COLORING OUR PERCEPTION In Western cultures, black is generally accepted as the color of death and mourning. No one better exemplified this tradition than Queen Victoria, who mourned the death of her husband, Prince Albert, by wearing black mourning clothes for the remaining 40 years of her life. It may also serve to further influence our perception of death to know that some Eastern cultures and religions associate white with death and mourning. To these cultures, the color white represents new beginnings and a completion in the circle of life. White speaks of the end of one life and the beginning of another. Interestingly, green and blue are the colors

(BPT) - So buying a new home tops your list of New Year’s resolutions. As you picture the big moment - the one where you pull up to your dream home in your moving truck, sprint up and unlock your front door - you probably understand there’s something you need to do first. You need to get your finances in shape. Just like those who make resolutions to run a marathon, making this big investment starts with a plan. Runners know that if they run a certain distance each day, it gets them closer to accomplishing their goal. “The same is true, in many ways, when it comes to buying a home,” says Eric Hamilton, president of Vanderbilt Mortgage and Finance. “Before taking on a loan, many home buyers find they need to build their ‘financial muscles’ and establish ‘healthy’ money habits.” By following a few tips to reach financial fitness goals, you, too can achieve the goal of home ownership. Do those daily sprints People who reach their fitness goals begin with a look at their current habits and then make a plan to replace them with better ones. The same is true for homebuyers. First, look at the spending choices you’ve been making, and review three to six months’ worth of bank statements. Consider what is necessary and what needs to cut back. The goal is to trim the fat in your budget so you can use the extra money to reduce your debt and increase your savings. Crunch your debt Take a look at your debts and consider the monthly payments you make. Are there any debts standing in the way of making a house payment affordable? Those are the ones you want to knock out with an accelerated payment plan, using the money you freed up by cutting back on unnecessary expenses. Try focusing on one debt at a time, paying close attention to the ones with the highest interest rates to pay off first. Beef up your credit score The good habits you exercise today will make all the difference on your interest rate later. Put in the extra work to raise your credit score. Your credit score pulls together many details from your past and current debts as well as other financial factors, and helps lenders determine your creditworthiness. Making the effort to raise your score is worthwhile because shaving off even one-quarter of a percentage point from a mortgage loan can potentially save you
thousands of dollars in interest over the life of a 30-year mortgage. A credit score factors your history of on-time payments, the amount you owe on your debts, the type of credit you have, the age of that debt and any recently opened new credit lines as well as other factors. You may be able to improve your score and get the lowest possible interest rate on a home loan if you follow these “reps” every month: pay all your bills on time, don’t close old credit card accounts and don’t open new lines of credit. Increase your intake of savings Even when paying down debt, it’s still a good idea to start a small savings plan so you have some cash to fall back on if, say, you need to go to the doctor or get new tires for your car. Start by opening a savings account and set up automatic transfers each month. Even with $50 a month, you’ll have $600 in one year, which could bail you out of a number of small emergencies. Eventually, once your debts are paid off, you can divert those payments right into savings, which also can build your down payment for that new dream home Prepare for the big event All these steps lead to one main event: buying a home. Once you meet those smaller goals - following a budget, eliminating debt, raising your credit score, and saving for your down payment - you’re ready for the final push toward home ownership. First, figure out how much home you can afford: look at home prices in your area, use an online loan calculator to estimate your payments, and go through your budget. Then gather up the financial documents you’ll need, including proof of employment, bank statements and tax statements. Finally, choose a lender that is right for you. Vanderbilt Mortgage and Finance, Inc. has many programs that can fit many kinds of buyers. Perhaps you’re getting your first mortgage, have perfect credit, and in some cases, less-than-perfect credit. All loan programs are subject to credit approval and restrictions apply. Contact Vanderbilt for details. If you are interested in learning more about Vanderbilt, visit, http:// www.vmfhomeloan.com. Vanderbilt is a Berkshire Hathaway national housing lender that has been in business for more than 40 ears and has helped families just like yours find the right financing program. “Following these habits can be challenging from a motivation standpoint,” Hamilton says. “It takes patience, but once you’ve followed the steps to get financially healthy, it is a very rewarding experience.”

