A group of 36 Norwegians from two Sons of Norway Lodges near Stavanger in Southern Norway toured the Kendall area September 8 on a pilgrimage to the site of the first settlement of Norwegian immigrants in North America. They visited Norway Road in Kendall and the Cleng Peerson House on Kendall Road. The photo shows them gathered by the interpretive sign in the canalfront park in Holley that marks the site where the immigrants disembarked from the newly-completed Erie Canal in October 1825. Rite Aid/Dunkin Donuts projects come before Ogden Planning Board Developers eye opposite corners of Routes 31 and 259 intersection by Kristina Gabalski Two development proposals in the Town of Ogden could mean big changes at the busy Nichols Street (Route 31)/Union Street (Route 259) intersection. During their September 10 regular meeting, members of the Ogden Planning Board were presented with changes regarding a proposed Rite Aid Pharmacy, which would be located at the southeast corner of the intersection, and gave preliminary and final approval for a proposed Dunkin Donuts shop which would be located in the former CAM’s Pizza location. Bill Paladino of Ellicott Development presented a revised concept for the 14,000 sq. ft. Rite Aid Pharmacy - the anchor for the proposed Spencerport Mixed Use Center covering a little more than 33 acres, and which could eventually house approximately 14 commercial buildings. Paladino told the Board revisions in the concept site plan set the building back another 20 feet in each direction to allow
for more parking in the front. He said additional landscaping including trees is also planned, but did not yet have a comprehensive landscaping plan to present. He said landscaping will give the site, “a real presence from the intersection.” Adjustments were also made to the facade. Paladino explained there are now more distinct vertical separations including added dormers on the roofline. He also discussed with board members the use of mixed materials including the use of brick for the exterior. Paladino said the plan includes curb cuts on Union and Nichols Streets and that Ellicott Development would cover the expense of an additional traffic light or turning lanes, if necessary. Planning Board member Marc Robinson noted that as the development continues to grow, “the entrances might be too close to the corner.” At their August 13 meeting, Planning Board members had criticized the concept site plan, noting it did not fit the Master Plan nor conform to what they were looking for in the town’s Historic District. “It’s a gateway to the town and village,”
Planning Board attorney Keith O’Toole told Paladino at that time, and said the project should be sent back to the “drawing board.” At the September 10 meeting, Planning Board members appeared pleased with the changes. “I like the building better,” member Linda Del Regno said. Regarding the other major development on the September 10 agenda - the Dunkin Donuts shop with a drive-thru proposed for 2273 Union Street, the former CAM’s Pizza location - Town Engineer John Freel said grading around the back of the building must be addressed as well as an easement for a sanitary sewer. Additionally, the Ogden Zoning Board still has to consider an appeal for a special use permit which would allow for the drive-thru window and an area variance regarding parking. “Whatever the Board deems appropriate, we are prepared to do,” said Daniel Aureli, an attorney representing Frank Romeo, managing member of Ogden Land Company, LLC. “We don’t want adjoining neighbors to be in any way inconvenienced by the presence of this business. The grading will be done to the satisfaction of the
engineer and the Highway Department.” One resident spoke during a public hearing on the proposal and voiced concerns over traffic at the intersection and the difficulty in exiting the property. He noted the right-on-red at the Route 31/Route 259 intersection makes it very difficult to get a break in traffic. “You have to force yourself out,” he said. Planning Board member Tom Coburn asked if the fence would be replaced around the back of the property to shut out headlights of vehicles in the drive-thru from neighboring residential properties. Yes,” Aureli responded, “we will have more than enough canopy ... it will be resolved to your satisfaction.” Frank Romeo addressed concerns over potential noise from the drive-thru, explaining that digital technology now makes speakers more precise and adjusts the volume relative to ambient noise. “The speakers are even quieter at night,” he said. Final approval was given with the condition that concerns of Planning Board members be addressed. “Whatever you want, we will work it out before we see you again,” Romeo said.

