A day of fun and cooling off at Ogden Spray Park
It was the perfect day to spend at the Spray Park in Pineway Ponds in Ogden, on Monday, July 13. About 200 people couldn’t agree more, as they ran, screamed, laughed, and got wet and cool on the sunny, high 80’s day. Many of the children used plastic buckets, bottles and cups to throw water on their friends and attendees, amidst a number of water-spraying towers and concrete animals. Mumford resident, Noah Khiosida, finds the sea lion spray quite fascinating (top left). Greece residents, Linda Hooker and daughter Ashlyn, walk through the rainbow spray together (top right). Ethan Yates of Chili eagerly awaits enduring a cascade of cooling water (bottom right). A group of water enthusiasts gather aound a spouting whale (bottom left). This year’s Spencerport Canal Days celebrates its 34th year with new and old festival favorites. The party starts Friday night with the band Shine playing on the Union St. stage at 7 p.m. Other entertainers on tap for the weekend include WARM 101.3 Tony Infantino’s band, Keys to the Caddy, along with 8-days-a-Week and The Coupe D’Villes. This is the second year for the Wine Tasting Tent, which has been expanded to include six New York wineries. The tent will be located in the Firemen’s Field adjacent to the new Farmer’s Market area and will be open both days from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This is the 25th year for the Canal Days Car Show, a popular event that draws close to 300 cars that have dated from 1919 to the present. The show takes place on Saturday at the Ferris Goodridge American Legion Post 330 at 691 Trimmer Rd., rain or shine with registration from 9 a.m. to noon. Registration is $15 per car. A shuttle bus picks up and drops off from Terry Taylor Elementary School. Food trucks will line up along the entrance to the Firemen’s Field and will be offering everything from custom grilled cheese sandwiches to gourmet macaroni and cheese. That doesn’t mean that festival favorites like Kettle Korn and fresh squeezed lemonade won’t be available. The food trucks just add even more variety to the smorgasbord of flavors available at the festival. Several
community service organizations also offer favorite fare with proceeds being used to support area projects. One of the events that makes Spencerport Canal Days unique is the Canaligator Race. Where else can you see 1,000 rubber alligators launched off a bridge into the Erie Canal? This year’s Canaligator Race is the culminating event and will take place on Sunday, July 26 at 4:30 p.m. at the Erie Canal bridge on Union Street. Tickets are $5 each or five for $20 and available for purchase at the Information Booths on the festival site. This year’s prizes are worth hundreds of dollars and awarded to the first five and last five gators to cross the finish line. And, shoppers will delight in visiting the over 40 crafters set up at the Firemen’s Field and numerous sidewalk sales along South Union St. Festival-goers can make their visit easy by parking their vehicle and taking the bus. Shuttle buses will be picking up and dropping off at Terry Taylor Elementary School, 399 Ogden Parma Townline Rd., and Spencerport High School, 2707 Spencerport Rd. The festival runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 25 and Sunday, July 26. Find out more in a special section delivered with this newspaper. by Grace Griffee for the Canal Days Committee

Proposal for self-service storage facility in Ogden withdrawn by Kristina Gabalski Christopher Wilcox has withdrawn his application to the Town of Ogden regarding construction of a self-service storage facility between Routes 31 and 531 near Washington Street. Wilcox notified the town about his decision Thursday, July 9. The Ogden Planning Board was in the process of completing an EAF (Environmental Assessment Form) on the project when the application was withdrawn. Ogden Supervisor Gay Lenhard said the Town Board was waiting for the EAF before making a decision regarding the re-zoning of the 12.5 acre parcel from residential to a self-service storage overlay district. Wilcox told the Suburban News/The Herald the most significant reason he decided to withdraw the application was because of finances. “It was determined that the development was going to cost more than anticipated,” he said, and explained those costs included the size of the proposed development - 16 storage buildings with approximately 30 units per building, and two smaller buildings with approximately 35 units each - as well as his hope to assist owner-occupied houses next to the property and also satisfy renters. Wilcox said he planned to create a drainage system to assist homeowners in the neighborhood and additionally wanted to plant evergreens along the property line to create a year-round aesthetic view. “After receiving word from my engineer last week of the anticipated costs, I decided to withdraw my application,” he said. He added that he is not sure what is next for the property.
Members of the 31 West Neighborhood Association strongly opposed the re-zoning during a public hearing held by the Ogden Town Board May 13. Duane Gaul, a leader of the Association, said his group is pleased that Wilcox withdrew his application, “But he did the same thing in 2011 - withdrew his application after we opposed it. Mr. Wilcox can wait and reapply later for another re-zoning attempt,” Gaul said. Following the 2011 withdrawal, the Town of Ogden passed a local law in 2014, which created the self-service storage overlay district. The 31 West Neighborhood Association opposed the law because, “We continue to believe that self-storage businesses do not belong in residential neighborhoods,” Gaul said, and indicated members plan to ask the Town Board to amend the law so that it does not allow self-service storage facilities in residential districts. “We believe that allowing self-service storage facilities in light industrial districts and commercial districts is sufficient,” he said. Gaul noted that the group is pleased to see the construction of North Coast Personal Storage on South Union Street in the Commercial Heritage District. “It is an area where the Comprehensive Town Plan says they can be located,” Gaul explained. He added that testimony given during the May 13 public hearing via cell phone by Lt. Colonel Daniel Fletcher, who lives in the 31 West neighborhood and is deployed in Afghanistan, “may have had an effect on the Town Board’s feelings about Highway View Self-Storage.”

