Boost your family’s energy for back-to-school season (StatePoint) It’s time to gear up for a new school year.

That means buying supplies and clothes, coordinating schedules, and adjusting to new routines.

All the preparations can leave you feeling drained, but with the proper fuel you can ensure your family has the energy needed to ace each day.

Meal plan Kick off the year by creating a meal plan, which will help you stay organized, maintain a good diet and avoid repeat trips to the store. To simplify shopping and preparation, put together a list of favorite meals and snacks; then group according to common ingredients. Use a dry erase calendar, spreadsheet or online template to plot out menus one week at a time. Then, draft a grocery list and stick to it. This will help you pass up the chips and cookies for more energy-boosting options.

When you arrive home, immediately wash and prep produce for the week to make it that much easier to make nutritious meals all week long.

Start the day off right Wholesome breakfasts provide a pick-me-up in the morning and throughout the day. Squeeze some oranges for fresh juice and a vitamin C boost. You can make a pitcher

each weekend to last several days. Serve with homemade granola bars for a satisfying start to the day.

mild dehydration can slow down body systems, resulting in fatigue. Carry a large container of water to drink throughout the day.

Dinner delight Continue beneficial eating habits at dinner. Add extra vegetables to your menu with a squash cheese sauce for a new take on whole wheat macaroni and cheese. Or bake a wholesome pizza using fresh pesto or a white bean purée as the sauce.

Instead of hitting the couch after dinner, complement healthful eating by taking a walk with your family. Exercise provides a natural endorphin boost, giving you extra motivation to maintain healthy habits.

Most gardeners probably wish they had more space in which to garden, but there are many benefits to gardening in small spaces and ways to make those spaces appear bigger than they are.

A smaller space is typically easier to maintain and weed, meaning smaller gardens work well for those who either don’t have the time, or would rather spend time with family and on activities other than weeding and maintaining a garden.

There are several ways to make a small garden look larger. One solution is to make it an extension of your home. If you can, plant your garden so that it can be accessed directly from a room in your home, allowing you to move from the interior space to a deck or patio. Tie the indoor/ outdoor spaces together with similar color schemes and materials. A deck railing can be painted to match moldings in the room and decorative elements like wicker can be used both inside and outside, for example.

Color itself can make your plantings seem larger. Reds, oranges and yellows are hot colors and jump out at the eye. They make a planting look larger because hot colors look closer than they really are. Cool colors like blue and green recede from the eye and make things look farther away.

To make a small garden appear larger, use cool colors in the center and back and hot colors in the front.

Keep scale in mind. Large plants can make a space feel small, but smaller plants

with small leaves will create an open, airy feeling and make a garden look larger.

Layer plants - top story, middle and bottom layers will help you to maximize available space. A trellis can train top story plants and middle layer plants should include those that prefer filtered light such as Solomon’s seal. Plants on the bottom layer should be shade lovers like astilbe.

If it is possible, try to hide a portion of the garden - so that the whole garden cannot be viewed at once. The mind will imagine there is more garden beyond what is seen creating the sense of a larger space.

Even a border jutting out at one point can help to create a visual block.

If you use paving or decking, use smaller-size elements, but don’t be afraid to use an element liberally. A large amount of one element tricks the eye into thinking it’s a larger space. If your garden is very narrow, run decking or paving lines from side-to-side to make the space look wider.

Run decking lines and paving lines from top to bottom to make a “short” garden look longer.

For vegetables in small spaces, don’t forget about raised beds in addition to containers. Raised beds can be made from wood, stone, concrete block or brick, or you can simply mound up the soil.

Locate raised vegetable beds where water is readily available and in a spot which receives at least 4-6 hours of sunshine each day.

Soap Box World Champion Hilton’s Karlye Murphy wins first place in World Championship Soap Box Derby Stock Race

by Grace Griffee Ten-year-old Karlye Murphy’s Hilton home is filled with her trophies; and the latest one is taller than she is. On July 25, Karlye competed in the 78th Annual World Championship Soap Box Derby Super Stock Race in Akron, OH and came home with the top prize – making her a world champion.

With 56 wins this year alone, Karlye is already a seasoned racer. She began competing three years ago and won her first race on her seventh birthday making her the youngest in the world to win a rally race. Her sister, Corrinne Chick, now age 21, started the family tradition of racing and Karlye followed in her sister’s footsteps.

Karlye and her dad, Jeff Murphy, work side-by-side assembling her car and the family travels together, sometimes as far as Virginia, to race on the weekends. At the race, he and Karlye factor in temperature, weight and Karlye’s position in the car before she heads down the hill. Karlye’s mom, Amy Sawyer, waits at the bottom of the hill and then helps load the car

onto the trailer to take back up the hill.

At Derby Downs in Akron, both sets of Karlye’s grandparents, Tom and Lee Sawyer from Hilton, and Jerry and Sue Murphy from Spencerport, were on hand to see her race down the 989-foot track. Karlye’s competition was 94 other national champion racers as well as racers from as far as New Brunswick and New Zealand.

Karlye became eligible for the World Championship when she won the Local Super Stock Championship at Durand Eastman Park. “To win the Local was pretty special and something we never thought we’d be able to do,” said Murphy.

Rochester, considered one of the top 10 soap box race cities in the country, holds six rally races and the local race each year, in addition to a Super Kids Race for physically challenged youth and the Quad A Race for inner city youth.

Youth ages 7-20 children are eligible to race in one of three divisions – stock car (ages 7-13), super stock car (ages 10-18) or masters (ages 13-20). For more information, visit the All American Soap Box Derby, Region 9 website at aasbd.org.
