Students from Justin Jackson’s fourth grade class at Brockport’s Hill School were eager to board the tugboat Urger at the Erie Canal Welcome Center in Brockport. During their canalside visit and tour, students heard about the construction of the canal, the importance of tugboats, and the importance of recycling to keep waters clean. This is an annual field trip for all fourth graders, as part of their study of New York State history. “We are incredibly fortunate to live in Brockport where we have access to so many learning opportunities that extend beyond the classroom’s walls,” said Mr. Jackson. Photo by Dianne Hickerson.

The Welcome Center on the Erie Canal after ten years by Doug Hickerson Since its beginning in 2005, the Welcome Center on the banks of Brockport’s Erie Canal has drawn visitors into the village from all around the world. From the water have come reflections of the fabric of the community, as boaters praise its features and quality. Instrumental in Brockport’s glowing reputation among national and global visitors are the greeters that welcome them at the Welcome Center. The greeters are the first to meet arriving boaters, giving instructions on use of the facilities as their hosts, and then sharing highlights of the community as ambassadors. Sal Sciremammano has served as greeter since the beginning. Sal says, “There are not many places on the canal where your boat is about 100 yards from a Main Street and a bevy of restaurants, coffee places, novelty shops, a movie theater, and a huge independent book store. And, our boaters love it.” On evaluation sheets completed by boaters, a typical statement reads, “Beautiful town and wonderful reception center and people. Brockport has a great reputation with boaters. We can see why.” Managing the Welcome Center every day May through October The Welcome Center on Water Street has state-of-theart facilities and service, including water and electric hookups, Wi-Fi, showers, restrooms, and laundry facilities. About 100 volunteers serve two-hour shifts for twelve hours daily during the peak season from June through September. It’s a nine-hour day for the opening and closing weeks of the canal.

From the water come worldwide reflections of the community Bill Andrews, Brockport’s deputy mayor, started the greeters’ project and now oversees it, working with Doug Wolcott to manage it. Doug schedules the greeters and Bill sends out the schedules by email. Doug also has been a greeter from the beginning. His duties now include arriving every day at 8 a.m. to check on paid boaters and, “Make sure all are happy with what they got.” A story sampler from the greeters Some greeters are scheduled with a partner, allowing one to miss on occasion, but also allowing one of them to go on

special errands for boaters. It’s up to each greeter, Doug says, but some have driven boaters to Wegmans, WalMart, the hospital, and to a store to get boat parts. Doug and Sal have paired up from the beginning, taking a four-hour shift each week. They are joined by Kyle McGonigal, a man with Down syndrome who loves being on duty and helping with chores. The Welcome Center also greets many bikers who arrive from across the U.S. Sal recalls two women, 80 and 82 years old who biked from Albany on their way to see their grandfather’s home in Buffalo. They asked for a ride to Albion to expedite their trip. Sal drove them to Lockport. Cathy Appleby, a greeter for 10 years, was amazed by an Ohio family arriving last year with three children, aged six, eight and twelve years old. “After a battle over cell phones, the parents decided, ‘That’s enough!’” Cathy said. “They sold their house, purchased a boat, and have been traveling for four years so their kids can learn to see beyond the material world.” Doug was surprised to find visitors from other states shocked to find that upstate “New York” is not as urban as they had imagined. “A couple from Texas wanted to see a large dairy farm,” Doug said about driving them there. “They were amazed, saying, ‘You have more farmland here than we have around Austin.’ The wife, who had grown up in Kansas, was shocked at how much corn we have here.” Center also available for community activities Besides providing hospitality to boaters and bikers, the Welcome Center landing is the venue for different local events. Summer Serenades with musical groups are held there as well as other entertainment. Annually, New York State provides Erie Canal history to local 4th graders with a visit from the historic tugboat Urger and its crew. (See photo). Free loaner bikes are also available for visiting boaters. Reflections on success Bill Andrews offers this assessment of Welcome Center’s success: •Boaters tell us that we have the best welcome center on the canal and the only one that is staffed full-time by volunteers. The ease with which we have recruited volunteers, 90-100 each season, is a very heartening indication of the vitality of the volunteer culture in our village. •The Welcome Center has been a very valuable investment for the Village in terms of the amount of business it brings to our downtown businesses. I have read that the average tourist spends $150 a day. •This year we lent bicycles 461 times through October 9. Russ Church at Bicycle Outfitters does any bike repairs with no charge for his labor. Gary Skoog volunteers to coordinate the bicycle program. Bill also said the use of the Welcome Center has increased 23% over last year. As a result, the Center is making money from the low fees that don’t exceed $15 per boat. Note: For other information, visit www.brockportny. org/about/canal-front-tourism

