Organ grinders at the NY Museum of Transportation on August 27

Visitors to the New York Museum of Transportation on Sunday, August 27, will delight to barrel organ music played by several “organ grinders” and their unique instruments. Enthusiasts of this early form of musical entertainment will be cranking out tunes from a variety of vintage wind instruments, bringing back the sights and sounds from more than a century ago.

Organ grinders were itinerant showmen who traveled through cities and towns, often with a pet monkey or other animal. On street corners and aboard trains and trolleys, they played their tunes for the coins donated by enthralled listeners, captivated by the unique sound of the barrel organs.

The New York Museum of Transportation will echo with these sounds while visitors get an up close experience, listening, watching and trying their hands at making the music themselves.

Trolley rides and the organ grinder gathering are included in the admission price of $10 for adults, $9 for seniors age 65 and up, and $6 for youths age three to 12. Admission is free for youths under age three. No reservations are needed.

The New York Museum of Transportation is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays and is located at 6393 East river road, just 20 minutes from downtown rochester and reached from Exit 11 off I-390. For information, call 533-1113 or visit http://www. nymtmuseum.org. provided information and photo

Moni, Gail and Esther (l-r) at the finish line in Albany after completing the Cycle the Erie Canal Bike Ride. Moni said, “This was awesome. All the water was awesome and I don’t mean the rain!” Gail added, “The NY hospitality was everything I hoped for and more. This was a beautiful experience.” Esther summed up the trip saying, “The Erie Canal ride was the best tour ever! Everyone who gave to make it happen helped to create unforgettable memories.” Photo by Karen Fien.

See Fantasia Rose at the Ogden Farmers’ Library on September 16.

On July 15, 2023, Brockport artist Miriam Zaffrann unveiled her handcarved, full size, jumper carousel horse, “Fantasia Rose,” during a private showing at the Sweden-Clarkson Community Center.

A dream fulfilled after a 25-year journey, Fantasia Rose has a flowing gold leaf peeka-boo mane and soulful, spirited eyes. The horse is lavishly adorned with Austrian Crystals and jewels and has a vintage, manual music box tucked away in her saddle back. The project came to life as a result of Miriam’s childhood wish to have a carousel horse.

Miriam was initially assisted on the project by her friend, Bruce Fernandez. He was a retired building inspector for the Town of Ogden, who found his true passion in his retirement years. He started Rochester Carousel Works and carved full size carousel animals and taught many people over the years how to carve their own carousel

animals. Bruce helped Miriam structure the head before his passing.

Through the years, Miriam was met with several hurdles and obstacles that kept her from completing the project. The death of her Arab Quarter Horse pony, Amber Di, devastated Miriam but fueled her to complete her dream.

An ardent supporter of rescuing horses, Miriam will be publicly auctioning Fantasia Rose in July 2024 with proceeds to be donated to horse rescues.

Fantasia Rose will make a public appearance on Saturday, September 16, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Ogden Farmers’ Library, 269 Ogden Center Road, Spencerport. All are welcome to stop by the free viewing to see her majestic beauty and detailed craftsmanship while enjoying a carousel presentation in honor of Bruce Fernandez. Provided information and photo

Among them was Tyler Pratt, from Churchville, who received an officer’s commission as a second lieutenant in the Military Police branch and will go on to serve with the 105th Military Police Company in Buffalo. Pratt received his new rank insignia during the pinning ceremony from his wife, Leanna.

Pratt enlisted directly into the New York Army National Guard Officer Candidate Program in August 2021. He is a Police Officer with the Town of Gates Police Department. Second Lieutenant Pratt received his first salute from Spc. Michael Shipma.

Officer Candidate School is a three-phase training course that lasts approximately 15 months to prepare officer candidates for the challenges and opportunities to lead Soldiers in the New York Army National Guard.

Training began for this year’s class in the spring of 2022 held both at Camp Smith, New York and Camp Niantic, Connecticut. Skills included physical fitness training, land navigation, road marches, warrior tasks and the fundamentals of leadership.

Candidates then continued into an 11-month phase two of regular drill training to provide a foundation

of Army leadership, military ethics, military justice, communication skills, military history and tactics. The final phase encompassed a two-week training session where candidates were evaluated in their leadership skills while conducting tactics in a field environment.

