New Spencerport Depot and Canal Museum director wraps up first year in the post by Kristina Gabalski Nora Venezky says she has the best office space in the Village of Spencerport. That’s because she is the director of the Spencerport Depot & Canal Museum, located at 16 East Avenue, on the southern bank of the Erie Canal. The Spencerport native and 2008 graduate of Spencerport High School took over the reins from Doreen Castano in January 2016, and she says the experience is proving to be very exciting for her.
“I am trying to get everyone who lives in Spencerport to come in at least once,” she explains. “I want to make people more aware and have them appreciate this.” Although she is young, Nora has an extensive background in history and museum studies to bring to the post. She graduated from SUNY Oneonta in 2012 with a degree in history and art and then received her master’s in museum studies from the University of Toronto in 2014.

She completed an internship at Genesee Country Museum and then at the Spencerport Depot & Canal Museum while she was a graduate student. “I love museums,” Nora says. “They are a blend of my passions and interests.” As soon as she received her master’s degree, Nora was hired by the Depot & Canal Museum board to document and organize the museum’s object collection. She was hired as assistant director to Doreen Castano before becoming director nearly one year ago. The post is a part-time job, Nora explains, but she is also very involved in the Spencerport/Ogden community, serving as village historian and deputy Town of Ogden historian. She is also busy as a member of the committee planning the Ogden Bicentennial/Spencerport Sesquicentennial in 2017. Nora says her first season as director has been wonderful. “We had great attendance, 4,000 people through this year,” she says. Two hundred boaters docked with the Depot & Canal Museum this summer - the museum also functions as the Spencerport visitor center - meaning it offers information and amenities for those boating on the Erie Canal. “We had people from all over the world - Japan, New Zealand, Brazil ... people don’t realize the tourism we get in Spencerport,” Nora says. “It’s a favorite stop for boaters.” Grant writing is an important part of the
job, Nora explains. This year a Genesee Valley Arts grant helped to fund Heritage Day programs and Nora hopes to receive similar funding in the future. Next season the focus of museum displays will shift from local technology roots to more local history in general, she says, in honor of the village and town anniversary years. “2017 is also the bicentennial of when construction on the Erie Canal began,” she adds. Nora says she hopes to set up an interactive corner for children and focus exhibits on canal history as well as town and village history. She says that the town and village have monthly events planned throughout the year to mark the bicentennial/sesquicentennial. The favorite part of her job is meeting people, “from so many walks of life. I love to hear their stories,” Nora says. Her experience of traveling the entire length of the canal has also helped her to gain knowledge of where various points of interest are located outside of Spencerport. She encourages anyone to travel the canal by boat, bike or by hiking along the trail. “It’s a great way to see New York State,” she says. “So often we just get on the Thruway.” Working as director is, “very cool,” Nora observes. “I have learned so much about Spencerport, especially the canal. It is an amazing piece of history that continues to have an impact today.”
Rangers win first state title by Warren Kozireski The Spencerport girls’ soccer team trounced Section I champion Pearl River 6-0 in the New York State semi-finals before beating top-ranked JamesvilleDeWitt 2-1 in come-from-behind fashion at SUNY Cortland to bring home the school’s first state title as well as finish #4 in the nation in the final USA Today poll. The Rangers entered the finals with eight consecutive shutouts, but it was Jamesville-Dewitt who found the net first early in the first half. They started the season on a mission after being upset in the opening round of last season’s Section V tournament as the top seed.
But Spencerport rebounded less than ten minutes later as Leah Wengender found Erin Coykendall for the tying goal. The Rangers then took a 2-1 lead before the half ran out as Leah Martone crossed to Coykendall, who headed it into the net. The Rangers finished their nearly perfect campaign with a 21-0-2 record. The core of the team will return next season, but seven seniors accomplished the rare feat of ending their high school soccer careers with a win including Sarah Honan, co-captain Isabella DiGuardi, Tori Macias, co-captain Chandler Stephany, Brooke Antinoro, Olivia Icobelli and Maliah Benedetto.

