Free NYS Medicare counseling program available

A rather large skeleton was spotted walking his dog on Prospect Street in Spencerport. Photo by Karen Fien.

The New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) reminds older New Yorkers that free and objective counseling is available to help Medicare beneficiaries navigate their options during the Medicare open enrollment period from October 15 through December 7. Open enrollment is the time when Medicare beneficiaries can make changes in their health plan or prescription drug coverage and other options. Any changes take effect January 1. The NYSOFA-administered Health Insurance Information, Counseling and Assistance Program (HIICAP) helps 248,000 New Yorkers annually to understand Medicare decisions. It also helps beneficiaries apply for programs that save older adults out-of-pocket costs such as co-payments, premiums and deductibles. Last year, HIICAP saved low-income Medicare beneficiaries an estimated $115 million through these programs. HIICAP counseling has also shown to reduce hospitalizations by 54% and emergency room visits by 14%. This free and objective assistance is provided locally by trained counselors. For assistance, call the helpline at 1-800-701-0501. More information about HIICAP is on NYSOFA’s website, https://aging.ny.gov/ programs/medicare-and-health-insurance. NYSOFA Director Greg Olsen said, “Trained counselors are available to help beneficiaries or new enrollees make informed decisions about plan coverage during Medicare open enrollment, a time when many may feel overwhelmed by their choices. Best yet, this information is free, objective, and local, through NYSOFA’s network of over 700 counselors statewide. By matching individuals with the right coverage levels, this assistance not only improves access to preven-

tive health, but it also helps individuals save on health care costs and enroll in important benefits or subsidies, like the Medicare Savings Program, which provide vital economic security.” Heather Leddick, administrator for HIICAP in New York, said, “All Medicare beneficiaries are encouraged to take a close look at their health care needs during open enrollment, especially any changes such as new doctors who might not be in their plan’s network, prescription changes, or additional service needs. HIICAP counselors provide information and tools that empower beneficiaries to make their own informed decisions about which options match their current needs.” For income-eligible older adults, HIICAP is also available during open enrollment – and throughout the year – to assist in the application process for the Medicare Savings Program (MSP). The MSP was expanded in 2023 to help an additional 300,000 Medicare beneficiaries who may be potentially eligible to save up to an estimated $7,300 in Medicare-related health costs annually. The MSP helps older adults and people with disabilities living on limited incomes by paying their Medicare Part B premiums and automatically enrolls them in Extra Help. This financial assistance can be a lifeline for enrollees, allowing them to maintain their Medicare coverage, access needed care, and afford other necessities. Learn more about this program, and how to enroll, on NYSOFA’s MSP information page, https://aging.ny.gov/medicaresavings-program, including a video tutorial about the application process. Spirits shared their stories during annual Ghost Walk in Spencerport This year’s Spirits of Spencerport Ghost Walk was held on Friday, October 13, and Saturday, October 14, with sold out performances both evenings. The weather was cool and clear for the community to walk around the village and hear historical and spooky tales. The efforts of many contributed to make the event a success – greeters, guides, actors, Studio 19 Dance Company dancers, Russ Young and his hearse on Friday evening, TJ Sercu bringing his fire truck both evenings, servers, the Ogden Special Police, and Joel Humphrey for coming up with many of the Ghost Walk stories. Spencerport Depot and Trolley Museum, Hunt Real Estate ERA, The First Congregational Church, and Union Street Coffee House also lent their support to the event. Refreshments were donated by Brockport Wegmans and Spencerport Tops. The Spirits of Spencerport Ghost Walk is held annually as a fundraiser for the Ogden Historical Society. Community gathers to memorialize roadways to fallen heroes in Spencerport and Parma “Firefighter Robert Fowler Memorial Highway” dedicated in Spencerport Assemblyman Josh Jensen (R,C-Greece) was joined on Thursday, October 12, by the family of Firefighter Robert Fowler, fellow elected officials including Senate Minority Leader Rob Ortt, and community members for a ceremony commemorating the dedication of a portion of New York state highway in the Village of Spencerport in honor of the fallen firefighter. With legislation signed into law in 2022 (A.85342022), a portion of South Union Street, in the heart of the village was dedicatRobert Fowler ed as “Firefighter Robert Fowler Memorial Highway.” Robert “Bob” Fowler was a member of the Spencerport Fire Department, who, when responding to a call on February 22, 1997, lost his life in the line of duty. During a severe windstorm, a 40-foot tree fell onto his car taking his life while narrowly sparing his son who was responding with him. Firefighter Fowler joined the Spencerport Fire Department in 1974, serving and protecting the people of his community as well as organizing a Christmas party for the children of department members and being there for his fire department family when needed. At the time of his death, Bob was a sixth-grade teacher in the Byron-Bergen School District, having been an educator for 31 years. Fowler was survived by his wife Gail and sons Alan and Tim. “Firefighter Fowler is a true community hero who lived his life with a willingness to serve others. It is an incredible honor to create a lasting memorial for not only him but the Fowler family, the Spencerport Fire Department and residents of Spencerport and Ogden,” said Assemblyman Jensen. “We will forever remember his sacrifice and continue to honor him while driving through the village every day.”

