Trailing by as many as nine points late in the first half and badly out-rebounded, Spencerport rallied in the second half to squeeze out a 48-46 win over visiting Hilton in boys basketball. The Rangers who won only four games all of last season, have exceeded ten or more wins just once over the last 15 years and haven’t won a division title since the 1997-98 campaign, picked up their third win of the young season under first year head coach Kyle Trevas. “That’s (rebounding) been a focus of ours after we got slammed on the boards in our first game against Brighton,” Trevas said. “We’ve been focused since then and are also taking very good care of the ball. All three wins have been by two points or less, so we’re finding a way to win.” Hilton held the Rangers to just one free throw during a six minute portion of the second quarter as they built a 23-14 lead. Senior guard Bailey Pittman hit four three-pointers in the first half alone and Brett Turpyn knocked down two of his own to account for much of the Cadets offense. The Rangers chipped away late in the second quarter as Justin Johnson and David DeBellis hauled down of-

fensive rebounds and hit put-backs to make the Hilton lead five at halftime. Junior guard Ryan Gentile hit a jumper and a trey on consecutive possessions in the third quarter to put the Rangers on top for the first time in the game. The Cadets tied it later in the quarter on a Joey Lipani trey, but Spencerport’s Gentile hit on a three-pointer and senior guard Zekiah Owens stole the ball and drove the length of the court for the slam to rebuild the lead. The Rangers led by seven points in the fourth quarter before the Pittman show began again for Hilton. He hit on an alley-op lay-up, a trey and on a drive to pull his Cadets to within 46-44 with two minutes remaining. But each team traded lay-ups over the final 90 seconds to end the contest. Pittman led all scorers with 22 points including six treys. Turpyn had 12 points with six rebounds, three steals and three assists for the Cadets. Teammate Lipani added six points and Jonathan Letta added nine assists. Gentile led the Rangers with 15 points with three three-pointers and added five rebounds and three assists. Owens finished with ten points, five steals and five rebounds; Johnson tied for the team lead with six rebounds and added ten points while John Feeney came off the bench to also add six rebounds.

Junior guard Brandon Burke scored a varsity careerhigh 23 points and scored on a put-back and pair of free throws in the final minute as his Byron-Bergen boys basketball squad held off a late rally to defeat Barker 53-42 in their home opener. The Bees offense and defense were running on all cylinders in the first half as they built a 14-5 first quarter lead as Burke scored six points and Ryan Richardson added four. Burke hit three three-pointers and an angled bankshot in the second quarter with Colin Noeth and Rider Farnsworth adding field goals as Byron-Bergen had a convincing 29-12 halftime advantage.

They built that lead to 20 points early in the third quarter, but managed only four more points on baskets from Chase Felton and Noeth in the stanza as their offense got out of sync. Noeth put them back up 39-23 early in the fourth quarter, but Barker went on an 18-5 run to cut the Bees lead to just three points with two minutes remaining. Felton hit a huge trey from the right corner and Noeth hit on a drive to push the lead back to eight points before Burke sealed the game with a put-back after collecting the rebound off the missed front end of a one-and-one situation. In addition to Burke’s career-high 23 points, Noeth added 12 points and Farns-worth nine points for the 2-1 Bees.

Reitz, Wagner pace Cadets poolers by Warren Kozireski Adam Reitz and Max Wagner each had two individual event victories and was part of a relay team win as Hilton defeated Canandaigua 98-87 in boys swimming. Reitz won the distance events taking the 200-yard freestyle in 1:53.26 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:12.86. He was part of the top 200-yard medley relay team with Lee Lohrmann, Noah Neale and Paul Ditt-man in 1:48.96.

Wagner touched first in the 100-yard butterfly in :58.10 and the 100-yard backstroke in 1:00.85 and, with Lohrmann, Matt Buri and Joshua Rosario, won the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:35.34. Hilton’s Noah Neale was the fastest in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:08.13, Lohrmann won the 10yard freestyle in :51.80, Buri the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.34 and Brian Lane easily won the diving with 276.75 points—more than 120 better than the second place finisher for Canandaigua.
