Churchville residents gather to remember with luminaries by Kristina Gabalski
A
s dusk settled on the Village of Churchville Wednesday evening, August 12, the glimmer of more than 100 twinkling luminaries began to flicker around the Gazebo and Memorial Park area behind the village hall as part of a “Lighting of the Luminaries” ceremony. The ceremony was organized by the Churchville-Chili Lions LEO Club as a time of quiet remembrance and reflection to honor or memorialize those whose lives are affected by cancer. Mayor Nancy Steedman, a cancer survivor herself, explained that the luminaries were originally to be lit during the 2015 Relay for Life at Spencerport High School in June, but the event was cancelled due to threatening weather.
“The Churchville-Chili LEOs Club sold the luminaries to set out that evening,” Steedman said. “But the event was cancelled because there were severe thunderstorms all over the place. We saved the luminaries and the LEOs have set them up here.” More than $4,000 was raised by the C-C LEOs through the sale of the luminaries to benefit the American Cancer Society. Marty Molinari, C-C LEO club advisor and 14-year cancer survivor, also spoke during the ceremonies. He encouraged those in attendance to walk among the luminaries consisting of a white bag decorated with the person’s name, illuminated with a candle inside - to, “remember loved ones lost to cancer and honor those for whom the fight continues.”

Heyen’s new book combines art and poems In June one of America’s best-known authors, Joyce Carol Oates, tweeted her followers: “Remarkable new gathering of poems by William Heyen -- Crazy Horse & the Custers. Surreal, soaring poetry and fantastical art by DeLoss McGraw.” Another tweet soon followed: “A fevered imagination has created Heyen’s Crazy Horse & the Custers -- poems that read like snapshots of a vivid American past still living.” Brockport poet Heyen’s poems about the lives of Oglala warrior Crazy Horse from his boyhood on the Plains to his death at Fort Robinson in 1877, and George Armstrong Custer from his West Point and Civil War experiences to his death at the 1876 Battle of Little Bighorn, had made their mark before. His Crazy Horse in Stillness (1996) received the Small Press Book Award, and was praised by Larry McMurtry, author of the Lonesome Dove books, as “a powerful book of poetry showing that the imagining and reimagining still goes on.” In fact, Oates had described that earlier book as “a fantastic meditation that only Heyen might have dared - lyric, tender, appalling heart-rending, unique.” Poet Aaron Kramer wrote at the time, “Heyen [is] our century’s poet of memory and conscience. No reader of Crazy Horse in Stillness can fail to see how powerfully he keeps fulfilling that sacred mission.” And Leslie Marmon Silko, perhaps our most famous Native American author, wrote: “The old spirits don’t bother with just anyone; usually, poets who try to invoke the indigenous spirits of the Americas fall short. With Crazy Horse in Stillness, it’s as if the old spirits of the Great American Plains took possession of William Heyen and ‘rode’ his poetry on a journey of a thousand years into the past and into the future.” And now, two decades later, Silko has responded to Heyen’s new book, Crazy Horse & the Custers, with another eagle whistle endorsement: “Now the cycle of poems is complete and encompasses the history of the Americas. In Crazy Horse & the Custers, Bill Heyen’s poems flash across glimmering quantum plains to illuminate fierce truths about the invasion and the eventual retaking of the Americas. I smile every time I think of this book.” Heyen’s 1996 collection was published by Rochester’s BOA Editions. Crazy Horse & the Custers, which

selects from that book and includes 128 new poems, is published by Nine Point Publishing in Maine, but there remain Rochester connections. This new book’s cover bears a painting by Oklahoma artist DeLoss McGraw that is in the permanent collection of Memorial Art Gallery. Thirty-two other paintings by McGraw in response to Heyen’s work appear in this book. When many of these were first exhibited at MAG in 2000, Director Grant Holcomb wrote that McGraw’s paintings, “with their deeply saturated grounds of Prussian blue, ultramarine and black, bespeak a melancholy and darkness that is part of the American experience.” Heyen, the author of more than William Heyen 30 books, is a retired Professor of English/Poet in Residence at The College at Brockport, former Senior Fulbright Lecturer in American Literature in Germany and Guggenheim Fellow and recipient of awards from the NEA and the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, winner of the University of Rochester’s Andrew Eiseman Award and the Literary Artist of the Year Award from Writers & Books. Upcoming is a limited letter-pressed edition of baseball poems -- on the Babe (when a baby, Heyen bounced on Babe Ruth’s knee), Mickey, Billy, Casey, and Whitey. Also upcoming are a volume of selected and new Holocaust poems called The Candle (Heyen’s Shoah Train was a finalist in 2004 for the National Book Award) and a third volume of the journal he has been keeping since he was 24 (he’ll be 75 in November). On Wednesday, August 12, 54 people gathered at the Hamlin Public Library for a Hometown Hero program. Many were on hand to personally cheer for long-time library clerk Cheryl Ingham, who donated 36 inches of hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths. But there were other heroes as well. Four local stylists, Courtney Ritchie and Robin Donahue of Hair NV in Hamlin; Cindy Lutwiller of Shear Emotion in Hilton; and Georgina Toates of Georgie’s Tool & Dye in Hilton donated their time and talents to cut ponytails and give fresh new haircuts. Heroes came in all ages with hair of all colors. The youngest was five and the oldest was 68. A total of 24 ponytails were donated and each participant was awarded a Hometown Hero certificate. Additionally, Anne and Ron Klein and Ozzy Ladalfa of the Brockport Breast Cancer Plus Other Women’s Cancer Support Group shared early cancer detection tips. This year’s nationwide summer reading theme was “Every Hero Has a Story” and while there were many

