Sweden to pursue Owens Road sidewalk grant funding The Town of Sweden is seeking public support in order to pursue grant funding for a sidewalk on Owens Road from the existing sidewalk (along the west side of Lowe’s) north into the Village of Brockport and south to Brockport Spencerport Road. Safety is the primary concern, as pedestrian traffic has increased significantly along the heavily traveled roadway. The sidewalk project could be a joint opportunity with the Village of Brockport in order to continue the sidewalk into the Village from Owens Road at State Street and/or South Avenue. In order to pursue the funding, the town needs to gather community support. Residents may submit letters of support to: Supervisor, Town of Sweden, 18 State Street, Brockport, NY 14420, or call 637-7588 for more information. The funding application is due soon, so time is of the essence.
Buy and sell at the Hilton Community Indoor Flea Market The Village of Hilton Community Center will hold an Indoor Community Flea Market on Saturday, April 14 located at 59 Henry Street, Hilton. Spaces are currently available at $20 for a 4’ x 10’ area and sellers keep the proceeds. To reserve a space, pick up an application at locations including Parma Public Library, Mainly Books on Main Street in Hilton, Hilton Community Center (in Village office or Ingham Room), and Parma Town Hall. Make checks payable to Pat Clark and send the application and check by March 30 to Hilton Community Flea Market, 971 Hamlin Center Road, Hamlin, NY 14464. Set up time will be Friday, April 13 from 6 to 9 p.m. only. The Flea Market will take place from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. the next day. Spencerport native helps train the Navy’s best pilots at TOPGUN In Nevada’s high desert is the Navy’s premiere tactical air warfare training center, home to the Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center and it’s Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program, known to the world as TOPGUN. A 2010 E.J. Wilson High School graduate and Spencerport native is part of the Navy’s finest aviation fighter training facility in the world. Petty Officer 2nd Class Jacob Glende is an aviation warfare systems operator working with the NAS Fallon Search and Rescue stationed aboard Naval Air Station Fallon, Nevada. As a Navy aviation warfare systems operator working with search and rescue, Glende is responsible for providing high altitude technical search and rescue capabilities for Naval Aviation Warfighter Development Center, NAS Fallon and the surrounding area as well as specialized water rescue. “I was considering a few options, but ultimately decided to join the Navy because it offered more adventure and opportunities,” said Glende. TOPGUN began 48 years ago with the determination of nine pilots, the skepticism of the government and almost no budget as history would recall. In the early years it turned the tide of a losing air war in Vietnam, revolutionized military doctrine, inspired a Hollywood blockbuster and attracted and trained the best allied pilots and air crew from all over the world. Glende plays a crucial role in the overall mission that flies over 5,000 adversary sorties per year in support of the Navy and Marine Corps Active and Reserve fleet and replacement squadrons, carrier air wings and marine aircraft groups including the United States Air Force, Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard and Canadian Forces. “Nowhere in the world does the Navy have the ability to train as we do in NAS Fallon,” said NAS Fallon Commanding Officer Capt. David Halloran. “The Navy specifically chose NAS Fallon as the location for Top Gun and the Naval Special Warfare Tactical Ground Mobility Training Center because of the desert climate, mountainous terrain, and sophisticated ranges available in northern Nevada. Every Carrier Air Wing and Navy Seal Team is required to receive the essential training provided here prior to being deployed in theater.” According to Navy officials, TOPGUN is highly competitive and exposes Navy and Marine Corps pilots to the

Each pilot is hand-selected for air-to-air and air-to-ground training and subsequently, as a TOPGUN instructor. “Successfully completing rescue swimmer school is an accomplishment I am very proud of,” said Glende. Glende also said they are proud to serve at the center of excellence for naval aviation, training and tactics development. The future of U.S. aviation depends on the Navy’s ability to achieve their vision for defeating tomorrow’s air threats with the support of the ground crews and pilots. “Serving in the Navy means being accountable for all of my actions and always reminds me to strive to be honorable,” added Glende. March Mayhem to benefit family of injured C-C 10th grader March Mayhem again returns to Churchville-Chili on Saturday, March 3, in the Middle School Gym C starting at 1 p.m. This event is the 21st annual Churchville Lions vs LEOs benefit basketball game. This fun and popular event will benefit the family of Logan Biedrzcki. Logan is a 10th grader at Churchville-Chili and a member of the school Ski Team who was severely injured on January 19 while at Bristol Mountain. Logan broke his left leg in three places and suffered a head injury that resulted in a swelling of his brain. He was at Strong Memorial Hospital Intensive Care Unit for five days undergoing intense trauma treatment. He is restricted to home now, where he requires
