“Belgian Love” on Main Street aids three non-profit organizations by Doug Hickerson Driving north on Brockport’s Main Street and approaching the railroad overpass, a concession trailer with a sign, “Belgian Love,” stands in the parking lot of The Capen Fire House. Many have stopped and pulled in for a bite and others in a hurry have passed by wondering what it’s all about. Why is it in that location and who runs it? The concession is owned by WNY Wildlife Service and operated by Tim Wandtke, who is a lieutenant in charge of field operations with the wildlife service. The food offerings are a wide range of authentic Belgian specialties, including desserts and comfort foods. All the proceeds from the sales go to support the Western New York Wildlife Service, the Brockport Ambulance Corps, and the F.F. Capen Hose Co. #4 Fire Museum, all not-for-profit organizations. The unusual combination of these three beneficiaries is explained by Tim Wandtke, who is connected to the other two besides his own. He works as groundskeeper at the Brockport Ambulance Corps. And, he has family ties to the museum.

Tim Wandtke proudly displays some of his Belgian food specialties at the “Belgian Love” concession trailer on Brockport’s Main Street. Photo by Dianne Hickerson.

Wandtke is pleased to have the support of the Environmental Science department at The College at Brockport, “Which is actively supporting the cause through campus awareness and assistance through social media,” he said. And, student volunteers from the department will be serving the Belgian breakfast on Sundays. Wandtke says the trailer was his “brain child” as a unique fund raiser for the organization which he co-founded in 2011 with Virginia Truelson. The trailer has raised funds over the years at fairs, festivals, and other outdoor events. The idea for the current site and the two additional causes started with his father, Gordon Wandtke, who has been a supporter of the Capen Hose #4 Fire Museum. After checking with the museum board, Gordon suggested to his son that he add the museum as a worthy cause and suggested the parking lot on Main Street as a good venue. As for adding the Brockport Ambulance Corps, besides working on their grounds, Wandtke personally identifies with that service. He has been active in EMS most of his adult life and worked in the past for Monroe Ambulance Corps and Rural Metro Corps. He speaks with great concern about the Brockport Ambulance Corps and the museum being “donation driven and dependent on private funding.” He also wants the public to be more aware of the historic museum hidden inside the firehouse which is distinctly marked outside by the 911 memorial sculpture. WNY Wildlife Service located in Hilton, NY, originally founded in 2011, “Has risen to the forefront becoming a leader in the community as a wildlife rescue organization,” Wandtke said. The web site, www.wnywildlifeservice.org, states, “We are dedicated to preserving New York State’s wildlife one life at a time” and, Wandtke adds, “Our focus … primarily consists of wildlife education, protection and preservation serving Monroe, Ontario, Orleans, and Wayne counties.” The Hilton facility is a 24-hour triage clinic in Hilton for injured or orphaned wildlife. As a member of the Wildlife Rehabilitation Council, they refer cases to a rehabilitator with the appropriate specialty. A second

Photo by Dianne Hickerson. location is an extended stay rehabilitation farm in Hamlin. The WNY Wildlife Service is also founder of the A.W.A.R.E. program in Rochester (Animal Welfare and Rescue Effort). Wandtke says it is a “movement (to influence) Monroe County to allow WNY Wildlife Service to respond to police calls that report white-tailed deer injured in auto accidents.” Wandtke is articulate and excited about his Belgian food specialties, attributing his knowledge to a lifetime in the restaurant business, influenced by his father who has Belgian roots. “I have a culinary background,” he said, “and the Wandtkes have been a longstanding restaurant family in Rochester.” Belgian Love offers unique menu items like authentic Belgian waffles, Belgian bratwurst, Belgian fries, Belgian poutine, Belgian Chocolate brownies, Belgian apple crisp streusel, Belgian vanilla ice cream, Belgian coffee and more. A Belgian breakfast is served all day Sunday.