Remembering Gaze Realty team’s Slo-Pitch victory Almost 40 years ago, a softball team that I played for accomplished a most amazing feat -- winning a “one of its kind” -- a SloPitch World Championship! In September of 1975 the United States Slo-Pitch Softball Association, led by local USSSA leaders Frank and Al Ciacca, hosted the first ever “Class C” World Championships at Scottsville’s Athletic
Softball Complex. Sixty-four teams from all over the United States (the furthest being from California) entered this event as the U.S.S.S.A. previously had only a “Class B” World Championship. Gaze Realtors of Brockport stunned this strong field by winning seven straight games and in the process upsetting pretourney favorites, Price’s Restaurant from
Gaze Team members at a recent reunion recalling their Slo-Pitch victory. From left to right, Jim Cox, Dave Thomas, Jim Gaze, Max Robertson, Kip Best, Woody Rowcliffe, Harry Tufano, Jack Gaze. Provided photo.
The Gaze Team in 1975 after their win. Front row (l to r) Bob Marsden, Kip Best, Bob Webster, Jim Gaze, Woody Rowcliff, Dan Beebe. Back row, (l to r) Dave Thomas, Harry Tufano, Max Robertson, Frank Connell, Jim Sauberan, Rick Page, Bob Amis, Jim Cox, Kevin Ryan. Provided photo.
Virginia, in the semi-finals 6-4. Gaze was the first team from Rochester and New York State to win a USSSA Class C World Championship as more Rochester teams would win in the years that followed in various divisions from Classes A,B,C,and D. The Gaze team was led by future Rochester Softball Hall of Fame members Harry Tufano, Max Robertson, and Rick Page. National ASA and USSSA Hall of Fame member, Tommy Castle, even umpired the final game of Gaze’s most surprising run to the 1st Class C Championship. Max Robertson (OF) was named MVP of this event and teammates Bob Webster
(2B) and Dave Thomas (P) were named to the All World Tournament team. On Thursday, August 6, Gaze Realty owners Jim, Sue and Jack Gaze hosted a long overdue picnic to celebrate the 40th anniversary of one of Rochester’s Slo-Pitch Softball’s most unlikely champions. Nine of the original Gaze members enjoyed an evening of laughter and reminiscing of that terrific weekend of almost 40 years ago. Each member received a commemorative polo shirt and championship ring. Dave Thomas Gaze Team Member

Don graduated Pittsford H.S. in 1949, worked at Eastman Kodak for 37 years, served in the U.S. Army in postwar Europe, was a life member of the Spencerport Fire Department. In retirement, he became a special-needs school bus driver. He donated his body to the U of R for educational purposes. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Wilbur Rogers Selander Wilbur Rogers Selander died at age 85 on August 16, 2015. The cause was complications of Parkinsons Disease. He lived with his wife Ruth in Mount Pleasant, SC. He was an avid golfer, a devoted fan of soccer, including the Charleston Battery, and a lifelong follower of the New York Giants. Bill was born in Summit, NJ on August 10, 1930. He was the oldest child of Wilbur Clarence Selander, police chief of Springfield, NJ, and Marie Dolores Rogers, a bookkeeper and homemaker. He graduated from Jonathan Dayton High School in Springfield, and studied music at Maryville College in Tennessee. He joined the US Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War, where he played clarinet and saxophone in the Army Band. Following the war, he completed college at Montclair (NJ) State, and became a history teacher and high school principal. He earned his Masters degree from Columbia University and Ed.D. from Rutgers University. In 1957, he married Joan Pantoliano and they had four children. They moved from New Jersey to Rochester NY in 1969, so he could take a position as Principal of E.J. Wilson High School in Spencerport. He was affectionately called “Doc” by the staff and students there. He retired in 1991, soon after Joan’s death from cancer. Bill and Ruth Holowach met at Stafford Country Club and married in 1993. They were both widowed, shared a love of golf, and were devoted to each other. They moved to Mount Pleasant in 1995 to take advantage of the mild year-round weather, joining Snee Farm Country Club. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Holowach Selander; sister Jeanne Selander and brother Guy Thomas Selander; four children: Kristine Selander Gordon, Wilbur Robert Selander, James DeWitt Selander, and Kathleen Selander Elli; two stepchildren: Lynn Holowach Badenhausen and Stephanie Holowach Riva; and twelve grandchildren. The family will hold a private service. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel. Memorial donations can be made to the Parkinsons Research Foundation, 5969 Cattleridge Blvd Suite 100, Sarasota, FL 34232 or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK 73123, in his memory. A memorial message may be sent to the family by visiting our website at www.jhenrystuhr.com.