One more thought ... Forget the words, just keep on dancing by Donna Haire Frivolous though it may sound, especially for a retired librarian, I love to dance. I always have. In my Walter Mitty life, I would have been a ballerina. (But in my real one, I had to take piano lessons instead.) I love all types of dance and as an adult, was lucky enough to find an exercise program that allowed me to “live the dream.” For over thirty years, choreographed dance has worked each and every muscle and kept me fit and healthy. And beyond that, it has given me joy; the kind of joy derived from expression of movement that has become almost as important as the air that I breathe. Not knowing if I’m allowed to mention it specifically, let’s just say it’s a program that rhymes with “Razzercise” and it’s rocked my world for decades. Only when I can no longer chasse and plie, will I allow them to carry my cold and broken body off the studio floor.
There is an interesting twist to being exposed to contemporary music and dance on a regular basis. Top 20 hits are the norm. From Rihanna to Ed Sheeran to Pitbull, to Pink, we work out to their music … and we inadvertently absorb the words to their songs! Now it’s “interesting” enough for ladies in their sixties to even know who Usher and Pitbull are, but we know their song lyrics. I don’t know how my counterparts in exercise feel, but I’m often a little embarrassed by the fact that I know this stuff. Maybe when the kids were younger, you could admit this and get away with being the “cool mom.” But there’s a fine line between being “cool” and being “creepy.” And when you model yourself as a conventional mom, often-quoted saying, “I’m not your friend, I’m your mother,” cool isn’t even an option. And now, when your sixty-something non-exercise peers say things like “Who the heck is Fergie” and you know that she’s lead singer for the Black Eyed Peas, it’s disconcerting. Mostly, I try not to talk about it. You can love the choreography and the workout, but at my age, “Don’t Cha” by the Pussycat Dolls is a bit much in terms of lyrics. Let’s just say that while 40 years ago it might have made my play list, today it just makes me feel foolish. Well, I’ve developed a strategy that will allow me to dance forever and maintain my aging dignity as well. For those of you who share my passion as well as my neurosis, here’ s how it works. It’s very simple. You pretend you can’t hear the lyrics. You never let on you know the words or even the artist. Rest assured, you are allowed to sing along but only to those songs that strike your fancy and feel right. You’re even allowed to sing along to those “earworms” that get into your head and live there for days. Even if some of them sound silly, it feels so good to move to them. But the ones that make you feel “creepy?” Just focus on the melody and if questioned, mention your failing sense of hearing and your dimming ability of recall. Taylor Who? Bruno What? “…don’t you wish your girlfriend was hot like me…” isn’t that a song about hot flashes? It has taken me a long time to arrive at this comfortable place. I didn’t know how to behave when my kids were teenagers. I would be a rich woman if I had a nickel for every eye-rolling incident in my house when the kids lived at home and played their favorite music. I might sing along, admitting that it was another “Razzercise” song, while they looked at me disdainfully. Everything is a “Razzercise” song, they would retort with more than a little disgust. The most memorable birthday card is one received from my now adult daughter which depicted a little girl covering her eyes and saying…Don’t tell me - she’s dancing again. Bottom line: Ideally, music and dance should never be about age. If a song moves the spirit, seize the moment. Do whatever you have to do in order to continue dancing. With the proper strategy in place, you can dance forever - and with wild abandon!

DEATH TAKES NO HOLIDAYS One common and unfortunate miscalculation that people make with regard to funeral preplanning is that they are either too young or too healthy to begin thinking about making advance arrangements. It is a fact of life that death does not necessarily observe a timetable and can occur at any time. When it does, all individuals should have clearly defined plans in place that make their desires known. Otherwise, the burden falls on their family members to discern their intentions without them. Decisions such as these are best not made during the emotionally charged period immediately following the death of a loved one. Nor is it enough to mention funeral decisions in a will, which
is usually read after the funeral. Thinking ahead can help you make informed and thoughtful decisions about funeral arrangements. It allows you to choose the specific items you want and need and compare the prices offered by several funeral providers. Another important consideration when planning ahead is where the remains will be buried, entombed, or scattered. For more information, please call THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME at 585-392-7100. We are located at 735 East Avenue, and we are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Family owned and trusted since 1976.

Since 2010, Oltean has also served as HCSTA Executive Board secretary, taking an active role in planning forums for public education and serving on the district’s APPR Committee. As an educator, Oltean said she never settles for mediocrity, always tries to find the good and take an interest in every student, and stays involved in the school community. The HCSTA Teacher of the Year Committee screens nominees based on letters of recommendation collected from colleagues, parents and students. Nominees must have more than five years of exceptional service to the district, active involvement in the Hilton community, and have made a substantial impact on the lives of their students and colleagues. Prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary (never known to fail) Oh most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel. Fruitful Vine, Splendor of Heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin assist me in my necessity, Oh, Star of the Sea, hear me and show me herein you are my mother, of Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth. I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in my necessity (make request). There are none that can withstand your power. Oh Mary conceived without sin, pray for us those who have recourse to Thee (3 Times). Holy Mary I place this cause in your hands (3 times). Say this prayer for 3 consecutive days. You must publish it and it will be granted to you, Thank you Blessed Mother, you never fail your children! G.L.

Gross Utility Tax in Spencerport doesn’t make it to vote Following a public hearing on September 2, Spencerport Village Board members decided not to bring a proposed Gross Utility Tax to a vote. Mayor Gary Penders says the motion was brought to the floor but there was no second, meaning the proposal died on the floor and will not move forward. “We listened to what people said,” Penders says, and explains that residents voiced many valid concerns over the tax, which would have meant about a one percent increase in utility bills for utilities sold within the Village of Spencerport. Those who spoke said they would rather the village raise property taxes if it needs to increase revenue, because they can claim their village taxes on their income tax, Penders says. Others felt homeowners with high-end, new, energy efficient homes would not be hit as hard as those with older homes which might not be as energy
Quality To The Core
efficient, and local churches would also be hurt by the new tax. Penders said the village looked into imposing the tax to bring revenue to the village in the light of the constraints of the state tax cap. Under the formula which governs the cap, the village is facing a zero percent tax increase. “There’s no wiggle room to raise taxes, so we will look into other ways to get revenue for the village,” he notes. Despite the challenges, it is important to stay within the tax cap, which has been extended for another four years, Penders said, because if the village can stay within the tax cap for two years, “we don’t have to for the next two years.” He says the village might consider other options for expenses like garbage disposal. “We will continue to streamline our budget and explore other avenues to bring revenue to the village,” he says.

