Long-time president of Friends of the Seymour Library stepping down by Kristina Gabalski Charlotte Wright may be “retiring” as president of the Friends of the Seymour Library, but she has no intention of leaving the group and will continue her work on the semiannual book sales. Her seventeen years with the Friends have, “meant a lot,” to her, Charlotte says. “Libraries are important, whether school or public, it’s a wonderful service to provide to people.” A “retirement” event for Charlotte in celebration of her years of leadership is planned for Wednesday, September 28, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at the Seymour Library. The event is open to the public. Library Director Carl Gouveia says the Friends are one of two entities that raise money for the library through various fundraisers. “The Friends hold a fall and spring book sale, a membership drive each spring, and sell logo tote bags and other items to raise funds,” he explains. The funds raised help support various services at the library including the summer reading programs for children, teens and adults. Last year the Friends purchased a new staff copier. “They underwrite our hospitality fund,” Gouveia continues. “They purchased our public color copier several years ago. They also volunteer for the library, helping to staff booths and other library jobs. Every year, they help fund the Volunteer Appreciation Brunch and the new plate for our Volunteer of the Year plaque.” Charlotte describes the Friends as a group of people who love the library and want to help support it and its programs. She says now is the right time for her to step down from her leadership post. Lynne Gardner will be taking over the presidential reins. Charlotte says she would not have served as president for so long a time, but, “I didn’t want the Friends to end, so I stayed in the position. It’s good to have somebody new come in and do it.” Charlotte notes that by-laws for the group set limits for the time one person can serve in an officer position. Libraries have always played a key role in Charlotte’s life. She worked as
a school librarian in the Greece Central School District and then at the Ginther Elementary School in Brockport. Her husband, Norm, says Charlotte knew as a student in elementary school that she wanted to become a librarian. “She has a passion for it,” he explains, “just like an artist or a photographer.” Fellow Friends member Barb Hefke grew up with Charlotte in Brockport. She says Charlotte has always been very community oriented. “She is very generous with her time,” Hefke notes. “She helped design the present Ginther Library ... she centers her life around libraries.” In addition to her volunteer work at Seymour, both Norm and Hefke say Charlotte has spent sixteen years volunteering at the library at Hope Hall in Gates. The school provides opportunity for at-risk or educationally stranded children to become successful lifelong learners. “They are dependent on volunteers,” Hefke says of Hope Hall. “Charlotte goes in one or two days a week ... she helps get books, the students there need a lot of support.” Norm adds that Charlotte performs all the duties of a librarian at Hope Hall including processing and shelving books. When she first began, Norm helped build bookshelves for the library. Fran Welch, another member of the Friends, says Charlotte, “did everything” over the years for the group. He remembers that at one time Charlotte told him she had been reading the bylaws and joked about getting out of her job as president as she had already served two terms. “I told her we never really elected you,” Welch laughs. “We can get you for another two terms.” Charlotte found a way to “get back” at Welch shortly after when she dubbed him Friends vice-president in a listing of “officers” printed on a folder made up for a library event. “It was a joke between us,” Welch says. He gives credit to both Charlotte and Norm for all their work on the book sales. “When the library needed something, she is the one they went to, she was the go-to gal,” Welch says. Friends member Sue Edmonds says it is Charlotte who has kept the Friends group going for so long. “She is a wonderful person to work with,” Edmonds says, and explains that Charlotte was always very involved
Charlotte Wright has been a familiar face at the Seymour Library for years. She is stepping down as president of the Friends of the Seymour Library group and a “retirement” event is planned at the library September 28. K. Gabalski photo.
with the summer reading program for children. “She was dedicated to the children, (making sure) they had all the options available.” Charlotte’s work and volunteering at local libraries over the past halfcentury have meant that she has seen
many changes in the services libraries provide to their patrons. Technology means libraries, “have new ways to help and serve people, and that’s good,” Charlotte observes, “but I don’t believe that books will ever completely disappear.”