“Our family is grateful to Assemblyman Jensen. Bob wanted to serve his community. We are pleased that Bob is being honored for his service. We hope that when those who knew Bob see the sign, they will remember him and smile. We also hope that this sign will remind everyone of the service, dedication and sacrifice of all firefighters and first responders,” said Gail Fowler. “Firefighter Bob Fowler will forever be remembered as a hero. He selflessly rushed toward danger to help others that day, fully aware of the risks that came with his duty as a firefighter. His life and his legacy are inspirational – and will now be enshrined into our history as we dedicate this portion of highway in his memory,” said Senator Ortt. “Although our membership has changed over the years, Bob’s memory is alive and well in those of us who knew him. During the month of November, the work of artists studying at Stony Point Art Studio in Ogden will be on display at Hart Gallery 27, 27 Market Street, in the village of Brockport. Spencerport resident, Rita Dean, is the featured artist of the show. Thirty of her original works will be on display in the Main Gallery. This is Rita’s first solo art exhibit. She said, “I am really excited, and a little nervous.” Rita said painting and attending classes at Stony Point has become a really important part of her life. She has been painting at Stony Point for six years, and has explored all mediums of painting. “I started out with colored pencils, and worked my way through experimenting with all different types of paint. Oil is my favorite, but I enjoy the challenge of learning about different styles and paints. Painting is relaxing, but intense. I find myself really engaged in my work and everything else is just out there,” she said. For inspiration she turns to Pinterest, looking for ideas. “I see something that sparks my interest, and I just go from there.” Rita’s paintings will include landscapes, horses, animals, fantasy

works, country scenes, barns and Christmas pictures. Her subject matter is chosen by what she loves – horses are a favorite. Rita is an avid horseback rider, riding her horse, Fancy Red Sugar through all four seasons. Rita lives in Spencerport with her husband, Ardell. The Upstairs Gallery will feature a variety of works from Stony Point Art Studio artists. “The artists at Stony Point Art Studio range in age and visual art experience; they work in a variety of mediums with an even broader variety of subjects. Students express themselves with projects of their choosing, sometimes in an exercise to explore a new medium, other times in a personal endeavor to capture a moment in time on canvas. As their teacher, I am honored to be a part of the process and journey that allows them to create. Being able to share their talents is a gift for both the artists and the community,” said Jeannine Pelusio, owner and instructor, Stony Point Art Studio. All artwork will be on display for the entire month of November, with an opening night reception on Friday, November 3, from 6 to 9 p.m. There will be refreshments and the opportunity to meet the artists. Bridge closure in Holley The bridge carrying East Avenue over the Erie Canal in the village of Holley closed to traffic on Thursday, October 19, for bridge maintenance activities. The New York State Department of Transportation expects the bridge to reopen by Thursday, November 2.

Sweden receives another strong NYS fiscal stress score The NYS Comptroller monitors the fiscal health of all municipalities in the state and annually issues a report on the fiscal stress level of each municipality. The rating system is based on one hundred points in each of two categories (environmental and fiscal). The fewer the points earned the better the municipality’s fiscal strength. Sweden’s score for the fiscal year ending December 31, 2022 was a 0 out of 100 for financial indicators; a 23.3 for environmental indicators. On the more relevant fiscal score card, Sweden’s 0 score was a small improvement over last year’s score of 3.3. This section monitors items such as fund balance, cash position, operating deficits, debt services, personal services and employee benefits. The Town has had a “no designation” finding since the inception of the scoring system.

