Long-time president of Friends of the Seymour Library stepping down by Kristina Gabalski Charlotte Wright may be “retiring” as president of the Friends of the Seymour Library, but she has no intention of leaving the group and will continue her work on the semiannual book sales. Her seventeen years with the Friends have, “meant a lot,” to her, Charlotte says. “Libraries are important, whether school or public, it’s a wonderful service to provide to people.” A “retirement” event for Charlotte in celebration of her years of leadership is planned for Wednesday, September 28, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at the Seymour Library. The event is open to the public. Library Director Carl Gouveia says the Friends are one of two entities that raise money for the library through various fundraisers. “The Friends hold a fall and spring book sale, a membership drive each spring, and sell logo tote bags and other items to raise funds,” he explains. The funds raised help support various services at the library including the summer reading programs for children, teens and adults. Last year the Friends purchased a new staff copier. “They underwrite our hospitality fund,” Gouveia continues. “They purchased our public color copier several years ago. They also volunteer for the library, helping to staff booths and other library jobs. Every year, they help fund the Volunteer Appreciation Brunch and the new plate for our Volunteer of the Year plaque.” Charlotte describes the Friends as a group of people who love the library and want to help support it and its programs. She says now is the right time for her to step down from her leadership post. Lynne Gardner will be taking over the presidential reins. Charlotte says she would not have served as president for so long a time, but, “I didn’t want the Friends to end, so I stayed in the position. It’s good to have somebody new come in and do it.” Charlotte notes that by-laws for the group set limits for the time one person can serve in an officer position. Libraries have always played a key role in Charlotte’s life. She worked as
a school librarian in the Greece Central School District and then at the Ginther Elementary School in Brockport. Her husband, Norm, says Charlotte knew as a student in elementary school that she wanted to become a librarian. “She has a passion for it,” he explains, “just like an artist or a photographer.” Fellow Friends member Barb Hefke grew up with Charlotte in Brockport. She says Charlotte has always been very community oriented. “She is very generous with her time,” Hefke notes. “She helped design the present Ginther Library ... she centers her life around libraries.” In addition to her volunteer work at Seymour, both Norm and Hefke say Charlotte has spent sixteen years volunteering at the library at Hope Hall in Gates. The school provides opportunity for at-risk or educationally stranded children to become successful lifelong learners. “They are dependent on volunteers,” Hefke says of Hope Hall. “Charlotte goes in one or two days a week ... she helps get books, the students there need a lot of support.” Norm adds that Charlotte performs all the duties of a librarian at Hope Hall including processing and shelving books. When she first began, Norm helped build bookshelves for the library. Fran Welch, another member of the Friends, says Charlotte, “did everything” over the years for the group. He remembers that at one time Charlotte told him she had been reading the bylaws and joked about getting out of her job as president as she had already served two terms. “I told her we never really elected you,” Welch laughs. “We can get you for another two terms.” Charlotte found a way to “get back” at Welch shortly after when she dubbed him Friends vice-president in a listing of “officers” printed on a folder made up for a library event. “It was a joke between us,” Welch says. He gives credit to both Charlotte and Norm for all their work on the book sales. “When the library needed something, she is the one they went to, she was the go-to gal,” Welch says. Friends member Sue Edmonds says it is Charlotte who has kept the Friends group going for so long. “She is a wonderful person to work with,” Edmonds says, and explains that Charlotte was always very involved

with the summer reading program for children. “She was dedicated to the children, (making sure) they had all the options available.” Charlotte’s work and volunteering at local libraries over the past halfcentury have meant that she has seen
many changes in the services libraries provide to their patrons. Technology means libraries, “have new ways to help and serve people, and that’s good,” Charlotte observes, “but I don’t believe that books will ever completely disappear.”