Strengthening tips to aid flexibility (StatePoint) If you work out a couple times a week, you are on the right path to good health. But experts say this can and should be just the beginning of your fitness journey. “Our bodies are designed to be fast, powerful and agile,” says Paul “Coach” Wade, fitness expert and author of the new book “Explosive Calisthenics.” “However, modern Americans have become the slowest, least agile members of our species in all history.” Wade says a vanishing percent of people even attempt to unlock their body’s full
athletic potential. To help, he is offering tips to take your overall fitness to the next level. Ditch the excuses Getting in great shape requires consistency, and it’s all too easy to make excuses for missing a workout. Whether you’re always on the road or can’t afford to renew your gym membership, Wade says such excuses don’t hold water. “While modern training methods involve equipment like barbells, balls, boxes and gymnastics gear, the superior way of

building maximum speed, power and ability is the old-school method of using just your body’s own weight, nothing else,” he says. Whether you’re crunched for time or crunched for space, don’t let these circumstances prevent you from getting a great workout. Pushups, squats, leg raises, bridges and jumps are just a few fundamental exercises that can be performed in a small space without any gear. Ditch the fear Traditional calisthenic moves used by gymnasts, martial artists, athletes and tumblers - such as flips and kip-ups - may seem intimidating. But Wade says that
most people have the inherent ability to master such moves by working on each one in progressions. “Movements like these have been handed down from generation to generation,” he says. “They should not be the exclusive domain of gymnasts.” Stay focused Don’t try to take shortcuts. Successful athletes don’t leap ahead and tackle moves they aren’t ready for - they find ways to make the stuff they can already do work even better for them. Foodlink launches expanded curbside market summer season Dedicated to improving access to healthy and affordable foods in low income areas, Foodlink launched the third season of its popular Curbside Market. Curbside Market is a farmer’s market on wheels, traveling to places where people live and gather to sell local produce at wholesale cost. This year, there are more stops, extended hours, and additional areas being served. Curbside Market is one of Foodlink’s food access programs which aim to increase access to nutritious foods in underserved communities. The food bank sources most product from local farmers. Foodlink also participates in the state’s FreshConnect
program, which provides $2 bonuses to customers who spend $5 in SNAP benefits (formerly food stamps) on local foods. Since its debut in 2013, Curbside has grown from one truck to two, has increased the amount of local produce sold by nearly 200 percent and has more than doubled customer visits. “We believe that everyone has the right to fresh, healthy, and affordable foods. For those with limited mobility and tight budgets, eating healthy can be a huge challenge,” said Mitch Gruber, Director of Programs and Innovation at Foodlink. “The Curbside Market is an effective way to
connect local farms and underserved communities throughout our region.” The two trucks are on the road Monday through Friday with stops in Monroe, Ontario, Wayne, Genesee, Orleans, and Livingston counties. There will be additional nutrition education workshops this year to teach and empower customers with great recipe ideas. Besides produce, Curbside Market is also equipped with essential protein like eggs and nuts. Curbside Market summer schedule con-

