Hilton Marching Band donates piece of history back to local family
(L-r) Hilton Cadet Marching Band Director Matthew Nordhausen, Suzanne and Carl Pilon with their children, and drum majors Josh Mooney and Ellie Steinmetz with the piece of fence donated back to the Pilon family. Provided photo.
A piece of history is now displayed on the front yard of the Pilon family home on West Avenue thanks to the Hilton Cadet Marching Band. Last summer, during the family’s home renovation project, a carriage house that was over 100 years old was torn down. At the same time, the Marching Band was in the beginning stages of developing its fall 2014 competitive field show, “1776: Revolution & Triumph!” “My staff, parent helpers and I came up with the idea of using colonial era, frontier-style fences as props in our show,” said Matthew Nordhausen, Marching Band director. “It was at that time that several of our parents suggested using the wood from the Pilon’s carriage house. And the family was more than happy to donate the wood to the marching band.” With their fall competitive field show season complete, the band de-
cided it would be a nice gesture to offer one of the fences back to the Pilon family for their landscaping so they could still have part of the carriage house on their property. On November 26, Nordhausen, Don Green and Doug Wall, the two parents who made the fences, and drum majors Ellie Steinmetz and Josh Mooney presented the fence, along with a framed picture of the fences being used in one of their competitions and a thank you letter to the Pilon family. “I see the stockades and I feel like the family is part of the band now,” said Carl Pilon. The Pilon Family recently made a video to thank everyone who worked on the renovation project for their home. It can be seen at http://youtu. be/jnBKUBlm00s. Provided information

Strong West’s new Orthopaedics space is set to open before Christmas. The facility is located in the building formerly occupied by the childcare center on the north side of the Brockport Strong West campus next to the Beikirch Care Center. Former Lakeside ortho surgeon Dr. Jonathan Gable and his staff will begin seeing patients December 22, Strong West officials say. Dr. Gable’s office has been located in the main Strong West building. In addition to orthopaedics, O’Donovan says the 6,500 square foot state-ofthe-art facility will include on-site x-ray and UR Medicine’s Sports and Spine Rehabilitation, staffed by spine specialists Dr. David

The specialists in sports and spine rehab have “expertise in returning patients to a high level of activity,” O’Donovan explains. The new facility will also allow Dr. Gable to expand his ortho practice. “It will be more conducive to the patients he treats,” O’Donovan notes, “there is access with a parking lot and (provides for) continuity of care.” Dr. Gable relocated to Greece following the closing of Lakeside, but returned when Strong West opened. His staff includes his nurse, Pam Toman and secretary Chris Pratt, both of whom were part of his staff at Lakeside and who also reside in Brockport. With the opening of the Ortho/Rehab facility, Strong West will be able to provide the entire cycle of care from the ED to the Ambulatory Surgical Center to ortho and rehab, “.... under one umbrella,” O’Donovan says. “We are excited to be able to offer (these services) to the Brockport community.” O’Donovan gave the Suburban News/The Herald a tour of the facili-

Stetson Club thanks community for Holiday of Lights Parade success We had another very successful Holiday of Lights Parade this year, with over 30 entries in this year’s parade and another large crowd to view the event. We appreciate the support from the community but we do not do this without a lot of help. I would like to thank the following sponsors: The Greater Brockport Chamber of Commerce, Fowler’s Funeral Home, Westside News Inc., Brockport Merchant’s Association, Vandervort Tree Service, Smarty Pants, Reliant Community Credit Union, Danielle Windus-Cook Properties LLC, UR Medicine/Strong West, Encore Events@Rochesterdj. com, Game Players Unlimited and The Village of Brockport. I also want to thank the Brockport Fire Police, The Brockport DPW, Rachael Blair and her crew who got all the particapants lined up and on the road in the right order. Thank you as well to our team of Judges. Once again Jeremy Newman and Stacey Pensgen were kind enough to come out and emcee the parade. Every year we hope that people are still interested

enough in Holiday of Lights Parade to come out. This year was very cold but a large crowd once again showed up. For that we are very grateful. The Grand Prize winner again this year was the Hamlin Fire Dept. Other winners were the Hamlin Dog Shelter (best non-profit). A tie for most creative went to Bentley Brothers and the Brockport DPW and Santa’s Pick was the marching group of the Kendall Lawn Chair Ladies. On a side note, the Brockport Methodist Church, on their own, opened their doors so that people could come in, get warm, use the restrooms and be treated to free hot chocolate and pop corn. I am sure there were many thankful people for that kindness. Again thank you to all who participated, helped out and attended. We are looking forward to next year’s parade on December 6, 2015. Start making your plans to either attend or be a part of this holiday tradition. Brian Winant, President/Stetson Club

since been used as a way to refer to anyone’s hand written signature, as in “Put your John Hancock right here,” when signing a document or contract. The Historical Society has been dedicated to teaching cursive to the more than 400 elementary school students who have visited their restored Academy building over the past two years. They have found that the children, and many of their parents and teachers have been enthused about this opportunity for them to learn to write and perfect their cursive and their signatures in particular. Research has shown that writing in cursive improves thinking and fine motor skills in a way that no other form of writing is able to do. Provided information