Thank you to Town of Parma residents It is important to say thanks to the Town of Parma residents in defeating Proposal #1-2016. If passed, the town board would have had say in who selects the Highway Superintendent. With this defeat it proves that as residents, what goes on in our town is important to all of us. Thanks again for voting no. Your vote keeps our voices relevant. Jeremiah Clifford Parma

Hamlin Morton Walker Fire District supports new Knox HomeBox® The Hamlin Morton Walker Fire District has established a new emergency Access program supporting the homeowners in the community of their Fire District using the new Knox® HomeBox™ Single key Vault. This will provide the Fire Department a rapid access system to homes for an emergency without forcing entry. The HomeBox is a heavy-duty secure key vault installed outside the home typically on or near the front door giving the Fire Department access. Once the homeowner has it installed, they contact the Fire Department at 964-2330 or hmwknox@hmwfire.com and arrange time for them to place their house key inside and lock it. Only their Fire Department can lock or unlock it and they keep the key secure when not in use. In a home emergency requiring assistance, if the people inside are unable to open the door or if they are not in the house, the responding fire crews can open the HomeBox and enter the house. They avoid force entry and costly al-
ternatives of breaking down the door or a window. Once the firefighters get inside they can address the situation and take appropriate action. When completed they will re-secure the home and return the house key to the HomeBox. Chief Ken Keirn states, “Having home emergency access will assist us in saving people and property. The HomeBox will help us enter the home quickly without damaging property.” Knox President Joni Trempala stated, “We’re excited to offer the homeowner our new Knox Homebox, which the Fire Department can use to get fast access to you or your home in an emergency.” To learn more about the Knox HomeBox, visit KnoxHomeBox.com or call 855-GET-KNOX (855-438-5669). Contact the Hamlin Morton Walker Fire District at 964-2330 or email hmwknox@hmwfire.com for questions. Provided information

Comments Bicentennial/Sesquicentennial dinner theater prepares community for celebration In anticipation of the Town of Ogden’s Bicentennial Celebration in 2017, a full house at the Whittier Party House attended a dinner theater, “A Hike Through History on November 4. The play was written by local playwright, Don Lenhard, and directed by John Goehle. The cast included many of our local Ogden citizens, whether still living here or born here, who pulled together to present an amusing history of our Town of Ogden from the settler who built the first house, to the naming of the town, and then up to the days of the advent of women’s rights and the passage of a local ordinance promoted by the WCTU making Ogden a “dry town, and then to the rumors of the Erie Canal to be dug through the local Spencer Farm, culminating in the singing of the famous “Erie Canal Song. Thank you to everyone who participated and attended this production. As the town historian of Ogden, I am thrilled to see such interest in our upcoming Ogden Bicentennial, and Spencerport Sesquicentennial. There are events in the planning stage for the celebration of this banner year. You too can participate. There is a committee that meets regularly to plan and carry out an event for each month of 2017. Please contact me, Carol Coburn, Ogden Historian, or Nora Venezky, Spencerport Historian, Supervisor Lenhard, Mayor Penders or David Haines, Ogden Historical Society President, to be put in contact with other folks planning events in your area of interest. We would love to see everyone in town participate in the Big Year-Long Celebration. Carol F. Coburn Ogden Town Historian

Churchville-Chili HS National Honor Society welcomes 114 new members On November 7, the Churchville-Chili Chapter of National Honor Society (NHS) made history, inducting 114 new members in a ceremony at the C-C PAC. The school has never before had so many outstanding students qualify for this honor. The evening included a chance for members, families and guests to hear from the newly elected club officers and the 2016 Churchville-Chili Teacher of the Year, Kevin Mead. The four new NHS officers were selected in September. Senior officers this year are: Dana Damiani (President); Kate Wilson (Vice President); Emma Bennett (Treasurer) and Anna Kostarellis (Secretary). Each of the officers shared a brief message with the audience on one of the four criteria for membership in NHS: leadership, character, service and scholarship. Music teacher Mead was nominated for the Teacher of the Year award last spring by current members of the NHS and then chosen by officers. The honor goes to a
teacher who makes a real difference in the lives of students. This is the second time Mead has received the award. During the ceremony, current members escorted new members across the stage while club officers read biographies from their applications. District Superintendent Lori Orologio, Senior High School Principal William Geraci and Teacher of the Year Mead greeted and congratulated each student personally. New members received a certificate and signed their name in the club registry. “This is always one of my favorite nights of the school year,” said NHS Advisor Paul Glor. “I’m excited about the volunteer opportunities coming up this year and the chance to work with this amazing group of young men and women. The club is planning several group activities including fall yard work in the community, ringing bells for Salvation Army and participating in the Daniel’s 5K.”

