Signs of Emerald Ash Borer damage.

Emerald Ash Borer threatens trees in Brockport A presentation on the Emerald Ash Borer and the damage it can cause ash trees in Brockport was given at the August 7 meeting of the Brockport Village Board by Noreen Riordan, EAB larva. Certified Arborist and member of the Monroe County Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) Task Force. EAB is a highly destructive beetle who lays its eggs under the bark of Ash trees. The eggs hatch into larvae that burrow into the tree destroying its vascular tissues, and ultimately killing the tree. Tree mortality begins six to seven years following initial infestation. It is likely that Brockport’s trees have been infested for a while, given diseased trees found both in the village and at the college. Deceased trees ultimately fall, putting people, pets, homes and other property at risk of significant damage. If caught early, the infestation may be halted or prevented by the use of stem injectable insecticides administered by a trained arborist. Treatments must occur during the growing season. The current window is estimated to close mid-September. If anyone has Ash trees growing in their yard, one may wish to consult with an arborist soon before the trees are too infested to be saved. Provided information and photos Emerald Ash Borer.

Members of Patriot Guard Riders of New York, Inc., (PGRNY) have become a familiar site standing in flag lines at funerals and dignified transfers (at the family’s request) in honor and respect of service members, veterans, and their families, as well as for the state’s first responders who have been killed in the line of duty, but PGRNY has also developed a very active Help on the Homefront (HOTH) Veteran’s Assistance program. Donna Barnes, website and communications operations director for PGRNY, says HOTH is a volunteer outreach program which provides assistance to veterans in crisis, experiencing a particular hardship, or who have unmet needs due to a service-related disability. “This assistance is also available to Gold Star and Blue Star families who are experiencing hardships due to the loss or deployment of their loved one,” Barnes says. All cases are reviewed individually and are based on merit, PGRNY says. Through the process of providing Help on the Homefront assistance, Barnes explains that PGRNY volunteers in the Rochester area realized that all some veterans needed for a fresh start was furniture for a new place of residence. “Unfortunately, most of those veterans did not qualify for assistance through the HOTH program as their hardship was not the result of a service-related disability,” Barnes says. PGRNY volunteers decided to address this need and secured a warehouse and the use of moving trucks. They asked the community for donations of gently-used furniture and began delivering it to veterans in need. The HOTH-ROC Warehouse became a program of PGRNY HOTH in November of 2015 and is only available in the Rochester area at this time. “The ROC-HOTH Warehouse program is growing by leaps and bounds,” Barnes says. “On July 8, 2017, the

Photo by Kristina Gabalski. ROC Warehouse team delivered furniture to Michael Cook - the 100th Veteran served since the program was formalized. PGRNY explains that veterans in need of furniture fill out a request form and supply information necessary for the vetting process. If they qualify, veterans come to the warehouse to select furniture. They can take it home or have it delivered. Agencies in the Rochester area are available to assist veterans in filling out the forms and in visiting the warehouse. Donations are welcome and community members wishing to donate their gently-used furniture can schedule a time to deliver it directly to the warehouse or have it picked up. Donation pickup request forms are available on the PGRNY website (pgrny.org) or by calling 585-8661PGR (585-866-1747). Barnes says more information is available on the website regarding donations and the types of furniture currently being accepted. Recent items of need include couches, chairs, chests of drawers, end tables, small TVs (less than five years old, digital), small TV stands, recliners, bed frames (no mattresses or box springs), pots and pans. Additional guidelines regarding donations are available on the website. “At this time, we are only able to pick up and deliver furniture once a month, specifically the second Saturday of the month,” she says. New volunteers and members are always welcome, PGRNY says. “You are encouraged to visit our website and consider joining us in standing for and assisting those who stood for us,” Barnes says.