The Officer Candidate School is administered by the New York Army National Guard’s 1st Battalion, 106th Regional Training Institute and Camp Smith, New York, in conjunction with the Connecticut Army National Guard.

Wreaths Across America releases 2023 back-to-school curriculum

Wreaths Across America (WAA) has released new back-to-school curriculum as part of its year-round TEACH program. The free, downloadable, standards-based lesson plans include resources for all grade levels.

The K-12 curriculum includes new lesson plans for Constitution Day and lessons focused on the Navajo Code Talkers and Patriot Day. The free, downloadable plans ensure stories of service, sacrifice and valor are passed down to future generations while building good character and self-worth through service to others. Lesson plans and other educational resources are standards-based and created for teachers, parents and anyone educating young people.

Throughout the year, the WAA TEACH program provides educational opportunities for people nationwide to engage with veterans in their communities. Schools, school-related clubs, and other organizations can fundraise through the Group Sponsorship Program. In 2022 generous supporters made it possible for WAA to launch a K-12 curriculum aligned with the National Council on Social Studies and state Common Core standards. WAA

is also conducting its 2023 Youth Service Project, where young people are encouraged to execute a community service project. The service projects must be completed by Veterans Day, November 11, 2023.

“Teaching the next generation the value of freedom is an important component of our mission, as is fostering good character,” said Cindy Tatum, WAA TEACH Curriculum Developer and Gold Star Mother. “Whether they are a teacher with many years of experience or a first-year teacher, we appreciate the educators who work to inspire future generations of Americans to be the best version of themselves they can be. We hope this curriculum helps teachers plan their year and engage our most precious resource – our children!”

To learn more about the TEACH program and access free, downloadable lesson plans, visit www. wreathsacrossamerica.org/teach.

Free awareness seminar for parents

A seminar titled “Protecting and Parenting Our Children in Today’s Culture” will be held in Clarkson on Friday, August 25, at 6:30 p.m. Free and open to the public, the seminar is intended to help anyone that cares for a child address difficult topics such as parental and children’s rights with sexuality and gender identity issues.

The guest speaker is Bridgette Heap, an author and researcher who helps families be more cognizant of what children are being exposed to, sometimes even without a parent’s knowledge or permission, especially through the public-school system’s clubs, books, websites, and curriculum. The goal of the event is to inform parents and caregivers about the new policies that the New York State Department of Education has implemented that affect children’s and parents’ rights. Heap will also provide an overview of a Supreme Court case that affects parental rights. An open forum ‘Question and Answer’ session will be held at the end of the event.

This free event is from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Jubilee Church, 3565 Lake Road North in Clarkson, near Hafner Park. There will be free childcare provided. A drawstring backpack will be given to each child in the family that registers by August 21 and the child

does not have to be present to receive the backpack. Although the event is being held in a church, this is not a faith-based event. “There will be no preaching at this event. The purpose of this is to simply educate families about their rights.” said Pastor Emilio Sebastian. Pastor Emilio has received emails from teachers from a local school district expressing their concerns and sadness on the gender confusing curriculum that they are now being forced to teach to children as young as five years of age. “The bottom line is, we are holding this to help bring awareness to the community to help protect families,” said Pastor Emilio.

Social Security adds to its Compassionate Allowances list

Kilolo Kijakazi, Acting Commissioner of Social Security, has announced 12 new Compassionate Allowances conditions: 1p36 Deletion Syndrome, Anaplastic Ependymoma, Calciphylaxis, Cholangiocarcinoma, FOXG1 Syndrome, Leber Congenital Amaurosis, Metastatic Endometrial Adenocarcinoma, Paraneoplastic Cerebellar Degeneration, Pineoblastoma – Childhood, Primary Omental Cancer, Sarcomatoid Carcinoma of the Lung – Stages II-IV, and Trisomy 9.

The Compassionate Allowances program quickly identifies claims where the applicant’s medical condition or disease clearly meets Social Security’s statutory standard for disability. Due to the severe nature of many of these conditions, these claims are often allowed based on medical confirmation of the diagnosis alone. To date, nearly 900,000 people with severe disabilities have been approved through this accelerated, policy-compliant disability process, which now includes a total of 278 conditions.

“The Social Security Administration remains committed to reducing barriers and ensuring people who are eligible for benefits receive them,” said Acting Commissioner Kijakazi. “Our

Compassionate Allowances program allows us to reinforce that commitment by expediting the disability application process for people with the most severe disabilities.”

