Like Violence casts a storm for the sake of artistry by Kiri Patella Ryan Like Violence is a Pop-Punk genre based band comprised of five members from Spencerport. All knowing each other since middle school, they include: lead vocalist, Brittni DiFiore; drummer, Beau Bilinski; lead guitarist, and vocalist Don Rivaldo; guitarist, Joey Vetromile, and bassist and backup vocalist, Dan Belkin. Deriving from the musical influences of similar genre groups such as Blink-182, The Wonder Years, Brand New, Metallica, Counter Parts and The Story So Far, Like Violence describes themselves as falling into their own musical category, separate from Pop-Punk, that they refer to as, “melodic paracore.” The band began in the fall of 2013 when Brittni and Don first started playing together. The initial phase was never all that serious; Brittni made arbitrary appearances to Don’s house where the two of them would spend time covering songs acoustically. “I feel like I was playing with Brit for about a year and decided, ‘let’s get serious about this,’ ” Don explained. When Beau saw Brittni and Don “jamming out” together he decided, “I want in on that.” From there, the two other members soon joined. In pursuit to complete the group, the band used social media to bring in a bassist and an additional guitarist. Lucky for them, the newest members already happened to be long-time friends also from the Spencerport area. “I saw

something on Facebook and jumped on it real quick,” guitarist Joey mentioned. Shortly thereafter, Dan tagged along on the bass and finalized the band’s formation. Once all of the members had come together, they started working on their first two studio singles, “Voices” and “Cameron,” which were released in the spring of 2015. After that, the band released its first EP, “Raised by Wolves.” Since then, Like Violence has appeared in seven stage performances including: three shows at Water Street Music Hall in Rochester; two shows at The Bug Jar in Like Violence performing at RageFest 2015 at Water Street Music Rochester; one house show and Hall in Rochester. Several of the Like Violence will continue to write and produce band members had been involved in previous more music, perform shows and eventually musical projects all throughout high school and conduct small tours on the weekends. The band years after. High school bands included, Suit ‘Em Up, Aunt Ancy and the Bird House and SEGA. Later down the road Beau and Don went on to play in the band Setbacks with other Spencerport natives. “It (Like Violence) is essentially a super group of all of our bands,” Joey explained. Yet before any one of them decided to pick up and learn an instrument, music served as an essential part of their individual lives since the very beginning. Like Violence continues their pursuit to grow as a band in hopes that they could one day obtain strong recognition within the music industry. “I just want to make music that people like,” expressed Beau, “Something that people listen to … when they listen, they think, ‘these guys get me.’ ” “I want to make different music too, instead of all the same old stuff,” Don added. If given the opportunity, the band would love to focus all of their time and energy in music writing it, playing it and performing it, wherever it takes them. “I want to do this band for some sort of period of time and not have to work any other job,” said Don. As for now, each member continues to work separate jobs in order to support their musical endeavors. Although the instant that would allow the Members of Like Violence (from left to right): Beau group to fully support all of their desired ambi-

is currently in the process of writing a second album as well as projecting the idea for a future music video. Like Violence plans to continue playing shows in Rochester and surrounding cities in support of its new EP and hopes to begin touring in early 2016. The band is currently scheduled to perform their next event on Friday, November 27 at the Space Bar in Canandaigua, followed by a holiday show on Monday, December 7 at the Bug Jar in Rochester. Like Violence expresses enormous gratitude towards the Spencerport area for bringing all of its members together. The group also acknowledges all of the parties that have provided their assistance, including: Mike Filipek; Kevin Murphee; Taylor Rambo; Meg Ameden; Beau’s grandmother and former Mayor of Spencerport, the late Joyce Lobene and of course, the fans that support their music. Residents speak out regarding proposed Rite Aid in Ogden by Kristina Gabalski Members of the Ogden Planning Board have set an environmental review process in motion for the Spencerport Mixed Use Center proposed at the southeast corner of Routes 31 and 259 in Ogden. During their November 12 meeting, board members passed a resolution classifying the project as a Type 1 Action, requiring the long form environmental review. The board, while expressing interest in acting as lead agency, will now send out notices to other involved agencies to inquire if they might be interested in lead agency status. Currently, a 14,608 square feet Rite Aid Pharmacy is the only building proposed for the portion of the 33-acre parcel which is closest to the intersection. Eventually, 14 commercial buildings could be housed on the site and will be serviced by public water and public or private sanitary facilities. Timothy O’Brien, project manager at Ellicott Development, discussed the project with the board prior to a public hearing. O’Brien said the plans have been revised to include more foundation plantings and additional islands in the parking lot, which includes 64 parking spaces. He noted trucks with deliveries will enter off Route 31 and exit via Route 259, and described changes to the elevations which include a gabled roof. “We added dormers, including along the back, and a gable roof on the drive-thru,” O’Brien said. Planning Board member Linda DelRegno said members have been concerned with the appearance of the building as it will be located in the Heritage Corridor. “We are satisfied with what they have come up with,” she said regarding changes. “They have met our expectations.” Developers say they foresee using a septic