Churchville-Chili athletes proudly sign National Letters of Intent Three of Churchville-Chili High School’s most outstanding athletes were recently awarded athletic scholarships from their chosen colleges. Cross Country/Track champion Anna Kostarellis will head to Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio to compete with the Xavier Musketeers. Katie Cosgrove will join the Blue Devils lacrosse team at Durham, North Carolina’s Duke University. Nina Orlowski will play lacrosse for the Dolphins at Le Moyne University in Syracuse, New York. Senior Anna Kostarellis has been a member of the Saints Varsity Cross Country, Indoor Track and Outdoor Track and Field teams throughout her high school career at Churchville-Chili. She currently holds or has broken 21 school records. Anna was also Churchville’s female athlete of the year in 2015 and has won Section V titles and qualified and participated in the state finals and nationals in multiple seasons. A member of the school’s National Honor Society, Kostarellis excels in academics as well as in sports.
A four-time all-Monroe County firstteam pick and repeat AGR selection for lacrosse, C-C’s Katie Cosgrove is also an outstanding soccer player. As a freshman and sophomore, she played a major role in leading the girls’ lacrosse team to division titles in both 2013 and 2014. She has also lead the team in scoring over the past two seasons with 57 goals and 15 assists in 2015, and 56 goals and 13 assists in 2016. With 170 career goals and 229 career points, Cosgrove has an excellent chance to become the school’s all-time leader in both categories this upcoming spring season. Lacrosse midfield defender Nina Orlowski came to Churchville-Chili from Hilton last year as a junior. She has become a welcome addition to the C-C family. Her ability to adapt quickly to a new team and new program was impressive. Her flexibility as a player has been key to the Saints’ success. Last year, Orlowski played multiple positions and excelled at all while keeping a positive attitude and doing whatever was best for her team. Provided information

FASNY offers fire safety advice for Thanksgiving Thanksgiving: busiest day of the year for home fires As New Yorkers make plans to gather with friends and family to celebrate Thanksgiving, the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York urges all to have a happy, safe holiday. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), unattended cooking and cooking accidents are responsible for the majority of home fires and fire deaths. Thanksgiving is the busiest day of the year for cooking fires and in 2013, the holiday saw 230 percent more fires reported than the daily average. “This is one of the most joyous times of the year, when we gather with family and friends to enjoy one another’s company,” said FASNY President Ken Pienkowski. “FASNY asks all New Yorkers to follow these simple steps and advice to ensure that their holiday is a safe and happy one, and we wish everybody a very Happy Thanksgiving.” In addition to exercising caution when cooking, having working smoke alarms is critical in protecting against fires. Three of every five home fire deaths in the United States occurs in homes without smoke alarms or working smoke alarms. In 2015, legislation was passed and signed in Albany that will require all smoke alarms sold in New York State to be equipped with sealed-in, non-removeable batteries capable of powering the device for at least ten years. These alarms do not require battery changes during their lifespan, and greatly reduce the possibility of human error. The new legislation takes effect in 2017. The most common factors in home cooking fires and ways to avoid them: Unattended cooking The leading cause of fires in the kitchen: Stay in the kitchen while frying, grilling, or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen for even a short time, turn off the stove. If simmering, baking, roasting, or boiling food, check it regularly. Remain in the home while food is cooking, and use a timer as a reminder while it cooks, as guests, phones, children, pets and other activity can easily distract a cook. Objects near the cooking catching fire Clothing ignitions are common in home cooking fire deaths. It is important to wear
short, close-fitting, or tightly rolled sleeves as loose clothing can dangle onto stove burners or gas flames and catch fire. Keep the cooking area clean and combustible materials away from the stove top. Built-up grease as well as oven mitts, food packaging, wooden utensils, towels, curtains and other materials on or near the stove can catch fire. Cooking equipment unintentionally turned on or not turned off Be on alert. If sleepy or have consumed alcohol don’t use the stove or stovetop. Have children turned the stove on? Deep-frying turkeys Turkey fryers that immerse the turkey in cooking oil at high temperatures pose a significant danger of hot oil being released or spilled during cooking, leading to devastating burns, other injuries and property destruction.

