Holiday Savings! A Holiday Tradition: Family Christmas Pajamas December 24, 2023
Issue No. 52
by Teresa Schreiber Werth People have many unique traditions revolving around Christmas. Some involve food like favorite cookies or a traditional Christmas breakfast or dinner. Some traditions involve hiking through the snow and cutting the Christmas tree, or decorating with tree ornaments that hold a special meaning. The practice that recently captured my attention is the Family Christmas Pajamas. We know a family that has managed this feat for almost 20 years, through three kids. Just the thought of trying to know everyone’s sizes, finding options, choosing the style and design, purchasing and actually having them laundered and ready to go on Christmas Eve, is more than I can imagine doing once, let alone every year! And I have marveled at their success, making them my all-time winner of Christmas holiday traditions… until last year, when I was shown a photo of a very large, local Christmas family gathering – I’m talking about 26 people from three months to almost 70 years of age, all wearing the same Christmas pajamas at their Christmas Eve gathering! Hilton HS inducts 75 students into Hilton Chapter of National Honor Society Parents, Board of Education members, administrators and staff gathered on December 5 at Hilton High School to honor the induction of 75 students into the Hilton Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS). Advisors Laura Schrenker and Tony Ambrose welcomed attendees to the ceremony before Principal Dr. Jeff Green took the stage to thank parents, guardians and family members for their part in helping to mold the students being honored. “You, inductees, are going to be the difference makers of your generation. Making a difference is a lifelong pursuit that consists of countless daily decisions,” he told the inductees. “Embrace the opportunity to be the difference makers in our community.” This year’s keynote speaker, selected by the students, was Mr. Michael Ellicott, Health and Introduction to Teaching teacher, and boys varsity soccer coach. A native of Manchester, England, Ellicott talked about the value of grit and hard work, and even gave inductees a small piece of ultra fine grit sandpaper to remind them not to forget about their grit. “My hope is that you all continue to build
your grit, that you continue to persevere through those tough times in life, find your way around those bumps in the road,” he said. “But tonight, take the time to reflect on and remember how your perseverance pulled you through a lot of hard work and has brought you to this wonderful occasion to be recognized in front of your peers, your family and the school community.” National Honor Society officers – President Bronte Jones, Vice President Maria Beghini, Secretary Abigail Hilburger, and Treasurer Shawn Nordstrom – reviewed the four pillars of membership, which are scholarship, service, leadership and character. Each inductee was called up on stage to have a parent place an NHS pin on their lapel and to sign the registry. Students then lit a candle and together recited the NHS oath. The newly inducted members are: Sara Amend, Katherine Barry, Sofia Beghini, Gianna Bianchi, Jazz Bianchi, Brodie Bostley, Julia Brone, Ava Brugno, Mary Burke, Peyton Carter, Tyler Coughlin, Giovanni D’Alonzo, Madi-

Rochester Kwanzaa Coalition celebrates 35 years of cultural enrichment The Kwanzaa Coalition, a cornerstone of cultural enrichment in Rochester for over 30 years, is gearing up for its annual seven-day festivities. The theme of the celebration this year is Kwanzaa 2023: Harambee Let’s Pull Together. Founded by Dr. David Anderson, the Rochester coalition is dedicated to presenting Kwanzaa to the community, fostering a sense of unity and cultural awareness. The Coalition stresses the importance of bringing the community together to honor and witness the seven principles of Kwanzaa in action – unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith. Individuals, businesses and the wider community are encouraged to get involved and connect with one another at the Kwanzaa celebrations. Kwanzaa, initiated in 1966 nationally by Dr. Maulana Karenga, is the premier cultural celebration of the African American community. The Coalition aims to highlight and nurture the positive impact in the community by raising cultural awareness through events at six different locations each year. Held in libraries, museums and cozy community spaces, these events enhance the reach and accessibility of Kwanzaa celebrations.
