There were many happy young faces at Seymour Library in Brockport Saturday, December 12, as Strong West held its community holiday party complete with crafts, stories, treats and a visit from Santa and his elf.

This was the second year Strong West hosted the community celebration, but the first time it took place at the Seymour Library.

“It gives us an opportunity to give back to a community that has really welcomed us with open arms,” said URMC’s Karin Gaffney Christensen. “We feel privileged to care for our neighbors and to partner with our friends at the Seymour Library.”

The event was free and those attending were encouraged to bring a food or toy item to donate to the Brockport Ecumenical Food Shelf and the Brockport Toy Shelf.

Seymour Library Children’s Librarian Natalie Burch said the library serves as a central location for the holiday event. “It’s a really great program,” she said. “Anytime we can partner with Strong West is great.” She noted Strong West helped out with this past summer’s reading program. The theme was “heroes” and Strong West sent a physician to the library to speak to young participants as part of that event.

Additionally on December 12, the library hosted a workshop with Brockport’s Bread Man Chet Fery in the Local History Room. The Emily Knapp Museum presented the event and featured the making of holiday bread. Participants were able to take away a container of bread to bake at home. Saturday afternoon, Mrs. Claus made a visit to the Local History Room to read holiday stories and collect letters to Santa - an event also presented by the Emily Knapp Museum.

It’s A Very Merry Baby at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Welcoming a new baby is a joyous event in the life of a family. Sometimes, however, the new mom lacks the financial means to purchase clothing and other items needed to keep her newborn comfortable and warm.

St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Brockport offers complete layettes to moms in need. The layettes are distributed throughout the year. Since it began, dozens of moms and babies in Brockport and the surrounding area have benefited from the program.

Twice a year - at Christmas and Mother’s Day - St. Luke’s reaches out to the community for assistance in restocking the nursery shelves with much-needed items in sizes newborn and 0-3 months.

Items needed for this year’s A Very Merry Baby campaign include: long-sleeved white T-shirts and onsies, gowns and sleepers, long-sleeve shirt and pant sets,

sweaters, sock, hats and other outerwear, receiving and crib blankets, baby bath towels, washcloths, baby wash and lotions, small bibs, diapers for newborn or size 1, and diaper rash cream. Gift cards to stores that sell diapers and/or baby clothes as well as body lotion for the new moms are also welcome.

To help new moms and their infants throughout the year, support St. Luke’s A Very Merry Baby campaign and drop off new items at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 14 Main Street, Brockport between 9 a.m. and noon, Monday through Friday. The Very Merry Baby Campaign continues through the end of the year.

Opinion/Comments Where is the Christ of Christmas?

Where is the Christ of Christmas? Do we live in America, the land of the free and the brave? Then tell me why is everyone becoming so afraid to Keep Christ in Christmas? What is it with all the Happy Holidays and Hanukkah and trees and Santa, but no manger scene?

Sixty-six Kendall seniors recently had the opportunity to talk to professionals in the fields that interest them as part of Senior Interview Day at Kendall Junior/Senior High School. This event directly ties to the district’s mission of preparing students for life outside of school. Some of the professionals in attendance included tradesmen, media professionals, health care workers and law enforcement officials.

The students filled out a questionnaire to identify what careers they are interested in pursuing and then Kendall administration did their best to match each student with a professional in that field. Beginning in September, students began working with their Government and ELA teachers to prepare for their interviews by creating resumes, cover letters and thank you notes. Counselors worked with the students on how to dress for an interview and use appropriate body language and speech in the interview.

Senior Interview Day simulated what it would be like for the students to apply for a job in their field.

Students submitted their resumes to the professionals prior to the interview. Some professionals had part-time jobs or internship opportunities available that they screened students for. The seniors had a chance to ask for career advice, have their questions about college or vocational training answered, and find out how to prepare for their intended career through opportunities such as part-time jobs, internships or volunteer work.

After the interview, the professionals completed a rubric for each student. Teachers shared the feedback from the rubric with students to help them improve their performance in the future.

The seniors completed the experience by writing their thank you notes to the professionals right after the interview. “The kids really look forward to this day,” said Principal Carol D’Agostino. She said the program has taken place at Kendall for at least 11 years.

Twenty-eight employers participated in the event this year, many of whom are Kendall alumni, too.