extensive physical therapy and tutoring to maintain his school work. His parents and older sisters have all had to adjust their schedules to help with this care. Logan’s friends and classmates will be on hand to participate in this fun exhibition where the principle goal is to help his family with the medical expenses involved. All proceeds from this event will be donated to his family. Donations may also be sent to the Churchville-Chili LEO Club at the senior high school address or given to any member of the Churchville Lions Club. All involved are hoping for a similar success story from last year. The 2017 benefit game was for Alex Voglewede who, while entering his junior year, was diagnosed with
Leukemia. After extensive chemotherapy treatments and much tutoring, Alex is now in remission and all set to graduate with his class this June. Alex was an integral part of the school soccer team which went to sectionals last fall, and was named to the All Greater Rochester soccer team. He will be attending college in the fall, where he plans to pursue a career in his dream field of aeronautics. For 21 years the LEO Club has been comprised of students in grades 7 through 12 who have performed a wide variety of community service activities, and is proudly sponsored by the Churchville Lions Club. Spencerport Community Chorus presents Broadway Showstoppers On March 10 and 11, the Spencerport Community Chorus, directed by Darla Bair and accompanied by Sally Martin, will present Broadway Showstoppers with musical selections from a variety of popular Broadway hits. Seventy-four inducted into Hilton Chapter of the NJHS Merton Williams Middle School inducted 74 students into the Hilton Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society on February 14. The ceremony opened with Principal Tracie Czebatol welcoming the audience and inductees. “These students have passion; they have desire; they see beyond the average and the possible,” she said. “They aim to be the very best versions of themselves in every single thing they do.” Danielle Mojsej, Abigail IpenVanZeilen, Madelyn Johnson, Alyssa Hockenberger, Abby Grinnell, Jessica Williams, Joel Morris and Matthew Mastowski participated in the candle lighting ceremony where they described the five characteristics of membership – scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship and character. Advisors Steve Cudzilo and Scott Meagher spoke about each inductee’s accomplishments as they walked across the stage to be congratulated by administrators, receive their pin, sign the registry, and then together recite the oath. Criteria for induction include a 95 percent grade point average, two leadership activities and community service hours.
Collectively, the new inductees contributed nearly 2,000 hours of community service to organizations, such as Foodlink, animal rescue organizations, Apple Fest, Special Olympics, Hilton-Parma Emergency Food Shelf and area churches, just to name a few, in addition to playing sports, participating in clubs, mentoring and many other extracurricular activities. Advisor Meagher began his address to the students with a quote by author Marianne Williamson. “Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.” “We need to get over this believe that greatness is only for a chosen few,” said Meagher. The ceremony concluded with the new inductees handing their parents personal letters of thanks. Ogden/Spencerport officials meet with Canal Corp reps Ogden Town Supervisor Gay H. Lenhard and Spencerport Mayor Gary Penders met with New York State Canal Corp. representatives Thursday, February 15 at the Town of Ogden offices to discuss the controversial clear cutting of the Erie Canal Banks. The meeting provided the following outcomes: The Canal Corp. will not continue any work until a decision is made regarding the legal action taken by the Towns of Brighton, Pittsford and Perinton, to be heard by a judge on February 28 in Wayne County. In 2016, the Canal Corp. conducted a study to determine the embankment condition performed by Rizzo Associates. Rizzo Associates developed a color-coded rating system ranging from crimson to blue (high to low) to assess the condition of the embankment. Should the judge decide in favor of the Canal Corp, contractors will start clear cutting red zones.