Activities include: •UMOJA – December 26, 4 to 7 p.m., City Hall Atrium, 30 Church Street, Rochester •KUJICHAGULIA – December 27, 4 to 7 p.m., Phillis Wheatley Library, 33 Dr. Samuel McCree Way, Rochester •UJIMA – December 28, 5 to 8 p.m., Memorial Art Gallery, 500 University Avenue, Rochester •UJAMAA – December 29, 4 to 7 p.m., The IdentoGO, 803 West Avenue, Rochester •NIA – December 30, 4 to 7 p.m., Rundel Library, 115 South Avenue, Rochester •KUUMBA – December 31, 6 to 9 p.m., Montgomery Center, 10 Cady Street, Rochester •IMANI – January 1, all day, celebrate at home with family and friends. “Kwanzaa intersects everyone. It is a sharing of positive culture, especially important for Black people,” says Delores Jackson Radney, member of the Kwanzaa Coalition. Looking forward, the Coalition aims to increase Kwanzaa awareness through community workshops and expanded outreach to urban classrooms. pretty much wears old t-shirts and sweat pants to bed year-round! I asked the co-ordinator of this feat, Minnie Rivera, how she pulled it off? Her story is just as complex as I imagined (which is why this will NEVER happen in my family)! The first week of December 2022, Minnie walked into Walmart one day NOT looking for pajamas. As she began to cruise the aisles, she noticed several styles of holiday pajamas on display. Something in her mind clicked! Minnie has had custom t-shirts made for more than a few events, so she was no stranger to a “big project” on a tight timeframe. And, right then and there, Minnie decided to make look-alike Grinch pajamas happen for her entire (immediate and extended) family for Christmas 2022. What may have sounded simple at first, was anything BUT! Once Minnie was able to get a list of all the sizes she needed (no small task), she began scouring area Walmarts to complete her pj purchases. She was calling stores and asking for items to be held, traveling between Greece, Gates and Brockport, searching through racks and piles. In the end, it took her right up until Christmas Eve to complete her shopping list. In the meantime, she was decorating her Spencerport home (the party venue) in all things Grinch. She says, “It was the grinchiest site you ever saw!” There was an inflatable Grinch to greet guests, Grinch table coverings and dinnerware, Grinch window and door decorations, even a Grinch shower curtain in the bathroom! By her count, the project involved six families comprised of 16 females and 11 males. There were spouses, children, siblings, cousins, and girlfriends,
all willing to forego their personal Christmas style for a Grinch family Christmas in matching pajamas! Minnie says that people arrived at her home wearing their pjs and kept them on all day! One minor exception, was one of her brothers-in-law, who, in true Grinch spirit, eventually pulled his favorite Buffalo Bills shirt over his Grinch pajama top! What has become of the matching Christmas pjs? She doesn’t know about everyone else’s, but Minnie still has hers. And the biggest surprise
was finding a Grinch dog sweater for her son, Jonnie’s, little dog Mia. Her idea was an over-the-top success! When asked if she would do this again? Minnie said, “Yes! Safety tips to help everyone remain safe on the roads The holiday season is here, many people will attend holiday parties, and AAA Western and Central New York wants to remind drivers to have a plan in place to get home safely after a night of festivities. As an advocate for traffic safety, AAA has supported more than 50 years of public education efforts against impaired driving. Yet, the work is not finished. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), every day, about 37 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes — that’s one person every 39 minutes. In 2021, 13,382 people died in alcohol-impaired crashes – up 14% from 2020. Those deaths were all preventable. Drug-impaired driving is also a major concern for traffic safety. AAA research shows that marijuana can impair drivers in a variety of ways, and marijuana use is becoming more commonplace with the legalization of
recreational marijuana in 24 states including New York. While marijuana usage may be legalized, it remains illegal to use the drug and drive a vehicle. People who use both alcohol and marijuana are some of the most dangerous drivers on the road – they are significantly more likely to speed, text, intentionally run red lights, and drive aggressively than those who don’t, according to data from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. “Alcohol, marijuana, prescriptions and over-the-counter medications all lead to impairment and create dangerous, life-threatening situations on our roadways when users get behind the wheel,” said Anthony B. Spada, AAA Western and Central New York President and CEO. “AAA’s message to drivers: you cannot drive safely while you are impaired. Please plan ahead this holiday season to avoid tragedies and celebrate safely.”