If a fire occurs: •Just get out! When leaving, close the door to help contain the fire. •Call 911 or the local emergency number. •For an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed. •Do not use water to put out a grease fire. Use an appropriate fire extinguisher, or baking soda, salt, or a tight lid. Keep the lid nearby when cooking, to smother small grease fires. Smother the fire by sliding the lid over the pan and turn off the stovetop. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled. Always keep a box of baking soda near the stove. Hot cooking oil exposed to water or outdoor elements If rain or snow strikes hot cooking oil in propane-fired turkey fryers designed for outdoor use, the result can be a splattering of the hot oil or a conversion of the precipitation to steam, which can lead to burns. Frozen and defrosting turkeys also create the risk of contact between water and hot cooking oil, which can cause severe scalding or other serious injury. Never fry a frozen turkey. Source: NFPA

Holley Hawks soar through homecoming week At Holley Middle School/High School, special events took place in the week leading up to Homecoming. Each day, students dressed in class colors or in themed clothing. The Spirit Week themes included Class Color Day, Occupation Day, Holiday/Season Day, Hawaiian Day and School Spirit Day. On Friday, October 7, there was a pep rally in the gym, with the classes competing against each other in a hula hoop relay and dizzy bat race. On Friday evening, students participated in the annual Homecoming parade and float competition. Floats designed
by students in grades 7 through 12 were featured, showcasing a biome theme, and the PTSA judged the competition and awarded prizes. The seniors won the float competition with their rain forest float. On Saturday, October 8, student athletes took the stage, competing against Attica in boys and girls soccer games and Notre Dame in football. The Holley Varsity Boys’ Soccer team beat Attica 3-0 at the Woodlands, but the Varsity Girls’ Soccer team tied Attica, 0-0, in double overtime. The Varsity Football team beat Notre Dame, 3-0, scoring the game-winning field goal in overtime. Provided information

Kendall Elementary students celebrate Red Ribbon Week Kendall Elementary students spent the week of October 24 celebrating Red Ribbon Week. Red Ribbon Week is a drug awareness week held each year in tens of thousands of schools across the nation in which schools focus on educating young people about the dangers and consequences of using drugs and other unhealthy choices. Red Ribbon Week began in honor of the efforts of Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena in 1985. He was kidnapped, tortured and killed for his undercover work in Mexico. For more information about Red Ribbon Week and DEA Agent Camarena, visit http://redribbon.org/about/. Kendall students spent time during the week talking about positive and healthy choices. Each day followed a fun theme, which helped students get involved. The themes also kicked off discussions in classrooms. On Monday, students and staff wore crazy, mixed up outfits as a reminder to not let drugs mix them up. Tuesday’s
theme was “Hats Off to Being Drug Free!”, so students and staff sported crazy hats. On Wednesday, students wore tie-dye to match the theme “Don’t Get Tied Down with Drugs!” Following Thursday’s theme of “Shade Out Drugs!”, students and staff wore sunglasses. On Friday, students and staff showed their team spirit by wearing team jerseys for “Team up Against Drugs!” day. All students and staff signed stars that indicated their decisions to be drug-free and make positive choices in their lives. These stars will go on a yearlong display outside the gym as a visible reminder of the Kendall Elementary School community’s commitment to these choices. As a way of making good choices and showing care for the Kendall community, elementary students and staff collected non-perishable food for the Kendall Food Cupboard. Three hundred fifty-nine items were donated. This will help the food pantry during the upcoming holidays. Provided information

Several events in preparation include: •Kickoff celebration in Rome commemorating the ceremonial groundbreaking for the Erie Canal that took place in July 1817. •Waterway Tours by the replica canal schooner Lois McClure operated by the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, and orchestral tours by the Albany Symphony Orchestra and Syracuse Symphonia. •World Canals Conference in Syracuse, September 24 through 28, including major public events.

Senator Schumer seeks tax credits for Old Holley High renovation by Kristina Gabalski New York Senator Charles Schumer says he will work hard to ensure that the proposed project to transform the old Holley High School into senior housing and Holley Village office space will receive tax credits. Senator Schumer was in the Village of Holley November 11 to announce that he is pushing to secure $3.7 million in housing and historic tax credits for the restoration/ renovation project proposed by Home Leasing, LLC of Rochester. Schumer called the project a labor of love by Nelson Leenhouts, chairman and CEO of Home Leasing. “This building has been for years and years vacant,” the senator said, “it has needed some real TLC for the last 30 years.” The tax credits are the “lynch pin” to move the project forward, Senator Schumer explained. He noted that federal investment is critical to making the project a reality. “I’ll be fighting tooth and nail to get this done,” he said. The old Holley High School was built in 1931 in the neo-classical revival style and the renovation proposal calls for 41 mixedincome units for seniors, new village office space and a restoration of the auditorium for public events. Specifically, Schumer is urging the National Parks Service and its state partner, the NYS Office of Historic Preservation, as well as the Treasury Department and its state partner, the NYS Office of Homes and Community Renewal to allocate more than $3 million in historic preservation tax credits and $700,000 in housing tax credits. Schumer said the housing credits will leverage more than $7.1 million in private investment as part of the overall $17 million redevelopment plan. The project is expected to create 64 construction jobs during the 15-month construction period and two full-time jobs once the construction is complete.
New York Senator Charles Schumer speaks outside the old Holley High School November 11. Behind Schumer is Larry Francer of the Landmark Society of Western New York. K. Gabalski photo. Village of Holley Mayor Brian Sorochty thanked village, town, Orleans County and state officials as well as Senator Schumer for their efforts on behalf of the project. “There is a huge spirit of cooperation,” Mayor Sorochty said. “Senator Schumer has been a huge advocate of the project and of the Village of Holley.” Developer Nelson Leenhouts attended the announcement. “We’ve never been welcomed with such open arms,” he said of the Holley and Orleans County community. “We are grateful for Senator Schumer’s unwavering support of the housing and historic tax credits necessary to save community landmarks like the Holley High School,” Leenhouts added in a statement. “Redevelopment of this community landmark will provide a significant economic boost to the community and provide 41 new, affordable apartments to area seniors who can age in a place near friends, families and houses of worship.”