Every year the Clarkson Historical Society hosts its Clarkson Classic 5K Run/ Walk to benefit the society as well as the community. This year, in order to coincide with the Clarkson Good Neighbor Days Festival, the race changed its usual Saturday morning start time to Friday evening, August 14. This change may have contributed to the lower than normal turnout, but those 93 people that did participate gave such a positive feedback. Male winner was Alec Andrews, age 15, with a time of 17:41 and the female winner was Autumn Albrecht, age 18, with a time of 20:00. The Kids Fun Run followed the race, including fourteen children ranging in age from 3 to 10. The kids ran a .3k (approximately ¼ quarter mile) around Hafner Park. They all received bib numbers to wear and ribbons for completing the course. Since completing The Historical Clarkson Academy project, the building acts as a meeting place for the CHS and is avail-
able for other types of meetings and functions. More importantly, the Brockport School District sends fourth graders to visit for a lesson on vital educational practices taught in the past. For the past two years, the CHS has also offered a summer camp in August for school age children, which taught them cursive writing and other historical lessons. The Clarkson Classic 5K has become an annual event that continues to bring camaraderie, good will, and improvement to the community. Special thanks to the Town of Clarkson, the Highway Department, Monroe County Sheriff ’s Department, the volunteers, the participants, spectators, and most importantly, the sponsors as listed: Agape Physical Therapy, Martin Farms, Monarch Landscaping, Tender Loving Family Care, Sara’s Garden Center, U of R West, Big Time Service, Spurr Chevrolet, Five Star Bank, Clarkson Veterinary Hospital, Tops, Kirby’s, and Wegmans. New patio for volunteer fire fighters Volunteer firefighters in the Hamlin Morton Walker district received a new outdoor patio at their fire hall thanks to local company, Mulcahy’s Landscape and Design. Owner and former volunteer fire fighter Kevin J. Mulcahy wanted to give back and say thank you to the men and women who help keep the community he grew up in safe. “These brave firefighters spend countless hours away from their home and families, volunteering their time and risking their lives to help others without being compensated,” stated Mulcahy. “Giving them a new outdoor patio where they can gather, rejuvenate, host events, and enjoy fresh air during long hours at the fire house was the least we could do.” Mulcahy organized the project that includes donations from Nicolock Paving Stones and Retaining Walls and Miller Brick. The Morton Fire Company founded in 1930, merged into the Hamlin Morton Walker Fire District in 2013, and now has over 100 volunteers dedicated to serving their community. The fire district recently completed significant renovations as a result of a consolidation, displacing firefighters from their “home” for quite some time. Upon conclusion of renovations, they noticed something was missing that would help make their new home complete. “There wasn’t a place for members to be outside, enjoy the nice weather and be visible to the community at the same time,” stated Ken Keirn, Fire Chief of the Hamlin Morton Walker Fire District. “This patio will help increase the morale of our
firefighters significantly and provides comforts of home that help make hanging at the fire station a little more enjoyable, but more importantly it will help our community. Having responders at the fire station will drastically reduce response times when someone calls 911.” The Hamlin Morton Walker Fire District will celebrate their new home with an open house during fire prevention week on October 4. Quilter’s challenge for Banned Book Week The Ogden Farmers’ Library invites all quilters and fabric artists to submit a small wall hanging depicting a banned or challenged book of choice. Create a representation of the title, depict a scene from the book, or use an inspirational word or theme. Do not copy images from book, as these are copyrighted. Bring quilts to the library by September 24 so they can be displayed during Banned Book Week, September 27 through October 3. The library is located at 269 Ogden Center Road, Spencerport. ACTIVE MARKETING It takes a lot more than a "For Sale" sign in the front yard, a Multiple Listing entry, and an occasional ad in the classifieds to get a listing sold. Be sure to discuss the details of the marketing plan with the Realtors you interview about selling your home. Realtors who provide high quality service will usually have a written marketing plan tailored to fit your home and your individual needs. A good marketing plan begins with pricing the home well, and exposing your home to as many real estate professionals and qualified buyers as possible. The agent's job is to get buyers through your front door; your job is to ensure that the buyers like what they see. A top agent can advise you about how to enhance your home's presentation. There are differences in the marketing approaches among companies and individual agents, so request a written plan for a clear idea of what you can expect of your agent.