said Karen Worcester, executive director Wreaths Across America. “We have more than three million volunteers across the country and a third of them are children. This mission and the events happening today provide the opportunity to teach kids about what freedom is.” For centuries, fresh evergreens have been used to symbolize honor and a living tribute renewed annually. Wreaths Across America believes the tradition represents a living memorial that honors veterans, active-duty military, and their families. When volunteers say the name of a veteran aloud while placing a wreath, it ensures they live on in our hearts and memories and are always remembered. For more information about the year-long mission and ways to get involved in your own community, please visit www.wreathacrossamerica.org. AAA’s tips for traffic safety and impaired-free driving: For drivers •Choose a designated driver before you go out. •Use a ridesharing service or a local taxi service. •Stay with a friend or book a nearby hotel room if you plan to use alcohol or drugs. For hosts •Offer non-alcoholic drink options and never serve minors. •Stop serving alcohol well before the party ends. •Remind guests to plan ahead and designate a sober driver. •Don’t be afraid to take car keys away from guests who are too impaired to drive. •Help arrange alternate transportation or accommodations for guests who need it.

American unity on display on Wreaths Across America Day National Wreaths Across America Day took place at over 4,225 participating locations across the country, including Arlington National Cemetery. Local locations included Churchville Creekside Cemetery, Riga Cemetery, and Hillside Cemetery in Holley. Volunteers remembered our nation’s heroes as they said their names aloud, honoring over three million veterans this year. Wreaths Across America would like to thank the communities, dedicated volunteers, and generous sponsors for coming together in unity and supporting those who have protected our freedom. Each person has played a part in the year-long mission to Remember the fallen, Honor those who serve, and Teach the next generation the value of freedom. “What I love most about this day, and this mission, is that it is so much more than just the placement of a wreath. The wreath is the catalyst, it brings together communities – families and strangers – to learn about those who have served and sacrificed,”

Unite NY launches “More Voices More Choices” campaign Non-partisan Unite New York will kick off a new “More Voices, More Choices” advocacy campaign in January of 2024 aimed at enacting meaningful democracy reform in New York state. The organization and its members are devoting time and significant financial resources to push for the passage of bills to create term limits, citizen ballot initiatives, increased ballot access, ranked choice voting and nonpartisan primaries. Unite NY conducted four separate polls as part of the organization’s Voter Empowerment Index in 2023 that demonstrated these reforms are wildly popular with voters and will now turn the organization’s efforts to working with lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to make these changes a reality in New York State. Unite NY Executive Director Tim Dunn said, “It’s not a bold statement to say that democracy is a pretty good thing and while Unite NY believes that more democracy is even better, our democracy in New York is not one that has voters flocking to the polls. That’s why we are so excited to launch our new ‘More Voices, More Choices’ campaign. Unite NY leadership and members are now stepping up to put more time, money and energy into a campaign that will fight for reforms that give everyone a voice of hope to share with our friends and neighbors. We know there are true leaders in our State Legislature who already support these reforms and our organization is excited to work with them to build a bipartisan coalition that will make these changes a reality.”
