he prepared for their salvation before the dawn of creation. Only God himself was able to pay the ransom needed for redemption to be completed, nevermore to be repeated. It was on the cross when, “It is finished,” He had spoken. Restored the fellowship the first man had broken. Now the requital for all mankind was done, for Jesus has said: “I and My Father are one.”

Blood donors needed to help babies

For type O blood donors (either positive or negative), the Red Cross is continuously checking the donated blood for cytomegalovirus. It is a virus that is harmful to newborn babies and preemie babies, but not so much to adults. When the Red Cross checks all O blood type donors they are looking for a CMV Negative result, which is found in less then 20% of all O donors.

The Red Cross notifies the rare individuals who are CMV Negative.

The Red Cross found that CMV Negative is the best donation for newborns to get the best benefit. It is the only type of donation that is sent

to NICU units as a priority for the babies to get first, if possible, before sending it some place else.

People of all blood types are still needed and encouraged to donate. Pediatric cancer patients are eligible to receive all blood types to help along with their chemo treatments.

CAMPS

The goal of this four week program is to provide your child with a positive and enjoyable golf experience. This will entail instruction on swing fundamentals, long game, short game, putting, etiquette, practice drills and safety. The program is taught by PGA Professional Gary Tatar.

Camp I: Mondays, July 10, 17, 24, Aug. 7 (Sign-up deadline July 7)

Camp II: Tuesdays, August 8, 15, 22, 29 (Sign-up deadline August 4)

Camp Time: 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm. Instruction starts promptly at 5:30

The camp is open to children ages 8 to 14. Camp is limited to the first 20 children. An adult is welcome to observe.

Golf is available following instruction. Children play free, however must be accompanied by an adult. If the adult plays a twilight fee is required.

Cost of the Camp is $100. Price includes instruction, range balls.

All Camp dates will be held as scheduled. In case of bad weather, instruction will be held inside.

All Juniors will be required to have an adult present if you choose to play the golf course following the camp.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Donna Carter Preston; his children, Tammy (Jeffrey) Branagan and Todd (Jane Ellen) Preston; his grandchildren, Lauren and Alan Branagan and Natalie, Jack and Luke Preston; his brother, Eugene Preston; his brother-in-law, William (Donna) Carter; several nieces and nephews and many friends. Kenneth was predeceased by his parents, Clarence and Adrianne Preston and by his brother, Edward Preston. Ken was retired from Eastman Kodak Company, where he was a Department Manager. He was Past President of the North Greece Fire Department with over 60 years of active service in the department. He was also Past President of the Association of Fire Districts of NYS; Past President of the Monroe County Fire District Officers Association; Past President of the North Greece Exempts; and a North Greece Fire Department Commissioner for 32 years.

Ken’s Funeral Mass was celebrated June 14 at Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church, Rochester. Interment in Parma Union Cemetery. •Stinebiser, Lorna Oliver, died June 9, 2023 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Lorna was predeceased by her beloved sister Barbara Oliver and her parents Jennie Cimino Oliver Tirimacco and Louis Oliver, and her stepfather Mario Tirimacco. She is survived by her loving husband Daniel Stinebiser; two sons Louis and Ben; her daughter-in-law Lorraine; beloved grandson James; her brother Patrick Oliver and his husband Michael Heil of NJ; step brother Anthony Tirimacco and his wife Margaret of PA; step sister Linda Kirr of VA; her sister-in-law Ann Stinebiser Lago and her husband Frank; many cousins, nephews, nieces, many friends. Lorna enjoyed a thirty-year career in education as both a teacher and a counselor. She was a counselor at Arcadia High School, then worked in Student Affairs at SUNY Brockport. After staying home with her two children, she returned to education as a long-term sub, once as a counselor and twice as a math teacher. Finally, she was hired full time as a math teacher at Brockport High School. Lorna retired from teaching high school math in 2000 after twenty years at Brockport.Lorna was active in social justice issues as cochair of the Human Concerns Committee at Nativity Church. In local politics, she was treasurer of the Town of Clarkson Democratic Committee.

Her Funeral Service was held June 15 at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, Brockport. Interment in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. •Knapp, Lillian “Dorothy,” died June 14, 2023 at age 86. Survived by her husband, Orren Van Orden; siblings, Beverly Wetzel and Harold (Debbie) Park; her children, Kathryn Q. (Wayne) Snell, Karen L. Burkhertzmeyer and Robert A. Knapp, Jr. She was predeceased by her first husband, Robert A. Knapp, Sr., a daughter, Beverly Donnan; and two siblings, Wayland “Topper” Park and Lois Perry. After raising her children, she earned a master’s degree in Special Education while attending Nazareth and Brockport State Universities. She taught at St. Mary’s School in Holley and in later years served as a substitute teacher in Holley, Kendall and Byron-Bergen Schools. She volunteered at a Christian boys and girls youth camp in the summer and when in Florida, at the Good New Club at Oakcrest Elementary School in Ocala.