Wandtke invites everyone to drive up, enjoy the food, and support three valuable organizations that serve locally and beyond. During the next two months, as weather allows, the hours are Wednesday through Saturday 4 to 11 p.m. On Sunday it runs from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., for the allday Belgian waffle breakfast. Belgian Love will be hosting a Chicken BBQ on Saturday, October 28 and a “Bring Your Pet Day” on Sunday, October 29, offering a special treat for your pet. (Note): Calls about endangered or nuisance wildlife can be made 24/7 to 585392-3075 or 585-298-8243. More information on the Brockport Ambulance Corps, see www.brockportambulance.org. Tours of the museum can be arranged and donations made by contacting Diana Kruger at 585-637-8719 or on their web site www.capenhosefiremuseum.org.)

Clarkson and Cars - 1879 to the Present On Wednesday, November 1 at 7 p.m., the Clarkson Historical Society will present a program about Cars in Clarkson from the 1800’s to 2017. This talk looks at how cars and Clarkson have been practically synonymous over the years. A member of the Historical Society will first speak about George Selden who was born in Clarkson in 1846 and noted for the fact that he invented and patented one of the first internal combustion engines in the U.S. A power point presentation will show the trucks that Selden built in his Rochester factory.

Thomas A. Rohr

Rick Spurr, who was also born in Clarkson, will then focus on another Clarkson native, Irwin Duryea, who originated Duryea Ford, followed by Rick Spurr himself, whose name is still part of the business life of our area. His son, Randy Spurr, continues to head Spurr Dealership on Route 31 in Brockport. The talk is free and open to the public, and all are welcome to attend. Light refreshments will be served. For more information call 637-5810.

For more than 30 years, October has been designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc., death rates from the disease have decreased over time because of heightened awareness that’s led to increased screening and improved treatment options. But this year alone in the U.S., more than 252,700 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed and about 40,610 women are expected to die from breast cancer. On April 4, 2016, Spencerport resident Martha MaherGarcia lost her seven-year battle with metastatic breast cancer. Now her family and friends are working to ensure that her legacy lives on through the Martha Maher-Garcia Memorial Foundation. Maher-Garcia put her career on hold while raising her two sons, Andrew and Michael Palermo, until 1997 when she decided to enroll in a bachelor’s program at Roberts Wesleyan College while working full time as an administrative assistant for Ogden Parks and Recreation. “She wanted to provide a better life for my brother and me while at the same time work toward reaching her full potential,” said Michael. Maher-Garcia’s sons remember her waking up before dawn each morning to complete her coursework for the next day so that she was able to attend her sons’ sporting events after school. By 2000, she not only completed her bachelor’s degree, graduating with distinction, but was promoted to administrative director. The following year, Maher-Garcia beMartha Maher-Garcia. came assistant director Provided photo. of finance for the Town of Ogden. In 2002, Maher-Garcia joined Monroe Community College, where she would spend the next 14 years and the remainder of her career. Initially hired as a financial specialist in the Office of the Comptroller, she was eventually promoted to Human Resources director. Compelled to continue her education, Maher-Garcia pursued a Master of Public Administration (MPA) at The College at Brockport, graduating at the top of her class in 2005 with a 3.98 GPA. “My mother worked up until about six months or so before she passed,” said Michael. “She was revered for her kindness, open mindedness and selfless nature, so for that reason staff wanted to do something in her name.” In

