The Original Zarpentine Farms, a business built on nearly 200 years of family farming

by Barbara Burke Zarpentine Farms, located at 163 Burritt Road, Hilton resides on 98 acres of land which holds almost 200 years of family farming history. Owner Ron Zarpentine has been working on the farm for over 50 years, “It’s in my heart and in my blood. My dad put me on a tractor at three years old,” Ron says, “And I still just love it.”

The Original Zarpentine Farm Market is open 7 days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., selling the freshest in-season fruits and vegetables, baked goods, maple syrup and honey. Apples, pears, cabbage, tomatoes, several varieties of squash, cucumbers, red and white potatoes, onions, sweet corn, peppers fill the shelves this fall season. “We sell what we grow, 95 percent of the produce we sell on this farm we grow on this farm to support our family farm,” Ron says.

Apples and fresh-pressed sweet apple cider are fall favorites at Zarpentines. Starting in early September, and available as they ripen, 18 varieties of A#1 fancy apples are featured at prices starting at less than 40¢ a pound when purchased by the bushel.

“We are open all year round and have apples available through the winter months because we have our own cold storage right here on the farm,” Ron Zarpentine says.

Often, even from the parking lot, shoppers can smell the tantalizing aroma of baking specialties being prepared on-site, such as Original Zarpentine Farm’s famous Apple Fritters that are available glazed, cinnamon and plain.

“The Apple Fritters are what many people come to our

bakery for. Customers tell me they are so tasty and that the full flavor of the apples comes through.

It is true we use lots of fresh, diced apples in our fritters,” Ron says.

The bakery is also known for its fry cakes available plain, cinnamon sugar, marble glaze, regular Zarpentine’s frycakes, available glazed, chocolate and in plain, cinnamon sugar, marble chocolate sugar varieties, glaze, regular glazed, chocolate and they have 16 varieties and chocolate sugar varieties. of fresh baked pies to choose -- several variations of apple, as well as peach, cherry, pecan, pumpkin.

Many people know about the Original Zarpentine Farm because they have traveled the Corn Maize. This fun fall activity celebrates its 15th anniversary this year and is designed over 20 acres with seven miles of walking trails.

A dozen or so helpers and security guards are stationed around the maze trails there to guide visitors with directions, assist if a quick exit is needed, answer general questions, and participate in token finding competition that visitors can compete in during their walk through the corn rows. A prize is awarded upon completion. This year’s Zarpentine Corn Maize design is Pac-Man. “We have a 40 x 50 ft. ticket booth where people can enjoy some refreshments, sit, relax, have some food and a beverage

This year, Zarpentine Farm celebrates the 15th anniversary of its frequently traveled corn maze. The maze sits across 20 acres with seven miles of walking trails.

Zarpentine Farm carries 18 varieties of A#1 fancy apples. and just enjoy the farm while they wait for others to complete the maze. We also have some retro video games for visitors to play. We have Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man and Donkey Kong,” Ron says.

Zarpentine’s also has a corn box where kids six years old and under can play, as well as a playground with slides and swings for young families to enjoy. They have a Corn Cannon where visitors compete to shoot an ear of corn over 500 ft. to try to get it into a barrel. Prizes include $5 for getting the ear of corn into the large barrel and a $50 prize for the small barrel.

Ron is the host for Zarpentine’s Wagon Ride Tour, which is 25-30 minute excursion across the entire farm. Ron tells the history of the farm and points out the interesting aspects of life on a family farm across the years. A visit to the maple grove where they tap the trees in the spring to produce their own maple syrup is included in the ride.

“We do our wagon rides during daylight hours only. We aren’t out to scare anybody; we are a family friendly farm.

People ask me if I ever stop talking, I laugh and tell them ‘no.’ I just love to share the history of our farm and what I know about farming,” Ron says.

The Wagon Ride Farm Tour is available on Saturdays from 11a.m. to sundown and on Sundays 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

There are no wagon tours on Fridays.

Zarpentine’s Famous Corn Maize opened for the season on Friday, September 18. Maize hours are Fridays 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturdays 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sundays 11a. m. to 5 p.m.

After January 1, 2016, watch for the return of Zarpentine Farms famous “All You Can Eat Pancake Breakfast,” where they will celebrate their 11th year of serving an Old Fashioned, Homemade Breakfast to families and friends.