The Village of Churchville Mayor and Board of Trustees will host a presentation by a group of Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Civil Engineering students for the Willowbank Erosion Control Project. This presentation will be held on Wednesday, December 7, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at the Village of Churchville Board Room located at 23 East Buffalo Street, Churchville, NY. Presenters are Brian Bernard, Derek Briggs, Joseph Kellenberger and Kevin Reed. Their instructor is Paul Chatfield. The RIT Civil Engineering Technology Department requires each student to participate in a Capstone Project. The purpose of the Capstone Class is to provide the 5th year students with a real life project for them to work on and provide a design solution, using the skills that they have acquired during their RIT experience. Providing the students with a real life project and requiring them to come up with a solution (which includes meeting with the client, providing a design, engineering report, SEQR analysis, field surveying, cost estimates, engineering economics analysis, sustainability considerations, stormwater handling, etc.) is an important step in their professional growth. The next step in their project is for them to provide a 20 minute power point presentation to a real life audience of clients, professionals, peers, etc. Your participation is important and provides a real life experience for them to present their projects. As always, there will be time at the end of the presentation for questions and answers. Project Description: Village of Churchville Willowbank Drive Erosion Control Project: The Village of Churchville residents along Willowbank Drive have been experiencing severe erosion of their Creekside properties over the past decade or so. This project includes evaluating feasible alternatives to protect the shoreline of the properties. Also to be included in this analysis is a recommended alternative with the detailed design plans and compilation of the necessary permits and approvals that will be necessary. Review of the need and feasibility to dredge a portion of the adjacent creek will need to take place. The public is invited to attend. Any persons with special needs is asked to notify the village clerk one week in advance so that special accommodations may be made.

Hilton Education Foundation awards scholarships to Class of 2016 The Hilton Education Foundation (HEF) awarded two $2,500 scholarships in addition to two Microsoft Surface Pro 4 Tablets and the Surface Pro 4 Type Cover to Hilton High School 2016 graduates Alexa Miles and Michael Cunico. Alexa attends SUNY Brockport and Michael attends SUNY Buffalo. HEF offers two scholarships in its name annually to Hilton High School seniors. The Hilton Education Foundation Scholarship is awarded to a senior based on continued academic progress, extra-curricular involvement and volunteer work. The Foundation also awards the Hilton Education Foundation Skilled Trades and Services Scholarship to a student who will further his or her education in skilled trades or services. For a complete description of the criteria and an application, visit hiltoneducationfoundation.org/scholar.html Aaron and Alana Unterborn have donated of Microsoft Surface Pro 4 tablet computers along with matching Surface Type Covers to the HEF recipients this year. Aaron, a HCSD 1994 alum is Director for New Product Introduction at Microsoft where he manages the supply chain for Microsoft hardware including the world’s most productive tablets, which will hopefully be a valuable tool for these graduates. The dollar value of the donation is matched through Microsoft’s Give program and will go towards the HEF scholarship fund. HEF was incorporated in 2006 to provide students with opportunities beyond what the school district can provide. These opportunities are geared toward helping students become self-directed, lifelong learners who think critically and creatively and function as caring, responsible and productive members of society. Along with awarding scholarships, HEF supports the Cadet Cupboard and Principals’ Checkbook for students in need, and mini-grants to support new innovative classroom projects.
