Hilton Marching Band donates piece of history back to local family

(L-r) Hilton Cadet Marching Band Director Matthew Nordhausen, Suzanne and Carl Pilon with their children, and drum majors Josh Mooney and Ellie Steinmetz with the piece of fence donated back to the Pilon family. Provided photo.

A piece of history is now displayed on the front yard of the Pilon family home on West Avenue thanks to the Hilton Cadet Marching Band. Last summer, during the family’s home renovation project, a carriage house that was over 100 years old was torn down. At the same time, the Marching Band was in the beginning stages of developing its fall 2014 competitive field show, “1776: Revolution & Triumph!” “My staff, parent helpers and I came up with the idea of using colonial era, frontier-style fences as props in our show,” said Matthew Nordhausen, Marching Band director. “It was at that time that several of our parents suggested using the wood from the Pilon’s carriage house. And the family was more than happy to donate the wood to the marching band.” With their fall competitive field show season complete, the band de-

cided it would be a nice gesture to offer one of the fences back to the Pilon family for their landscaping so they could still have part of the carriage house on their property. On November 26, Nordhausen, Don Green and Doug Wall, the two parents who made the fences, and drum majors Ellie Steinmetz and Josh Mooney presented the fence, along with a framed picture of the fences being used in one of their competitions and a thank you letter to the Pilon family. “I see the stockades and I feel like the family is part of the band now,” said Carl Pilon. The Pilon Family recently made a video to thank everyone who worked on the renovation project for their home. It can be seen at http://youtu. be/jnBKUBlm00s. Provided information

center on the north side of the Brockport Strong West campus next to the Beikirch Care Center. Former Lakeside ortho surgeon Dr. Jonathan Gable and his staff will begin seeing patients December 22, Strong West officials say. Dr. Gable’s office has been located in the main Strong West building. In addition to orthopaedics, O’Donovan says the 6,500 square foot state-ofthe-art facility will include on-site x-ray and UR Medicine’s Sports and Spine Rehabilitation, staffed by spine specialists Dr. David Speach and Dr. John Orsini, who also saw patients at the former Lakeside Hospital. The specialists in sports and spine rehab have “expertise in returning patients to a high level of activity,” O’Donovan explains. The new facility will also allow Dr. Gable to expand his ortho practice. “It will be more conducive to the patients he treats,” O’Donovan notes, “there is

access with a parking lot and (provides for) continuity of care.” Dr. Gable relocated to Greece following the closing of Lakeside, but returned when Strong West opened. His staff includes his nurse, Pam Toman and secretary Chris Pratt, both of whom were part of his staff at Lakeside and who also reside in Brockport. With the opening of the Ortho/Rehab facility, Strong West will be able to provide the entire cycle of care from the ED to the Ambulatory Surgical Center to ortho and rehab, “.... under one umbrella,” O’Donovan says. “We are excited to be able to offer (these services) to the Brockport community.”

Happy Holidays

O’Donovan gave the Suburban News/The Herald a tour of the facility in early December while construction crews were hard at work completing renovations. The rehab side includes four open treatment areas as well as two private treatment rooms and will open after the first of the year. The ortho side includes eight exam rooms and one procedure room in addition to the on-site x-ray. The original footprint of

the building was retained, while the entire interior was gutted, O’Donovan says, noting the facility has many windows, “... it’s very light,” he says, “it’s not in the bowels of a hospital - the look is much more modern.” “There are now more than 100 employees at Strong West and more than half are former Lakeside employees,” O’Donovan adds. “We’ve followed through on our commitment.”

The Clarkson Historical Society will be celebrating National Handwriting Day for the first time in January with a Handwriting Contest. The contest will be open to everyone in the following three categories. Students in grades 4-5, grades 6,7 and 8, and grades 9-12 with small cash prizes awarded to the top three winners in each category. Look for rules and entry information about this event in the January 4 edition of this newspaper. The Historical Society has been dedicated to teaching cursive to the more than 400 elementary school students

who have visited their restored Academy building over the past two years. They have found that the children, and many of their parents and teachers have been enthused about this opportunity for them to learn to write and perfect their cursive and their signatures in particular. Research has shown that writing in cursive improves thinking and fine motor skills in a way that no other form of writing is able to do. Provided information