When a person applies for disability benefits, Social Security must obtain medical records in order to make an accurate determination. The agency incorporates leading technology to identify potential Compassionate Allowances cases and make quick decisions. Social Security’s Health IT brings the speed and efficiency of electronic medical records to the disability determination process. With electronic records transmission, Social Security can quickly obtain a claimant’s medical information, review it, and make a faster determination.

Dolores Mae “Dolly” Flow

December 28, 1928 – July 18, 2023

Dolores Mae Flow, formerly of Brockport, NY, passed away peacefully surrounded by song, prayers and the love of her devoted family on July 18, 2023. She was 94 years old. She was predeceased by her husband Vincent J. Flow, Sr and son Vincent J. Flow III.

Dolores is survived by her children, Susan Flow (Michael Livesay), Mary-Jo Ehrlich (Felix Ortiz), Timothy (Nancy), daughter-in-law Barbara Flow.

Dolores was blessed with the love of seven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and a lifetime of good friends.

Dolores was an amazingly sweet, kind, gracious and generous woman who was loved by everyone. She gave freely of herself to others, always with a big smile and a warm hug. She took care of her family like the most precious cargo on the planet and to her, all friends were family.

Dolores was born to Mary Cataldi and Flo Giraulo in Ebensburg, PA. She met her husband Vincent, when her father caught a ride home one day from a fellow worker’s son. The son, Vincent Flow, saw Dolly’s high school picture on the wall and immediately asked permission to date her. That glimpse was love at first sight that turned into marriage that lasted 70 years.

Dolly and Vince settled in Brockport and raised a family of four children and lots of pets. Dolly cherished her time in Brockport and was known for making the best chocolate cookies in town. She served as a member of the Brockport Junior Women’s League and host of the local Welcome Wagon where she helped to orientate new families to town. She was an active member of Nativity BVM Church and worked for Bob Bruce’s Insurance Company.

Upon retirement, Dolly and Vince became snowbirds traveling to Florida for the winter and spending summers on the Flow Family Garlic Farm in Kendall, NY living in their RV under the weeping willow trees.

Dolores enjoyed traveling, helping to process the garlic, taking long walks with the dogs, playing with the grandkids and visiting family and friends. When they eventually settled in Sarasota, joining their son Timmy and his family, they became active in the local Shriners where Dolly found great joy in serving as a Shriner Greeterette.

Dolly will be remembered for her kind nature, warm hugs, words of encouragement and her strong belief that prayers will help any situation and God’s will, will be done. She will be greatly missed. Her eternal memory will always evoke a reflection upon the kind, loving, sweet, supportive, accommodating quiet of her presence.

A memorial Catholic Mass will be held on Friday, August 25th at 10am at the Nativity of the BVM Church, 152 Main Street, Brockport, NY.

Get out & grow!

Growing potatoes

Growing potatoes can be a fun and nutritious experience for the whole family. According to Cornell University, potatoes are grown as an annual in areas that receive frost, as they are native to the Andes Mountains in South America. Cornell also says growing potatoes is easy – if you have the right location and soil.

Potatoes are grown from seed potatoes; tubers grown the previous season. They need well-drained soil, as they will rot if conditions are wet and cold. If you have heavy clay, consider growing potatoes in raised beds. You can also add organic material such as compost, cover crops or leaves to improve the soil for potato growing. Cornell warns against using manure or high nitrogen fertilizer as it will encourage lush foliage growth at the expense of tuber production.

Potatoes are a bit unique as they do best in slightly acidic soil – with a pH between 4.8 and 5.5. If your soil tends to be alkaline, now is the time to prepare for growing potatoes next year. Get a soil test and amend the soil in the fall so that it will be the correct pH come planting time next spring.

Disease-free seed potatoes can be found at garden centers or through online and catalog seed companies. If you save your own seed potatoes, make sure you get rid of any that show signs of disease. Potatoes from the supermarket should be avoided as they may have been treated with sprout inhibitors.

Cut your seed potatoes as little as possible. Tubers that are egg-size or smaller can be planted as is. Those larger than a chicken egg should be cut into pieces about one-inch across or slightly larger. Each piece should have one “eye,” a small bud from which the stem will grow. It can help to cure the cut seed potatoes before planting. Cornell suggests putting about five pounds of cut potatoes into a large grocery bag and folding the top closed. Keep at room temperature for

to three days before planting.