Churchville-Chili’s Link Crew creates an easier transition Over 300 nervous freshmen gathered outside the gym at Churchville-Chili High School on August 31. At 8 a.m., the doors opened and they were welcomed in with music, dancing, energy, smiles and enthusiasm by the C-C Link Crew. The school’s Link Crew leaders - more than 40 student volunteers from the junior and senior classes - began their year-long commitment to guide the new ninth-graders to success in high school. This is the first year for Link Crew at C-C SHS. The student-directed program pairs two Link Crew leaders, acting as positive role models and mentors, with about a dozen incoming freshmen. The Link Crew groups remain together throughout the year, lending support and challenging members to go beyond their comfort zones, meet new people and try new things. “Our Link Crew student leaders decided to get involved last April, and trained for three full days this summer,” said C-C school counselor Tracie Swalbach. “Even before our orientation event today, they were on the phones, contacting their group members and getting to know them. These kids are extremely committed to seeing their freshmen have fun and rewarding experiences here in high school.”
Emma Clark (l) and Rachel Kuhn (r) exemplify the enthusiasm and positive energy Link Crew mentors supply to their charges throughout the year. Provided photo.
Link Crew, an international program used in more than 3,000 schools, is based on the many studies that show that if students have a positive experience their first year in high school, their chances for success increase dramatically. The program promotes making real connections, thus increasing school safety and boosting self-esteem and character development. It includes orientation plus continuing academic, social and leader-initiated follow-up activities. The Link Crew leaders at C-C consist of a mixed group, having interests and involvements ranging from art and theatre to sports, math, science and more. “This is a win-win for all of our students,” said Swalbach. “Leaders push themselves and their group members to get more involved, to participate in different activities. With the group, freshmen come into the year with ready-made support. They have peer resources. They know who to ask and where to go for help.” Churchville-Chili Link Crew leaders for 2016-2017 include: Amanda Addis, Braden Alessi, Molly Alessi, Umaru Andrews, Jamie Anzalone, Anthony Arline, Meagan Bader, Emma Bennett, Helena Buttons, Coral Catalina, Emma Clark, Isabella Colon, Nicholas Colucci, Rachel Czolgosz, Rebecca Czolgosz, Marissa DeFranco, Maria Esposito, Delaney Finewood, Jocelyn Hernandez, Kianna Jackson, Savannah Kellenberger, Rachel Kuhn, Thomas Lampanaro, John Larson, Mia Latone, Nurah Maali, Danielle Mitchell, Madalyn Motsay, Zach Olsen, Shane O’Neill, Daniel Phan, Jessica Piper, Abigail Post, Mariah Rauf, Molly Reyngoudt, Jon Sanfratello, Abby Sauer, Jim Seeman, Cameron Shuman, Kylie Taladay, Natalie Tegler, Rachael Thomas, Lucille Tomin, Alex Voglewede, Jayson Wallace and Zach Woodruff. The program at Churchville-Chili High School is managed by Assistant Principal Jason Cline, school counselors Tracie Swalbach and Kate Krysty, and teachers Heather Burns and Wendyann Larsen. Hawley announces much needed disaster relief coming to local farmers Due to harsh drought conditions experienced by many of New York’s farmers, Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C,I-Batavia) announced that Genesee, Monroe and Orleans Counties have been designated natural disaster areas and are eligible for assistance through the United States Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency. State officials will conduct on-site assessments of the damage to local farms and work with Cornell University experts to devise recovery solutions. “Farmers are the backbone of New York’s already excellent, diversified and growing agriculture sector,” Hawley said.
