With widespread community participation, 2,517 Valentines for Veterans were collected. Thus, not only meeting the challenge by exceeding the 1,236 collected in 2021, the number collected more than doubled the 2021 results.

Originally, all Valentines were to be delivered to the Batavia VA. But Valentines continued to arrive after the deadline.

These additional Valentines were delivered on February 14 to veterans living at Westwood Commons in North Chili and Eagle Star Veterans Home in Spencerport. Each veteran living at Eagle Star was also given a $25 gift card from the Harvey C. Noone Auxiliary #954’s Poppy Fund to assist them in their efforts to transition from homelessness back into the community.

Thanks to all who participated, it meant the world to those veterans who received your expressions of gratitude and admiration.

Appreciates article I appreciate an article that has been well written and is factual. A lot is going on at our American/Canadian border, and I am trying to keep abreast of the developments.

This article was refreshing in that it reminds us that peaceful protests can bring about results while remaining peaceful. I can fully appreciate fighting for freedom and fighting to maintain it. If we could do it honorably, respectfully, and peacefully, we can get our point across without causing damage or being inconsiderate of others’ property.

Thank you for this well-written article, and I look forward to reading more like it.

I was surprised to read Tami Raco’s piece in the Westside News on the Canadian Freedom Convoy 2022 as it is unusual to feature international news in a hyper-local paper. True, there was a rally at the Rainbow bridge and local connections, but I found the long, descriptive portrayal of the convoy gauzy and one-sided.

The Canadian Truckers Alliance, a federation representing truckers across Canada, denounced the protest in January before it even left British Columbia headed to Ottawa, noting that protests on public roadways, highways, and bridges are not the way to resolve differences with the government. The protest quickly became extremist, galvanizing far right groups internationally. Joining the Canadian flags on the streets in Ottawa were confederate flags and flags with swastikas. Trucker horns blared all night long, keeping Ottawans awake. On February 4, GoFundMe removed the donation page for the Freedom Convoy 2022. This has not stopped supporters of the movement who are planning similar protests in the EU and the USA. Freedom Convoy 2022 is not ultimately about vaccines (80% of Canadian truckers and the Canadian population are vaccinated). It is not about freedom.

Attempting to bring the government to its knees while trampling on the rights of fellow citizens does not advance the cause of personal freedom. And urging readers of the article to like Turning Point USA, a far right college student organization, on Facebook is a political statement and a violation of sound journalistic practices.

It’s about freedom

Beddingfield was out on bail for attempted murder when he assaulted officers at the January 6 insurrection.

The New York Bail Reform law is an attempt to provide fairness to the judicial system so that there is not one set of rules that applies to those with financial means and another set of rules that applies to those without financial means. The cause of crime is complex and the solutions to the rise in crime will probably also be complex. Republican leaders, if they wanted to reduce crime, would seek to understand the causes of crime. Instead, they want a campaign sound bite that can scare up voters.

I read Tami Raco’s article in Westside News on the convoy/Peace Bridge rally. I thought she did a great job explaining what was happening and why. After all, we have every right to show our support for our freedom to make medical decisions for ourselves. The truckers are not the only ones who feel this way. Millions of Canadians and Americans understand it is our duty to check government when they get too big and attempt to force unconstitutional mandates on the citizens, as has been happening for the past two years.

Prime Minister Trudeau is disparaging the truckers who are risking their jobs, their employment, all while praying for the tyranny to end. They are indeed trying to save Canada. Americans and Canadians are tired of this nonsense. We know what the truth is. We want the chaos to stop. The truckers are doing what is right.

I also read what Margay Blackman wrote. I wonder if she realizes that the US and Canada have adjoining borders, that we have similar constitutions, that Canada modeled their Charter of Rights and Freedoms after ours.

It is about freedom, Margay; it is about having the Godgiven rights to protect ourselves from tyranny, to have the right and the option to not put into our bodies foreign chemicals. I think twisting the truth is a violation of sound journalistic practices.

Cause of crime is more complex than bail reform Republican leaders are using New York’s bail reform law to scare up votes. They claim that the increase in crime is directly related to the bail reform law. However, crime is up all across the country, including in places that have no bail reform laws. Thus, the connection between bail reform and crime is tenuous at best.

Let’s be clear, bail is something of value that an arrested person gives to the court to ensure a future court appearance. People with means can get out of jail quickly while those without means sit in jail awaiting trial. Republicans would have to argue that those accused of a crime, before conviction, must be locked up for their argument to have merit. For example, Harvey Weinstein paid $1 million in bond and was set free awaiting trial. Matthew