Rotary’s Fly-In Pancake Breakfast August 20 The Spencerport Rotary Club, with help from EAA Chapter 44, are sponsoring a Fly-In Pancake Breakfast Sunday, August 20 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at Ledgedale Airpark, Eisenhauer Drive, Brockport, off Sweden Walker Road, one road north of Colby Street. See the Whiskey 7 aircraft that led the second wave of the invasion of D-Day. The C-47 Dakota also served with the 12th Air Force in the Mediterranean Theater, the 9th Air Force in England, and transported paratroopers for the 82nd Airborne Division - withstanding flak throughout all her missions. Whiskey 7 is painted and rigged for dropping paratroopers just like she was in June 1944. The plane was restored by the National Warplane Museum in Geneseo. Rides on the historic aircraft will also be available. Numerous aircraft, Brockport Fire Department trucks, Monroe County Sheriff ’s Department Mounted Unit, Civil Air Patrol and Antique Tractors from WNY Two Cylinder Club will be on display. The pancake breakfast is available for adults $8.50, kids 5 to 12 $3.50, kids 4 and under free. Proceeds benefit Camp Haccamo, which provides a free camping experience for disabled adults and children, and other Rotary projects.

Commemorate the eclipse with a special postmark offered at Rochester Museum of Science The Rochester Museum of Science is hosting an eclipse viewing experience at Strasenburgh Planetarium on Monday, August 21 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The museum is located at 657 East Avenue, Rochester. On August 21, the northern hemisphere will be able to view an eclipse of the sun as it tracks a shadow diagonally across the United States. To commemorate the event, the U.S. Postal Service printed a stamp using thermochromic ink to commemorate the eclipse. Using the body heat of your thumb or fingers and rubbing the eclipse image will reveal an underlying image of the moon. The image reverts back to the eclipse once it cools. The stamp was released on June 20. In conjunction with the Rochester Museum of Science eclipse viewing experience on August 21, the Postal Service will be selling the Total Eclipse of the Sun Forever stamp and offering a pictorial postmark from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Pictorial postmarks are collectors’ items, making excellent souvenirs of special dates and events. Only items bearing uncanceled postage stamps at the applicable First-Class Mail rate are eligible for postmarking. Collectors and out of town requests can be mailed in, with a self-addressed stamped return envelope, for 30 days to: Eclipse Stamp Station, Rochester Post Office, 1335 Jefferson Rd, Rochester, NY 14692-9998. Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary

Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary (Never Known to Fail) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin assist me in my necessity, Oh, star of the sea, help me and show me here you are my mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my Heart, to succor me in my necessity. (Make request). There are none that can withstand your power. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to Thee. (3 Times). Holy Mother, I place this prayer in your hands (3 times). Say this prayer for three consecutive days and then you must publish it, and it will be granted to you. Gratefully, J.P.

Law Enforcement Recogniton Day held in conjunction with Town of Greece Summer Concert Finale Law Enforcement Recognition Day is a community event aimed at strengthening the relationship between residents and law enforcement officials, and helps to increase awareness to the different methods residents can utilize to ensure the community is kept safe. This year’s Law Enforcement Recognition Day, held Sunday, August 13 at the Greece Town Hall Campus, featured several law enforcement/safety vendors, including STOP-DWI, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), Willow Domestic Violence, and Victim Assistance. There were also law enforcement vehicles and equipment on display, and the Mounted Unit paid a visit to the event as well. The NCMEC provided