The Village of Spencerport is located in yellow and blue zones (moderate to low). Yellow and blue zones will only be trimmed to provide line of site for embankment inspection. Trimming was explained as removing dead or deteriorating trees and brush. Additionally, cutting and trimming must be completed by March 31. The reason for this is due to the State Environmental Act requiring the preservation of vegetation for the Long-Eared Bat. The stumping process for clear-cut areas will be done during the fall of 2018 and any damage to the canal path will be addressed prior to the summer months. The Canal Corp. will be meeting with Supervisor Lenhard and Mayor Penders again after February 28 to discuss a type of vegetation that can be planted at the bottom of the embankment that will not be overly invasive to the banks, but allow for privacy. Spencerport Junior Baseball to hold Challenger Baseball 2018 Inaugural Season Spencerport Junior Baseball is introducing the formation of an SJB Challenger Baseball program. This unique baseball program is structured to meet the needs of all youngsters who have physical and/or developmental disabilities. Players between the ages of 8 and 25 are invited to participate in a fun, family atmosphere each Saturday morning, and they will even have a buddy to assist them when needed. The Challenger Baseball program has been very successful in other communities over the past few years, and SJB is partnering with the originators of this activity to help kick-start this program in our backyard. The fundamental goal of Challenger Baseball is to give everyone a chance to play. To realize that goal, Challenger has two basic rules: every player bats each inning, and every player plays the field. Strikes and outs don’t count; everybody scores and everybody wins. Challenger Baseball participants learn not only the fundamentals of baseball, but also experience pulling together as a team, being cheered on by a crowd, and being encouraged by their peers. All players will receive trophies at an end-ofseason family picnic.
“Stage Whispers” explores GEVA’s “Hornets’ Nest” play readings Theatre can entertain, but it can also make people think and engage with one another. For more than 10 years, Geva Theatre Center has hosted a play-reading series, the Hornets’ Nest, which encourages dialogue not just on stage, but amongst audience members at these one-night-only events. To discuss the series and what they have learned – about theatre and about human nature – Skip Greer, Geva’s director of education, will appear along with Jenni Werner, Geva’s literary director, at the Department of Theatre and Music Studies’ Stage Whispers panel on Tuesday, February 27 at 10 a.m. in The College at Brockport’s Tower Fine Arts Center Black Box Theatre, 180 Holley Street. The talk is free and open to the public. The duo will discuss how audience reactions can potentially affect the playwriting and production process. The next Hornets’ Nest reading takes place on Monday, April 9, in Geva’s Fielding Stage, focusing on Michael Weller’s Buyer Beware. According to Geva, the play revolves around “Ron, a Brandeis College student, who discovers the work of Lenny Bruce. He’s eager to share this boundary-pushing comedic material with his fellow students. But some of them don’t appreciate Bruce’s politically incorrect language, and soon Ron finds himself at the center of a controversy that threatens his friendships, his scholarship and the college’s fundraising efforts. In this age of extremism, what kinds of conversations can we have on college campuses? What role do artists play in provoking conversation and progress?” Becoming part of the conversation can be invigorating for anyone, but “students love it,” touts Greer, especially the “ripped from the headlines” aspect of some of the featured plays. In order to get responses from all sides of an issue, Hornets’ Nest readings can be a catalyst, investigating the most controversial ethical dilemmas of our time. Following each reading, audience members will have the opportunity to engage in an open, collegial discussion with key figures from the Rochester community about the issues raised by the play at hand. Since its inception in 2007, “the Hornets’ Nest series of readings has become nationally recognized and lauded as one of the most innovative theatrical initiatives in the country.” The “Stage Whispers” series is sponsored by The College at Brockport’s Department of Theatre and Music Studies as part of its alliance with Geva Theatre Center. Beyond following basic safety rules, Challenger Baseball tailors certain rules to the skill level of the players. Challenger players use the same equipment, sometimes with modifications, and wear jerseys and hats just like most little leaguers do. Teams are supported by coaches and a buddy system. Buddies help by encouraging players and leading the way around the bases after a hit or by helping a player retrieve a ball that gets past them. The biggest thing a buddy does is be a friend to the player. Players can either hit from a batting tee or off an adult pitcher. Buddies will come from the Spencerport community: SJB players, Valle Sports volunteers, and Spencerport JV and varsity athletes, as it is strongly suggested that children and young adults serve as buddies. Adults can make the biggest difference by attending games and cheering on the players. Where there is solidified interest in this exciting event, a schedule will be published for competitions, along with the locations of contests within the community. Compassionate Brockport creates interfaith community commitment Compassionate Brockport is a newly formed community group initiated by the Brockport Interfaith Ministries group following outreach by Heidi Macpherson, Ph. D., President of The College at Brockport, to promote improved relationships in the community. According to Uniterian Universalist Reverend Lori Staubitz, “a growing number of hate crimes, racial profiling and creating a more welcoming environment