“As the former owner and operator of our family farm for many years, I can personally attest to the determination of our famers to battle ever-changing weather and devastating floods and drought in Western New York. It is important to protect the livelihood of our producers and assist them when unforeseen circumstances threaten their prosperity. I am pleased the federal government is offering our famers this much needed assistance.” For further information and a list of services available, visit http://off i c e s . s c . e g o v. u s d a . g o v / l o c a t o r / app?state=ny&agency=fsa. CHANNELING POSITIVE ENERGY As the medical community has increasingly come to accept that there is a spiritual dimension to healing, it has become quite common for physicians to refer patients for religious counseling, particularly to help them cope with grief and terminal illness. This is done in the belief that treating the whole person can bring about better outcomes than those produced by focusing specifically on one area. Research shows that expressions of faith help produce a stronger immune system and cut the severity of depression. Clearly, if the mind rules the body, it would seem to be of great benefit to suffuse the
mind with faith. A positive attitude fostered by a belief in something greater than ourselves is empowering. When properly planned, a funeral can provide lasting satisfaction and comfort to the survivors. THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME can assist you in planning and coordinating all of the details and will explain all of the available options. A slice of Americana, this arrangement represents a small portion of Bill Nolan’s collection of nineteenth and twentieth century political ephemera on display at the Newman Riga Library in Churchville. Mr. Nolan has been collecting items like these for most of his life. Some of the items on display include cigar boxes, pins, shaving mugs, tea sets, canes and even a car license plate holder. Hilton CSD names June Eichas School-Related Professional of the Year June Eichas, teaching assistant at Village Elementary School in Hilton, was named School-Related Professional (SRP) of the Year at the staff convocation at Hilton High School on September 6. For the past 17 years, Eichas has treasured and respected her students for the unique individuals they are and works hard to advance each child’s social, emotional and academic skills. Her coworkers describe her as kind, compassionate, selfless and reliable. “June is a model citizen of character and compassion, and makes our learning community and world a better place, said one nominator. “Her ability to think she can do better, try something differently, and hope for more has pushed me to become a better teacher, said another. The other SRP of the Year finalists were: Brit Brattlie, nurse at Village Elementary School; Pat Jarvis, teaching assistant at Northwood Elementary School; and Becky Myers, teacher’s aide at Hilton High School. Hilton Central School District School-Related Professional of the Year honors the exceptional skills and initiative shown by Hilton staff members. Hilton CSD names Stephanie Harney Teacher of the Year The Hilton Central Schools Teachers Association (HCSTA) 2016-17 Teacher of the Year Award was presented at the annual staff convocation at Hilton High School in September. This year’s honoree is Quest Elementary School Library Media Specialist Stephanie Harney, who is described by students and staff as creative, a good listener, passionate, and even a superhero. Harney joined the Hilton School District in 1996 as a classroom teacher at Northwood Elementary School. She taught for two years in Pennsylvania before returning to Hilton in 2001 as a library media specialist at Village Elementary School. In 2007, she joined the staff at Quest Elementary School because of an interest in the International Baccalaureate Programme, and a love for research and inquiry. At Quest, Harney has grown the library collection from 15,000 to approximately 21,267 books and 2,304 e-books. She was instrumental in winning Quest two Follett Challenge Grants - $5,000 in 2014 and $30,000 in 2016. “Stephanie works hard to make sure the inventory in the library is aligned with current planners,” said Nancy Pickering, Board of Education president. “She cares so deeply for all of our students, and students fall in love with the library and all that a world-class library can offer...because of Stephanie.”
In the Hilton community, Harney is the driving force behind Hilton Cares, an organization dedicated to projects that impact the health and well being of children in the Hilton School District. As president, Harney has directed projects that include a much-needed home renovation for a Hilton family, an annual coat drive, a scholarship fund and sponsorship of a 5K for a Quest student battling a rare disease. Harney has a bachelor of science in early childhood education from Lock Haven University, a master’s degree in education from The College at Brockport, and a master’s degree in school library and information technologies from Mansfield State University of Pennsylvania. The finalists for this year’s award included: Joelle Cain and Mike Childs, Hilton High School; Nicole Allen-Hickey and Scott Meagher, Merton Williams Middle School; Christine Clark and Laura Mayer, Northwood Elementary School; Alecia Francesca, Quest Elementary School; and Ammie Cummings and Michele Farrell, Village Elementary School. Nominees must have more than five years of exceptional service to the district, active involvement in the Hilton community, and have made a substantial impact on the lives of their students and colleagues. Byron-Bergen freshmen begin year with insights into smart social media use Character building is central to the mission of Byron-Bergen Jr./Sr. High School, and it is particularly important for ninth-graders as they make the transition to high school. The school held a special orientation session on August 31 for freshmen students and their families that included a presentation on character and responsible social media use. “Now is the time to increase student awareness of the potential pluses and minuses of having an online presence,” said Principal Patrick McGee. “We want kids to take advantage of the valuable connections social media can put at their fingertips. But we don’t want any of our students to make costly mistakes that might affect their futures.” At the center of the school’s orientation was guest speaker Scott Fitch, a respected expert on social media and cyberbullying as well as the varisty basketball coach at Fairport High School. His message, “Pause before you post” serves as a strong warning to young people who often do not consider the consequences of their actions on Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and other social media platforms.