Brockport Symphony Orchestra presents “A Friends & Family Celebration” The Brockport Symphony Orchestra, celebrating the start of its seventh season, will present “A Friends and Family Celebration” on Friday, September 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the historic sanctuary at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 14 State Street in the Village of Brockport. International Jazz Festival, will perform Pure Imagination from “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory,” Never Never Land from “Peter Pan,” and In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening from “Here Comes the Groom.” She will also join the orchestra for the Brockport Alma Mater by Marie Lillian Weldon Hahn, the orchestra’s principal trumpet and awardwinning recording artist, will perform Leroy Anderson’s Trumpeter’s Lullaby. The program also includes Menuets 1 & 2 from Music for the Royal Fireworks by G. F. Handel, Waltz No. 16 by Johannes Brahms, and Forgotten Dreams by Leroy Anderson. Zarpentine Farms celebrates tradition with the community 2016 marks the 42nd anniversary of the original Zarpentine Farm in Hilton. “From our humble beginnings as a small farm stand to our current retail store on Burritt Road, our farm has always been a family affair,” said owner Ron Zarpentine. Ron Zarpentine took over the operation of the 98-acre farm from his parents, Edith and Lon, in 1975. “My mother manned the cash register while dad helped in the orchards,” Ron added. In 1975, 750 apple trees were planted and another 1,200 were planted the following year. Their barn was remodeled into the retail store found today with room for cold storage, a cider press and a fully functioning bakery that bakes its products fresh daily. Zarpentine’s son, Rich, came on board in 1997 when the elder Zarpentine was seriously injured in a snowmobile accident. His daughter, Kim, joined in to help operate the farm in 2000 and son, Rob, began working at the bakery in 2003. Kim’s husband, Jim, is credited with helping to make the Corn Maize what it is, as well as assisting in other aspects of the farm. “Even the grandchildren, Grace, Eden, Jacob and Austin, have pitched in and it’s just been a great family effort over the years,” Ron said. Though some family members have gone on to pursue other interests, Ron remains at the helm. Steve Coglitore has been around cars since he was 9, when his father founded LeRoy Motors back in 1967 starting with Chevrolet and Oldsmobile. Steve started in sales in 1984 and worked his way through several different departments at his family’s dealership. He’s worked with GM for years, after LeRoy Motors expanded in 2000. Hilton CSD names Stephanie Harney Teacher of the Year The Hilton Central Schools Teachers Association (HCSTA) 2016-17 Teacher of the Year Award was presented at the annual staff convocation at Hilton High School in September. This year’s honoree is Quest Elementary School Library Media Specialist Stephanie Harney, who is described by students and staff as creative, a good listener, passionate, and even a superhero. Harney joined the Hilton School District in 1996 as a classroom teacher at Northwood Elementary School. She taught for two years in Pennsylvania before returning to Hilton in 2001 as a library media specialist at Village Elementary School. In 2007, she joined the staff at Quest Elementary School because of an interest in the International Baccalaureate Programme, and a love for research and inquiry. At Quest, Harney has grown the library collection from 15,000 to approximately 21,267 books and 2,304 e-books. She was instrumental in winning Quest two Follett Challenge Grants - $5,000 in 2014 and $30,000 in 2016. “Stephanie works hard to make sure the inventory in the library is aligned with current planners,” said Nancy Pickering, Board of Education president. “She cares so deeply for all of our students, and students fall in love with the library and all that a world-class library can offer...because of Stephanie.”
In the Hilton community, Harney is the driving force behind Hilton Cares, an organization dedicated to projects that impact the health and well being of children in the Hilton School District. As president, Harney has directed projects that include a much-needed home renovation for a Hilton family, an annual coat drive, a scholarship fund and sponsorship of a 5K for a Quest student battling a rare disease. Harney has a bachelor of science in early childhood education from Lock Haven University, a master’s degree in education from The College at Brockport, and a master’s degree in school library and information technologies from Mansfield State University of Pennsylvania. Suzanne M O’Brien Spencerport - Suzanne May (Chase) O’Brien passed away on her 81st birthday, September 6, 2016, in the presence of her loving husband of 10 years, John. Sue is survived by her husband, John; her daughter, Sandra (Gary) Weimer; and her sons, Stuart (Devinee Worrell) Sisk, and Steve Sisk; her stepdaughter, Trish Sapinsky; her grandchildren, Melissa, Philip, Elizabeth Suzanne, Benjamin, Samuel and Miriam Weimer, Scott Sisk, Jacob Robison, Tristan, Michael and Thomas Sisk, Tanya Sapinsky, Sarah, Nicole and Tim O’Brien Jr.; and by numerous beloved cousins. Sue was a lifelong resident of the Spencerport and Brockport areas who loved crafts of all kinds and spending time in her garden of flowers. She was a registered nurse and later volunteered at the former Lakeside Memorial Hospital, giving more than 10,000 volunteer hours. BOCES 2 CTE student-built house set on auction block BOCES 2 Career and Technical Education students have built the walls, run the plumbing and checked the electrical on a 1,056 square foot ranch that is listed for auction. The student-constructed three-bedroom, one-bath home is listed on Auctions International. The auction runs through Thursday, September 29 at 6 p.m. The house is a combined effort from four career and technical education programs: carpentry; plumbing and heating; residential and industrial electricity; and heating, ventilation and air conditioning. Students work on the house over a two-year time period under the guidance of CTE teachers. House includes double hung vinyl tilt-in windows, easy to clean and maintenance
free. The roof is comprised of 30-year architectural shingles. Interior doors are paneled and Masonite primed. Throughout the house is interior white primer paint. Build features 2x6 exterior wall studs, allowing for superior R19 insulation. Full 60” bathtub installed and the house includes attic crawl space. Hilton CSD to hold Alumni Hall of Fame Induction Hilton Central School District (HCSD) will induct three alumni into the Alumni Hall of Fame on Friday, September 30. This year’s inductees are: Ruth Herne Blodgett ‘72, award-winning author with over 30 published novels to date; Darren Lipomi, Ph.D. ‘01, associate professor, Dept. of NanoEngineering, University of California, San Diego; and Lieutenant Colonel Kyle D. Mullen ‘85, United States Air Force. Since 1999 the HCSD Alumni Hall of Fame has inducted 46 members and honored them and their accomplishments with the installation of a wall of plaques in the Hilton High School auditorium.