Dr. Hannah Bushnell, a 2006 alumnus of Kendall and a psychiatry resident in Elmira, participated in Senior Interview Day as a professional for the first time. She had previously participated as a student when she was interested in becoming an actress.

Bushnell is still working on her degree and hopes to work in a hospital with autistic children when she finishes her education.

When Bushnell went to Kendall, she participated in the Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES program, New Visions, to explore a career in the medical field and that helped spark her interest in pursuing a career in psychiatry. She also said her English classes helped her with writing reports in the medical field. Bushnell took physics and chemistry classes while at Kendall.

She said that those classes challenged her, but they helped her because she had to prove herself, complete projects and learn to study.

Bushnell enjoyed participating in Senior Interview Day. “I was impressed that the students were prepared and able to answer my questions,” Bushnell said. “They had a real vision of their futures. I was also able to give them feedback on the experience, which is terrific, because how often do you actually receive that in an interview situation?”

Scholarship applications for Margaret McGrath Foundation due March 1 The Scholarship Applications for the Margaret A. McGrath Charitable Foundation are due March 1, 2016, for the 20162017 Academic School Year.

The foundation offers two types of scholarships to residents of the towns of Sweden and Hamlin: •The Philip and Margaret Dollard Business Scholarship is awarded to qualifying college students who major in Business.

•The Marie Dollard McGrath Elementary Education Scholarship is awarded to qualifying college students who major in Elementary Education.

Scholarships are available to students

who enroll full time in either undergraduate or graduate studies meeting the scholarship requirements. Multiple scholarships are available each year.

The foundation encourages qualifying 2016 graduating high school seniors and current college students to apply. A total of $508,000 in scholarships has been awarded since 2005. Christmas Care Packages Are on the Way! As many of you may know, each year we send the proceeds of our annual Halloween Candy Buy Back to Operation Gratitude, an all volunteer organization that assembles individual care packages which are then sent to our troops overseas.

Those items are currently being put to use as thousands of packages are shipped overseas just in time for Christmas. Each package sent contains a collection of personal items, candy, and a note from home and each one is addressed and delivered to a specific serviceman or woman. This year our local contribution consisted of over 200 pounds of candy plus cases of toothpaste, toothbrushes and other personal items for our troops.

I would like to express my gratitude to all the kids, parents and grandparents who brought in donations and to all the businesses and individuals who helped make our local efforts such a big success. This year we received cash donations from 11 local businesses and organizations to help with shipping costs.

Hilton CSD Sports Hall of Fame to recognize 2005 Girls’ Cross Country Team The Hilton High School Sports Hall of Fame will induct the 2005 National Championship Girls’ Cross Country Team at Hilton High School on Tuesday, December 29.

This year’s honored Hilton CSD team will include members and coaching staff: Head Coach Mike Szczepanik; assistant coaches Jeff Merkel and Seth Blodgett; and athletes Caileen Childs ’06, Nicole Griffiths ’06, Amanda Griggs ’06, Shelby Herman ’08, Ashley Jones ’08, Ashlea Keene ’06, Allison Sawyer ’07, Caroline Schultz ’07 and Erin Pratt ’09.

The Induction Ceremony will take place during the Hilton High School Hall of Fame Boys Basketball Tournament. All members of the Hilton Sports Hall of Fame and community members are invited to attend the presentation of inductees in the auditorium at 4:30 p.m. The inductees will also receive recognition in the gym at the beginning of Hilton varsity game vs. Greece Athena at approximately 6:15 p.m.

The Hilton Central School District Sports Hall of Fame annually recognizes those individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the Hilton athletic program and in some cases, at a higher level through their participation as athletes, coaches or administrators. Candidates must be graduates of Hilton High School for a minimum of five years or retired coaches from the Hilton Central School District.

Candidates include those who have made outstanding contributions to the Hilton sports program or established themselves in the field of athletics at the local, state, national or international level (professional, Olympic, college athlete, coach, etc.); students who, while in high school, received athletic honors such as All-American, All-State, All-Greater Rochester, State/Sectional Championship, Athlete of the Year or All-County. Brockport Police Department to particiate in STOP-DWI Crackdown for the Holiday Season Members of the Brockport Police Department will add additional patrols throughout various shifts this upcoming holiday season in an effort to deter intoxicated driving.