Plant about two to four weeks before the last frost date. Soil temperature should be around 50° F. Do not plant where you have grown potatoes, tomatoes, peppers or eggplant for the past two years. One way to plant is by digging a shallow trench about four inches deep with a hoe. Plant the seed potatoes about eight to 12 inches apart in the trench with their eyes up and cover with soil. Stems and foliage should emerge in two to four weeks.

When plants get to be about six to eight inches tall, “hill” up the potatoes by hoeing soil loosely around the base to within about one inch of the lower leaves. Repeat in about two to three weeks. The hilling process, which can be continued through the growing season to about a six- to eight-inch ridge, helps keep the potatoes from being exposed to sun, which turns them green and bitter.

Potatoes will need about one inch of water each week during the growing season. Cornell says row covers can help protect against Colorado potato beetles, leaf hoppers and flea beetles, which are the main pests of potatoes. You can crush the yellow eggs of Colorado potato beetles underneath the leaves and remove adults by hand to help control the population. As with tomatoes, potatoes can also get early and late blight. Cornell advises using certified seed, keeping foliage dry by watering early in the day and spacing plants apart for air circulation. Scab can also be a problem if the soil pH is too high.

Blight resistant varieties include Allegany, Elba, Rosa and Sebago. Scab resistant varieties include Chieftan, Norland, Russet Burbank, Russet Rural and Superior. You can spread out your harvest by planting early, mid-season and late varieties. You can also experiment with different skin and flesh colors and subtle flavors of different varieties.

Harvest carefully, using your hands as much as possible to protect from damaging the potatoes. Those that do

Hawley hosting Patriot Trip to D.C. for local veterans

Earlier this summer, Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C-Batavia) announced this year’s Patriot Trip to Washington, D.C., which will take place from September 21 to 24, where veterans and their families will get a tour of the nation’s capital and its numerous monuments and landmarks honoring those who served. This year’s trip will include stops at several notable locations in the D.C. area, including the WWII, Korean and Vietnam War memorials and Arlington National Cemetery.

“I am incredibly excited to host this event for another year,” said Hawley. “This trip is a great opportunity to honor our local veterans. We owe a deep level of gratitude for all they have sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy in this nation, so being able to

take them to our nation’s capital to see these historic landmarks every year is truly an honor.”

The deadline to register for this year’s Patriot Trip has once again been extended. Because the trip is for local veterans, the hotel is allowing additional time for sign-ups. Those interested in participating must register by Tuesday, August 29, at 3 p.m. This trip is open to all military veterans and their families. The cost will be between $450 and $500 per person and includes travel, accommodations, admissions, meals and some souvenirs. Those who are interested in participating in this event should contact Hawley’s office at 585-5895780 or email carneyj@nyassembly. gov for more details.

Travel scam warning

It has been a busy summer for travel, and that strong interest has also attracted criminals who are looking to take advantage of others. AAA strongly urges travelers to use reputable services for their travel needs, and to be on alert for potential scams.

Recently, a AAA travel advisor came across a scam targeting air travelers. The scam specifically targets people who search for an airline’s phone number online because their flight has been canceled or delayed. Those fake phone numbers lead callers to an unrelated, third party that will ask for reservation information and credit card numbers to pay for a “service fee” or price difference between flights. In some cases, those “fees” are hundreds of dollars. AAA wants members, and all travelers, to be

aware of these types of scams to avoid falling victim.

AAA Recommendations:

•If your flight is delayed or canceled, and you’re at the airport, speak with a gate agent in person or use the airline’s app.

•If you prefer to call the airline, use the toll-free number that appears on their website.

•An airline will not charge you for a canceled or delayed flight.

•Prior to a trip, download the airline’s app and save their toll-free number on your phone.

•To avoid these situations, work with a travel agent ahead of time and purchase travel insurance to cover incidental expenses like meals and lodging in the event of a cancelation. Provided information

New chapter for Spencerport football

Following a 3-4 regular season and a first-round loss to Churchville-Chili in the Section V Class A1 playoffs, Spencerport will start a new chapter of their football program with head coach Brian Hugelmaier replacing John Dowd.

But Hugelmaier is far from an unfamiliar face to the program. His, and many other parents were instrumental in bringing varsity football back to Spencerport in the mid-1990s.