18 families with Child ID’s from their free Child ID Booth. The Town of Greece Summer Concert Series came to an end that day with the last featured band of the summer: 90 West Band. Their music, which has been entertaining Western New York and the surrounding areas for 17 years, featured an array of country tunes from current artists to country classics. The crowd had fun singing and dancing along to the wellknown tunes. In keeping with the country theme, Forest Hill Catering sold chicken BBQ meals. Proceeds from these meals were donated directly to the Greece Police Athletic League (GPAL), which is an organization that aims to bring the community and the police department together by engaging police officers and youth in sports. The program, which is free of charge and remains the only completely free Police Athletic League (PAL) program within New York State, is intended to be more than simply learning about or playing a sport; it is about building good relationships with police officers in a positive environment and promoting healthy youth activities. Oak Orchard Health, UR Medicine announce collaboration agreement Patients of Oak Orchard Health clinics in four Upstate New York counties could soon gain access to more UR Medicine specialists and services under terms of a collaboration agreement announced recently. Oak Orchard provides primary, dental and vision care for more than 21,000 adults and children in rural areas and small communities across Western New York and the Finger Lakes. It started in 1966 as a small health project serving migrant workers and has grown into an integrated, federally funded health center with locations in Albion and Lyndonville, Orleans County; Brockport, Monroe County; Hornell, Steuben County; and Warsaw, Wyoming County. Oak Orchard Health has worked closely with UR Medicine physicians and hospitals for a number of years. The new agreement formalizes their institutional collaboration, and is expected to make it easier for Oak Orchard’s adult and pediatric patients to receive care from UR Medicine professionals—including telemedicine consultations for specialty care services such as behavioral and mental health. “As we look to reduce barriers and address other critical gaps in rural health care, collaborations such as this make good sense,” said James J. Cummings, chief executive officer of Oak Orchard Health. “This is not just great news for our patients; it is great news for our communities at large, especially during this time of concern and uncertainty

regarding health care. This relationship enhances the high quality primary care, dental care and vision services for which Oak Orchard has become known.” Mark B. Taubman, M.D., CEO of the University of Rochester Medical Center and UR Medicine, said the Oak Orchard agreement supports URMC’s strategy for increasing access to high-quality UR Medicine care for families across Upstate New York. Along with Strong Memorial and Highland hospitals in Monroe County, URMC’s affiliates include F.F. Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua, Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville, and Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville. UR Medicine professionals also provide care to patients at the Strong West medical campus in Brockport, St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell and Wyoming County Community Hospital in Warsaw. “UR Medicine has outstanding providers in a full range of specialties,” Taubman said. “The goal of our regional strategy is to make these services as accessible as possible to patients throughout the region. We have great regard for the Oak Orchard Health organization and look forward to expanding the range of services available to Oak Orchard patients as part of this agreement.” Oak Orchard Health will continue to maintain previously established relationships with other area health care providers and social service agencies. The Brockport High School Class of 1972 held it’s 45th reunion on August 12, at the Brockport Elks Club. A moment of silence was observed for deceased classmates. A round of applause and a thank you went to those classmates that served our country in the military. Congratulations went out to two pair of newlyweds: Brenda Bigley and her husband Vance (Vestal); and Gregg Rosenberg and his bride Marcia. The class formally “adopted” Fred Klauser (husband of classmate Tina Coapman Klauser), because he’s been to more reunions than some original members of the class. The Reunion Committee Chairperson, Ellen Leisten Sorce, received the Community Service Award for her work with several charities and worthwhile causes around Brockport and through her office in downtown Rochester. Members of Brockport High School’s Class of 1972 are shown at their 45th reunion on August 12. Provided information and photo.

Roberts Wesleyan launches Corporate Partnership program

A rendering of the future Sweden Park Lodge. Provided by the Town of Sweden.

Bids awarded for Sweden Town Park lodge project by Kristina Gabalski Construction could begin soon on the Sweden Park Lodge. Sweden Town Council members awarded bids for the project during a special meeting at the Sweden Town Hall, August 15. “This has been a long, long time coming,” Supervisor Rob Carges said. “I’m very excited to see it happen.” The Sweden Park Lodge will be located next to Kepler ’s pond, about midway through the park. According to the town, the 2,600 square foot lodge will include a fireplace, kitchen and restrooms and will be available to rent year-round by residents, community groups, businesses and service organizations. Additionally, the Sweden/Clarkson Recreation Department will be able to use the lodge as a site for programming. The general contracting bid was awarded to Whitney East of Rochester for $441,481; the plumbing contracting bid was awarded

to E-Plumbing & Piping, Inc. of Hilton for $32,700; the mechanical contracting bid was awarded to Wyco Mechanical of Brockport for $33,793; and the electrical contracting bid was awarded to HewittYoung Electric of Rochester for $38,276. Town officials and contractors planned a meeting at the site Wednesday, August 16, to begin discussing details and timetables for the project. Supervisor Carges noted the town received a New York State Regional Economic Development Council grant of $446,145 for the project two years ago. The grant was secured by a partnership between the town and the Sweden Community Recreation Foundation. “The grant will cover 75 percent of the cost of the project,” Carges said. Additionally, the town has received $75,000 in SAM grant funding from NY State Senator Robert Ortt, which will, “offset more of the cost,” Supervisor Carges said, “it’s very encouraging.”