The environmental stress score monitors items largely out of a town’s control: population, poverty, age, household income, unemployment. The Town of Sweden received 23.3 points which is considered “no designation.” The areas in which Sweden received points were: a declining population (10 points) and the median value of owner occupied housing (13.33). Sweden received the same score for the same reasons in 2021. “A strong fiscal score translates into stable government services,” said Supervisor Kevin Johnson. “It also reassures town taxpayers that they won’t be hit with major tax levy increases. The Town’s money is managed carefully and conservatively.” The fiscal stress reports of NYS towns were released this month and can be found at osc.state.ny.us. Provided information

Urgent need in the Spencerport community The Spencerport Ecumenical Food Shelf has an urgent need for food and monetary donations. Since the fall of 2022, the need for help for members of the community has been on the increase. The Spencerport Ecumenical Food Shelf serves families within the Spencerport Central School district. The increased need among these families occurs for many reasons, including company restructures that cut their job, sudden health issues that create extra bills, divorce, death, or many life changes beyond their control. Spencerport has proven to be a giving community, and this was especially true during the pandemic. The

Food Shelf is now in need of that kind of support again, and asks residents to consider giving a monetary or food donation through any local church. Reverend Whitney Scoville was appointed as the new Pastor at Ogden Presbyterian Church on September 18. A Churchville-Chili graduate, Whitney resides in Hilton with her husband and children. Whitney spent her career in social work but always had a heart for ministry. After thirteen years working as a licensed social worker, she felt the call on her life to dedicate her career to full time ministry. Having a young family and working, she decided to attend Dubuque University’s online seminary program to become a commissioned pastor. “The online option met our family’s needs,” said Whitney. Whitney’s focus in social work was supporting children, adolescents, and families. She worked for the Center for Youth in Cayuga and at the University of Rochester. Working full time, having a young family, and going to school part time made it a slow transition of careers. “It was six years in the making,” said Whitney. During Whitney’s career in social work, she was highly active in ministry. She served as an elder deacon assisting with youth group ministries, served with mission trips, and was an interim pastor (pulpit supply) at OPC over the past few years. “There was always something different about Ogden Presbyterian; the Holy Spirit is really stirring here, and I am excited to serve here,” she said. Reverend Whitney Scoville became the official pastor of OPC just a few short weeks ago and she is already en-

DANCE/Hartwell includes graduate and undergraduate choreography The Department of Dance at SUNY Brockport presents performances of DANCE/ Hartwell on Thursday, October 26, through Saturday, October 28, at the Hartwell Dance Theater in Hartwell Hall on the Brockport campus. All performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $17/general, $12/seniors, SUNY Brockport alumni, faculty and staff, and $9/students and are available online at fineartstix.brockport.edu, by phone at 585395-2787 or at the Tower Fine Arts Center Box Office, 180 Holley Street, Brockport. Under the direction of professor and department chair, Carlos R. A. Jones, this year’s DANCE/Hartwell features dance works by budding and mid-career choreographers within the undergraduate and graduate dance program in the Department of Dance. Themes of self-empowerment and negotiating

societal expectations are the common threads weaving through the evening’s works. Undergraduate Annika Winters’ choreographic work investigates the consciousness of knowing one’s purpose in life. Also on the program is “Fantoccini Leon,” choreographed by graduate student Mark E. Holland with an original composition by staff accompanist Leon Hsu. This delightful yet haunting work suggests we all contemplate the puppet-like strings that society places on us and consider how we might clip those strings of manipulation to see our personal truth. Additional student choreographers include Heather Boorman, Kiera Unverzagt, Iyana Voltaire, and Anna White. DANCE/ Hartwell will showcase group and solo choreography followed by a talk back with the choreographers after each performance. Provided information

