C-C’s Glor named Compeer Rochester Section V Coach of the Year Compeer Rochester recognizes the importance of coaches and teachers who mentor young people in schools. Every year they choose one coach who exemplifies the principles of mentorship, sportsmanship and commitment to students and community, on and off the field of play. This year, Churchville-Chili’s Varsity Cross Country and Indoor Track coach Paul Glor was named the Democrat and Chronicle’s Compeer Rochester Section V Coach of the Year for 2014. “I feel very honored to be recognized for coaching and working with students here at Churchville-Chili,” says Glor. “I enjoy coming to school every day and having the chance to be a positive role model for others. It isn’t ‘work’ when you get a chance to do something you love, and I truly love teaching and coaching.” The award was presented by D & C Sports Editor Steve Bradley and Syracuse University Orange legendary head men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim at the 25th annual Ben R. Giambrone/Compeer Rochester Sports Luncheon, which was attended by 500-plus local sports professionals, educators, community supporters and local dignitaries. Glor was nominated by ChurchvilleChili’s Athletics Director Mike Murray,

who says, “Paul is an outstanding role model and highly respected by students. He’s extremely organized, always positive; a one-of-a-kind person deserving of this and many other awards.” In addition to his coaching duties, Glor is advisor to the National Honor Society, Peer Tutoring Advisor, serves as a Mentor Teacher, runs intramurals, chaperones athletic events, is on a great number of committees, and goes above and beyond the call of duty on a daily basis. He serves as an instructor for First Aid, CPR and AED trainings; organizes and directs the James Francis/Andrea Kofahl 5K race; is involved in the Ogden Community Beginner’s 5K Training Program and is a Race Assistant for the Set Free 5K at Roberts Wesleyan College, where he also serves as an Adjunct Professor. “It was a great experience getting to meet Coach Boeheim and to be a part of the Compeer luncheon,” says Glor. “Their organization does a really nice job helping students and adults in the community find positive mentors. There are many positive things happening here at ChurchvilleChili related to mentoring and I am happy to help be a part of some of them.” Provided information

Recently, the Spencerport community lost Joyce Lobene. Mayor Lobene was loved and respected by all members of the community for her dedication to the village and its residents. Ferris-Goodridge Post 330 of the American Legion lost a friend, supporter and true Patriot. Joyce was always there for the American Legion, whether it was for a patriotic holiday or a Legion function. She was a devoted and valued member of our Auxiliary. She was an ardent supporter of all the programs sponsored by the Legion, Ladies Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion. More important, was the example Mayor Lobene set for the Spencerport community, by the patriotism and love of country she displayed during the entire year. The Mayor began a program of hanging military banners from village lampposts in honor of each of Spencerport’s sons and daughters who have dedicated their lives to military service. These placards that show photographs and the names of our honored military members now hang proudly throughout the village. These banners are constant reminders of the sacrifice our men and women in uniform are making to preserve our freedom. These banners now have sprung up in many communities throughout the country. As Mayor and citizen, Joyce was always an ardent supporter of Law Enforcement and the Fire Department. Her initiation of the Patriot’s Day ceremony at the Village Gazebo in September exemplifies this compassion for the civil servants as they go above and beyond the duties of normal citizens. Joyce Lobene set an example for all of us, by her actions as well as her words. She was a kind and faithful servant of the people. Madam Mayor, Ferris-Goodridge Post 330 of the American Legion led by Post Commander Donald Sisson salutes you. We thank you for your service to our firefighters, police officers, our veterans, and to the men and women serving in our Armed Forces. We especially ask God to Bless You for your service to the Village of Spencerport and to the United States of America. Rest in peace. Joseph E. Marhatta Past Commander, Monroe County American Legion

WN’s Family Guy by Mark Ball

A Legend in My Own Mind Do my kids look up to me? Well, sure. Why don’t you believe that?

I looked around to confirm that my ears weren’t deceiving me. There on the opponent’s sideline stood my favorite alltime coach. Immediately I called my wife Leslie.

I mean we all have our humbling moments, those times when a chink in our armor is exposed. Even in those moments, I’m still Dear Ol’ Dad defender of the universe and the guy who can get snacks down from even the highest of shelves.

“He is here!” I whispered it into the phone as if it was a secret too good to be true.

There was that one time I questioned how my kids viewed me. My two youngest daughters were putting on a play in the living room that caught my attention, I only happened upon it accidentally while heading upstairs to check on the baby.

“Coach Kurz… you know from my MVP season…” I started to retell a story that Leslie had heard at least annually since we first met.

While I didn’t come in at the beginning of the show, it was easy to decipher the main characters. One was “Mom” and she paced back and forth in the living room with a Barbie camera pressed to her ear which was meant to be a cell phone. She was talking frantically to someone, stopping every few laps to glare at the other character who was lying on the couch.

“Oh, Honey don’t do anything to embarrass yourself or Riley,” Leslie said.

The “Mom” character would bark at the person on the couch who would respond with platitudes like “Okay dear… and Sure thing Honey” and then immediately roll over and begin snoring. This response was repeated over and over. Just as I started to decipher who the character on the couch was supposed to be the baby let me know that I was needed upstairs.

But he did. He even called me by name. I told Coach that I was here to cheer on my son, and pointed Riley out to him. We agreed to introduce the two of them after the game.

Sometimes I even have help appearing heroic before my kids.

“I’m sorry. Who is here? Are you in danger?” Leslie asked.

“I’ve got to go see if he remembers me,” I said.

Her words of warning began to trail off as I was already halfway over to him. Just as I reached him, I was struck with the fear that Coach Kurz might not recognize me, as 26 years had passed since I last kicked a soccer ball.