Slaughter announces $770,000 in grant funding for UR Medical Center Award will fund efforts to prevent radition damage for cancer patients Congresswoman Louise Slaughter (NY-25) has announced a $770,000 grant for the University of Rochester Medical Center from the Department of Health and Human Services. The award will be used to research and develop drugs that would prevent radiation damage to the salivary glands for throat and neck cancer patients. “This major federal award is yet another example of the important research happening right here in our community. Rochester is helping lead the world in some of the most groundbreaking medical breakthroughs. Dr. Benoit’s research will help carry that legacy while also playing a big

role in helping the hundreds of thousands of people diagnosed with throat and neck cancer every year,” said Slaughter. Severe loss of salivary gland function is an outcome of radiation therapy for more than 550,000 patients annually diagnosed with throat and neck cancers worldwide. The funding will be used to research and develop a drug that would prevent radiation damage and mitigate the effects of the cancer treatment. The project is led by Dr. Danielle Benoit, Principle Investigator at the University of Rochester Medical Center’s Benoit Lab. Provided information

Charlotte Pier a Hotspot for Shore Anglers by T.R. Hendrick So far all of the great places to fish here in Upstate New York I’ve written about require a boat to have success. I am sure there were plenty of anglers out there that don’t own said boat but still love to fish and it’s time I did right by ya’ll. I know of a small group of dedicated anglers that fish exclusively from shore and do very well, but most are very secretive. One of the best shore fishermen in the Rochester area is Doug Smith. Doug catches a wide variety of fish just about nine months of the year, all from the shore. I recently caught up with Doug down at Lake Shore Country Club where he works and asked him if he would give up a shore fishing hot spot for my column. He thought for a minute and said, “Get back to me next week and I will put something together for you.” The following week I did just that and Doug, true to his word, put together a detailed breakdown of his favorite spot, the Charlotte Pier. It looked so good that all I had left to do was reduce it a bit to fit in this column. Here is how it read: Shore fishermen – try the Charlotte Pier at the end of Lake Avenue in Rochester. It is easily accessible with ample parking and offers over a half mile of access to both the Genesee River and Lake Ontario. You don’t have to be an expert to fish the Charlotte Pier; all skill levels can be employed to find some of the many species of fish that inhabit the water surrounding the pier. Casting lures, bottom fishing and bobber fishing (when the water is calm) can all produce results depending on what you’re fishing for. If you’re fishing off the bottom, make sure your baited hook is at least 2 feet above your ½ oz.– ¾ oz. weight. Otherwise you may be a prime target for the dreaded Round Goby, an invasive species that should not be returned to the water alive. Many people, some from foreign countries, walk the pier so be prepared to answer questions about the kind of fish you’re catching and what you do with your catch. Many folks don’t realize how many species inhabit the waters around the pier, I’m sometimes surprised myself with some of my catches. Once I landed an American eel (river side), my first ever, and not a very welcome sight. A lady visiting from the Netherlands happened by and commented on my wonderful catch, a favorite meal where she came from! At different times of the year, usually early spring and late fall, you can target open water game fish such as brown trout, rainbow (steelhead) trout, coho salmon and chinook (king salmon). The kings can be especially good off the pier in late August through September with many anglers casting glow spoons after dark. Try glow-in-thedark lures activated with a UV flashlight. Don’t forget to bring a large net with a long, sturdy handle. You won’t be able to retrieve your catch by just lifting it out with your fishing pole. In the early spring, I like to target brown trout, which are very active in the shallow water on the beach side of the pier. My favorite lure is the ¼ oz. nickel/gold E.P. Spinner Thomas Spinning Lure. It works great for trout, salmon, bass, walleye and panfish. Another go-to lure is the C.P. Swing (no. 5 silver or brass), which seems to work well from spring through fall. I sometimes use a technique called “poor man’s trolling” by walking my lure up and down the pier walls. I’m often surprised when I get a hit, set the hooks and reel in a variety of fish including northern pike, smallmouth bass, rock bass, white bass, drum (sheepshead), and white perch. The pier offers great rock structures for smallmouth bass fishing. Soft plastic tubes (3”-4” green pumpkin or motor oil)