July 2016, her family was approached about setting up a memorial scholarship. “The most efficient way of doing that was to start a foundation,” said Michael, who now serves as president. “My mom had a large circle of friends, so we were able to establish a board of directors, which now has 16 members that include business owners, attorneys and an accountant.” The cornerstone of the Foundation’s mission is to provide scholarships for students studying at Monroe Community College. Created by and offered through the MCC Foundation, the scholarship supports deserving students, who, like Maher-Garcia, decided to pursue higher education to provide a better future for their families. Scholarship recipients are selected by the MCC Foundation, with special consideration given to mothers working while attending MCC. “For the first time, two scholarships were awarded for the fall 2017 semester to two very deserving candidates, so we feel that our work is coming to fruition,” said Michael. In order to fund the scholarships and other initiatives, the Foundation established an annual golf tournament and dinner. This year’s tournament was held July 3 and raised $17,000 for the Foundation. Next year’s tournament will be held Friday, July 27 at Ravenwood Golf Club in Victor and will include dinner, live music and a silent auction. Golfers, sponsors and volunteers can visit mmgmemorialfoundation.org to sign up. The Foundation also raised over $7,000 by having a team of over 50 participate in the MCC Annual 5K Walk/Run for Scholarships on October 7. “The events have given us tremendous momentum and now we have the financial resources to focus on our other initiatives,” said Michael. Those initiatives include providing financial resources to families affected by cancer, and supporting breast cancer research. “It’s a strain on the family financially and some individuals don’t have family to depend on,” said Michael. “Their situations are much worse that what ours was.” To that end, the Foundation is partnering with organizations such as Sustain, Inspire, Survive, a non-profit organization that provides financial assistance to those battling breast cancer in the Greater Rochester area, including living, transportation, utility, medical and mastectomy product expenses; and Pluta Cancer Center Foundation, which provides comfort bags and fleece ponchos to breast cancer patients beginning treatment, as well as gas/grocery cards and holiday meals/gifts to families in need. To donate to the Martha Maher-Garcia Memorial Foundation, apply for the scholarship or join the mailing list, visit mmgmemorialfoundation.org.

Blue Devils seniors finish with sweep

friday, OcTOBer 27, 2017 Doors open at 5:00 pm

Brockport Elks Lodge

by Warren Kozireski Four Brockport seniors played their final regular season home volleyball match and finished with a sweep over Greece Arcadia 25-14, 25-14, 27-25 for their fifth win of the campaign. An early 8-0 run highlighted by an ace by Michelle Kenward and kills from Destinee Ellison and senior Liz Schultheis staked the Blue Devils to a 10-4 lead in the first game. Senior Kate Kenward had a kill and classmate Kenzie Carter ace as they extended that lead to 17-8 with a 7-0 run. Ellie Gardner had an ace and a kill in game two while Savannah Bennem, Julia Pacitto and Schultheis added single kills as Brockport jumped out to a 15-5 advantage. Pacitto registered a kill and a block with Schultheis adding a block and Zoe Haines a kill over the final eight points of the win. The Blue Devils got their offense in high gear in the third game and they needed every point. Five consecutive kills by Pacitto, Aniyah Cheeves (2), Schultheis and Kate Kenward put them up 12-9. Kills on five of six points by Kate Kenward, Schultheis, Haley Sweet and Pacitto made it 19-15 but Arcadia fought back. Tied 19-19, the teams traded points through 25-25 before Schultheis finished off her final home game in style with a kill and an ace on the final two points. Pacitto finished with a team-best seven kills and added four assists, three aces and two digs. Schultheis had six kills, seven digs, three aces and three assists, Kate Kenward four kills, Carter a pair of aces and Gardner led with 20 assists.

Ranger volleyball seniors honored at final home match by Warren Kozireski Nine seniors were called out one by one prior to Spencerport’s final home girl’s volleyball match of the season to meet their families and pose for pictures before battling Greece Athena in a four-game set. The Rangers had trouble generating points from their offense in game one—a 25-14 loss—and most of game two. Down 21-12, the Rangers rallied late aided by an ace from Paige King and a block by Megan Laubacher during a 5-0 run before falling 25-21.