“A group of dedicated parents that were involved with the Ogden Bears (youth program) got together and formed a committee in an effort to start a high school football program in Spencerport,” Hugelmaier said via email. “After many votes, football was finally a part of Spencerport in the mid-90s.

“My parents, along with many other dedicated parents were part of that. I can remember the struggle of getting the program started (many fundraising efforts, going door to door, etc.).”

Last season was a disappointment. The offense averaged almost 30 points per game but were also held to 12 points or fewer in four of the losses including the postseason.

“The players have been working extremely hard since I took over in January. I have been a coach in the

program for the last three years, so the relationships have been built with the players and we were able to hit the ground running in the off-season. Players and coaches have bought in, and we are ready to get to work on the first day of practice August 19.

“Our defense will look the same. Coach Burns will stay on as our Defensive Coordinator. He has been on the staff for the last 10+ years...(and) been a vital part of Spencerport’s recent success. Our offense will look a little different this year. Spencerport Football is known for its tough, hardnosed style of play and we want to keep that moving forward. Coach Dowd (previous coach) did a great job of developing a blue-collar attitude and I intend to keep it that way. Spencerport is a tough, hardworking, blue-collar community and the football program will reflect that.”

Five returning offensive linemen will help solidify things up front in seniors Tyran Hoyte (OL/LB), Kaden Armosino (OL/DL), Ayden Millan (OL/DL), Colton Burns (OL/DE) and Josh Winter (OL/DL). Fellow seniors Jahyleen Quick (RB/LB), Jack Vickers (RB/LB) and Anthony Hackett (WR/ DB) along with junior Miron Gurman (TE/DE) provide experience handling the ball.

“Changing the style of play on the field will take time. Development at

the younger levels will be key. Our varsity players have really committed to the off-season and sacrificed time over the summer to put extra time in. This hard work in the offseason will hopefully pay dividends on the field and make the transition a little smoother.”

The schedule-maker didn’t help the new head coach with any grace period as the Rangers will play 2022 sectional finalists Canandaigua and East High over the first three weeks of the season. Homecoming is Saturday, September 23, against Greece Athena.

“Needless to say, as a founding member of the program, I have a vested interest in Spencerport football. It will be my life’s work to ensure this program is successful.”

Scorse captures his third RDGA Senior Championship Title

Beginning the final round of the 2023 RDGA Wilson Fitch Senior Championship on Wednesday, August 9, at Canandaigua Country Club, defending champion Jim Scorse of Stafford Country Club found himself two shots out of the lead, facing three tough competitors with just 18 holes to play.

Turns out, Scorse, a Churchville resident, had his opponents just where he wanted them.

In typical Jim Scorse fashion, the five-time RDGA District Champion and RDGA Hall of Famer only got better as the final round wore on, while his opponents, one by one, all dropped out of contention as the Senior Championship drew to a close.

By the end of the day, Scorse captured the 2023 RDGA Wilson Fitch Senior Championship title by two shots over 2017 RDGA Senior Champion Stu Harris, claiming his second consecutive victory in the Championship – and third District Senior title in four years.

This year’s first-time host course for the RDGA Senior Championship – Canandaigua Country Club – proved to be something of a wild card, as many of the competitors had never played the private 9-hole facility until recently. This was underscored by the fact that there were many higher scores in Tuesday’s first round (coupled by rainy and gusty conditions) and that the course par of 71 was only bested twice during the entire Championship.

Michael Harris and Roland both struggled throughout the final round, never getting on track and never battling for the lead.

Other players, such as 1999 RDGA District Champion Carter Lucas and Doug Hallman of Mill Creek, made early runs to the top of the leaderboard, only to see their chances derailed by late bogies.

Meanwhile, Scorse was in the process of putting together the type of final round that he has become known for – the type of round that helped him capture multiple titles of all kinds over the past two decades.

After completing his first nine in even par, Harris bogied holes 10 and 11. Despite a birdie on the 13th hole, he added two more bogies – including one on the par-4 18th for the second consecutive day – and finished with scores of 70-74 for a 2-over-par 144 total for the Championship.

For Scorse, this was his third RDGA Wilson Fitch Senior title since reaching the eligible age to enter, 55, four years ago.

He adds this year’s championship to the five RDGA District Championships, nine RDGA Match Play titles, eight RDGA Mid Am titles and 15 RDGA Player of the Year awards in his RDGA Hall of Fame career.