Comments Genesee Community College: A gift of hope The holiday season is upon us again, a time for gifting, for giving. It’s a special time when we all get to look back, reflect, be thankful, and appreciate the happenings of the year that has passed. I find myself in that position right now like few times in my life. I graduated from Kendall in 1977, was accepted at Syracuse but fell short at making it happen. Wasn’t much for a young man going on around here back then so in October of 1978 off to Texas I went. Twenty-nine years later I finally had my fill of the world and returned to my place of origin in 2007. You know for all the wonderful, amazing people and places he must have experienced, eventually Marco Polo went home too. Upon returning to Western New York, employment became an issue as the business I was involved with in Texas, for the better part of two decades, was practically nonexistent here. I might as well have been a palm tree salesman. And one outside the industry that I was knowledgeable in my experience didn’t seem to matter anywhere else. After four jobs in three years enough was enough. I had to do something ... something besides suffer and whine about it that is. The plate was mine and I so needed to step up to it. Doing “what and “where about it becoming my questions to answer. I decided my “what to be a higher education and my “where at Genesee Community College. I needed a ticket up so I went all in with my hopes, Texas Hold’em style for me of course, and pinned them on punching that ticket here at GCC. So in the spring of 2011 I turned myself into a 52-yearold college freshman in search of a Business Administration degree. My ticket was duly punched. Only time will truly tell how valid my choices, and of course there is nothing like ringing your own bell, but I can’t help but feel that I chose well on both counts, especially the “where aspect. In my time I’ve set foot in a lot of different places of business. My ability to quickly “read a place of business is quite keen. Never in my travels have I dealt with a firm the likes of GCC. A place where every ounce of energy and effort expended is focused on a single goal. This is a place where no one wears their badge of honor anymore or less important than the next person, regardless of their position in this affair. The “show that is performed here on a daily basis is cast with a set of characters that are cut from the most uncommon of cloths. Consummate professionals, many of whom I know for a fact could be plying far more financially lucrative seas. Yet they choose not to. Why? Before you read any further I ask you to please take a moment and really think about that one. This facility is no less a jobsite than the commercial sites I used to frequent and it didn’t take me long to see what really goes on here either. What this place is all about. What it really has to offer all of us which is so much more than a higher education. I’ve got news for you, the educational aspect, that’s just the iceberg’s tip around here. Following is my answer to the question from the previous paragraph. I pray that it at least begins to do justice for all I’ve been gifted, to all those who make sure that the opportunity is always available, and that the thought is what really counts. You see it’s all I have to offer.

sports & recreation Cadet freshman Hill registers first varsity double-double by Warren Kozireski Tah-jae Hill scored 26 points and added 11 rebounds as the freshman led Hilton to a 77-60 win over host Churchville-Chili in boys’ basketball. It was his first doubledouble as a varsity player coming in his ninth game. The first quarter featured six lead changes as Saints junior Eric Lewis was scoring from both inside, outside and the free throw line. Hill hit a three-pointer for the Cadets as the buzzer sounded to knot the game 21-21. Hilton’s defense then took over limiting the Saints to 16 total points over the next two quarters while the offense racked up 39 points. “It was tough to stay in front of him and he shot better than we thought he would from the outside,” Hilton head coach Troy Prince said about Lewis. “And he was unselfish and found the open man. Then we decided not to let him get the ball.”
Joe Lipani hit a trey early in the second quarter to give the Cadets the lead for good and he added seven more points in the stanza. The third was Hill’s as he scored half of Hilton’s 22 points as they built a 23 point advantage. The Saints came alive in the fourth with Lewis scoring 11 points including two field goals off of steals, but it was too late. In addition to Hill, Lipani finished with 13 points and four assists, Johnathan Letta had nine points with four assists, Morgan Kunigan also scored nine and Ian Schwartzmeier added eight to the Cadets attack. Lewis continued his early season success for the Saints averaging a double-double. He had a game-high 29 points with 13 rebounds while JV call-up Garland Akins had ten points with seven rebounds and Dillon Strine added five points.