Saints rally on the road by Warren Kozireski Down two games to none in their girl’s volleyball match at Gates Chili, Churchville-Chili rallied to win the final three and take the match 21-25, 17-25, 25-10, 25-18, 2519. The Saints struggled to earn points with their offense in the first game with only six kills, but were still in it tied 15-15 before a late 5-0 run by the Spartans put the game out of reach. The Saints led game two by as many as four points at 13-9 led by three kills and two blocks by junior Emmalene Draper, but Gates Chili went on a 10-0 run to again seal the victory. Churchville-Chili left no doubt in the third game as they ran out to a 9-1 lead led by a pair of kills from Madison Elam, a kill by Emily Kuhlkin, a block by Sydnie Brown and an ace from Chiara Rota. Rachel Chapman registered consecutive kills to make it 11-3, Draper and Elam each added a kill and a block to extend the lead to 21-8 and Brown finished it off with a pair of kills. The Saints had only seven kills by four different players in the fourth game with two aces while taking advantage of multiple Spartan miscues to force a fifth and deciding game. Tied 9-9, Churchville-Chili received consecutive aces by Rota and another from Jenna Prewasnicak, a block by Elam and kills from Kuhlkin, Chapman and Draper to build an 18-13 lead. Gates Chili rallied to close to within two at 18-16, but kills from Chapman and Avery Elam and two aces by Draper completed the comeback. Chapman led all Saints with 12 kills while Madison Elam registered seven kills, 11 assists and 12 digs. Draper led with five blocks to go with her six kills and three aces, Rota had six aces with four digs, Prewasnicak four aces with 21 assists and Isabella Orologio led with 18 digs. The Saints, with one match remaining, were hoping for a first round bye in next week’s Section V playoffs and looking at either a four or five seed.

They used the momentum from that rally to score 11 kills and three aces in the third game alone. The Trojans led by as many as five points in the early stages of game three, but Maya Voelkl, Lilly Phengsomphane (2) and Sierra Kegler knocked down consecutive kills during the comeback. Alyssa Falbo had consecutive aces to later put the Rangers up by three. Athena rebounded to tie the game 21-21. Phengsomphane again had consecutive kills to put Spencerport ahead 24-22, but again the Trojans came back and were one point away from the sweep at 25-24. But Phengsomphane tied the game 25-25 with a kill just inside the left sideline, Falbo had her serve hit the top of the net and drop in for her third ace of the game and an Athena error gave the Rangers a 27-25 win. The fourth game was a see-saw affair through the early going before, tied 11-11, the Trojans went on a 5-0 run and later led 21-17. The Rangers would rally again on kills by Laubacher, Jennifer Michaels and two by Phengsomphane to close to within a point at 24-23 before the match ended on a long serve. The Rangers, with one win on the season, will be on the road for the first round of next week’s Section V playoffs. “There are a few teams at the top,” Spencerport head coach Ed Patt said. “We have a similar seed as last year when we made it all the way to the semi-finals because all the rest of the teams are so close.” Co-captains Taylor Goodman, King and Kylie Tozer along with Janisa Phromsiri, Phengsomphane, Kegler, Grace Walsh, Michaels and Alexis Dzus all played their final home volleyball match.

Homelessness and the arts As we find ourselves deep in to the autumn season, the BUM Players of Brockport are again busy preparing their annual murder-mystery audience-participatory “whodunit” in conjunction with the Brockport Kiwanis. This event is performed as a benefit for Kiwanis, with the proceeds to be used for various children’s programs. Additionally, the BUM Players are asking that ticket-buyers bring donations of nonperishable food items as they focus upon a specific aspect of homelessness: hunger. These donations will remain local, being donated to Brockport’s Ecumenical Food Shelf. As always, this is an original script written by director, actor and BUM Player founder, Gary “Turk” Thomas. All cast members are veterans of the BUM Players and include David Hansen, Paul Kimball, Marcy Miceli, Charles Edwards, Marita Keys, Steve Richardson and Thomas. Newcomer Mamie Smith poses as our “victim.” John “Mack” McCarthy serves as assistant director.

Kendall gets its own Little Free Library by Kristina Gabalski They have been popping up all over the area over the last several years, and now the Town of Kendall has its own Little Free Library. Kendall Jr./Sr. High School librarian Alicia Charland says Kendall’s Little Free Library, located just outside the entrance to the Kendall Town Hall, was donated to the community by the Kendall Class of 1997, “in memory of classmates lost, but not forgotten.” Charland is a long-time promoter of community literacy and explained that the mission of the Little Free Libraries is to, “inspire a love of reading, build community and spark creativity by fostering neighborhood book exchanges.” Kendall’s Little Free Library made its debut during the Kendall Scarecrow Festival September 30. Charland says community members of all ages are welcome to take a book from or leave a book in the box. Little Free Libraries are not meant to replace traditional public and institutional libraries, but to enhance them, the Little Free Libraries website states.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, up to 61 percent of low income families do not have any books for their children at home. Little Free Libraries provide 24/7 access to books, and according to littlefreelibrary. org, there are now 60,000 registered Little Free Libraries in all U.S. states and 80 countries. Millions of books are exchanged each year, increasing access to books for readers of all ages and backgrounds.