It was a great game and Riley was all over the place making great plays. I couldn’t wait to introduce them. We met Coach over by his car. He gave Riley all sorts of positive feedback, just like I remember from my childhood. Coach so loves the game, but he has always loved his players more.

My son Riley played recreation soccer this summer. Riley has such heart when he plays, and he is truly talented. The best part is that he is following in his father’s footsteps. Far be it from me to brag, but I was MVP of the Hamlin Recreation Orange Team in 1988.

He praised Riley for his quickness, for the way he hustled all over the field. And then he looked at me, and I knew it was the moment I had been waiting for, to be placed on a pedestal before my boy.

One warm summer night, I was sitting on the sidelines watching Riley warm up for a game when a familiar noise caught my ear. It was the guiding voice of the greatest coaching influence of my childhood. Without even looking I knew that it was Coach Doug Kurz.

“Your father was a special player,” Coach said. “In my 35 years I have never had the opportunity to coach a player as slow as him. You must get your speed from your mother.” Riley laughed. We all shook hands and went our separate ways.

Among his many awards in my personal Hero Hall of Fame, Coach Kurz led the famous Hamlin Recreation Orange Team. While the mighty Orange were winless that season, it was still the pinnacle of my athletic career. No coach after Coach Kurz ever recognized my inner superstar, and sadly the soccer world lost a legend-in-the-making at the age of 11.

When we got back in the house, Riley turned to me and asked, “Dad, can you get a water bottle down from that shelf for me?” “Sure thing son,” I said. Yep. My reputation is still intact. My kids will always look up to me.

by Joe Reinschmidt Saturdays in the fall often were spent doing chores that were intended to get the fields ready for the coming year. One of them was gathering and burning the vines from the tomato and potato fields. They would be gathered into small piles and when they were reasonably dry we’d burn them. Yes I said BURN-fire and smoke. It’s a no-no today. For my parents, Joe and Anna, this was the method they had learned from experience, and in Agricultural school, which was important in controlling diseases that lingered in the vines and would be detrimental to the crops planted in those fields next year. It wasn’t a hard job and we kind of liked, as most children do, that we could “play with” fire but also had the responsibility of keeping an eye on them. There was some fun involved, too. Besides finding and eating the occasional edible tomato that eluded the pickers, we could have tomato wars with the other leftovers. Ideally, you wanted a big one that was quite rotted to have the most impact on your target. Of course if they were “overdone” they would fall apart in your hand as you tried to throw them. It was sort of like a backfire. This was one time we could get quite dirty without a reprimand from Anna. In the potato field it was a different scene. Very few of them were rotted and there were some perfectly good

thinkstock

ones that were missed (perhaps deliberately) when we harvested them. Those we put onto the pile of vines before lighting it and came back later to feast on baked potato. Depending on the intensity and length of the “burn” they would often be black with burned skin but inside there was a well-done tasty potato. Ideally they would have been better with some butter, but that was hard to carry around in your pocket. Salt and pepper on the other hand could be carried and we had them with us. Of course we had to remember which piles had potatoes in them, but we usually found most of them, as we stayed in the field until all fires were out. Burning vines isn’t practiced anymore and is considered illegal by some agencies. Spraying with toxic chemicals is supposed to be better, but I wonder about it.

truly benefit many,” said Benham. “Every child should have memorable comforting stories to read in the hospital where a feeling of home and healing is needed,” also said Benham. The hospital is expanding and with an average of 100

children coming in daily, the need for normalcy is great. Monetary contributions are welcomed and still being accepted. Email Lori Benham at Usbornebooksny@aol.com.Lori for information on how to donate .Provided information

Hailee Weber, a fifth grader at Northwood Elementary School, was recently awarded the “Do The Right Thing” Award from the City of Rochester for saving a child from drowning. Provided photo.

Northwood student recognized for “Doing The Right Thing” Hailee Weber, a fifth grader at Northwood Elementary School in Hilton, recently was recognized by the Rochester Police Department with a “Do The Right Thing” Award. Hailee was nominated by her teacher, Jessica Thompson, for her bravery and quick thinking. This past summer, Jessica was swimming in her neighbor’s pool when the neighbor’s 14-month old granddaughter fell in. Jessica quickly grabbed the baby and got her to safety before the adults in the area could even respond. Her quick reaction may have saved the baby’s life. The “Do The Right Thing” program is designed to seek out the outstanding youth in the community who have distinguished themselves as role models for their peers. They achieve this status by committing “random acts of kindness” or by simply “doing the right thing.” Hailee was recognized during an award ceremony at the City of Rochester Public Safety Building. Deputy Chief Fred Bell presented Hailee with her award. After the ceremony, Hailee, the other award recipients, their families and nominators enjoyed a pizza party. Provided information

10 Suburban News North and South Editions - November 23, 2014 Prayer To The Blessed Virgin

Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3X). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. (The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. This prayer must be published and the favor will be granted). A.M.

(Never known to fail) Oh most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin assist me in my necessity. Oh Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein, you are my mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh show me herein you are my mother, Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3X). Holy

Our forebears were familiar with death at every stage of life and viewed it as an inextricable part of life, which made the death of a

Although more than 70 percent of homebuyers are using the internet to gather information about making their next home purchase, most will rely on a Realtor to guide them through the sales transaction process. That's why Realtor web sites are a popular virtual location for starting a home search. Buyers can investigate many aspects of the home buying process on Realtor sites, which typically showcase local listings and allow you to browse through their inventory of homes at your leisure. A good site offers photographs of every listing and information about the home. If you are excited about a listing, most sites invite you to email the agent for more information, or to make an appointment to see the property. Other features of buyer-friendly sites allow you to calculate monthly mortgage payments. Some give information about local schools, shopping and recreation in the area. Using the internet is an excellent way to start the hunt for your new home.