Carriage driving show returning to Batavia June 25

Northampton Driving Society’s 37th annual carriage driving competition returns to Silver Shoe Farm in Batavia on Sunday, June 25. Kacy Tipton-Fashik, the general manager of The Grand Oaks equine resort in Weirsdale, Florida, will be judging the event. David Remley, whose late parents founded the internationallyknown Walnut Hill Driving Competition, will be ringmaster.

Morning classes will feature horses, ponies, very small equines and multiples of the same in the ring for working and reinsmanship classes. These are judged on “turn out” – the pleasing appearance and appropriateness of horse, harness, vehicle and attire – the horse’s obedience and way of going and the driver’s (the “whip”) reinsmanship skills. Afternoon classes will entail driving an

obstacle course of cones, scoring for speed and agility.

Mr. Remley will begin the show with a coach horn demonstration at 9 a.m. Food and shopping opportunities will be provided by Burning Barrel BBQ, Buttercrumbs Bakery, The Brick House Boutique, Rusty Bitz, Green Compass CBD, and Creative Upcycling. Free xylazine test strips available throughout NYS

New York State is taking action to address the spread of xylazine, including a new effort to supply free xylazine test strips through the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports and Office of Mental Health programs, as well as directly to the public.

Xylazine is a non-opioid sedative found in the unregulated drug supply with potentially harmful health impacts, especially when added to illicitly manufactured fentanyl. It is typically used in veterinary settings, and not intended or approved for human use. Xylazine is not responsive to naloxone, leading to complicated fentanyl overdoses, and could cause prolonged, heavy sedation, as well as skin wounds which may require amputation in severe situations. Additional educational information about xylazine is now available on the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports website, https://oasas.ny.gov/xylazine.

The new ordering system will enable providers and New York State residents to order test strips through a partnership with NY MATTERS (https://mattersnetwork.org/harmreduction/), and will ensure an ongoing supply of this important harm-reduction tool across the state. These test strips are designed to detect the presence of xylazine that has been mixed in with other substances, such as cocaine or heroin.

We can tell by the yard signs that it is election time once again, so I’ll try to offer my two cents worth without getting skewered too badly.

Ask yourself some questions. “Who do I support?” “Why should I support one person over the other?” “What are the candidate’s motivations for running?”

During my tenure as Supervisor I had one desire, and that was to do what is best for the town within the law and with regards to consideration for all the stakeholders involved.

I learned a great deal in that time. I learned who I felt was more interested in using their position for their own gain, who had the best interest of the town as their primary consideration, and who gave effort above and beyond that required.

I was blessed to work with some of the most dedicated people I have ever known.

Cindy Oliver comes immediately to mind. She is the flywheel, the major source of energy that guarantees the town runs smoothly in greased gears. She is not up for election this time around, but when she is, she is the most critical cog in the machine who would always have my endorsement.

No town can function in these modern times without a great attorney. Jeff Martin provided constant steady guidance and has been sorely missed in his position since his departure at the end of my term.

Louise Passarell was one the hardest working employees the Town of

Murray ever had. She performed many functions, from Water Clerk to Assistant Highway Superintendent to custodial work on weekends. She was also the Assistant Assessor until such time that she studied hard and completed a course of training to become Assessor upon the retirement of Lynn Wood. She did so well she completed her examinations as #1 in the County, which made her appointment to that position all the more appropriate.

Superintendent, retired shortly after my departure, receiving many professional accolades from his peers for the outstanding performance of his duties during his long career with the Town of Murray. One such achievement was the completion of over 97% public water lines to service the people of Murray.

The issue is that we worked TOGETHER. Everyone knew their job, knew how it impacted everyone else’s work, and did their best for the Town of Murray. The only one remaining from such a strong core group is Cindy Oliver.

Three decades of teaching water aerobics comes to an end

Linda Hoffman moved to Hilton in 1966 and graduated from Hilton High School in 1979. She became interested in water aerobics after watching her mom take classes. She began as a student of water exercise in 1991 at Merton Williams school. Little did she know that this decision would lead her to a lifelong career in teaching water aerobics to countless people in the western Monroe County community “I just loved the water class,” said Linda. The only equipment that was

provided enough weight to challenge our muscles,” she recalled.