Hawley appeals to state officials for bridge repair funding Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C,I-Batavia) has written to Gov. Cuomo and New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Matthew Driscoll asking for increased funding to repair and secure dozens of local bridges that have been deemed structurally deficient by a recent report from State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli’s office. “Securing infrastructure funding at the local level is like pulling teeth every year in Albany,” Hawley said. “Just because we are a more rural community compared to New York City doesn’t mean our local roads, bridges and highways take any less punishment. If anything, our bridges wear down more easily because many more residents drive and our agriculture and small business vehicles are constantly shipping more goods across the state.”

Statewide estimates to make all the necessary repairs are $27 billion, with 23 percent of Genesee County bridges and 16.2 percent of Orleans County bridges categorized as structurally deficient. “This is about giving peace of mind to our bus drivers as they bring our children to school, our parents making the morning commute to put food on the table and our small-business owners working hard to transport their goods to market,” Hawley said. “Government’s top priority should be the safety of its residents, and that starts with roads and bridges in which we have confidence, allowing residents and tourists to travel safely. Securing funding to make this a reality is a must, and I will fight in the coming weeks and months to make that happen.” Provided information

Entitled “Homicide for the Homeless,” the play takes place in the fictitious Tent City homeless community set up near Brockport’s United Methodist Church. As community members gather to celebrate the grand opening of a new homeless shelter, the unthinkable happens as one of the Tent City occupants is found brutally murdered; and all the victim’s many close acquaintances are the prime suspects. It falls to the authorities and the amateur detectives in the crowd to solve the twisted murder. The play is scheduled for November 3, 4, 10 and 11 at 7:30 p.m. each evening. This year, the play will again be held in the Fellowship Hall of the United Methodist Church, 92 Main Street, Brockport. Additional parking is available in the Municipal Lot behind Sweden Town Hall on State Street just across Main from the church. Tickets will be $10 or two for $19 and may be obtained by calling Dan Perry at 6375398 or Kelly Lewis at 637-5358. Provided information

On Saturday, August 26, incoming students from The College at Brockport participated in the 8th Annual Saturday Day of Service. The program was developed cooperatively through the Village of Brockport, the Brockport Parks Committee, The College at Brockport and fifty organizations, agencies, churches, libraries, and more, throughout the Greater Rochester area. New freshmen were given the choice of which of the many areas they’d prefer to work on, then were divided into groups and were directed to their assignments across the greater Brockport area. The students participated in this at-large community service initiative during their first weekend at college. In that way they take some responsibility for and are “giving back” to their new homes in the village. The students walked from campus to their assigned areas including Monika Andrews Children’s Park on Utica Street, and Corbett Park on Clark Street in Brockport. Students gave two hours of service, sanding and painting parking barriers, bicycle racks, weeding and mulching under and around the playground equipment, and

weeding lilac and flower beds, racking up an impressive 80 hours of volunteer service. Harry Donahue and the Brockport’s Department of Public Works supplied materials and tools, and parks committee members supervised the young workers. Sandi Henschel and Linda Ketchum worked with and supervised a group of students at Monika Andrews Children’s Park, and Losh Spalla and Joe Blosenhauer were the student supervisors at Corbett Park. Mayor Margay Blackman worked with a group of students walking around the village and delivering informational materials to students living in off-campus housing. Thanks to the students, parks committee members, Nikole Van Wie, Coordinator of Community Service at The College at Brockport, Mayor Blackman and Linda Ketchum, Vice-Chair of the Village of Brockport’s Parks Committee, for their efforts in making the 8th Annual Saturday of Service in the Village of Brockport a rousing success. Put Lessons From “Retirement Week” to Work