for all here in our town were at the heart of our discussion.” The group’s first endeavor was an Interfaith Prayer Service for “Unity in Diversity,” at a park in downtown Brockport. by T.R. Hendrick The hard water fishermen in our area continue to do well on perch across the region. Fishing reports from the ponds in Greece, Braddock Bay, and Irondequoit Bay are all favorable. Ice fisherman on Sodus Bay report that the perch bite has been on fire there, with good catches coming out of 30 feet of water. The thaws we have recently been experiencing have changed the safety of the ice in spots, so make sure you stay on the beaten paths while walking on the hard water. One fish you won’t hear about being caught in our area, at least in any numbers, is the walleye. Walleye are big brothers to the perch and are the most sought-after fish by ice fishermen across the country. Walleye catches are unusual in our immediate area, with Oneida Lake being the closest place for some decent ice-hole walleye. But did you know we live only a four-hour drive from one of the best walleye ice fishing locations in North America? The Bay of Quinte on the northeast corner of Lake Ontario is a premier walleye fishery, only an hour’s drive east after you cross the Thousand Islands Bridge. The Bay of Quinte is famous for its giant eye’s, and the biggest are being caught through the ice. Just this past month a Canadian ice fisherman caught a humongous 18-pound walleye there. These are fish that have moved into the bay in the fall from Lake Ontario, hanging out there until they spawn at first thaw in the early spring. I have fished this walleye hotspot many times on soft water, and there is no big deal to pull off a trip up there. After crossing the border at the Thousand Islands Bridge, drive east on the Q.E.W. 401 to the town of Napanee and you are on the shores of the famous walleye hot spot. We always fished out of Napanee, but there is excellent fishing in the towns of Belleville and Trenton, a little further east on the bay. There are many places to stay; some will even rent you an ice hut. We’ve stayed at the Twin Peaks Motel because of their large rooms catering to groups of fishermen. You can find current information on accommodations at http://www.quintefishing.com. We’ve fished up there every May for years with great success. At that time of the year we caught smaller resident walleyes, because at that point in the season all the giant fish have migrated back out to Lake Ontario. We would see pictures of the giant walleyes caught through the ice hanging on bait shops walls up there. The recent exchange rates are for every $100 American currency you exchange you will get back $126 Canadian, so that makes the trip a little cheaper. A non-resident fishing license costs $85 Canadian and can be bought at the Canadian Tire store in the Napanee Mall. If you want to save twenty bucks, Ontario Province offers a cheaper Conservation License, but it cuts the number of fish you can keep from four to two. Once you get to Napanee, look for Baker’s Baits at 309 Dundas Street W., Napanee, 613-354-9280. They will give you advice on where to start drilling your holes and sell you the bait you need to catch these big walleyes. So, if you fish for more than one day, which most do if you are going to drive that far, you must release your

This 18.5 pound Godzilla walleye was caught this winter on Bay of Quinte. The Bay of Quinte is one of the best ice fishing destinations in North America, and only a four hour drive from Rochester. Provided photo. fish or eat them that day. We would always bring a deep fryer and cook the fillets back at the motel. Fresh caught walleye, dipped in a beer batter then dropped in hot oil can’t be beat. They make lobster taste like Spam in comparison. Small two- to three-pound walleye are much better tasting than the large walleyes that you tend to catch in the winter. Those are usually big females and mature spawners, and should be released for the good of future fishing. Keep the small fish and take a picture of the large female spawners … then back in the hole with them. When you fish in Canada, do not attempt to bend the rules. Our neighbors to the north are very strict with their fishing and hunting regulations and we have been checked a few times while fishing up there. Once we were even checked by undercover officers disguised as fishermen. They fished next to us for some time before motoring up to our boat and showing their badges. I have no doubt that they picked us out because the I.D. letters on our boat told them we were from New York. They checked our fish in the livewell thoroughly, and we were completely legal. Disappointed, they asked us where we were staying and did we have any fish at the motel. We said that we had cooked the walleye we caught the day before, but that there were a few leftover prepared fillets that we hadn’t eaten eat yet. They informed us that we had our limit in the boat and if there were more at the motel, we were over our possession limit. If we didn’t want a fine we had to stop fishing, go back to the motel and eat them right away, and they would be by later to check. So, we reluctantly stopped fishing and headed back to the motel to finish the leftover fillets. We figured they were bluffing about showing up, but we couldn’t take a chance. Of course they did not show, the Dudley Do-Right looking so and so’s. So, the moral of the story is do not bend the laws in Canada. They are serious. Speaking of serious, if you are a serious ice fisherman you must make the short drive to the Bay of Quinte. The odds are very good that if you put the time in you could catch a walleye of a lifetime.