Beginning early in 2024, Unite NY will be mobilizing its thousands of followers to call on Albany to embrace the “More Voices, More Choices” campaign to shift more power to the ballot box. The ultimate goal of the campaign will be to reform our electoral system to drive greater participation and make New York’s democracy an example for the nation. The campaign will use a variety of tactics, including dedicating significant financial resources to fund a digital ad campaign, direct mail, and walking the halls of the Capitol to lobby legislators to embrace democratic reform. The organization’s reform agenda has five pillars: •Term limits for Statewide Office: In the last several years resignations and indictments have led to some of the most powerful elected officials leaving office in disgrace. Term limits stop offices from becoming a permanent seat of power – and more than 80% of New York voters support implementation. •Citizen Ballot Initiatives: In about half the states in the Union, citizens can petition issues directly on the ballot for an up or down vote; this is already done at the local level. Nearly three-quarters of New York voters want the ability to directly decide on critical issues like abortion, criminal justice, redistricting, and ethics reform. •Increased Ballot Access: In 2020, in the dark of night and under the guise of COVID relief, former Governor Cuomo convinced the Legislature to triple the number of signatures needed to get on statewide
ballot. The result is a system supported by less than 40% of voters that requires a candidate to gather more than 1,000 signatures a day to qualify for the ballot, while chosen candidates of the two parties don’t have to collect any. This significantly higher threshold effectively eliminated five minor party choices for voters. •Instant Runoffs/Ranked Choice Voting: The implementation of Instant Runoffs in primaries in New York City drove an increase in voter turnout of more than 130,000. More than half of voters in New York City approve of this reform that empowers voters, dismantles the spoiler effect, and shifts power from party bosses directly into the hands of the people. •Nonpartisan Primaries: More than 3.4 million unaffiliated voters cannot participate in primary elections which are consistently plagued by low turnout. Establishing non-partisan primaries has the support of more than two-thirds of New York voters and Unite NY supports Assemblymember Robert Carroll’s legislation (A. 479) that would establish ranked choice voting statewide while providing 3.4 million unaffiliated New Yorkers with a real voice by allowing them to participate in primary elections, something 40 other states permit in some form. The More Voices, More Choices campaign will also include a series of events for Unite NY members and will initially run throughout the 2024 legislative session. Learn more at www.UniteNY.org. Poinsettias bloom in a holiday display at the Erie County Botanical Gardens in Buffalo. Poinsettias are native to Mexico and offer lots of bright color inside during the darkest days of the year. Photo by Kristina Gabalski.
History of the poinsettia by Kristina Gabalski Poinsettias are the number one flowering potted plant in the United States – that according to several sources I came across preparing this column, including Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. With the Christmas holiday here, if you are celebrating, and especially if you are a gardener, you probably have at least one poinsettia adding festive color to your home. Poinsettias are native to Mexico and were a popular plant well before Europeans arrived. The plant’s botanical name is Euphorbia pulcherrima and the indigenous name is Cuetlaxochitl (kwet-la-sho-she). Colorado State University Extension says the plant was prized by indigenous kings and the Aztecs used the colorful bracts (modified leaves surrounding small, yellow flowers) to produce a reddish-purple dye. The milky-white latex was used for medicinal purposes. After the coming of Europeans, Franciscan missionaries in the 16th and 17th centuries used the plant to decorate Nativity scenes as they noticed it blooming during the Advent and Christmas seasons. The plant made its way to the United States in the 1820s when the first U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, Joel Poinsett, sent some plants to his home in South Carolina and shared his find with other plant enthusiasts. The common name Poinsettia is derived from his name. Poinsettias became a popular houseplant and holiday tradition
after plantsman Paul Ecke, Sr. grew poinsettias as a cut flower in the Hollywood and Beverly Hills area of California in the 1920s. The Ecke family later moved to Encinitas, CA, and began to focus on producing fieldgrown poinsettia mother plants which they shipped throughout the country via railroad box cars. Colorado State University notes that in the 1960s, Paul Ecke, Jr. took poinsettias on The Tonight Show and the Bob Hope Christmas Specials to help increase the popularity of the plant. His efforts paid off and at the same time, the Ecke family moved to greenhouse production, creating the need for improved cultivars. Active breeding of poinsettias began in the 1950s with the goal of creating cultivars that would retain their leaves and bracts for longer periods. Mikkelsen of Ohio, Heggs of Norway, the Ecke Family, and the Fischer Family – a German breeder – contributed many cultivars over the years. Today we have many beautiful choices of poinsettia cultivars, and new ones are released each year. Modern cultivars last longer in the home, bloom earlier, require fewer resources for production, and include more color selections and better quality plants for consumers, Colorado State University says. Enjoy this holiday week and enjoy your poinsettias – they prefer moderately moist soil and temperatures between 60 and 70 degrees F. Remove the foil sleeve from the pot to water, the roots can suffer from rot if the plants sit in water-soaked soil.