Linda began teaching the classes in Hilton the fall of 1992 and went on to get her certification for water aerobic instruction in 1997. In 2002, Merton Williams built a new aquatic center with an eight-lane pool, diving well, new bleachers and its own entrance. During the time of this construction, Linda taught at Greece Athena and also taught water aerobics at the Greece YMCA for ten years. “I am well preserved with all that chlorine,” laughed Linda.

She has worked with hundreds of residents from the community and at times she would have more than 40 clients in the pool at one time, which she could manage thanks to her “wing woman,” Jeanne Townsend.

“I was committed to this program to do the best job I could,” said Linda. “The friendships I made have been rewarding.”

Linda would encourage her clients to work a little harder, talk a little less and really work up a sweat. “The veteran students who came back year after year, that would do anything I led them to do, is the real reason why the class lasted so long,” she said. “I was happy to be their drill sergeant,” she chuckled.

Linda officially retired on June 15. “After 30 years of commitment and dedication, this girl is taking a break!” she exclaimed. She is also be retiring in June from her position at Summitview Auto.

“I see more camping and vacationing days in the near future, and maybe taking up gardening and golf. I also miss having a dog so maybe I will get a dog!” Linda and her boyfriend, Jack Yeager, plan to be Florida snowbirds.

As Linda concludes this chapter of teaching water aerobics, she extends her gratitude and appreciation to Hilton Community Education as well as everyone who passed through her class. “We are like an extended family, and I am truly humbled, blessed and enriched for each of you,” she said.

BHS marketing class donates over $1.3K to C.U.R.E Childhood Cancer

Brockport High School (BHS) students taking Sports, Entertainment and Marketing (SEM) put their new skills to the test by organizing and hosting a fundraiser to benefit C.U.R.E. Childhood Cancer Association this spring.

With a goal to raise $1,000 to help raise money and awareness for local children battling cancer, BHS Business Teacher Mark Mutton explained that the fundraiser was created by students who wanted to “go the extra mile” for their final project.

Dubbed the “Brockport Buzz,” four SEM students volunteered to have their heads shaved by local barbers, John Lindsay from Next Level Barbershop and Michelle Gallager from Salon Sage, during a live event on June 12. Mr. Mutton also upped the ante, pledging to shave his head if the class made their $1,000 goal by June 9.

Having exceeded their goal, student representatives from the SEM class and the BHS bookstore, Trident, presented C.U.R.E. Executive Director Holly Dutcher with a check of $1,363 and an additional $20 cash which was donated on the day of the event.

According to Dutcher, Mr. Mutton reached out with

an idea from “students who were looking to make a real difference.”

For C.U.R.E. Board of Directors Member, and father of three Brockport students, Daniel Kuhn, it’s a cause that hits close to home.

“C.U.R.E. was there for my family from day one,” Kuhn said, reflecting on his daughter’s diagnosis.

“The organization was founded over 50 years ago by parents of children with cancer, so they knew the importance of having that familial support and connection because they’d been through it themselves. It’s really like the best club that no one wants to be a part of.”

Their goal is simple: to improve the lives of pediatric cancer patients and their loved ones.

“I love the mission,” Dutcher said. “The connections we have made with families over the years is really special. There are families I’m still reaching out to, I’m still connected with, after 10+ years.”

New law to protect consumers from potential gift card scams

Beginning June 20, 2023, all businesses selling gift cards must display a notice at or near where any gift card or gift certificate is displayed or sold to caution consumers about gift card fraud. Requesting gift cards as payment has become increasingly popular with scammers as funds are nearly impossible to trace. According to the Federal Trade Commission in 2022, nearly 65,000 consumers filed a complaint related to gift card scams, equating to a total loss of $228.3 million.

“With the number of gift card scams on the rise, it’s more important than ever to educate consumers so they know that gift cards should only be used for gifts, not to make payments,” said New York Secretary of State Robert J. Rodriguez. “This new law requiring warning signage where gift cards are displayed or sold will help to reduce the success rate of these scammers and protect consumers’ hard-earned money.”

To address the growing prevalence of gift card fraud, this new law re-

quires retailers and businesses to clearly post a notice at or near the gift card display or point-of-purchase to help increase public awareness of this scam and provide guidance to vulnerable customers if they believe they are being scammed. Gift card sellers are required to display these notices in an area that is visible to consumers and close to where the gift cards are displayed or the sale occurs.