Fitch challenged his young audience to share their unedited posts with him and with their parents. He asked them if they would feel comfortable doing that: if they were proud of how their posts represented them. He reminded students that nothing is ever private online. Fitch told of experiences his own students had, of being turned down for valuable scholarships or job opportunities because decision-makers had looked them up online and felt they did not represent the values of the organization. Even top high school athletes have missed college recruitment opportunities because of a single ill-advised post, discriminatory statement, or cyberbullying activities. Students gave positive feedback and many parents told McGee they felt the message was something every student at the school would benefit from hearing. The Byron-Bergen Central School District’s emphasis on educating the whole student earned it the designation of New York District of Character from Character.org for 2015-2018. BBCSD’s districtwide framework for character education teaches students about leadership, ethics, decision-making and respect. Provided information

Zarpentine Farms celebrates tradition with the community 2016 marks the 42nd anniversary of the original Zarpentine Farm in Hilton. “From our humble beginnings as a small farm stand to our current retail store on Burritt Road, our farm has always been a family affair,” said owner Ron Zarpentine. Ron Zarpentine took over the operation of the 98-acre farm from his parents, Edith and Lon, in 1975. “My mother manned the cash register while dad helped in the orchards,” Ron added. In 1975, 750 apple trees were planted and another 1,200 were planted the following year. Their barn was remodeled into the retail store found today with room for cold storage, a cider press and a fully functioning bakery that bakes its products fresh daily. Zarpentine’s son, Rich, came on board in 1997 when the elder Zarpentine was seriously injured in a snowmobile accident. His daughter, Kim, joined in to help operate the farm in 2000 and son, Rob, began working at the bakery in 2003. Kim’s husband, Jim, is credited with helping to make the Corn Maize what it is, as well as assisting in other aspects of the farm. “Even the grandchildren, Grace, Eden, Jacob and Austin, have pitched in and it’s just been a great family effort over the years,” Ron said. Though some family members have gone on to pursue other interests, Ron remains at the helm. He is very proud that the land, which has been in his mother’s family since the early 1800’s, has been worked by his whole family. This year, the Zarpentine Corn Maize will be in honor of the New York Warrior Alliance, which supports the wounded military and their caregivers. A portion of the proceeds from the seven weeks of the maize will be donated to the New York Warrior Alliance. All funding to the NY Warrior Alliance stays local. The maize
stretches over 20 acres and opens September 16 through October 30. The weekend of September 24 and 25 marks Wounded Warrior Weekend. Representatives of each branch of the armed services will attend with wounded warriors and all veterans will receive $2 off maize admission with identification. The maize will have a variety of events every weekend. Watch for details in their ads. The Farm Market, located at 163 Burritt Road, Hilton, is now open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. with their famous fritters, cider, fry cakes, pies and baked goods, apples, as they ripen, and seasonal vegetables. A Public Safety Reminder Passing a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing is against the law and could result in serious fines, license suspension or something much, much worse. Please remember to stop until the red lights on the school bus are turned off and never pass on the right side of the bus (where children enter and exit). Please be patient and use caution to ensure safety for all.

IN THE TIMES AHEAD
Often one of the first areas to experience the budget ax in slow markets, cutbacks in advertising can dig a hole that is very expensive to climb out of when conditions improve. When considering what to do with your budget in the months ahead, consider the following thought:
•
Advertising is not overhead. It is a sales tool, proven over decades and an integral part of how consumers make decisions. Why consider cutting back on one of your best business-building assets?