Speed Striker toy found to contain high lead levels Research and testing conducted by the New York Department of State’s Division of Consumer Protection (DCP) found the bottom of the Speed Striker Remote Control Car to contain 2.5 times the allowable paint and surface coating lead level established by the federal Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). The Speed Striker Remote Control Car was purchased at Five Below and is distributed by 1616 Holdings, Inc. The DCP contacted the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to request a national recall of the Speed Striker Remote Control Car containing lead and asked Five Below to remove the toy from its shelves and discontinue its sale. The DCP also contacted the distributor 1616 Holdings Inc. requesting it cease the distribution and sale of the Speed Striker Remote Control Car in New York State and nationwide. If anyone has the Speed Striker Remote Control Car at home, they can dispose of it by simply throwing it in the garbage, or they can choose to set it aside in a safe area and await any future recall instructions, which may or may not include a refund component. Hazards in children’s products are often latent and unfortunately not known until someone is hurt. Accordingly, the DCP urges consumers to follow simple safety tips when shopping to best ensure the toys purchased are
safe for children: always purchase ageappropriate toys; read labels carefully and take note of all warnings; keep toys in good condition and dispose of broken toys or repair them right away; make sure any fabric toys are labeled as flame-resistant or flame-retardant. Lead is a chemical substance often used in production of painted toys, furniture, and toy jewelry; cosmetics; food or liquid containers; and plumbing materials. According to the New York State Department of Health, lead is a metal that can harm children when it gets into their bodies. Lead can harm a young child’s growth, behavior, and ability to learn. It can also cause anemia, kidney damage and hearing loss. The Speed Striker Remote Control Car contained 230 ppm of lead, well above the federal limit of 90 ppm. For more information on Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention, visit https://www. health.ny.gov/environmental/lead/. Consumers who identify a recalled product in the marketplace, or require more information about toy safety and recalls, are urged to call the Consumer Assistance Hotline at 1-800-697-1220. Consumer complaints can be filed at any time at www.dos.ny.gov/consumerprotection. Provided information and photo
New York State Military Museum seeks veterans’ stories for oral history collection The New York State Military Museum and Veterans Research Center in Saratoga Springs has resumed its veterans’ oral history collection program which was put on hold during the COVID-19 Pandemic, and is seeking interview subjects. Museum docents Fred Katz and Wayne Rozen conduct the interviews under the direction of James Gandy, the museum’s librarian, and archivist. Interviews can be conducted in person at the museum, or they can be conducted over a Zoom call for those who live outside easy driving distance. To date, the museum has conducted 1,275 interviews with veterans of conflicts ranging from World War II to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The interviews are posted on the New York State Military Museum’s YouTube channel, and can be seen at https://www.youtube.com/@newyorkstatemilitarymuseum6253/videos The interview collection program resumed earlier this year. Since then, four oral history interviews have been conducted. The interviews can range from 45 minutes to several hours,
Milton A. Eager, a World War II veteran, is interviewed by NYS Military Museum staff on January 3, 2008. Eager, a sergeant from Newburgh, fought in the South Pacific.