Christmas and New Years have a history as a deadly period for impaired driving. New York State Police, County Sheriff and municipal law enforcement agencies across the state will be out in force to reduce the number of alcohol related injuries and deaths during the season.

The STOP-DWI Holiday Season Crackdown is one of many statewide enforcement initiatives promoted by the New York State STOP-DWI Foundation. The Statewide STOP-DWI Crackdown Campaign also targets Super Bowl weekend, St. Patrick’s Day, Memorial Day, July 4 Holiday

and Labor Day. These efforts receive full support with funding from both the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

While STOP-DWI efforts across New York have led to significant reductions in the numbers of alcohol and drug related fatalities, still too many lives are being lost because of crashes caused by drunk or impaired drivers.

Highly visible, highly publicized efforts like the STOP-DWI Crackdown Campaign aim to further reduce the incidence of drunk and impaired driving.

Kendall students learn about immigrant experience day Teachers on the Kendall Eighth-Grade Junior High Team recently organized an Immigrant Experience Day for their students. Eighth-grade students had read stories by immigrants from other countries and studied the history of immigration in the United States. They had an opportunity to hear a first-hand account of immigration from a Kendall staff member and sampled ethnic food from many countries.

The Immigrant Experience Day is part of the eighthgrade team’s method of finding new ways to incorporate what the students learn in the classroom into their lives.

Interdisciplinary units allow the students to better retain ideas and concepts that they learn in the classroom, and it gives the students the opportunity to expand their knowledge and apply it to different subjects.

Students listened to the personal story of Mirjam Bauer, a counselor in the high school, who became a naturalized United States citizen after her time spent here as an exchange student. She shared her experiences of adapting to the culture of the United States and her ties with her family in Holland. Bauer also shared the process involved in becoming a citizen and the citizenship test that she had to take.

Eighth-graders in Marlene Magliocco-Morrow’s ELA class read “Inside Out & Back Again” by Thanhha Lai, a critically acclaimed novel about a young Vietnamese girl who flees Saigon during its fall. Students in Morgan Engelbert’s social studies class studied immigration and the social and political ramifications experienced by those who come to the United States. Gretchen Rosales’ Spanish 8 students read “The Circuit: stories from the life of a migrant child” by Francisco Jiménez, which details the story of a young child trying to find his voice in society and highlights his struggle to belong.

Members of the eighth-grade team also brought in food from cultures that represent their ancestry and heritage.

Math teacher Kaitlyn Curtis made German chocolate cookies; Magliocco-Morrow prepared antipasto; Rosales made Mexican rice; and science teacher David Heffron provided tortilla chips and salsa. The students were excited to try ethnic foods and many were surprised that they enjoyed the different tastes from around the world.

•Jurs, Elizabeth A. “Libby,” age 59, died December 12, 2015 following a long illness. Libby was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Elba. Mrs. Jurs had also served for 24 years as a school nurse for the Kendall Central School System. Libby is survived by her husband of 36 years, H. John Jurs; her children: Jacob (Katherine) Jurs of Barre, Joshua (Robin Wells) Jurs of Barre, Jennifer (Leonard Parlier) Jurs of Albion; her sister: Barbara (Jeff) Benedict of Rochester; her parents: Marvin and Viola Stokes of Elba; and her ten grandchildren.

Her Funeral Service was held December 18 in the Elba Presbyterian Church. Interment in Maple Lawn Cemetery.

•Waterhouse, Yvonne R., age 67, died December 13, 2015 in Strong Memorial Hospital following a long illness.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Michael; her son, John Waterhouse of Albion; brother, Don Stevens of Kentucky; her sister, Lavita Podraza of Texas; several nieces and nephews. Yvonne was a member of the Gaines Carlton Community Church, and was the owner of a second-hand clothing store in Rochester named Affordable Fashions. She also ran another business that featured her skills as an artist, designing jewelry with a fishing theme.

Mrs. Waterhouse also worked as a floral designer for Tops however, her greatest love was being a Past Director for P.A.W.S. in Albion. Through a pre-existing agreement with the University of Rochester, Yvonne has chosen to help further the advancement of Medical Research by making an Anatomical Gift.

Her Memorial Service will be held Saturday, January 9 at 2 p.m. in the Gaines Carlton Community Church, 14585 Ridge Road, Albion. Donations can be made to P.A.W.S. Animal Shelter, 3371 Gaines Basin Road, Albion, NY 14411 in her memory.