The Kiwanis Club of Spencerport was updated on the status of Hope Hall at a recent meeting of the group. Providing that update was Sister Diana Dolce, S.S.J., Executive Director of the school. The mission of the school, as per their website, is as a private, nonsectarian, not-for-profit school designed for students with special learning needs who consistently experience frustration in the traditional classroom setting. Hope Hall is committed to the belief that when students are given respect and enough time in a supportive, multi-sensory learning environment, they can become successful learners.Their students come from the greater Rochester area. GPAS finds its beat in music of the 1960s Come get your groove on with your finest tie-dye shirts, bell bottoms and platform shoes at the Greece Performing Arts Society Good Vibrations: Hits of the 1960s Concert. This new themed concert produced by the Greece Performing Arts Society will be held on Saturday, March 24, at 7 p.m. in the recently remodeled Greece Arcadia High School Auditorium at 120 Island Cottage Road (14612). Wear your hippie clothes or come as you are to enjoy the music of the Greece Jazz Band, directed by Gary J. Samulski, Greece Choral Society, directed by Dr. Rollo Fisher, and the Greece Concert Band, directed by BJ Comer. Audience members will recognize many popular hits from artists including The Beach Boys, The Beatles, Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons and The Supremes. To make the Good Vibrations Concert more interesting to all age groups, each of the group directors will introduce many of these songs and musical pieces with a little bit of trivia. It will be a time to reminisce or a time to learn about music that shaped the ’60s. In addition to performances from the Greece Jazz Band, Choral Society and Concert Band, GPAS President Eric Vaughn Johnson is pleased to include guest professional soloists performing some hits of the ’60s: Jenna Owens, Hector Manuel and Dylan DeGeorge. Jenna Owens attended Berklee College of Music for Vocal Performance, was a featured solo performer with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Jeff Tyzik, and performed at the Rochester International Jazz Festival. Hector Manuel, Rochester born but a New Yorker at heart, has been featured in RAPA’s The Wild Party, the regional tour of A Year with Frog and Toad, and world premiere of “Two Tickets to Paradise: The Eddie Money Musical.” He has also been seen flexing his instructing skills at Seton Elementary School as a teaching artist/director for their MTC Kids program. Dylan DeGeorge graduated from Finger Lakes Community College with a concentration in Theatre, won the 2013

Master Gardeners present 22nd Annual Gathering of Gardeners Symposium The Master Gardeners of CCE Monroe County will be hosting its 22nd Annual Gathering of Gardeners on April 28 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The day-long event is at the DoubleTree in Rochester (1111 Jefferson Road) and includes a continental breakfast. General Admission Tickets are $45 if purchased by March 13 and can be found online at www. gatheringofgardeners.com. This year’s first speaker, Joseph Tychonievich, was named one of six “young horticulturists who are helping to shape how America gardens” by “Organic Gardening” magazine. Tychonievich received his bachelor of science from Ohio State University and will be speaking on Rock Gardening: Reimagining a Classic Style and Cool, NonWimpy Plants You Haven’t Heard Of. His popular books will be available for purchase and signing. Next, Carol Southby will discuss Combining Plants for Special Effects. She is a garden designer and natural areas consultant, specializing in landscaping with perennials, native plants and plants for butterflies. She studied
horticulture in England and has a bachelor of science in natural sciences. Her fascination with plant biology and plants in their natural habitat are a major influence on her presentations and garden designs. The symposium also features a unique and unusual plant sale all day in the adjoining parking lot. It is open to the public. Specialty vendors will bring items related to this year’s presentations. In addition to the sale, there will be auction items to delight the garden enthusiast. These items cover a wide range from a large gas grill donated by Home Depot to smaller garden tools, art and crafts. There is something for everyone. The Master Gardeners of Cornell Cooperative Extension are volunteer men and women trained by Cornell Cooperative Extension in the science and art of gardening, as part of a nation-wide education and service program. Master Gardeners are members of the upstate community. They take an interest in gardens, landscape and the environment at large.