system for the Rite Aid and then switching to a sanitary sewer as the development expands. Ogden Building Inspector Patrick Smith reported that when the development ties into the village sewer, it would be via Coleman Avenue. Eight trees (between #160-#204 Coleman) would have to be removed, but developers would be required to replant new trees once the sewer work was complete. Town Engineer John Freel expressed concerns over drainage as well as the internal truck traffic pattern. He said large trucks would end up hitting curbs. “You’re gonna have to widen it out,” Freel told O’Brien. Several residents, mainly from the Nichols Street/Union Street area, spoke during the public hearing. Most said the increase in traffic that the Rite Aid would bring is their biggest concern. One resident called the current traffic, “horrendous.” Another called the intersection, “way too busy and too congested,” for the pharmacy. Others questioned the status of the new store now that it has been announced that Walgreens has acquired Rite Aid. “Will we eventually end up with a vacant building?” one resident asked. Timothy O’Brien responded that Walgreens typically phases in changes in name when they acquire pharmacies. Following the public hearing, Planning Board members discussed concerns raised by the Ogden Conservation Board over “segmentation” of the SEQR environmental review. The Conservation Board believes the impact of the entire 33-acre eventual buildout must be considered in the environmental review, not just the Rite Aid building, which is the only building proposed at this point. Planning Board attorney Keith O’Toole composed the resolution regarding the environmental review which Planning Board members passed unanimously.

Village Elementary families enjoy a night of reading fun

Several reading assistance therapy dogs gathered in the Parma Public Library and listened intently as students read them stories during the Village Elementary One School, One Book Family Event in Hilton. Families could also check out the Seneca Park Zoomobile displays that included a live bearded dragon, hedgehog, mallard duck and armadillo. Students won prizes by completing a reading-related scavenger hunt; and the library was on hand to help people sign up for library cards. Students also got crafty by making their own journals and creating fingerprint animal art in the art room. One School, One Book is a program designed to create a shared reading experience within a single elementary school community. Schools choose a chapter book, every family in the school receives a copy, and every family reads that book at home over the course of a single month. This year’s book selection was The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate. The evening event allows the opportunity for families to enjoy activities related to the book and reading together. Canal Road Apartments receive Ogden Planning Board approval by Kristina Gabalski The Canal Road Apartments project proposed for the north side of Canal Road between Upton Avenue and Union Street received preliminary and final approval from the Ogden Planning Board November 12. The project includes the construction of two, eight-unit apartment buildings on slightly more than two acres. The project was criticized by residents during a public hearing regarding concerns over drainage issues and questions over the need for more apartments in the town. Larry Heininger of Marques & Associates appeared before the Board November 12 prior to the vote. He said concerns voiced by the town engineer and Highway Superintendent David Widger have been addressed. “Everything is in a good spot,” Heininger said, and described measures that have been taken to improve drainage. The Ogden Conservation Board agreed, and Highway Superintendent Widger noted it appears the developer has improved drainage at the site. “It will go into a swale and be taken care of when it hits the park,” he said.