The inductees will take part in a full day of activities at Hilton High School. The public is invited to attend the induction ceremony from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the auditorium followed by a community reception from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. in the foyer. HCSD will also celebrate Homecoming on September 30. The parade begins at 5:45 p.m. at Quest Elementary School, 225 West Avenue, followed by the Hilton varsity football game versus Pittsford beginning at 7 p.m. at LeBeau Field. Staples initiative helps community Members of the Staples Upstate New York Team initiative, “Staples Soul,” gathered recently to lend a hand to Victory Road Inc., an outreach program designed to provide a continuum of care that focuses on total well-being. The Victory Road goal is to work with children and families to intervene in their situations before they come to a level of need that requires major intervention. Staples workers assisted Victory Road staff members with assembling packets that will be distributed around the community to promote Victory Road’s Momma Care Program, a support group for teen moms. The group gathers once or twice a week to
share education, support and camaraderie with other young moms-to-be. Participants receive “Momma Bucks” every time they attend the support group. The “Momma Bucks” can be redeemed for items they may need for their baby. The “Staples Soul” program is designed to provide community outreach opportunities for Staples employees. The Upstate Team will assist Victory Road again in September as Victory Road staffers and volunteers prepare a new office space in Greece. by Kristina Gabalski The Bergen community established its own hometown memorial to Barry Miller Saturday, September 10, when a memorial plaque was unveiled during a dedication ceremony naming the Bergen Post Office the Barry G. Miller Post Office in honor of Miller’s contributions to his community. Miller, a volunteer firefighter and EMT, was killed in the line of duty September 23, 2015, while responding with the Bergen Ambulance to a call for help. “He desired to serve rather than be served,” Miller’s father, Tracy Miller, said during the ceremonies. “We wish Barry was here today to see how special he really was.” Miller’s sister, Pamela McCarthy, called her brother a “hometown boy” who “loved this community ... we are thankful he will be remembered for many years to come and are so glad his story will be kept alive.” Congressman Chris Collins, State Senator Mike Ranzenhofer, State Assemblyman Steve Hawley, Jared Jones of the Office of Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, and Manager of Post Office Operations Ronald Coon attended the ceremonies - which included a presentation of American flags which flew over the U.S. Capitol - to the Miller Family and Chief
Kevin Finucane of the Bergen Fire Department. Congressman Collins also unveiled the memorial plaque. Collins credited Town of Bergen Judge Joseph Nenni, who served on the Bergen Town Board with Miller, for setting the process in motion to have the Bergen Post Office named in honor of Miller. Collins said he was thrilled to make the call informing the Bergen community that President Obama had signed legislation which made the naming official. Miller was, “A key member of the Bergen community,” Congressman Collins said, and noted Miller’s 31 years as a member of the Bergen Volunteer Fire Department, including 10 as assistant emergency medical services chief. Miller also served as a member of the Bergen Town Board and was a Genesee County Coroner at the time of his death. He was the owner of Miller’s Millworks in Bergen and the Beaver River Lodge in the Adirondacks. “We will never forget Barry,” Congressman Collins said. Ronald Coon, Manager of Post Office Operations, explained that naming the Post Office in honor of Miller is a “special tribute,” which is particularly fitting as Miller’s mother, Loretta, worked at the Bergen Post Office for 30 years.

As the 2016-17 school year accelerates into full gear, Brockport Central School District would like to remind motorists of school bus safety practices. The key is to remain alert and watch for buses and students walking alongside the road traveling to bus stops or school buildings. Be aware of flashing amber lights indicating that the school bus is preparing to stop and red lights signifying that children are getting on or off the school bus. According to state law, motorists must stop when the red lights are flashing. Brockport school bus drivers are trained to pull over to relieve traffic, but only when they are able to do so safely.