Mayor Blackman appointed to NYCOM’S Community Revitalization Policy Committee Mayor Margaret Blackman of the Village of Brockport has been appointed to serve on the Community Revitalization Policy Committee of the New York State Conference of Mayors (NYCOM). Mayor James Miccio of the Village of Fishkill, NYCOM’s President, made the appointment. As a member of the Community Revitalization Policy Committee, Mayor Blackman will be directly involved in providing policy recommendations to the NYCOM Executive Committee, developing positions on various pieces of legislation, and considering new legislative proposals that will benefit cities and villages. This committee will focus on a wide range of issues, including economic development, main street initiatives, abandoned property, land use,
property maintenance and government operations. In making the appointment, Mayor Miccio stated, “Mayor Blackman is a strong and outspoken supporter of local government. We are pleased to have her involved with NYCOM in this important undertaking which will only strengthen our organization’s advocacy efforts. I know Mayor Blackman will be a tremendous asset to this process.” The Conference of Mayors represents city and village governments in New York State and has 576 city and village members. Award winning speaker to give lecture on Camp Abilities The Clarkson Historical Society is pleased to present a lecture given by Lauren J. Lieberman, Ph.D. Lieberman is a distinguished service professor in the Kinesiology Department of The College at Brockport, State University of New York (SUNY). She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in adapted physical education and co-directs The Institute on Movement Studies for Individuals with Visual Impairments (IMSVI). She is also the founder and director of Camp Abilities, an educational sports camp for children with visual impairments at SUNY Brockport. Lieberman’s work reaches far beyond the campus at Brockport. Camp Abilities has been replicated in 19 states and eight countries. She has delivered keynote presentations and was an invited guest speaker all over the US and in China, Israel, Sweden, Ireland, Bermuda, Scotland, Brazil, Turkey, Hungary, Ghana and Canada. In addition, she has published over 125 peer-reviewed articles and published 18 books related to inclusion on physical activity and sports for children with visual impairments and deafblindness, which is a testament to the impact her innovative work has made world-wide. She has won a Points of Light Award for her work with Camp Abilities from the US Government. Camp Abilities has been featured on CNN, HBO Real Sports and NBC. In the RIC meet, Brockport swept the top five spots in the Uneven Bars led by senior Miranda Shaine, who netted the highest score with a 9.725. Allison Hester finished in second (9.650), Alyssa Klock took third (9.375), senior Bridgette Schaal nabbed fourth (8.925) and Amy Eck was fifth (8.800). The Golden Eagles posted their highest team score of the meet on the floor with 48.400 as senior Brittany Vasile earned a meet high 9.850. Brockport took the top five spots on the floor with Kimberly Musall (9.725) finishing in second, Schaal (9.700) taking third, Shaine (9.650) fourth and Madison O’Malley (9.475) fifth. “I was really nervous, but I believed in myself and I know that my body knows what to do, so I clear my head,” Vasile said about her final home performance. “It’s really hard especially being anchor on the
floor, senior meet and being a senior and everyone around you sad that they already finished, so it was hard.” Juniors Stephanie Mager and Candi Kowalik finished one-two on the Vault with 9.750 and 9.675 respectively. Allison Hester and Shelby Schumacher tied for second on the Balance Beam with 9.500 scores. Senior Erica Roth was sixth. The Golden Eagles have two more weekends of competition prior to the NCGA Regionals March 10 at Rhode Island College with the top-four teams in the nation advancing to the National Championships in Springfield, Massachusetts March 2324. Brockport finished third in the nation last season. “We rested some people that needed resting, but we got the chance to get some kids in there that we don’t normally see and they did really, really well which was a good thing to see because we have a big graduation (class) so the young kids need to start stepping up,” Brockport head coach John Feeney said after the RIC meet. “There is a method to my madness and that’s to get us peaking at the right time.”