At their September 23 meeting, members of the Ogden Town Board approved re-zoning of the parcel from R-1 Residential to MFR - Multi-Family Residential. The apartments will be serviced by public water and public sanitary facilities. The November 12 regular meeting was the last for Planning Board member Marc Robinson, who is resigning. At the beginning of the meeting, Ogden Supervisor Gay Lenhard read a letter of thanks she wrote to Robinson. “It was (a) great disappointment to learn of your necessity to leave the Planning Board,” Lenhard said, and noted Robinson’s experience as a contractor was invaluable over the years. “The town has been a benefactor of your talent and knowledge. The past 17 years have been extremely productive. Your commitment to the Town of Ogden will not go unnoticed,” she said. “I have known Marc for a lot of years,” Lenhard continued. “He has always been there whenever we needed him. We’re going to miss you very, very much. This is a great loss.” “It has been my pleasure,” Robinson told Lenhard.

Hilton CSD residents to vote on Capital Project proposition A Capital Maintenance and Safety Project will be presented to Hilton School District residents in a public vote on Tuesday, December 8. The proposition authorizes the district to make capital improvements in the amount of $2,650,000. This project will have no impact on local property taxes. Revenue will come from available NYS Building Aid, the District Capital Reserve Fund and NYS EXCEL Aid. The issue that precipitated the vote is the septic system at Northwood Elementary School, which is past its life expectancy. The district had intended to replace the system with a connection to the Town of Greece sewer system as part of the recently completed 2012 capital project; however district officials learned earlier this year that the town would not go forward with the sewer line extension. As a result, the 2015 Capital Maintenance and Safety Project includes a cost efficient package sewer treatment plant,

which is a pre-engineered and pre-fabricated method of treating wastewater with an aerobic process. The proposed project also includes the reconstruction of pavement at the Merton Williams Aquatic Center and Village Elementary School bus loop and back parking lot, which deteriorated during last year’s harsh winter. At Hilton High School’s LeBeau Field, site modifications to the entry and walkways from the parking lot to the stands are proposed in order to separate pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Residents can find more detailed information on the District website and in the “Insight” newsletter mailed to homes in mid-November. Community information meetings will take place throughout November and early December. For a list of meetings, visit hilton.k12.ny.us/info/CapitalProject15.htm. Provided information

Heel the Heroes ... The Journey of a Marine and his Dog by Tami Raco

The Kiwanis Club of Spencerport heard a presentation about the Christmas on the Canal event in Spencerport to take place in December. Making the presentation was Ralph Parmelee, a member of the committee overseeing Christmas on the Canal and a member of the Kiwanis Club of Spencerport. Pictured in the photo is Kiwanis Club President Dominic Agostini (right) presenting a donation to Ralph Parmelee for Christmas on the Canal. The funds donated were part of the proceeds realized from the pasta dinner recently held by the Kiwanis Club. Provided photo.

Man displays handgun in attempted robbery of Chase Bank On November 12 at approximately 5:32 p.m., an unknown suspect attempted to rob the Chase Bank located at 66 Main Street in Brockport. The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 5’10” tall and was wearing a black winter hat, black glasses with clear lenses, white collared shirt with red pin stripes, white undershirt and jeans. The suspect displayed what appeared to be a black handgun in his waistband area. It is believed that the suspect may be wearing body armor concealed underneath his clothing. The Brockport Police Department is asking for the community’s help by attempting to identify the suspect in the attached photograph. The suspect is considered armed and dangerous. Also, anyone with information they believe to be helpful is encouraged to call 911 and the Brockport Police will follow up immediately. Lt. Mark Cuzzupoli Brockport Police