Holiday baking brings generations together at Gillam Grant Center by Kristina Gabalski A first-time event December 12 and 13 at the Gillam Grant Community Center in Bergen brought youngsters and seniors together for some holiday cookie baking fun. “Baking with the Gillam Grant Grandmas” gave young community members a chance to experience making holiday cookies from scratch with “Grandma” Eunice Ely and “Grandma” Jean Mucher, who said they volunteered

for the event to, “get seniors working with kids and do more outreach.” Ely and Mucher helped elementaryage participants make chocolate crackle and snickerdoodle cookies. Each participant took home a plate of cookies to share with family and lucky friends. Tracey Phelps, Gillam Grant Learning Center Coordinator, said she hopes the baking will become a regular event with sessions for other holidays in addition to Christmastime.

Holley students interact with community during Holiday Season In late November, Holley High School students volunteered to set up the Elementary Primary Gym for the Holley Days of Shopping event on December 1 and 2. The students worked with Social Worker Samantha Zelent to bring donated gift items to the Elementary School, sort them into categories and arrange them on tables, floors, shelves and the stage so that district families could shop for holiday presents. The shopping event helped 53 families, including 141 children, receive gifts this year. Any remaining items went to the Community Center. “A big thank you to those who donated their time, money and/or gifts to make this event so wonderful,” said Erica Bailey, Elementary School social worker and coordinator of Holley Days of Shopping. “All who attended were very appreciative of the opportunity. Several stated that
without this support, their children would not be receiving gifts this year. I am proud to be part of a wonderful district that truly cares for its community.” Many of the students who volunteered their time at the shopping event are part of the new Interact Club at Holley Middle School/High School (MS/HS), sponsored by the Holley Rotary Club. About 30 students in grades 7 through 12 have joined in its first year. They focus on volunteer work at both local and global levels. They have already volunteered at the Rotary Beefeater dinner, and shopped and wrapped presents for seven Holley children, using money provided by the Rotary Club. They assist teachers at the Elementary School, and they will help with a spaghetti dinner in January to benefit a Holley family.
District families shopped through items donated by Holley High School students to give as gifts for the holidays. Provided photo. The club plans to volunteer at a soup kitchen soon and conduct a prom dress drive in the winter for the MS formal dance. They’re also planning a book drive in the spring, where books will be shipped to children in another country. Rotary member John Heise is the Rotary Club liaison and Holley MS/HS Social Worker Samantha Zelent and Art Teacher Evinn Neadow are the staff advisors. “Whatever volunteer work the students want to do or ideas they have to help, we make it happen,” said Zelent, who is Heise’s daughter and very familiar with Rotary Club efforts over the years. “This is a great opportunity for students to interact with the community, and it empowers them to help meet some of the needs they’ve identified in their environment that need support.” Support has also come from Holley alumni to provide donations for the Holley Days of Shopping and to sponsor about 30 students this holiday season. “Former students who have graduated in the last five years have been contacting me asking how they can help,” said Zelent. “Many of them are still going to school or just getting started in their careers, but they still want to give back. Isn’t that fantastic? We live in such a caring community.” Provided information

Get out & grow! White Christmas
by Kristina Gabalski
I would like to start this week’s column by wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! As much as I don’t like driving in the snow, I know the white stuff can be an important part of the holiday season for many people, and from a gardener’s viewpoint, it can even be a boon to the garden. I’m not sure as I write this if we will have a white Christmas or not this year, but from the way my yard looks at the moment and the forecast for the next few days, I’d say it’s a pretty good bet at least some of the snow will be around for Christmas. That “blanket” of snow really does act as a blanket for your gardens and landscape. It is a wonderful insulator which can protect plants and soil as well as trees and shrubs from frigid temps and howling winds. According to the National Gardening Association, without snow cover, cold temperatures can deeply freeze the ground and damage root systems of shrubs and trees. Without insulation, water in plant cells can freeze and damage cell walls. Winter winds can dry-out plants when there is no snow cover, and even plants in containers can benefit from a blanket of snow. Snow additionally protects your plants from the cycles of freezing and thawing that can heave them out of the ground. It’s the shape of snowflakes that makes them such great insulators. Small spaces in each snowflake are filled with air and as they pile up, cold temperatures cannot permeate as deeply into the snow, protecting plants below from very cold temperatures, the National Gardening Association (NGA) says. Additionally, the NGA says snow acts as the “poor man’s fertilizer,” pulling nitrogen and sulfur from the air as it falls. Later,
Snow (and Christmas lights) cover the needles of a blue spruce tree in my yard. K. Gabalski photo. when the snow melts, these elements are released into the soil and then used by plants. Nitrogen is especially essential to plant growth. Not surprisingly, snow also conserves moisture in the soil and provides water for the soil as it melts. The University of Delaware Cooperative Extension says even dormant plants lose moisture as water evaporates through their branches. Evergreens - which keep their foliage year-round, are at an even greater risk of injury from lack of moisture and can suffer from winter desiccation (drying out). If you have left root crops in your garden, snow cover can sometimes keep the ground from freezing, making it easier to harvest. Snow has many benefits to the gardener, but it can be damaging when heavy snowfall weighs down branches and splits or breaks them. Destructive animals such as moles and mice can cause damage to plants and trees below the snow, chewing on bark and eating stems. Rabbits can reach up into trees for bark when snow levels become quite deep. But there is another benefit (my personal favorite) to a snowy garden and landscape - enjoying its beauty on long moonlit nights from the warmth of my home.