•Morabito, Maria A. (Mary) “Surace,” died December 10, 2015 at age 84. Predeceased by her husband, Joseph.

Survived by her children, Cheryl (Edward) Pratt, Joseph (Kathy) and Kevin (Suzanne); loving grandmother of seven;

and great-grandmother of four; brothers and sisters; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; cousins and dear friends.

Mary was a long time Manager of OTB. Her Funeral Mass was celebrated December 14 at St. Christopher’s Church, North Chili. Interment Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

•Hurysz, Constance S. (Marcussi), died December 12, 2015, at age 96. Predeceased by her husband, Florian “Chic;” brothers, Pat and Thomas Marcussi; sisters, Carmel Turri and Margaret Altobelli. Survived by her devoted nephew, David (Maryanne) Altobelli; special great-nephew, Adam Altobelli; nieces, Nancy Marcussi, Karen Heintz, Barbara Hurysz and Dr. Jane McMahon of California; sisters, Katherine Fink and Vivian Lauricella; dear friends, Sandra VanPutte and Michael Lucas; many other nieces, nephews and friends. Connie was a devoted parishioner of St. Pius Tenth Church, and very active in the parish community.

•Rinebold, Gailann H. (Sweet-Sable), December 13, 2015. Survived by husband, William Rinebold; children, Patricia (Edward) Duignan, Richard Sable; step-son, Mark (Julie) Rinebold; six grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and four step-great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

•Guerin, Wilfred J., died December 11, 2015, at age 93.

Predeceased by his wife, Mary, “Peg,” 2012. Survived by his children, Michael (Mollie) and Diane Guerin; grandsons, Taylor and Evan Guerin; his sister, Rita Heath; several nieces and nephews and many friends. He was a WWII Veteran of the 69th Signal Battalion serving in France and Germany. Bill was a former employee of Hickok Manufacturing and an Eastman Kodak Company retiree.

Bonnie Spurr Hunzinger, 94, of Clearwater Florida, died December 10, 2015 at Suncoast Hospice. Born in Brockport, N.Y., she moved to Clearwater, Florida in 1967 with her husband of 52 years, Carl, who passed away in 1998. Bonnie developed a love of “Nascar” after breaking her first hip.

Left to cherish her memory are her two daughters; Bunnie Beardsley of Hamlin, and Carla Warren of Dunedin, Fla., four grandchildren; Kara (Rick) Hayward, Heather Beardsley, Rashaun Warren and Richard Warren, and three great grandchildren; Jimmy, Sydney and Alex. She also leaves behind her dear brother Rick (Karen) Spurr and his family and many loving cousins, nieces and nephews.

Ronald Kenyon Hall 4/10/1935-12/11/2015 Beloved husband and best friend to his wife of 60 years, Margaret Jane McKnight Hall, passed away peacefully December 11, 2015 at 8:20 p.m. at their home in Lake Butler, Florida. He was born April 10, 1935 in Medina, New York. He proudly served in the U.S. Army and later worked most of his career at Eastern Air Lines in Miami, Tampa and Gainesville, Florida and in Denver Colorado. He loved football, basketball, baseball, fishing, reading and movies, and was keenly aware, and a great lover of nature and the great outdoors.

Ronald left behind his wife Margaret, seven children, Ronald McKnight Hall (wife Janet), Louanne Arlene Rigano (husband Daniel), Lori Jean Burke (husband Dennis), Phillip Leon Hall, David Lawrence Hall (wife Vanessa), Lynn Margaret Harden (husband Joel) and Kevin Wade Hall (wife Heather). His parents, Ronald Mark Hall and Alita Ruth Kenyon Hall, passed away many years ago, as did his sister, Mary Lou Ramsdell and her husband Raymond.

Ronald was blessed with 18 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. He once wrote in his reflections, “Man’s life is but a short pause compared to what awaits him in the hereafter. Man should use this life to prepare to enter the kingdom of heaven where he will spend eternity...”

Viewing and services were held Wednesday, December 16, 2015, commencing at 10:00 a.m., at Harmony Free Will Baptist Church in Lake Butler, Florida. Ronald will be laid to rest at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations on behalf of Ronald to the Hospice of Citrus and the Nature Coast.