The Department of State’s Division of Consumer Protection has created and published model notices that gift card sellers can download and post to comply with this new law.

Businesses are encouraged to access these downloadable signs and post them where they sell gift cards. These downloadable signs are available in three different sizes on the Division of Consumer Protection website, https://dos.ny.gov/system/files/documents/2023/05/giftcardscamalert50. pdf.

Businesses may also create their own notice that includes the following guidance:

•Cautions the purchaser about pre-paid card scams.

•Instructs the purchaser on what to do if they suspect they might be a potential victim of such a scam.

Gift card scams can take many forms, but are often phone calls targeting consumers, particularly the elderly and immigrants, stating that they owe money and payment is required by gift card. Below are examples of different forms of gift card scams:

•A consumer received an email that appeared to be from eBay stating that the consumer needed to call to verify his account. The consumer called and was told that in order to complete the verification, he needed to purchase an eBay gift card and provide the code. The consumer recognized it was a scam and ended the call.

•A consumer purchased a puppy from a breeder advertising on Facebook Marketplace. The puppy was $2,000 + fees, but the breeder stated they didn’t take credit cards, so they instructed the consumer to purchase Visa gift cards and provide the numbers and PINs. The consumer purchased a total of $3,700 in gift cards to pay for the cost of the puppy, shipping, crate and insurance. The breeder then disappeared, and the consumer now realizes they were scammed out of $3,700.

•A consumer received a Facebook message from a friend stating they were stranded with flat tire and they needed money for the tow truck and a new tire. The “friend” asked if the consumer could purchase a $500 gift card for them and they would pay the consumer back. The consumer purchased the gift card and provided the number and pin, but then later found out the friend’s Facebook account had been hacked and the request for the $500 was a scam.

•A senior citizen received an email that appeared to be from his bank to authorize a large cash transfer to an account overseas. The man knew nothing of the transfer, and when he called the phone number in the email, he was told that the only way to stop the transfer was to overdraft his account so there would be no money to transfer out. The man was told to purchase $7,200 in gift cards and the bank would process them immediately to justify the overdraft. He purchased the gift cards and provided the account and pin numbers as instructed. The victim’s wife believed it was a scam and encouraged him to go into a bank branch to verify the information. He then learned it was a scam but, by that point, had already lost $7,200.

WHEREAS, a Building Reserve Fund was established on November 23, 2004 for the purpose of making improvements to town-owned municipal buildings; and

WHEREAS, the Town Board of the Town of Sweden has undertaken a renovation of the Sweden Town Hall; and

WHEREAS, the Town Board desires that the project be funded in part from the Building Reserve Fund.

Outdoor Rec Fest at Letchworth State Park is your chance to learn from the local experts.

Outdoor Rec Fest is July 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. near the Humphrey Nature Center in Letchworth State Park, between the Visitor Center and Inspiration Point. There will be 25 skilled and friendly activity leaders to learn from. These activity leaders are from local businesses, organizations, and agencies that serve outdoor adventurers within an hour of Letchworth State Park.

Byron-Bergen teacher to learn from scientists aboard EPA research vessel Lake Guardian

peter Spence, a Living Environment and Ap Environmental Science teacher at Byron-Bergen High School is among 15 educators from five Great Lakes states who will become scientists during the 2023 Lake Ontario Shipboard Science Workshop aboard the u.S. EpA Great Lakes National program Office (GLNpO) research Vessel Lake Guardian

This unique professional development workshop hosted by New York Sea Grant (NYSG) will take place July 6 through 12. The ship will depart from rochester and make shore stops in Youngstown and Oswego.

Spence and teachers from six other New York-based schools, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin will learn alongside scientists from the u.S. EpA GLNpO, the State university of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, Cornell university, and the Great Lakes research Consortium (GLrC), including GLrC Director and preeminent harmful algal bloom researcher Gregory L. Boyer, ph.D. NYSG Great Lakes Literacy Specialist Nate Drag will guide the teachers in developing lesson plans and curricula to take back to their classrooms to inspire students. Among their activities, the group will take part in water sampling and be able to analyze the samples in onboard laboratories.

“This unique hands-on learning experience increases teachers’ understanding of the Great Lakes’ unparalleled value and fosters creation of personalized teaching resources to spark student interest in the world’s largest surface freshwater system,” Drag said.

“I am honored to be part of a team of teachers from several states to conduct research on Lake Ontario with Great Lakes scientists. I look forward to working alongside my colleagues to develop new real-world strategies to bring awareness about the Great Lakes to my classes,” Spence said.

EpA, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and National Sea Grant Office.