When Military Service Personnel come back from war with all limbs intact and no visible scars or wounds, we often overlook the toll of their service on their heart, soul and mind. This is what they call the “invisible wounds” of war. Rochester native, Lyndon Villone, a brave young man, decided at the age of 19 to help defend our country’s freedom and join the fight with “The War on Terror.” He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 2005 and served four years active duty as an Amphibious Assault Crewman. Lyndon served two tours in Fallujah, Iraq. He returned home and faced the challenges of adjusting back into the civilian world. He began to experience the repercussions of managing the impact of war and the effects it had on not only himself but also the way it affected his brothers in arms. Lyndon’s struggles led him down paths of substance abuse, trouble with the law, alienating those who loved and cared for him and ultimately a dark road of lonely self destruction. In the early part of 2011, a time when Lyndon began facing some of his toughest days, he took in a Siberian husky puppy. Initially this puppy only served as a way for Lyndon to make some money during his struggles. He planned to use this puppy to help with his financial burdens by selling him. One day Lyndon was singing the Marine Marching Cadence and the pup began to howl along with him. From that day forward Lyndon developed a special attachment to the young Husky pup. Some days Lyndon’s depression had him so recluse and uninterested in life that this pup became the only reason why Lyndon would get up. He would have to get up to feed him, exercise him and care for this young pup. This helped Lyndon pull through some of his hardest days of life. Little did Lyndon know this puppy came to him with a much greater purpose in his life. In a short time, Lyndon developed a close bond to the husky and he ultimately became a significant part of Lyndon’s recovery. The husky was named Ice, in honor of one of Lyndon’s closest friends, Sgt. Wesley Rice. Sgt. Rice lost his life days before Ice was born, in a military training accident. This loss was one of many that Lyndon would be facing in the upcoming years where his struggles became serious. During this same year Lyndon was formally diagnosed with PTSD by the V.A. At this time he did not have the tools to manage or fully understand what he was facing. His struggles continued but he was not alone. He surprisingly found companionship and support from Ice. This canine provided an element of grounding and calming to Lyndon’s tormented spirit. Lyndon’s journey of hardship was very similar to what other returning servicemen/women were facing. The invisible wounds of war, the PTSD complications, the substance abuse, suicidal thoughts and self-destruction were something many men and women faced after their military service. What was different about Lyndon was that he began to find healing in the relationship he had with Ice. This also led Lyndon to begin Therapeutic Horse back riding at the EquiCenter. Lyndon

found his happiest days were those that he spent with the horses and with his canine companion Ice. “At those times when I was with Ice and the horses, I felt my best,” said Lyndon. After experiencing the healing benefits from this type of therapy, Lyndon began to volunteer at the EquiCenter and also trained Ice as a Therapy Dog. In September of 2012 Lyndon and Ice successfully passed the tests and Ice was certified as an official Therapy Dog. He and Ice volunteered throughout the Rochester area providing therapy dog services. Lyndon found this type of work to be most rewarding. November 2012, Lyndon was about to face one of his most painful losses. Sgt. Chris Sawyers, who served and roomed with Lyndon, lost his life to suicide. This was Lyndon’s sixth close loss of a Marine Corps brother. This took him into one of his most painful emotional places. But at this place of grief, pain and darkness, the idea of Heel the Heroes was born. In the United States, 22 Veterans commit suicide every day. Lyndon was empowered to help heal the invisible wounds of other Veterans by using the healing powers of canine and equine therapy. The goal of Heel the Heroes is to help Veterans turn their lives around. In 2013 Lyndon took his idea to Syracuse University to the Entrepreneurs Boot Camp for Veterans program. This is where he learned how to implement his business plan and how to launch this non profit organization to help Veterans who face similar challenges. His dream was becoming a reality. Heel the Heroes is a non-profit organization that is an all-inclusive retreat for Veterans who struggle with PTSD. This retreat will be at no cost to the veteran and will provide canine therapy, equine therapy, as well as therapy from other modules such as music, yoga, art and counseling services. The programs are designed to help Veterans hit their reset button. It is also geared at providing them tools they can bring home to better manage their triggers. Each Veteran will leave with not only the tools but also a short term and long term plan with goals and accountability. Many will be eligible to have their very own Therapy Dog. In 2014 Lyndon left the Greece area to begin to establish this retreat near San Antonio, Texas. The location was chosen for several reasons. The climate allows the program to be operational year round as well as being in one of the most populated areas for wounded veterans in the country. The township where Lyndon began this - Schertz, Texas - was just named the “Purple Heart City.” Lyndon is keeping close ties to the Greece community through various Veteran outreach programs as well as the Greece American Legion where he was just named as a Guest of Honor at its Annual Wounded Warrior Concert. Heel for Heroes is volunteer run and supported 100 percent exclusively by donations. The new organization is beginning their first official Fund Raising Campaign in November 2015. Part of the proceeds from this fundraiser will help bring local Veterans to his Heel the Heroes Retreat in the fall of 2016. To learn more about Heel the Heroes, to donate or volunteer, visit www.heeltheheroes.org.

If anyone can identify the male pictured or observe him in public, do not approach, but call 911 immediately. Provided photo. Lyndon Villone and Ice. Photos taken by Jae Shim in Santa Clarita, California.