Public informational meeting and drop-in session A public drop-in session will take place at Greece Town Hall in Community Rooms A and B, from 4 to 7 p.m., on Tuesday, September 22 to review inventory information and gather public comments on the Hojack Trail Feasibility Study.

The study, funded by the Genesee Transportation Council, is a collaborative effort by the Towns of Greece and Parma and the Village of Hilton, that will evaluate the possibility of establishing a multi-use trail on the former Hojack rail corridor, extend-

ing from the NYS Route 390 Bike Path in Greece to Canning Street in Hilton.

The drop-in session will give residents of all three communities an opportunity to provide input on the study and discuss the project with the advisory committee, project consultants, and representatives from Greece, Parma, and Hilton.

BHS adds Homecoming Festival to this year’s parade celebration This year’s Brockport High School parade will take place on Friday, September 25 at 5:30 p.m., beginning at the Oliver Middle School and ending at Brockport High School. The parade is shorter but the celebration is bigger.

A new BHS Homecoming Festival will follow after the parade this year. All community organizations and businesses are invited to come together on the Brockport Central School District campus and celebrate. Festival participants have the opportunity to set up in their own area and let the rest of the community know what they have to offer.

During the festival, attendants can visit local vendors’ stations, both inside and

outside of BHS. A Food Truck Rodeo will provide many great eating opportunities, including J&S Fried Dough, Brick-NMotor, Lugia’s Ice Cream, The Brunch Box, Stingray Sushifusion, and Macarollin. Carnival games will be available for children’s entertainment and a local DJ will keep the tunes spinning all throughout the festival.

People can join the parade, enjoy the selection provided by the Food Truck Rodeo, talk with local business owners, enjoy some carnival games and then move on to the Dahn Walrath Stadium for the Homecoming game to cheer on the Brockport Varsity Football team, beginning at 7 p.m.

First annual Pineway Ponds 5K On Saturday, September 26, over 60 runners and walkers will participate in the first annual Pineway Ponds 5K, presented by the Ogden Parks and Recreation Department and the Kiwanis Club of Spencerport. This year’s participants include runners and walkers of all ages, including first time 5K runners, seasoned distance runners, and leisurely walkers.

Volunteers will be stationed at every corner, and the Special Police of the Ogden Police Department will assist with traffic control, where needed.

the race will begin at 8:30 a.m., and completion anticipated by 9:45 a.m. Please pay close attention to the pedestrians that will be sharing the following roads: Park Road, North Union Street between Pineway Ponds Park and Canal Road, Canal Road from Trimmer Road Bridge to Union Street, Martha Street, Amity Street, Evergreen Street, West Avenue and Trimmer Road.

Hilton CSD names schoolrelated professional of the year Bianca Quester, Learning Support Services secretary for the Hilton Central School District, was named School-Related Professional (SRP) of the Year at the staff convocation at Hilton High School on September 3.

For almost 20 years, Quester has worked in many capacities throughout the district, including health aide, office clerk and her current position, which she’s held for over 16 years. Her coworkers describe Bianca as “amazing, reliable and invaluable.” She is also described as someone who makes every person feel that his or her question is a priority. “The LSS office functions efficiently and with an extremely high level of compliance with special education regulations. This would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of Bianca,” said one coworker.

Special education teachers, psychologists and many other service providers rely on Quester’s precise and accurate communication so that they can prepare and execute the steps required to maintain compliance with the State Education Department regulations that govern special education.

Journey of Hope Christian Cancer Support Group invites public for therapy of the soul When a person suffers an injury, becomes ill, or requires surgery, there arises a potential need for physical therapy. This particular type of therapy provides healing, strengthening, restoration, and ability to those physical areas affected.

However, when one must face the reality of cancer, an additional therapy becomes necessary - spiritual therapy. Partnering with Esther Gillie (Director of Library Services at RWC; D.Min. student at NES; and cancer survivor), the Journey of Hope Cancer Support Group explores scriptural and formative ways to provide therapy for the soul.

Certain exclusions apply, based on availability.

The Journey of Hope Christian Cancer Support Group will meet on Wednesday, September 23, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Friendship Center at Pearce Church. Journey of Hope provides support for anyone who has been touched by cancer - including cancer patients, their friends and family members. This meeting intends to offer strength, encouragement and guidance through faith in Christ.