depending on how much the veteran wants to say, according to Gandy. To participate in the program, veterans should email the museum at nysmm.oralhistory@gmail.com. Museum staff will send back information on how to participate, along with a four-page service questionnaire. The form helps the interviewers prepare for an informed discussion and becomes part of the historical record of New York citizens’ service in the military. Veterans can also download information and the questionnaire directly by going to the oral history page on the museum website, https://museum. dmna.ny.gov/research/oral-historyproject. Once the interview audio or video recording is completed, it is digitized and posted on the museum’s YouTube channel. Currently, there are 2,158 interviews – about half conducted by other entities – posted on the museum YouTube channel. All of these interviews are about New Yorkers and their military service. The New York State Military Museum and Veterans Research Center is administered by the New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs. The museum is a repository of 16,326 photographs and photographic collections, 4,345 archive and manuscript collections, 16,322 books and articles, and 28,984 artifacts – including 2,305 military flags, 700 firearms, and a variety of uniforms, medals, artwork and personal objects, and a Sherman tank – which tell the story of New Yorkers at war. The museum’s website, https:// museum.dmna.ny.gov/, allows access to thousands of digital photographs and 1,093 documents, books, magazines, and records. Provided information and photo

PHHS hosting talk about upcoming solar eclipse The Parma-Hiton Historical Society will host speaker, Dan Schneiderman, on Monday, January 8, at 7 p.m., in the Ingham Room at the Hilton Community Center for a presentation titled “The Solar Eclipse and its Impact on Western New York.” Schneiderman is the Eclipse Partnership Coordinator at the RMSC (Rochester Museum & Science Center). During the presentation, he will discuss the science and history of solar eclipses, the impact the eclipse will have on our region, and how to prepare for this extraordinary astronomical opportunity which is coming April 8, 2024. Rochester will be in the direct path of a total solar eclipse for the first time in almost a century. A total solar eclipse occurs when a portion of the Earth is engulfed in a shadow cast by the Moon which fully blocks sunlight. All are welcome to attend the event on January 8 to learn more. ‘Tis the season to give blood or platelets When blood products are fully stocked on hospital shelves, patients don’t have to wait for critical care. Giving blood or platelets with the American Red Cross can help those in need make more holiday memories with loved ones. This is a busy time for many. Holiday gatherings, travel and seasonal illnesses can all impact donor availability, making it hard to collect enough blood and platelets. Unfortunately, trauma patients in the emergency room, those undergoing cancer treatment and new parents in need of lifesaving transfusions can’t take a holiday break. Donors are needed every single day. Those who come to give blood, platelets or AB Elite plasma between December 18, 2023, and January 5, 2024, will receive an exclusive Red Cross long-sleeved t-shirt, while supplies last. To extend a special thank-you to donors for helping address the need for blood, platelets and plasma during the critical post-holiday time, those who come to give in January 2024, National Blood Donor Month, will be automatically entered for a chance to win a trip for two to Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas. Details are available at RedCrossBlood.org/SuperBowl. Making and keeping appointments throughout the month can help safeguard the national blood supply into the new year. Schedule an appointment by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Provided information

The firm tracks brand awareness and consideration with local market data retrieved from the interviews. CNB has received many accolades for its performance throughout the years. YWCA Rochester & Monroe County CEO invited to the White House YWCA Rochester & Monroe County CEO Dr. Myra Henry was invited to the White House alongside other members of YWCAs of New York State (NYS) to participate in Communities In Action: Building a Better New York on December 14. The Biden-Harris Administration created the Communities In Action series to give every state a platform to address its unique needs and priorities. The agenda for Building a Better New York will include discussions on infrastructure, clean energy, and healthcare costs. YWCA Rochester and YWCAs of NYS are unified through their mission to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. The associations’ policy priorities for this half-day session included health, economic, safety, and racial justice initiatives. “It is truly an honor to represent YWCA of Rochester and Monroe County at the Biden-Harris Communities in Action conversations at the White House,” said Dr. Henry. “YWCA of Rochester & Monroe County’s work in housing, addiction recovery and community engagement is directly impacted by the policies and funding from the federal, state and local
levels. It is important to be in the room to celebrate investments by the Biden-Harris administration that have truly lifted the lives of the women and families we serve as well as highlight areas that still need federal dollars to enhance the lives of some of our most vulnerable neighbors.” Dr. Henry explains that, “YWCA’s across the country and around the world provide critical human and social services for women, children and families. YWCAs of NYS make up 10% of our network and as a strong state sisterhood we advocate for access to services, affordable childcare and affordable housing among other important issues that impact the lives of women and families in New York State.” YWCA Rochester and Monroe County provides affordable housing and shelter for women and families who are faced with personal crises, including homelessness and teen pregnancy. Their goal is to empower women to regain control of their lives and get on the path to a healthy, successful future. Season’s Readings!