Blue Devils football season ends with regionals by Warren Kozireski Brockport spotted South Park of Section VI a 20-0 halftime lead and could not rally as the Section V football champions fell 20-7 in the Class A New York State western regionals. South Park scored on their first possession of the game and, later in the first quarter, on an 89-yard punt return by Offensive Player of the Game David Thomas. Thomas later caught a 64-yard bomb with 91 seconds remaining in the first half, but two other opportunities were stopped by the Brockport defense as Cory Gross made a leaping interception ended one drive and Jeremy Michaels knocked down a pass attempt in the end zone on fourth down to thwart another. That kept the Blue Devils within reach, but they were stopped on downs inside the ten yard line on two consecutive drives to open the third quarter and early in the fourth before finally getting on the board. A ten-play, 50 yard drive kept alive by a roughing-thepasser penalty on third down, was capped by a four-yard touchdown run by Gross and Cameron Fox’s extra point to make it 20-7 with 4:18 remaining. The ensuing onside kick was recovered by junior varsity call-up Nick Brauch, but their comeback attempt was stopped on four downs including a key quarterback sack on second down and a penalty for an illegal forward pass

on third down. The game was fairly even statistically except for the Blue Devils only managing a 1-of 13 on third and fourth downs. The loss in the state playoffs was disappointing, but doesn’t tarnish the Blue Devils first football Section V title. “I’ve been a four-year starter and our teams have always been successful,” senior lineman Cam Calderelli, who had four tackles, said. “We had a lot of sophomores on the team who really stepped up this year. I’m happy for my team right now and the way I look at it is that Brockport is going up from here.” “Coming into the year we had lost a lot of key players and I knew we had a good nucleus back, but I didn’t know how they would gel,” Blue Devils head coach Scott Nugent said. “We really didn’t know what our team was going to be capable of, but we did know they were a great group with no individuals, but team players. “(The seniors) have made everybody accustomed to winning here at Brockport, so that’s the expectation now. Their hard work and perseverance will be what leads future teams here.” Senior linebacker Jim Stone led the Blue Devils with 5.5 tackles while Jeremy Michels ended his high school football career with a second half interception. Other seniors included Austin Myers, Shane Hogan, Brandon Lemere, Joe Jarvis, Fox, Chris Sodoma, Matt Johnston, Tyler Johnson, Nick Bertino, Dylan Johnson and Devin Nottingham.

This holiday give something that means something - give blood or host a blood drive The American Red Cross encourages individuals and organizations to give something that means something this winter by making a lifesaving blood donation or hosting a blood drive. Blood donations often decline from now to New Year’s Day when holiday festivities pull people away from their donation appointments. Seasonal illnesses, such as colds and the flu, can also have a serious impact on blood donations In addition, there are fewer blood drives during the winter months when many hosting organizations postpone drives while people are traveling for the holidays. Severe winter weather may also cause the cancellation of blood drives. Despite the busy holiday season and threat of extreme freezing weather, the need for blood remains steady. Organizations can help by hosting a blood drive during the winter months, and eligible donors are encouraged to make an appointment to give blood. Donors with all blood types are needed, especially those with types O negative, B negative, A negative and AB blood. Visit redcrossblood.org to learn more about hosting a blood drive. American Red Cross Blood Donation Center •Greece - 2590 West Ridge Road, Greece. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays: 12:15 to 6:45 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, 7:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.

Additional blood donation opportunities •Brockport - December 1 and 2, 2015 - 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., The College at Brockport Seymour College Union, 350 New Campus Drive. December 10, 2015 - 2 to 7 p.m., Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints, 4088 Lake Road •Churchville - December 7, 2015 - 1 to 6 p.m., Riga Town Hall, 6460 Buffalo Road. •Hilton - December 7, 2015 - 1 to 6 p.m., First Bible Baptist Church, 990 Manitou Road. •Spencerport - December 4, 2015 - 1 to 6:30 p.m., Ogden Community Center, 269 Ogden Center Road How to donate blood Download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-7332767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. Blood donors can now save time at their next donation by using RapidPass to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, prior to arriving at the blood drive. To get started, visit redcrossblood.org/RapidPass and follow the instructions on the site. Provided information