politically speaking Republican Primary Candidate: Michele M. Smith Bergen Town Clerk I ask Republican residents of Bergen for their vote on Thursday, September 10. For the last nine years I have served as the Bergen Town Clerk and I am the endorsed Republican candidate. I have enjoyed serving the residents of Bergen and believe I perform my duties in a knowledgeable and professional manner. In 2014 I saved the town $2,700 by limiting deputy time and only expending $3,100 of $5,800 budgeted. I anticipate similar savings for the 2015 and future budgets. I have implemented the use of credit cards to assist residents and I also provide hunting, dog and marriage license services. The Town Clerk’s office is open on Saturdays and available after hours upon request. Please remember to vote on Thursday, September 10. The polls are open noon to 9 p.m. Michele M. Hamlin-Clarkson Herald and Suburban News West Edition - August 23, 2015 15
Ogden townhouses/apartment project gets preliminary OK by Kristina Gabalski During a long and unusual meeting, members of the Ogden Planning Board August 13 gave preliminary site plan approval to Green Wood Park, LLC, to construct 62 townhouse units and 14 apartment buildings (eight units each) in a development to be located near the northwest corner of Whittier Road and Westside Drive. The vote - at the end of a meeting of more than three hours - was split: 4-2, in favor, and came after a initial vote of 3-3. Board member Linda DelRegno changed her vote after being reassured by developer Don Riley of Green Wood Park LLC/Mark IV Development Corporation, that her concerns would be accommodated before a vote on final site plan approval. DelRegno said she was concerned over the number of townhouses in particular. “It’s too dense,” she said and requested that townhouses planned for the edges of the development be eliminated. “We will re-work it ... pulling away the townhouses,” Riley said of the site plan. Members Mary Lou Hetzke and Tom Coburn cast the two no votes in the second vote. Hetzke said the development could mean 400 more people residing in the neighborhood. “Four hundred people in a residential area is out of character,” she said. Riley noted the development complies with the town’s Comprehensive Plan. The preliminary approval was given with conditions - including that the developer must work with adjacent landowners in regard to landscaping along the perimeter of the project, and must also address concerns raised by town officials.
Town Engineer John Freel and Highway Superintendent David Widger expressed concerns over drainage issues, but Freel said those issues could be addressed with the engineer of the project. During a public hearing which preceded the vote, all 16 people who spoke were decidedly against the project, citing traffic volume increases, concerns over drainage, loss of mature trees and privacy and light pollution from streetlights in the development. “This is not the neighborhood all of us bought into,” one resident of Westside Drive said. Residents who spoke live in the Whittier/Westside/Allendale area. Evelyn Riaza noted that many families have lived in the neighborhood for years. “They made Ogden what it is today,” she said. “This is so many apartments in such a small space. Security for families will be affected. Please take that into consideration.” Another resident of Westside Drive said he has had accidents trying to back out of his driveway due to the already high traffic volumes in the area. He said it can take him several minutes to back out of his driveway on the way to work and additionally was concerned about the housing development backing up to his home. “I don’t want to look at peoples’ townhouses. I don’t want to see anybody behind me,” he said. Town officials said the density levels are within town limits and Planning Board Chair Gary Parker noted the developer has provided a traffic study which concluded that traffic at all intersections with the development (at Whittier, Westside and Allendale) would continue to operate at an acceptable level with an increase of three seconds added to the normal delay. He explained that developers must improve drainage in the area as part of the project. “For those who would rather view the wild,” he said of those concerned about townhouses which would back up to their properties, “I can understand.” Chairman Parker added that the developer will add landscaping to ease the change from an open, natural area to one that has housing. Planning Board Member Marc Robinson, who voted yes, said there are already similar developments in the town. “We have approved several with the same criteria in Ogden. It isn’t new for us,” he said. The project is expected to come before the Ogden Zoning Board as developers say they plan to request variances to reduce set-backs in the front for townhouses, something they say will help to pull the buildings farther away from neighbors adjacent to the perimeter of the development.
EARLY DEADLINE

4:00 PM on Wednesday, Sept. 2nd. Holley Rotary Club bids farewell to exchange student Holley’s outbound student, Claudia Drechsel, has left for her year in Austria. Before leaving, Claudia stopped by the club to share where her new home is, the makeup of her first host family, and where she will be attending school this year. The club, thanks to Rotarians Robert Miller and Tim Towne, presented Claudia with a ski parka emblazoned with the club and Rotary logo. Claudia hopes to use it as she skis the Austrian Alps. Above, Club President Jeff Martin and Claudia show off the club jacket. Provided photo.