Congress has designated the third week of October as National Save for Retirement Week. What lessons can you learn from this event? First of all, save early – and save often. The earlier you start saving and investing, the less you will have to put away each year to accumulate the resources you’ll need for a comfortable retirement. And by putting time on your side, you’ll be able to take advantage of compounding – the ability to earn money on your principal and your earnings.   Here’s another suggestion: Contribute as much as you can afford to tax-advantaged retirement accounts, such as an IRA and your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored plan.   Finally, try to overcome barriers to building your retirement savings. One such barrier is debt – because the higher your debt payments, the less you can afford to invest. Do what you can to keep your debt under control.   By following these steps, you can go a long way toward putting the ideas behind National Save for Retirement to work for you – all year long.

Restoration of historic Hillside Cemetery chapel is underway with roof replacement by Kristina Gabalski The historic Medina sandstone chapel in Hillside Cemetery in Clarendon is getting a new slate roof as the first major step towards restoration and preservation of the landmark. A crew from Leo J. Roth in Rochester began work this month removing and replacing slate shingles. New copper is also being placed in roof valleys and a rotted section of the roof near the main entrance will be replaced.

A shot of the Hillside Chapel looking west and showing its gothic “flying buttress” which is just for show. Photo by K. Gabalski.

Hillside Cemetery is located just south of the Village of Holley on Rt. 237. Erin Anheier, Clarendon Historical Society secretary, says the current roof is 123 years old. “We expect this to last at least another 100 years,” she says of the new roof. “The roof is the most important and most expensive project in the restoration of the chapel,” Anheier explains. “It has been patched a few times but still has had leaks the last few years. Water intrusion is very damaging to a masonry building and this will resolve the most serious threat to the chapel. It is a relief to see it being properly addressed.” Anheier says Leo J. Roth is very experienced with slate roofing. Clarendon Historian Melissa Ierlan says the slate and copper nails being used are historically correct. Some of the old slate shingles are being saved, she says, “in case there is a use for them sometime down the road.” The roof project and future restoration work is being funded in part by a grant from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation’s Environmental Protection Fund, Erin Anheier says, as well as donations from local citizens and funds raised through various events.

Photo of roof replacement work on Hillside Chapel being done October 17, 2017. Photo provided by Erin Anheier. “Several of the fund raising events involved elementary and high school students from Holley Central School,” she explains. “I’m proud of the community support and involvement in saving the chapel and preparing it for future public use.”

The Town of Clarendon will next seek bids for window restoration work. The Clarendon Historical Society envisions the restored chapel as being a place for events including concerts, lectures, small weddings and funerals.

ning Board and Monroe County Planning Council. These volunteer positions demonstrate that I am experienced and invested in our community. My guiding philosophies as a public servant are that I believe in being fiscally responsible and to apply a sensible approach to growth and development. That means keeping taxes low and keeping what is best for Clarkson as a whole, in the forefront. It’s important for me to listen more than I talk, so I can fully understand what people need. I believe that government exists to protect the freedom of each person, not restrict it. I would appreciate your support on Election Day, to continue moving the Town of Clarkson forward. Allan Hoy, Candidate for Clarkson Town Council

As a life-long resident of the Brockport/Clarkson community, I have seen plenty of change. Being an employee of the Town of Clarkson for 20 years (the last five years as Highway Superintendent), I have been personally involved in the completion of many capital projects, which in my opinion, have greatly improved the landscape of the town. In the past 25 years, the town has built the Courthouse, Firehouse, Sans Souci Park boat launch, Hafner Park, Ridgewood Park, Veterans Park, two lodges, two pavilions, two playgrounds, and handicap access to the Town Hall and Courthouse. We have also installed over 40,000 feet of water main and 12,000 feet of sewer main. These projects were all completed by the Highway Department work force, saving the residents hundreds of thousands of dollars in labor; and are the direct result of the experienced, fiscally responsible, and proactive leadership of the Town Board. The Veterans Park on Ridge Road (Rt. 104) has recently been unfairly criticized by our opponents. The town purchased the former brownfield parcel in 2010. Many will remember it as the old “104 Enterprises,” an eyesore for years. The Town Board obtained grants to remove the underground tanks and remediate the site. The DEC declared that the site was free of any contamination in