LOVE’S FINAL ACT While many of us feel uncomfortable discussing basic end-of-life issues with our families, doing so is completely consistent with the love we have shown them all of our lives. Because love means putting other people’s interests ahead of our own, we often try to shield those whom we love from harsh realities. Doing so frequently means that we take it upon ourselves to do things that we might find difficult or burdensome; yet, we still take on these tasks because we know that it means sparing loved ones from unnecessary difficulty and anguish. In light of these unselfish demonstrations of love, does it not stand to reason that your

final act of love would be to preplan your own funeral? Making funeral arrangements at the time of loss is difficult for those left behind. One of the most caring, loving things you can do for your family is to leave detailed information about what you want your service to be like. THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME offers, please call at 585392-7100. We pride ourselves on our ability to personalize and individualize each funeral service so that it is a truly memorable experience and a fitting tribute. Available seven days a week, 24 hours a day, we are located at 735 East Avenue. Family owned and trusted since 1976.

Historical group’s presentation reveals Morgan family’s involvement in college The Morgan Manning House presents “Gifford Morgan and the Amazing Disappearing Normal School!” on Thursday, November 5, at 151 Main Street in Brockport. Charles Cowling will reveal how the Morgan family name relates to the historic home and its history with The College at Brockport. The free program, sponsored by the Western Monroe Historical Society, begins at 7:30 p.m., followed by refreshments. In the 1930s the Brockport Normal School, predecessor of today’s College at Brockport, underwent a very real threat of closure. Hear how Gifford Morgan partnered with

Ernest Hartwell to save the school from closure with a new building, as well as other interesting facets of the Morgan family’s involvement with the college. Cowling has served 25 years at the College at Brockport as the college archivist and a reference librarian. He has given many presentations on various aspects of the college history, many on campus and in other venues, and currently resides in Clarkson. For information, visit www.brockport.edu/archives/. Freshman Wengender nets first hat trick for Rangers by Warren Kozireski Freshman Leah Wengender netted three second half goals as Spencerport broke up a scoreless duel to defeat Brockport 5-1 to maintain their top ranking in Class A girls soccer. Each team had just one legitimate scoring chance in the first half. Ranger Erin Coykendall headed a cross from Aleah Martone over the crossbar in the 21st minute. Ten minutes later Brockport midfielder Emma Moulton took one step past a defender and just missed the far left post with her attempt. The Rangers broke up the 0-0 halftime tie just 1:55 into the second half as Martone threw the ball in from the sideline to Wengender, who made an inside move on the defender before putting her shot from 20 yards out into the upper-right corner of the net. In the 50th minute, Martone again had a throw-in - this time to Coykendall, who passed to Wengender. She walked in virtually unimpeded for her second goal of the game.

Spencerport Rotary reports another successful MDA fund drive The members of the Spencerport Rotary Club wish to thank the residents of the Ogden-Spencerport community for their continued annual support of the Muscular Dystrophy Fund Drive. SRC raised slightly over $2,000 for continued research to someday soon find a cure for the disease. From the very early days with the Jerry Lewis Telethon, the club has manned the intersection at Union Street and West Avenue on the Saturday before Labor Day seeking donations. We estimate that in the 35 years we have been collecting, the community has donated in excess of $70K. We tip our hats to everyone who stopped and gave a donation, whether large or small, and we appreciated the smiles from those who understand the importance of continuing to support this challenge. Martone found Maliah Benedetto with a cross from the left end-line for another tally in the 52nd minute to make it 3-0 Spencerport and they made it 4-0 two minutes later off an indirect kick. Senior captain Olivia Coccitto found Benedetto who passed to Coykendall for the goal. Brockport broke up the shutout bid with 5:35 remaining when Moulton was tripped up in the box resulting in a penalty kick. Senior Tori Penders scored to make it 4-1. Wengender completed the scoring at 66:20 after a perfect pass from Martone. “It was exciting,” the freshman said about her first varsity hat trick. “We’ve been working on that where anytime Aleah (Martone) gets the ball she gets her head up and I make a run. “We talked at halftime about not wanting a tie or go into overtime; basically we were sick of not scoring.” The Rangers improved to 10-2-1 with the win.