Homesteads for Hope is a feeling - Peter’s Story As Homesteads for Hope wraps up another season, the people of this local organization have so much to be grateful for. In the last year, their “Community Farm Experience” has been able to accomplish so much to help families and individuals with disabilities – from opening their doors to new program participants, members, volunteers and school districts, to completing the “Forever Homestead” project. The newest community center offers a door always open, expanding the non-profit’s impact 12 months a year – nearly seven days a week. All of this was only possible because of the endless support that the Greater Rochester area has shown, yet there is much more work to be done to help families and individuals of all abilities. Take Peter, for example, who joined the farm’s programs over the summer and simply never left. As someone who utilizes a wheelchair with limited control of muscle movement, Homesteads for Hope’s staff were honored at how quickly he and his family jumped on board and trusted them to provide the right accommodations for him to participate on the working farm. With his creative mind and keen eye, Peter found a passion for flower gardening and arrangements right away, and even hosted his own U-Pick Workshop towards the end of the season.
As we turn the page to another holiday season, we’d like to take a moment to thank you, our loyal readers and advertisers, for your trust and support. We hope this Christmas delivers all the good news you’ve been hoping for and more.
Happy Holidays from all of us at

Breakfast with Santa in Brockport The Kiwanis Key Club hosted Breakfast with Santa at the Brockport High School cafeteria on Saturday, December 16. Key Club is the high school service organization of Kiwanis. Key Club members have assisted the Kiwanis Club during events like their Craft Fair, so Kiwanis members were happy to pitch in and help with the Key Club’s holiday event. The breakfast was well attended, and patrons were treated not only to a fine breakfast of pancakes, sausage, orange wedges, juice and milk, but also had the opportunity to visit with Santa and enjoy live music. Provided information and photos.
Homesteads for Hope has accommodations that allow Peter to participate on the working farm.
Peter joined Homesteads for Hope this summer and developed a passion for flower gardening. When asking Peter how he feels, he stated, “I like coming to the farm because the things I do here make me feel accomplished. I like that everyone can come together and we can be ourselves, and I know I have a purpose here.” Not only is he feeling valued, he also has the farm to call home, and the same goes for his family. Because of the work of the Homesteads for Hope team, Peter’s family is now surrounded by a caring community. He continues to grow his purpose and feels included in goals for the future. There are countless more stories like Peter’s, of individuals who are seeking a place to belong. Homesteads for Hope is currently serving over 600 families who are involved in programs, memberships, and volunteer experiences with thousands of community visitors each year seeking to get involved. Since opening the Forever Homestead Community Center, the opportunities keep knocking and the farm needs support to keep opening the door. Homesteads for Hope has plans to expand their membership experience, mission-based programs, farm agritourism and new partnerships with other non-profits, agencies, and school districts. They want everyone to experience what Peter feels when he’s at the farm. This requires operational support to expand program offerings, hire additional staff and continue to ensure the 2024 experience is better than ever before. Visit www.HomesteadsforHope.org to learn more about how to get involved. Provided information and photos
Brockport HS choir students perform with RPO Eight members of the Brockport High School Choir – Parker Christy (senior), Kiersten Gingrich (sophomore), Kristina Irene (junior), Mairi Linden (sophomore), Madison Kulp (junior), Tess Neilans (senior), Kaylee Stephens (senior), and Ava Ruggles (junior) – were selected to sing with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra in their 30th Anniversary, Gala Holiday Pops. This year’s celebration was the best yet, with Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik, the Festival High School Chorale, and Rochester’s favorite storyteller, Jay Stetzer, narrating “The Night Before Christmas.” The Gala Holiday Pops, which was started by Maestro Tyzik 30 years ago, has become one of Rochester’s favorite holiday traditions. The event celebrates the winter holidays and provides an opportunity for students to showcase their talents. They sang alongside professionals, and in front of an audience of thousands, making this a once-in-alifetime experience. Provided information and photo