According to the NYS Education Department, the number of passing motorist fatalities has decreased steadily over the last five decades in New York State, however, the number of close calls or near misses continue to plague the school transportation system. Motorists convicted of passing a stopped school bus while children are loading or unloading are subject to a five-point violation, a $250-$400 fine or 30 day imprisonment for the first conviction. Little Free Library opens on Parma View Drive Begun by Todd Bol of Hudson, Wisconsin and Rick Brooks of U.W. - Madison in 2009, who wished to impact reading education in a unique way. Sharing each others’ talents, they built and displayed little libraries in their home towns. Their mantra “Take a Book, Return a Book� soon took off. By 2011 there were 400 around the world. By January 2015 it jumped to 25,000. June 2016 topped 40,000 around the world. Displayed in the photo is the latest Little Free Library in Hilton, number 43,622 at 318 Parma View Drive at the home of Sue, Mike and Rebecca Copek. Last Spring, the Copek’s attended a class through the Hilton Continuing Education Program, which is being offered again this fall. This class was of great help in kicking off our excitement in getting this project underway. There is a good selection of young readers’ books, but many for adults as well. If you haven’t read “Boys in a Boat� it is available. Or if you are a big fan of Julie Andrews, her memoir “Home� is available. Other classics; Dr. Seuss, and even a baking book, “101 Gourmet Cupcakes� are found in our Little Free Library. If you were to search: littlefreelibraries.org, and type in a zip code, you will discover there are libraries at 125 West Avenue, 193 Lake Avenue, and 26 East Wautoma Beach Road, all in Hilton. People actually vacation as they check out Little Free Library’s around the United States. On a recent trip to Concord, New Hampshire, we visited a library half a mile from our friends’ home; she was not aware of the program. We try to rotate books often, and have a guest book or comments and requests. If certain types of books don’t move, we will replace them with others to entice reading. Our library was contracted to The Woodshop of St. Michael’s located on St. Paul Street, Rochester. This is a program directed toward teaching woodworking and life skills to the youth in the city. We supplied recycled materials, and general specifications, and gave them room for creativity. We installed our post in concrete. We were sure to call 811 to have a stake-out so as not to interrupt any cable, gas or phone service lines. The stake-out will be done in 48 hours. You may then dig after that date. Byron-Bergen freshmen begin year with insights into smart social media use Character building is central to the mission of Byron-Bergen Jr./Sr. High School, and it is particularly important for ninth-graders as they make the transition to high school. The school held a special orientation session on August 31 for freshmen students and their families that included a presentation on character and responsible social media use. “Now is the time to increase student awareness of the potential pluses and minuses of having an online presence,” said Principal Patrick McGee. “We want kids to take advantage of the valuable connections social media can put at their fingertips. But we don’t want any of our students to make costly mistakes that might affect their futures.” At the center of the school’s orientation was guest speaker Scott Fitch, a respected expert on social media and cyberbullying as well as the varisty basketball coach at Fairport High School. His message, “Pause before you post” serves as a strong warning to young people who often do not consider the consequences of their actions on Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and other social media platforms.
Fitch challenged his young audience to share their unedited posts with him and with their parents. He asked them if they would feel comfortable doing that: if they were proud of how their posts represented them. He reminded students that nothing is ever private online. Fitch told of experiences his own students had, of being turned down for valuable scholarships or job opportunities because decision-makers had looked them up online and felt they did not represent the values of the organization. Even top high school athletes have missed college recruitment opportunities because of a single ill-advised post, discriminatory statement, or cyberbullying activities. Students gave positive feedback and many parents told McGee they felt the message was something every student at the school would benefit from hearing. The Byron-Bergen Central School District’s emphasis on educating the whole student earned it the designation of New York District of Character from Character.org for 2015-2018. BBCSD’s districtwide framework for character education teaches students about leadership, ethics, decision-making and respect. Provided information

St. Paul’s Vacation Bible School supports Hilton-Parma Emergency Food Shelf There were so many reasons for excitement at St. Paul Lutheran’s Vacation Bible School, August 1 through 5. Water fun, wagon rides and 175 campers having a blast - a recipe for a fun-filled week. However, the lasting excitement came in the form of many boxes of food brought in by the children each day to help replenish Hilton’s Food Cupboard. Nancy Getbehead, VBS director, said the community service component is at the heart of the VBS program. “We spend all week talking about Jesus’ love and what it means,” Getbehead said. “However, it sticks so much more when the children are actually engaged in sharing that love with others. It is always a blessing to have so many campers spend the week with us, and it is extra special when they work together to bless our community.” In addition to its school ministry for preschool through eighth grade, St. Paul operates a VBS and a weekly Sunday School program that are open to the community.