19th Annual Brockport Duck Derby August 9 Every year since 1997, the final event at the Brockport Arts Festival is the annual Duck Derby. The 2015 event marks its 19th year. Thousands of plastic ducks will be dumped off the Main Street canal bridge and race towards the Park Avenue bridge and historic Harvester Park. The community and festival attendees will be cheering on the ducks. The first six and last six ducks that cross the finish line are prize winners. The Duck Derby continues to be the most popular single event during the Brockport Arts Festival. The event is also the largest fundraiser for the Arts Festival and allows BISCO to fund various youth and community projects throughout the year. In the last 20 years, BISCO has supported over $250,000 projects including the Brockport Toy Shelf, various playgrounds, Sweden Town Park (skate park and baseball field), Brockport Fire Department equipment, Cool Kids program, Brockport Eagles football program, Seymour Library, Walk/Bike Brockport, and Lakeside Hospital. This year’s Duck Derby proceeds will benefit additional projects to be identified later. This year’s Duck Derby prizes are the largest ever offered in the 19 year history of the event, including: First and last prizes - $1000 Gift Cards (Wegmans) Second and second from last - $500 Debit Card (Drs. Thaney & Bowdler), $500 prize ($300 Five Star Bank Debit Card and $200 gas card) Third and third from last - $400 Gas Grill from Lowes, $400 Gas Cards from Brockport Lions and Brockport Rotary Fourth and fourth from last - $250 Gift Cards (Wegmans) Fifth and fifth from last - $200 Desktop Computer and $200 32” Flat Screen TV (Sunnking) Sixth and sixth from last - $150 Semester SERC Memberships at The College at Brockport In addition, nominal prizes from local merchants will be awarded in a random drawing during the time between the sixth and sixth from last ducks crossing the finish line. Nominal prizes value between $25 and $100, and winners will not be eliminated from winning the higher-value Duck Derby prizes. Local merchants wishing to support BISCO and the Duck Derby can send their gift certificates or other nominal prizes to: BISCO - Duck Derby, PO Box 197, Brockport, NY 14420-0197. Your home has been listed for just a few days, and your Realtor calls with great news. The people who looked at the house last night have come in for an offer to buy it! When the agents arrive to present the offer, you are excited and nervous. As they explain the price and terms, however, you feel that the price is a little too low and that the offer contains some terms that will be either expensive or inconvenient for you to meet. Should you try to work it out or wait for something better? Work it out! Often the first offer to come in is the best one. When a house is fresh on the market, there is usually a rush of activity and the buyers who see it during the first few days are those most likely to be the most interested. If you are fortunate enough to get an offer right away, you will probably be better off in the long run if you accept it or try to work out a compromise. For professional real estate advice, give me a call, Mary Lobene at 352-8529.

OPENING A NEW BUSINESS?
Hannah VanDuzee (third from left) with other members of her YWAM group in Kathmandu in front of a house where the group did fellowship with Nepali Christians. Provided photo.
Brockport HS grad returns from mission work in Nepal by Kristina Gabalski It’s been more than two months since 19-year old Hannah VanDuzee, a Brockport High School graduate, experienced first-hand the devastating earthquake that hit Nepal on April 25. Her mother, Marilyn, says Hannah returned home to Western New York in midMay and is doing well. “She looked really wonderful,” Marilyn says, recalling how Hannah appeared when Marilyn and her husband, Matt, picked up their daughter in Maine. Hannah traveled to Nepal early this past spring as a team member of Youth With A Mission (YWAM). She was in Pokhara when the earthquake hit. The area is rural, but a village to which Hannah’s group had traveled was completely destroyed. Following the earthquake, Hannah’s group assisted victims any way they could.
“She has matured so much,” Marilyn says of her daughter, following the experience. “She is so appreciative of everything she has and of all we do for her. She tells us she has grown so much from the experience and learned more about herself and who she is.” The experience has also had an impact on the entire VanDuzee family. “I know I would definitely love to do a mission trip to Nepal,” Marilyn says, and adds she has an older daughter who feels the same. Such a trip would be down the road, but Hannah’s experience “provided encouragement for all of us,” Marilyn says. She says it is likely more mission work is also in the future for Hannah, but right now she will focus on her college education. Hannah plans to attend Roberts Wesleyan College in the fall and will prepare for a career in photo journalism.

The Hamlin Public Library is holding life-changing programs this summer as part of its Summer Reading Program. The nation-wide summer reading theme this year is “Every Hero Has a Story.” While it is easy to plan around the superhero theme, the library is specifically focusing on community heroes and several of its programs give participants of all ages opportunities to be heroes. The “Be a Hometown Hero” program continues to run until August 12. There will be an ongoing food drive for Life Solutions of Hamlin. The primary goal of Life Solutions is “to respond to our neighbors needing food assistance.” The library and Life Solutions are literally next-door neighbors on Lake Road and both are very excited to give its patrons the chance to be Hometown Heroes and provide assistance to local families. On Tuesday, August 11 at 1 p.m. the library will be hosting a Pantene Beautiful Lengths Ponytail Drive. Created by Pantene in partnership with HairUWear® and the American Cancer Society®, this charity campaign encourages Americans to grow, cut and donate their healthy hair to create wigs for women who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment. Local stylists from Hair NV in Hamlin, Shear Emotion in Hilton and Georgie’s Tool & Dye in Hilton will be at the event to cut the ponytails and give our hometown heroes a fresh, new style. Appointments may be made ahead of time with these local salons for ponytail donation and a free haircut. Community members, especially those

The library’s own Cheryl Ingham, well-known for her ankle length braid, has signed up to be our first Hometown Hero.