The National Association of State Director of Pupil Transportation announced that the rate of school bus illegal passings is at an epidemic level. Survey results suggest that school buses are illegally passed more than 41.8 million times per year in the United States. In New York State, school buses are illegally passed 50,000 times each school day, putting children at risk as they step on and off the bus. It is illegal to pass a school bus that is stopped with its red lights flashing pursuant to New York State law. Traffic approaching from either direction must stop before reaching the bus either on a two-lane road, multi-lane highways, or on divided highways. A first-time stop-arm violation carries a fine of $250. Subsequence violations within an 18month period are subject to a $25 increase, up to a maximum of $300. The Hilton Central School District has started a warning period for the rollout as part of the Monroe County School Bus Safety Program. The warning period began on Monday, October 16, which coincided with the beginning of National School Bus Safety Week. The school bus safety program will begin issuing citations on November 15 to motorists who illegally pass a stopped school bus in violation of state law. The enforcement action follows a 30-day warning period that will feature a robust public awareness campaign educating residents of school bus safety laws along with the installation of five road signs in high violation areas. “By taking in the lead in joining the Monroe County School Bus Safety Program, the Hilton Central School District is sending a clear message: the safety of our children is non-negotiable,” said Monroe County Executive Adam Bello. “Thank you to Bus Patrol for their partnership, and to Hilton Central and all the other Monroe County school districts who have signed on to participate in this program, which will ensure our kids are safer as they walk to and from their school buses.” During the warning period, any motorist who fails to stop for a school bus when its red lights are flashing, and the stop-arm is extended will receive a warning letter in the mail about the violation with no monetary penalty. Additionally, there will be a public education and awareness campaign to remind residents to stop for the school bus as required by New York state law. This includes the installation of road signs in high violation areas. “I can think of no better way to reinforce the importance of student safety than kicking off this program during National School Bus Safety Week,” said Karoon Monfared, CEO of BusPatrol. “The Hilton School District is leading the way forward to deter illegal school bus passings, and we’re reminding every motorist to slow down and stop for the bus.” In total, HCSD has installed 81 school buses with the most advanced camera technology, with other school districts in the process of installing their school fleet. Altogether, 419 buses throughout Monroe County will be equipped with the same safety technology. This upgrade includes stop-arm cameras to help communities enforce school busstopping laws, which capture the license plates of vehicles that violate these laws. The technology, installation, and maintenance are provided at no cost to the school district or taxpayers. Opinion/Comments An announcement from Karen B. Leidig and Matt’s Coats for Kids Although I love writing, this is such a hard one for me to write. Twenty years ago, our family suffered the worst loss imaginable. One of my three beautiful blessings from God, Matthew Jeffery Fitton, my oldest son, went to Heaven as the result of a tragic car accident on a heavily traveled roadway that still needs better safety to this very day. Unfortunately, I can still remember the pain that changed our family’s lives forever. Any parent that has had a child go to Heaven before them sadly understands. Through the millions of tears, anger, hurt – everything, I made a promise that positive things would be done in Matt’s name and memory. Countless memories flooded my brain, of his beautiful life – which was way too short. For years, all three sons were involved in sports and the Oliver Middle School gym was a common destination. Matt had been Matthew Fitton working a second job that summer, helping clean and prepare the Middle School for the upcoming school year. Five thousand two hundred area residents signed petitions to have that gym named after Matthew; this has still not happened, but I still have those petitions. An idea sparked in my mind. I didn’t want scholarships or financial awards in his name because only a few would benefit. I remembered how happy he was to get his Christmas present the previous December; about a month early. He knew that he was getting a new coat for Christmas, which he needed. A gorgeous blue Columbia jacket from Dick’s Sporting Goods, in his size to fit his 6’6” frame. Matthew’s smile lit up whomever he was around, and a “Fitton-Hug” was and is the best ever. “Matt’s Coats for Kids” mission statement: “Our mission is to keep with us the

essence of love and friendship which was, and always will be Matthew.” That has been fulfilled over and over again in beautiful ways; giving many in need warm clothing for our winters. Four Christian, caring people who defined friendship and were stellar examples on Earth and now rest in Heaven – my Mom and Dad, Giana Bartolucci, and my dear Matthew. Every day ... always you are with us. Heartfelt Appreciation to: The collection sites who opened their doors to us, hosting a box and space to collect items. Businesses who donated delicious food and beverages to feed the volunteers, the boxes, and bags, masks, special T-shirts made each year displaying that year’s theme for those who helped. Members of our local media – TV and radio stations, and print media, especially Westside News, who helped us to get the word out to the public. The Brockport Fire Department Company #3, the Brockport Elks Club, and the Brockport Exempts Club who gave us a temporary home for a weekend each year. Friendships made, tears that fell, and laughter that healed through faithful volunteers that were amazing. Stories and hugs that were shared with myself and others at the distribution from those who came to get the items that they needed for their families. The beautiful children who came to our distribution days needing a coat that brought light to all of us; deserving of our help and caring. The generosity of new and gently used items from EVERYONE! We will no longer have our annual coat drive and free distribution, but the Facebook page will remain active. If there is information regarding coat drives or collections of winter wear items, please forward them to me and I hope to share them on the page. Always there will be those who need a helping hand and opportunities that exist to share our blessings in this world. Remember, “The Boomerang Effect – When we help others; we are truly helping ourselves.” To my dear sister, Kathy Bauch-Begemann, whose love, support and faith remains continuous; with whom I share val-