& Fitness Time for a Year-end Investment Review?
As the year comes to a close, you may want to look back on your investment picture of the last year. Specifically, consider three areas: performance, investment mix and contribution level. First, study your investments’ performance – and try to look beyond the “raw” return numbers. How did your portfolio perform relative to earlier years? Were your returns on track to help you meet your long-term goals? And were your return expectations realistic, based on your investment mix and the market environment? Second, look at your investment mix – is it still appropriate for your goals, time horizon and risk level? Over time, this mix can become unbalanced, so you may need to adjust it. Finally, review your contribution level. Are you putting in as much as you can afford to your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored plan? Did you boost your contributions when your salary went up? We’re just about ready to turn the page on the 2016 calendar. So, as you review your investment decisions for the past year, try to determine what worked, what didn’t – and what you can do to improve your results in 2017. This article was written by Edward Jones for use by your local Edward Jones Financial Advisor.

I have been using nicotine lozenges for about 2 years to help me avoid smoking, but now I’m developing lots of cavities. Someone said the lozenges might be the problem, but aren’t they supposed to be sugar free? You are correct, nicotine lozenges are technically sugar free. However, they do contain a sugar substitute called mannitol. This ingredient is a sugar alcohol and while it contains fewer calories than cane sugar, it is quite likely that bacteria are able to feed on it to produce the acids that cause tooth decay but at much lower levels than would be true if it were pure sugar. While more research is needed it appears that when used frequently over long periods of time, the cumulative effect can lead to significant amounts of decay. Additionally, the lozenges also leave a somewhat sticky film on the teeth that could also cause plaque and bacteria to adhere to the teeth, further contributing to decay. Generally the lozenges are recommended to be used in decreasing amounts over a period of only about 12 weeks so we don’t often see these types of problems unless they are used for longer periods of time. My best advice if you are using these products long term is to make sure you brush thoroughly and frequently. Rinsing and drinking water frequently throughout the day will also help to remove some of the acids that cause the decay. Regular dental visits to check for any new decay will be essential as well.

Sigillo Chiropractic Why Chiropractic is Good For You Maybe you’re feeling perfectly fine. Maybe you’ve got some aches and pains. Chiropractic treatment can help you in either case. It has preventative as well as curative values. Chiropractic is predicated on treatment that does not include medication or Dr. Christopher J. Sigillo, D.C. surgery. Before you opt for either of those, see what a chiropractor might be able to do for you. At the center of chiropractic philosophy is the belief that a properly functioning body can cure many ailments. By keeping your spine in line and letting nerves function freely, chiropractic can aid the effectiveness of your body’s immune system. Cardiovascular, respiratory and digestive systems will work better if all nerves are unimpaired. Stress will be relieved if all your body’s parts are moving and functioning properly. One result will be greater emotional stability. Chiropractors do not engage solely in spinal manipulation. They can advise you on lifestyle issues like diet, exercise, ergonomics and other factors that we all encounter in our daily lives. Talk with your chiropractor about a blueprint for a healthier life. Churchville-Chili athletes proudly sign National Letters of Intent Three of Churchville-Chili High School’s most outstanding athletes were recently awarded athletic scholarships from their chosen colleges. Cross Country/Track champion Anna Kostarellis will head to Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio to compete with the Xavier Musketeers. Katie Cosgrove will join the Blue Devils lacrosse team at Durham, North Carolina’s Duke University. Nina Orlowski will play lacrosse for the Dolphins at Le Moyne University in Syracuse, New York. Senior Anna Kostarellis has been a member of the Saints Varsity Cross Country, Indoor Track and Outdoor Track and Field teams throughout her high school career at Churchville-Chili. She currently holds or has broken 21 school records. Anna was also Churchville’s female athlete of the year in 2015 and has won Section V titles and qualified and participated in the state finals and nationals in multiple seasons. A member of the school’s National Honor Society, Kostarellis excels in academics as well as in sports.
A four-time all-Monroe County firstteam pick and repeat AGR selection for lacrosse, C-C’s Katie Cosgrove is also an outstanding soccer player. As a freshman and sophomore, she played a major role in leading the girls’ lacrosse team to division titles in both 2013 and 2014. She has also lead the team in scoring over the past two seasons with 57 goals and 15 assists in 2015, and 56 goals and 13 assists in 2016. With 170 career goals and 229 career points, Cosgrove has an excellent chance to become the school’s all-time leader in both categories this upcoming spring season. Lacrosse midfield defender Nina Orlowski came to Churchville-Chili from Hilton last year as a junior. She has become a welcome addition to the C-C family. Her ability to adapt quickly to a new team and new program was impressive. Her flexibility as a player has been key to the Saints’ success. Last year, Orlowski played multiple positions and excelled at all while keeping a positive attitude and doing whatever was best for her team. Provided information