While the first three age Divisions (Seniors, ages 55-59; Super Seniors, ages 60 to 64, and Masters, ages 65-69) were competing together from the Blue Tees, the Legends Division (ages 70 and up) was playing from the White Tees and competing for the first of the four Division titles.

In the Legends Division, defending champion Bob Zeman of Sodus Bay Heights was looking to become the first three-time winner in the Division. However, it was a first-time player in the age group – Steve Wade of Canandaigua – who used home knowledge of the host course to his advantage, finishing two shots ahead of Zeman with scores of 76-77 for a 153 total to win the 2023 RDGA Legends Senior Title.

In the other three Division races, Oak Hill’s Stu Harris won the Super Senior Division title with scores of 70-74 for a 144 total; like Wade in the Legends, Canandaigua’s Jim Johnson won the Masters Division title with the assistance of homecourse knowledge; and Scorse captured the Senior Division crown.

Hickory

Due to the fact that Canandaigua is a 9-hole layout (with two sets of tees to reflect “front” and “back” nines), the field was split into morning and afternoon waves both days. With the leaders teeing off last in the afternoon wave of the second round and Scorse in the next-to-last pairing, the 2023 District Senior title would not be decided until late in the day, as the sun set over the course on the eastern shores of Canandaigua Lake.

First round leader Stu Harris of Oak Hill was the first to tee off in the final pairing, along with Michael Harris of Morgan’s Crossing and Paul Roland of the Country Club of Rochester – both of whom began the day one shot behind the leader.

Scorse began the final round with a bogey – but soon righted the ship, scrambling for four consecutive pars. Two more bogies and one birdie later, and he still found himself amongst a pack of contenders following Harris. But – that’s when the old Scorse magic began to happen.

In his second nine of the final round, Scorse turned on the birdie machine, recording three over the last six holes – including the 18th, which had been playing tough throughout the Championship. Coming in with a 1-under-par 70 in Round 2 – only the second round under par of the Championship – Scorse finished the 36-hole Championship with scores of 72-71 for an even-par 142.

That left Harris – who recorded the only other round under par of the Championship (a first round 70) as the only player left to challenge Scorse. Unfortunately for Harris, he was going in the opposite direction.

Genesee Transportation Council to hold quarterly meeting August 24

The Genesee Transportation Council (GTC), the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for the Genesee-Finger Lakes Region, will hold one of its quarterly Board meetings on Thursday, August 24, at 8:30 a.m. at RGRTA, located at 1372 East Main Street in Rochester.

Each Board meeting is open to the public. A public forum is included at the beginning of the meeting to allow for public comment on meeting agenda items before the GTC Board takes action.

Observers are welcome to attend in person or will have the opportunity to watch and participate via a dedicated webpage, www.publicinput.com/GTCBoard. On this webpage, observers will be able to listen to and view a live feed of the meeting in any language. Individuals may also call in to listen to the audio

portion with a dedicated, toll-free phone number 855-925-2801 (Meeting code: 8998) and follow the prompts to record a voice message or speak in real-time during the public forum portion of the meeting. Observers will have the opportunity to submit questions and comments via chat, email to GTCBoard@PublicInput.com, or text B45313 to 855-925-2801.

The agenda and meeting materials are available at https:// www.gtcmpo.org/Meeting_Materials.

The United States Department of Transportation requires every metropolitan area with a population over 50,000 to have a designated MPO to qualify for receipt of federal highway and transit funds. GTC is the MPO for the nine-county region, which includes Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, Seneca, Wayne, Wyoming, and Yates counties.

The GTC Board consists of elected officials from the nine counties, the City of Rochester, and representatives of other local, regional, state and federal transportation-related agencies. The Board provides direction to the staff, establishes policy, and approves all activities and major work products, including the Long Range Transportation Plan, Unified Planning Work Program, and Transportation Improvement Program which detail how federal transportation funding is used in the greater Rochester planning area.

GTC will provide accommodations for anybody who wishes to participate in this meeting despite disability or proficiency in English. Contact GTC at 585-232-6240 or email to contactgtc@gtcmpo.org to arrange for services at least 48 hours prior to the meeting. Provided information

25th Annual Cycle the Erie Canal Bike Tour

The “Cycle the Erie Canal” bike tour is an eight day, 400 mile ride along the Erie Canalway Trail from Buffalo to Albany. An annual event, this year’s tour was held July 9-16, 2023. It is fully supported and organized by Parks & Trails New York (PTNY). Activities along the ride include shopping, theatre, museums, parks, historical landmarks, locally sourced food, wine and beer, all accessible from the trail.