•
In times when you are not advertising, others are. That precious level of awareness and top-of-mind consideration you paid so dearly for will diminish rapidly when your advertising frequency diminishes. In slow times, capitalize upon the equity you have earned by maintaining a strong program. Coming back later and trying to establish a presence will be much more expensive than riding your current momentum.

IDEAS TO THINK ABOUT
Author Richard O. Reisem will present a talk in the Village of Brockport Courtroom on Friday, October 7 at 7 p.m., at 49 State Street. The event, based on his book Myron Holley: Canal Builder/Abolitionist/Unsung Hero, is sponsored by the Emily Knapp Museum. Richard O. Reisem has written 15 books since retiring from Eastman Kodak’s Communication and Public Affairs Departments. He graduated from Iowa State University with major studies in architecture and journalism. His 31-year career at Eastman Kodak included speechwriter for six of the company’s CEOs.
Among Myron Holley’s many achievements, he served as the Superintendent of Construction of the Erie Canal. He also founded the first Horticultural Society in Western New York, the First Unitarian Church in Rochester, and the anti-slavery Liberty Party. His presentation will focus on the life and legacy of Myron Holley, one of New York’s most distinguished residents. Richard crafts a story of Myron Holley’s profound influence on the course of New York State’s history. In collaboration with James Seymour and others, he brought the Erie Canal through Brockport and surrounding communities, thus ensuring the rapid and prosperous growth of business and industry in western New York. In gratitude to Myron Holley for promoting the building of the Erie Canal, the village of Saltport changed its name to Holley, and many communities along the canal’s path named streets in his honor. Copies of his book, Myron Holley: Canal Builder/Abolitionist/Unsung Hero may be purchased that evening. Following his presentation, refreshments will be served in the museum, which is open to the public. Provided information

sports & recreation Richardson’s three points paces Bees by Warren Kozireski Senior Ryan Richardson scored the first two goals and assisted on the third Byron-Bergen Elba to a 3-0 boys’ soccer victory - their third of the young season. Richardson’s first goal came just 5:26 into the contest as he took a throughpass from junior Kylar Chambry, one touched around the charging goalkeeper and found the back of the net for a 1-0 Bees lead. Holley fond some offensive rhythm early in the second half as two shots cleared the crossbar and another was tipped just wide over the first 19 minutes of the second stanza. Byron-Bergen gave themselves a cushion at 62:09 as junior Brendan Kendall intercepted a goal-kick at midfield and quickly found Wade Thompson. He passed down the left wing to Richardson, who put it into the upper right corner of the net.
Speed was a factor on the third tally as Richardson raced around a defender and along the left end-line before finding a wide open Aaron Gaytan sitting on the far post for an easy tap-in for the final goal. Bees goalkeeper Brandon Kropf made four saves to register his second consecutive shutout and help them improve to 3-0-0. They also hold a 2-0 lead against Wheatland-Chili in the championship game of their annual tournament - a game halted by lightning last Saturday. “His goal is to score every game, ByronBergen head coach Ken Rogoyski said of Richardson. “It’s tough because of how close he is marked. On that last goal three defenders converged on him and he was able to make the pass. “The 3-0 score doesn’t really reflect how close this game was; it is very misleading. Every game against Holley is a battle and always has been.” Even with the loss, the Hawks sit atop the Genesee Division with a 2-1-0 record and are 3-2-0 overall.