Spencerport Cartons for Christmas project seeks donors and volunteers Every year in time for the holidays, the Spencerport community reaches out to help local families who are struggling. The project is Cartons for Christmas. Area churches, schools, service organizations, businesses and individuals of all ages lend their support. Gift cards and cash donations can be dropped off at St John’s Parish Center, 55 Martha Street, Spencerport, from November 1 through 27, Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or contact Cartonxmas@aol. com or text 585-750-5341 to arrange a time. Please make checks payable to Cartons for Christmas. There will be an Open House to accept unexpired food items (no glass please) on Friday, December 1, from 3 to 6 p.m. at

St. John’s school building gym, 65 Martha Street, Spencerport. Frozen turkeys may be donated on Saturday, December 2, at 12:30 p.m. at St John’s school building, 65 Martha Street. Make a local child smile by providing a toy or gift. Beginning November 13, select an angel from the Toy Tree at one of three locations: Spencerport Federal Credit Union, 2775 Spencerport Road; Fowler’s Canaltown Wine & Spirits, 377 South Union Street; or The Unique Shop, 130 South Union Street. We will deliver food cartons during the afternoon of Saturday, December 2. This project is sponsored by the Ecumenical Council of area churches. We thank you for your anticipated support! Thank you for supporting Drake Library On behalf of the Friends of Drake Library, we would like to thank the Brockport community for supporting the recent Antique Appraisers Roadshow on Saturday, October 14. This event raised over $1,000 to benefit Drake Memorial Library programs and services at SUNY Brockport. This was the third time the Friends hosted this fundraiser, and the first time since the pandemic. We were grateful to see many friends from previous years and to have the opportunity to make new ones.

Attendees enjoyed talking about their treasures ranging from paintings to stamp collections, Civil War scrapbooks, furniture, decorative objects and more. The Friends of Drake Library especially appreciate the two on-site expert appraisers, Robert Meringolo (’73) and Robin Stelmach (’88), for contributing their time and expertise. And thank you to the volunteers who made the day run smoothly. See you next time! Mary Jo Orzech and Virginia Campbell Co-Chairs, Friends of Drake Library https://library.brockport.edu/friends

ues, beliefs, and memories – love you dearly, appreciative of you – the best sister ever. My dear parents – thank you for your participation in this mission, and for showing us the importance of family. To Matthew, Daniel and Adam – no matter what or where we all are ... you three are my heart ... the best blessing God has ever given me – and no matter what – my love for you three will go on forever. Two new shoulders and I will be finding the direction and path that God has for me. I will continue writing, playing keyboards and singing, and many things that I need to do – as well as things that I enjoy. If you know someone who has lost a child or someone very dear to them, let them know you are there, love and support them – but let them find their own distinct path for grief and how to continue with their life; for each person’s is different and worthwhile. I established the Matthew J. Fitton Award at the Brockport Hill School in 2009. It is given to one fifth grade boy and one fifth grade girl each school year who “exhibit a strong work ethic, is a friend to all, is always ready with a smile, and is always willing to share and help others.” It is chosen by the students. These were traits that Matthew exuded as well as the award’s recipients. Currently it is funded through 2031, and costs approximately $80 a year. If you would like to donate to add more years for this award’s existence, send your donation,

specifying that it is for this award’s continuity, c/o Mr. Sean Bruno, Superintendent of Brockport Central Schools, 40 Allen Street, Brockport, NY 14420. Thank you all for being part of this journey of helping, loving, honoring and finding healing. Love and a “Fitton-Hug,” Karen B. Leidig Matt’s Coats for Kids Note: On Monday, November 6, there will be a gathering at 58 Main in Brockport at 6 p.m. for any past volunteers or friends who wish to share memories and celebrate “Matt’s Coats for Kids.” Food and beverages will be at your own cost.