This year was the 25th anniversary of the Cycle the Erie Canal tour, New York’s biggest multi-day bike tour. There were 750 cyclists from 40 states, Canada and around

experience the tour with them. Every year we’re not only welcoming upstate New Yorkers, we’re hosting folks from all over the United States and the world,” said Paul Steely White, Executive Director of Parks & Trails New York.

Each morning participating cyclists are given an itinerary for the day detailing points of interest, suggestions for breaks at historic sites, and recommendations for shopping and dining spots.

Cyclists experienced many welcoming community members from the towns and villages along the tour who are anxious to share the beauty and history of where they live. This year’s stops included many places where history was made, including:

•Lockport with the opportunity to take a boat ride through the “Flight of Five” locks.

•Western New York’s “-port” villages.

•Rochester with an opportunity to take an excursion along the Genesee Riverway Trail or a kayak ride in the Genesee River.

the Erie Canal Bike Ride. “Erie Canal was a civil engineering wonder and made the country’s fertile interior accessible to the adventurers in the early history of the U.S. Cycling the Erie Canal enables kids to see and experience the American spirit. Thanks to Parks & Trails New York for making end-to-end cycling with kids enjoyable and worry free.” – Prof. Wen Dong, University at Buffalo. “[Cycle the Erie Canal] is the best trip I have ever had!” – Riley Dong, 7 years old, first grader at Dodge Elementary School. Riders spent the eight nights of the tour camping in Buffalo, Medina, Fairport, Seneca Falls, Syracuse, Rome, Canajoharie, and Schenectady, before finishing at Corning Preserve in Albany.

“It’s more than just a tour. Like a magic loom, Cycle the Erie Canal weaves people and experiences together as they move through the landscape. We’ve seen grandparents riding with their grandkids. We’ve celebrated weddings of folks who have met

•Seneca Falls and a visit to the Women’s Rights National Historical Park.

•Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge

•The Erie Canal Museum with a concert, a blacksmith demonstration and food trucks

•Old Erie Canal State Park with stops at Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum and Canastota Canal Town Museum

•Glacial potholes of Moss Island and the Arkell Museum

•A ride along the Mohawk River to Waterford where the Erie Canal ends

•Peebles Island State Park and Albany’s Corning Preserve.

Spencerport resident Karen Fien volunteered with this year’s ride. She is shown here (l-r) in Albion, Port Byron, Camillus, an ice cream stop between Rome and Canajoharie, and at the finish line in Albany. Provided photos.

One Spencerport cyclist’s experience

Westside News staff photographer and Production Department manager, Karen Fien, participated in the Cycle the Erie Canal tour this year. Karen found out about the event when she had the opportunity to photograph the cyclists for a newspaper article last year when cyclists passed through Brockport. “I thought that it would be so much fun to participate, but wasn’t sure if I could do it,” she said.

Karen volunteered as a riding staff member with the tour. Riding volunteers work four days and ride four days, alternating riding and working days. Work days consisted of an assortment of jobs including assisting cyclists with day to day needs, preparing signs for the camp sites, staffing information booths and, in general, providing information and answering questions for the cyclists. “I really enjoyed working with, and meeting all of the cyclists. It was a well organized event, that made sure all of the cyclists’ needs were met. Everyone had a wonderful time; I didn’t hear any complaints from the people on the tour. It was so much fun meeting all of the people from all over the country, and the world. Everyone had a story, and everyone was so nice.”

On her riding days Karen encountered all of the same experiences as the full time cyclists. She said, “I learned so much about New York State. I didn’t realize that you could bike across the state following the Erie Canalway Trail. It was so impactful to experience the visuals along the way. The boats, the peaceful water, the different bridges, the wildflowers along the trail, and all of the history and historic sites that we visited. We are so fortunate to live in New York State, and

we have so many beautiful places to see and experience.”