Doug Smith with a nice brown trout he caught on a silver and green Cleo off Charlotte Pier. Provided photo. are the best baits. Needless to say, bottom fishing from the pier on the river side can yield some real surprises. You can catch fish anywhere from the parking lot to the end of the pier. I use 1-oz. sinkers with No. 6 gold hooks spaced about 18 inches apart above my weight. I like to use large Niagara minnows that I net off the walls near the parking lot and nightcrawlers work well too. Be prepared to hook and retrieve some large fish, especially the Lake Sturgeon, which can run 3-5 foot long. This fish is an endangered species; avoid landing it if you can. Otherwise, return it immediately and carefully to the water. Some other big fish include carp and channel catfish. They can put up a significant fight so make sure you are using a sturdy rod with 10 lb. test or more line. Another strong fighter is the bowfin or dog fish, you’ll notice an eye spot on the tail for easy identification. All the fish in this group seemed to be especially active when river dredging was in progress. I’ve saved the best for last. Yellow perch fishing can be great from early May through June. When the perch leave the ponds and head back to the lake, large schools can occupy the lake side of the pier from about halfway to the end. Any perch fishing technique will work when they are hitting, but I prefer using soft plastics on a No. 6 jig head tipped with spikes. If the wave action is low, I like to float bobbers keeping my lure about two feet off the bottom. This technique works well around the submerged pilings (exact location is a local secret). Out near the end, I use a ½ to ¾ oz. pencil sinker with my soft plastic rigged about 2 feet up. Long casts with slow retrievals and occasional jigging can yield some large perch in the 12-inch-plus range. September and October are also good perch fishing months. On really good days it’s not unusual to catch your limit of 50 perch. Because the lake level has been so high this year, wind and wave action can close down access or create dangerous conditions. Across the river the Summerville Pier has been closed to access by the Coast Guard. When lake water levels drop to normal (246 feet or less), fishing the piers should return to normal and offer some great opportunities to catch many of the Lake Ontario fish species. I thanked Doug for doing my job better than I could. Smith then asked for my publisher’s contact information in case my boss needed more help with future outdoor columns. Unfortunately, my pup Rosalee ate it. Sorry Doug.

Clean The Outside As Well As The Inside

Broker Associate • Notary Public

Most homeowners realize the importance of keeping the inside of the house clean, but the exterior of the house is the first thing a prospective buyer notices. Annual cleaning also prolongs the life of exterior siding or masonry. Washing a house is not the enormous task you might imagine, but careful planning and preparation are essential. There are a number of tools, techniques and cleaning agents that can make the job easier. Wait for a warm, dry day when the wind is not blowing to tackle the job. First, protect the areas around the house with plastic sheeting. Set moveable objects away from the house and cover all vents, electrical outlets and outside light fixtures with duct tape and plastic. A careful inspection of the house should follow. Clean any areas with heavy stains (rust, organic or mildew stains or heavy deposits of grime) on masonry surfaces by hand to keep them from running when washed. Most stains can be removed with soap, water, and a scrub brush, Stubborn stains may require a stronger cleaning agent. Luckily, cleaners for almost every kind of stain are readily available. An ordinary garden hose and an automobile brush are usually sufficient for most jobs, but if the surfaces are heavily soiled, you can rent a pressure washer.