Hilton Baptist Church welcomes new pastor Hilton Baptist Church welcomes Pastor Daniel Brown as its new pastor on Sunday, October 25. Pastor Dan and his wife, Karen, along with their two dogs, Shelby and Tozer, relocated to Hilton from Allentown, Pennsylvania. Pastor Dan is a Western New York native having grown up in Lockport, New York. During high school, Pastor Dan’s family moved to Newfane, New York where his family has remained. Pastor Dan received his local American Baptist ordination through his home church in Newfane. Pastor Dan has served as both an Associate Pastor and Pastor in separate churches along with spending time in secular employment in a senior living facility. After a year as Wesley United Methodist Church’s Minister of Discipleship, Pastor Dan took his gift for leading others and connecting with the youth to become Youth Pastor. The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra will play “Music Macabre” at The College at Brockport on Friday, October 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the Tower Fine Arts Center Mainstage, 180 Holley Street, on the Brockport campus. Tickets cost $16 for general admission, $11 for seniors, alumni, faculty and staff, and $8.50 for students and are available online at fineartstix.brockport.edu, by phone at 395-2787, or at the Tower Fine Arts Center Box Office. Under the baton of RPO trumpeter and guest conductor, Paul Shewan, the evening’s repertoire will feature several pieces that fall under the descriptor of “program music,” in which a composition actually expresses a story or narrative, rather than having no reference points to the outside world. Examples of the genre include Saint-Saëns’ “Danse Macabre;” Dukas’ “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” featured in Disney’s “Fantasia;” Grieg’s “In the Hall of the Mountain King;” and Dvorák’s “The Noon Witch.” Rounding out the program will be a suite of symphonic music from the film “Pirates of the Caribbean.” Manager of the Fine Arts Series at the College, Stuart Ira Soloway encourages audience members to dress in costume for the concert. “It’s Halloween, after all, and with all this spooky music, we need some creatures to ward off the ghouls, especially in the ‘Danse Macabre.’ In that piece, the

dancing skeletons’ bones are depicted by xylophones, marking one of their earliest appearances in an orchestral score. They were so new that Saint-Saëns even indicated where orchestra could find the instruments.” The RPO has had a long-standing relationship with Brockport. In addition to its annual concert, they have a presence on campus throughout the year, providing course instructors and guest lecturers. Parking Lot G, closest to the Tower Performing Arts Center, will be closed to the public during this concert. Park in lots F or H, across the street from Tower, or in Lot D-1, about one block away. When It's Time to Move As your life circumstances change, your housing needs may also change. For example, when your children leave for college or move out on their own, it may be time to re-examine your current housing situation, Perhaps a smaller yard or fewer square feet may make sense as your lifestyle evolves. Or maybe a larger parcel in a quieter neighborhood could keep you busy with gardening. When it is time to sell your home in the Greater Rochester area or to purchase a new one, the first step is to contact a professional Realtor to discuss your situation. What is your home worth? Would it be better to sell it now or keep the house and rent it out? What cost effective fix-ups should you make before marketing the property? If you are moving to a new city, how can you contact a Realtor to introduce you to the community and help you find the perfect new home in a neighborhood that meets your needs? I can help you contact a Realtor anywhere in the country to help you feel more secure in your move. Realtors are professionals whose experience and expertise can make your transition as smooth as possible. For professional real estate advice, give me a call, Mary Lobene at 352-8529.