Karen’s most memorable experience was the day the cyclists visited the Bryan M. Place Memorial Garden in Memphis, NY. The marker at the garden says, “Never To Be Forgotten.” The garden was started by Bryan’s mother in memory of her son who passed away in January of 2010 at the age of 39. Bryan was well known in the community as a financial expert, coach of youth sports, and athlete. Through the years, community

Crew.

members have helped with maintenance of the garden, which today is a beautiful remembrance of a young life lost. “It was such a beautiful place. The mother greeted each of the cyclists and passed out freeze pops to us. It was truly a positive memory that I will never forget.”

Karen’s favorite part of the tour was her feeling of self-accomplishment. “I wasn’t really sure that I would be able to do it. I never in my life rode 60 miles in one ride. When I got to Genesee Valley Park it came over me that I am able to do this, and that was huge for me,” she said.

To sum up her eight days biking along the Erie Canal Trail with 750 other cyclists that she never met before, Karen said, “It was the experience of a lifetime. All along the way the people in the towns and villages were so welcoming and anxious to share everything with us. I made friends from all around the country and other countries, too. Friendships that will last a lifetime, all centered around this beautiful experience of riding along the historic Erie Canal.”

Four new tugboats ordered for NY canals

On August 4, the New York power Authority and New York State Canal Corporation announced a strategic investment in the future of the New York State Canal system through the procurement of four new maintenance marine vessels. The new tugboats will be operated by Canal Corporation personnel and positioned along the 524-mile Canal system to support the continued operation and maintenance of the statewide navigable waterway. The first two tugboats are scheduled to be delivered in 2025, the bicentennial year of the Erie Canal, with two additional tugs planned for delivery in 2027.

“With more than 200 communities along its banks, an investment in New York State’s Canal system is an investment in the upstate economy,” said New York power Authority and Canal Corporation Trustee and Syracuse

A rea Canal r ecreationist Bea Gonzalez. “The Canal Corporation’s workforce that maintains this historic and vital water transportation route and recreational asset will leverage these new tugboats to ensure our children and grandchildren can enjoy all of the benefits the Canal system offers for many decades to come.”

New York power Authority president and CEO Justin E. Driscoll said, “Once placed into service, these new maintenance vessels will give our dedicated personnel the opportunity to complete their tasks safely while operating aboard modern tugboats

equipped with the latest marine technology. As stewards of the Canal system, we know how important the iconic waterway is to so many communities. These new work boats will help ensure the canals continue to support economic development, community building, and expanded recreational uses across our great state for years to come.”

Staffed by Canal Corporation tugboat captains and floating plant personnel, the new steel inland tugs, each 64.5-feet long, will support operations required to maintain navigation along the Canal system. Some of this work includes buoy placement and retrieval, movement of spoils in hopper scows, transporting of dredge pipe, and mobilizing hydraulic and mechanical dredge units. In addition, the new tugs will have ice breaking capabilities built into them such as thicker steel and tighter spaced framing in the bow.

New York State Canal Corporation Director Brian U. Stratton said, “These four new tugboats are a significant investment into the Canal Corporation’s maintenance fleet that routinely ply the waters of upstate New York. For nearly two centuries the Erie, Champlain, Oswego, and Cayuga-Seneca Canals have been economic engines – supporting livelihoods and commerce while spurring the growth of villages, towns, and cities – and this investment ensures our workforce can efficiently maintain the canal’s navigable

waters for the next generation of users.”

In 2017, the Canal Corporation contracted with AENY, located in Northport, NY to perform a vessel assessment of its floating equipment. Based on the assessment, a long-term plan was developed to replace the aging fleet. The construction of the four new vessels will be in accordance with U.S. Coast Guard Sub-Chapter M regulations and a U.S. Coast Guard Certificate of Inspection will be obtained.

When delivered, the new tugs will be placed into service alongside the Tug Syracuse, a 1934 tugboat built by the State of New York that has been the workhorse of the maintenance fleet since its launch. The new tugboats also will join the Canal

Corporation’s Harriet Tubman , one of 10 smaller push tugboats that have been added to the fleet over the past five years.

The Board of Trustees for the New York power Authority, which owns and operates the New York State Canal Corporation as a subsidiary, awarded the contract to Blount Builders Inc. of Warren, rhode Island at its July 27, 2023, meeting. In 2020, Blount Builders Inc. successfully delivered the Breaker II, a tugboat owned and operated by the New York power Authority that supports its generation of electricity and champions ice breaking activity in the winter months along the Niagara river in Western New York. provided information.