SUNY Oswego honors soccer All-American SUNY Oswego recently honored the late Edward Zorn, class of 1963, of Hamlin, with induction into the college’s Athletic Hall of Fame. Standout soccer player Zorn -- the only posthumous honoree -- officially was inducted with six fellow alumni into the Hall of Fame during ceremonies on campus. Zorn is one of only three men’s soccer All-Americans at Oswego, collecting Honorable Mention in 1962. During his senior season, Zorn was also named First Team All-State and First Team All-SUNYAC. Zorn was the second-straight Laker to earn All-America honors; as the program’s first-ever All-American, Bob Thole, class of 1962, earned his recognition in 1961.

Prayer To The Blessed Virgin Mary (Never known to fail)

Oh most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin assist me in my necessity. Oh Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein, you are my mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in my necessity. (Make request). There are none that can withstand your power. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to Thee (3X). Holy Mother, I place this prayer in your hands (3X). Say this prayer for 3 consecutive days and then you must publish it, and it will be granted to you. Gratefully, A.M.

Hilton Education Foundation sponsors “Pigs on Parade  The Hilton Education Foundation’s piggy banks are hungry so the Hilton community’s children don’t have to be. Be on the lookout for 13 piggy banks placed in businesses throughout Hilton, then feed them with your spare change. In January, the pigs will be picked up and 100 percent of the money collected will be donated to the Cadet Cupboard, which provides food during school breaks for children in need. The piggy banks will be auctioned off during the Hilton Education Foundation Comedy Night Under the Stars on Saturday, Jan. 24 at Deerfield Country Club. Look for more details coming soon. The banks were painted, each with a different design, by Hilton High School

art students, and are at the following locations: Apple Country Veterinary Hospital, 516 North Ave.; Arlington Restaurant, 14 Main St.; Carmestro’s Restaurant, 50 Canning St.; Heinrich Collision, 60 Gorton Ave.; Hilton Family Pharmacy, 32 Main St.; Hilton NAPA Auto Parts, 109 Lake Ave.; Hovey Square Liquor, 11 Hovey Square; Jose Joe’s, 24 Main St.; Summit Federal Credit Union, 41 Hovey Square; The Coffee Corner, 32 Main St.; and at Senator Joseph Robach’s Office, 2300 W. Ridge Rd. in Greece. For information about the Hilton Education Foundation, visit www.hiltoneducationfoundation.org. Provided information and photo.

Hilton senior Matthew Palmeri paints a piggy bank for the Hilton Education Foundation. The banks are placed throughout the community to raise funds for the Cadet Cupboard, which provides food during school breaks for students in need.

MATTERS OF SURVIVAL The famous Thomas Mann quote, “A man’s dying is more the survivors’ affair than his own,” perceptively suggests that those dealing with the loss of a loved one face considerable challenges. While remaining family members and friends may share their grief, only one person has the ability to lessen the financial and logistical responsibilities that death often imposes. Only the departed have it in their power to lighten the load of responsibility on their survivors by planning for their own funerals and burials (or cremation) ahead of time. Doing so shifts the considerable responsibility of making important decisions under great stress from

family members to the person who best knows what is most essential and desirable. Advance funeral planning has been called “a sincere act of love” because it can help ease an emotional burden from those you love. By recording your wishes, you help guide your survivors, and allow them to spend time supporting each other instead of worrying about what you would have wanted. For more information about the funeral services we offer, please call THOMAS E. BURGER FUNERAL HOME at 585-392-7100. Located at 735 East Avenue, we are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Family owned and trusted since 1976.

How to Lock in Loan Rates When mortgage rates begin to rise, locking in your loan rate is a serious issue for both new homebuyers and homeowners who want to refinance. If you understand what rate locks are and how they work, you'll be better prepared to evaluate your options. While you're applying for a mortgage loan, interest rates will rise and fall. If you want assurance that the interest rate on your loan won't increase while you're waiting for approval, ask for a rate lock. A conventional rate lock is a guarantee from the lender that your mortgage will carry a particular interest rate, with specific, predetermined points and costs. The interest rate is locked in for a specified period of time. When you call a lender for a rate quote, be sure to ask how long that rate will last for. Rate locks make sense if interest rates are on the upswing, and you are not comfortable with higher monthly payments.
