Audrey Clarke of Churchville has been named to the Elmira College dean’s list for the Winter 2017 Term. Full-time students who achieve a GPA of 3.6 or higher at the end of any Term I or Term II are placed on the dean’s list at the college. Joseph Gutberlet, a Television-Radio major at Ithaca College’s Roy H. Park School of Communications and North Chili native, was inducted into Lambda Pi Eta, the honor society of the National Association of Communication, on April 18. Elizabeth Patanella of Churchville, was recognized as a Cowles Honor Scholar at the Elmira College Academic Honors and Student Recognition Celebration, held Thursday, March 30, in Gibson Theatre. The honor is presented to seniors who have earned a GPA of 3.6 or above and, thus far, have sustained this academic achievement throughout their Elmira College career. This honor is named for the college’s first president, Augustus Cowles. David Nundy of Churchville was named World Ambassador for a Freshman Living Learning Communtiy at UAlbany. Living-Learning Communities are freshmen communities where students who share interests can take classes together and live in the same hall. World Ambassadors are rising sophomores who have completed a year in one of the University at Albany’s Living-Learning Communities (L-LCs) and demonstrated leadership within their communities. World Ambassadors have strong leadership skills, excellent interpersonal skills, and a track record of academic success. World Ambassadors must be nominated by the L-LC faculty and are then selected and trained by Student Engagement. They provide leadership and transitional assistance to new freshmen who are entering Living-Learning Communities. Michael Yodice, a Biology BA major from Hilton, was inducted into the Siena College Alpha Kappa Alpha Honor Society. Alpha Kappa Alpha members are students who have achieved academic excellence throughout their college years. They have also demonstrated an awareness of the problems facing society and a sincere concern for others. AKA members have contributed in a special way to Siena and to the broader community by active participation in extracurricular activities. In other words, these students embody the Franciscan traditions that are the foundation of every Siena graduate’s education. They have been selected upon the recommendation of a select committee of faculty, students and administrators.
Harald Juergens of Hilton was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Juergens was initiated at United States Military Academy. Phi Kappa Phi membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction. Nazareth College awarded the Community Service Award to Toni Battista of Brockport, during the recent President’s Civic Engagement Awards ceremony. The Community Service Award recognizes students who have demonstrated a commitment to service, either to the Nazareth College community or the greater community at large. Tobias Mahan, son of Jenifer Mahan and Timothy Mahan, was among the nearly 1000 graduates honored at Michigan Technological University’s spring commencement held on the Houghton, Michigan campous on April 29. Tobias received his master of science in biomedical engineering Rochester Institute of Technology honored 102 students whose academic and personal achievements have made them this year’s Outstanding Undergraduate Scholars. •Lydia Hays of Spencerport, daughter of Bonnie Hays and Rex Hays of Spencerport, is a fifth-year student in the computer engineering program in RIT’s Kate Gleason College of Engineering. •Ryan Patalano of Rochester is a fifthyear student in the chemical engineering program in RIT’s Kate Gleason College of Engineering. The awards, a bronze medallion, were given in ceremonies on April 6 to those students who have met the scholarship criteria -- a minimum GPA of 3.85; completion of more than two-thirds of the credit hours required for a bachelor’s degree and demonstrated community engagement, such as creative work, serve on student committees, civic activities, employment or independent research. Lauren Hughes, a Hilton native studying psychology at Ithaca College, was inducted into the Tau Sigma National Honor Society, an academic honor society designed specifically to “recognize and promote the academic excellence and involvement of transfer students.”
Hannah Lenz of Hamlin has been inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges at Finger Lakes Community College. Phi Theta Kappa promotes scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship. FLCC’s chapter, Alpha Epsilon Chi, was chartered in 1981 and provides leadership, service and scholarship opportunities for members. Membership requires completion of 15 hours of associate degree coursework and a GPA of 3.5. Phi Theta Kappa members also serve as campus ambassadors. Jessica Burt of Hamlin received the Goffman Award, for a first-year student leader in academic and community activities from RIT’s Department of Criminal Justice and Center for Public Safety Initiatves. The State University of New York at Potsdam recognized more than 1,000 candidates for graduation during the College’s 2017 Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 20. Todd Smith, son of Tim and Heather Smith, of Spencerport, has been named as a 2017 Brine National High School Lacrosse All-American and has been selected to represent the State of New York at the National Lacrosse Classic to be held July 18 through 21, 2017 in Richmond, Virginia at the River City Sportsplex. Toddis a freshman at Spencerport High School. The National Lacrosse Classic is the first-of-its-kind lacrosse experience created to provide lacrosse athletes with a competitive process to benchmark their skills and athleticism, qualify for selection to represent their State in a national tournament and gain recognition by competing in front of NCAA lacrosse coaches from every division.

in the service Major General Anthony P. German, the Adjutant General of New York, announced the recent service accomplishment of members of the New York Army National Guard in recognition of their initial commitment to serve community, state and nation. The newest Citizen Soldiers to complete Army basic combat training and advanced individual training were welcomed to their units during a New York Army National Guard battle handoff ceremony. The New York Army National Guard welcomed 75 new Soldiers to their units during the April 9 ceremonies around the state, including the following: •Pfc. Dylan Abraham from Rochester, was formally welcomed into the Company C, 427th Brigade Support Battalion during a transition ceremony at the Patriot Way Armory in Rochester. •Pvt. Manuel Cintron from Rochester, was formally welcomed into the Company A, 427th Brigade Support Battalion during a transition ceremony at the Patriot Way Armory in Rochester. The ceremony marks their completion of the National Guard Recruit Sustainment Program, a preparatory training program that provides new recruits with training, lessons and skills to excel at their initial military training. The soldiers will now embark on their traditional National Guard service to state and nation as part-time Citizen Soldiers. Major General Anthony P. German, the Adjutant General for the State of New York, announced the promotion of members of the New York Army National Guard in recognition of their capability for additional responsibility and leadership: •Jamie Gilbert of Churchville, and assigned to the 222nd Military Police Company received a promotion to the rank of Sergeant. •Jason Petroske of Rochester, and assigned to the Headquarters and Service Company, 642nd Support Battalion received a promotion to the rank of Specialist. Army National Guard promotions are based on overall performance, attitude, leadership ability and development potential. These promotions additionally recognize the best qualified Soldiers and attract and retain the highest caliber Citizen Soldiers for a career in the New York Army National Guard. Major General Anthony P. The New York National Guard (New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs) is the state’s executive agency responsible to the Governor for managing New York’s Military Forces, which consists of nearly 20,000 members of the New York Army National Guard, the New York Air National Guard, the New York Naval Militia and the New York Guard.