Trojans end Rangers’ season by Warren Kozireski Spencerport roared out of the locker room with 21 first quarter points in their Section V Class A1 girls’ basketball playoff opener, but managed just 21 points the rest of the game in a 68-42 loss at Greece Athena. Junior Joie Culkin hit the first four baskets and classmate Megan Zaharkin added a put-back to stake the Rangers to an early 11-0 lead before Athena scored the next ten points. The Rangers closed the quarter with another offensive spurt as Culkin hit a foul line jumper, sophomore Shea Schleicher a three-pointer, Zaharkin a lay-up and freshman Lily DePalma beat the first quarter buzzer with a trey to help Spencerport open up a 21-12 lead. Athena then converted to a press defense that resulted in multiple turnovers and some easy baskets as they outscored the
Rangers 23-10 in the second to lead by seven points at the half. The Trojans scored 14 more in the third quarter while limiting the Rangers to a field goal from DePalma, a put-back and free throws by sophomore Kaylee Wikander and Culkin. Zaharkin accounted for four points in the final quarter with a pair of field goals while senior Nanako Kakishima added a free throw for the only Rangers offense. Culkin led all Rangers scorers with ten points and added five rebounds while DePalma added eight points. Schleicher scored six with three assists and Wikander added three points. Zaharkin had three rebounds and sophomore Elizabeth Maloney had a pair of steals to go with three rebounds. In addition to Kakishima, senior captain Danielle Mahoney competed her high school basketball career.
Brockport and Churchville-Chili both advanced to the Section V Class B semifinals with quarterfinal wins over Geneseo and Aquinas respectively before losing tight affairs in the semi-finals played at RIT’s Gene Polisseni Center. Brockport dropped a 5-3 decision to Canandaigua while Churchville-Chili fell to Webster-Thomas 3-2. In the first semi-final, Brockport jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 4:12 of the first period as Andrew Harley picked up the puck at center ice and dashed down the right wing before his snapper from 15 feet out found the back of the net. Two minutes later Blue Devils goaltender Liam Schreiner made three-point blank saves before Canandaigua was able to tie the game at 1-1 with a power play goal by Alex Burley at 10:01. Burley scored twice more over the first 4:17 of the second to complete his natural hat trick to extend the Braves lead to 3-1. But Harley scored his second of the game with only three seconds remaining on a power play with an unassisted wraparound goal at 9:35. The Braves netted what would prove to be the game winner at 4:49 of the third as an Evan best backhand to the short side snuck under the goalie’s blocker pad to make it 4-2. But the Blue Devils again closed to within one of the lead as freshman Austin Ennis centered a feed to Peyton Young, who scored on a wrist shot at 7:17. Mendon spoils Brockport Senior Night by Warren Kozireski Brockport and Pittsford-Mendon combined for 54 points in a wild fourth quarter, but unfortunately the Vikings netted 31 of those as they defeated the Blue Devils 7358 in boy’s basketball. Senior Amire Odey kept Brockport alive in the first quarter with six points as the Vikings led 14-12. Neither team made more than two consecutive baskets in a second quarter that featured nine lead changes, but Odey added eight more points while senior Jacob Jurhs knocked down a three-pointer and senior Cory Gross a lay-up to make it a one-point Mendon lead at the half. The Vikings opened up the second half on a 13-6 run before a late turnaround
basket by Brockport senior Noah Schultz and a drive by Gross made it 42-35 after three quarters. Mendon then blew open the game with their 31-point fourth quarter outburst which included a 15-5 run midway through. Odey led the Blue Devils with 23 points while Jurhs scored 14 and Gross added 12 for Brockport. The game marked the final regular season home game for seniors Odey, Jurhs, Gross. Schultz, Dan Yaeger and Michael Kruger. The Blue Devils entered the Section V playoffs seeded eighth in Class A1 and hosted ninth seed Brighton in the first round. The winner plays top-seed Greece Athena.
Bright Raven gymnasts compete across NY On the weekend of February 10 and 11, gymnasts from the Bright Raven Boys Teams traveled to Plainview, New York to compete in the Beast of the East Invitational. The Level 9 Boys Team placed first overall with Justin Ciccone of Greece winning the all-around, pommel horse, still rings, vault and high bar. Cole Pringle of Pittsford was third all-around and won the floor exercise, while Ethan Rio of Avon won the parallel bars. In the Level 6 competition, Milo Anderson of Penfield placed second all-around to lead the Level 6 Boys Team to a third place finish.
The Level 4 and 5 Bright Raven Boys Teams competed at the Victory Classic in Greece, where the Level 4 Team placed second overall. Aidan Kelley of Holley won the floor exercise and parallel bars and finished third all-around. The Level 5 Team also placed second overall, led by Kash Ames of Webster and Luke Sykora of Chili, finishing second and third all-around, respectively.