Children’s books, too, at Lift Bridge Nestled in the heart of Main Street, Brockport, the Lift Bridge Book Shop is a favorite destination for the community’s bookloving residents. Owners, Sarah and John, have been at the helm since 2015 and pride themselves on providing diversity in their selection of products. Customers will always find something of interest. John worked in the store while in college. He grew to love the store’s main fare but took special interest in the children’s selection. Entry to the store generally draws a warm welcome from the front counter. A scattering of individual displays offers the casual browser topics of current interest. Nearby, their display of books and materials of local interest says, “Welcome to Brockport.” Plackards on or above various shelving units guide the shopper to favorite topics. Browsing through aisles surrounded by adult books recently, I soon found myself in the midst of juvenile paraphernalia. I kept going to see what I might see. Always interested in aviation books, I found the book, At the Airport by Max Walther, and picked it up for a closer look. Hard covered, this sixteen page board book is jammed with colorful pictures that depict all known activities of a commercial airport, and then some. As I flipped through the pages I was reminded of an event in my own early years that, no doubt, drew me into a lifetime career in aviation. My father was visiting a local architect/ teacher/scout master who had built an impressive log cabin camp along a rustic country stream in the Southern Tier of New York State. While they talked, I took interest in a coffee table book about transportation. The entire theme was interesting, but I kept going back to the chapter about aviation. The architect/scout master took note of my interest and, when we were about to leave, offered me the book. It was a prize – one that surely led me to my chosen career. As I looked beyond this Lift Bridge product on their shelf I found similar books about all types of work. Intermixed were activities and games that not only entertained, but also educated (in a friendly, familiar way). The wealth of products and information contained within those walls is a treasure land

for young parents, grandparents and early education teachers. John, who leads the decisions about the children’s section, has a passion for delivering books that teach as well as entertain. For readers who are Westsiders, this store is a “must see.” Not just for the children’s section, but for reading pleasure and related gifts for all ages. For those who reside in Rochester and nearby suburban communities, consider adding a trip to Brockport to your to-do list. The creativity of this couple shows up in their displays and on their shelves. It surely is the reason they were able to survive during the lean years of the pandemic. About to celebrate a store birthday as the pandemic began, they inserted a letter into each customer’s bag when they made a sale. Someone noted this on Social Media and the post went viral. Brockport’s loyal citizens called for gift certificates, ordered books for shut-in relatives (to be delivered in person by the store) and generally kept their hometown shop in business. That same creativity is demonstrated again and again in the new and used books they offer, the related giftware they keep in stock and their focus on providing a diverse selection of products. When asked, Sarah relayed that, in their store, it is their goal to ensure that customers will “find something they didn’t expect.” For children’s materials, for your own pleasure, for gift giving and for plain old relaxation and entertainment, make Brockport and the Lift Bridge Book Shop a destination. You might be surprised, but surely not disappointed. Rick Iekel Greece

Social Security announces 3.2 percent benefit increase for 2024 Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits for more than 71 million Americans will increase 3.2 percent in 2024, the Social Security Administration announced October 12. On average, Social Security retirement benefits will increase by more than $50 per month starting in January. More than 66 million Social Security beneficiaries will see the 3.2 percent cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) beginning in January 2024. Increased payments to approximately 7.5 million people receiving SSI will begin on December 29, 2023. Some people receive both Social Security and SSI benefits.

“Social Security and SSI benefits will increase in 2024, and this will help millions of people keep up with expenses,” said Kilolo Kijakazi, Acting Commissioner of Social Security. Some other adjustments that take effect in January of each year are based on the increase in average wages. Based on that increase, the maximum amount of earnings subject to the Social Security tax (taxable maximum) will increase to $168,600 from $160,200. Social Security begins notifying people about their new benefit amount by mail starting in early December. Individuals who

have a personal my Social Security account can view their COLA notice online, which is secure, easy, and faster than receiving a letter in the mail. People can set up text or email alerts when there is a new message – such as their COLA notice – waiting for them in my Social Security. People will need to have a my Social Security account by November 14 to see their COLA notice online. To get started, visit www.ssa.gov/ myaccount. Information about Medicare changes for 2024 will be available at www.medicare.gov. For Social Security beneficiaries enrolled in