Brockport Symphony Orchestra presents “A Friends & Family Celebration” The Brockport Symphony Orchestra, celebrating the start of its seventh season, will present “A Friends and Family Celebration” on Friday, September 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the historic sanctuary at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 14 State Street in the Village of Brockport. Admission and parking are free, and donations to the orchestra with a portion for St. Luke’s and canned items for the Brockport Ecumenical Food Shelf will be gratefully accepted at the door. Under the baton of music director Jonathan Allentoff, this concert will showcase the talents of guest vocal artist Mary Wojciechowski and trumpet soloist Steve Hahn. Wojciechowski, who recently appeared as soloist at the Corning Museum of Glass
and the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival, will perform Pure Imagination from “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory,” Never Never Land from “Peter Pan,” and In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening from “Here Comes the Groom.” She will also join the orchestra for the Brockport Alma Mater by Marie Lillian Weldon Hahn, the orchestra’s principal trumpet and award-winning recording artist, will perform Leroy Anderson’s Trumpeter’s Lullaby. The program also includes Menuets 1 & 2 from Music for the Royal Fireworks by G. F. Handel, Waltz No. 16 by Johannes Brahms, and Forgotten Dreams by Leroy Anderson. Following the concert, there will be a dessert reception in Parish Hall celebrating Family Weekend. Provided information

Members of the Staples Upstate New York Team initiative, “Staples Soul,” gathered recently to lend a hand to Victory Road Inc., an outreach program designed to provide a continuum of care that focuses on total well-being. The Victory Road goal is to work with children and families to intervene in their situations before they come to a level of need that requires major intervention. Staples workers assisted Victory Road staff members with assembling packets that will be distributed around the community to promote Victory Road’s Momma Care Program, a support group for teen moms. The group gathers once or twice a week to
share education, support and camaraderie with other young moms-to-be. Participants receive “Momma Bucks” every time they attend the support group. The “Momma Bucks” can be redeemed for items they may need for their baby. The “Staples Soul” program is designed to provide community outreach opportunities for Staples employees. The Upstate Team will assist Victory Road again in September as Victory Road staffers and volunteers prepare a new office space in Greece. For more information about Victory Road programs, call 730-7777. Provided information

Greater Brockport Chamber of Commerce receives check from Seniors’ Choice Communities

As one of the newest businesses investing in the Brockport region, Seniors’ Choice Communities is building a new independent and assisted living community that features upscale apartments and services off Redman Road in the Heritage Square development. “Seniors’ Choice Communities is pleased to support the Greater Brockport Chamber of Commerce programs that promote commerce and good will for businesses and residents in the region” said Louis Giardino, Chief Development Officer for Rochester based Top Capital of New York who owns Seniors’ Choice Communities. “The Chamber of Commerce, the College at Brockport and the community as a whole have been very supportive of our development of the Seniors’ Choice at Heritage Square project. We look forward to our opening in early November to share the beautiful buildings and grounds with seniors and their families,” Giardino added. Seniors’ Choice at Heritage Square features six apartment styles that include granite counters, stainless appliances, remote control fireplaces, wall mounted TV with cable included, tiled bath(s) and all utilities (except phone). In addition, all apartment monthly leases include three meals a day, transportation services, valet parking, concierge services along with an extensive calendar of arts, education and activities programs. As the 2016-17 school year accelerates into full gear, Brockport Central School District would like to remind motorists of school bus safety practices. The key is to remain alert and watch for buses and students walking alongside the road traveling to bus stops or school buildings. Be aware of flashing amber lights indicating that the school bus is preparing to stop and red lights signifying that children are getting on or off the school bus. According to state law, motorists must stop when the red lights are flashing. Brockport school bus drivers are trained to pull over to relieve traffic, but only when they are able to do so safely.