politically speaking It has been an honor and a privilege to serve on the Clarkson Town Council for the last 23 years. I believe that experience matters which, along with being invested in the community, makes me a logical choice for re-election. My family arrived in Clarkson 209 years ago, before it became a town. I live on Lake Road with my wife Debbie. I graduated from both Brockport High School and Monroe Community College. I am retired from the Eastman Kodak Company and presently work at Rochester Precision Optics as a manufacturing engineer. I continue to be an active volunteer firefighter in the Brockport Fire Department, joining 41 years ago. I have held many other community volunteer positions over the years in the Sweden/Clarkson Recreation and Parks Advisory Board, Monroe County Fire Advisory Board, Brockport-Clarkson-Sweden Joint Recreation, Clarkson Plan-

Spencerport Federal Credit Union expands service area Spencerport Federal Credit Union announces that a request for an expansion of their community charter boundaries was recently approved by the National Credit Union Administration. The credit union is now able to serve people who live, work, worship, attend school or are active community volunteers in Monroe or Orleans Counties. The total combined population of the counties is more than 791,000. In 2006, the credit union was granted a community charter which included seven towns within Monroe County. The credit union was originally founded in 1962 to serve employees of the Spencerport School District “We are excited about the future and being able to reach more people with our fantastic loan rates, great deposit products and exceptional member service,” said Nancy Bodhorn, manager of the Spencerport-based credit union.

2011, and yearly testing has confirmed that it remains contaminant free to date. Shortly thereafter, local veterans and Town Board members were looking for an area to honor local heroes, and the old “104 Enterprises” site seemed ideal for a park. Former Highway Superintendent David Goodwin (19982013) is a Veteran, and he was very proud to start and complete the project. A volunteer committee of residents was formed, including, servicemen from the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and Desert Storm, and they developed a plan for the park. After the Highway Department completed the construction of the park, the community took over. Volunteers from the committee, local Veterans, the Town Board, and the Girl Scouts, made various contributions to honor Clarkson’s heroes. Our VFW donated the flag pole, and a local Girl Scout troop donated the stone wall and benches. All took great pride in making the Veterans Park a reality. In conclusion, I’m sure you will agree that great strides have been made in our town over the last 25 years, with much more to come. I hope for your vote on November 7. Robert M. Viscardi Clarkson Highway Superintendent

Local elections matter

The Town of Sweden has a new assessor named Tammy Baker. A Village/Town search committee and the Sweden Town Board unanimously approved Tammy. Coming from Geneseo, she has considerable experience with college towns, rental housing and big box stores. (She took Wal-Mart on and won.) Tammy is smart, capable and professional. Most importantly she is approachable, a welcome change to the Town of Sweden Assessment Department. Assessments haven’t changed from the previous assessor because the new figures are not out yet. This will happen in 2018. In the past, my husband and I have challenged our assessment. We won once and lost once. If you don’t agree with your assessment, please contact Darla Emmerson or Tammy Baker from the Town of Sweden Assessment Department. Remember, it is your right to dispute your assessment.

Do you ever wonder how we got to where we are politically in the USA? What were most of us doing when the world turned upside down? The answer, unfortunately, is a lot of us ordinary people were sleeping on the job. It’s easy to let someone else do the work--until wham! What happened? At the local level we have had steady government that few have questioned, intermittently, a government largely dominated by the Republican Party. However, with the last national election, many of us have come alive as the Clarkson Democratic Committee. For months our candidates have been working tirelessly to get out to meet the residents of the town and to listen to their concerns and ideas to revive bipartisanship and make our town government once again more inclusive. Above all, we have been encouraging everyone to get out to vote on November 7. If we want change at the national level, we have to begin to change locally. Local elections count! Vote November 7!