Medicare, their new 2024 benefit amount will be available in December through the mailed COLA notice and my Social Security’s Message Center. The Social Security Act provides for how the COLA is calculated. The Social Security Act ties the annual COLA to the increase in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) as determined by the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics. Sports & Recreation Spencerport boys volleyball team primed for another title run by Warren Kozireski Spencerport has won the last three consecutive Section V Class B boys volleyball titles and five of the last seven. But the last two seasons have ended one level shy of their ultimate goal – a state championship – as they lost in the state final in each of the last two seasons. For the six seniors on the team who have experienced that, this season is their final chance to put a white banner up in the gymnasium instead of a blue one signifying a state title. “All of the seniors are all really close and we treat this as our actual family, so every game we go out and play like we’re on a mission,” senior middle Mason Brumm said. “This team has a lot of fun all the time and that’s part of the reason we play so great together,” senior setter Gavin Zimmer said. And it is a team despite the six seniors. Seniors Brumm (29 blocks), Sean Baird (22), Collin Auburn (16) and junior Peyton Healy (15) setting the tone at the net defensively and freshman Bailey Zambuto (111), junior Shaun Cannon (76) and sophomore Edrian Rivera (52) leading the team in digs, the Rangers are a force defensively. Add on the offensive side the balance with Auburn (112 kills .316 hitting %), Jackson Brumm (92 kills .251) with juniors Gage Berry (73 kills .101) and Brody Jackson (70 kills .166) plus service point aces from eighth-grader Noah Barravechia 25, Auburn 23 aces, with Cannon, junior Jackson Brumm, Jackson, and Berry adding 17 aces each and the opponent can’t key on any one player defensively.

Jackson, whose two older brothers were also key parts of previous Rangers squads, was the Most Valuable Player of the Sectional playoffs last season and was named to the All-State team as a sophomore. At the start of the final week of the regular season, the Rangers were vying with Churchville-Chili and Irondequoit for the top seed in Class B1 after a 3-0 sweep of Pittsford on senior night. That followed a non-league loss at Orchard Park, a tough team and intentional scheduling to help the Rangers get ready for the postseason and see what they may be up

Finger Lakes State Park announces 2022-2023 hunting schedule Fred Bonn, Regional Director of the Finger Lakes State Parks, has announced the 2023-2024 hunting schedule for the region’s state parks. The complete list of parks and the type of hunting that are allowed can be found at https://westsidenewsny.com/ news/2023-10-17/finger-lakes-state-parkannounces-2022-2023-hunting-schedule/. For all hunting in state parks, hunters must check with the park office to obtain a self-issue permit for any hunting and are responsible for referencing the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (D.E.C.) Hunting and Trapping Guide for the current dates and additional rules. Other park rules and regulations that apply: •All portable tree stands must have the owner’s name, address, and phone number. They must be removed at the end of the

season unless otherwise noted. •Safety zones and restricted areas are posted to ensure the safety of other park patrons and regional personnel. Signs will be posted at all parks during hunting season to notify patrons of this activity. •Handguns are not permitted in any state park. •No trapping is allowed at any of the state parks in the Finger Lakes Region. •A valid New York State hunting license with the proper hunting credentials must be carried with all hunters at all times. against in the state tournament. “We played at Orchard Park to get ready in case that ever happens down the road because we have to get off our butts and play, but I thought it was a great experience and brought the team together,” Spencerport head coach Aaron Austin said. But first, they need to extend their Section V title streak to four. “Winning is contagious and we want to keep breeding winners who want to come back and fight harder every year,” Adams said. “To me it’s going after Sectional titles and having the opportunity to go to states. “Before we just tried to win a division title and now, we’ve done that, and the standard is that much higher. The kids breed that in

themselves and then convince other kids to play volleyball. When I first started, I would not say it was easy to get kids to try out for volleyball and now we’re getting kids that are playing year-round volleyball.” “Key for us is we’re just one big family; we all love each other on and off the court and I think that really translates to our games,” Zimmer said. “You want to encourage everyone and keep this program rolling, so we need to hype up everyone.” “All of our guys are expected to play any position that coach puts them in, and I feel that a lot of our guys do a good job at doing that,” Brumm said. “If we win every game for the rest of the season, that’s our goal. Our goal is to end the season on a win.”