According to the NYS Education Department, the number of passing motorist fatalities has decreased steadily over the last five decades in New York State, however, the number of close calls or near misses continue to plague the school transportation system. Motorists convicted of passing a stopped school bus while children are loading or unloading are subject to a five-point violation, a $250-$400 fine or 30 day imprisonment for the first conviction. Brockport CSD appreciates motorists’ partnership in helping create a safe environment for its students and community members. Provided information

Little Free Library opens on Parma View Drive Begun by Todd Bol of Hudson, Wisconsin and Rick Brooks of U.W. - Madison in 2009, who wished to impact reading education in a unique way. Sharing each others’ talents, they built and displayed little libraries in their home towns. Their mantra “Take a Book, Return a Book” soon took off. By 2011 there were 400 around the world. By January 2015 it jumped to 25,000. June 2016 topped 40,000 around the world. Displayed in the photo is the latest Little Free Library in Hilton, number 43,622 at 318 Parma View Drive at the home of Sue, Mike and Rebecca Copek. Last Spring, the Copek’s attended a class through the Hilton Continuing Education Program, which is being offered again this fall. This class was of great help in kicking off our excitement in getting this project underway. There is a good selection of young readers’ books, but many for adults as well. If you haven’t read “Boys in a Boat” it is available. Or if you are a big fan of Julie Andrews, her memoir “Home” is available. Other classics; Dr. Seuss, and even a baking book, “101 Gourmet Cupcakes” are found in our Little Free Library. If you were to search: littlefreelibraries.org, and type in a zip code, you will discover there are libraries at 125 West Avenue, 193 Lake Avenue, and 26 East Wautoma Beach Road, all in Hilton. People actually vacation as they check out Little Free Library’s around the United States. On a recent trip to Concord, New Hampshire, we visited a library half a mile from our friends’ home; she was not aware of the program. We try to rotate books often, and have a guest book or comments and requests. If certain types of books don’t move, we will replace them with others to entice reading. Our library was contracted to The Woodshop of St. Michael’s located on St. Paul Street, Rochester. This is a program directed toward teaching woodworking and life skills to the youth in the city. We supplied recycled materials, and general specifications, and gave them room for creativity. We installed our post in concrete. We were sure to call 811 to have a stake-out so as not to interrupt any cable, gas or phone service lines. The stake-out will be done in 48 hours. You may then dig after that date. We hope you enjoy the program. Perhaps you would consider adding your own creativity, and interest in promoting reading as well. Is there a Little Free Library on your street? Comments Transportation Department announces winners from school bus training event On August 11 and 13 we held our 3rd annual Kindergarten School Bus Training event for parents/guardians and their kindergarteners. We started them with a bus ride from the transportation department over to Ginther school in Brockport. At that time they were shown how to use the bus seatbelts as it is school board policy that all of our students in grades K through 12 wear them. Once they arived at the school they moved through six different training stations related to school bus safety. When the Saturday session was completed we held a drawing for four kindergarteners to receive a gift certificate provided to our department by Walmat for this event. The winners were Aaliya Dziadkowicz, Aurora Snowden, Brandon Jackson and Brody Mottshaw. The event was also attended by Superintendent Dr. Lesli Myers and Ginther school principal, Debra Waye. Churchville-Chili’s International Baccalaureate Program celebrates graduates and growth For the past two years, students at Churchville-Chili Senior High School have had the option to participate in International Baccalaureate® (IB) – a comprehensive, liberal arts-based program that encourages critical thinking and community involvement and helps young people prepare for life and college. Eleven candidates began the program as juniors in 2014-15, and this past June all 11 graduated with their IB diplomas. “This is an incredible accomplishment for these students,” said C-C SHS principal William Geraci. “They challenged themselves to meet rigorous international academic standards and every one of them succeeded. We are very proud of them.” Churchville-Chili IB Diploma Programme graduates include: Nicole Cammilleri, Nicholas DiFlorio, Gabrielle Kolmer, Quyen Nguyen, Andrew Nicchitta, Kathleen Ohman, Melissa Prewasnicak, Emily Sabo, Zachary Vaughn and Leanne Walker. Students at C-C SHS can choose to enroll in the comprehensive IB Diploma Programme or sign up for individual IB classes. More than 300 students participated in ala carte classes last year, and Geraci would like to see that number grow to include every junior and senior. “Even one IB class can change a kid’s life,” he said. “They walk away thinking differently about the world, more determined, more goal-oriented, more organized.”