Comments Grandson Jacob, a special blessing to the Milner family (In the December 4 issue, Bev and Jack Milner of Sweden Village contributed to the “Gifts of a Lifetime” feature. Their gift was grandson Jacob, a special needs child. Here is the full story about Jacob and his impact on the family). On November 4, 1998, our grandson Jacob was born prematurely, with critical heart problems, a myriad of G.I. issues and Down syndrome. It was quite an adjustment having a medically frail child in our family and we all struggled with the fear and challenges we were faced with. However, as we watched Jacob grow, it was very evident that he was having more of a positive impact on all our family members than we ever thought possible. With his first steps and first words, we were ready to declare a national holiday. Jacob, his two sisters, and parents live in Chili. Over the years, we have watched Jacob’s community rally around him and his whole family with love and support. He has given his sisters and his cousins a different perspective about life in general and how we have all come to realize that, after all, we are all more alike than we are different. Jacob has had so many wonderful opportunities in his life to date: a trip to Sesame Street World provided by the Dream Factory; throwing out the first pitch at a Red Wing’s game; being an honorary bat boy for a Red Wing’s game; dropping the puck at an Amerk’s game; and, being an honorary captain at the Brockport Blue Devil’s Homecoming game, just to mention a few. Also, if you are ever in the new Golisono’s Children’s Hospital, you will see hanging in the lobby a huge picture of Jacob, his two sisters and Tom Golisono. His mother, Kerri Milner Noyes, was the keynote speaker at the kick-off fundraising celebration to build the new hospital. Because of Jacob’s needs at an early age, she took a class at the Advocacy Center (now called Star Bridge) to understand better the rights of a parent of a child with a disability. She now works there full-time helping other parents on their own journey with a special needs child.
Gathered at the Milner home in Sweden Village (l to r): Jack Milner, Jacob Noyes, his parents Steve Noyes and Kerri Milner Noyes, and Bev Milner. Photo by Dianne Hickerson. We see life in a whole different perspective because of Jacob. He continues to have significant health problems and we have learned to take one day at a time. We don’t sweat the small stuff. Jacob is so full of love and joy that he can raise one’s spirits without being aware that he is doing so. He provided us the impetus to start the Westside Challenger Baseball and Tennis program in the Brockport community several years ago. This has provided many children with disabilities an opportunity to participate in sports. It has also provided our family the chance to meet wonderful people that we never would have had the chance to meet.
Our family is grateful for the material things we have, but they pale in comparison to the 18-year journey we have all been blessed to be a part of. We are all better people for having Jacob in our lives. And, the friends we have made along the way are priceless. Bev and Jack Milner Sweden (Bev and Jack Milner have two daughters, Kerri and Denise. Kerri and husband, Steve, have Jacob and two daughters, Lauren and Haley. Denise Milner Howell and husband, Gregg, live in Akron, Ohio with two sons, Miles and Wesley, and one daughter, Eleanor).