MOMS Club® hosts Brockport 2014 Holiday Giftaway
st. eLIZabeth ann seton CathoLIC ChurCh
The MOMS Club® of Brockport’s Eighth Annual Holiday Giftaway distributed toys to 1,135 children this year. The Giftaway also donated toys to Goodwill. Organizer Carol Ann Pittman began the Giftaway in 2007 when she read a letter sent to “The Flylady” (aka Marla Cilley) who runs the home organizing website www. flylady.net. The Flylady shares tips on how to manage your house and your life, without getting overwhelmed in the process. She is a proponent of decluttering, and “blessing others” with unused items in the home. A fan of her website wrote a testimonial letter about an event she was a part of in her hometown of Austin, TX. “Lisa from Austin” created an event that allowed family members to give away their gently used toys for free. Pittman was inspired by Lisa and began the Giftaway as a way to teach her children about recycling and community service. She asked MOMS Club® members and their children to look through their toys and select any they were no longer using and donate them to the Giftaway. Any family in the area could then choose from the large selection of gently used, good condition gifts. No income or personal information was asked, insuring complete privacy for all participants. No appointments were necessary. The MOMS Club® of Brockport gave toys to children from 22 families that year. This year, toys went to over 300 families. The event has taught the chapter’s children the spirit of giving and recycling. Many MOMS Club® children help set up, run, and clean up before, during and after the Giftaway every year. The MOMS Club® of Brockport thanks those who helped the 2014 Giftaway, particularly Java Junction, the Sweden/Clarkson Community Center, The Seymour Library, The College at Brockport Cooper Hall Judo Dojo, and the members and children of the MOMS Club® of Brockport. Mark’s Pizzeria, and Burrito Fresco contributed food; and Roseessentials offered free consultations. The Brockport Elk’s Lodge receives special thanks for their help. MATTERS OF SURVIVAL The famous Thomas Mann quote, “A man’s dying is more the survivors’ affair than his own,” perceptively suggests that those dealing with the loss of a loved one face considerable challenges. While remaining family members and friends may share their grief, only one person has the ability to lessen the financial and logistical responsibilities that death often imposes. Only the departed have it in their power to lighten the load of responsibility on their survivors by planning for their own funerals and burials (or cremation) ahead of time. Doing so shifts the considerable responsibility of making important decisions under great stress from
family members to the person who best knows what is most essential and desirable. Advance funeral planning has been called “a sincere act of love” because it can help ease an emotional burden from those you love. By recording your wishes, you help guide your survivors, and allow them to spend time supporting each other instead of worrying about what you would have wanted. For more information about the funeral services we offer, please call THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME at 585-392-7100. Located at 735 East Avenue, we are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Family owned and trusted since 1976.

Eagles rebound to defeat Tigers in boys basketball by Warren Kozireski After sleepwalking through much of the first quarter and trailing 11-2, Kendall dominated the offensive and defensive boards in a come-from-behind 49-39 win over visiting Lyndonville in boys basketball. Down 14-6 after the first quarter, Eagles junior Colton Breslawski got the offense untracked with a three-pointer to open the second stanza. Senior Will Condo and junior Jacob Ramsdell combined for eight more points with Condo hitting on a break to tie the game 19-19 just prior to halftime. Kendall took their first lead on a Condo free throw to open the third quarter and never looked back outscoring the Tigers 16-10 over the quarter. The defense then took over in the fourth quarter to allow Lyndonville only ten more points over the eight minutes and Mookie Nauden scored on a put-back and a jumper to seal the game. “We wanted to go man-to-man, but we had match-up problems so changing to the two-three zone was a key,” said Kendall head coach Justin Laureano. “With Evan Gaesser out, he spreads the floor for us which allows Condo and Mook (Nauden) to drive to the net. We had to find another way to win today.” Condo led the Eagles with 18 points and added six rebound and three steals. Nauden had a team-high 12 rebounds to go with the same number of points while Ramsdell had 12 points, nine rebounds and four blocks. Breslawski added five points and six rebounds to help Kendall improve to 4-1. The team is off for the holiday until January 7 when they host Alexander.

SUNY Oswego honors soccer All-American SUNY Oswego recently honored the late Edward Zorn, class of 1963, of Hamlin, with induction into the college’s Athletic Hall of Fame. Standout soccer player Zorn -- the only posthumous honoree -- officially was inducted with six fellow alumni into the Hall of Fame during ceremonies on campus. Zorn is one of only three men’s soccer All-Americans at Oswego, collecting Honorable Mention in 1962. During his senior season, Zorn was also named First Team All-State and First Team All-SUNYAC. Zorn was the second-straight Laker to earn All-America honors; as the program’s first-ever All-American, Bob Thole, class of 1962, earned his recognition in 1961. After his time at Oswego, Zorn taught industrial arts while coaching varsity soccer at Greece Olympia High School in Rochester. He spent his free time growing, promoting and advancing youth soccer in Hamlin. Tracie DiFlorio, Zorn’s daughter, accepted his Hall of Fame plaque.