“IB is acknowledged worldwide as the best way for students to prepare for college,” said IB psychology teacher Mary Kay Maslanka. “They learn the vital skill of time management, and most importantly, how to analyze and think for themselves, not just regurgitate what they hear or read.” Churchville-Chili is committed to growing the IB program and ensuring student success. Teachers are required to achieve three levels of IB training, and participate in collaborative statewide roundtables, international conferences and continuing professional development. Currently, more than 20 C-C teachers are IB-certified. Students in the diploma program not only receive group and individualized support from C-C teachers, counselors and administrators, they also support each other socially and academically. The school works hard to provide support to students in ala carte classes as well. Students will have the opportunity to learn more about IB and register for the program in the fall of their sophomore year. An IB Parent Information Night is scheduled for November 9 at the high school PAC beginning at 7 p.m. Contact IB Coordinator Kelley Fahy at KFahy@cccsd.org for more information For more information on the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, visit www.ibo.org/en/programmes/diploma-programme/. Bergen pays tribute to a fallen hero
AUCTION
AT BonTrAger’s AucTion cenTer 4 miles west of Batavia, 1/2 mile south of Rt. 33
Congressman Chris Collins unveils the memorial plaque at the Post Office in Bergen Saturday, September 10. It will now be the Barry G. Miller Post Office in honor of Miller who was killed a year ago in an accident involving ambulance in which he was riding to answer a call for help. Members of the Miller family are on the left. K. Gabalski photo. by Kristina Gabalski The Bergen community established its own hometown memorial to Barry Miller Saturday, September 10, when a memorial plaque was unveiled during a dedication ceremony naming the Bergen Post Office the Barry G. Miller Post Office in honor of Miller’s contributions to his community. Miller, a volunteer firefighter and EMT, was killed in the line of duty September 23, 2015, while responding with the Bergen Ambulance to a call for help. “He desired to serve rather than be served,” Miller’s father, Tracy Miller, said during the ceremonies. “We wish Barry was here today to see how special he really was.” Miller’s sister, Pamela McCarthy, called her brother a “hometown boy” who “loved this community ... we are thankful he will be remembered for many years to come and are so glad his story will be kept alive.” Congressman Chris Collins, State Senator Mike Ranzenhofer, State Assemblyman Steve Hawley, Jared Jones of the Office of Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, and Manager of Post Office Operations Ronald Coon attended the ceremonies - which included a presentation of American flags which flew over the U.S. Capitol - to the Miller Family and Chief
Kevin Finucane of the Bergen Fire Department. Congressman Collins also unveiled the memorial plaque. Collins credited Town of Bergen Judge Joseph Nenni, who served on the Bergen Town Board with Miller, for setting the process in motion to have the Bergen Post Office named in honor of Miller. Collins said he was thrilled to make the call informing the Bergen community that President Obama had signed legislation which made the naming official. Miller was, “A key member of the Bergen community,” Congressman Collins said, and noted Miller’s 31 years as a member of the Bergen Volunteer Fire Department, including 10 as assistant emergency medical services chief. Miller also served as a member of the Bergen Town Board and was a Genesee County Coroner at the time of his death. He was the owner of Miller’s Millworks in Bergen and the Beaver River Lodge in the Adirondacks. “We will never forget Barry,” Congressman Collins said. Ronald Coon, Manager of Post Office Operations, explained that naming the Post Office in honor of Miller is a “special tribute,” which is particularly fitting as Miller’s mother, Loretta, worked at the Bergen Post Office for 30 years.

St. Luke’s Episcopal Church seeks new choir members For those who have ever sung in a choir or chorus, or just sing for the love of music, consider joining the choir of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Brockport. There are many benefits that come from singing: physically, emotionally and socially. It can improve sleep and posture, boost immunity, improve breathing, and help sharpen one’s mind. Singing can lift moods, relieve stress, and heal emotions. Choir practice is Wednesday evenings, 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday morning warm-ups start at 8:15 a.m., and worship service begins at 9 a.m., ending by 10:15 a.m. St. Luke’s is located at 14 State Street, Brockport.
“The service is full of beautiful and ancient rituals, with music dating back to medieval times, but many of the songs we sing (called “anthems”) are new. We mix things up a bit, and might even sing “Don’t worry, be happy” by Bobby McFerrin one Sunday and then a motet by J.S. Bach the next,” says Brenda Tremblay, St. Luke’s choir director. “Whether you’re a pitch-perfect singer or simply a car karaoke enthusiast, St. Luke’s choir is the joyful singing experience you’ve been looking for.” This is an open rehearsal with no commitment and new members are welcome to join at any time. For more information about St. Luke’s choir, contact Brenda at 637-6650. Provided information
